PRES PRE SS CL CLUB Tasty Chomps founder Ricky Ly joined the Orlando Weekly Press Club because: ‘Orlando Weekly provides power to the people’ What would Orlando be without the pages of Orlando
Weekly? Whether it’s the piercing observations and commentary of the late, iconic Billy Manes in “Happytown” as he sat in on City of Orlando Council meetings, or Faiyaz Kara’s quirky gastronomic adventures into Orlando’s far-flung restaurants and mom-and-pop shops, or the annual “Best of Orlando” that gives us a list of local Orlando businesses and restaurants to try out for the next year – without these pages, we would be missing out on so much that makes Orlando the City Beautiful. The free, fiercely independent Orlando Weekly is the quintessential local’s guide to Orlando for so many transplants like myself who have come from all over the world to find home here in Central Florida. Inside its pages, the stories can be at times offbeat and irreverent, and sometimes, particularly in its investigations into Orlando’s underbelly of injustices, it can be explosive, inspiring change in our community. Today, people depend on journalism from Orlando Weekly and other local media outlets in order to be informed of what’s happening in our communities – playing a vital role in our democratic society. If knowledge is power, journalism and outlets like Orlando Weekly provide power to the people – information and knowledge that empowers us to decide how we spend our time, what matters to us, and what the world is like – so that perhaps we, the reader, can make the decisions to make the world what it can potentially be. For over 30 years, we have depended so much on Orlando Weekly and its writers and staff, to stay informed and to be entertained. Today, the changing financial landscape has created a need for new economic models to keep Orlando Weekly sustainable. For several years now, local newspapers and magazines find it harder and harder to survive with less revenue from the advertising dollars that increasingly are spent on decidedly “not news” outlets such as Facebook and Google. It’s gotten even bleaker with the current lockdown situation due to the coronavirus pandemic. If you find value in the voices of Orlando Weekly, in the value these pages bring to our Orlando’s arts, culture, entertainment, music, dining and nightlife communities – and if you have the privilege and ability to – I encourage you to join me in donating today and becoming a sustaining member in the new Orlando Weekly Press Club. It’s a donation to thank Orlando Weekly for all it has done for us through the years, and an investment in the future of our city – making our independent local journalism sustainable for now and years to come. Ricky Ly is a graduate of the University of Central Florida currently working as a civil engineer in Orlando. He is the founder of the massively popular local food blog TastyChomps.com, and the creator and administrator of Orlando Foodie Forum Facebook group. He currently serves the community as a board member for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

Faraway, so close
Social Distancing at 85mm, a series of front-porch portraits by Matt Keller Lehman Just because we’re all sternly admonishing you to “stay at home, stay at home” like a broken record doesn’t mean we don’t miss you all. We do. A whole lot. Orlando is so much more than the attractions that the world at large knows us for: It’s the people, the wonderfully quirky and resilient people who make up the backbone of the city. And being isolated away from so many of our friends hurts, but we know it’s incredibly necessary for all of us to stay home, stay safe and stay well. Orlando Weekly photographer Matt Keller Lehman was eager to do a porch portrait series of Orlandoans in lockdown, and we all quickly compiled a list of just a few near and dear to our collective hearts. Seeing these portraits and reading their words made them seem closer and infinitely farther away at the same time. But that’s life for the moment. Enjoy these portraits of some of your fellow citizens, and we hope to see you all soon. — Matthew Moyer and Jessica Bryce Young
Matt, behind the lens It’s only fair we turn the tables and ask you a few questions. So how did this idea come to you? Was there one moment or incident? Absolutely. When things got real mid-March I knew I had a window to get out of town and drive to Dallas to see my sister, brother-in-law and nieces. The day I got back, the city shut down. I had a lot of time to think during my trip, though. I needed a new project. My photo contracts were inevitably going to be a sea of ashes. I also knew how it was going to affect other people and the isolation that accompanied the ‘Stay at Home’ decision. I knew it would be ripe to start capturing people from afar, on their porches. Because that was the new, unfathomable norm. It just made sense. The next couple of days I started riding my bike around more and seeing how this was unfolding in the soul of my neighborhood. How many of your neighbors do you know now that you didn’t before? Good question. I’m having longer chats with them from afar … We all smile and nod now; a small little ice-breaker for when I see them elsewhere around town after this ends. “Hey, I think you live in my neighborhood. I’m Matt.” (And then we bump elbows, I guess.) Why the title “Social Distancing at 85mm”? Tell us a little about the technical and logistical aspects of this project. Shooting with my 85mm for this seemed appropriate given the distance, especially at the beginning. I had a few subjects who were concerned about the idea of a shoot. They assumed I would need to get close to them. I reassured them I’d be at least 10 feet away. I had just gotten back from shooting the barren streets of New Orleans (on the way to Dallas) before the virus swarmed that city, so I wanted to make sure I wouldn’t potentially infect someone if I had brought home the COVID funk. How is the pandemic affecting you personally? It’s a day-to-day mission to try and stay focused. I rolled the dice with the full-time freelance chess game a couple of years ago and make 90 percent of my income taking photos of people in relatively crowded environments. Everything, both locally and nationwide, received an indefinite death punch. I had a really bad day last week. I woke up angry. Angry with our overall leadership, ignorant people, the whole situation in general. At the peak of it, I got a phone call from my 95-year-old grandmother. She told me I was on her mind and something told her to call me. You can’t script that stuff. Since then, if that cloud rolls in, I just remind myself that I’m not alone and my only option is to weather the storm with a combative smile. I’m usually an optimistic guy but man, that day destroyed me for a bit.

