FOOL Rep. Matt Gaetz’s terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad week

t was a bad day week month for Matt Gaetz. Last Tuesday’s New York Times report detailing allegations of sex trafficking dropped a cherry bomb in Gaetz’s toilet, kicking off the kind of news cycle every politician dreads. We’re sure there’s more to come, but so far every day, seemingly every hour, has brought new twists and turns to this squicky yet totally unsurprising saga. Before his ascension amongst the Trumperati, which has given him the opportunity to truly revel in his fuckwittery on a national stage (swanning around in a gas mask on the House floor in March 2020 to “own” those calling for COVID protocols; inviting an accused white nationalist and Holocaust denier to the State of the Union; breaking into a secure room of the Capitol building to disrupt impeachment hearings — while livestreaming on his phone; telling MSNBC that “everywhere you look in Haiti, it’s sheet metal and garbage”), Gaetz was best known in Florida for the several DUIs he’d gotten out of thanks to his rich daddy, Rep. Don Gaetz. (And the points-for-boinks game he set up among the Tallahassee frat bro caucus; more on that below.) Here are a few of the stories from Gaetz’s septem horribilis. Many happy returns, milkshake hunter.

Tuesday, March 30:

Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz reportedly under investigation for relationship with 17-year-old girl Congressman Matt Gaetz, a Florida Republican who was literally the only person to vote against a 2017 bipartisan anti-sex trafficking bill, is now reportedly being investigated for having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl and violating laws against sex trafficking in the process. According to a report from the New York Times, the investigation was launched during President Donald Trump’s term, under former attorney general William Barr, and focuses on an alleged 2019 relationship between Gaetz and a 17-year-old girl. The investigation also looks at whether or not the Florida congressman paid for her to cross state lines, which would breach federal sex trafficking laws. The investigation is part of a larger inquiry into former Seminole County tax collector and Gaetz pal Joel Greenberg, who was charged last year with 14 felony counts accusing him of stalking a political opponent, using a state database to create fake IDs, and sex traf-

ficking a minor between the ages of 14 and 17, reports the Times. Gaetz told the publication that the Justice Department informed his lawyers that he was the subject and not the target of the Greenberg investigation. “I only know that it has to do with women,” said Gaetz to the Times. “I have a suspicion that someone is trying to recategorize my generosity to ex-girlfriends as something more untoward.” This isn’t the first time Gaetz has been accused of sexual misconduct. Last year, Florida state Rep. Chris Latvala accused the congressman of designing a “game” with a point system for “sleeping with aides, interns, lobbyists, and married legislators.” The game, which was first reported by the Miami Herald, awarded one point for a having sex with a lobbyist, two for a staffer, three for another legislator and six for a married legislator. At the time, Gaetz denied to the Tampa Bay Times that he created, had knowledge of, or participated in the game. orlandoweekly.com

Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz floats DOJ extortion plot in bizarre ‘Tucker Carlson Tonight’ interview about sex trafficking investigation A drowning person will frequently appear calm, at least compared to the thrashing, screaming depictions we see on television. One giveaway that lifeguards are trained to look for is the act of climbing an invisible ladder. Panicked swimmers will push down at nothing, trying to create space between themselves and the water. This can continue into rescue efforts, with the swimmer trying to climb anyone who tries to help them, pushing them under to get a second more air. All this is to say, Matt Gaetz definitely looked like he was drowning in a bizarre interview on Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tonight on Tuesday. Underneath the layers of polish that make him look like an animatronic Texas preacher at the world’s saddest Chuck E. Cheese, Gaetz was sweating as he ranted about extortion plots and possible links between the Biden administration and a reported investigation for sex trafficking-related crimes. Carlson invited Gaetz on to his show. The environment could not be friendlier, with Carlson admitting that he had no questions for Gaetz and was giving him free rein to state his case. Gaetz thrashed around at the Department of Justice and the host of the show, pushing down on anything he could get his hands on. He named former DOJ employee David McGee, saying that he asked Gaetz for money in exchange for sweeping these charges under the rug. “I know that there was a demand for money in exchange for a commitment that he could make this investigation go away, along with his co-conspirators,” Gaetz said. “They even claimed to have specific connections inside the Biden White House. I don’t know if that’s true, they were promising that Joe Biden would pardon me. Obviously, I don’t need a pardon.” It can be hard to tell how Carlson feels about what’s being said by any guest. Much has been made of his resting face of deep, slack-jawed confusion. But after the close of the interview, Carlson called the segment “one of the weirdest interviews I’ve ever conducted.” Following the interview, Gaetz doubled down on his extortion story on Twitter.

