Though tempting to read as an April Fool’s prank, the news last Friday was all about Gov. Ron DeSantis and various legislative cronies going after Disney’s private government in Reedy Creek in retaliation for statements against the recently passed “Don’t Say Gay” legislation. This news put us in a bit of a pickle. On the one hand, the Reedy Creek Improvement District — or “the Vatican with mouse ears,” as Rollins College professor and acknowledged Disney expert Rick Foglesong calls it — is a morethan-questionable accommodation made by lawmakers back then in pursuit of Disney dollars. On the other hand, DeSantis and his enablers are doing this in a fit of bad-faith pique. Should we just let them fight it out? Our readers had thoughts. @Jon Martins Republicans throwing tantrums again. They should be sued. @Victor Chin Well, what did Disney expect when they paid their bribe money to politicians protecting their interests and suddenly all the political donations stop? @Myguyinorlando About time, Reedy Creek is corrupt, and anyone who does not know about the Disney council should look it up, puppets, not what Walt wanted, not by the people. @Daniel Joseph Higgins Nothing can stop us from being one of the most progressive-thinking counties in the state. Oh yeah — Disney, you may want to rethink donating to these babies. @Sandra Lianne Trowell Blah blah blah … all that chatter might may have meant something 40 years ago … now it’s just someone being catty for not getting his way. @Bill Boe And they even issued city utility bonds for a real city that never existed! Speaking of Florida’s recently passed “Don’t Say Gay” law (sigh), just days after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the legislation, LGBTQ-advocacy groups, parents, students and a teacher filed a federal lawsuit challenging the new law that includes barring classroom discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in early grades. The lawsuit, filed in the federal Northern District of Florida, seeks to block the state from moving forward with the law, which is set to take effect in July. Obviously this story got a lot of comments. @Rachel Erin Remember when this comment section used to pass the vibe check and then got hijacked by bigots who didn’t like that everything isn’t about them? @Thomas H. Sharp Though this bill is an unfortunate sign of the intransigent times, wouldn’t the uproar be better understood if the age perimeters involved were even junior high as opposed to K-3rd? @Ivan Williams Nice! Hope it’s able to be stricken due to the laziness of those who can’t homeschool or send their kids to private school. Also, the abject bigotry. @Chris Myers There is no don’t say gay law in Florida it’s a parent’s rights in education bill that says teachers can’t talk sexuality and gender with kids from kindergarten to third grade anyone that wants to talk to kids that young about it shouldn’t be allowed around kids also the majority of people that oppose the bill don’t have kids. @Timothy Wilson @Chris Myers It was never taught in grades K thru 3 or anything like it. It’s just another made-up problem Republican leaders invented to pretend to solve and make them look like heroes to their “poorly educated” followers. It also puts teachers and school workers in very dangerous positions much like the equally made up CRT debacle.

Florida Foolishness Smackdown Edition! U.S District court judges stomp the state’s various attempts to infringe upon Floridians’ constitutional rights »

Federal judge rules vote-by-mail changes are discriminatory against Black Floridians In a sharp rebuke to Republican lawmakers, a federal judge last week ruled that parts of a 2021 state elections law were intended to discriminate against Black Floridians. Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker also made the rare move of putting Florida under a process known as “preclearance,” meaning that he will have to approve any changes to certain provisions to the state’s elections laws. The state “has repeatedly, recently, and persistently acted to deny Black Floridians access to the franchise,” the judge wrote. Walker’s 288page decision came in a lawsuit challenging a law that imposed new restrictions on mail-in voting and third-party voter registration organizations. DeSantis and Republican legislative leaders quickly slammed Walker’s ruling and vowed to appeal. DeSantis and GOP lawmakers pushed the election-law changes after former President Donald Trump and his supporters hammered on unfounded allegations of widespread fraud in Trump’s 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden.

