» Universal Orlando parkgoer died after riding Epic Universe’s Stardust Racers

A man has died after riding Epic Universe’s Stardust Racers, police said last Thursday. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said off-duty deputies responded to a “man down call” within Epic Universe last week. Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, 32, was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Orange-Osceola Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death accidental last week, saying Zavala died from “multiple blunt impact injuries.” The attraction was closed following the incident and remains closed as of press time. “We are devastated by this event and extend our sincerest sympathies to the guests’ loved ones,” Universal Orlando officials stated. “We are fully committed to cooperating with this ongoing investigation.” Stardust Racers is a dual-launch coaster that reaches speeds up to 62 mph and heights up to 133 feet across the 5,000 total feet of track. The height requirement is 48 inches, and it is classified as a “thrill ride.” The ride is located in the park’s Celestial Park area. Epic Universe has been open for just over three months.

» Ren Theatre condemned by fire department amid annual Halloween tradition, ‘Nosferatu’

The Ivanhoe village home of Orlando’s Renaissance Theatre Co. is condemned as of Friday afternoon, after an annual inspection by department officials, co-founder Donald Rupe said. The department placed neon-hued “condemned” stickers on the building’s doors late last Friday. A notice to vacate was also placed on the building located at 2201 McRae Ave. The closure came as the theater presents its annual Halloween immersive show, Nosferatu. Rupe said the city’s requested changes are “totally surmountable,” and the company will work with the city to address the issues, although the future remains uncertain. “Rest assured, the building itself is okay, and the Ren is okay,” Rupe said in a statement Saturday. However, “a temporary closing like this is a threat. … To lose another queer-friendly venue, in a moment where we need them so desperately, would be devastating.” The City of Orlando has not yet responded to a request for more information.

» Orlando City Council said they wanted to significantly expand red light camera program

According to city documents, the city currently has 45 traffic infraction detectors (i.e., red light cameras) set up at 25 intersections across the city. Most are concentrated downtown, representing less than 5 percent of the more than 500 intersections within city limits. The intersections where cameras have been set up have been identified as particularly dangerous, based on collected crash, injury and fatality data. As part of the city’s “Vision Zero” plan, launched with a goal to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2040, the city is now looking to kick the program up a notch. Under a proposed expansion, subject to a public hearing and approval by Orlando City Council, the city would add 55 more cameras at intersections identified as dangerous through a study conducted by the city. Potential targets for the new cameras include multiple intersections along Colonial Drive (including the no-left-turn Colonial and Mills Ave.), and several intersections on John Young Parkway and Kirkman Road, among others. According to city documents, Orlando issued more than 60,000 violation notices to drivers from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025, and issued 20, 412 uniform traffic citations for unpaid fines — collecting a whopping $7.6 million in revenues total, split between the city and the state government.

» Disney World’s oldest gorilla, Gino, died Gino, a 44-year-old western lowland gorilla and one of the very first residents of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, has died. “For nearly 30 years, Gino touched countless lives at Disney’s Animal Kingdom with his playful spirit, gentle humor, and steady presence as a devoted father and troop leader,” Disney shared in a statement on social media. Gino arrived at the park when it opened in 1998 and quickly became a fixture along the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. Weighing more than 400 pounds, he was known for his commanding presence, often standing tall and beating his chest in dramatic displays. As the troop’s elder and father of 14 offspring, some of whom still live at the park, Gino played a vital role in both his family and in conservation efforts. He participated in a Disneydeveloped care program that allowed animals to assist with their own medical treatment, helping advance global practices in gorilla care without the need for sedation.

» Florida cut the number of bear hunt permits to be issued

With more than 100,000 permit applications submitted for a December bear hunt, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has reduced the number of permits that will be issued — and the number of bears that may be killed — by 15. After saying last month that it would issue 187 permits, the commission has reduced that number to 172, according to its website. A commission spokeswoman didn’t give an explanation for the decrease. The 23-day hunt is scheduled to start Dec. 6 and be held in four regions of the state. Permits will be issued through a lottery-style process, with people who receive permits each able to kill one bear. As of last Friday, 100,296 permit applications had been submitted. Permit applications, which cost $5 each, were accepted online through the end of Monday.

» Florida rent law repeal takes effect Oct. 1

A more than decade-long push by business groups will pay off next week with the end of a state sales tax on commercial leases. The tax, widely known as the business rent tax, will go away Oct. 1 as part of a wide-ranging tax package that lawmakers passed in June. The business rent tax began in 1968, when the state sales-tax rate stood at 4 percent. The rent tax rate increased as the overall salestax rate went up in 1984 and 1988, reaching 6 percent. Over the past decade, with business groups clamoring against the tax, legislators slowly chipped away at the rent tax rate. It has been 2 percent since June 2024, according to a House staff analysis. The elimination is projected to collectively save businesses nearly $1.15 billion during the current fiscal year, which will run through June 30. That amount is projected to increase to $1.53 billion next fiscal year.

FAKE CLINICS, REAL MONEY

Florida Democrat revives effort to end controversial taxpayer-funded anti-abortion program

Florida Democrat Kelly Skidmore has, for the second year in a row, filed a bill (HB 6001) that seeks to abolish a controversial program, funded by taxpayers, that promotes alternatives to abortion for people in Florida who are pregnant.