Jeff and Erin, Conway What are you doing to stay productive around the house throughout the day to stay positive during these times? Playing music, drawing, small art projects, pretty much more of what we normally do. Do you have any takeout recommendations? What Will’s Pub is doing right now is pretty great. He’s doing takeout craft cocktails at really reasonable prices, and the social distancing/safety procedures he has in place are very conscientious. Any local Orlando residents or businesses streaming on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube you recommend? Southern Fried Sunday has been a godsend. It’s helping us feel at least a little more connected to our community.
Any new hobbies you’re finally getting a chance to work on? We’ve discovered we’ve developed talents for making Jeff & Erin-shaped indentations in our couches. Top three things you miss about Orlando and can’t wait to experience again when this is over? Hugging our friends, family and going to/playing gigs. Any local artists you’ve been enjoying on social media right now? Really loving Gatorland’s “School of Croc” right now. Savannah Boan has done a fantastic job educating people all over the world about our natural wildlife friends. We tune in every day at 10 a.m. on Gatorland’s Facebook page. It’s all LIVE and all cool. Are you sticking to the tried-and-true foods in the kitchen or experimenting more? Not cooking anything too adventurous lately due to lack of funds right now. We’re just keeping it pretty basic with the essentials. Comfort food, pretty much. If you could be anywhere else besides your house right now, where would you like to be? Mars. orlandoweekly.com

Lana, Longwood What are you doing to stay productive around the house throughout the day and stay positive during these times? During this time of quarantine I have devoted much of my time to being creative. I am a hairstylist so I find myself expressing myself through any creative means I can. I have always said I wanted to improve my eyeshadow skills, so I have now taken the time to do so. Some days I wake up in the mood to work out, so I do just that. My days now revolve around my mood … I really have no set schedule. One day I may feel like watching a movie, the next day I’m doing a new hairstyle on myself or my family members. My family, I must say, are the main reason I am able to stay so positive … we have one another’s backs! Top three things you miss about Orlando and can’t wait to experience again when this is over?
The top three things I miss about Orlando are the beaches, dining in at certain restaurants, and all the dance classes Orlando now offers. I cannot wait to be able to just lay out on the beach and suck in all the sunlight, go out to eat with fam/ friends, and attend all the dance classes I was attending. So in a nutshell … all of the human interaction I was able to have before this pandemic. If you could be anywhere else besides your house right now, where would you like to be? If I could be anywhere else right now, it would be on vacation … preferably Bali! Music or podcast recommendations? Some music I would recommend would have to be Jhené Aiko’s new album, Chilombo – she uses sound healing bowls throughout her music, and they definitely help put you in a peaceful state of mind.
Lindsay and Clover, Colonialtown What are you doing to stay productive around the house and stay positive? Staying positive through all of this has been tough some days. I try to not give myself too hard of a time though and just make sure I’m doing productive things other days. I’ve been cooking a lot, working on my plants, making my outside spaces really enjoyable, having a fair amount of cocktails and taking too many pictures of my animals. Top three things you miss about Orlando and can’t wait to do again when this is over? 1) Friends! Technology helps us all see each other and keep in contact. But I miss hugs and in-person conversations and stories. 2) Restaurants. Obviously we can get takeout, but we all know that eating it fresh at the restaurant with friends or your partner is the best way to go. 3) Bars! Happy hour, Sunday funday, late nights, live music, pretty patios, all my favorite bartenders. If not takeout, are you sticking to the tried-and-true foods in the kitchen? If experimenting more, what are you cooking up? I really love cooking already. So, I have been trying new recipes but also perfecting all the classic dishes. Breads, stocks and broth, the perfect scrambled eggs, Bolognese sauce. It’s been really fun, challenging and time-consuming.