Thursday, April 1:

House leaders Nancy Pelosi, Kevin McCarthy agree that Rep. Matt Gaetz should be stripped of committee positions if sex trafficking allegations are true. Matt Gaetz now knows what it’s like to be stuck in a room with him. Like any unlucky souls who have ever had to listen to the self-described Florida “firebrand,” Gaetz finds his situation getting bleaker by the second. The latest blow to the Florida conservative and professional troll came via House of Representatives leadership. Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that the Ethics Committee should look into allegations that Gaetz had an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old girl. During a press conference on April 1, the House’s top Democrat said that Gaetz should be stripped of his committee positions if there’s any truth to the allegations. “If, in fact, these allegations are true, of course being removed from the Judiciary Committee is the least that could be done,” Pelosi said during a press conference, per The Hill. “But again, I think from what we’ve heard so far,

this would be a matter for the Ethics Committee.” (Could there be just a tinge of sweet, sweet revenge for Gaetz filing an ethics complaint against Pelosi after she ripped a copy of Trump’s State of the Union speech in half? You come at the queen, you best not miss.) The generally disliked politician will find no help from his own party. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy told Fox News that they won’t stand in the way of his removal if allegations proved to be true. Beyond the matter of losing his leverage in Congress, Gaetz could also face charges for misuse of campaign funds. The same investigation that is looking into whether or not Gaetz induced a minor to cross state lines for the purposes of sex, which meets the federal standard for sex trafficking, is also checking whether or not Gaetz misused campaign funds in the process. CNN’s Evan Perez reports that investigators are digging into the source of funds that might have been used to pay for travel and expenses illegally.

Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz allegedly showed nude photos of women he claimed to have slept with to lawmakers It’s become a bit of a point of pride among locals that even our petit boug are just well-heeled iterations of Florida Man. Our local politicos are downright weirder than most places, to reflect the character of the place they’re supposed to represent. Still, there are unwritten rules around the tone of famous Florida Man stories and, similarly, that pride only holds as long as people aren’t being hurt. It’s hard to laugh along with an out-and-out creep. And all possibility of criminality aside, Florida House representative Matt Gaetz does appear to be a real skeeve. The latest reports claim that Gaetz showed nude photos of women he claimed to have slept with to his fellow legislators. Two unnamed sources told CNN they were shown the photos and videos directly. All the anonymous tipsters shared that Gaetz was a known braggart when it came to his relationships. One of the sources got specific and shared that one video was of a naked woman hula hooping. Those allegations have nothing to do with the ongoing Department of Justice investigation into the congressman. The story laid out by Times sources shows [Joel] Greenberg connecting Gaetz with women he met on various sugar daddy platforms, where women are linked with well-off men who trade gifts, money and other expenses in exchange for dates. The sources allege that Gaetz had sex with several women he met via Greenberg and paid them over cash transfer apps. Several of the women who spoke to the Times allege Gaetz took ecstasy during their encounters, which is not the first time Gaetz has been accused of illicit drug use by those in the know. A recent Daily Beast article paints a similar picture. Gaetz, for his part, denied the allegations through his office. “Matt Gaetz has never paid for sex,” the statement shared with the Times said. “Matt Gaetz refutes all the disgusting allegations completely. Matt Gaetz has never ever been on any such websites whatsoever. Matt Gaetz cherishes the relationships in his past and looks forward to marrying the love of his life.” He claims the initial leak of the DOJ investigation into whether or not he had an inappropriate relationship with a minor was part of an extortion plot to bilk his family for money. In an interview with Tucker Carlson and subsequent tweets, Gaetz asked the DOJ to release tapes that would prove his family was the target of an extortion scheme.

Spring awakening Florida Film Festival is one of the first major Orlando events to return post-pandemic BY CAMERON MEIER

ust eight months after the Florida Film Festival became the first major movie fest to be held in the Southeast United States during the COVID-19 pandemic, the event is returning to its traditional April timeslot. The festival will again be held at just one location, Maitland’s Enzian Theater, because its pre-COVID partner, Regal Winter Park Village, didn’t announce its reopening in time to coordinate with Enzian. This means that, like last year’s event, movies will be shown on just one screen. So to accommodate the 164 films, the 30th annual fest will again last 14 days (April 9-22), instead of its pre-COVID format of 10. The festival will again be a hybrid event, with all films screening in-person and all but three also available online for Florida residents. And to guard against coronavirus, Enzian will institute the same safety protocols it has been using for the last year: mask requirements (when not eating and drinking), spaced-out seating, reduced capacity and temperature checks. Social gatherings will be scaled back, as they were last year, but Enzian still plans three parties and two Sunday brunches, in addition to live music at Eden Bar. And perhaps most importantly, attendees will be able to meet filmmakers, about 60 of whom are expected to attend. Though no in-person celebrity events are planned, Karen Allen will participate in a Zoom Q&A session following a screening of John Carpenter’s Starman, and Isabella Rossellini will do the same following a showing of David Lynch’s Blue Velvet. The lineup comprises 36 features and 128 shorts representing 31 countries, with 151 films having premiere status (world, United States, Southeast or Florida). Those were curated from roughly 2,200 submissions from 95 nations. Though the international scope is undeniable, the opening-night offering, Because of Charley, was produced, filmed and set in Central Florida. In fact, it’s

