The Pulse nightclub sign was taken down by the city, the Florida Legislature concluded their annual session without a budget in place, The Ren theater reopened in Ivanhoe Village, and other news you may have missed last week.

» Pulse nightclub sign taken down for construction of memorial

The towering sign for Pulse nightclub, the site of the 2016 deadly mass shooting in Orlando, was taken down last week by the city as part of the ongoing process to build a permanent memorial honoring survivors and the 49 shooting victims at the site. The city took over the project of building a memorial from the disgraced (and now-dissolved) OnePulse Foundation in 2023. The city has already selected a construction and design firm, revealed some design elements and announced plans to break ground on construction this summer, in time for the 10th anniversary of the tragedy. According to the city, the sign is being stored in an environmentally controlled storage warehouse at an undisclosed location for safekeeping. The Pulse nightclub building itself will also be demolished beginning this week to make way for the memorial. The memorial is being funded in part by city funds, county funds, some financial support from the state and any private donations the city manages to raise. (Although the city can likely expect tighter purse strings this time around, after OnePulse broke the community’s trust by raising millions of dollars from private donors for a memorial and museum project that they ultimately abandoned.)

» Orange County leaders gave the OK to a resolution opposing a proposed ICE facility

The Orange County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution last week that voices opposition to the conversion of any industrial warehouse in Orange County into a federal immigrant detention center. The resolution — symbolic in nature, so without any real teeth — comes in response to reports that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is planning to purchase an industrial warehouse near Lake Nona to convert into a detention facility, as part of a broader multibillion-dollar effort that’s playing out nationwide. “Our responsibility is to protect the health, safety and well-being of our residents, preserve the integrity of our local land use process and ensure that major decisions affecting our community are not made without transparency, coordination or respect for local government,” Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings said last Tuesday. “Orange County is committed to public safety, to the rule of law and to treating every person with dignity, and this resolution makes clear that any proposal of this nature is incompatible with our communities, values and priorities.”

» The Renaissance Theatre reopened in Ivanhoe Village Ivanhoe performing-arts hub the Renaissance Theatre Co. passed its final inspections with the city and formally reopened its Princeton Street headquarters last Friday, March 13. The theater company’s home was shuttered last autumn due to permitting issues with the city, but they soldiered on nomadically, putting on their Halloween event Nosferatu and drag night OTR at venues around the city. In late November, they found a temporary home on Church Street downtown in the former Fringe ArtSpace, with the city granting them a temporary lease running through March. To mark their reopening, the Ren announced a “Homecoming” slate of activities, including “Off the Record: Hannah’s Version” on March 18; a Homecoming Reception March 20; the promisingly titled “Re-Renaissance” on March 20 and 21, and a “Myki on Myki” RuPaul’s Drag Race watch party on March 21.

» Orange County reported a 50 percent drop in drug overdose deaths

Drug overdose deaths in Orange County have declined more than 50 percent since 2021, according to newly released data from the medical examiner’s office. While 251 people died of fatal drug overdose in Orange County in 2025, that’s down 52 percent since 2021, when the county saw 528 deaths, most involving fentanyl. “Every life lost to overdose is one too many,” Dr. Thomas Hall, a substance use disorder treatment provider, acknowledged in a statement. Still, he said, the county plans to continue to build on their existing prevention work, expand clinical services, and “work closely with our law enforcement partners to ensure residents have the support they need to recover and thrive.” Hall, a treatment provider of more than 20 years, serves as director of Orange County’s Drug-Free Coalition and has helped shape the county’s overdose prevention strategy. The county government has leveraged funds received through national legal settlements with opioid manufacturers to expand opioid addiction treatment programs for high-risk populations

and increase availability and distribution of the opioid reversal medication Narcan/naloxone, as well as fentanyl test strips. The decline in overdose deaths here in Orange County fits within a trend seen throughout most states.

» Florida Legislature concluded the 2026 session without a budget The 60-day annual legislative session that began with a handshake snub in mid-January ended last Friday with a whimper, without a budget and without the traditional hanky-drop ceremony. Despite the GOP’s supermajority and Gov. Ron DeSantis’ push for aggressive conservative bills, House and Senate leaders clashed over several issues and haven’t entered formal budget negotiations. House Speaker Daniel Perez, R-Miami, and Senate President Ben Albritton, R-Wauchula, have agreed to return in mid-April to finish the spending plan for the next fiscal year, but they haven’t agreed to much else. Out of nearly 2,000 bills that were filed by Florida lawmakers for the 2026 session, just 234 were approved by both chambers and head to Gov. DeSantis for his signature. Besides the budget, lawmakers will also return to the Capitol in April for a special session to redraw congressional districts. That session has already been called by DeSantis. Another session on property tax cuts, a priority for DeSantis, is likely to be called as well. But DeSantis also saw some of his top priorities during this session falter, including his desire to ban mandates for vaccines for children entering public schools and to impose regulations on artificial intelligence companies. The Senate passed both bills, but they didn’t make it through the House. DeSantis chided Perez and House leaders for not taking up those measures, as well as for pushing cuts to Everglades restoration projects and eliminating funding for the State Guard.

Public records obtained by Orlando Weekly show an out-of-state think tank supplied talking points to push passage of Florida’s latest anti-union bill

Florida lawmakers passed legislation this week that could provide a deadly blow to many of the state’s public sector unions, just three years after the enactment of another significant union repression law.

