On Nov. 7, we published a news story about Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd tweeting about the police department’s active-shooter scenario training and claiming “the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun,” a day after a gunman shot and killed 26 people at a church in Texas. @Theo Workman If only those Sandy Hook children had their own AR-15s , they’d be heroes in middle school right now. But they didn’t, so they got to die. @Bob Martinausky From my point of view and especially considering the police unfortunately cannot be everywhere all the time and sick and evil people are unpredictable, I will always have my CCP and carry! @Sarah Ann His comments are not based on fact and are not constructive. Hill, Stuart pull slim victories in Orlando City Council races while Gray coasts to re-election: Orlando voters decided to send all three incumbents back to City Hall in last week’s municipal elections. Orlando Commissioners Robert Stuart and Regina Hill pulled off slim victories in District 3 and 5 respectively, with Stuart receiving 51 percent of the vote and Hill narrowly avoiding a run-off election by getting 50.2 percent of all ballots against six challengers. Candidates needed a majority of the vote (50 percent) to avoid a run-off election in December. Meanwhile in District 1, Commissioner Jim Gray coasted to another term on a comfortable margin, beating his two challengers by garnering slightly more than 53 percent of the vote.

Rick Scott calls for prayers when asked how to prevent mass shootings: Gov. Rick Scott called for more prayers when asked about ways to prevent mass shootings days after a gunman killed 26 people at a Texas church because that has been working well so far. Scott made the remarks during a Jacksonville news conference after backlash to an earlier tweet where he said he was praying for the Texas victims instead of proposing possible concrete solutions like better background checks, limiting access to assault weapons or anything during the Pulse mass shooting. “The most important thing we have to do is we need more prayer, first off, rather than less,” Scott said when asked if Republicans would finally take action beyond prayers. “We need to pray for all these families. … I believe in the Second Amendment. I just wish there was no evil in the world.”

FEMA plans to relocate Puerto Rican hurricane evacuees to Florida: Florida emergency officials increased their activities last week after the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that it would offer Puerto Ricans still homeless after Hurricane Maria a short-term relocation to mainland Florida or New York, according to the News Service of Florida. Hotel costs will probably be provided by the federal agency to about 3,000 people. More than 140,000 Puerto Ricans have evacuated to the Sunshine State since Maria hit the U.S. territory two months ago because the majority of the island remains without power.

Opioid crisis taking toll on Florida’s children: State child welfare workers said more than 4,000 babies were born addicted to opioids in Florida last year during a hearing last week in front of lawmakers. That’s an increase of 1,000 percent over 10 years in the number of infants born with neonatal abstinence syndrome. Brian Hayes is delightfully devious as both defendants, and John Segers does double duty as a perverse pair of deliriously demented judges. Double Jeopardy, which runs through Nov. 19, is CFVA’s first production at Central Florida Community Arts’ church auditorium on Ivanhoe. “The intimate setting of the CFCArts black box allows us to connect and interact with our audiences more closely,” said Smith-Levin. “It helps us to continue to make classical vocal arts feel more approachable for our audiences.” In this small space, these powerful soloists would probably be heard just fine over the lone pianist (Sarah Tellier, David Foust) without their crackling microphones, but music director Nishaa Carson coaxes rich harmonies from the unamplified chorus, and supertitles are projected lest you miss any of the amusing English-language lyrics. CFVA’s next events are Cocktails and Carols on Dec. 9 at Luma on Park, followed by Handel’s Messiah Sing-Along on Dec. 10 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in St. Cloud. They’ll collaborate on the second with Space Coast Symphony and Opera Del Sol, demonstrating that cooperation among competitors is conceivable, even when dueling divas are involved.

’m not ashamed to admit I’m a junkie for Iranian cuisine. I’ve been fueling my insatiable addiction for koobideh kebabs, faloodeh and bastani for the better part of a decade, and at less than a handful of joints around the city. So when Zora Grille in Altamonte Springs unexpectedly shuttered earlier this year, it left Shiraz Grill on Westwood Boulevard near I-Drive as the sole Persian joint in town. Too far I’d think to myself when a pang for succulent cylinders of ground beef, frozen rose-essenced vermicelli and pistachio ice cream hit. But when I spotted the marquee of Shiraz Market (no relation to Shiraz Grill) midway through a serendipitous drive in Longwood, I screeched my tires and hard-turned into a parking spot in the 427 Plaza. The heady waft as I opened the door only added to the sensorial overload of the scene inside: Freezers on the left and in the back full of Farsi-scrawled tubs, cans and bottles; shelves stocked with every imaginable spice, pickle and oil; bags of rice piled high on the floor; boxes with fresh produce on tables; and ravenous diners with their heads buried in styrofoam containers.