the first COVID-compliant film shot in the Sunshine State. Directed by local filmmaker Jon Binkowski and starring a cast of locally well-known actors, the movie tells the tale of two stepfamilies holed up together during Hurricane Charley in 2004 and features veteran actor John Amos (Good Times, Roots, Coming to America), who plans to attend the screening. (The film is not available online.) “There is always a very concentrated effort to make sure that the best films being produced in Florida are showcased at the Florida Film Festival, but we don’t program to a quota for Florida, just like we’re not programming to meet quotas for any other category,” says Matthew Curtis, programming director. “We have over 30 films this year with Florida connections. This is the third straight year that the Florida Film Festival has opened with a filmmaker based in Central Florida or [a film] shot in the state. We are also extremely proud of the content in the Sunshine & Swampland program, as we think it represents the strongest and most unique program in that block’s history. Florida films or films made by Florida filmmakers are featured in all manner of categories from narrative features, doc shorts, narrative shorts, animated shorts, experimental shorts (Sunspots), food films and midnight shorts,” Curtis continues. “We are also proud to see alumni and former staff members from Florida State University, Daytona State, Ringling, the University of Central Florida and Full Sail represented in this festival.” Ticket options include a single film or shorts block ($12), a five-pack ($55), a 10-pack ($105) and a 20-pack ($200). The Catch An old Hollywood tradition called “day for night” allows filmmakers to shoot night scenes in daytime by either underexposing them or darkening them in post-production. Conversely, The Catch appears to be that rarest of movies that shoots night for day. Snarky insults aside, the plain truth is I simply couldn’t see a lot of this film. Using natural light is noble, but not if you can’t see what’s in the frame. Compounding that problem, first-time writer-director Matthew Ya-Hsiung Balzer’s drama is narratively challenged, with needlessly confusing character backstories and motivations. And despite the talent of Katia Winter (Sleepy Hollow TV series), her and her fellow actors’ performances are often reduced to a contrived and unending chain of curse words, emotional brutality and unpleasantness. Inspired by real events, the story’s sincerity isn’t in question. Indeed, there’s 24

some good content to be uncovered in this tough-minded study of a dysfunctional family in a hardscrabble lobster-fishing village in Maine, but it’s hidden in darkness — literally and figuratively.

From first-time writer-director Sabrina Doyle comes this occasionally impactful look at an ex-con, his former girlfriend and the non-traditional family they cobble together on little more than a chicken wing and a prayer. Produced by the team that brought us The Florida Project, Lorelei is similarly gritty and socially relevant. However, it lacks the previous film’s vibrancy and originality, and much of the dialogue feels forced, even cheap. Buoyed by a charismatic lead performance from Jena Malone (The Neon Demon) and solid support by its juvenile actors, Lorelei, like Project, makes an interesting pivot from pluck to whimsy in its final act. But by the time that finale arrives, the film has worn out most of its overly long 111-minute runtime. Most significantly, in Pablo Schreiber (First Man), as the ex-con, it lacks a strong male lead on the scale of Willem Dafoe.

Mandibles If you’re one of the few people who thinks Dumb and Dumber would benefit from a giant insect, Mandibles is your film. But even if that thought never crossed your mind, this French-Belgian absurdist comedy from writer-director Quentin Dupieux might still be your slice of brie. After dimwitted friends Manu (Grégoire

Lydia Lunch: The War Is Never Over You could make a documentary on author/performer/artist/hellraiser Lydia Lunch’s exploits in Orlando alone: a fiery appearance at Rollins College in the late 1990s, cold-cocking a fratboy who was talking over her set in the early ’10s, down to her most recent foray, riveting and scandalizing a packed Maxine’s in 2019. Until that day comes, the hagiography that is The War Is Never Over will more than suffice. Tracing the career of this American icon through the decades, from no-wave beginnings with Teenage Jesus in the 1970s through books, solo albums, films and now leading a savage ensemble

Ludig) and Jean-Gab (David Marsais) discover the world’s largest housefly in the trunk of their stolen car, they name it Dominique, feed it cat food and train it to be their personal drone. Take that, Amazon! As with Dupieux’s other films, such as 2010’s Rubber — featuring a murderous car tire — Mandibles hits rough patches. But its playfulness and surreal humor is tough to resist. It’s admittedly an acquired taste and, therefore, a tough film to fully endorse. But I suggest you try it and see for yourself what all the buzz is about. Mandibles is preceded by the even better and equally absurd French-language Squish, a short, pitch-black farce about the accidental smooshing of a child. Magnifique!

