Mayor Demings gave a thumbs-up to Florida sheriffs’ criticism of Trump’s immigration crackdown, the city began its demolition of Pulse nightclub, feds won’t say whether a new ICE office will open near UCF, and other news you may have missed last week.

» Demings applauded GOP sheriffs for speaking against federal immigration efforts

While Ron DeSantis has slammed a group of local Republican law enforcement officers for saying the federal government needs to recalibrate on immigration enforcement, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings — a Democrat who hopes to succeed DeSantis in the governor’s mansion — said it’s about time they spoke up. “They have gone overboard,” Demings said, regarding Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s attempts to fulfill President Donald Trump’s goal of mass deportations. “I applaud the sheriffs for finally speaking up about something that was unfair and out of balance.” Members of the state’s Immigration Enforcement Council — four sheriffs and four police chiefs appointed by state GOP leaders — stunningly said that they were considering sending a letter urging Trump and GOP congressional leaders to review the guidelines targeting undocumented immigrants for deportation. Before being elected mayor in 2018, Demings served 10 years as sheriff of Orange County, including a stint as president of the Florida Sheriffs Association, when he was involved in crafting legislation and policies for the entire state.

» The demolition of Pulse nightclub began last week

The demolition of Orlando’s Pulse nightclub building began last Wednesday as part of the city’s advancing effort to build a permanent memorial on the site. The memorial will commemorate the deadly mass shooting at Pulse on June 12, 2016, that killed 49 and wounded dozens. The towering sign for Pulse was taken down from the property the week before and stored in an environmentally controlled storage space, according to city officials. A permanent Pulse memorial has been in the works for 10 years. The city took over the process of building one in 2023 following the failed efforts of the nonprofit OnePulse Foundation, founded by former bar owner Barbara Poma. The city’s memorial is expected to be completed in fall 2027.

» Feds gave conflicting information on whether a new ICE office will open near UCF

A federal agency told Orlando’s U.S. Congressman Maxwell Frost, D-FL, last week that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will not be opening a new office in the Central Florida Research Park structure near the University of Central Florida, as first reported by the Orlando Sentinel. Yet, when reached for comment by Orlando Weekly Thursday, the agency wouldn’t confirm their statement, saying instead that they are “committed to working with all of our partner agencies to meet their workspace needs.” They did not confirm or deny their interest in the site near UCF. Tech news magazine Wired reported in February that ICE was reportedly eyeing a lease location at 12249 Science Drive for a new field office, as part of the Trump administration’s plan to expand ICE’s presence nationwide. The agency already has a field office near the Florida Mall, and its officials have also reportedly looked at a large industrial warehouse in southeast Orlando, about a half-hour away, to serve as an immigrant detention facility.

» ‘Never Trumpers’ launched ad blitz to promote No Kings protests in Florida

A nonprofit group whose board includes high-profile dissident Republicans placed advertisements in 27 newspapers in Florida this week to promote the No Kings rallies protesting President Donald Trump and his administration scheduled to take place Saturday, March 28. Representatives of Home of the Brave say that overall they are spending $1 million in a national ad campaign in 300 newspapers to highlight the rallies across 31 states. The print ad starts out with the statement: “We the People March Again. The abuses have not stopped. Neither will we.” This will be the third national No Kings day of protests taking place around the country over the past year, with similar protests held in June and October 2025.

» Florida’s attorney general said he’ll investigate Discord over child safety concerns

Attorney General James Uthmeier said last Wednesday his office will investigate Discord, a messaging platform, for allegedly putting children at risk of being groomed by predators online. The office issued a subpoena for information relating to their marketing to children, enforcing age-verification

requirements, content moderation, parental control features and reporting of exploitative activity, according to the press release. In December, Uthmeier’s office sued Roblox, a popular online game, alleging the company “deceived parents about the safety of its platform while failing to protect children from accessing graphic adult content and being contacted and groomed by predators.” Discord is one of the most popular chat applications where users can communicate by text, audio and video and send files within the platform. “With so many criminal investigations leading to Discord, they owe us an explanation as to why predators keep getting to kids on the app,” Uthmeier stated in a post on X.

» DeSantis is continuing his push to end vaccine mandates

Gov. DeSantis’ attempt to alter the state’s vaccine policies for schoolchildren failed during the now-concluded legislative session, but he maintained at a press conference that he remains committed to seeing his policies pass before having to leave his post in January 2027. The 2026 regular session was DeSantis’ last as governor, but the Republican could have as many as three more opportunities in the form of special sessions to strong-arm his policies through a reluctant Legislature. DeSantis criticized the Florida House specifically for the demise of his vaccine proposal, which he calls “medical freedom.” With roughly two weeks left in the regular 2026 session, House Speaker Daniel Perez all but declared the medical freedom bill in the House (HB 917) dead. Despite Perez’s comments, the Senate continued to debate and ultimately voted, 23-15, to pass its version of the medical freedom measure, SB 1756. The House and Senate bills were not identical, although they shared similar provisions. Both bills would have allowed ivermectin to be sold by Florida pharmacists, instated a permanent ban on mandates for any mRNA-based vaccines, and established in statute a non-medical exemption from immunization requirements for schoolchildren based on a parent’s conscience. The exemption also would have applied to children in day care.