They’re just as superb as their beef counterparts, but when that chicken is stewed and laid atop barberry-jeweled saffron rice at this family-run Persian for zereshk polo ($9.99), it’s easy to see why the dish is a common sight at Iranian weddings. The starchless, sticky-free rice, by the way, is incredible and a bit of a pain to make. You’ll be, ahem, hard-pressed in finding a better sandwich than the ones served up at the Longwood outpost of Tampa’s AJ’s Press. Mexican bolillo and telera rolls are weighty enough to hold the porky mélange of smoky ham, smokier Cantimpalo chorizo, and slow-roasted pork in the Cuban; a less filling ham and cheese option is just as solid. Cajun and Crescent City eats come to South Eola thanks to Bernard Caramouche and Larry Sinibaldi of Two Chefs fame. From the gumbo to the smoked trout beignets, the food here is nomworthy of NOLA. Po’boys are fashioned from bread shipped in from Gambino’s in Metairie (get ’em with a side of chicken and sausage jambalaya); the shrimp and grits are damn-near perfect; and the Cedar Key clams in a white wine sauce with pancetta are worth getting extra bread for. It’s not easy to find a better New Yorkstyle pie in the city. Proprietor and pizzaiolo Joe Roberti takes great pride in his dough and in-house fermenting approach, which results in a crust that’s thin and bubbly, crisp yet yielding and, above all, flavorful. No matter the pie – simple margherita, or comforting short rib with caramelized onions, or fanciful foie gras – you won’t be disappointed. Those with a sense of the adventurous will dive headlong into the seafoodheavy options at this West Colonial Chinese restaurant. There are live critters like crystal crab, lobster, baby pomfret, striped bass, eel and more for the taking (and you should def take the crystal crab and have it prepared in garlic sauce), as well as plenty of Hong Kong-style fare. One of the most important, yet subtle, sub-plots is the clash between Lady Bird’s father and mother, played well by Tracy Letts (perhaps better known as the author of Killer Joe and August: Osage County) and Laurie Metcalf, who is likely to generate some supporting-actress Oscar buzz. But the film is packed with countless other supporting gems, from Lucas Hedges as Lady Bird’s boyfriend to Odeya Rush as the “hot friend” to Beanie Feldstein as the uncool, ugly duckling, to Stephen Henderson as the high school drama teacher. (The latter’s muddled underdevelopment is one of the film’s few flaws.) Most memorable perhaps, as the Catholic school’s principal, is 87-year-old Lois Smith, who cut her acting teeth with James Dean in 1955’s East of Eden. (And the Kazan connection is complete.) “I wish I could live through something,” Lady Bird remarks to her mom at the beginning of the movie. As the next 90 minutes flicker by, she does live through something. It’s called life, and it’s a great thing to sit back and observe.

The director they brought in to salvage this picture started hemorrhaging followers after his exwife accused him of being a serial philanderer and gaslighter. The male lead is an admitted titty-grabber with uncomfortably close ties to Harvey Weinstein (not to mention his role in shielding his own brother from allegations of sexual assault). Meanwhile, the female lead is a Zionist fanatic who can’t be trusted with her own Twitter account, lest she tweet out another thumbs-up to her murdering buddies in the Israeli “defense” forces. Hey, Warner Bros. publicity department: You wanted to go into show business! Amazingly, those are all only secondary considerations when it comes to Justice League, which became the target of actual expectations after the surprise success of Wonder Woman had WB bigwigs crying “We got one!” like Annie Potts in the original Ghostbusters. Has Joss Whedon managed to wring a decent flick out of the raw material Zack Snyder shot, which was allegedly “unwatchable?” I’m not holding my breath, especially with Ben Affleck taking to the media weeks before release to clarify that the finished product still has Snyder’s “DNA” – which sounds like the kind of explanation you give after a country music concert is shot up by a guy whose father was once on the FBI’s most wanted list. Predictions: Superman still gets less than 10 minutes screen time in total, and the Flash is only slightly more tolerable than Jar Jar Binks. (PG-13) Roman J. Israel, Esq. Denzel Washington plays against type as a nerdy, principled lawyer whose suddenly upward career trajectory