The legislation (HB 995/SB 1296), likely to be approved by Gov. Ron DeSantis, changes union election rules, guts voluntary recognition rights for most public employees, and increases financial penalties for public employee strikes.

Now, emails obtained by Orlando Weekly through a public records request show that a right-wing think tank, based out of state, was prepared with materials to help ensure its passage.

Records show the Freedom Foundation — a “free market” think tank headquartered in Washington — emailed talking points for the Florida legislation to its Republican House bill sponsor, Rep. Jenna Persons-Mulicka, just one day ahead of its first committee hearing in late January. Metadata show the document was created by Maxford Nelsen, the Freedom Foundation’s director of research and government affairs.

“Here are some talking points on the three provisions that we care about, as well as the one pager we are using to lobby in favor of the bill,” wrote Christian Cámara, a lobbyist for the Freedom Foundation, in a Jan. 28 email to Persons-Mulicka’s aide.

The talking points emphasize that the bill “would make government unions more accountable to both taxpayers and the public employees they represent.”

But accountability isn’t their only goal. The Freedom Foundation openly states on its website that the group sees government unions as “a root cause of every growing national dysfunction in America.” And the Freedom Foundation calls itself a “battle tank … battering the entrenched power of left-wing government union bosses.”

Records previously obtained by Orlando Weekly show the Freedom Foundation has been pushing additional reforms to Florida’s union-related statutes since

2023 through a collaboration with the Mackinac Center for Public Policy — another right-wing think tank based in Michigan — and later, with the help of the governor’s office.

Rep. Persons-Mulicka did not respond to a request for comment from Orlando Weekly on her collaboration with the Freedom Foundation ahead of publication.

Dr. Rich Templin, a longtime political director and lobbyist for the Florida AFLCIO, said he believes the email exchange with the Freedom Foundation just offers more proof that these anti-union bills making their way through the Florida Legislature are a solution looking for a problem.

“It is, once again, proof positive that none of this — none of this — has anything to do with Florida,” Templin told Orlando Weekly Wednesday, shortly ahead of the bill’s passage in the Florida House.

“Consistently, since this legislation first started showing up in 2011, the public employers have not asked for it. The public employees have not asked for it. Nobody

representing more than a million workers and retirees.

Entering the ‘no-right-to-exist’ era

A controversial 2023 Florida law also opposed by the Florida AFL-CIO — and backed by the Freedom Foundation — was the first, major successful attempt in decades to undermine unions representing most of the state’s local and state government employees.

It was based on a 2011 anti-union law enacted in Wisconsin, later introduced in a similar form in Florida. And it took 12 years for it to finally pass.

By that time, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — who sparred with teachers unions over precautions during the COVID-19 pandemic — was in the executive office.

“Florida has become a billionaires’ playground. If you’ve got billions of dollars and a think tank and you just want to have some fun with public policy that impacts hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people in some cases, you come to Florida,” said Templin. “And it was Ron DeSantis

‘Florida has become a billionaires’ playground. If you’ve got billions of dollars and a think tank and you just want to have some fun with public policy that impacts hundreds of thousands of people, you come to Florida.’

in Florida has asked for this legislation,” Templin said. His organization is the state’s largest federation of labor unions,

in Wisconsin, eliminated the option for most public employees to pay union dues through a paycheck deduction — the most common way for them to do so. While removing that simple means of payment, it also required more members to pay dues. Under the law, public sector unions with a dues-paying membership of fewer than 60 percent of the workers they represent are forced to petition for recertification elections annually. Police and firefighter unions (which generally support Republicans for office) are exempted. Since paying union dues is already voluntary under Florida’s right to work policy, reaching that 60 percent threshold — when you can still benefit from union representation without paying for it — can be a tough ask. Florida has become increasingly unaffordable for middle-class families, and public sector workers generally earn less than what they could earn doing similar work in the private sector.

Since early 2024, state records show at least 123 public employee unions have been decertified (effectively dissolved) by the state Public Employees Relations Commission as a result of the new rules, gutting union representation and eliminating union contracts for more than 69,000 workers.

Hundreds of maintenance, utility and other blue-collar workers at the University of South Florida in Tampa, for instance — who first unionized in 2004 — saw their jobs privatized after their union was dissolved in early 2024. All of the state’s adjunct faculty unions, formerly affiliated with the faculty arm of the Services Employees International Union, are also gone.

Most of the unions decertified so far haven’t been decertified due to members voting the union out, but rather because the union didn’t petition the state for a union election. That’s a step that’s necessary to prevent the state from automatically dissolving a union with less than 60 percent membership.

After the 2023 law was passed, many unions scrambled to figure out how to comply with the law and prevent this from happening. More than 100 didn’t succeed.

Teachers unions, however — the perceived target of the law — have mostly survived the 2023 law’s new requirements. Thousands of teachers, full-time university and college faculty, and other school staff represented by the Florida Education Association have overwhelmingly voted in favor of keeping their unions since its passage. They haven’t lost a local union yet.

who set the table and invited everybody to dinner.”

The 2023 law in Florida, like the one

FEA president Andrew Spar, a former music teacher, believes this year’s bill is the Freedom Foundation’s latest attempt to get rid of them.

