Orlando started the search for its next Poet Laureate

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer last week launched the city’s search for its next Poet Laureate, to replace outgoing Poet Laureate Shawn Welcome. Welcome, a professor at Valencia College, was appointed in 2021 as the city’s second Poet Laureate. In partnership with United Arts of Central Florida, the city will appoint a third Poet Laureate, responsible for promoting poetry and inspiring future poets, artists and literary lovers. The selected candidate will play a role in Orlando’s cultural landscape and will present original poetry at local events, community gatherings and youth-centered spaces. The new Poet Laureate will be announced in October, helping to mark National Arts and Humanities Month. Candidates will be evaluated based on artistic merit, quality of literary work samples, experience and background. The Poet Laureate Search Committee — a group of poets and literary figures representing UCF, Rollins College, Valencia College, Seminole State College and Burrow Press — expects candidates to “demonstrate a record of achievement in the art of poetry, including significant publications and recognition or awards.” Applicants are required to be residents of Central Florida and at least 21 years old. The committee’s deliberations will kick off in July.

Lockheed Martin workers in Orlando and Denver went on strike

State lawmakers concluded session, will return to Tallahassee for budget deal

Hundreds of machinists, mechanics, electricians and other skilled employees of defense manufacturer Lockheed Martin in Orlando and Denver walked off the job last week, on strike over alleged unfair labor practices and the failure of their employer and their union to reach an agreement as they negotiate a union contract. There are nearly 500 Lockheed Martin employees in Orlando alone represented by the United Auto Workers, which has been in contract negotiations with their employer for months. According to the union, while Lockheed Martin has offered “meaningful” pay raises for union members over the course of contract talks, other demands have been unmet. This includes a cost-of-living adjustment, quicker progression to top pay, a minimum starting wage of $15, making Veterans Day a paid holiday, and improvements to workers’ 401(k) and pension plans. It’s an open-ended strike, meaning there’s no conclusive day when they will return to work. That depends on whether an agreement can be reached. Lockheed has government contracts worth billions and posted a net profit of $1.7 billion within the first quarter of fiscal year 2025 alone.

In interviews with the Florida Phoenix, representatives of Planned Parenthood stressed that its clinics are still providing people with access to health care services that run the gamut from STD testing and treatment to cancer screenings. “We’re still here. We’re still going to be here. Planned Parenthood has always been around. I cannot imagine it not being around,” said Dr. Cherise Felix, chief medical officer of Planned Parenthood of South, East and North Florida. A proposed constitutional amendment to allow abortions up to the point of viability was approved by a majority of voters last November, but didn’t receive the necessary 60 percent approval to pass.

Florida bill to protect state parks passed and headed to DeSantis for signature

A measure that would prevent development in state parks was passed unanimously by the Florida House and Senate last week and went to Gov. DeSantis for his signature. The State Park Preservation Act (HB 209) was filed last year by Southeast Florida Republican Sen. Gayle Harrell, following a statewide public backlash — across party lines — to the Department of Environmental Protection’s “Great Outdoor Initiative.” That plan called for building lodges, golf courses, pickleball courts and disc golf courses in nine state parks. The bill requires the state DEP to report to the governor and Legislature regarding the status and operation of state parks. Additionally, the bill revises notice requirements for public meetings. “This is democracy at work,” Harrell said before the Senate passed the measure.

Florida House and Senate leaders said late last Friday they had reached agreement on a “framework” for a budget deal that would include $2.8 billion in tax cuts, but lawmakers were expected to return to the Capitol during the week of May 12 to negotiate the details. House Speaker Daniel Perez, R-Miami, and Senate President Ben Albritton, R-Wauchula, made the announcement on the final scheduled night of a contentious 60-day legislative session. Lawmakers had to approve an extension of the session because they did not finish the budget. Perez said the budget for the 2025-2026 fiscal year, which will start July 1, will total less than Gov. Ron DeSantis’ proposed $115.6 billion spending plan, though he did not give an exact amount. He also said the tax-cut package will include his priority of reducing the state’s 6 percent sales tax rate. During the extended session, lawmakers will consider only the budget and budget-related bills. That means a wide range of other bills died Friday night after not passing during the initial 60-day session. The House adjourned at 10:23 p.m., with the Senate following nine minutes later. Lawmakers must pass a budget before the start of the fiscal year.

Anniversary of Florida’s six-week abortion ban found abortion advocates and doctors still at work

A year into Florida’s ban on most abortions after six weeks’ gestation, the network of groups and doctors providing access to pregnancy terminations hasn’t vanished. Still, the six-week ban led to a sharp decline in the number of abortions. By the state’s count, there were 19,198 fewer abortions in 2024 than in 2023. The Guttmacher Institute, a reproductive health policy and research organization that tracks medication abortions from pills shipped through the mail, placed the decrease in abortions at 12,100. Florida’s current law bans abortions after six weeks’ gestation, before many people even know they’re pregnant. The law allows exceptions for people who get pregnant as a result of rape, incest or human trafficking; they can obtain abortions up to 15 weeks, but they must show a restraining order, police report, medical record or court document showing that a crime is orlandoweekly.com ● MAY 7-13, 2025 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY

[ news + views ] accountability, public schools are left scraping for resources — and now are losing some of their most dedicated teachers in the process.” Extra federal funding for public schools allocated during the COVID-19 pandemic is drying up, leaving schools across the U.S. on the edge of a “fiscal cliff,” according to CNBC. The OCPS spokesperson clarified in a follow-up email to Orlando Weekly that dips in enrollment are just a part of why a teacher’s contract with the school district might not be renewed. Nearly half of the teachers this year who didn’t see their contract renewed this year, for instance, were on temporary contracts covering for a long-term leave of another employee or maternity leave. But the fact that most teachers are on these annual contracts at all is due to Florida law.