The state’s “Pregnancy and Wellness Services” program, also described as an “alternatives to abortion” program, was first established by Republican Gov. Jeb Bush in 2005 as an explicit attempt to deter women from seeking abortions.

Although it started out with a budget of just about $2 million, its budget has ballooned under “pro-life” Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has signed into law measures to restrict abortion access.

Since 2022, the program’s budget has increased more than fivefold, from $4.45 million in 2022 to nearly $30 million in this year’s budget. Rep. Skidmore, a legislator from the Boca Raton area, says it’s time to cut out some of the bloat.

“I believe that if you’re going to DOGE our counties and our cities, then start in your own house,” Skidmore told Orlando Weekly, referring to a “government efficiency” initiative launched by DeSantis earlier this year that seeks to eliminate wasteful spending from the state government.

While the mission of Florida’s anti-abortion program includes encouraging options such as adoption and parenting, it also funnels millions of dollars each year into unregulated pregnancy resource centers, often run by religious groups or charities, that systematically pose as licensed health clinics and use deceptive tactics to lure women in who are seeking actual abortion care.

“Taxpayer dollars must not be used to prop up centers that operate like clinics in name only, with guidance that discourages appropriate medical evaluation,” Skidmore said in a statement. “HB 6001 would allow us to redirect state dollars to evidence-based healthcare programs that provide a full range of reproductive care, including prenatal, postnatal and family planning services.”

A booming industry

Florida’s anti-abortion program, similar to taxpayer-funded programs operating in more than a dozen states, is operated by the Florida Pregnancy Care Network. The not-for-profit group contracts with the state Department of Health and subsequently divvies out state

funds received through that contract to dozens of anti-abortion organizations across Florida.

While these anti-abortion centers don’t offer abortion care, they often promote services such as free pregnancy tests, free STI testing and ultrasounds — even if they don’t have licensed medical personnel on staff or have a license to provide medical care.

They also often claim to offer “confidential” care, even though — because they aren’t regulated as medical clinics — they in fact do not have to abide by patient privacy protections under federal HIPAA.

Take Apopka Pregnancy Center, for instance: a facility in Central Florida that received $76,000 from Florida’s state-funded anti-abortion program last year. State records show the facility, described as “Christian-based” and “life-affirming,” does not have any kind of medical license.

But it does offer free pregnancy tests, “options counseling” and “post abortion support,” according to its website. The site states that the facility does not perform abortions, nor do they refer people to actual, licensed abortion clinics.

Many of these facilities, in Florida and elsewhere, have been accused of using manipulative tactics to lure in pregnant people (particularly low-income women with fewer resources) and shaming or tricking them into carrying their

provides legal counsel to these anti-abortion centers, reportedly told its member facilities to avoid performing ultrasounds on people they suspected could have an ectopic pregnancy — a potentially life-threatening condition.

As NBC News reported in June, the warning came in the wake of a lawsuit filed in Massachusetts that accused a crisis pregnancy center of failing to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy, resulting in life-threatening complications for its client.

“Pregnant people seeking confirmation of pregnancy, answers to questions, and decision-making support may seek care at a CPC without realizing that the information they receive is intended to discourage them from abortion,” a brief from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists states.“This can delay their ability to seek nonjudgmental, compassionate, respectful care from a health care professional, whether or not they ultimately decide to continue their pregnancy.”

Even before the fall of Roe v. Wade in 2022, these anti-abortion pregnancy centers outnumbered actual abortion clinics in the U.S. more than 3 to 1. In Florida, where abortion is banned after six weeks of pregnancy, there are 49 licensed abortion clinics, compared to an estimated 161 anti-abortion centers.

According to the Crisis Pregnancy Center

If you didn’t know your tax dollars support the anti-abortion movement in Florida, now you do.

pregnancy to term — sometimes by lying about how far along a pregnancy is, sometimes by falsely claiming abortion increases the risk for developing certain types of cancer.

“I think that every taxpayer should be outraged that we’re spending $29 million on these centers that don’t provide medically accurate information,” Skidmore argued.

The National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA), a “life-affirming” group that

funds to actual abortion providers. Florida also requires pregnant people to attend at least two appointments with an abortion provider in order to legally get the procedure, and largely restricts minors from getting an abortion without parental consent.

‘I’ll never stop trying’

Rep. Skidmore, who says she’s advocated for the abolition of this program since it was first established, similarly filed legislation last year that aimed to strengthen regulation of these anti-abortion centers that receive state funds (since not all of these facilities do). The bill, however, was predictably ignored by Florida’s Republican-controlled state Legislature when they met this spring and ultimately died without getting even an initial hearing.

This is the first time Skidmore has proposed getting rid of the $30 million program altogether. It comes after the operator of the program, the Florida Pregnancy Care Network, reportedly spent $5 million in taxpayer funds last year on ads that downplayed the negative impact of Florida’s six-week abortion ban.

The ads, notably, aired ahead of a critical election in which Florida voters were given the chance to vote for or against a ballot initiative that sought to strengthen abortion rights in Florida. Although the measure, Amendment 4, got a 57 percent vote of support from voters, it didn’t surpass the minimum 60 percent threshold that’s needed for a ballot measure in Florida to pass.