TRANS POSITION

Emails reveal an influential out-of-town anti-trans group is behind a Florida bill targeting gender-affirming health care providers

An anti-LGBTQ+ lobbying group based out of Washington, D.C., tried and failed this year to take Florida’s restrictions on gender-affirming care for trans minors a step further by not only drafting language for the legislation but also writing an op-ed to help its sponsors promote it.

A pair of Florida bills filed this year in the state Legislature (HB 743/SB 1010) sought to penalize healthcare providers who provide

gender-affirming care to minors under 18, or any other healthcare provider who aids or abets them.

The House bill, sponsored by GOP Rep. Lauren Melo, was later expanded to apply to any person — including a parent, counselor or family friend — who is “knowingly aiding or abetting” gender-affirming care for a minor, punishable as a third-degree felony.

It would have further given the Florida Attorney General’s office the authority to

conduct an investigation and bring a civil action for damages, injunctive relief and civil penalties of up to $100,000.

“Anyone who aids and abets, whether it is giving them counseling on how to get gender-affirming care for a minor, or drives them … It’s very clear what aid and abet means,” Melo argued during the bill’s third committee hearing, when pressed on whether a parent or a therapist could be affected.

“They would be found guilty,” she confirmed. Records show, however, that Melo — a Republican from Naples running for Florida Senate this year — didn’t come up with this proposal herself. Draft language for the legislation was emailed by a lobbyist for the national nonprofit Do No Harm to Melo’s office back in November 2025, according to email communications obtained by Orlando Weekly through a public records request.

Founded in 2022, Do No Harm launched with a mission of “protecting patients and physicians from woke healthcare,” per their initial press release. According to the Associated Press, the group has reportedly sent lobbyists to more than a half-dozen states, including Florida, as of 2023 to advocate for restrictions on access to gender-affirming care for transgender people.

Toxic plants & lawn chemicals

Spring gardening can be risky—fertilizers, pesticides, and certain plants (like lilies, azaleas, and tulips) can be harmful if ingested.

Mud, standing water, and bacteria

Puddles can contain harmful bacteria (like leptospirosis). Try to keep your dog from drinking standing water.

Wildlife encounters

More animals are active—snakes, bees, and other critters can pose risks depending on your area.

Heat creep

It’s not summer yet, but temperatures can rise quickly. Dogs can still overheat, especially on sunny days or during exercise.

[continued from page 9]

They’re known for producing model legislation that their lobbyists distribute to state legislators willing to champion their policy endeavors.

One of their lobbyists in Florida, Jorge Chamizo of the firm Florida Partners, emailed talking points to Melo’s office for the bill in January, at the request of her aide, and wrote a draft op-ed for Melo, according to emails and a draft Word document with metadata that identifies Chamizo as the author. The opinion column was later published word for word on the news website Florida Politics.

“I wanted to share this draft op/ed for Rep Melo’s review and further revisions. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you,” Chamizo wrote to Melo’s legislative aide on Jan. 29. “Thank you Jorge!” her aide (also named Jorge) responded just a minute later.

The op-ed describes gender-affirming care as “dangerous, invasive procedures to which no child should be subjected.”

Gender-affirming care, a term that can refer to medical or non-medical services, aims to affirm the gender identity of a nonbinary or transgender person. It can refer to medical procedures such as cosmetic surgery, hormonal puberty blockers, or something as simple as using a person’s preferred name or pronouns.

It’s been endorsed by almost every major medical association as a treatment to help reduce risk of suicide and support the mental health of transgender people, including youth. In recent years, however, it’s become a key target of the political right-wing’s so-called culture wars, staunchly opposed under the guise of protecting “parental rights” and rejecting “gender ideology.”

“Gender activists may cloak the true nature of these procedures under euphemisms such as ‘gender-affirming care,’ but make no mistake. We are talking about the chemical and surgical mutilation of children,” reads the op-ed, drafted by Do No Harm’s lobbyist and published under Melo’s and Senate bill sponsor Clay Yarborough’s names. “This is anything but care.”

The opinion article was published as a guest column by Florida Politics on Feb. 3, although emails indicate the op-ed was likely pitched to other papers as well. “Quick question: what paper will you be pitching this to?” Melo’s aide asked in a follow-up email, the same day her office received the draft.

“We would run it in Tallahassee, in her current House and future Senate district, Miami, Orlando, Jacksonville, and any other newspapers that she would have a preference for,” Chamizo responded. Opinion editors for the Tallahassee Democrat and Naples Daily News did not respond to emails from the Weekly asking if they had received requests to publish the op-ed.