Mogul Mowgli Riz Ahmed has cornered the market on portraying musicians with unusual health problems. Hard on the heels of his welldeserved Oscar nomination for Sound of Metal, Ahmed is again exploring the genre. But this time he substitutes rap for heavy metal, England for America and an autoimmune disease for deafness. If that summation is cursory, my apologies, as Ahmed and director Bassam Tariq (who co-wrote the script with Ahmed) deserve better. So how’s this for praise?: Ahmed gives the best performance I’ve seen at this year’s festival. His acting (and rapping) seem particularly suited to the script, which alternates between socially provocative (even incendiary) and personally heartbreaking. Those pivots lead to unevenness, but Tariq’s confronta-

tional filmmaking style retains its power throughout. Though the third act is somewhat underdeveloped, Tariq’s embrace of surrealism and contemplation of cultural identity — plus a wonderfulsupportingturnbyAlyyKhanasthe father — make Mogul Mowgli a festival must-see.

But Emilie Bierre, as Mag, gives arguably the best juvenile performance of the festival. And the script, which Leblanc co-wrote with Judith Baribeau, who also lends her acting chops to the production, is both suspenseful and agonizing. You might not always like where the story is going, but you will be compelled to follow.

No Ordinary Man

Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street

When paramedics were called to the home of jazz pianist Billy Tipton in 1989, attempting to resuscitate the dying musician, they discovered that he was a trans man — a secret unknown to anyone, including his wife and children. This revelation set off a wave of lurid news reports and television segments, culminating in a sensationalist book by Diane Middlebrook. The touching documentary No Ordinary Man reframes Tipton from a posthumous tabloid headline to a forefather and hero to the trans community. There’s precious little archival documentation of Tipton to draw from — a handful of photos and two very good albums — but this film still ends up feeling like a fully realized portrait of a complicated man. Why did this driven musician give it all up as he was on the cusp of stardom to live a quiet life as a family man? Tipton’s story, and by extension, the story of people living trans, is told through interviews and mock (but not mocking) auditions for a Billy Tipton film with a number of trans folks across generation and color lines and Tipton’s eldest son — who was taking care of his father at the end of his life — intercut with Tipton’s music, home recordings of a long-ago family Christmas and talk show segments aired in the wake of Tipton’s passing. What emerges is a tale of reclamation and redemption for a gifted musician and father and man.

Les Nôtres (Our Own) In small-town Quebec, Magalie is a seemingly normal 13-year-old, until she faints during dance class. At the hospital, doctors reveal the cause of her collapse, and their revelation reverberates throughout the close-knit community. Director Jeanne Leblanc’s dark, uncomfortable drama gets points for intrigue and provocation, but it too often coasts upon its intriguing premise. Indeed, the ending of Les Nôtres seems trapped between ambiguity and total absence.

The sociocultural context of Sesame Street is rarely understood in full, even by those of us who were around the day it went on the air. Once upon a time, the federal government threw an ass-ton of money at public television, to do with as it pleased; a bunch of concerned and forward-thinking adults used that money to create a series they hoped would bridge the literacy gap among preschoolers, particularly Black ones. (Yes, things like this actually used to happen!) The riveting doc Street Gang shows how this revolutionary undertaking was embraced by its audience but criticized by others as too loud, too frantic and too … well, “integrated.” The doc is a for-serious goldmine of interviews, archival footage and show outtakes, all flying by at a pace that never lets up. It’s consistently fascinating and often hilarious — and then it takes a turn into the truly affecting as it recounts the personal toll Sesame Street wreaked on the committed creative team that sacrificed so much to make it, many of whom are no longer with us. As a eulogy for those fine folks, the movie carries a message that’s as easy to understand as your ABCs: They were here, they’re gone now, and they gave a damn.