ore than 800 teachers employed by Orange County Public Schools have received letters from the school district informing them they will not return to their classrooms for the next school year, the district confirmed to Orlando Weekly, due at least in part to a decline in student enrollment. A spokesperson shared, for comparison, that ahead of the 2024 school year, 960 teachers had similarly received letters informing them their jobs were being cut. The Orange County Classroom Teachers Association, the local teachers union, blasted the cuts on social media. “We are now seeing the devastating results of Florida’s deliberate scheme to defund public education,” shared union president Clinton McCracken in a social media post published Monday. “Last week, many teachers across our district were non-reappointed, and it appears to be due to projected under-enrollment in our public schools — a direct consequence of the state’s

reckless expansion of school vouchers.” Florida’s school voucher system, touted as “school choice,” awards taxpayer funds to parents who want to home-school their child or send their child to a private school, instead of a public, tuition-free school. Since the passage of reforms to Florida’s school voucher system in 2023, including the removal of voucher income limits, voucher use has spiked 67 percent, the Orlando Sentinel reported earlier this year, with students from wealthy families making up roughly one-quarter of voucher recipients. The change has allowed parents to draw millions of dollars from taxpayer funds. “Public education is one of the last true promises of opportunity and equality in this country — and it’s being systematically dismantled,” said McCracken, an openly gay union leader and former art teacher who has also spoken against the adoption of anti-LGBTQ policies in schools. “While private schools using voucher dollars discriminate, hire unqualified staff, raise tuition at will, and operate without real public

Under Florida law, public educators are generally employed on annual, year-to-year contracts with school districts. Each year, educators are informed by the district whether their job is being cut. This has been the norm for Florida teachers since 2011, when then-Gov. Rick Scott signed a law, dubbed the Student Success Act, eliminating multi-year renewable contracts. “Our hope is to find positions for all our teachers within OCPS,” Scott Howat, director of communications for OCPS, told Orlando Weekly in a statement. District staff, he added, will be holding virtual transfer fairs to “provide an avenue” for teachers to find another position for the next school year. “We welcome assistance from all stakeholders to get the word out to our employees.” Orange County Public Schools is the eighth-largest school district in the United States, with 210 schools and more than 200,000 students, according to the OCPS website. Staffing in schools is based on the school district’s budget, according to OCPS, which is itself dependent on student enrollment. According to a recent memo sent to OCPS employees, the district’s schools are projected to lose 3,130 students for the 2025-26 school year. This is expected to result in a $27.8 million decrease in funding. A new annual report from the National Education Association, the largest labor union in the U.S., shows that Florida ranks 39th nationwide in per-student spending, allocating $13,584 per student, as of the last school year. Florida also ranks near dead-last in average teacher pay, ranking 50th out of all 50 states plus the District of Columbia. (No. 51, Mississippi, has the nation’s lowest average pay rate for teachers.) “Florida’s lawmakers say they want to lead in public education, but you can’t lead from 50th place,” said Andrew Spar, president of NEA’s state affiliate, the Florida Education Association. “The Governor’s original budget proposal keeps public schools at the bottom of the priority list by keeping per student spending flat, failing to deliver meaningful raises for teachers, and significantly decreasing funding for special needs

students,” Spar continued. “The House and Senate proposed budgets follow suit, proposing deep cuts to college and career readiness programs that are critical to Florida’s future workforce and minimal increases to teacher salaries.” Gov. Ron DeSantis’ budget proposal, released earlier this year, would increase per-student spending by $222 for the next school year, the Florida Phoenix reported. Still, proposals from the Florida House and Senate, in contrast, look to allocate less. Adjusting for inflation, the FEA said in a recent statement that per-student spending even under DeSantis’ proposal would still be hundreds of dollars less than it was just a few years ago. The union called on DeSantis’ office to increase per-student spending in his budget by $1,000 per student. “Decades of bad policy have caused Florida’s students to have to deal with continued teacher and staff shortages, declining SAT scores and falling NAEP scores,” the FEA said in a statement. “Meanwhile, while inflation rises, teachers in Florida are ranked No. 50 in the nation for average teacher salary, and education staff professionals often cannot afford to live where they work.” Florida teachers’ unions have for years pointed out ongoing teacher shortages in schools, with educators also speaking out about large class sizes, student behavioral problems, and efforts by the state to censor what they can discuss and teach in classrooms.

Luring students back to the classroom

The Orange County school board last week voted in favor of hiring a consultant to lure students back into the public school system, according to an OCPS news release. The plan is to pay consultants, employed through a third-party organization, nearly $1,000 for every student they recruit. Under the agreement reached with Caissa Public Strategy LLC, a Tennessee-based public relations firm, OCPS will receive approximately $8,950 in state funding for each student who re-enrolls and attends a district-operated school for at least 30 days. The firm will be paid $935 per student who returns and meets that 30-day attendance threshold. OCPS pointed out this would result in a net gain of $8,015 per student for the district. “This initiative provides a new avenue for OCPS to promote its schools and highlight the strong educational opportunities available to students and families who live in Orange County and are not enrolled in OCPS,” Dr. Maria Vazquez, the county’s school superintendent, said in a statement. If 1,000 students are re-enrolled, OCPS would receive about $8 million in net revenue, with Caissa Public Strategy receiving $935,000 from OCPS in compensation. lorida’s new Halo Law, the controversial statute intended to protect law enforcement from harassment, went into effect at the start of this year. Now the first people arrested and prosecuted under it say they were left in the dark. At least 11 people so far have been arrested on charges of violating the new law, which bans people from being within 25 feet of a police officer, firefighter or paramedic at the scene of an incident, according to a statewide survey of the latest criminal violations by Fresh Take Florida, a news service of the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications. Those accused can face a misdemeanor charge if they stay after a verbal warning to get back. It outlaws behavior described as “conduct directed at a first responder which intentionally causes substantial emotional distress in that first responder and serves no legitimate purpose.” Back when lawmakers were debating the bill’s passage, then-Sen. Bobby Powell, D-West Palm Beach, cited the citizen’s recording of the police officer who killed George Floyd in