Stalled out

House Bill 743 advanced to the full House floor in mid February — halfway through session — after clearing three legislative

committees with Republican support, but did not get a vote by the full chamber by the time that session ended this past Friday.

The similar Senate version (which got a surprising “yes” vote from outgoing Democratic Sen. Darryl Rouson of Tampa) meanwhile cleared only one of three of its assigned committees before dying on the vine.

It was one of several highly controversial proposals that advanced but ultimately failed to pass during lawmakers’ 60-day annual legislative session that ended March 13. This year’s session was notably marked by distrust between House and Senate leadership, dysfunction and a failure of the legislature to address leadership’s stated priority of tackling affordability issues.

Rep. Melo, when questioned about Do No Harm’s involvement with HB 743, was unapologetic about her support. She told the Weekly through a spokesperson that she was “grateful” for the support her bill received in the House, to constituents for “encouragement,” and “to stakeholders across the country whose stories of gender abuse continue to inspire this fight.”

“While HB 743 did not advance this session, I remain committed to creating real accountability for health care providers who willingly participate in these damaging procedures,” she said in a statement.

Lindsay Killen, chief strategy officer for Do No Harm, acknowledged in a statement to Orlando Weekly after this story was published that a “key pillar” of her organization’s work is to educate and equip legislators with tools and policy proposals to “protect children” from

from the Senate yet establishing any direct connection between Yarborough and Do No Harm.

War on ‘woke health care’

At least 27 states in the U.S. today currently limit gender-affirming care for minors, while at least eight prohibit a healthcare provider “aiding or abetting” it. That includes Florida, which prohibits “aiding or abetting” a criminal offense, according to a staff analysis.

In 2023, Florida lawmakers designated providing gender-affirming medical care to minors a third-degree felony under SB 254, a law that passed largely along party lines. Sen. Yarborough, the bill sponsor, framed it as an effort to “protect the children,” despite concerns from parents of trans kids who argued it would do the opposite.

“I am just super angry, super angry that these people are blocking me from protecting my child and protecting and doing what’s right for my patients,” Dr. Robin Hauser, a pediatrician and parent of a trans daughter, told the Tallahassee Democrat in January. “You love your kids more than life, and you know them better than anybody, and so don’t tell me what I can and can’t do with my children.”

The 2023 law also restricts access to gender-affirming care for trans adults by barring them from receiving care through telehealth, requiring this care to be provided by a physician only, and forcing patients to sign medically inaccurate consent forms to receive care.

A national survey conducted by the Human Rights Campaign shortly after that law passed

“physicians, nurses, medical students, patients, and policymakers focused on keeping identity politics out of medical education, research, and clinical practice,” according to its website. It established a lobbying arm for itself, Do No Harm Action, in 2023.

The group has found friendly political territory in Florida under the leadership of Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has designated himself a champion of the so-called parental rights movement, the right wing’s manufactured war against diversity, equity and inclusion, and has enthusiastically supported policies undermining the rights of LGBTQ+ Floridians in recent years.

In 2022, DeSantis signed into law the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, restricting discussion of sexual identity and gender orientation in K-12 classrooms. He’s also signed laws aiming to get DEI initiatives out of public schools and universities, and is expected to approve a bill passed by lawmakers this year (SB 1134) that would prevent local governments from funding or promoting DEI, with limited carve-outs.

As Vox recently reported, the movement against transgender rights appears to have shifted from undermining opportunities for transgender people — such as access to healthcare — to extinguishing the idea that they exist altogether, through actions such as preventing them from updating the sex marker on their passports and licenses.

Under the Trump administration, such efforts have been emboldened by the conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court. Some of the same actors that helped shape that conservative majority, including right-wing judicial activist Leonard Leo, have also funded Do No Harm, according to HuffPost.

“Every Floridian deserves access to the health care they need, and politicians have no place in personal medical decisions,” says Abdelilah Skhir, senior campaign strategist for the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida.

“The politicians and activists pushing attacks like HB 743 are part of a coordinated, nationwide effort to remove transgender people from public life,” Abdelilah Skhir, senior campaign strategist for the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida, told Orlando Weekly in a statement. “Every Floridian deserves access to the health care they need, and politicians have no place in personal medical decisions,” he continued.

what she described as “experimental and often irreversible interventions.”

“Florida rightfully passed a law with key protections for minors and now state legislators are exploring mechanisms to ensure anyone who violates state and federal laws stopping sex-changes on minors are held accountable,” Killen continued. “As the leading group of medical professionals working to stop the child sex change industry at the state and federal level, of course we support their efforts.”

Yarborough did not respond to our request for comment on the group’s involvement in this legislation. We have not received records back

found that more than 90 percent of transgender Floridians said the gender-affirming care ban made them feel less safe. Eighty percent said they wanted to move out of Florida or had already taken steps to do so.