The Stylist Here’s something to make you nostalgic for all those months when you had to be your own barber: an artsy thriller about a hairdresser (Najarra Townsend) with the curious habit of killing and scalping anyone whose lifestyle she resents and/or covets. (And she sets that bar pretty low, given that one of her victims is a barista.) As the story and her spree progress, Townsend’s Claire gradually focuses her obsessive tendencies on a customer who’s preparing to get married — whereupon the film becomes a sort of Bridesmaids with a body count. The Stylist is a feature-length version of director Gevargizian’s 2016 short of the same name. But while it’s better acted

and more technically sophisticated, there just isn’t enough going on narratively or philosophically to justify the expansion. The picture feels padded, moving slowly enough between developments for the implausibilities of the storytelling to matter far more than they should. Some very nice cinematography is what you’ll enjoy most while the movie meanders toward its ultimate point that … well, who knows, really? Despite some passing references to the glass ceiling that figures into both this feature and its source short, ascertaining a coherent feminist message will be a daunting prospect even to folks who found Monster a rallying cry. Like your hair during lockdown, The Stylist was better before it got all long and hard to manage.

Tiny Tim: King for a Day Herbert “Tiny Tim” Khaury might have tiptoed through the tulips, but he unapologetically galloped through life, forging a path unlike almost any other entertainer in the history of showbiz. And by doing so, he inspired a generation of underground artists, sexually androgynous performers and loveable oddballs — including Weird Al Yankovic, who partially narrates director Johan von Sydow’s documentary. Combining extraordinarily personal interviews, old clips and darkly expressive animation, Tiny Tim: King for a Day is an irresistible portrait of a man we may never fully understand. Alternatingly offbeat, funny and tragic — but ultimately inspiring — the doc is never quite as strange as Tim himself. But that’s OK. No one was. And that’s Tim’s legacy, a legacy this film joyously cements.

The Truffle Hunters Like the mysterious food that inspired it, The Truffle Hunters is inscrutable. You can’t quite grasp the documentary’s journalistic backstory, even after attempting to read between its minimalistic lines. Perhaps directors Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw should have lengthened their movie to provide more historical and culinary context. Or perhaps, at 84 minutes of observational mesmerism, their film is perfect. The truth lies closer to the latter, as the film’s humor and beauty overwhelm its vagueness. You will be particularly overjoyed to spend time with Birba, Nina, Fiona, Charlie, Yara, Vasco and Leo — the truffle hounds — and their elderly mas-

ters, as they hunt the forests of northern Italy for everyone’s favorite subterranean fungus. The movie, which is not available online, will be followed by a Zoom Q&A with the filmmakers, including Dweck, who attended the 2018 Florida Film Festival. At that festival, his documentary, The Last Race, won the Special Jury Award for Artistic Vision.

My Wonderful Wanda Impeccably crafted in a formal three-act structure — complete with epilogue — My Wonderful Wanda (literally, Wanda, My Wonder in its native German) is my pick for best flick of this year’s fest. The story of a Polish caretaker and her unconventional relationship with a wealthy Swiss family has more than its share of unsettling and heart-rending moments, but writer-director Bettina Oberli balances that drama with levity by occasionally emphasizing the story’s absurdity. And by doing so, she trades the darkness of many of this year’s festival dramas for an irresistible blend of satire, social commentary and perfectly placed pathos. Agnieszka Grochowska deserves praise for her eponymous role, but the film is chiefly an ensemble triumph, with André Jung as family patriarch, Marthe Keller as matriarch and Birgit Minichmayr as the eldest daughter, all dancing together in a Cassavetes-style choreography that would make Bob Fosse swoon. Here’s a film that lives up to its title.

Workhorse Queen The runaway success of RuPaul’s Drag Race, once considered a niche-interest show at best, proves that it’s Ru’s world; we all just live in it. Workhorse Queen is the poignant tale of what happens in the drag queen salt mines, if you will — how RPDR has affected regional drag preforming circuits and those hard-working queens themselves. Increased visibility can be a good thing, but spotlights can fry as much as amplify, and the first half of Workhorse seems almost like a cautionary tale on the pitfalls of drag’s commodification. When it takes a turn into the more personal story of Ed Popil, aka Mrs. Kasha Davis, the doc finds its heart. In the end, Mrs. Kasha Davis seems like someone you’d want to know. As an experienced arts critic, I