Minneapolis in 2020 and asked the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Bryan Avila, R-Hialeah Gardens, whether a bystander recording a scene after being told to stop could be arrested. Avila acknowledged that a first responder’s emotional distress level — the threshold for an arrest — could be subjective. “They are certainly trying to perform their duties and save a life, as well as stabilize a situation,” Avila said. “Anything that certainly impedes upon that is harassment.” The law went into effect Jan. 1 and initially saw split support: Detractors said the law would restrict free speech and protests, while supporters said it was necessary to protect law enforcement and other first responders. The law includes no specific protections for anyone recording or merely quietly watching police or firefighters within 25 feet.

‘Why is my husband on the ground?’

Those arrested say the law needs to be changed already.

The Bay County Sheriff’s Office arrested Katelynn Justice, 29, on a misdemeanor violation of the Halo Law at 1 a.m. on Jan. 1 — one hour after it went into effect. Justice and her husband were at Ms. Newby’s, a bar in Panama City Beach, with friends for New Year’s Eve. While using the bathroom, deputies arrested her husband over a fight with the bar’s security. When she came out, she saw a deputy place his knee on his neck, pinning Justice’s husband down. “Can someone please tell me what’s going on? Why is my husband on the ground?” she said she asked the deputies. Sheriff’s deputies told her to step aside before later putting her in handcuffs. Justice asked deputies why she was arrested multiple times — including while in the police car — but was told nothing, she said. Prosecutors dropped her charges on Feb. 10, according to court documents. Justice said the arrest was traumatic: She wasn’t aware of the new law, felt she acted reasonably, and she worried she would be fired from her medical practice for being arrested. “Anybody that’s married would be a little concerned and right there by their husband,”she said. Justice did not remember law enforcement telling her to stay 25 feet away from them, she said. A deputy wrote in the arrest report she was told to “back up”and described her as “hovering” near the scene of her husband being arrested. Elsewhere in the Panhandle, Kaleb Matthew Freeze, 19, said he was frustrated by the police’s lack of transparency. After a fight broke out Jan. 25 at a friend’s house, Freeze said someone punched his girlfriend. He said he asked Santa Rosa County sheriff’s deputies what happened but was waved off.

Freeze said deputies arrested him without saying anything. “Immediately, I’m the first person they arrest,” Freeze said. In his arrest report, a deputy said Freeze ignored “multiple verbal orders”to step back and “continued to yell and scream, throwing his arms in the air, all while remaining within 5 to 10 feet of deputies who were trying to conduct interviews.” Freeze faces a court hearing June 27 in the case. Prosecutors formally charged him with resisting an officer without violence. In Gainesville, police said Adri Nicole Day, 46, interrupted officers investigating a noise complaint and refused to leave, saying, “I ain’t going nowhere, I know my rights,” according to her arrest report. Police arrested her under the new state law after an officer said he warned her to stand 25 feet back. Prosecutors dropped the charge in a plea deal in which Day, who police said is homeless, pleaded no contest to resisting an officer without violence and possession of a small amount of drugs in her purse. A judge sentenced her to four months in jail earlier this month. In Dania Beach, a Broward County sheriff’s deputy said Angel Morales, 35, of Fort Lauderdale approached authorities during a traffic stop in February and shouted at them. The deputy said he warned Morales to stay back 25 feet, and Morales said, “Do you want to get hurt?” A magistrate convicted Morales five days later of resisting an officer without violence and breaking the new Halo Law, and sentenced him to 10 days in jail. In practice, the Halo Law lets police get rid of witnesses temporarily and lets them take witnesses’ phones as evidence if they violate it, said Matt Landsman, a Gainesville-based defense attorney. Landsman has not directly worked on a case relating to the Halo Law or its violations. “It’s doing exactly what I suspected it was for, which is to stop people from monitoring the police, not for safety,” he said. The Santa Rosa County sheriff’s top lawyer, Jennifer Rogers, said in a statement that deputies aren’t required to notify anyone of the 25-foot rule before arresting them. She called it a good practice but not mandatory. The law, which Gov. Ron DeSantis signed in April 2024, allows someone to be arrested “after receiving a verbal warning.” Barney Bishop, a representative for Florida Smart Justice Alliance, a lobbying group that advocates for public safety, said the law came from repeated problems with activist citizens he described as anti-law enforcement, and has been effective so far. “There’s no reason with magnification on your cell phones that you need to be closer than 25 feet to see or hear what is going on,” he said. “The idea that this inhibits First Amendment speech is hogwash. A head-to-head comparison of two titanic new cruise ships, MSC Cruises’ World America and Norwegian Cruise Line’s Aqua The imminent grand opening of

Epic Universe may be the talk of the town, but it isn’t the only titanic debut making waves this summer in Florida’s tourism industry. MSC Cruises (the family-owned subsidiary of the Italian cargo conglomerate) and Norwegian Cruise Line (an American-owned brand with Nordic flair) each recently christened their latest and greatest cruise ships with celebrity-studded events, and I was invited on back-to-back media sailings aboard both the MSC World America — making its home in Miami at the newly built world’s-largest cruise terminal — and the Norwegian Aqua, sailing now through August out of Port Canaveral. My three-day cruises weren’t enough to sample everything available aboard a weeklong trip, but here are some head-to-head highlights from these two new mega-ships, in case you’re itching for a European vacation without the international flight.