“In 2023, the Freedom Foundation tried to go after teachers’ unions—and failed. Now they are pushing SB 1296/HB 995, bills they helped write, in yet another attempt to make it harder for workers, including educators, to fight for a better life,” Spar told Orlando Weekly in a statement.

Indeed, this new legislation would go a step further than the 2023 law, in what Florida professors Robert Cassanello and Katie Rainwater (both union members) recently described as the “no-right-to-exist” era for Florida’s unions.

Under this year’s legislation, most public employees will face a steeper threshold to either form, recertify or decertify their union — with carve-outs maintained for unions representing “public safety” workers such as police and firefighters.

It’s been altered a few times.

The initial proposal, as filed, would have required a simple majority of eligible voters (51 percent) to vote in favor of unionization, instead of just a majority of workers who vote.

An amended version, approved by both the House and Senate chambers, would require at least 51 percent of workers to vote in favor in an election that sees at least 50 percent voter turnout — signifying a form of harm reduction for unions.

Essentially, if there are 100 workers trying to form a union, at least 26 would have to vote in favor of unionization for the union to prevail under the bill passed. Under the original version, 51 workers would have had to.

Supporters of the bill argued the change from current law was necessary to ensure the union is sufficiently supported by a majority of the workers it represents.

“We have example after example where a bargaining unit represents hundreds or thousands of employees and only a handful show up and vote, and vote in favor of continuing the union,” Rep. PersonsMulicka, argued Wednesday on the House floor. “That is a problem, and that is the problem that we are now seeking to solve with this legislation.”

She cited three examples of recent union recertification elections involving graduate assistant workers, Broward County employees and University of South Florida faculty, where voter turnout was below 5 percent.

All three examples were highlighted in

an “one-pager” drafted by the Freedom Foundation, according to public records obtained by the Weekly . Cámara, the Freedom Foundation lobbyist, emailed this one-pager to Persons-Mulicka’s office ahead of her bill’s first hearing in January.

“In preparation for tomorrow’s committee hearing, I wanted to provide Rep. Persons-Mulicka with some information regarding public sector union elections held recently,” Cámara wrote. The one-pager, he explained, would provide “the most extreme examples” of cases where union elections “have been decided by a tiny minority of employees rather than from broad input or consensus.”

Persons-Mulicka’s legislative aide quickly responded, “Thank you Christian!” just 10 minutes later. Then, shortly after, “Also sending to Martin’s staff,” she wrote, likely referring to Sen. Jonathan Martin, R-Fort Myers, who sponsored the legislation in the Senate.

“Cool thanks! I just sent it to them too, so that should be good,” Cámara replied.

The legislation, notably, would also get rid of voluntary recognition as an option for public employees seeking to form a union (instead of going through an election process). It would also increase the financial penalties for strikes by public employees from $20,000 per day to $40,000.

Public sector strikes are already illegal under the state Constitution, and as far as our reporter is aware, there hasn’t been a strike by local or state government workers in Florida in decades.

Notably, Persons-Mulicka’s bill — sponsored by Republican Sen. Jonathan

Freedom Alliance. Gov. DeSantis and the Trump administration also expressed their support.

“I commend @GovRonDeSantis and the Florida leaders working to ensure unions truly have the support of the educators they represent,” wrote U.S. Department of Education secretary Linda McMahon, in a post on X. “This commonsense reform, SB 1296, reins in fringe political activism from teacher unions and refocuses them on accountability to teachers.”

War on teachers unions

While teachers unions have been framed as the target of the bill — as a frequent punching bag of the political right — other public employees, such as school bus drivers, traffic safety technicians, custodial workers and healthcare workers, would also be affected.

More than 150 public employees, including self-described Republicans, traveled up to Tallahassee to speak against the bill, according to the Florida Phoenix.

“As a Republican, I believe passing this bill will be detrimental to our entire family and workers across the state,” said Ellery Farmer, a retired firefighter from Polk County who testified against the bill during a hearing in the Senate. Lisa Bush, a nurse of 25 years at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, said the bill just offers “more intrusion” and “more red tape.” She described herself to senators as a “proud Republican.”

About 27 percent of Florida’s public sector is unionized, according to federal data, compared to just 3.4 percent of the state’s

‘The public employers have not asked for it. The public employees have not asked for it. Nobody in Florida has asked for this legislation.’

Martin in the Senate — gained the backing of Florida’s education commissioner, a known ally of the Freedom Foundation and its spinoff association, the Teachers

private sector workforce. Unlike local and state government unions, however, private sector unions are regulated by federal labor authorities.

Freedom Foundation lobbyist Rusty Brown, a former “union avoidance” consultant and former policy advisor in the U.S. Department of Labor under the first Trump administration, admitted to a panel of Florida senators this month that his group’s goal is to reduce or eliminate public sector unions in Florida.

He wasn’t shy about it when pressed.

The Freedom Foundation, founded in 1992 as the Evergreen Freedom Foundation, is an affiliate of the corporate-funded State Policy Network, a sister organization to the American Legislative Exchange Council. It’s received hundreds of thousands of dollars in the past from billionaire-funded groups such as the Adolph Coors Foundation, the Bradley Foundation, the Ed Uihlein Family Foundation and the Charles Koch Foundation.

They’ve also pushed for anti-union reforms in other states as well, most recently in Idaho.