Shifts in the policy landscape for access to what trans people consider a form of life-saving healthcare can be attributed at least in part to the aggressive lobbying of groups like Do No Harm that coordinate with lawmakers in state legislatures across the country.

Funded initially through seed money from billionaire conservative activists, Do No Harm is a national nonprofit that claims to represent

“A threat against any one group is a threat against us all. We can fight for the future we and our families deserve by pushing back against attacks like HB 743 — and all efforts to push people into the shadows because of who they are, who they love, or where they’re from.”

Rep. Melo did not respond to a follow-up question about whether she plans to refile HB 743 next year, potentially from the Senate next time if she wins her election this year.

As it is, state lawmakers will be returning to Tallahassee next month to hammer out a state budget, since they failed to pass one by session’s end. Finalizing a state budget is the only thing they are constitutionally required to do during their annual legislative sessions. This is the second year in a row they have failed to do so in their 60-day window.

PUT A LITTLE LOVE IN YOUR HEART

The ‘Love Is Love’ variety show at Anthem Orlando aims to connect with audiences one song at a time

Aka Cabaret is turning Anthem Orlando into a pink-hued, rose-festooned celebration of love and community with its variety show Love Is Love running three days this week.

Founded by Daniel Perez, Aka Cabaret is a budding pan-genre troupe looking to redefine nightlife with high-energy, high-quality productions.

Perez tells Orlando Weekly that a love-themed concept has been in development for quite some time. “It’s something that’s been bubbling for me, but I found the right people to collaborate with,” Perez says. “Theater, art, cabaret and music, and everything we’re doing as part of the show is really collaborative.”

Achieving Perez’s goal of a cabaret-style variety

show celebrating the community required a cohesive ensemble. “Love is such a broad topic that I wanted to make sure that we had a specific point of view on it,” Perez says. “That’s where we landed on Love Is Love, to make it about celebrating all forms of love, but also centering it on queer art.”

Love Is Love features artists and performers carefully curated to create the show Perez dreamed of. Musicians Mimi Batista and Cesar De La Rosa join violinist Peter Vawter to create an immersive musical experience, all hosted by local drag queen Daisy Dior.

Perez explains that Dior serves as a guide through the show. “When we were creating the show, I knew I wanted a drag element to be part of this. It’s not just about the music. It’s going to make you feel, but Daisy is going to guide you through the night.”

Dior, meanwhile, tells OW that the diverse manifestations of love make the show a connective experience. “‘Love’ is love in your community, love in your neighbor, love of the art form, [it’s] all-encompassing, all aspects of love,” Dior says. “It’s not just necessarily love between two people, but incorporating it into a broad spectrum.”

Love Is Love features songs from seminal queer artists like Elton John, Sam Smith, Kim Petras and Billie Eilish. “We really looked to twist

expectations,” Perez says. “There are some really fun arrangements of songs that you already know. Our opening number is a very well-known Lady Gaga song, but we’re taking a point of view that is really campy and jazzy.” Additionally, Vawter will reinterpret pop hits with solo violin arrangements. Perez sets the scene, explaining that walking into Love Is Love, attendees will be illuminated with pink lighting and upbeat music. “The very beginning of the show is Daisy and the singers coming out and doing [the] opening number,” Perez says. “That just tells you you’re in good hands.” Perez praises the performers’ artistry, emphasizing that each engages the audience uniquely.“Each one of the artists has a couple of solo moments in the show,” Perez says. “I’m really, really excited to see them connect with the audience and bring their own spin on the songs that they’re presenting.” Perez and Dior emphasize that Anthem’s intimacy is perfect for the atmosphere that Love Is Love aims to create.

“It’s not like we’re in this giant massive theater where people are scattered everywhere,” Dior says. “They’re all going to be in there, and then they could eventually connect with the table next to them, or the person next to [them at] the bar. Who knows, friendships could blossom, or someone single comes to the event and they meet another person who’s single. There’s so much that could blossom from this because it’s surrounded by love.” Dior’s favorite part of the show is a romantic interpretation of a drag staple. “Traditionally, at a drag show, you’re handing the queen a dollar,” Dior says. “We have a moment where everyone is going to be able to tip with a rose. They can place the rose [behind] your ear, they could place it on the collar of your shirt, or up a sleeve.”

The immersiveness of Love Is Love fosters connections among the audience through music and dance. “The very end of the show is a huge disco party, essentially,” Perez says. “Our goal is to bring everyone together. And I know that … everyone’s going to remember getting an opportunity to dance together and be part of that.”

At its core, Love Is Love is an experience designed to entertain and comfort.“I think of entertainment as like medicine for the soul,” Perez says. “I really want folks to feel that relief.”

Dior says that community engagement is crucial right now, and Love Is Love aims to foster that. “Orlando, I mean, it’s struggling in a sense of queer-friendly spaces and just spaces in general,” Dior says. “What we do is to bring safety, respect and love to our communities. This show will be really nice for the Orlando scene.”