ATTRACTIONS

As a theme park enthusiast, my top priority was the heavily advertised thrill rides, water slides, and other amusements that increasingly adorn cruise ships. MSC, which has previously attempted using Kuka robotic arms at sea, instead came out swinging on World America with the Cliffhanger, a bench seat that pendulums guests back and forth over the side of the 20th deck. The view is undeniably spectacular, but unless you have a severe phobia of height, the secure restraints and gentle rocking motion isn’t nearly as terrifying as advertised. Likewise, the Jaw Drop spiral dry slide descending 11 levels to the split hull’s outdoor promenade is similar to the Abyss on Royal Caribbean’s Oasisclass ships, but is designed to abruptly slow you

down just as it’s getting good; and the water slide’s virtual reality option was one-and-done for me despite delightfully trippy visuals due to a stuttering frame rate. My favorite World America attractions turned out to be the relatively underhyped High Trail Ropes Course — a multi-level playground of zip lines and balance beams — and the basketball court that periodically converts into a bumper-car arena, with shockingly speedy electric vehicles for fender-bending friends and family. Norwegian Aqua’s big claim to fame is Aqua Slidecoaster, Wiegand’s first-ever hybrid water slide/roller coaster at sea (or on land, for that matter). Unlike earlier water coasters at Typhoon Lagoon or Volcano Bay, this new model pushes riders’ rafts uphill using a track-mounted sled instead of water or magnets. The resulting launch feels far more forceful than other methods, and the lack of restraints (beyond handles to white-knuckle) makes it even more intense; it’s only a shame the rafts lose most of that speed upon entering the first tunnel and mostly meander through the anticlimactic remainder. Similarly, Aqua’s Drop dry slide is far more exciting that MSC’s equivalent, thanks to its bomb bay beginning, but some abrupt braking along the way had me begging off re-rides. However, Aqua’s huge Game Zone arcade — featuring Pac-Man and Skee-Ball alongside VR simulators — and interactive Tee Time mini-golf both reignited the 1980s kid in me for a couple hours.

ENTERTAINMENT

When done exploring attractions, I’m the kind of cruiser who plans my evening around live entertainment. My past sailings with MSC have been marked by a mixed bag of talented performers with questionable Eurocentric content, but for World America they’ve licensed the film Dirty Dancing for a live tribute concert, as well as some Queen songs for a show featuring

aerial acrobats and live singers accompanied by a specially recorded orchestra. MSC’s classically trained opera singers and competition ballroom dancers attempt to rock out with enthusiasm, and the ship’s Panorama Lounge boasts impressive projection mapping technology. But the star of the show — aside from the ship’s godmother, Drew Barrymore, accompanied by her Super Bowl commercial co-star, Orlando Bloom — was undoubtedly the high-octane performer inside MSC’s mascot Doremi, leading an adorable Lego character parade. After previewing two of Aqua’s new shows at Norwegian’s Creative Studio in Tampa, I already knew I was in for something special, but I was unprepared for how exceptionally immersive director Patricia Wilcox’s work would be. Revolution: A Celebration of Prince completely surrounds standing audience members (similar to Broadway’s Here Lies Love) while over two dozen diverse, soulful singers, dancers and musicians generate the most enthrallingly energetic jukebox musical since the original Jersey Boys; it was so electrifying I watched it twice. The partial preview I saw of Elements: The World Expanded was equally jaw-dropping, with Vegas-worthy illusions and passionate modern choreography creating a credible challenge to Cirque du Soleil. And the hard-hitting house band from Syd Norman’s Pour House performs a note-for-note re-creation of Fleetwood Mac’s entire Rumours album — complete with salacious liner notes — that puts Classic Albums Live to shame. Even the stand-up talent in the Improv comedy club was a step above the cruise ship standard.

DINING & DRINKING

I’ve written before about how good MSC is at Italian eats like freshly made pasta and pizza, but World America wisely accommodates American palates with a new complimentary grab-and-go diner supplying burgers, nuggies and nachos.

MSC’s Kaito Teppanyaki still outdoes Kobe and its ilk with entertaining chefs grilling guilt-inducing quantities of wagyu beef, the new Paxos Mediterranean eatery has a mouth-watering seafood menu, and the buffet was the nicest and cleanest I’ve encountered aboard an MSC ship. Unfortunately, my MSC main dining room meal was marred by miscommunications and molasses-slow service that made the wedding banquet-quality surf-and-turf taste worse, and my attempts to imbibe at the new Elixir Mixology Bar were equally awkward, perhaps because of the menu’s complexity. Contrast that with the impeccably prompt and personable service I received in Norwegian Aqua’s main dining room, which was only the beginning. On the specialty restaurant front, Sukhothai serves some of the best tom kha gai I’ve tasted outside Asia. And my new favorite restaurant aboard any ship is Indulge Food Hall, a quirky yet cozy hangout where you use iPads to order endless waves of complimentary sharables ranging from tasty tapas and plant-based plates to tandoori and naan, fresh-baked in a real oven. I ate three meals at Indulge in three days, and would happily do so for seven straight; the same could also be said of Aqua’s elegant Whiskey Bar, which pours a perfectly balanced barrel-batch Old Fashioned, as well as endless Suntory highballs.