The final step

Democrats in the Florida Legislature uniformly voted against the Florida bill in both the House and Senate. But they’re outnumbered by Republicans more than 2 to 1. Eight Republicans in the House joined Democrats in opposition to the bill in a 73-37 vote, while five Republicans did so through a 20-14 vote in the state Senate.

“As part of a union I understood the benefits that came with representation,” said Republican Sen. Corey Simon, a former NBA basketball player, during a Senate hearing on the bill earlier this month. “I understood the process of how the team wasn’t looking out for the player.”

Simon was one of the five Republican senators who voted no, joined by GOP Sens. Alexis Calatayud, Ileana Garcia, Ed Hooper and Ana Maria Rodriguez.

Democrats, meanwhile, pointed out constitutionality issues flagged by a Senate staff analysis of the legislation, which noted the bill could infringe on Florida workers’ collective bargaining rights under the state Constitution, in addition to equal protection and free speech rights.

“This bill undermines those freedoms — constitutionally protected freedoms — simply because there are powerful outsiders, outside interests, who do not like the outcome when union workers vote,” said Sen. Carlos Guillermo-Smith, D-Orlando, speaking on the Senate floor. Sen. LaVon Bracy Davis, D-Ocoee, described the bill as an “unconstitutional trainwreck” and “mean-spirited.”

The bill now heads to the desk of Gov. DeSantis for final approval.

THE MAN WITH THE GOLD RULES

Fandom explosion MegaCon is back in Orlando, this time with the singular Mr. T

MegaCon is back in Orlando this week for four full days of celebrities, cosplay, vendors, panels, meet-and-greets and pop-culture overdrive. There are some impressive guests this year — from John Cena to Gillian Anderson, John Carpenter to Liv Tyler — but one of the names that jumped out to us most was 1980s icon Mr. T.

Yes, The A-Team and Rocky III star is bringing his tough-but-fair love to MegaCon this weekend, his first time at the massive fandom fest.

Born Laurence Tureaud, Mr. T grew up in a family of 12 on welfare in Chicago, Illinois. He tells Orlando Weekly that his faith helped guide him out of poverty.

“When I was 9 … I drew a picture and showed it to my mother,” Mr. T says. “I said, ‘Mama, one

of these days I’m gonna be big and strong … I’m gonna buy you a beautiful house, and I’m gonna buy you pretty dresses.’ And my mother hugged me and started crying, saying, ‘If that’s the Lord’s willing.’”

He lived up to the promise he made to his mother, taking up boxing and football throughout school.

In 1975, he enlisted in the army. Following his discharge, Mr. T became a bouncer at the Rush Street nightclub Dingbats. It was there that he picked up the gold-jewelry-clad, mohawktopped Mr. T persona. A series of tough-man competitions brought him into the spotlight, eventually leading to notoriety in acting and pro-wrestling. (And even his own Saturdaymorning cartoon.)

The 1980s powerhouse legally changed his last name to “T” and adopted the “Mr.” to command the respect his father and brothers never received. More than 40 years after his career first took off, Mr. T continues to spread his spirit and serve the community.

While he portrayed Herculean roles like B. A. Baracus in The A-Team and antagonistic characters like Clubber Lang in Rocky III, Mr. T explains that “deep inside, I’m an old-fashioned mama’s boy. I love my mother, and I always talk about her with the highest regard.”

Mr. T’s soft side is evident in his work with children’s hospitals. He explains that this opportunity has had the greatest impact.

“I went to [the hospital], the kids got excited and I prayed for them,” Mr. T says.“I worked with the Starlight Foundation and the Make-A-Wish Foundation with little kids who were sick or terminally ill, and they requested to meet me. All the characters that these kids could have seen, they wanted to meet me, the tough Mr. T. That’s when my life changed.”

He recalls children who toured production sets, captivated by his iconic look. “I would drive them around in the van, let them play with my jewelry, let them play with my mohawk,” Mr. T says, “I said [to them], ‘I’m honored that you want to meet me.’”

Thursday-Sunday, March 19-22

Orange County Convention Center

9800 International Drive fanexpohq.com/megaconorlando $28-$600

He explained that his spirituality helps him stay removed from the intense characters he portrayed.“I can break a board, because I studied martial arts,” Mr. T says. “Then I can go to the hospital, and a mother asked me to hold her baby, to pray for her baby.”

At MegaCon, Mr. T is ready to meet his fans and show them who he is beyond the screen. “They start off as a fan,” Mr. T says. “Then they get a chance to really get to know who I am and what I represent.”

The multi-generational connection to Mr. T’s work is prominent at events like MegaCon.

“Since the ’80s, they grew up with me,” Mr. T says. “I’m looking forward to meeting them as much as they look forward to meeting me. They might say, ‘Oh, Mr. T, you’re so frightening in Rocky III, but my father told me you’re a nice guy.’ It’s special. My career has sort of gone full circle.”

Mr. T states several times that having people know his name is humbling, and it is an honor to have a platform. “I try to use my status for the good, you know,” Mr. T says. “I would go to the homeless shelter, quietly bring food and wouldn’t make a grand deal. Watch me do it quietly.”

For Mr. T, the celebrity he has gained allows him to perform acts of kindness. “I can feed the hungry. I can lift someone’s spirit. I can give them hope,” Mr. T says.

A defining moment of Mr. T’s career came when his message reached kids from backgrounds like his own. “I grew up in the ghetto, but I never robbed nobody. I’m a respected person now,” Mr. T says. “I’m sending a message to the kids who are going through poverty: You don’t have to rob to get over it. Do the right thing.”