The state Department of Health reportedly tried to pressure the anti-abortion nonprofit into airing negative ads about Amendment 4, but according to the Tampa Bay Times, the nonprofit refused — choosing instead to run more “neutral” ads. Shortly after that, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis submitted a budget proposal that would have similarly nixed the nonprofit’s contract with the state.

“I do think he had ulterior motives,” Skidmore told the Weekly. “But that should show some conservatives and Republicans who are moderates that there is an opportunity here that we haven’t had before.”

Skidmore’s bill, in order to pass, would need to garner the support of a fair number of Republicans in the state Legislature. Although the likelihood of its passage is unlikely — considering the GOP majority’s willingness to restrict abortion access already — Skidmore asserts that she’s not ready to give up the fight.

Map, a project led by a group of public health researchers at the University of Georgia, Florida has the second-highest number of these anti-abortion centers in the U.S. It’s an industry that has boomed since the fall of Roe, according to 19th News, which reported last year that states have increased anti-abortion center funding by more than $500 million.

State and local governments in Florida, meanwhile, are forbidden from providing taxpayer

“I’ve never stopped trying, and I will continue until I’m no longer there,” she said.

Republicans, she added, “are supposed to be the fiscally conservative folks in the room, so they should be more than willing to support something that would save the state $29 million. Because it should not be a state-supported function.”

If approved by the Florida Legislature, Skidmore’s new bill would take effect July 1, 2026. mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

IN A PINCH

Florida stone crabs now show up in Virginia, thanks to climate change. Why can’t our elected leaders admit we need to do something about it?

Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Legislature don’t think climate change is something we Floridians should be worrying about. But I guess nobody told the stone crabs. Stone crabs — or rather, their tasty claws — have long been considered a South Florida seafood specialty. You see them served at places like the iconic Joe’s Stone Crab in Miami Beach. In fact, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says that Florida crabbers harvest 99% of all stone crab claws in

the U.S. And the prices they charge ensure the crabbers are anything but crabby.

But now stone crabs are showing up as far north as Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. Why? Because climate change has made conditions right for them to move.

“This is the first documented instance of stone crabs now being able to live inside of Chesapeake Bay,” marine biologist Romuald Lipcius told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel last week. “I believe, because of warming waters,

silence the science, nature is repeatedly showing us that the truth can’t be ignored. It just keeps poking its head up and saying,“Yo! I’m still here! What are you going to do about it?”

VIRGINIA IS FOR CRABS

If you’re not familiar with stone crabs, they got their name because, as the Fort Myers News Press once reported,“In the water, stone crabs look like stones, like muddy-gray river rocks indistinguishable from the rocks under which they burrow.”

Stone crabs’ powerful claws are so huge, they account for more than half of their total weight. They’re also specialized. One claw is for crushing, the other for tearing. To us humans, though, the meat from either one tastes delicious.

Crabbers carefully remove only one claw and toss the crab back so it can regrow the appendage. This is why stone crabs are considered a sustainable fishery. But it’s also a major reason why the claws cost so much — that, and the fact that the season for catching them lasts only from Oct. 15 to May 1.

In 1978, a Florida legislator tried to pass a law banning anyone from harvesting both claws. To show why this law was needed, he brought in a stone crab missing both claws and tossed it into a tank with a triggerfish.

The triggerfish, “over the gruesome course of an hour, attacked it, killed it and picked it clean,” the News Press noted. But the bill did not pass. Anglers know not to risk their livelihood by getting greedy and taking both claws.

Because I consider fresh seafood one of Florida’s greatest glories, I called up Lipcius to find out more about the Chesapeake stone crabs. Turns out, stone crab larvae have been repeatedly spotted in the Chesapeake for several years now. But they wouldn’t stick around long, he said.

that now, all of a sudden, stone crabs were able to survive, grow and live for a long time inside of Chesapeake Bay.”

This is the latest sign of how our fossil fuel addiction is drastically altering our world. But our state and federal political “leaders” owe so much to their oil industry campaign contributors, they don’t want to hear about the consequences.

Last year, the governor signed into law a bill that deleted the two C-words from most places where they occurred in state law. More recently, his “Department of Governmental Efficiency” has targeted local government programs focused on weaning people off fossil fuels in its search for “wasteful spending.”

Two years ago, our Ivy League-educated governor admitted that climate change is real. Yet now he seems far more concerned about the danger posed by rainbow crosswalks than the damage done by rapidly intensifying hurricanes or rising sea levels.

Meanwhile, the federal Department of Energy has released a report that insists any concern about our warming world is overblown. Eightyfive scientists condemned the report as “riddled with errors, misrepresentations and cherry-picked data to fit the president’s political agenda.”

While these people desperately attempt to

“They can’t survive temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit,” he explained. “In Chesapeake Bay, the water temperature used to routinely drop below that in the winter.”

That’s not happening anymore, he said. The water has warmed too much. The crabbers are catching stone crabs that have survived three or four Virginia winters, he told me.

“I believe the stone crabs are here to stay,” he said. Scientists are now searching for signs that they’ve even begun breeding in the Chesapeake. Because the crabbers finding them in their blue crab traps aren’t experienced at removing claws, he said, “for now we’re telling them, ‘Why don’t you toss them back?’”But soon, he predicted, local restaurants will start putting them on the menu.