Lisa, Mills 50 What are you doing to stay productive around the house throughout the day to stay positive during these times? I seem to be more productive than ever. Ohhh, I’m not one of those making beef Wellington or learning Mandarin Chinese, but I’m enjoying doing things I’ve never done and not having to rush! Like live stream ballet barre and stretch with local Jack Sherwood – I haven’t done that since the ’70s … a live stream dance party, Sweat Spot Ryan Heffington … getting a whole music education nightly with Questlove – even a meditation directed by Diva Zappa’s mentor, Tintori … following JR thanks to his introduction by Patrick and Holly Kahn of Snap Gallery – following Big Freedia from New Orleans after first seeing her at Will’s Pub … and actually enjoying live streams from local politicians: Carlos Guillermo Smith, Anna Eskamani, our mayors (but my favorite is Anna Eskamani – educational and sooo much fun!). And how could I forget: I’m working on my “I-Survived-as-an-ERNurse-COVID-19” adult scouting badge. And furthermore biking through all the districts of Orlando, be it Milk, Ivanhoe, Colonialtown, Audubon – the weather is fabulous! Anything outdoors is divine! Do you have any takeout recommendations? Sooo many great choices … Domu, Tori Tori, Pom Pom’s, Tako Cheena and Bites and Bubbles – all touchless and amazingly different! And I can’t forget Conrad’s Shanty. I think Tim Jaeger is smiling at me behind that mask, and his ever-creative persistence selling White Claw is worth the bike ride! Any local Orlando residents or businesses streaming on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube you recommend? Anything with Kaleigh Baker is a win-win, be it Will’s Pub or Southern Fried Sundays! Also Corrine of Alchemy’s live feed hair dyeing tutorials – I’m waiting for the advanced cutting class as I think I’m already pretty good with bangs. And not live streaming, but my postman is always good for a big smile and wave, and a huge shout out to the recycling bin folks! (wink wink nod nod)
Andrew and Ross, Coytown What are you doing to stay productive around the house throughout the day to stay positive during these times? Andrew’s job as an HR/recruiting consultant really hasn’t changed too much; he has worked from home for the past 10 years so this is normal. He used to travel to meet clients once or twice a month, but that’s obviously been canceled. Ross is in sales and is used to traveling around Central Florida every day. Now he is trying to figure out how to stay in touch with his customers and sales team via phone and Zoom. He does have a lot of downtime and as a result the yard and house have never looked better. Top three things you miss about Orlando and can’t wait to experience again? We live in Coytown, the greatest neighborhood in Orlando (we may be biased). We miss hanging out with our awesome neighbors, inviting people over to hang out and giving big hugs! And we cannot wait to go out to eat again. We’re just dying to have a meal at Maxine’s bar for brunch and people-watching on the sidewalk at Briarpatch. We miss taking our best friend Dexter to the dog park and hanging out with our dog park friends. Do you have any takeout recommendations? We have been trying not to eat out at all, we have plenty of food and when we need something we use Instacart. However, we could not resist getting some Domu wings and ramen when we learned they were offering takeout for the first time ever. Book recommendations? For pleasure: Less by Andrew Sean Greer; Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty; Imagine Me Gone by Adam Haslett. For professional development: Dare to Lead by Brene Brown; Upstream by Dan Heath. 12

Any new hobbies you’re finally getting a chance to work on? I’m thinkin’ of tryin’ to learn to spin dryer lint and cat hair, as I’m running out of knitting yarn. Also enjoying old hobbies leisurely: doodling, watching things grow, biking adventures to new neighborhoods. Top three things you miss about Orlando and can’t wait to experience again when this is over? Things I miss most: – my service industry folks – I miss being waited on – someone else doing the dishes!!! – I miss a live band/DJ and dancing on a sweaty packed dance floor!!! – I miss the Venue and Blue Star and all my burlesque buddies … but the Venue came down before the plague. Have you heard any stories about locals using their creativity to provide support and positivity to the neighbors in their community? Let’s see, local stories of doing good … someone in my neighborhood, a guy named Raymundo, mailed little packages of sunflower seeds to plant, watch grow and brighten our hood! And my favorites are local folks like Clay Watson, who is cooking for local musicians out of work, and Kadence and Sette, who have closed their restaurants to prepare meals for service industry folks out of work. If you could be anywhere else besides your house right now, where would you be? There’s no place like home. Although a massage table or a hug in a pub sounds pretty fabulous about now. Netflix/Prime/other streaming recommendations? After taking the high school photo challenge and wondering why I had that haircut, I remembered Jane Fonda in Klute … what a flashback movie. It only took me five hours and a smorgasbord of movie snacks to watch it.

Charlotte, Rosalyn, Jordan and Edgar, Dr. Phillips What are you doing to stay productive around the house throughout the day to stay positive during these times? Edgar: Since COVID-19 hit, I’ve been fortunate to still work from home. It has forced me to do many things that I should be doing on a regular basis, such as yard work, organizing/ purging, and cooking more often than usual. I’ve been more active outdoors, working out in parks and riding my bike every day. My wife, Rosalyn, has been keeping busy with our 3-month-old, Jordan. That’s a full-time job on its own. Jordan is still living the life during the quarantine: being fed wonderful meals, sleeping well and getting relaxing sponge baths on demand. Luckily, she was born before the quarantine madness hit. [For] my daughter Charlotte, video editing and TikTok are some of her favorite things to do. When she wants to take a break from being inside, she’ll draw and paint on our porch to get some fresh air. She’s also been spending a lot of time in our pool listening to music.
Any new hobbies you are finally getting a chance to work on? Edgar: Not necessarily, but it has forced me to become my own barber. I bought some clippers and a hand mirror online. I also ordered a basketball on Amazon ( just shooting around in the park by myself, sometimes I shoot around with Charlotte). Cutting my own hair and playing basketball were two things I loved to do in my adolescent years. Any music recommendations? Edgar: Music I’ve been listening to lately is Jack Harlow and Kota the Friend. Charlotte: Brent Faiyaz and Jessie Reyez. Rosalyn: Jordan has been listening to lullaby versions of Dr. Dre, Notorious BIG, Bob Marley, Backstreet Boys, U2, Radiohead, Wham!, Michael Jackson, the Cure, N*Sync and New Kids on the Block. orlandoweekly.com

Leigh Anne, Lake Como What are you doing to stay productive around the house throughout the day and stay positive during these times? I spend most of my time playing with and teaching my 2- and 4-year old children. It’s hard not to be positive with their energetic nature and sunny dispositions! However, I do have a lot of anxiety about the current pandemic, and I’ve found that the best way to combat my anxiety is to help others however I can. Mainly, in my down time, I am making masks for our healthcare workers and for community members as part of the #MillionMaskChallenge, spearheaded locally by Andrea Ruiz-Hayes. This initiative started around the country as a grass-roots sewing movement and has expanded to include crafters of all types. Some of the members of this group in Gainesville, in conjunction with the University of Florida, developed a prototype for medical-grade masks using a material called Halyard 600. Orlando Health has called upon our local chapter for 43,000 masks for their healthcare workers. In addition to easing my anxiety and directly helping people, sewing the masks has also brought me closer to several community members who are key coordinators and producers in the #MillionMaskChallenge (namely Lisa Morgan, Jennifer Sutphin and Vanessa Loomie) and to my daughter, who has learned to sew just so she can be a community helper too! 16