Even as he gears up for four days of MegaCon action, Mr. T is putting in the work to make the experience memorable.

“I’m preparing myself for when I come to Orlando,” Mr. T says. “You won’t see me say, ‘Oh, I’m tired of these people. I need a break.’ No, I’m going to be rested for them. I want to love them. I want to lift these spirits. I want to give them a big hug. I want them to never forget the moment that they met me.”

Fans can see Mr. T at MegaCon Thursday through Sunday and say hello, get a hug, score an autograph, snap a selfie or get a pro photo. If you miss out on the latter potential Christmas card opportunity, we pity you, fool. arts@orlandoweekly.com

May Pang’s photos give viewers an insider’s view of John Lennon’s 1975 Disney World jaunt

Did you know that one of the most monumental moments in the history of music happened right here at the Most Magical Place on Earth? At the height of the rock & roll revolution, college dropout May Pang bluffed her way into a secretarial job at ABKCO Music & Records (managers of the Rolling Stones and Apple Corps) and soon found herself serving as personal assistant to Yoko Ono and John Lennon. During the couple’s 18-month “Lost Weekend” separation, Pang became Lennon’s companion and collaborator, documenting iconic moments with her 35mm Nikon camera — including the December 1974 dissolution of the Beatles at Walt Disney World’s Polynesian Resort.

Pang will appear at Winter Garden’s Grotto at Stoneybrook West (thegrottoatstoneybrookwest.com) this Friday through Sunday with The Lost Weekend — The Photography of May Pang, an exhibition of photographs from that Disney trip, among other intimate images of rock royalty. She recently spoke with me via video chat about growing up in 1960s Manhattan with Chinese immigrant parents, her documentary The Lost Weekend: A Love Story (available on streaming), and much more.

Her lifelong love of music:

Since I was a kid, music was always my life; it was my lifeline. People always say [that], but music really saved me in the sense of, there was always discord in my house. My father thought he was still living in China, constantly arguing with my mother. My mother [was] getting used to the world here, that women had some rights. Even though I’m a non-musician, I understood music so well that John was always surprised. We’d talk about music all the time.

Learning analog photography in Central Park as a teenager:

To this day, I don’t say I’m a photographer; I don’t do sessions [but] I’m very honored when

professionals come up to me and say, “No, you’re a photographer.” I was always known to carry my camera, and I think about it now, and I’m feeling the weight of it. … I just would take my camera on leisurely days and just wander around, and if I thought I saw something interesting, I would just take it. That was my whole premise, just on the spur of the moment.

Working for John and Yoko:

I was a personal assistant, secretary, you name it: You need to go to the grocery store, you need to go and help buy clothes with them, you need to set up interviews. You name it, I’ve done it. I don’t know why they chose me, but I got chosen, and they kept me on.

I ended up going to England [for the shooting of the 1972 Imagine film] and John said to me, “Oh, I need you to bring something back.” It was his Rickenbacker black and white [guitar] that he used on Ed Sullivan. So I brought that back to America, [and] to avoid paying the taxes I said it was mine. The [customs] guy said, “Can you play it?” and I wanted to be honest, because if I said yes and he made me play it, that would not have been good. So I said,“No, I really don’t know how to play it yet,” and he let me go.

John’s delay signing paperwork dissolving the Beatles:

One of the one of the major reasons was he was so freaked out at knowing that he’d be the only [former Beatle] living in America at that time and be responsible for a million dollars’ worth of taxes. … Everybody thought that Yoko was part of this. Yoko was not involved in any of John’s managing his life until John went back [in 1975]; she had nothing to do with it. It was the two lawyers and John and myself in the room [at the Polynesian]. Julian was off in the other room, and when John signed he had to coax me into [photographing] it. … I didn’t even know if I had a picture, because the room was dark and I didn’t have a flash.

Lennon’s post-Beatles reunion with Paul McCartney:

It was like nothing happened. … Paul and Linda showed up unexpectedly [at a recording session] and the door opens and I look up and I went,“Oh my God, John, Paul and Linda!” And he

looks over and goes,“Hey,”like nothing. In January [1975], Paul and Linda came by for a visit, and John said, “What’s your next project?” He goes, “We’re thinking of going to New Orleans to do our next record,”and I saw John’s eyes just lit up. … The day after, John [asks] “Do you think I should write with Paul again?” I am telling you, my neck was like The Exorcist. I said,“Of course you should, because as solo artists you’re good, but when the two of you get together, your writing is beyond that.” He sort of sat there and went, “Yeah, you’re right.” I knew that if I had gotten John down there, there would have been something.

Lennon at Disney’s theme parks:

In early 1974 we went to Disneyland in California. We were there because we were working on the Rock and Roll album, and this was the first time [John] was going to see his son after three years. I’m making arrangements of what we can do. What’s the happiest place on earth for a young kid? It wasn’t about John anymore, it was really about [doing] something for Julian. … He was a father first, in this case. The second time around, we were going down to Florida, and again we said, “Where can we go? Let’s go to Disney World, because now that’s a newer version of the Disneyland.”

We were only there for like two days, so we really spent more time doing the rides. John loved being in the Haunted Mansion — all the holograms were just beginning at that point, and he enjoyed all that. He even enjoyed It’s a Small World.