Lipcius told me the stone crabs aren’t the only subtropical species to warm up to the warmer Chesapeake.

“We’ve never had a white shrimp fishery,” he said.“But now all of a sudden, they’re a common species here.”

He said one of the Chesapeake crabbers told him he’d caught three triggerfish. I guess it’s good that the stone crabs had both claws to fend off them off.

Virginia’s tourism slogan says that the state is for lovers. The way things are going, they may be able to add that it’s for lovers of Florida seafood.

FINDING A UNICORN

Lipcius called the Chesapeake stone crabs a rare instance of climate change creating a goodnews story. I suppose it’s good news for folks in Virginia to have easier access to a type of seafood once considered exclusive to Florida.

But I wondered if it’s good news for Florida, where we’ve seen repeated marine heat waves that left us all in hot water.

To find out, I turned to Ryan Gandy, science and restoration manager for the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program. Before that, he spent 15 years as the FWC’s top stone crab expert.

Sure enough, Gandy told me the increased warmth of the waters off our coast has been causing problems for our own stone crabs and the crabbers catching them.

“They’re a biological indicator that the system is warming up,” Gandy said, referring to the trend.

The FWC has tried to protect stone crabs during the spawning season. But the spawning season has been changing because of the change in water temperature.

“We’re seeing [the spawning] begin earlier and earlier in the year,” Gandy said. “We used to close the season on May 15. Now it closes on May 1.”

Stone crabs are tough crustaceans, he said. A marine heat wave won’t kill them the way it does other species. But higher temperatures may hurt their prey.

“They feed on a lot of clams and mollusks like snails,” he said. Those species may be injured or killed by toxic algae blooms that have been

known to accompany the heat waves, he told me.

Like Lipcius, Gandy also mentioned other species changing their habits and habitats because of climate change. The feisty snook, for instance.

“It used to be finding a snook in the Florida Panhandle was like finding a unicorn,” he said. “Now it’s not unusual to find them near Pensacola.”

SNAKES ALIVE

There are plenty of other signs that nature’s being disrupted by the greenhouse gases spewing from our cars, trucks, boats, jets and power plants.

As the world warms up, mangroves are sprouting in places they’ve never grown before. Our oceans have absorbed so much CO 2, they’re becoming more acidic. Sea turtles, whose sex is determined by the temperature of the beach

The snakes are slithering further and further north, showing up in West Palm Beach and Fort Myers. I keep waiting for one to claim a seat in the Florida Legislature, since that place tends to attract slimy characters.

Or look at what’s happening with green iguanas, which first wriggled their way into South Florida in 1965. Now the lizards that like to pop up in your toilet are showing up in Orange, Osceola and Polk counties, too.

Both altered their range because of the changes we’ve made to the atmosphere, Zierden told me.

“More and more species of wildlife and plant life move further north as we get warmer temperatures,” he said.

Other pests are benefiting from our warmer weather, too — whiteflies, for instance, which

Why, those Virginians are just a bunch of crab-nappers! We need to claw back those delicious claws!

where they’re hatched, are turning out entire generations that are all female because it’s too hot to produce males.

I called up Dave Zierden, Florida’s official state climatologist — yes, we really do have one! — to ask him about this. He named several more examples. Invasive species, for instance.

Take those Burmese pythons we keep sending hunters out in the Everglades to track down.

him, not us taxpayers.

“Climate change, for impacting the quality of your life, is not incredibly important,” Wright said last week, according to the New York Times. “In fact, if it wasn’t in the news, in the media, you wouldn’t know.”

I guess nobody told him about our rapidly intensifying hurricanes.

THEY DON’T CARE

Just this week, DeSantis’ newly appointed lieutenant governor, Jay Collins, was bragging about what a great job he and his boss were doing.

“Aren’t you glad to live in a state that values its people, that fights for the things that matter, and prioritizes the things that make a difference at your kitchen table, at your dinner table and for your family?” he said, according to Politico.

But they’re NOT doing that.

In fact, Collins was the Senate sponsor of the bill deleting most mentions of climate change from state law, a bill that DeSantis signed.

Every time DeSantis, Collins and the rest turn their heads away from the dangers posed by climate change, they’re showing that they do not value Floridians and their lives at all.

They aren’t doing anything about our rising sea levels or the changes in our weather patterns, other than pretending it doesn’t exist. The insurance companies know that this is what’s driving our multiple disasters, but you won’t hear a peep about it out of our “leaders.”

They’ll eagerly tackle kooky stuff like “chemtrails” and “ending vaccine mandates.” But they’re hostile to anything backed up by actual science. Sometimes I think we should refer to the governor as “Denial-Santis.” He’d rather scoff than do anything constructive.

I have been pondering how we could turn the steering wheel on this demolition derby car away from the crash we can see coming. The solution may lie with the stone crabs.

I think we need to flood the governor’s mailbox with letters, emails and phone calls complaining about how Virginia is stealing our native seafood. Why, those Virginians are just a bunch of crab-nappers! We need to claw back those delicious claws!