Top things you miss about Orlando and can’t wait to experience again when this is over? We miss the Orlando Science Center, the Orlando Library, Delaney Park and Lake Como Park! The kids and I go routinely to the programs at the downtown library and the Science Center. Also, we visit almost daily either Delaney Park or Lake Como Park. We cannot wait for these amazing venues to be open again! Have you heard any stories about locals using their creativity to provide support and positivity to the neighbors in their community? It really is amazing to see how everyone in the community is coming together to care for one another. For example, our neighbor Bethany, a teacher at Audubon Elementary, had the idea to create the red and green signal system for our street. Another neighbor, Leah, an artist and art teacher, created an interactive art project called the Great Gnome Project for the neighborhood. Tina Cintron and Tairi Danger Perez, residents of our Lake Como Neighborhood, have been coordinating activities such as Bear Hunt, Sidewalk Chalk Art Walk and Easter Egg Hunts for kids of all ages to participate in as they walk through the neighborhood. There is something new to look forward to every day!
Kurt (aka DJ Nigel), Winter Park What are you doing to stay productive and positive? Working from home with my day gig as a youth advocate. Searching for new music and old music that I missed out on the first time. I have a fairly big record collection and there are some records that I have purchased that I haven’t listened to. Now I have a lot of time to listen to them. I have also been doing some Instagram live mixes on my page, @blacksuede66, about three times a week. I have scheduled ones where I play Mondays at 7:30 p.m., Tuesdays at 12:30 and other times when I just feel like playing music. Catching up on the ridiculously long list of shows and movies on my Netflix queue and reading. Any new hobbies you’re finally getting a chance to work on? Learning to play the bass guitar. If you could be anywhere else besides your house right now, where would you like to be? Stardust coffee and video or one of the many record stores, or vintage shops in town. Book recommendations? Erich Fromm’s The Sane Society, Simon Reynolds’ Rip It Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978-1984, Henry Miller’s Air Conditioned Nightmare. Going to try to finish David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest … again.
Savannah, Delaney Park What are you doing to stay productive around the house throughout the day to stay positive during these times? I work for Gatorland, “the Alligator Capital of the World,” and since the park is closed we’ve been very busy bringing Gatorland to the people through various live interactive forums. School of Croc is our Facebook Live show airing every morning at 10 a.m. except Sundays. Do you have any takeout recommendations? I’ve been eating a lot of Tijuana Flats tacos! It’s pretty much my daily. Any new hobbies you’re finally getting a chance to work on? I’ve been working on speaking Spanish and doing a better job at editing YouTube videos. Do you have any stories you’ve heard about locals using their creativity to provide support and positivity to the neighbors in their community? I’m a big fan of Anna Eskamani’s “Run the World” video compilation. That made me wanna run for office. Zooming in to Real Radio 104.1 every morning and getting to see and participate in conversations with a cast of friends I’ve known for years has been a blessing. If you could be anywhere else besides your house right now, where would you like to be? I got back from a conservation trip to Australia right before this all started and have since missed a trip to India where I was going to work with some amazing animals. Hopefully things clear up soon as I should be headed to Cuba soon! What are you reading? I’m currently reading a book called In the Belly of the Beast about wildlife conservation and I’m studying The Genesis of Animal Play. My fun read is Donde Viven Los Monstruos or Where the Wild Things Are in Spanish so I can practice. That way I can read it to the kids in Cuba on my next trip. orlandoweekly.com

Art and Karen, Dr. Phillips What are you doing to stay productive? We are enjoying getting to projects that have been on our “to do list” for years and have just finished recovering the seats on six dining room chairs that are almost 100 years old! The chairs were inherited from Art’s mother’s relatives in Canada. Since the two of us couldn’t get out to shop to get supplies, we ordered webbing and foam padding and staples for our staple gun online. Now the chairs are finally done and they certainly are much more comfortable than the horse hair padding (literally) that we found when we took the seat covers apart! Any hobbies you are finally able to focus on? For over 50 years, we have wanted to tackle our genealogy/history and get into the piles of books, papers and historical memorabilia, and also reproduce a “scroll of history” that we inherited from Art’s mother. The scroll was published in 1893 and goes back to when Art’s ancestors left England and France in 1619 to come to America. We have the only remaining copy. We Scotch-taped and repaired the old, torn, fragile pages from this historical scroll, then found a company downtown that took pictures of every page so that a CD could be produced, and also this fabulous family history was then put on nine thumb drives for our four children and Art’s brother’s five children for posterity. In our days of quarantine, we are working on so much more genealogy from both our sides of the family which is mind-boggling. We are so grateful to have this time to start this fun and memorable project which will be a lifelong gift for our children and grandchildren. We want to do projects that are positive, worthwhile and life-changing during this upside-down time, a time that could be stressful but can be turned around for good.
Omar and Olga, Thornton Park Have you heard any stories about locals using their creativity to provide support and positivity to the community? Face masks and face shields are in high demand now, so I am currently helping design artwork on products from Winter Park Paws Shop and Litewave. Winter Park Paws, owned by Alicia Vales and partner Chelsey Rodriguez, are marketing and advertising the face shields and masks … our goal is to provide designs that represent the city of Orlando and help bring awareness that we all should wear protection when we are outside of our home. Litewave, owned by Lisa Walker, is developing LED bandannas with my artwork printed on it. Her goal is to bring joy and light during these hardship times. Are you ordering takeout right now, or are you sticking to the tried-and-true in the kitchen? If experimenting more, what are you cooking up? I used to be big on ordering takeout but that can be costly. I am back on buying groceries which is better for me. I love to cook and try new recipes to help build my immune system, which is important during these times. I recently started cutting meat in my diet. BBQ eggplant with seasoned sweet potatoes and chopped red onions is my go-to meal. It’s quick and easy to make. Music recommendations? To stay focused when either painting or creating digital designs, I listen to classical music by Joep Beving, Max Richter and Phillip Glass. I also just discovered a wonderful musician and true artist, Kelsey Lu. orlandoweekly.com