We were sitting in the monorail and going back to our room. John and Julian were sitting opposite me [and] this father and son came on at the next stop. They sat right behind me, and the father leans over, and says,“Son, I hear there’s a Beatle that’s here at Disney World.” The little kid goes, “Who is it, Dad? Which one?” He goes, “I think George Harrison.” I started laughing, and John’s looking across from me, motioning like, why are you hysterical? The father and son heard us laughing and cackling, [and] he’s looking at us not seeing John at all. I asked him, “Why aren’t you [recognized]?” [He said] “Because everybody is so interested in going to the next ride, they’re not interested in seeing me.” skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

KNEAD TO IMPRESS

The Baker’s Son is proof that good bread and pastries run in the family

The Valerios are a multigenerational family of bakers who owe a large part of their success to the late Victor Valerio Sr. and his wife, Milagros. The husband-andwife tandem brought their baking talents from the Philippines to the United States and, in 1979, opened the modest Valerio City Bakery in San Diego County. It would become, fittingly, Valerio’s 1979, which then led to a string of namesake bakeshops — Valerio’s, Valerio’s Bakeshop, Valerio’s Tropical Bake Shop — to open on the West Coast, into Hawaii, over to Chicago and across the border to Toronto, all led by the children of Victor and Milagros.

Now, the next generation, led by Jun Valerio, is spreading the gospel of Pinoy pastry-making eastbound and down into Texas and Florida. With the Baker’s Son, Jun proudly continues what his grandparents started. In fact, Jun’s son, Arvin, manages the gleaming white Kissimmee shop, marking a fourth generation of rolling-pin wizards in the Valerio family. I gotta say, the space’s mishmash of patterns, furniture and lighting is eye-catching — but it works. And wonders are worked inside the kitchen, where kneading commences every day at 4 a.m. Three hours later, folks line up for poofy,

crumb-coated pandesal buns (available hot or bagged) and peanut-crusted twisted donuts called bicho-bicho ($3.50 for three). But the girl behind the counter insisted we get our hands on some crispy turon (99 cents) before they ran out, which they did about a minute after I bit into the deep-fried, lumpia-like pastry filled with plantains and jackfruit.

As good as the turon was, the savory lumpia filled with ground pork ($7) is the kind of offering that separates this Baker’s Son from the ones in Texas and Jacksonville. Yes, there’s a whole menu of Filipino fare that lends credence to the Kissimmee outpost’s roster of breakfast and lunchtime snacks. That lumpia, served with a sweet chili sauce, was one of the best renditions of the fried Filipino rolls I’ve had in a very long time. And the beef empanada ($3.50), resembling the glove of a boxer more than a crimped half-moon, was a heavyweight pastry that also knocked us the eff out. The filling of ground beef, carrots, diced potatoes and raisins was of a wetter consistency — “like a Sloppy Joe,” said my dining comrade — while the pocket’s flaky texture didn’t come at the expense of its durability.

Breakfast menu items like longsilog ($12),

THE BAKER’S SON

centered around two sweet and seasoned longanisa patties sitting atop garlic fried rice, with sunny-side-up egg, sliced tomato and cucumber, can really be enjoyed any time of day. And that includes the bacon, egg & cheese ($8) sandwich. Tocino, a sweet, fruity, garlicky glaze, caramelizes the bacon stuffed inside the pandesal bun, while the hashbrown was a nice surprise.

It’s no secret that sweet notes, particularly in meats, are very much characteristic of Filipino cuisine. Even the sliced steak inside the Fili bistek sando ($9) — a Philly cheesesteak by way of Manila — is marinated in soy sauce and calamansi to give it a subtly sweet and tangy kick. The exception came in the form of popcorn chicken ($7), where tamarind-based sinigang lent the addictive bite-sized nugs their sourand-savory pucker. Calamansi, BTW, is offered in juice form ($5), and it’s always a go-to favorite of mine, though there are plenty of milkshakes, coffees, teas and signature drinks that draw a lot of attention. Soft-serve ice cream ($4), too.

I had googly eyes for the cream- and strawberry-filled brioche pastries ($5) sitting in the display case next to the checkout register. I couldn’t resist ordering one, even after all the sweet and savory goods I’d shoveled into my greasy trap. I should’ve known that the only one who could ever reach me, was the son of a baker man.

Imperfect Women — Elisabeth Moss, Kerry Washington and Kate Mara star in an adaptation of Araminta Hall’s novel about gal pals whose friendship is rocked by an unimaginable tragedy. Invincible — Season 4 finally introduces us to the grand antagonist of the piece: Grand Regent Thragg (voice of Lee Pace), a vicious despot who will sink to any depth of brutality

Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat — Season 2 of the reality hoax show takes its cues from Succession, with the transfer of power at a hot-sauce company panning out at a corporate getaway that’s actually a carefully scripted stunt. This time, a temp named Anthony is the mark. Will he figure out the whole thing is a put-on, or did that possibility go out the window when he failed to recognize a real company would have long since outsourced his job to AI? (Prime Video)

The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel — Late guitarist Hillel Slovak is the central figure of a documentary that revisits the early days of the now-ubiquitous frat-funk band. Wouldn’t it be funny if viewing was blocked in California? (Netflix)

LEGEND … (WAIT FOR IT) … ARY

John Legend brings an intimate evening of songs and stories to Orlando

When John Legend brings his “An Evening With John Legend: A Night of Songs & Stories” tour to Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, audiences can expect more than a traditional concert. The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter is trading arena spectacle for an intimate evening that blends stripped-down performances of his biggest hits with personal stories from throughout his life and career.