This will engage our governor’s overly developed sense of grievance. I’m sure he’ll immediately declare a state of emergency and order the stone crabs returned.

To get the crabs to stick around, we need to convince him to make sure they’re comfortable here — no more marine heat waves, plenty of prey and so forth.

attack Florida’s ornamental plant industry. Mosquitoes, which spread diseases such as dengue fever, are thriving thanks to the increased rain, longer summers, and milder winters.

Meanwhile, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright called concerns about climate change “silly.” Wright, the former CEO of a natural gas fracking company, is busy this week plugging gas and oil in Europe as if that’s who still employs

Unless someone else volunteers, I can be the one to tell him this. But I want a guarantee that I can get stone crab claws for free for the rest of my life. If you have to deal with a crabby politician, you should get rewarded with the claws.

WE THE PEOPLE

Orlando visual artist Gisela Romero

showcases community faces in new exhibition

In the five years since immigrating to the United States from Venezuela with her husband, Orlando-based visual artist Gisela Romero’s works have centered around her newfound community.

Her latest exhibition, WE, will be featured at the Orange County Administration Center as part of the Art in the Chambers exhibition program, opening this week.

Romero was provided studio space in downtown Orlando in 2024 by the United Art Center of Florida. With a large window in her studio overlooking Orange Avenue, Romero had a front-row seat to the faces that make up one of the busiest spots in town.

“I was looking at people because I would be there from early morning, and I started to see many diverse people. I mean, it’s amazing how

Orlando is a palace where so many different people live, from homeless to CEOs to tourists, people who get lost looking for City Hall for their appointment,” Romero tells Orlando Weekly

Her daily routine of people-watching was briefly interrupted when a man approached her through the window.

“One day, this guy came and told me he was a homeless person,” says Romero. “He asked me, ‘Why don’t you make a drawing of me?’ And this is when I started making sketches of people that I was seeing from the window. When I received an invitation from the Chamber with an offer for a solo show, I thought that it was a perfect opportunity to develop this project.”

WE is a collection of Romero’s works that draws connections between images of individuals and

words. The exhibition is an invitation for people to see or read stories that are close to them.

“I think if I did what I really wanted to do with it, people will feel connected with the exhibition. I hope they can stop and think about the importance of community and the importance of talking and listening to each other,” Romero says.

Two of Romero’s main avenues of expression are drawing and communicating through mixed media. Her last solo exhibition, A Constant Goodbye — The Table Runner’s Stories of Gisela Romero, explored her interest in immigration and the consequences of uprooting families using table runners as a canvas. While her works are always illustration-based, Romero often incorporates threads, ribbons and acrylics.

Born in Caracas, Venezuela’s capital, Romero originally attended a graphic design institution due to the city’s lack of schooling for the visual arts. She later received a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from California College of Arts and a master’s in Fine Arts from Pratt Institute, working as an illustrator in between.

“I’m very happy to have the opportunity to have my exhibition in a space that welcomes community, unlike my home country, where public institutions don’t allow people to be there, debate

or talk to each other,” says Romero.

From the perspective of her lived experience, Romero believes that it is vital to the community that all individuals play their part in supporting it, and not just those in positions of power.

“To have this place to be able to go and talk to community leaders and tell them how you feel or what you need is a luxury. Some places don’t even have this luxury, and you can’t take that for granted,” Romero says.

WE runs through Jan. 27, 2026. And as this issue was going to press, the Orlando Museum of Art announced that Romero will have a sculpture piece exhibited in the museum for Hispanic Heritage Month. We recommend you check both of these exhibitions off your aesthetic to-do list. arts@orlandoweekly.com

SAFE HAVEN

Burger Vault in Altamonte Springs is worth breaking into

Ihad a bit of fun trying to come up with slogans for Burger Vault in Altamonte Springs, the subject of this week’s review. From the obvious “Burger Vault: We Lock In the Flavor” to more oblique zingers like “Burger Vault: It’s Empty (pregnant pause) Calories,” the taglines I spurted were met with an unimpressed grimace from my wife.“OK, OK, what about ‘Burger Vault: A Springboard to Heart Disease’?”

Nothing.

And while the latter may very well be true, Burger Vault is also a springboard to a relatively new burger trend — the all-halal variant. Yes, it seems halal burger joints have ground their way into a share of the better burger market across the city, whether it’s stalwarts like Charcoal Zyka and their chapli kebab burger, or the all-American classics being flipped at O’Town Burgers N Wings and Beef N’ Buns, or the smashed patties at Smashville and Juicy Burger & Wings — to name just a few.

’Cuz there are a lot.

But in addition to serving burgers fashioned

from meat slaughtered according to Islamic jurisprudence (that is, by hand), Burger Vault adds a well-guarded seasoning by way of Jordan to all their patties. Like, really well-guarded. And not anything as obvious as, say, a baharat or za’atar, but a lot more subtle. Sumac for sure. I may have detected some cumin notes. Of note, as far as olfactory notes go, was the superbly aromatic char being fired onto these patties. In fact, we sniffed out the burger joint, literally, by following the flame-broiled scent from the light at State Road 436 and Montgomery Road straight to the source inside the Ashby’s Square strip mall. That source, a fire-licked grate manned by a burger maestro with a penchant for pyrotechnics, is the draw. The flare-ups he theatrically induces, often to the delight of those in line, has purpose — a crusty char on both sides of the 5.3-ounce allbeef patty. Or, in the case of the volcano burger ($17; $21 with fries and a drink), two 5.3-ounce all-beef patties.

with melted cheddar and a not-so-fiery “volcano” sauce given a kick by some charred jalapeños. It’s superb, substantial and anything but smashed. In fact, when I brought up the topic of smashburgers to one of the guys behind the counter, he responded, “Those are not burgers.”