don’t ordinarily get especially excited about attending opening nights, much less become emotional over the curtain speech before a preview performance. You’ll have to forgive my lack of journalistic objectivity this week, but I freely admit to getting a bit verklempt when Orlando Shakespeare Theater managing director Douglas LoveRamos took the Walt Disney Amphitheater stage last Thursday night to introduce the troupe’s triumphant reawakening of their original Lake Eola home. Because after an interminable year of shuttered venues, site-specific strolls and stuttering streaming experiments, Central Florida’s most important professional theater company has returned to large-scale in-person performances. And even if their outdoor mounting of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which runs through April 17, misses some of Shakespeare’s subtleties, there’s genuine magic in this fairy tale. Arriving downtown ahead of Midsummer’s press preview, I swiftly remembered why Orlando Shakes abandoned their annual festivals on the lakeside stage 15 years ago. It’s challenging at best to find metered street parking along Rosalind Avenue or Central Boulevard, and the nearest public parking garages are an inconvenient hike away. The amphitheater’s wobbly metal benches seem to have intentionally been designed to be as butt-numbing as possible (bring your own cushion). And the ambient audioscape includes screaming emergency sirens, cranked-up car stereos, and the thumping beats from a neighboring bar. (They were nice enough to mute their jams for the majority of the show, but not the crucial closing soliloquies.) While I probably would have carped about such barely controlled chaos during

the B.C.E. (Before COVID Era), today I bow in acknowledgment of the extraordinary efforts the Shakes cast and crew expended to ensure the show could safely go on. As one of the region’s first major Actors’ Equity-approved productions since the pandemic started, Love-Ramos detailed their Advent Health-supported precautions, which include all staff being tested for COVID weekly (actors are tested three times a week) and mandatory masking for all audience members. Under Jim Helsinger’s direction, unmasked actors are always blocked to stay six feet apart, and the Bard’s five-act text has been trimmed down to 100 intermission-less minutes. Those caffeinated Cliffs Notes cuts create a Midsummer that emphasizes broad comedy and Seussian rhymes at the expense of the central romantic quadrangle. That would be a major issue if the stage weren’t stocked with A-list talent, starting at the top with Timothy Williams (using his best booming anime villain voice) as fairy king Oberon and Melanie Whipple as a witchy queen Titania worthy of a WandaVision spinoff. Trenell Mooring’s Hermia is the epitome of “little [but] fierce,” even if her rivalry with frenemy Helena (Janice Munk) generates far more heat than either enjoys with their sexless suitors Lysander (Christopher Creane) and Demetrius (Wildlin Pierrevil). And Greg Pragel’s Puck milks much satyric mileage out of his running gags. The biggest beneficiaries are the rude mechanicals, led by Anne Hering as Peter Quince (demonstrating due a technical snafu during previews that Orlando’s answer to Dame Judi Dench doesn’t need no damn microphone), and the legendary Philip Nolen’s brilliantly braying embodiment of Nick Bottom. With the primary plotlines all trimmed to their barest essen-

tials, this troupe of terrible thespians are inadvertently anointed stars of the show, and their “tedious brief” play-within-aplay becomes the evening’s dramatic denouement instead of a palate-cleansing dessert. Admittedly, the air-hugs, air-slaps and similar jokey references to pandemic restrictions, which amuse at first, detract from immersion in the Athenian fantasy after the fourth or fifth repetition. Fortunately, this killer cast compensates for the lack of emotional depth with an energetic enthusiasm that 16th-century groundlings would surely have appreciated. I’ve seen many a Midsummer since working on a summer stock production nearly 30 years ago, and although Orlando Shakes’ al fresco offering might not be the most textured take I’ve seen, after a year of lockdown I’m grading all theater on a curve. And there are some elements of this production that (as Duke Theseus says) “needs no excuse.” Daylight obliterates designer Philip Lupo’s lighting until almost halfway through the show, but when Bert Scott’s iconic Ionic setpieces and Denise Warner’s toga-tastic costumes are bathed in twinkling fairy light, blending with Britt Sandusky’s Mendelssohn-accented soundtrack, the effect is as enchanting as anything you’ll find at the amphitheater’s namesake’s attractions. With tickets starting at just $22, there’s no excuse not to support Shakes’ return to the live entertainment we’ve all missed so much. And when the company lights up Lake Eola again next month with Little Shop of Horrors, I’m hoping I can evaluate it with no excuses, and that the weak and idle theme that was 2020 will seem no more yielding but a dream. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