Judge refuses to block ‘intellectual freedom’ surveys on Florida college campuses Surveys aimed at gauging “intellectual freedom and viewpoint diversity” on college and university campuses are on track to go out to students and employees this week, after a federal judge refused to block the state from distributing the questionnaires. Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker on Friday rejected a request by opponents for an injunction against the surveys. Lawmakers and Gov. Ron DeSantis last year approved a law (HB 233) requiring schools to distribute the surveys annually. But the measure drew a legal challenge from the United Faculty of Florida union and other opponents who argued that it violates the First Amendment. With the surveys set to hit email inboxes, attorneys for the opponents filed an emergency motion asking for a preliminary injunction. During a hearing Friday, Walker expressed skepticism about the plaintiffs’ arguments. For instance, attorneys for the opponents asserted that the survey results could be used by the Republican-controlled Legislature to “suss out” which campuses have the most liberalleaning beliefs. Lawmakers could then take actions in retribution, such as cutting funding to certain colleges or universities, the attorneys said. Alexi Velez, a lawyer for the survey opponents, characterized the law as having a potential chilling effect on students’ and faculty members’ speech. “We have a First Amendment claim even if no funding is cut,” Velez said, adding that the “harm” of chilling speech would be immediate upon surveys going out. Velez also said “there is every reason to believe” that the identities of people filling out the surveys could be determined. Particularly at smaller institutions like state colleges, Velez argued, a respondent could be identified by basic demographic information that a survey asks.

Florida judge rules against religious school that wanted to pray over loudspeaker during championship football game In a long-running legal battle, a federal judge has rejected arguments that the Florida High School Athletic Association improperly prevented Christian schools from offering a prayer over a stadium loudspeaker before a 2015 state championship football game. U.S. District Judge Charlene Edwards Honeywell issued a 38-page ruling last Thursday that said the association, the governing body for high-school sports, is a “state actor” and did not violate First Amendment rights when it refused to allow a prayer over the public-address system before a game between Tampa’s Cambridge Christian School and Jacksonville’s University Christian School. Cambridge Christian filed the lawsuit, which the Tampabased Honeywell dismissed in 2017. The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in 2019 overturned the dismissal and sent the case back to Honeywell for further consideration. Last week’s ruling said the case “is not about whether two Christian schools may pray together at a football game,” noting that players and coaches met on the field of Orlando’s Camping World Stadium to pray before and after the game. “The issue before the court is whether the First Amendment required the FHSAA [the association] to grant the teams unrestricted access to the PA system to deliver the prayer over the loudspeaker during the pregame,” Honeywell wrote. orlandoweekly.com ● APRIL 6-12, 2022 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY

ell-known civil rights attorney Ben Crump has been hired to represent the father of the late Tyre Sampson, the 14-year-old boy who fell to a horrific death at an Orlando amusement park, sparking millions of views on social media. “This family is shocked and heartbroken at the loss of their son,” said Crump, who has an office in Tallahassee. “This young man was the kind of son every parent hopes for — an honor roll student, an aspiring athlete and a kind-hearted person who cared about others.” Crump released a written statement last week announcing that he has been hired by Yarnell Sampson, the teen’s father. A separate attorney, Bob Hilliard, of the Texas firm Hilliard Martinez Gonzales, has been retained by the boy’s mother, Nekia Dodd, according to a statement on Twitter. Crump has represented several families related to Black victims of police brutality by law enforcement, including the families of George Floyd, Trayvon Martin, Ahmaud Arbery, Martin Lee Anderson and Breonna Taylor, according to Crump’s website. During a press conference Friday, state Rep. Geraldine Thompson, a Democrat from Orange County, told reporters she’d been in touch with Crump about ways to prevent future fatal tragedies connected to Florida’s amusement park rides. The Black teen was visiting from Missouri when he appeared to fatally fall from his seat while riding the Orlando FreeFall located at Icon Park last week. Videos emerged on Twitter and other social platforms showing the unimaginable incident. “I am a mother, I am a grandmother, and this pains me,” said Thompson. “So, I’m very concerned and I have been in touch with attorney Ben Crump who represents the family.” Thompson continued, “In consultation with Crump and getting input from the family, they’re not interested so much in fixing blame, as in fixing the problem. And I will be working with them to fix the problem.”