Clearly, the boys take their work seriously. Every patty served in every burger we’ve tried has been subjected to the dark arts. An order of the simple, basic “classic” burger ($13 single; $17 double) had my Cali-born-and-bred bud likening it to In-N-Out’s (BV’s brioche bun notwithstanding). No argument from me.

No psilocybin in the “mushroom magic” ($15), but the greenish fungi sauce and yellow melt of American cheese gave off some psychedelic vibes. We were turned onto the “Build Your Own Fries” option ($5) and it was pretty far out, man. Well, it was the way we ordered it — with cheese sauce ($1.79), caramelized onions (99 cents), jalapeños (no extra charge) and bacon ($2) of the beef variety (this is a halal joint, after all). Yeah, washing it all down with some electric Kool-Aid would’ve been totally groovy, but a vanilla shake ($7) helped mellow out the burn.

The space itself, with its brick walls and leather booths, is marred only by the harsh interrogation-room lighting — take heed; there will be squinting. Also odd is that should you want your burger cut in half, a server must be summoned, after which one will come by with a sizable steak knife to dissect it. Table knives were nowhere to be found.

I wasn’t all too fond of the Sydney crispy chicken burger ($14): unmelted slices of cheddar in between a not-so-crispy chicken breast and turkey patty with lettuce, tomato, pickles and a honey-mustardish “Sydney” sauce. I don’t know about the chicken sammies being served down under, but BV ought to look a little closer to home for chicken sandwich inspiration (i.e., Nashville).

Speaking of Australia, BV initially offered an 8-ounce Australian wagyu burger on a Martin’s potato roll ($30), but then switched to American wagyu. Not sure I can justify paying that amount for American wagyu. Bad As’s Burgers offers Aussie wag burgers at almost half the price.

Indeed, the city is chock-full of burger options — great options — and Burger Vault has immersed itself in a very crowded field, but you’d do well to give them a try. “Burger Vault: We’ve Got the Right Combination.”

She didn’t even crack a smile at that one. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

THEY’RE SO UNUSUAL

New music series Odd Harmonic spotlights the

hidden connections between disparate zones of underground sound

or this particular event, I wanted to keep things a bit more eclectic and not hyperfocus on one genre of music. All artists that are playing are approaching their music with a sense of exploration and not trying to ‘game a genre.’ … The vibe of Odd Harmonic should be expansion even at the cost of some risk.”

The last time Orlando Weekly spoke to Derek Morton (Berz3rkr, Salty Jazz Crabs, Circuit

Church collective), it was about the inaugural ODrone drone-music festival in 2024 and his co-curatorial work on it. Now in the latter half of our cursed year 2025, ODrone is firmly in its terrible twos and Circuit Church is practically a local institution (even boasting a new offshoot, Uncontrolled Voltage), so it must be time for another show series.

So it is that this week, Morton debuts the mad scientist-style genre-clash Odd Harmonic.

Headquartered at Will’s Pub, the series will spotlight all flavors of the area’s avant-underground, mixed and matched for maximum pleasing confusion. Morton envisions it as a “gateway to the avant-garde” for curious attendees, to “showcase Orlando’s experimental community but also bring artists from out of town to share their work here.”

The lineup certainly fits the bill, featuring the electronic dreamscapes of Drujhn, the spy-versus-spy noise of Salty Jazz Crabs, Derek Dunn’s always serene electronic loops (or maybe guitar ambience, or perhaps even pedal steel — he ain’t saying) and jazz maestro Thomas Milovac’s improv-rock juggernaut Moon Rays all on one stage.

We feel duty-bound to point out that this freewheeling style of curating experimental music shows is not really a new phenomenon locally, with folks like Jonas Van den Bossche, the aforementioned Milovac, Dylan Houser, Will Bess and Dan Reaves doing it as much out of a sense of perverse adventurism as maximal noise show necessity. But Morton brings to the table his own lifetime of experience within alternative circles — “organizing shows, music series and various festivals in the D.C. area in the mid-’90s” — and

ODD HARMONIC 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24 Will’s Pub 1042 N. Mills Ave. willspub.org $10-$15

an ambitious enthusiasm to present “experimental music of all genres” from all around the country. He spitballs bringing names like FireToolz, Alessandro Cortini and Peter Evans to the area and maybe even collaborating with scene touchtones the Civic Minded 5 on a show or two down the line.

For shows like this, where it’s less a matter of putting together a lineup to match with a touring band to serve as local draw, there can be a sense of play in putting together musicians and finding hidden connective tissue between wildly different outsider sounds. For Morton, saxophonist and New York City underground fixture John Zorn is a curatorial inspiration.