Legend says the concept for the show actually began with an unexpected collaboration. “Well, it all started with Audible, the company that does the audiobooks and podcasts and things,” Legend tells Orlando Weekly. “And they started this series called ‘Words and Music’ where they encouraged artists to create a performance, a live performance, where we told whatever story we wanted to tell along with playing songs from our career or whatever inspired us.”

For Legend, that invitation sparked the idea for a show that would feel almost autobiographical — part concert, part storytelling.

“I decided I would create basically like a little autobiography, but with all the music that’s influenced me over the years and tell stories about my own songs and inspirations behind them and just a lot of my life story that you can tell in about two hours of time,” he explains.

The first performance took place in a cozy setting far removed from the massive stages where Legend usually performs. “I performed it at Ronnie Scott’s, which is a little jazz club in London,” he says. “I loved doing it so much that I just wanted to do it more and take it on the road.”

That early experience cemented the appeal of the stripped-down format for the singer.

“I’ve been periodically through the last few years doing a version of that show all over the world, and I love doing it,” Legend says. “It’s so much fun. I love the connection that I feel with the audience. I love the intimacy of the experience of me just being by myself on stage and talking about some of my most vulnerable

moments, some of the moments that people may not know about my career and my life.”

While Legend is known for performing in arenas and large venues around the world, he says the atmosphere of this show is completely different. “It’s so beautiful, honestly. I feel really connected to everyone in the room. I can see everyone’s faces,” he says. “There’s a lot of quiet moments where you can hear a pin drop in the room and I’m sharing a lot with them.”

That intimacy also changes how audiences experience songs they may have heard countless times before. In the acoustic setting, Legend revisits hits from throughout his career with a fresh perspective. “Performing them acoustic, stripped down, gives them a new spin as well,” he says. “These songs are what they are as we’ve written them, and we wrote them at a moment in time and we all grow, we all evolve over time.”

Revisiting older songs can also bring up different emotions years later.

“Songs I wrote 20 years ago, I’m in a different place emotionally than I was then,” Legend says. “But I still love going back to those songs and connecting to that time in my life. When you’ve gone through more life experiences, every song hits differently.”

The Florida leg of the tour is especially meaningful to the singer for personal reasons. “I have family down in Florida, so I have family members that will be at the show,” Legend says.“I’ve always had such a great reception throughout Florida, whether it’s down in Miami or in Central Florida and then out in North and Duval County.”

Because the show includes personal reflections on his career and life, Legend hopes audiences leave the theater feeling inspired by the journey he shares on stage. “I talk about the ups and downs in my career,” he says. “I talk about the struggle to be heard and to achieve a kind of goal that I set for myself in my career, and the ups and downs to that.”

He also reflects on the challenges he faced growing up and the experiences that shaped him as an artist.“I talk about the adversity I faced even when I was young, some of the issues that we dealt with in my family,” he says.

“I would love it if people walked away thinking, ‘I have this dream, whatever it is, and this show is making me inspired to go for it,’” he says. “To know that even when I faced difficulty, I could try to overcome those challenges and keep working toward the dream that I had.”

LOCAL RELEASES

Orlando’s Mike Levin has enough laurels to kick back. Beginning in the 1990s with bands like Shyster and Sunday Morning Revival, to 2000s-2010s band The New Lows, to current band Curtains — his music spans four decades here. Apparently, just luxuriating ceremoniously in the role of scene warhorse isn’t good enough. Even with Curtains still ongoing, Levin’s already showing creative restlessness. He recently debuted new project Turtleneck Collective in a January show and now he’s about to unveil its debut release. In Turtleneck Collective, the songs are written by Levin but played by a revolving, star-studded cast of Orlando notables. “I see it as less a band and more me recording songs and getting friends to come and record on them,” he says. “The live version could be just me or whatever recording buddies who can make it or depending on the show context.”

If that sounds a little open-ended, it is. And it’s by design. “Fluidity challenges my inclination to control everything,” says Levin. “There are elements of improvisation and spontaneity of both presence and absence of players and sounds. It allows for more experimentation and genre ambiguity.”

On March 21, the Turtleneck Sessions EP is released on historic Orlando label Figurehead Records. It’s a debut that has more kinship with his turn-of-the-millennium work in Sunday Morning Revival than with the punk-leaning material Levin has done in the quarter-century since. Ambling somewhere between indie and Americana, these four unassuming songs have simple acoustic bones with purposefully minimal flourishes of twang, strings and keys. It’s a record that’s reflective, vulnerable and comfortable in being so.

To launch the record, Levin will present Turtleneck Collective in full force as a septet at Saturday’s release show (9 p.m. March 21, The Imperial, $7). All show proceeds go to Florida Immigrant Coalition. Turtleneck Sessions will be available exclusively on 10-inch vinyl at first. Streaming on Bandcamp will follow soon.