Tyla, Jayla, Peyton and Billy, Lake Mary What are you doing to stay productive around the house throughout the day to stay positive during these times? Tyla: I’m a photographer and filmmaker. When the restrictions began, that meant not being able to complete existing projects or keep appointments. To maintain sanity, to sharpen skills and pass these skills along, my family and I started doing photoshoots at home and filming corresponding tutorials. We also started on quick and easy short films done in the home. My oldest started learning how to paint. Doing the things we love has enabled us to remain positive during these times of uncertainty. Do you have any takeout recommendations? Our family LOVES DaJen Eats. Vegan food with a Jamaican flair! Top three things you miss about Orlando and can’t wait to experience again when this is over? We miss going to Bronze Kingdom, Red Tape Orlando and just being out in nature. I miss the beach. Got any book recommendations? A classic: Their Eyes Were Watching God by Eatonville’s own Zora Neale Hurston. Music or podcast recommendations? Thundercat, It Is What It Is, and SoulBase Songs to Quarantine To. Streaming recommendations? Horribly amazing, campy and just a guilty joy all around, Nip/Tuck on Hulu when you’re done with Tiger King. orlandoweekly.com

Twisted Root in Winter Park saves its hide with better burgers – and a staples market BY FAIYAZ KARA
T
wisted Root carved out its niche in better burgerdom by offering its guests ground critter exotica like camel, emu and, uhh, beaver among other wacky proteins stuffed between the buns. Founders Jason Boso and Quincy Hart expanded their reach throughout Texas before the allure of franchising beckoned. Now, amid the coronavirus outbreak, all the corporate-run Twisted Root burger joints are shuttered, while the ones that remain open for takeout, curbside and delivery are the four franchised locations in Birmingham, Shreveport, San Angelo and in Winter Park. Glenn and Jennifer Pilson opened Twisted Root back in November inside the Grove plaza off Aloma Avenue. They’re no strangers to franchises either, having run a handful of Five Guys around Central Florida as well as a couple of Chicken Salad Chicks. But the pandemic threw their budding burger joint for a loop, and the effects are being felt by Twisted Root’s employees. “You wouldn’t be able to find an empty
seat in here four weeks ago,” says the manager when I pick up my order. “The bar area is always hopping, we’ve got live music, and now …” She shrugs and lets out a sigh in the direction of the only customer in the place – me. Corporate-backed restaurants and chains may be in a slightly better position to endure the downturn, but not so for franchisees like the Pilsons, who say business is down 95 percent since they opened. The pandemic has halted booze service, limited their meat offerings, shut down the pickle bar and frozen sales of their custard shakes. (They have opened a market selling staples like flour, sugar and TP.) “Thank you so much for coming in and supporting us. Please come back again!” The plea had an air of desperation about it and I just felt so horrible for them – feeling horrible for restaurateurs has been a common practice for me of late. Even as
I bit into their Le Wagyu ($12.25) burger, I thought of their plight for survival. The burger itself, touted for its use of local beef (I wasn’t able to ascertain from where exactly), is Dijon-crusted and topped with Gruyère. Didn’t see the thyme caramelized onions the menu promised, but it’s a burger I’d really like to enjoy at the restaurant itself one day. Same goes for the buffalo burger ($10.75). Getting it in the classic manner (with lettuce, tomato and cheddar cheese) let the unadulterated flavors of buffalo come through. I liked the toasted brioche bun as well. Didn’t disintegrate into a mess even after the 20-minute drive back home. As I alluded to earlier, exotic meat options aren’t being offered, at least not until this whole thing blows over, but you can have cheese fries ($4.50) – hand-cut fries (or hand “punched,” as the menu says) topped with a whole lot of melted cheddar cheese – with your burger. For $4 more, you can get those cheese fries topped with brisket, bacon and a fried egg, which is practically a meal in itself. If I’m being honest, I’m not one to get better burgers to go. They seem to depreciate a lot quicker than other foods, and reheating them for me is out of the question. But when you get a craving for one during these times, there’s little option. I can’t wait to get the full Twisted Root experience – beaver meat, sweet-and-spicy pickles, boozy shakes and all. I just hope that when the pandemic is said and done, there’s no twist ending. fkara@orlandoweekly.com
the diningin diaries BY FAIYAZ KARA
Virtual happy hours and dinners are a thing now. But I hadn’t participated in one myself, until I was invited to a virtual wine dinner a couple of weeks ago by Dexter’s New Standard and Tim’s Wine Market. I didn’t really know what to expect, and I’m not sure chef Ryan McLaughlin of Dexter’s or Tim Varan of Tim’s Wine Market did either. I picked up the meal from the restaurant, along with prep instructions and two bottles of wine – a bright 2016 Chanzy Bouzeron Aligoté and a silky 2017 Chateau Laplagnotte Bellevue with its merlot-cab franc blend. The three-course meal consisted of charcuterie (highlighted by lomo, coppa, Humboldt Fog and some pickled veg), a deconstructed Greek salad with heirloom tomatoes, and braised short ribs served with a sunchoke puree. After boarding the charcuterie and putting together the salad (the tomatoes from Waterkist Farms were unreal), we tuned into Instagram Live for the “virtual” segment of the dinner. Varan talked about the Aligoté, which paired incredibly well with the meats, cheeses and salad. The gathered chimed in with comments of approval, and a genuine sense of community formed quickly. This was, dare I say, fun. McLaughlin entered the fray to say that the dinner afforded many of Dexter’s furloughed employees the opportunity to work again. I set the short ribs I had just warmed into a swoosh of sunchoke puree as Varan came back to talk pairings. The Right Bank Bordeaux was a beaut – an “easy” pairing, someone said. And if you’re considering taking part in their next wine dinner on May 8 (it’s $135 per couple), the decision, much like the wine, should also be an easy one. (Dexter’s New Standard, 1035 N. Orlando Ave., Winter Park, newstandardwp.com. To RSVP for the May 8 Virtual Wine Dinner, call 407-8959463 by May 6.)