“I was lucky enough to benefit from his support when I was living in NYC from 20052015. Not only did he release my Brown Wing Overdrive band on Tzadik, but his tireless and workaholic dedication to releasing all kinds of music on Tzadik and running the Stone proved to me that it can be done,” says Morton. “I love how all of his projects have a Zorn feel but can casually spend multiple genres. He networks with people he respects despite if they neatly fit into one genre.”

Morton will be both playing and running the show, always a challenge for even the most starry-eyed of promoters, playing as part of the tandem Salty Jazz Crabs with Stephen Connolly of Pothole Skinny. He says he’s ready for the double duty.

“In the past, there were some scenarios where I had to run the sound, collect door, perform, play stage manager and pay out artists at the end of the night or make up the difference out of my pocket if there were guarantees. Now that was stressful. It’s great to play a club where there is a staff to do most of the duties so these shows are relatively easy for me,” says Morton of running the show at Will’s. “My day job requires me to juggle a lot as I am a technical project manager in technology. There is always something going wrong and often the project manager is tasked with overseeing the solution. Running shows definitely presents their own unique challenges but the journey is extremely rewarding.”

If he makes it through Wednesday, Morton already has the future arc of Odd Harmonic mapped out.

“My immediate plan is to work on three shows a year including a larger festival or a special presentation at a unique venue,” says Morton. “One of my goals is to bring more experimental music and avant jazz to the Orlando and Central Florida area.”

LOCAL RELEASES

Seeing Preston Hardwick on stage laying down the rock hard and heavy with noted Orlando bands like Weak and Audible Parts will give you certain ideas about where his artistic passions lie. But on his own, he actually drops beats. And it’s more than just a casual diversion. When it comes to electronic dance music, he’s a disciple driven by a thirst to not just know the classic forms but to create them himself.

As a teenager, Hardwick immersed himself in the EDM world first as an internet bookworm. “I was discovering the vast subgenre landscape with a newish tool on the internet, Wikipedia,” he says. “As funny as this sounds, I would comb through subgenres of music reading about them, and then going and illegally downloading them from some virus-infested P2P software onto my family computer.”

Those seeds would ultimately spawn a remarkably versatile practitioner of pre-millennial dance idioms, an EDM nomad with a crate-digger’s range. Over the years, Hardwick’s releases have traversed breaks, house and IDM. Now, though, he’s just dropped two new EPs in short order that further widen his scope.

On one end, there’s Now That’s What I Call Ambient, a collection that’s exactly as advertised.

Smokeshop, a nostalgic hardcore trek that delivers altered states at breakneck BPMs. From the manic psychosis of “Bogo Vape” to the dubby jungle of “Push to Start Ziploc Bag” to the cerebral breakbeat of “3X Boner Pills” and “Chinese Glass,” it’s a tight crash course on drum & bass. “Yeah, jungle, breakcore, and early ‘intelligent dnb’ has been on my daily playlists since I was a teenager,” says Hardwick.

Now That’s What I Call Ambient and DJ Smokeshop are back-to-back testimonials of Preston Hardwick’s ability and studiousness as an electronic dance artist. Both EPs now stream everywhere.

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

Saucers Over Washington, The Pinko Beats, Dismera, Physalia: The “Youth to the Front” concert series has been Orlando Girls Rock Camp’s latest and greatest campaign to provide special, early and safe access to our city’s live music scene for local youth. This latest edition features outstanding neo-shoegaze pacesetters Saucers Over Washington, political alt-rockers

The Pinko Beats, young pop rockers Dismera and brand-new OGRC shoegaze product Physalia. It’ll be a great showcase of both the now and the next in Orlando music. As always, the concert will be an afternoon matinee open to all ages. (2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, Will’s Pub, $10-$20)

Audible Parts’ Preston Hardwick on his own is a remarkably versatile practitioner of pre-millennial dance idioms. Over the years, Hardwick’s releases have traversed breaks, house and IDM. He’s just dropped two new EPs in short order that further widen his scope

The six-pack of vaporous ambient drones is, as Hardwick puts it,“a love letter written to Frutiger Aero and Paulstretch.”

On the other, much more banging tip is DJ

Teen Suicide, Please Be Kind, Sunday Morning Revival: Teen Suicide are already well-known as the breakout Baltimore band formed by noted indie artist Sam Ray. Somewhat less known is that they’re now Orlando-based. Between their national touring schedule and their drummer living out of state, the shapeshifting indie rockers don’t actually play here that often. That of course makes this hometown show automatically notable. Making it even more imperative is that Teen Suicide will come packing some good fresh songs, their first new material in several years. Opening will be Orlando’s Please Be Kind and Sunday Morning Revival. (7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, Will’s Pub, $25)

Molly Tuttle, Joshua Ray Walker: Rock hogs the spotlight when it comes to guitar heroes for obvious reasons. But Americana has its greats, too. And without question, Molly Tuttle is a young god with dazzling bluegrass virtuosity that could, yes, hang with even the best techdeath and neoclassical metal axmen out there. Unlike those wankers, however, her music is much more than technical self-indulgence. She’s been knocking everyone out in recent years with an award-winning blend of modern folk, indie taste and pop flair. What’s more, Tuttle will be showing off her new all-female, post-Golden Highway band. Oh, that sound? It’s the glass ceiling cracking. Opening will be talented and true Dallas artist Joshua Ray Walker, whose music is pure country gold. (7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, Plaza Live, $44.69-$73.98) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com