hree days after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the measure, LGBTQ-advocacy groups, parents, students and a teacher filed a federal lawsuit Thursday challenging a new law that includes barring instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in early school grades. The lawsuit, filed in the federal Northern District of Florida, seeks to block Florida from moving forward with the law, which is set to take effect in July. While DeSantis and Republican lawmakers describe the law as boosting parental rights, it has drawn national attention as critics dubbed it the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. DeSantis, the State Board of Education, the state Department of Education and Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran are named as defendants, along with the school boards in Manatee, Sarasota, Miami-Dade, St. Johns and Jackson counties. The challenge focuses on a part of the law (HB 1557) that would prohibit instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade and require that such instruction in older grades is age-appropriate in accordance with state academic standards. Lawyers for the opponents, including the LGBTQ-advocacy group Equality Florida, argue in the lawsuit that the measure is discriminatory and “aims at sexual orientations and gender identities that differ from heterosexual and cisgender identities.” The 80-page complaint alleges that the law violates constitutional free-speech and equal-protection rights. Also, it contends that the law violates due-process rights because of “vagueness.” “H.B. 1557 piles one violation on top of another. It offends principles of free speech and equal protection by seeking to censor discussions of sexual orientation or gender identity that recognize and respect LGBTQ people and their families. It offends due process by using broad and vague terms to define its prohibitions — thus inviting discriminatory enforcement

and magnifying its chilling effect on speech. And it arises from discriminatory purposes and outdated sex-based stereotypes that offend deeply rooted constitutional and statutory requirements,” the lawsuit said. The lawsuit points to other parts of Florida law that require a “uniform, safe, secure, efficient, and high quality system of education” that is “made available without discrimination” on the basis of factors like race, ethnicity, gender, religion or marital status. It also cited “inclusivity efforts” by local school districts that focused on LGBTQ students. “H.B. 1557 seeks to undo all of this. Although it is formally entitled the ‘Parental Rights in Education Act,’ it is popularly and more accurately known as Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law,” the lawsuit said. DeSantis and the bill’s Republican backers have vigorously defended the measure and disputed the “Don’t Say Gay” moniker. DeSantis has accused lawmakers who opposed the measure and other critics of mischaracterizing the bill by “sloganeering.” The governor also argued that the bill’s detractors “support having woke gender ideology” in early grades. “I think that they’ve gone through sloganeering and all these things really out of desperation. Because they know they could never argue their position on the merits. They would … crumble, I think, under the weight of outrage from parents if they were actually standing on the wall and saying that they support those things,” DeSantis said before signing the bill. House Speaker Chris Sprowls, a Palm Harbor Republican who joined DeSantis for a bill-signing event, echoed the governor’s comments and took issue with objections to the bill by President Joe Biden’s administration and high-profile celebrities. “This was super easy to figure out what this bill did. And yet, people lied about it. The media lied about it. Advocates lied about it. Whether it was in the White House press room, or

Gov. DeSantis signed a wide-ranging package last week that includes providing bonuses to help recruit law-enforcement officers from other states and giving county sheriffs more autonomy over their budgets. The highest profile part of the measure (HB 3) is $5,000 recruitment bonuses for lawenforcement officers. With the law taking effect July 1, the state Department of Economic Opportunity is required to develop minimum eligibility requirements for the program. “We want to incentivize really strong, high-quality people to pursue law enforcement as a vocation in the state of Florida,” DeSantis said during a bill-signing ceremony at the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office in Titusville. “That may mean that you leave Seattle or Chicago or some of these places and come to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. But it could also mean that you’re somebody that’s in Florida trying to determine what you want to do with your life.” Other aspects of the measure include establishing a Florida Law Enforcement Academy Scholarship Program to cover basic-training tuition and fees for new officers and creating an exemption from certain law-enforcement training requirements for military veterans. Sheriffs, under the bill, will see their base salaries increase by $5,000 a year. Sheriffs will also get more leeway with their budgets after the spending plans have been approved by county commissions. Currently, sheriffs can appeal county budgetary decisions to the state Administration Commission, which is made up of the governor and members of the Florida Cabinet. But lawmakers included the change into the bill in response to a legal battle started when former Alachua County Sheriff Sadie Darnell shifted money within her budget. Alachua County fought the move, and the Florida Supreme Court in January ruled that the money couldn’t be shifted without approval from the county commission.