HEY MR. DJ, STREAM THAT SONG
Veteran Orlando DJ BMF brings his raucous themed music video sets to Twitch BY MATTHEW MOYER
O
rlando DJ institution BMF – né Greg Lentz – knew something wasn’t right a few minutes into his last night at Mills 50’s Lil Indies, just before St. Patrick’s Day. “It wasn’t a normal busy Friday night,” he remembers. “Any time someone coughed, everyone would look around. It was nerve-wracking.” Soon enough he found himself sheltering at home amid the coronavirus pandemic, with all of his nights at Iron Cow and Lil Indies canceled for the foreseeable future. So, like a growing number of local musicians and DJs, he took his sets online. Thus far in April, BMF has presented a tribute to classic ’90s hip-hop with Yo! BMF Raps, his Set It Off ’80s Freestyle night and the Purple Reign Prince tribute night (a longstanding local tradition), all on his Twitch channel, twitch.tv/DJ_BMF. What BMF does has come to be known as VJing, a hybrid of the classic DJ set with an equal focus on accompanying videos, cut and mixed just as carefully as wax. The visuals are culled from BMF’s massive collection of music videos, rare performance clips and related pop-culture ephemera, used to maximum effect for his creatively themed nights. “I mix music videos just like you would records,” says BMF. “I’ve always been into
videos and collected DVDs, and finally the technology caught up to where I could use turntables to manipulate videos and the music.” And one advantage of an online stream is that the total focus of the watcher is on the video collages. This begs the question, though: In the “old days” (last month), a DJ could simply glance up from the turntables and see if bodies were moving on the floor, but how does a DJ take the temperature of a room now? Check the chat room? Well, yes. “The chat room will actually give you energy!” says BMF. “Just like on a dancefloor where you’d see people respond when you play a certain song, you’ll see people in the chat room go, ‘Oh shit!’ “It’s funny, the numbers are kind of similar to a Friday night at Indies. It feels like an intimate house party. … I try to make these as entertaining as possible and help people forget about what’s going on for a few minutes.” BMF is committed to keeping the party going for the duration. His next event is “Ill Scenario” on Monday, May 4. Peep his Facebook (facebook.com/deejaybmf ), Twitter (twitter.com/djbmf ) and Instagram (@djbmf ) for more announcements. mmoyer@orlandoweekly.com