Winter Park Playhouse winds up their Orlando Shakes residency with a Kevin Kelly cabaret before moving into their newly renovated home in July

Over the past quarter-century, Kevin Kelly has become one of Central Florida’s most celebrated crooners by effortlessly transporting audiences back to the era of Bing Crosby, Bobby Darin and Frank Sinatra. This week, on March 25 and 26, Kelly cranks up his musical time machine again with On the Atchison, Topeka and the Winter Park Stage, the latest in his long-running series of cabarets for Winter Park Playhouse and the final WPP show to premiere in their temporary home at Orlando Shakes before they return to their renovated Orange Avenue HQ.

The youngest of five children, with a minister for a father, Kelly began playing piano and singing in church at an early age. “Everybody played some kind of instrument at some point in their lives, so I think I got bit very young,” says Kelly. “I just liked being on stage.”

Even though he moved into secular music during college at Kansas State University, his family remains supportive and have unexpectedly showed up for his shows, from Bent to Grease.“My favorite moment is, when I did Pump Boys and Dinettes years ago, my father snuck in a little recorder, and he just held it in his coat and recorded the show because I was doing country music and he was a huge country music fan,” Kelly recalls. “So that little cassette sat behind his desk forever.”

After a post-college stint as music director of a small theater company in Newport, Rhode Island, Kelly came to Orlando in 1997 seeking escape from northern winters and lived on Kirkman Road [full disclosure: with my wife’s college roommate] while working full-time as a character coordinator and scheduler backstage at Walt Disney World.

“I’d stopped performing. There was actually about a 10-year period where I didn’t sing, didn’t

play [music], I didn’t do anything,” he says. “It was soul-crushing. I said, ‘I’ve gotta do this, because it’s what I do.’”

After getting cast by Katrina Ploof for a reading at Shakes, Kelly was hired by Mad Cow’s Alan Bruun to play John Wilkes Booth in Sondheim’s Assassins , which coincided with him leaving Disney. Aside from an abortive outing as an Ollivanders wandkeeper when Universal’s first Harry Potter land opened — “This kind of nitpicky corporate theater really isn’t for me, so I walked out of that shift and I never went back,” he says — Kelly has largely worked under contract for Winter Park Playhouse, making him one of the relatively rare Actors Equity union members making a living in Orlando outside the theme parks.

“I held out for a long time only because companies would rather hire a non-Equity [performer] because it’s less expensive, so I feel like that actually did allow me to book a little more,” Kelly says. “But as I got older … I thought, I’m getting of a certain age, and I need to really start thinking about insurance and all that stuff. So that was the big impetus for me, and I’m happy to to be a part of the union.”

Although he’s starred in many scripted shows for Winter Park Playhouse since first getting cast in Golf: The Musical over 15 years ago, he says cabaret is his favorite format for entertaining “because you’re free. You don’t have to be a character; you’re just you. I get to sing songs that I love — that I connect with — and tell stories [and] stupid jokes [that] make the audience groan. … Especially now we’ve got so much on our minds, weighing us down day by day with the news and social media and stuff, so I just really

strive to keep everything fun and light.”

When asked how he develops his cabarets, Kelly confesses, “I always have good intentions, and I always think, ‘Oh, God, I’m going to do some kind of theme.’ [But] nine times out of 10, I get all my songs on little 3-by-5 cards [and] shuffle them around until I get the combination I like. And then I just kind of build it around the songs.” He says his latest show was scrapped and rewritten from scratch in just four weeks: “It may be kind of a mishmash of songs, it’s always kind of an organized chaos, but that’s what I enjoy.”

For this outing, Kelly is once again accompanied by keyboardist Chris Leavy, his frequent collaborator and a WPP fixture. “We’ve done so many of these shows together, we joke that I can send him a song list and I’ll see you the night of the show, because after working so much together we know how each other works. I can literally just turn and look at him and he’ll know that I have no freaking clue what song is coming next,” says Kelly. “He is one of the most beautiful minds in in this town, so talented, such a treasure trove of information.”

Winter Park Playhouse is scheduled to cut the ribbon for their newly rebuilt home on July 7, beginning their season in August on an expanded stage with additional breathing room behind the curtain, which should make quick changes more comfortable. But one thing that shouldn’t change is the feeling that has made WPP an anchor of the theater community.

“I’ve always found that Winter Park Playhouse is a very warm and very family-oriented kind of atmosphere,” says Kelly. “Meaning that when you start working for them, you become part of their family.”

LICKETY SPIT

Seemo’s Shawarma will make your weekend dining decision quick and easy

It’s great to see the city’s shawarma scene leveling up with a healthy Levantine representation of spit-shaved meats. There’s Lebanese (Beirut Grill & Deli, Cedar Halal Food & Grill), Syrian (Maroush Shawarma & Grill), Egyptian (The Dough Show) and Iraqi (Rawsha Mediterranean Cuisine) shawarma being carved across the greater Orlando area. In recent years, Palestinian variants have emerged, with Heart of Jerusalem joining mainstays Jerusalem Restaurant in Kissimmee and sister restaurant Flame Kabob in Dr. Phillips. More recently still, Mashawi, a food truck from the owners of Palestinian coffee outfit Zayn & Co., launched this month, but yet another mobile op, this one parked on the fringes of Azalea Park, is making a case for shawarma supremacy.