Firefighters allowed to pursue case over Facebook posts

A federal appeals court has cleared the way for two Palm Beach County firefighters to pursue a lawsuit over being disciplined for Facebook posts. A panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned part of a district judge’s rulings in favor of Palm Beach County. The case stemmed from an exchange between firefighters AJ O’Laughlin and Crystal Little on an invitation-only Facebook page associated with a campaign by O’Laughlin to become president of the local firefighters’ union. The exchange dealt with an accusation that a union official attempted to misuse time that firefighters had donated to a union “time pool,” according to Friday’s ruling. O’Laughlin and Little were disciplined with written warnings under a fire department social-media policy. They filed a lawsuit against the county, alleging that the policy unconstitutionally restricted free-speech and free-association rights and was overbroad and vague. A district judge dismissed or made summary-judgment rulings against them on the allegations, leading to the appeal to the Atlanta-based appeals court. The panel last week overturned the rulings related to free speech and whether the policy was overbroad. “It expressly prohibits ‘disseminating content’ that ‘could be reasonably interpreted as having an adverse effect upon Fire Rescue morale, discipline, operations, the safety of staff, or perception of the public,’” said the ruling, written by Judge Kevin Newsom and joined by Judges Stanley Marcus and Richard Story. Quoting a legal precedent, the ruling said “that ‘could be just about anything.’”

Getting some muchneeded inspiration and perspective while viewing local cultural mover-andshaker Pat Greene’s solo exhibition at FAVO 2022 was supposed to be the year

when Orlando fully rebounded from the pandemic, but although the theme parks’ attendance has returned to pre-pandemic levels, our arts and cultural scene seems like it’s been taking a step backwards for every forward pace. Over the past three months, negative news like the acoustically lackluster launch of Steinmetz Hall, authenticity issues surrounding OMA’s blockbuster Basquiat exhibit, and the abrupt exit of Blue Star from Häos on Church have overshadowed signs of potential progress, leaving me feeling increasingly frustrated about Central Florida’s artistic future. Looking for reminders of a less cynical time, last weekend I revisited one of my earlier sites of inspiration, and reconnected with the person who perhaps best represents the spirit of independent Orlando artists. The location was FAVO, Park Lake Presbyterian Church’s Faith Arts Village Orlando, which I first covered in Live Active Cultures nearly a decade ago (in the Jan. 8, 2013 issue); the person was curator Patrick Greene, whose last appearance in the column concerned his departure from the country (July 25, 2018), which (lucky for us) turned out to be shortlived. FAVO remains much as I first described it, a former “derelict Colonial Drive motel” whose “two floors of mod glass-fronted rooms make welcoming studio spaces.” Its initial “First Friday” open-house food truck events have expanded into public exhibitions on the first Friday and Saturday of every month. And I’m happy to see FAVO’s collective has fleshed out over the years from those first two “artists-in-residence” to over two dozen occupants spanning a diverse range of disciplines, from feminist painter Susana Youngsteadt to framer Geoff Gregory to sculptor Byron Walker, who uses a chainsaw to craft tactile puns from found objects — like a circle of keys in the shape of Florida. I found Greene in the rear of the complex, sitting outside Room 249, the ceramics gallery of his friend Richard Munster, whom Greene calls “one of the best, a great artist [and] an intellectual on a skateboard.” Greene, who has spearheaded regional public art projects like “Walk On By” and “TrIP,” most recently curated The Corridor Project

Billboard Exhibition, which he says went “even smoother than I anticipated.” But at FAVO, he put on display something far more intimate and personal than his usual largescale collaborations. “This is a show … inspired by the isolation of the pandemic,” explained Greene as he showed me around the small, stark room lined with pages covered by childlike doodles and cramped handwriting. “I was taking care of my friend’s mom for a few months, and I didn’t really have much of a social life at the time because I was in the house, and I couldn’t really have guests, [so] I started doing something that I hadn’t done in years, drawing little sketches.” As Greene admits, the resulting series of drawings are “almost cartoon-like, but they’re autobiographical,” sharing scintillating stories from his youth that I’d never known before. One recounts his father’s career as a drug smuggler and offshore banking entrepreneur; another heartbreakingly memorializes his lost childhood treasures, including his late dog and a homemade KonTiki raft; a third illustrates the time he met novelist Harry Crews, who “threw my boss through some drywall, which was really pretty funny because my boss really idolized him, and he wasn’t really very nice to anybody.” Some other pieces weren’t as explicit, but they were equally emotionally evocative: a crude watercolor reproduction of Edvard Munch’s Uninvited Visitors; or a snowy parking lot littered with shopping carts. “I like those abandoned landscapes,” says Greene. “I always think we have these amazing urban landscapes.”