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Is there an area of your life where you would like a doover? A chance to cancel the past and erase lingering messiness and clear a path for who-knows-what new possibility? The coming weeks will be an excellent time to prepare – not to actually take the leap, but rather make yourself ready for the leap. You will have God and fate and warm fuzzy vibes on your side as you dare to dream and scheme about a fresh start. Any mistakes you committed once upon a time could become irrelevant as you fantasize practically about a future breakthrough. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) In 1855, Gemini-born Walt Whitman published his book of poetry Leaves of Grass. A literary critic named Rufus Wilmot Griswold did not approve. In a review, he derided the work that would eventually be regarded as one of America’s literary masterpieces. “It is impossible to imagine how any man’s fancy could have conceived such a mass of stupid filth,” Griswold wrote, adding that Whitman had a “degrading, beastly sensuality” driven by “the vilest imaginings.” Whitman’s crafty Gemini intelligence responded ingeniously to the criticism. In the next edition of Leaves of Grass, the author printed Griswold’s full review. It helped sell even more books! I invite you to consider comparable twists and tricks. CANCER (June 21-July 22) In your efforts to develop a vibrant community and foster a vital network of connections, you have an advantage. Your emotionally rich, nurturing spirit instills trust in people. They’re drawn to you because they sense you will treat them with care and sensitivity. On the other hand, these fine attributes of yours may sometimes cause problems. Extra-needy, manipulative folks may interpret your softness as weakness. They might try to exploit your kindness to take advantage of you. So the challenge for you is to be your generous, welcoming self without allowing anyone to violate your boundaries or rip you off. Everything I just said will be helpful to meditate on in the coming weeks, as you reinvent yourself for the future time when the coronavirus crisis will have lost much of its power to disrupt our lives. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Now is an excellent time to take inventory of your integrity. You’re likely to get crucial insights if you evaluate the state of your ethics, your authenticity and your compassion. Is it time to boost your commitment to a noble cause that transcends your narrow self-interest? Are there ways you’ve been less than fully fair and honest in your dealings with people? Is it possible you have sometimes failed to give your best? I’m not saying that you are guilty of any 28
of those sins. But most of us are indeed guilty of them, at least now and then. And if you are, Leo, now is your special time to check in with yourself – and make any necessary adjustments and corrections. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) I predict that you will have more flying dreams than usual in the coming weeks – as well as more dreams in which you’re traveling around the world in the company of rebel angels and dreams in which you’re leading revolutionary uprisings of oppressed people against tyrannical overlords and dreams of enjoying eight-course gourmet feasts with sexy geniuses in the year 2022. You may also, even while not asleep, well up with outlandish fantasies and exotic desires. I don’t regard any of these likelihoods as problematic. In fact, I applaud them and encourage them. They’re healthy for you! Bonus: All the wild action transpiring in your psyche may prompt you to generate good ideas about fun adventures you could embark on once the coronavirus crisis has ebbed. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) It’s time to work your way below the surface level of things, Libra; to dig and dive into the lower reaches where the mysteries are darker and richer; to marshal your courage as you go in quest of the rest of the story. Are you willing to suspend some of your assumptions about the way things work so as to become fully alert for hidden agendas and dormant potentials? Here’s a piece of advice: Your fine analytical intelligence won’t be enough to guide you through this enigmatic terrain. If you hope to get face to face with the core source, you’ll have to call on your deeper intuition and non-rational hunches. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) When was the last time you researched the intricacies of what you don’t like and don’t desire and don’t want to become? Now is a favorable time to take a thorough inventory. You’ll generate good fortune for yourself by naming the following truths: 1) goals and dreams that are distractions from your primary mission; 2) attitudes and approaches that aren’t suitable for your temperament and that don’t contribute to your maximum health; and 3) people and influences that are not in alignment with your highest good. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky believed that the cleverest people are those who regularly call themselves fools. In other words, they feel humble amusement as they acknowledge their failings and ignorance – thereby paving the way for creative growth. They steadily renew their commitment to avoid being know-it-alls, celebrating the curiosity that

such blessed innocence enables them to nurture. They give themselves permission to ask dumb questions! Now is a favorable time for you to employ these strategies. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) What wonderful improvements and beautiful influences would you love to be basking in by May 1, 2021? What masterpieces would you love to have as key elements of your life by then? I invite you to have fun brainstorming about these possibilities in the next two weeks. If an exciting idea bubbles up into your awareness, formulate a plan that outlines the details you’ll need to put in place so as to bring it to fruition when the time is right. I hereby authorize you to describe yourself with these terms: begetter; originator; maker; designer; founder; producer; framer; generator. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) If I asked you to hug and kiss yourself regularly, would you think I was being too cute? If I encouraged you to gaze into a mirror once a day and tell yourself how beautiful and interesting you are, would you say, “That’s too woo-woo for me”? I hope you will respond more favorably than that, Aquarius. In fact, I will be praying for you to ascend to new heights of self-love between now and May 25. I will be rooting for you to be unabashed as you treat yourself with more compassionate tenderness than you have ever dared to before. And I do mean EVER! PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) In the coming weeks, I’d love to see you get excited about refining and upgrading the ways you communicate. I don’t mean to imply that you’re a poor communicator now; it’s just that you’re in a phase when you’re especially empowered to enhance the clarity and candor with which you express yourself. You’ll have an uncanny knack for knowing the right thing to say at the right moment. You’ll generate blessings for yourself as you fine-tune your listening skills. Much of this may have to happen online and over the phone, of course. But you can still accomplish a lot! ARIES (March 21-April 19) I always hesitate to advise Aries people to slow down, be more deliberate and pay closer attention to boring details. The Rams to whom I provide such counsel may be rebelliously annoyed with me – so much so that they move even faster and with less attention to the details. Nevertheless, I’ll risk offering you this advisory right now. Here’s my reasoning, which I hope will make the prospect more appealing: If you commit to a phase in which you temporarily invoke more prudence, discretion and watchfulness than usual, it will ultimately reward you with a specific opportunity to make rapid progress.