(Yeah, I get it.) And Paul Rudd. (Took me awhile, but I came around.) And Keanu Reeves. (Seriously? Did no one see Bram Stoker’s Dracula?) In the No. 1 slot is Dolly Parton, whose contributions to music and philanthropy were the focus of a 2019 event that included performances by the likes of Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and the big Jolene-hater herself. Now you can take a gander at that spectacle from the comfort of your own sofa, smiling at the down-home righteousness of it all while thinking, “She got us the vaccine!” Just don’t pay any attention to those scurrilous rumors that she once turned the Civil War into a dinner show or something. (Netflix) Snabba Cash — The criminal underside of the jet set is exposed in a six-episode crimedrama series that expands upon the popular Swedish film franchise. The title really means “easy money,” but apparently everything in that country needs to rhyme with “Abba.” (Netflix) This Is a Robbery: The World’s Biggest Art Heist — Four documentary episodes explore the 1990 looting of Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum by criminals who remain

uncaught to this day. I’d love to think it was that Banksy, but he would have left us something cool. Like “The Blue Boy” with a Transformer’s head on it or some shit. (Netflix) The Wedding Coach — Every episode, comedian Jamie Lee teams up with another friend from the biz to help a nervous couple make it down the aisle. Because if there’s one person you’re going to go to for level-headed relationship advice, it’s a comic. (Netflix)

PREMIERES THURSDAY: The Power — The electrical shortages that plagued the U.K. in the early 1970s are the fulcrum for a feature-length shocker about a young nurse forced to work overnight in a scary hospital. (Amazon Prime) Thunder Force — Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer play former BFFs who rekindle their relationship when they’re gifted with superpowers. Yet another dubious project crafted for McCarthy by her hubby, Ben Falcone. Now there’s a pair who should have considered hiring the Wedding Coach. (Netflix)

PREMIERES TUESDAY: My Love: Six Stories of True Love — And finally, to prove that not all anthologies are horror shows — at least not according to the strictest definition of the term — here’s a docuseries that focuses on committed couples from around the globe. To make the cut, the spotlighted pairs can have been together as long as 60 years or as few as 43. Forty-three? I don’t know why we’re even bothering with such amateurs. LOCAL RELEASES The first and freshest local debut to talk about this week comes from the creative Grand Collab cooperative, and it’s a diamond. Twenty-one-year-old Jazzy Soto has just landed on the scene with 21, a five-song EP that’s a shining showcase of not just the exciting newcomer but the GC crew at large. Across jazz, R&B and even rap, Soto’s voice is a bright, sultry and confident force. Thanks to the production work of TranQilo (the new production guise of DJ Cub), Tek the Intern and SoyIsReal, the EP exudes classic quality that’s cut in modern, art-forward angles. The star of the bunch is superb lead track “Take Control,” but there’s no filler in here. The EP is up on major platforms now. The other impressive local debut is Danielfuzztone, a project that’s actually been in the oven since 2016. Although it’s the solo vehicle of Orlando artist Daniel Fuller, he’s had some notable sounding boards throughout the evolution and one of them has been Q-Burns Abstract Message, aka Michael Donaldson. Well, it seems that long and thoughtful gestation has really paid off. The recently unveiled Thoughts and Abandonment is Danielfuzztone’s first album release, and it’s a transporting 19-track odyssey. They first cut their teeth in jazz fusion band Rhythm Method in the 1980s, opening for acts like Miles Davis, James Brown, Zawinil Syndicate and backing up Ira Sullivan and Joe Diorio. They’re planning a new Cortez/ Williams Project album for the fall, and these full-band engagements will premiere that material. What was a loss, though, has now been recouped as an even bigger jackpot, with the New Standard bringing Wennerstrom in for a headlining appearance. Although a little more personal in style than the Bastards’ big dusty swagger, Wennerstrom’s solo material is outstanding nonetheless and taps the same rootsy soul with stirring integrity. This windfall is an excellent and unexpected opportunity to see a powerhouse performer and one of rock’s most unmistakable voices. I’m a 29-year-old straight man. I’ve been with my 25-year-old partner for six years. I love her and think that we are perfect for each other. We have all the things that make existing with someone wonderful. But about two years into our relationship I had a twoweek-long affair while I was out of the country. I fucked up. I came clean to my partner and we’ve done our best to work through this over the last four years, but it has obviously caused some trust issues between us. I’ve never cheated it again and I try every day to work through these issues I caused in our relationship. There’s also been two recent instances of me breaking her trust. On a particularly stressful day I was caught sneaking a cigarette — the sneaking part is the issue — and on another occasion I did drugs in our communal back garden with a friend after she had gone to bed. I owned up to both straight away. I view both of these as being a symptom of the lockdown/pandemic prompting me to break with my “normal” behavior. But my partner is no longer comfortable allowing me to have the freedom to go out with my friends and partake in drugs without her express permission, which she already said she’s unlikely to grant me. The other element to this is, we want kids in three years. We’ve agreed that I will fully abstain from all drugs after we become parents. I want to meet the wants of my partner while also maintaining a degree of autonomy. When we discuss these matters — which we’ve been doing frequently lately — her argument boils down to this: “You did a bad thing, you need to make concessions so that I feel safe, you having to seek my permission makes me feel safe.” It’s coming to loggerheads and I don’t know if I’m the unreasonable one here, especially since I’m arguing for the freedom to do an illegal drug. I would appreciate your external, outside, drug-positive perspective in this. Don’t Really Understand Girlfriend’s Sentiment I had some emergency dental work done this morning and I’m a little strung out on … what are those things called again? Oh, right: drugs. Last night I selected the letters I wanted to respond to in this week’s column and I really didn’t expect to be on powerful painkillers when I sat down to write my responses today. In all honesty, I probably shouldn’t be operating advice machinery at the moment, but deadlines are deadlines. You should take my advice with a grain silo or two of salt, DRUGS, and everyone else should just skip this week’s column entirely. OK! Drugs! Here we go! My outside, exter-