Seemo’s Shawarma is a trailer decked out in fire-engine red, and it’s hard to fight the fire-licked dishes set forth by Waseem “Seemo” Saedi, a Palestinian by way of Jordan. Parked on a lawn next to the Astro Skate roller rink

on South Goldenrod Road, the trailer draws a steady flow of cars navigating a dirt road, then rounding the mobile conveyance to get to a grass parking lot. There are 10 Seemo’s Shawarma-branded picnic tables, all with umbrellas fitted with lights in their skeletons for bright, photo-friendly nighttime dining. It’s where we dug into a steak shawarma ($15) that Saedi hand-fashioned from layers of ribeye and fat trimmings before securing it onto a vertical spit.

“I’ve gotten really good at it,” he said about making shawarma from scratch, “stacking it probably takes me less than an hour” — which is about how long it took us to eat everything we ordered.

That steak shawarma wrapped in Palestinian saj bread (it’s cooked on a convex griddle) comes stuffed with house pickles, tomatoes, red onions and parsley. Then tahini and pomegranate sauce is spooned in, followed by a dash of sumac. Wonderful stuff, even if the toum

(75 cents) we ordered as a dip lacked the requisite fluff. “I’m just shaking my head at how it turned out,” Seemo told us with full-on contrition about the emulsified garlic sauce. “The texture is off, but the flavor is there.”

Indeed it was. Moreover, the shawarma was so enjoyable, I had no trepidation ordering the hokey-sounding chicken shawarmadilla ($13), essentially a chicken shawarma but stuffed in a flour tortilla with Monterey jack cheese and griddled. It came with a side of fattoush salad and a piercing shatta hot sauce. The tortilla, basted in a broth/olive oil blend and seared, added flavor, but let’s talk about this ridiculous chicken shawarma. The thigh-and-breast shavings marinated in a host of secret spices (of which Saedi would only divulge garlic and onion powders, cinnamon, cayenne and chili powder) get their juicy lusciousness from — heavens to trompo — chicken skin. I could’ve strapped on the four-wheelers, headed to Astro Skate, careened around the track like Skinny Minnie Miller, then come back for another one these fusion-y handhelds. But I had a double smashburger ($13) on a grilled potato roll to get through. The 80/20 patties glopped with American cheese, diced caramelized onions, jalapeños, pickles, red onions and Seemo’s burger sauce smacked, and their crispy perimeters raised the burger to elite status.

Appetizers were of a similarly high caliber — deep-fried corn ($6) tossed in butter, Parmesan and Cajun seasonings didn’t make a lick of sense being served from a Palestinian shawarma truck, but I’d sure as hell order it again. Then there’s Dooni’s falafel (six for $5, 12 for $9, 18 for $13), arguably some of the very best falafel I’ve had the pleasure of eating in this city. The recipe for these fried beauties comes from Seemo’s mother-in-law, but it’s his wife, Dooni, who makes them every day from ground chickpeas blended with parsley, cilantro, onions, sesame seeds and spices. They’re shaped before being fried to order, and my own better half, who is not a fan of falafel, devoured them with great abandon.

When Seemo came to check on us again, he looked so grateful at the joy we were getting out of these beauties. He then told us that his wife has many family members who live in Palestine’s occupied territories and that 70 of them have been killed by the IDF’s genocide in Gaza.

It added poignancy, and weight, to the food this friendliest of chefs cooked for us. It also served as motivation for us to continue paying weekend visits to Seemo’s Shawarma. I’d encourage you to do the same. And, yes: Free Palestine. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

Jo Nesbo’s Detective Hole — Oslo is in the grip of a serial killer in a miniseries based on the

Premieres Friday:

53 Sundays — The diagnosis is comedy when three Spanish siblings try to figure out what to do about their dad’s worsening dementia. Untold: The Death & Life of Lamar Odom — Learn all the lurid details of the 2015 incident in which the NBA great was found nearly dead in a Nevada whorehouse. Which may sound bad, but it’s still better than being found totally dead in a Men’s Wearhouse. (Netflix)

BOOM SELECTA

Collaging a (vegetarian) noise-chili with Ironing’s Andrew Chadwick ahead of his Orlando return this week

“Ifeel like it’s a compulsion, it just kind of scratches an itch,” Andrew Chadwick says of Ironing’s experimental sounds. “It’s like a chaos flow.”