Even though Greene is famous for his mayoral campaign slogan, “I don’t want to talk about it,” I took advantage of his introspective artistic mood to ask for his honest take on the current state of Orlando’s visual art galleries. It turns out Greene — who is currently working with several museums on a proposed multi-city event involving graphical musical scores — had plenty to say on the subject: “I think the pandemic kind of interrupted a lot of things, [and] real estate prices are so high nowadays. It really kind of feels like the idea of having a permanent space feels a little outdated. That doesn’t mean I don’t want it, but I feel like we might have to move with what the times are forcing us to move to. You almost need some other business next door that’s making a bunch of money. “I think that there’s a little too much bureaucracy here to stop you from doing a lot of things. … Orlando is a little micromanaged, and I think that if you really want to become a really cool space, that the reason people visit a lot of these [other] cities is because there’s the planned and the unplanned. I think there has to be about equal amounts of planned and unplanned, and I think that Orlando feels like a helicopter parent sometimes. “I wish there would be a little more respect for some kind of renegade public projects because I feel like the unknown is a little scary around here. … Even the institutions around here, they don’t trust the person that comes to them. … There’s a lot of people with a lot of money and spaces. rolls — specifically, the peanut avocado roll ($6). A vegan friend of mine suggested I try it, saying, “It exemplifies how simple ingredients can shine so bright when done right.” I won’t lie — the uramaki roll (rice on the outside) comprised an odd combination. With the avocado puree, it was like biting into a roll with crunchy peanut butter. No, I much preferred the toro scallion rolls served with the bluefin tuna trio ($37), featuring two pieces each of fresh and flawless akami, chutoro and luscious otoro. Real wasabi and beni shoga — julienned ginger pickled in plum vinegar — also graced the rectangular plate and needless to say, it’s a can’t-miss order. So is the Nobu-worthy black cod ($27), slicked in saikyo miso, broiled and served atop a banana leaf à la Mr. Matsuhisa. The fish is even garnished with a pink-and-white hajikami ginger spear. Hey, imitation is the greatest form of flattery, I suppose. If the cod weren’t wonderfully flaky, buttery and mildly sweet, I might have had a, well, beef with the dish. But I didn’t. The cod was gobbled down along with Ootoya’s blue crab fried rice ($18), colored with green soybeans and yellow corn. Lovers of specialty rolls have about 40 or so from which to choose. Personally, I’d rather see a reduction in rolls and a greater variety in their sushi/sashimi selection, but folks love sushi with cream cheese, mayo and kiwi, so concessions and considerations have to be made; it’s just good business sense. What Ootoya’s menu achieves, however, is balance — and it’s a balance both sushi purists and roll wreckers will appreciate.

Florida Film Festival a personal point of view by that one man who lived and experienced it all firsthand. Were you a Beatles fan from the jump, or when did you first start listening to their music? I grew up enjoying Beatles music. My mom was a huge fan growing up and shared her love for The Beatles with me. It was a band and a mania that happened well before my time, so I didn’t get the full grasp of it until I met [producer] Mark Bentley and saw his love and admiration for everything Beatles. I must say it’s infectious, and having had the privilege to grow up with Colin, John, George and Paul the past three and a half years we’ve spent making the film, I have a whole new appreciation for them as individuals and as artists. There’s a timeless quality to their music and nostalgic beauty to the storytelling in their lyrics you can’t help but love. That’s what I hope you walk away with after you experience PRE FAB! — a deeper understanding of how this phenomenon known as The Beatles started. When did you first become aware of the Quarry Men and hear their music? It was July 2018. I got a call from Mark Bentley, who had just finished reading the book PRE FAB! by musician Colin Hanton and author Colin Hall, and had just returned from a trip to Liverpool where he had met Colin Hanton. He pitched me the story and the idea for making a doc about it and I was hooked!

So after reading his book, you formed a relationship with Colin Hanton. What was his reaction to the finished documentary? After Mark Bentley and I first got our heads together about turning the book into a feature-length documentary film, we presented the idea to both Colin Hanton and Colin Hall. On projects like this where there is a book or biography involved, the usual first step is to make an offer to option or buy the rights to that story. But in this case, we both knew we wanted the Colins onboard as co-producing partners for the long journey ahead. The friendships we have formed with them are great and they have watched this film take shape every step of the way. I’ve felt a deep commitment to both the Colins to preserve and tell this story in a way that will entertain and serve as a musical time capsule (if you will) for generations to come. And now that we have a chance to give audiences a first look at the film we are so close to finishing, they are probably more excited than we are. Was it daunting to try and add something new to the mountain of Beatles and Beatles-adjacent history and research and tributes? What’s so great about PRE FAB! is it’s the last Beatles story to tell (ironically) about how it all began. And what I found so great about Colin Hanton’s perspective in the story is that he is the only guy on planet Earth that was there the day John met Paul, the day John decided to change from a skiffle band to rock & roll and the day Paul introduced everyone to George. No one else can say that. What was the most surprising thing you learned in the process of making this film? Besides meeting and forming so many fun and amazing relationships along that way, it was really interesting to witness what an impact everyone’s lives had on the music they wrote, and how that music, in turn, has had such a great impact on our lives.