OVERALL DESIGN & SUMMARY

World America is easily the best and most beautiful MSC ship out of the four I’ve sailed on, and the first I’d even consider violating my “never leave MSC’s Yacht Club” edict for. I also feel good supporting MSC’s environmental efforts, including World America’s green LN2 engines and shore power capability, and especially the brand-new coral restoration center on their pristine private island Ocean Cay. But with a capacity of nearly 7,000 guests, I shudder to think what happens when World America’s 2,614 cabins aren’t mostly empty (like they were on my trip). Norwegian Aqua is only 11 meters shorter and six meters narrower, but it holds about half as many passengers and a thousand fewer cabins. You feel that extra elbow room in both the spacious public spaces and the guest staterooms, where Aqua’s standard balcony cabins are almost 30% larger than MSC’s. And Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian’s 50-year-old private island resort, is finally getting a pier and giant pool, yet (aside from the noisy zip line) isn’t overdeveloped like its neighbors. The elephant in the boat is that MSC’s nightly rates run about half of Norwegian’s, making World America accessible for cruisers on a budget. At the same time, World America felt like sleeping inside a fancy floating mall, while Aqua resembled relaxing at a ritzy resort with plentiful included perks. It may be many moons until I can afford it, but out of these two ships I’m saving my pennies for another voyage aboard Aqua. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

here’s a blue evil eye hanging on a wall inside Parea Greek Taverna in Maitland. I couldn’t help but look at the mataki and think its intended purpose was to ward off the bad juju lingering from the space’s previous administration, Outpost Kitchen. Seemed to be working, too — the exorcised dining areas, as well as the bar with its handsome Mediterranean shelving, bustled with Maitlanders both young and old. When a shout of “Opa!” echoed through the space, heads popped up to witness the tableside flambéeing of our brandy-soaked vlahotiri sheep cheese ($11). But not before a malfunctioning stem lighter delayed the pyro-theatrics, much to our amusement. So, when a fearless modern-day Prometheus whipped out her trusted Bic and set the thing ablaze in the nick of time, that “Opa!” was a lot more pronounced. But fire-licking is something they do very well here at Parea, a name whose meaning has less to do with flames and more to do with fellowship. Certainly, a camaraderie arose in sharing lamb chops ($40) and a tentacle of octopus ($16)

with my dining comrades, though both items were branded by the marks of an open flame. However, the roasted lemon potatoes served with the chops had all the crunch of a soft apple and needed to be fired for another 30 minutes. At least. That said, the manager did bring out another plate of fully cooked spuds and all was made right. Also made right were the phyllo dough pies — feta-filled tiropitakia ($9) and spanakopita ($11) stuffed with spinach, leeks and feta — that resulted in a table full of flakes. And possibly a bit of drool. Really, one could make a meal from the cold and hot meze alone — lemony white sardines ($10) and warm lamb- and beef-filled grape leaves ($13) being a potentially perfect lunch. What I wasn’t particularly enthused about was the cast-iron moussaka ($23). The bechamel lacked the requisite thick consistency, while flavors in the lamb-beef mix fell a bit flat. Was there even cinnamon in this dish? I thought I’d give the pastitsio ($20) a go on my next visit, but

the couple next to us had just returned theirs, saying the Greek lasagna “seemed like it was reheated or microwaved.” Enter a plate of shrimp Mykonos ($30), as vibrant a dish as the Cycladic isle with garlicky, lemony butterflied shrimp and fluffy orzo staging a party in my mouth. It’s one of the restaurant’s signature dishes, and with good reason. Same goes for the loukoumades ($9). The fried dough puffs drizzled in honey and walnuts are the most popular dessert at Parea, but don’t ignore the portokalopita ($9), one of Parea’s lesser-known meal-cappers. The dense orange cake is typically enjoyed with a demitasse of Greek coffee ($4), and I wasn’t about to sidestep tradition. After finishing the coffee, I swirled the cup three times, overturned it onto a napkin for a minute, then held it in its upright position to read my fortune in the coffee grounds. “Does that look like an evil eye to you?” I asked my wife. “No, it looks like a portal,” she said. “So pay up and let’s walk out the door.” Opa.

Sparrow, the Eurocentric wine bar and lounge by James Beard Award finalists for Outstanding Restaurateur Jason and Sue Chin, will softopen May 19 at 807 N. Orange Ave., featuring a focused menu drawing on Spanish and European influences by Reyes Mezcaleria’s Wendy Lopez … Beignets & Brew, specializing in those pillowy choux pastry fritters, has opened in Hunter’s Creek at 2079 W. Town Center Blvd. In addition to the classic varieties such as Nutella, Cinna-Swirl and Turtle beignets are offered, as well as a savory chicken-and-beignets option. Look for another location to open in the old North Quarter Market at 885 N. Orange Ave. later this year … Grappola Cucina Italiana, offering fresh-made pastas, Neapolitan-style pizzas, handmade dolci and more, has opened in the old Farm & Haus space at 526 S. Park Ave. in Winter Park. The owners also run a well-received restaurant in Surrey, England, called La Meridiana … Tiger Sugar, the uber-popular global boba tea chain, has opened next to Kori Dessert at 717 N. Mills Ave. … Look for Halls on 5th to soft-open May 14 at 15 E. Fifth St. in Apopka, featuring such vendors as Butcher’s Nook, Empanada & Co., Parlor Waffle Kitchen, Soulicious Vegan, Sweet & Salty Island Grindz and Thrive Eatery … Tallahassee-based Lucky Goat Coffee will open at 4753 S. Orange Ave. in SoDo on May 15 … Over in Lakeland, the Dram House — a cocktail lounge where “bourbon leads the way” — has opened at 3234 S. Florida Ave. … Hummus House in Winter Park has closed after nearly a decade of serving its brand of fast-casual Mediterranean fare.