nal, drug-positive-but-with-caveats (see below) perspective on your dilemma boils down to this: Do not make babies with this woman. Don’t scramble your DNA together with hers — not unless it makes your dick hard to think about begging this woman for permission every time you wanna smoke a little pot with a friend or take a fucking shit for the next 40 years. (And, trust me, you’re still going to want to smoke pot after the babies come.) If that kind of begging excites you, great. Have all the fucking babies. But if that doesn’t excite you … dude … run the fuck away. Yeah, yeah: You did a bad thing. You had an affair four years ago and you made the mistake of telling your girlfriend about it even though 1) she most likely was never going to find out about it and 2) you quickly came to regret it. Your regret wasn’t instantaneous — but the fact that you haven’t cheated on her since is a pretty good indication that your regret was sincere. And now here you are four years later, DRUGS, waking up every day and getting back to work on those trust issues. Because you’re still in trouble. Because you made the mistake of telling your girlfriend about an affair she would never have found known about if you had kept your mouth shut. But you know … come to think of it … maybe it was a good thing you that you told your girlfriend about the affair, DRUGS. Not because honesty is always the best policy. The famed couples counselor and author and podcaster and TED Talker Esther Perel urges people who’ve had affairs to consider the “burden of knowing” before they disclose. If you sincerely regret the affair and it’s not going to happen again and your partner is not in any physical risk and is unlikely to hear about the affair from a third party, sparing them the burden of knowing is the second-most loving thing a person can do. (Not cheating at all would, of course, be the most loving thing a person can do.) So to be clear, DRUGS, I don’t think telling your girlfriend was the right thing to do because all affairs must be disclosed. I think telling your particular girlfriend was the right thing to do because she’s telling on herself now. If she doesn’t feel like she can trust you ever again — and if she’s constantly on the lookout for new reasons why she can’t trust you — then she needs to end this relationship. But she hasn’t ended the relationship, DRUGS, and you need to ask yourself why she hasn’t. I have a hunch: She hasn’t ended it because she likes it this way. Someone who cheats and gets caught and discloses and wants to make it right can expect to spend some time, well, mak-

ing it right. They should expect to spend some time in the doghouse and, to extend the metaphor, they should expect to spend some time on a short leash. But a person can’t spend the rest of their life in the doghouse. A cheater has to take responsibility and be considerate about insecurities the affair may have created or worsened. But if a cheater has done all that and years later the cheated-on person won’t let them out of the doghouse — or is constantly finding new reasons to keep the cheater in the doghouse — then the doghouse is where the cheated wants the cheater. Forever. Which means instead of being angry you cheated on her, DRUGS, on some level your girlfriend is delighted you cheated on her. Because the wrong thing you did allows her to control you for the rest of your life. But it shouldn’t. And if she insists it does or that it should, DRUGS, you should leave her. About those caveats: You don’t specify the drug you used in the backyard with your friend but I’m gonna assume it was weed — which is legal where I live but not where you live. There is, of course, a big difference between stepping out to smoke a little pot after the girlfriend has gone to bed and sneaking out to smoke a lotta meth. And if you’re an addict and a little pot has led to a lot of harder drugs in the past, your girlfriend’s zero tolerance policy might be justified. But if we’re not talking about hard drugs and you don’t have addiction issues, DRUGS, you shouldn’t have to beg your girlfriend’s permission in advance — which she’s denied in advance — to smoke a little pot with a buddy. I’ve been listening to old episodes of the Savage Lovecast while working from home. Yesterday I heard you explain to straight male listeners that their straight female partners would say “yes” to sex more often if “sex” didn’t always mean the woman getting fucked. That really resonated with me, a straight woman with a male partner. When my husband came onto me the next night and I didn’t feel like opening up to get basted, instead of saying “no” I offered to jerk him off while he sucked my tits. It was great — for both of us!