APRIL 29-MAY 5, 2020 ORLANDO WEEKLY

“AROUSED STATE” I’m a 31-year-old woman. Last week I suddenly started to experience an overwhelming, compulsive and near-constant state of physical arousal. I’ve masturbated so much looking for relief that my entire lower region is super sore and swollen and still, it’s like my whole body is pulsating with this electric arousal telling me to ignore the pain and do it again. I have no idea if it’s normal to suddenly have a spike in libido, and I know a lot of people will say they wish they had this problem but it’s interfering with my daily activities because I can’t focus on anything else. My college classes are suffering because of it. I’ve even had to remove my clitoral hood piercing, which I’ve had for over 10 years! I feel like I have all of the reasons – high anxiety related to the pandemic, being stuck with an alcoholic boyfriend in the house, tons of homework, finances are low – to warrant a lack of arousal, so why am I drowning in it? Everything I’m learning in class states that sexual desire lowers throughout the lifespan so why am I literally pulsating with it? I really don’t want to call my doctor if I don’t have to. Any insight would be appreciated. Chronically Aroused “There’s a general belief that sexual arousal is always wanted – and the more the better,” says Robyn Jackowich. “But in reality, persistent and unwanted sexual arousal can be very distressing.” Jackowich is a Ph.D. candidate at Queen’s University, where she works in the Sexual Health Research Lab. Jackowich has published numerous studies on persistent genital arousal disorder (PGAD), a condition characterized by a constant or frequently recurring state of genital arousal – sensations, sensitivity, swelling – in the absence of sexual desire. “In other words, there is a disconnect between what is happening in one’s body and mind,” Jackowich says, “and this can be both distressing and distracting.” And while you would think stress would tank your libido – and preliminary research shows that the pandemic is tanking more libidos than it’s not – stress and anxiety can actually be triggers for PGAD. As you’ve learned, CA, you can’t masturbate your way out of this. So what do you do? Unfortunately, it’s the thing you’d really rather not do: call your doctor. “It’s important to meet with a knowledgeable healthcare provider to ensure there is not another concern present that may be responsible for the symptoms and to access treatment,” Jackowich says. “Research on treatments for PGAD is relatively new, so it can be helpful to meet with a team of different healthcare providers to find what 30
ORLANDO WEEKLY ● APRIL 29-MAY 5, 2020 ● orlandoweekly.com
treatments would be most effective for you specifically. This could include a gynecologist, urologist, pelvic floor physical therapist, neurologist and/or psychologist with expertise in sex therapy.” Talking with your doctor about this may be embarrassing, I realize, and it doesn’t help that many doctors are unfamiliar with PGAD. Jackowich actually recommends bringing printouts of information pages and research papers about the condition to your appointment and sharing them with your physician. And if your doc doesn’t take your distress seriously and/or refuses to refer you to the specialists you need to see, CA, then you’ll have to get yourself a new doctor. (You can find those information pages and research papers at sexlab.ca/ pgad, where you can also learn about currently available treatments and join support groups for sufferers.) I’ve rekindled a romance with an ex from a decade ago. We are long distance right now, but getting very close. We have one recurring problem, though. She does not like that I am friends with another ex. That ex has actually been a close friend for a very long time and our friendship means a lot to me. Our romantic relationship only lasted a few months. But since we did have a romantic relationship once, my current girlfriend sees my ex as a threat. I have reassured her several times that the relationship is in the past and we are now only friends. But my girlfriend doesn’t want me to communicate with her at all. She wants me to unfriend her on Facebook and unfollow her Instagram, and at least once a week she asks if we have been in contact. It is hard for me to throw a friend away in order to be in a relationship. Even though I don’t talk to my ex/friend all that regularly, I would like the option to at least check in every once in a while. Cutting her out of my life completely feels like a kind of death. I wish there were some way I could find a compromise, but this seems to be one of those “all or nothing” things. I also don’t like this feeling of not being trusted and fear it could lead to other problems down the line. Unhappy Girlfriend Has Sensitivities I can see why your current girlfriend might feel threatened by your relationship with an ex, UGHS, seeing as she – your current girlfriend – was until very recently just another one of your exes. Since you got back together with her, the green-eyed monster whispers in her ear, what’s to stop you from getting back together with your other ex? What the green-eyed monster doesn’t say, of course, is that you had every opportunity to get back together with your ex and
didn’t. And cutting off your ex now doesn’t mean you can’t get back together with her later. And what’s to stop you from getting together with one of the 3.5 billion women you haven’t already dated? You have to take a hard line on this. Tell your current you’re happy to provide her with a little reassurance when she’s feeling insecure about your ex, but you’re not going to unfriend or unfollow her, or anyone else. You can make an appeal to reason – you wouldn’t be with your current girlfriend if you were the sort of person who cut off contact with his exes – but if your current girlfriend is the irrationally jealous type … well, an appeal to reason won’t help. Irrationally jealous people are by definition incapable of seeing reason, UGHS, which is why they must be shown doors. This isn’t a sexy question, but you are wise and I am confused. I have been friends with a woman for about 16 years. She’s very funny, creative, loves to have a good time. She’s also intense, not very bright, and my family and friends do not like her around. Now that we’re grown, we do not see each other often, but I’ve been glad to maintain a friendship with her and get together now and again. Enter: my wedding. At the reception she made a fool of herself (and me) by going on some strange, racist rant. The racist thing really surprised and disappointed me, and when I asked her about it she shrugged it off like, “Oh, just add that to the list of dumb things I do when I’m drunk.” Other things she’s done when she’s drunk: two DUIs, waking up in jail with an assault charge, having sex with strangers, etc. It’s been about seven months since my wedding and I’ve basically been ignoring her while trying to decide what to do. I love my friend, but I do not want her hurting anyone else on my watch. Do I call her up and end it? See her once a year when no one’s around? Ignore her until she dies? Loyal To A Fault Tell your racist friend to give you a call after she gets sober and confront her about her racism then – you know, when she’s actually capable of remembering the conversation, reflecting on what you had to say, and perhaps changing for the better. If she can’t get both sober and better, LTAF, make sure she isn’t registered to vote and then ignore her until she dies.