For this Gainesville-based, noise-obsessed turntable-balancer — who’s now been performing as Ironing for over two decades — the start of his eclectic creative practice was born on his family’s backyard-built sailboat.

farther and more clearly on water. Nurturing his love for radio by experimenting with his father’s shortwave, Chadwick listened intently to ghostly stations and signals fading in and out, feeding his nascent fascination with “beeps and numbers.”

This early immersion in beeps and numbers (and static) would decades later form the backbone of Chadwick’s vibrant and unpredictable Ironing project. (So named because he stacks all his arcane gear on a teetering ironing board to perform.)

Chadwick, in tongue-in-cheek fashion, defines Ironing’s sound as “party violence,” a lighthearted poke at the usual stern-faced poses of much harsh noise. But also an apropos description of audience reactions to an Ironing set.

When asked what food would correspond to his sound, Chadwick says it would have to be something spicy, like a chili — a vegetarian one.

We’ve attempted to break Ironing’s sound down to three essential elements. Feel free to verify in the flesh this week.

Part I: Chaos flow radio

Chadwick has a phrase he uses to explain his Ironing technique: “chaos flow.”

“It’s kind of like surfing, where you can kind of steer but you can’t control what’s pushing you,” Chadwick says.

Chadwick’s unique sound comes in part from meshing live sounds from radio stations in the cities he performs in, paying special attention to international-language and dance stations.

“With radio you can’t really choose,” Chadwick says “There’s a lot of chance operations going on.”

Part II: Slapstick

turntablism

“Slapstick like the comedy style, it’s a descriptive element but not an overall description,” Chadwick says.

Meshing his harsher sounds with a lighthearted attitude, Chadwick can be seen at shows balancing a record player on top of his head while smiling beatifically, or throwing two records on top of each other and letting the needle jump and scratch an unhinged tune.

Chadwick also tends to place objects like his beer, lit candles or even a glittery high-heeled shoe on the spinning discs, always pleasantly surprised by what sounds the hopping needle conjures. Typically a distressed noise will ensue as he places these objects on the vinyl grooves, like sacrificial offerings to the noise-gods.

this a song, did he plan this?’” Miller says. “It seems all improvised to me.”

Part III: Field recordings and tapes

The final piece of Ironing’s collaged symphonies are tapes. Whether field recordings, damaged loops of ambient noise, prerecorded commercial cassettes or tapes he recorded himself, for Chadwick these are chunks of texture that feel natural and often personal.

Typically, Chadwick will not only mix these tapes into his sound, but he often pitches them faster or slower as the mood takes him.

To Chadwick, the field recording tapes in particular make for a somewhat autobiographical element, enhancing the sonic chili’s flavor with captured instances that remind him of certain memories in his life.

“These are moments from my life and my environment and things that I associate with a time and place, and now it’s being recontextualized with all the rest of the sounds,” Chadwick says. “It brings the meaning from those times and places with it for me.”

With a noise artist like Chadwick — who often veers into deranged dancehall and fried freestyle — encapsulating his sound under one genre descriptor is tricky, but Miller finds this type of experimental work quite … folky.

“I love it,” Miller says. “Seeing these musicians using instruments in the way that they’re not supposed to be used or just experimenting — this is truly folk music.”

Reflecting that typical folk music has been done and redone for decades, homogenizing the sound, Miller cites blues firebrand guitarist Bo Diddley building a cigar-box guitar as a pioneering step for this alternative universe of folk. Reimagining instruments and re-creating very specific sounds, to Miller, is current folk music.

When he was 9, Chadwick’s family decided to up and sell everything and move aboard for a year. Taking to the seas, four family members lived on a 28-foot sailboat, cruising up to Canada, along the East Coast and the Bahamas before eventually settling in Melbourne, Florida, then known as Palm Bay.

Chadwick says that aboard their floating home, he discovered that radio waves traveled

“If I practice, I’ll practice techniques, but not ever try to recapture exactly what happened a certain way when I was practicing, because it’ll never happen the same way twice,” Chadwick says.

Longtime friend of Chadwick and fellow Gainesville noise-enjoyer Chris Miller, who first met Chadwick back when he sported a beard that protruded several inches off both sides of his jaw, says that he couldn’t believe that he really practiced any of his sets.

“You know, when you see it you’ll be like, ‘Is

Ultimately, it was 2005 — when Chadwick had the opportunity to attend the International Noise Conference in Miami — when he realized what he wanted to do with his sound.

Ironing’s first live show was in Orlando later that same year at the now-mythical Peacock Room in Mills 50.

In satisfyingly nostalgic (and also not) fashion, he’s set to bring the noise back to Orlando two decades later, playing Thursday at new DIY venue My Sister’s House along with Putrid Fauve, Shania Pain and other noise lovers. music@orlandoweekly.com

LOCAL RELEASES

In NYC rock & roll lore, it was CBGB and Max’s Kansas City. In modern-day Orlando, the indie and rock scenes have home bases like Will’s Pub. But for the city’s true-school hip-hop scene, it’s the Commission Beer Chamber. Like Will’s, the Commission isn’t simply a joint that specializes in its kind of music, but a cornerstone and patron saint for it. Local musicians don’t just perform at these hotbeds, they hang there. You’re just as likely to be drinking among them as you are to see them on the mic. These special community spaces are the nucleus of scenes, and no one knows it better than the artists themselves. The latest testament to that is the Commission Beer Chamber’s new mixtape.