The panther is our state animal, but like so many of the attributes Florida claims to treasure, the reverence is mostly lip service. As we destroy our ecosystems, bit by bit the panther’s habitat disappears and so do they. This documentary seeks to at least record the animals’ presence, if they can’t be saved. (Netflix) Michela Giraud: The Truth, I Swear! — The Italian actor/ stand-up comic takes the stage in Rome to offer an unflinching description of her upbringing, body issues and other stuff you’re going to find positively hilarious. (Shudder) Senzo: Murder of a Soccer Star — This month, five suspects are scheduled to go on trial for the 2014 killing of Senzo Meyiwa, captain of the South African soccer team. But first we’re getting this five-episode docuseries about the case, just to make sure jury selection isn’t too easy or anything. (Netflix) Tokyo Vice — In Michael Mann’s series adaptation of the 2009 nonfiction book, Ansel Elgort plays an American journalist who gets shown the ropes of Japan’s criminal underworld by a veteran cop (Ken Watanabe) in the late 1990s. On their first assignment together, they learn that “the lost decade” isn’t actually a kidnapping case. (HBO Max)

PREMIERES FRIDAY: All the Old Knives — A CIA agent played by Chris Pine attempts to learn the identity of an agency mole who caused over 100 deaths; in the course of his investigation, he realizes one of the key suspects is his ex-girlfriend (Thandie Newton). He probably should have suspected something was up when she named Julian Assange as her hall pass. (Amazon Prime) Dancing on Glass — Two ballerinas with the Spanish National Dance Company retreat from the pressures of their lives by pursuing a relationship that lets them hide from the real world. Because as you know, dancers are normally thoroughly immersed in reality. (Netflix) Dirty Lines — In 1986 Amsterdam, some forward-thinking young entrepreneurs launch Europe’s first phone-sex line, to take advantage of a new wave of freedom that’s sweeping the continent as the Cold War comes to an end. The top queries: “What are you wearing? And how long did you have to wait in line to get it?” (Netflix)

iCarly — Season 2 of the revival reunites star Miranda Cosgrove with her former Josh & Drake castmate Josh Peck, who’s now playing Carly’s manager. Meanwhile, Dan Schneider, creator of both properties, is off somewhere reuniting his hard drive with photos of women’s feet. (Paramount+) Metal Lords — Take that, Rock of Ages: This comedy flick about three teenagers who try to headbang their way to a battle-of-the-bands win is so credible there’s even a shot of frickin’ Manowar in its trailer! Plus, Tom Morello oversaw the music, and the script is by D.B. Weiss, co-creator of HBO’s Game of Thrones. The only way a film could be more metal than that is if the ghost of Lemmy showed up in a mid-credits sequence. And we all know better than to rule that out. (Netflix) Pinecone & Pony — Here come eight animated episodes based on the 2016 Children’s Book Award winner The Princess and the Pony, in which a girl warrior tries to make a fighting steed out of a cute little horse with a gas problem. Hey, tell us about it. We’ve spent those ensuing six years trying to do the same thing with Stephanie Murphy. (Apple TV+) Tiger & Bunny 2 — Twelve years after its Season 1 first aired in Japan, the anime series about corporate-sponsored celebrity superheroes is finally back for another go-’round. Since then, of course, we’ve had The Boys up to our eyeballs, so will the concept retain its allure? Well, one of the new heroes on the team, Magical Cat, announces cryptically that “My ability isn’t shooting out the water I drink.” Whatever that leaves, I bet Homelander could have a field day with it. (Netflix) Woke — Cartoonist Keef Knight tries to balance social justice with commercial temptations in Season 2 of the series that’s kind of like a politically aware My World … and Welcome to It. Up against the wall, mother-Thurber! (Hulu) Yaksha: Ruthless Operations — Shenyang, China, is the site of a showdown between South Korean black operatives and a Japanese spy who masquerades as a lobbyist. You know, it’s always interesting to learn about cultures in which a lobbyist isn’t the worst thing you could be. (Netflix)