This month’s featured farmer is Jenna Foor of MidMod Urban Farm in Winter Park. Le Cordon Bleu grad Megan Amnott will be moderating the event. MidMod Urban Farm knows their way around a

baked good, perfect for the (theoretical) beginning of fall. 6 p.m., Kitchen House, 26 E. King St., thekitchenhouse.org, free. — Matthew Moyer

Franz Ferdinand

Franz Ferdinand brings the post-punk revival (back) to Orlando for a night of angular shapes and irresistible hooks. The Scottish band broke through in 2004 with the single “Take Me Out,” a track that launched them to international acclaim and cemented their place as alternative rock legends. Their most recent album, The Human Fear,

finds the band sharpening their lyrical edge and expanding their sonic palette, while sticking with their vintage shimmy. Fans can expect a setlist blending early favorites with new tracks, and support from special guest Master Peace. What’s old is new again, and again and again. 7 p.m., House of Blues, Disney Springs, Lake Buena Vista, orlando.houseofblues.com, $50. — Emmy Bailey

WWE Friday Night SmackDown

There is no denying that WWE is the peak of the

pro-wrestling world. A mega-money deal with Netflix and ESPN, sell-out shows around the country, a crop of legit superstars — in particular Cody Rhodes, Drew McIntire, Jacob Fatu, Chelsea Green and Charlotte Flair on the SmackDown brand, heading our way — all of it points to a very well-oiled machine. Even something that once would have been very divisive, the announcement of an upcoming Wrestlemania happening in Saudi Arabia, only caused a minor hubbub. WWE has deep ties locally, too. Its developmental league NXT is based here, filming now at Full Sail, as well as a “Performance Center” training facility that will soon be replaced by a bigger, more extensive one (also here). The wrestlers of the Friday Night SmackDown brand, currently airing on the USA Network, will be at the Kia Center for a live television taping and clearly, this is a fed that knows how to put on a show. 7:30 p.m., Kia Center, 400 W. Church St., kiacenter.com, $72$392. — MM

JJ Grey & Mofro

Touting their first new album in nearly a decade, Olustee, JJ Grey & Mofro are hitting the road. The band’s next stop? House of Blues, alongside supporting act and local Americana power couple Harber Wynn. For those unfamiliar with JJ Grey, this Jacksonville-based artist creates music summoning up his own experiences living in the swamplands of North Florida. The band’s raucous blend of soul, funk, gospel, folk and rock has netted them a wide audience over the past 20 years on the road. Says Grey of his process: “The best songs I’ve ever written, I never wrote. They wrote themselves. The best show I ever played, played itself and had little to do with me or talent. To me, those things come from the power of an honest moment, and I guess I’m trying to live in that power and not force life to cough up what I want.” Get ready for more than a few honest moments Friday. 6:30 p.m., House of Blues, Disney

Red Bull Tandem Rollercoaster

Altamonte Springs is about to get some particularly unhinged international bragging rights when the (checks notes) Tandem Rollercoaster makes its U.S. debut at Cranes Roost Park. Brought to you by — who else? — Red Bull, the Tandem Rollercoaster is essentially a narrow elevated track littered with obstacles and traps; 30 participating local teams will do their best to make it through in homemade soapbox derby-style tandem bicycles. Mayhem will ensue! The Tandem Rollercoaster is in Altamonte for one day only, so make your arrangements. 11 a.m., Cranes Roost Park, 274 Cranes Roost Blvd., Altamonte Springs, redbull.com, free. — MM

Mills 50 Fall Fest

Lauded by National Geographic as a contender for “the most interesting neighborhood in Florida,” our ever-growing Mills 50 is throwing a Fall Festival, replacing falling leaves and pumpkin spice with local wares, artistry, and eats and drinks. This free, family- and dog-friendly event, centered around House on Lang and Gold Dust Home, invites the community to shop from local vendors, experience live music from local bands like Bithlo Possum Revival and Brian + Hannah, and feast from pop-ups like the Pizza Slut and SwedeDish Food Truck. Drinks from neighborhood destinations like Ten10 Brewing and Guesthouse are most definitely included. As this area continues to gain notoriety, draw in new crowds and (gasp!) gentrify, soak up this iteration of Mills 50 while you can. 1 p.m., The House on Lang, 1308 Lang Ave., mills50.org, free. — AC

Meet Rooster!

Rooster (A578935) is a 2-yearold stray that came to us a little over a month ago. He is big and handsome — 75 pounds of pure muscle. At first glance, his eyes, his intensity and the way he carries himself would stop anyone in their tracks. But we’ve discovered that hidden beneath that gruff exterior is a sweet and needy heart.

Rooster is intelligent, gentle and very affectionate. He will steal kisses, and has knocked us over trying to get on our laps. His size and strength can be intimidating, but Rooster seems to understand this. He gets along with other dogs without bullying them. The first time meeting Rooster, he will come across as aloof and disinterested. But really he is watching and making up his own mind.

Rooster isn’t going to just accept a treat or a pet on the head. Rooster sees with his heart.