Now on its third volume, the Beer Chamber Mixtape series is an official bottling of what goes down at the Commission. Coordinated by the bar’s commish himself, Benny “Mister Blanco” Colón, with the help of MC Shinobi Stalin and producer My Good Phelo, the Beer Chamber Mixtape Vol. 3 is a sweeping roundup of Orlando hip-hop talent.

Across 23 tracks, the contributors list includes E-Turn, Wahid, Sean Shakespeare, Soy Is Real, Niko Is, Marco Dupa, Shinobi Stalin, My Good Phelo, The God J Biz, Midaz the Beast, Cydney Poitier, My Grain 5K, Javy XI, AGE, RedRum, Art West, Chris Belcher, DH, Millatron, Gimprella, Terse, Block Forever, DJ Doo Wop, Juni Ali, MC White Owl, Kurious, Smooth B, Bombeardo, DJ Twenty Dollar Julio. DJ Mega, Str8 Paper, Katie Burkess, Roland Simmons, Rion Smith, DJ Jaymob, CreativAngel, Lyes Papparazzi, Wilfredo, Manny Ferrer and of course, Mister Blanco himself. Of this lineup, Colón says, “All are regulars and fam of The Commission.”

In NYC rock lore, it was CBGB and Max’s Kansas City. For Orlando’s trueschool hip-hop scene, it’s the Commission Beer Chamber. Local musicians don’t just perform at this hotbed, they hang there. It’s a cornerstone and a patron saint

Taken together, the mixtape is a tight compendium of Orlando rap. Curated and comprehensive, it’s probably the best one-stop snapshot of the city’s roots-minded hip-hop scene right now. Making the collection even more exclusive is the fact that it’s not a basic compilation but a collection of all original tracks, which says a lot about both this scene and the Commission Beer Chamber as a cultural institution.

“Growing up in NYC in the ’80s and ’90s and being a hip-hop head, I was spoiled,” says Colón.

“Being able to have access to the OG mixtapes from DJs like Doo Wop, Tony Touch, Ron G, DJ Clue just to name a few … then opening this bar, getting to meet all these Orlando MCs and producers and them becoming like family and a huge part of the Commission’s success, I felt it just made sense being able to showcase the

enormous talent we have right here in the O.”

As the creative manifestation of The Commission, the Beer Chamber Mixtape series is at once the sound of a spot, a family and a scene. Volume 3 now streams everywhere.

Twice

K-pop has broken down cultural barriers to become an integral part of the musical landscape in North America, and all-woman group Twice are among the vanguard acts. But Twice differs from other K-pop ensembles with their playful and carefree synth-pop sound. While groups like Blackpink and Le Sserafim lean into intense and often left-field sounds, Twice remains bright and bubbly. The nine-member group is innovating with production on their “This Is For” tour with a 360-degree stage, creating a fully immersive performance that can be seen from every angle. The tour promotes the group’s 2025 releases: This Is For, Enemy and Ten: The Story Goes On. The latter album features solo songs from each of the nine members, marking a decade-long run of hits. Ali Wong

Multi-talented comedian, actress, director, writer and producer Ali Wong is getting back to her

roots with a stand-up tour that stops in Orlando this week, part of a run that covers much of the U.S. and Europe. You probably know Wong best from Beef, the Emmy-winning series she starred in and executive-produced for A24/Netflix, but her stand-up work is downright ferocious. Recent (well, fairly) special Single Lady garnered her a Golden Globe and is a multifaceted and wickedly funny examination of divorce, being

a single mom and venturing back out onto the ol’ dating scene — an excellent place to start bingeing her comedy output. Wong’s evening performance is all but sold out and the matinee show is well on its way, so forewarned is forearmed. 4 p.m. & 7 p.m., Walt Disney Theater at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Magnolia Ave., drphillipscenter.org, $58$266. — MM

Meet Puffin!

Puffin (A589865) is a 1-year-old stray that was found running in traffic at night by a good Samaritan.

Why is her name Puffin? When she first got here, she was extremely fearful and aggressive. She would growl and “puff” air out loudly, to keep people from touching her. Though she was scared, she had a strong heart and a big attitude, and she would not back down easily. So the name stuck.

This is Puffin now, about a month later: an incredibly mushy and affectionate dog. Gentle, intelligent, and extremely treat-driven. Puffin will melt into your arms if you let her — she is amazing with people, and even better with other dogs. She’s not shy, and loves to play like the puppy she is. She doesn’t know any commands yet, and is still learning how to walk on a leash.