CHAYHANA Central Asian delights with an emphasis on Kyrgyzstan are worth seeking out on the western fringes of Altamonte Springs. Plov, a heady rice dish popping with pomegranate arils, plush lulya kebab, hand-pulled lagman and a stew called kuza dymlyama are all standouts. End with homemade, layered honey cake. Open daily. GYUKATSU ROSE Gyukatsu (flash-fried beef cutlets that are seared tableside by guests) is the latest concept explored by Domu’s Sonny Nguyen. Along with the 130gram or 260-gram “proprietary cut” of crossbred wagyu are a host of sides and starches. VOODOO BAYOU The small Florida chain brings some true Crescent City vibes and a decent roster of NOLA staples, most notably jumbo shrimp in an infernal BBQ sauce, buttery biscuits, beignets. Redfish, gumbo

WALALA ASIAN NOODLE HOUSE The latest addition to the city’s hand-pulled noodle scene marries flawless squigglers with an exquisite beef-chicken broth. PALM BEACH MEATS ORLANDO This temple of wagyu is the place to procure prized and pricey cuts of Japanese and Australian wagyu. The restaurant component serves a beefy menu of lush delights, most notably the wagyu katsu sandos, cheesesteaks and burgers. Those with deep pockets will want to splurge on the 4-ounce Kagoshima wagyu steak. The brownie sundae, employing wagyu tallow in the brownie, whipped cream and caramel, is an absolute must. SURAH Surah’s menu of Korean cuisine veers traditional, but it’s traditional fare blended with comforting aspects, and it’s brilliantly executed. MOSONORI Henry Moso’s Winter Park handroll bar spares no expense in quality of fare (the nori is unmatched) or quality of design (the horseshoe-shaped bar is absolutely stunning). J’ADORE THE FRENCH BAKERY This boulangerie tucked in a hidden strip plaza near the Altamonte/Longwood border serves baguettes and French pastries of the highest order. BARKHAVEN DOG BAR This dog bar is a playground for man and his best friend. OZA IZAKAYA Tim Liu, the man behind Mikado Sushi in MetroWest and Boku Sushi in Maitland, spent a fortune to outfit this SeaWorld-area stunner. The varied menu of hot and cold tastings, sushi and ramen achieves varying degrees of success. Yakitori and kushiyaki offerings are solid, as is sashimi with premium cuts from Japan. Open daily. REDLIGHT REDLIGHT

The gastropub is resuscitated inside Redlight Redlight in Audubon Park, thanks to deftly executed and creative comfort dishes plated by chef Jes Tantalo. Even the brunch-averse should pay a visit to the brewpub on Sundays. Too Hot to Handle: Italy —The latest international edition of the celibacy-testing franchise is hosted by rapper and singer Fred De Palma. I’m sure that’s exciting if you’re into Italian hip-hop, but please excuse the rest of us for wishing it was actually Brian DePalma. Imagine if the price of getting handsy was being offed in any one of 10 murder scenarios swiped directly from Hitchcock. (Netflix) The Ugly Stepsister — Of course you knew somebody was going to remake Cinderella as body horror. And of course it’s the Norwegians. “Slyly funny and visually captivating,” says the New York Times. “A few full-screen dick shots,” says Reddit. What are you waiting for? (Shudder)

(Netflix) Untold: The Liver King — What is it with Netflix and dudes named Brian/Bryan Johnson who have curious approaches to health and wellness? First, the streamer introduced us to Bryan Johnson the rich boy, who’s exploring all kinds of weird methods to prolong his life. Now we get to learn about Brian Johnson the influencer, who claims you can pack on the muscle by eating nothing but raw meat. Man, I’m really going to be disillusioned if we learn the singer from AC/DC has been pushing cod liver oil as a cure for the crabs. (Netflix) Welcome, Now Get Lost — The latest streaming experiment in self-control sends a bunch of comics to a remote village, where they have to endure withering insults from the locals. COUNTRY ROADS, TAKE HER HOME Local folk matriarch Terri Binion is leaving Orlando for West Virginia BY MATTH EW MOYE R

“I

’m 66 now. Between the hurricane season, the weather, and now with the cost of living and the politics in our state and around the country … there’s a growing list of reasons for me to find some new scenery, some new weather.” Orlando Americana legend Terri Binion is leaving Orlando, headed northwards to Charleston, West Virginia, to try living in a new town, seeing some new sights and being closer to family. And she’s taking a large chunk of Orlando music history with her. “Charleston is a city in the mountains, so it’s sort of country-city living,” she says in a calm and considered cadence every bit as direct as her lyrics.“I just needed to relocate, get a break from Florida, get somewhere north where I could be in multiple places in short drives, and hopefully continue my career up that way.” The queer singer-songwriter has been a

comforting and vital presence in Central Florida music since the late 1990s, when she moved here after a buzzworthy tour with the Indigo Girls and critical (and musicianly) hosannas for album Leaving This Town. Since then, she has been a pillar of Orlando music, releasing gorgeous records like Fools Gold in 2002 (complete with Lucinda Williams cameo) and, over a decade later, the triumphant The Day After the Night Before. That latter album, from 2016, was a document of a turbulent time in Binion’s life, where she lost her wife, mother and father all in rapid succession — but from those tragedies she pulled out a masterpiece of musical redemption and hope that still stands today as a watershed moment in Orlando music. But Binion spent just as much time encouraging and collaborating with younger artists, working with folks like Jordan Foley and Kaleigh Baker, one-on-one and as part of her “Duets”