PREMIERES TUESDAY: The Creature Cases — Two animal detectives solve the mysteries of the nonhuman world in an animated series that’s engineered to impart zoological facts to kids ages 4-7. I fully expect those children to follow in the footsteps of us oldsters and drop the show like a hot potato the minute they realize it’s trying to teach them something. (They’ve had to do enough learning at home these last few years anyway.) (Netflix) Hard Cell — Catherine Tate of The Office and Doctor Who fame takes on multiple roles in a mockumentary series set in a women’s prison. The plot framework has the inmates gearing up to put on a big theatrical production, which puts the show squarely in the tradition of Marat/Sade, Muppets Most Wanted and a bunch of other things that don’t coexist within anyone else’s brain but mine. Listen, at least I didn’t mention all of the plays I’ve seen that felt like being in prison. (Netflix)

SOUND ADVICE Henry Rollins is a man you can trust BY S H E LTO N H U L L

t’s said that only two things in life are certain — death and taxes. You can also add “Henry Rollins returns to Florida” to that list, except people actually look forward to that one. Rollins has been a public figure for over 40 years, but each time we see him, it seems to be in a slightly different version. The man who sourced his performing alias from a certain local private college in Winter Park (an in-joke to make close friend and musical comrade Ian MacKaye chuckle) returns to perform at the Plaza Live on Thursday. It’s Rollins’ first show in the Sunshine State since the pandemic began.

It’s hard to imagine Rollins being affected by anything, but he was, much like most of us. “Travel was out almost immediately,” he says via an email exchange with Orlando Weekly. “Touring was over with. Lack of mobility for me was quite a change. I dealt with it but it wasn’t easy. I had to figure out how to do things without going places to do them. So, a lot of writing projects, etc.” Rollins, who just turned 61, is probably best-known as the fourth lead singer of Black Flag, America’s greatest punk band, a position he held down from 1981 to 1986. Following that, he spent 20 years as leader of the Rollins Band, whose

run peaked in the early ’90s with MTV staples like “Low Self Opinion” and “Liar.” Never one to rest on his laurels, Rollins ended the band in 2007. (He also sang for Wartime and SOA, his original band.) Altogether, he’s sung on at least 27 albums of his own, not counting the cornucopia of bootlegs available, as well as 17 spoken-word albums and 13 video releases. He’s also made guest appearances on tracks by Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Bad Brains, Misfits, Minor Threat, Goldie, Flaming Lips, Tool, Mike Watt, Les Claypool, Iggy Pop and, oddly enough, William Shatner. Rollins expresses no intention of ever playing music again, although the door remains open just far enough to squeeze a single hair through. Instead, the notoriously high-energy Rollins has plied his trade in a diversity of fields, including writing, acting, activism and his spoken-word material. Indeed, there is a whole generation of fans for whom Rollins’ musical career is entirely tangential. The concept of “spoken word” as its own genre largely originates with Rollins’ output, which began late in his Black Flag run. Spoken word is distinct from poetry and comedy, although it contains elements of both. Rollins has no children, but he did inspire the alias of Colby Lopez, aka “Seth Rollins,” a four-time WWE champion. He also appears as a playable character in the legendary 2004 video game Def Jam: Fight for NY, which was largely inspired by wrestling, so Rollins is technically WWE canon. Rollins has written for publications like Details, Vanity Fair, the Huffington Post and LA Weekly, for whom he wrote a column for several years before quitting in solidarity with laid-off staffers. He’s authored at least 43 books and chapbooks since 1984, mostly through his own imprint, 2.13.61. Rollins has also appeared in at least 63 different movies and TV shows, most recently providing the voice of Tri-Clops on the He-Man reboot. (He also starred in He Never Died in 2015, which is a personal favorite of ours.) We all have regrets, some more than others. But what about Rollins? “Not sure,” he says. “I don’t do much that would be considered random. I do a lot of planning. There were things I did that I had no idea would fail so completely, like getting an office space in New York City and hiring people to work there. One of them stole a lot of money and wrecked things for a while.” There is one mistake, however, that sticks out: “I had a ticket to see Queen and Thin Lizzy and opted [instead] to get the ton of homework I had to do finished.” We covered a lot of ground in a short interview, but it was the last week of March, and the unwritten rules of journalism required us to ask him about that week’s big story, which involved a couple of 50-something actors clout-chasing off each other. “A rich and talented man slapped another rich and talented man in a room full of rich and talented people who made an occasion to celebrate themselves and let the world watch them be rich and talented, as if it’s really something to see. Apparently, it’s news. Not to me. De-escalation? Sure, don’t bring a gun to a riot.” That’s always sound advice, especially in an election year.