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

Joe Bataan: Unjustly, the full span of iconic Spanish Harlem bandleader Joe Bataan’s talent is somewhat inside baseball. But the King of Latin Soul has a peerless oeuvre that embodies, and even anticipated, some of the best grooves to come out of the 1970s. His music is an effortlessly creamy synthesis of Latin, soul and funk that foreshadowed disco and rap. Even late in life, Bataan’s sound, though beautifully steeped

in heritage, has remained forward-thinking. He proved his enduring relevance when he returned in 2005 to break a decades-long recording hiatus with the revelatory Call My Name LP, which at least put him back on the indie radar. Bataan will come rolling deep with a 12-piece band. (7 p.m. Thursday, March 19, The Social, $45)

Cavity, Thrull, Bunaand, Skeletizer: 1990s Miami band Cavity are one of those underground legends whose street cred has become almost mystical, with a cult that’s only deepened since they originally disbanded in the early 2000s. Not only was their exhilarating blend of sludge and hardcore a critical smash, but their ranks have spun off an elite procession of bands including Floor, Torche, Black Cobra and Holly Hunt. Since reforming in 2015, Cavity have risen again to both enjoy the spoils of legacy and create new music. Befitting such Florida history, the opening lineup of Thrull, Bunaand and Skeletizer is a prime slice of Orlando’s heavy-music vanguard that would be a boss-ass bill all on its own. (7 p.m. Friday, March 20, Will’s Pub, $17-$20)

The Helena Collective: The Three Tenors ruined everything. As much as they popularized opera, they bogarted the spotlight for men. But there’s a reason the term “prima donna” is in the mainstream lexicon and “primo uomo” is not. The local all-female Helena Collective are reclaiming the focus through not just their singing but their feminist perspective. This concert — titled The Tender: From Eve’s Footsteps — is a hard reset on the story of the biblical OG woman, told through the female gaze via songs, poetry and narration. Expect to be both enchanted and enlightened. (7 p.m. Sunday, March 22, Timucua Arts, $30)

R&B (and girl-group) legend and ultimate diva Diana Ross returns to a familiar Orlando stage this week. Mz. Ross hasn’t been in town since she took part in 2023’s Residency Festival at the Dr. Phillips Center, but she’s back at the Phil this week to make up for lost time on her “Diana in Motion” tour. The 81-year-old singer is in fine form on this latest jaunt, giving audiences the hits — including disco smash “Upside Down,” as heard lately on Stranger Things — and incredible stagewear. Whose Live Anyway?

Some of the faces of improv-comedy TV show Whose Line Is It Anyway? are heading to Orlando as part of a United States tour. Whose Line was an unlikely hit in the wholesome and innocent 1990s (by comparison, anyway), launching careers like Wayne Brady’s and Colin Mochrie’s. The quartet of show regulars Ryan Stiles, eternally dapper Greg Proops, Jeff B. Davis and Joel Murray set up shop on the Hard Rock Live’s stage to riff and mug like their lives depend on it, often acting on audience (that’s you!) prompts. Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival

Three days of art, sunshine and people-watch-

One of the nation’s oldest outdoor art fests will transform Central Park and surrounding Park Avenue into a sprawling openair gallery featuring hundreds of artists from around the country. More than 1,000 artists applied to participate this year, with work on display spanning sculpture, painting, photography, jewelry, glass, fiber art, mixed media and more. Beyond the booths, the festival features live music in Central Park and a free Children’s Workshop hosted by local museums and art centers. Attendees can also explore the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit, showcasing thousands of pieces created by Orange County students — a celebration of our city’s next generation of artists. 9 a.m., Central Park, North Park Avenue and West Morse Boulevard, Winter Park, wpsaf.org, free. — Juanita Olarte

Something Rotten!

Little Radical Theatrics presents Something Rotten! at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts’ Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater, continuing a recent local run of adventurous reinterpretations of Shakespeare’s plays. Set in the 1590s, the Tony-nominated musical comedy follows brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom as they struggle to write a hit play while living in the shadow of, yes, Will Shakespeare. When a soothsayer predicts that the future of theater will involve singing, dancing and acting all at once, the pair attempt to create the world’s first musical, leading to an absurdist adventure filled with show-stopping numbers and over-the-top humor. Thumbs may very well be bitten insultingly. 8 p.m. Friday–Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday, Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Homecoming Reception

In a surprising bit of good news on an otherwise unlucky Friday the 13th, Ivanhoe Village performing-arts hub the Renaissance Theatre Co. announced last week that they had passed final inspections with the city and would reopen that very day. And in fact they did in high style, with a Homecoming Week series of special events. The glittering gem in that comeback crown will likely be Saturday’s gala reception and fundraiser. Hercules (A589184) and Poseidon (A589185) are two sweet seniors that were surrendered due to neglect. As we all know, a bonded pair have shared a home and a life, and have a special relationship to the point that when separated, it affects them physically. Hercules and Poseidon definitely meet this criteria. They are absolutely inseparable; they sleep together, walk together, eat together. When they were taken out of their home, they had been caged in the same small kennel, locked inside a hot, dark garage. We don’t know what they went through in those 10 years, but we do know that they need one another to survive. Understandably, both these boys are extremely cautious around new people. In spite of their larger-than-life names, Hercules and Poseidon are extremely shy and take their time to warm up to anyone. When they perceive a threat, they stand shoulder to shoulder and bark, backing each other up. They need each other, and they’re going to need a lot of patience, kindness and time.

Orange County Animal Services is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. every day except Wednesday, when it’s open 2-6 p.m. For more information, please call 407-8363111 or visit ocnetpets.com.