songwriters series in the late 2010s. Her willingness to mentor and boost new artists extends far beyond the folk and Americana circles that she moves in. Binion has been an instructor at Orlando Girls Rock Camp for three years, imparting years of hard-won insight and warmhearted encouragement to the next-next generation of Orlando rockers and folkies. “I experienced a real pride and a real joy for these kids, knowing that they pushed through any fear of not fitting in or not being able to pick up and start to learn an instrument from scratch,” she remembers.“And in six days, they’re on stage in a venue with a sold-out audience.” Though there is a small degree of irony in trading living in a red state for living in a slightly redder state, the move makes sense to us. We can see Binion finding fresh inspiration and a new musical family, as she embraces her own familial roots — her family there goes back generations. And West Virginia, after all, is a state that gave the world rockabilly iconoclast Hasil Adkins and legendary bluegrass activist Hazel Dickens. She’s eager to find her new community and talks excitedly of maybe learning a lick or two from bluegrass musicians. “I do have some connections, and I’m really, really grateful for that,” Binion shares. “I met the folks down at the Folklore Music Exchange in downtown Charleston when I was there in October, and I met some other songwriters and musicians that night. So I’m just going to quickly dive in … and start playing in at least limited situations where people can hear the kind of music that I play.”

If you want to see Binion on an Orlando stage for perhaps the last time for awhile, “Terri Binion’s Not Goodbye Party” at Will’s Pub on Monday is the move. A free show organized by Binion confidant and esteemed singer Kaleigh Baker (“I’m really grateful for a friend like Kaleigh,” Binion gushes), the evening features Binion and Baker joined on stage by a cadre of Orlando singer-songwriters playing Binion’s songs and reveling in the joy of playing music with friends. Serious Last Waltz action, in lieu of a traditional goodbye party. “Kaleigh was talking to me, and she said,‘Why don’t we do a night where local songwriters play your songs?’ I just thought that idea was at the deepest level of love and appreciation. It just got to the root of things for me,” says Binion. “We’ve invited about 13 local songwriters to come to Will’s and I’ve handpicked songs for each of these songwriters.” Binion and Baker will co-host. Each invited musician will perform one song, with Binion following with a mini-set. After that, Binion hints that perhaps everyone will hop on stage for a group send-off. As the show and moving dates loom ever larger, Binion is feeling every emotion. She’s packing up a lifetime of memories and possessions from her Orlando life. And she’s selling her home. It’s a home where she produced three records, it’s a home she shared with her wife, Tracy Irwin, before Irwin’s untimely passing in 2011, where she prepared for innumerable gigs and passed time with comrades both musical and not. She’s making a clean break and starting a new act. “It’s overwhelming. I don’t even believe that I’ve felt all of it yet. I think that I’m about to hit some really big walls where I just come faceto-face with my emotions about all of this: my fear, my anxiety, my overwhelming realization about what all I’m leaving behind and who all I’m leaving behind,” says Binion. “I keep saying to myself, ‘You know what you’re getting into, and so just come as prepared as you can,’” she adds, before revealing her missions: “Just be as fluid and as open as you can possibly be, just be the best person that you can be. Go find what you need to find. Be friendly, open your heart, open your mind. Meet people. Have a place where you have coffee every day. Find the place where you’re just going to sit quietly and have a beer with some locals and begin the conversation and start to look out for where you can be useful in your new community.” music@orlandoweekly.com

Sam Prekop returns to Orlando after years to show his new musical life BY MATTH EW MOYE R

t’s been awhile since Sam Prekop last played in Orlando. The jack-of-all trades musician reckons the last time was with his unpredictable Chicago indie-rock band The Sea and Cake in the 1990s. There will be a lot of mutual catching-up betwixt audience and performer in order when Prekop plays an intimate gig at the Casselberry Arts Center Saturday. The Sea and Cake, for the uninitiated, were something of an alternative supergroup, consisting of Prekop, Eric Claridge, Archer Prewitt and John McEntire. And they were a band that never failed to innovate and expand rock and pop tropes. But these days Prekop plays solo, eschewing guitars and vocals for mysterious modular synth consoles and cables. With these arcane electronics, Prekop creates buoyant, lush and oft-playful synthesized soundscapes. He’s coming to Florida for three shows, and it’s an essential event for the musically discerning. Prekop’s two most recent releases, Drawing One Two and The Sparrow, are elegant and concise, and yet unafraid to get glitchy and propulsive. As Prekop likes to keep live work loose and improvisational, you might not hear these exact pieces live, but he mines largely the same tones, pacing and “sonic territories.” “It’s one really long piece that evolves, sort

of like a seamless series of five or six songs or movements,” says Prekop of current live sets. “They meld into each other and it’s a form that I’ve been working with for quite a while now that makes sense live. Just keep the flow going.” “One thing I’ve learned is that a lot of stuff has to happen for people to stay engaged, or for me to be engaged while I’m doing it,” he adds. “I’m dealing with, usually, four or five separate synth voices at the same time, and sort of juggling them. … I just feel it out. If I feel like one thing is really working well, I’ll continue on in that direction for a while, until I exhaust it. But it’s very intuitive choices on the spot that make sense in the moment. A big part of the show is not knowing exactly what’s going to happen.” Prekop has been working in modular synthesis for about 15 years. It’s an obsession he says is down to a longtime bandmate and just “getting tired of playing guitar all the time.” “I blame a lot of this on John McEntire, who’s the drummer of The Sea and Cake. He’s a super hardcore synth-head and has amazing gear. He introduced those sounds to The Sea and Cake. And it’s through him that I also became obsessed with what [modular synths] can do. And I think a big appeal back then was that they were so much more rarely used in the rock band context,