Back in December, the latest mixtape by Orlando label Moki Tapes (… third) featured a couple of very exciting debut peeks. One of them was new Orlando heavy band Weak, whose pulverizing single “The Swamp” was the comp’s opening track. Now, Weak have officially emerged on their own with the fresh release of the Life, Death & Foxes EP, and this first collection is a much fuller account of their savagery. It’s four muscular bolts of hardcore that merge dire, freefalling intensity with chugging technical breakdowns. Their clean, clear attack makes them hit with unequivocal force — no unnecessary murk or atmosphere here, just head-on and point-blank. According to bandleader Danny Forester, the record’s general theme is “seek more and fear nothing,” which is slyly spelled out in the song titles: “Seek,” “more,” “fear” and “nothing.” Although Weak is a new band, it’s the personification of material that Forester (a longtime musician known more these days as owner of Mills 50 coffee camper Framework Craft Coffee Bar and partner at the Nook on Robinson) began writing over a decade ago that’s just now being finished and released. This new EP is only the initial offering (Side A) of a two-part release. The full Life, Death & Foxes is actually an album’s worth of music planned for later release. The EP’s now streaming everywhere. But — psst — you can get a peek of, and even download, the full album on their Bandcamp right now. Just note that Side B, which features the newly written songs, is an unmixed, unmastered demo version, so listen accordingly. Even so, the whole thing’s a comprehensive introduction to an impressively brutal new force in Orlando music.

When Orlando trad-psych flagbearers Timothy Eerie emerged from a two-year hibernation lull last year, it was on an optimistic note with the balmy “We’re Going to Make It,” which suited the occasion. But their latest high-revving double single — “I Fear the Void Is Waiting for Me” b/w “Acid Lake” — is Timothy Eerie in their most thrilling gear. Although “I Fear the Void Is Waiting for Me” is the sunnier track, winkingly sneaking in a riff from the Beatles’ “Day Tripper,” it still rides harder on a sweet biker-gang groove. “Acid Lake,” however, is a boss-ass acid-rock burnout that’s an onslaught of heavy riffs and pumping organs. The songs are now streaming everywhere and are available bundled as a 7-inch vinyl record on Bandcamp.

Wolf-Face 10-Year Anniversary Show:

These Tampa cult heroes play punk rock while dressed as an all-Teen Wolf basketball team. If you know nothing more of them, that alone should be incentive enough to check them out. But if you do know them, then you know their shows are a total hoot — er, howl. With soaring anthems, a huge sense of fun and, again, wolf faces, these guys know how to get wild. For their 10-year anniversary, you know Wolf Face will be coming a little extra. Notable openers are Gainesville’s You Vandal and Orlando’s Vicious Dreams. (8 p.m. Saturday, April 9, Will’s Pub, $10) The Darkness: If ever there were times in need of escapism, these are them, baby. Few serve up classic rock glory with as much flamboyance and excess as these British peacocks. An orgy of guitars, falsettos and wardrobe, their shows push glam rock out to the blurred line between true belief and self-parody. And unlike Greta Van Fleet, their ridiculousness isn’t unintentional. (6 p.m. Sunday, April 10, The Beacham, $32.50-$38.50) Luna Luna, Dent May, Pearl & the Oysters: This chill bill is a distinguished trifecta of easy-listening indie pop. Dallas band Luna Luna specialize in slinky pop zephyrs with R&B grooves. Dent May has become an indie darling with his wondrous pop ways and soft-rock hues, but possibly the most notable feature is the homecoming of Florida-grown band Pearl & the Oysters. Since leaving Gainesville for L.A., their spacey lounge pop — which is like Stereolab for the Jetsons — has been released by labels like Burger and Feeltrip.