especially compared to now. In terms of modular synth stuff, I don’t think it’s ever been this approachable or available to people as it is now. It’s a golden age for this type of stuff.” When asked about his current compositional practices, Prekop draws a surprising throughline to another of his longtime creative outlets, photography. “A big part of my process is just to gather ideas. I’m also a photographer and I walk around a lot and take photos of whatever catches my eye or makes some sense to me on whatever level. And when I’m working with the synth stuff, I’m often just throwing out really random, quick ideas, hoping that something clicks and stands out as better than something else. This week’s column is a deep, winding dive into Orlando music history. Let’s begin with Damage, a local synth-punk group that wasn’t just notable in the 1980s but also notably progressive. Well, Damage are back in manifold ways. First, they’re both re-releasing their 1986 debut album and unveiling a brand-new album. Synthology, Damage’s maiden LP, was originally released on Space Fish Records (a label affiliated with Club Space Fish, the fabled Parramore alternative nightclub that lives in glorious infamy for a 1991 show at which the supremely degenerate GG Allin was arrested for doing exactly what he was famous for). Now, thanks to the care and persistence of Orlando Punk Archive, the obscure 1986 gem is seeing digital release for the first time ever on Bandcamp as a name-yourprice download. Recorded at a promising time when Damage were beginning to tour regionally and play alongside legends like Adrenalin O.D., Dead Kennedys, Battalion of Saints and SNFU, Synthology is a bit of both Orlando music history and groundbreaking punk. Punk rock and synthesizers are so historically divergent as to be almost mutually exclusive, especially in the 1980s. But Damage dared to break and blur those boundaries with, in the words of founding member Mike Brown, “the audacity — stupidity? — to play hardcore punk rock on keytar synths, and we did that shit in front of skinheads, metalheads and punks.” With Synthology Damage achieved punk intensity with fresh dimension and no guitars. Like hardcore’s answer to Suicide, it was a novel sound simultaneously primitive and forward. Damage aren’t just back retrospectively; they’re also emerging from their 30-year hibernation with an all-new, even more synth-forward

With 1986’s Synthology, Orlando electro-rampagers Damage achieved raw punk intensity with fresh dimension and no guitars. Like hardcore’s answer to Suicide, this band was simultaneously primitive and forward album. The Modern World LP releases May 10 on both streaming platforms and limited-edition vinyl. That same night, Damage will be doing a special reunion performance and album release celebration in Orlando. Although core members Mike Brown and Joe Livingston no longer live here, Brown is resolute when he says, “Damage is a Florida band. We all reside in NYC now, but our roots are in the Orlando, Florida, music scene and as they say, ‘You can take the band out of Florida, but you can’t take the Florida out of the band.” So they’re returning to their original roots here as headlining guests of the big Dave Gage tribute night this weekend, an event that’s yet another rabbit hole of Orlando music history itself. Dave Gage was a key and active figure in the Orlando music scene since the early 1980s in bands like Disco Biscuit, Dope and Bloody Mary. He passed away in 2014 from melanoma

(fuck cancer). Damage’s Brown and Livingston were close friends and bandmates of Gage in the original lineup of Disco Biscuit. Regarding Dave Gage’s work in particular, music from his various bands is currently being compiled and released anew on Bandcamp. Gage will be commemorated this weekend with a big showcase featuring many of his friends, which include Damage, Macaluso Schumann Trio, Deficit of Dreams, Curtains and The Chotchkies. Expect him to land like butter in a hot pan to remind everyone why he’s one of the brightest, most original new-generation hip-hop voices to emerge from here. Opening will be Tampa rapper Lord Xzae. Malcolm Todd, a rising star in the Gen-Z indie pop and alternative R&B scene, is set to perform in Orlando Wednesday at the Plaza Live. This Orlando stop is one of 26 dates on the “Wholesome Rockstar Tour,” his first-ever headlining tour, following the release of his debut album this year. The eponymous record features the Billboard Hot 100 hit “Chest Pain (I Love)” and the collaborative single “Bleed” with Omar Apollo. Todd gained widespread attention in 2023 with viral hits like “Art House” and “Roommates,” leading to a record deal with Columbia. He started his music journey in the middle of the pandemic, while he was only a sophomore in high school. And like many of today’s on-the-rise musicians, TikTok set Todd’s career into full momentum after his song “Lately” became a viral smash. Damned

We’re all damned anyway (this is in no way a pun, seriously), so we might as well enjoy a good show on the way down. OG U.K. punks The Damned have reconvened a classic 1980s lineup and are taking the U.S. by storm on tour yet again, which includes an Orlando return after much too long. David Vanian, Captain Sensible and Paul Gray are rejoined by original drummer Rat Scabies for a tour that has seen them revisiting seminal 1980s releases Machine Gun Etiquette, Strawberries and The Black Album. This is a band that helped kickstart U.K. punk back in the Year Zero that was the late 1970s, with seminal singles like “New Rose” and “Smash It Up.” The albums spotlighted on this tour were ones that saw the band stretching their creative legs and writing heady new material that took in elements of psychedelia and gothic music. Definitely a show you’ll regret missing — the original trio look great and sound even better, throwing up two fingers at the specter of age. Meet Naboo! Naboo (A564022) is less than a year old, and already in and out of the shelter multiple times. She came in as a stray, and is an absolutely amazing dog — good with other dogs, affectionate with people — we didn’t think Naboo would take so long to be adopted. But sadly, she has spent a good part of her short life under our care. Like any other puppy, Naboo is high energy, and will need patience and training. Though small, she is strong and fast and does have a high prey drive for small animals. But the thing Naboo likes to do the most is hug people. She is incredibly affectionate and sweet, and our staff and volunteers absolutely adore her. Naboo is a play-group rock star — tolerant but playful, she has fun with other dogs and genuinely enjoys sharing her space with them. We have no idea why no one has adopted this sweet and beautiful girl. But we’re hoping to change all that.