is tied to a lapse in personal ethics. Funny that there would be a cause-and-effect relationship there, but it is a movie after all. Variety says the film has a pleasingly ’70s vibe but “meanders.” Hey guys: What do you think the ’70s were like, anyway? (PG-13) The Star Sony Pictures Animation says its latest feature shows a bunch of adorable animals playing a crucial role in “the greatest story ever told.” Wow, we get to watch a woodpecker drive the nails into Christ’s wrists and ankles? Actually, no, given that the movie’s interpretation of said Greatest Story starts and ends with the nativity. So we’ll see a donkey, a sheep and a dove follow the fabled star to the equally fabled manger, just like cute critters did in every quasi-blasphemous bit of musical fanfiction you ever got to sing at your youth fellowship’s regional retreat. Except back then, you weren’t envisioning Tracy Morgan as a camel. Straight up humpin’, y’all! (PG) Wonder This generation gets its own Mask as a boy with facial deformities enters the publicschool system for the first time. Leading roles for Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson as the kid’s parents indicate a high treacle count. Not convinced? Three more words: “with Mandy Patinkin.” (PG) ALSO PLAYING: Pottersville Everybody from Judy Greer to Ron Perlman to Christina Hendricks is in this under-the-radar dramatic comedy, in which Michael Shannon portrays a small-town businessman who gets mistaken for Bigfoot. “Is this the weirdest movie ever filmed in CNY (Central New York)?” asks Syracuse.com. The latest national name imported by OYG Presents was New York’s Shana Falana, a Team Love Records band that operates on the brawnier side of the dream-pop realm. While many of their contemporaries float among the clouds like seraphim, they ride through them like a jet on a sound that moves with thrust and ballast. Even though they swim in thick shoegaze and psych currents, they do it with punctuation. And they achieve the heavens with melodic grandeur rather than just ambience and ether. Moreover, they’re a small band that really know how to maximize their live presence. For just a twosome, they manage tons of atmosphere through pedals, loops and smart craft that allows a Jackand-Meg setup to conjure the size and stratosphere of Crocodiles. That same allout flair that allows them to punch above their weight sonically also spills over into their visual aspect. With low-tech projections and a sophisticated filmic sense, they were backdropped with great movement, pattern and color. It’s simple but inspired presentation that elevates a concert into an experience. Also this night was a fresh look at Orlando’s the Welzeins. Although I’ve covered what’s long been known as one of the city’s mightiest duos plenty, this was my first encounter with them as a recently expanded trio. Saying goodbye to that raw two-piece sinew is hard, but this beefedup array allows them newfound cogency in their apparent pivot toward the heavy.

Now, the chopping riffs of their new stoner doom grooves drop with more tonnage and kill. The freewheeling heroics of guitaristsinger RJ Nordstrom are thankfully still intact, they just ride on the chassis of a full rhythm section now, making their rock bona fides all the more manifest and unequivocal.

THE HOTELIER AND ALEX NAPPING, BACKBOOTH, NOV. 6

Simply Massachusetts band the Hotelier are one of the flagship bands of the emo revival that’s in full moon right now. On the spectrum, though, the Hotelier pack a bit more than many of their peers, sometimes painting beyond with greater nuance and dimension. But even when it abides by emo convention, the music’s got honesty, craft and commitment. And sometimes you just can’t ask for more than that. So bleed on, sad boys. Fun fact for Orlando heads: The Hotelier originally went by the phonetically similar name the Hotel Year, which bears a conspicuous resemblance to My Hotel Year, themselves an emo act that was one of Orlando’s most beloved indie bands. The

Hotelier’s Wikipedia page even details this coincidence in a sort of amusingly catty way wherein the band changed their name because they “did not think the name was any good and there was a band called My Hotel Year which they did not want to be confused with.” But looking forward, perhaps the band most worth watching is Austin’s Alex Napping, who made their Orlando debut. Because of its track record this decade as a leading antenna in the field, ambitious label Father/Daughter Records – a bicoastal operation whose eastern foothold is in Miami – has emerged as one of the most distinguished farm leagues in the indie rock world in recent years, with very notable picks like Diet Cig and Vagabon. And Alex Napping are one of the latest stars on the Father/Daughter roster with probably one of the best albums heard this year in Mise En Place. Their guitar pop is a shimmering study in melody and mood that boasts sparkling pop aptitude and interesting dynamics – and it plays great on record. Live, however, the usually defining voice of frontwoman Alex Cohen was often so slight that it only seemed to contend in their quiet moments, which is unfortunate since the band’s bigger strokes are their more distinctive ones. She finally stepped up midway through their set, though, just in time for standout song “You’ve Got Me.” Cohen’s got a voice of character, it just needs to be dialed in and unleashed for them to fulfill their considerable potential. But when you have recordings that already show songwriting of exceptional promise like Alex Napping, all else is just a matter of time. baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

Before “alt-country” became the provenance of pop-star ensembles like Mumford & Sons and even the qualifier “alt” just seemed sketchy, cosmic cowboy Jay Farrar was setting the twangy, melancholic template with his Son Volt. Though still indelibly associated with his first band, countrypunk godfathers Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt has been going for far longer – since 1995, in fact – and 10 albums in, Farrar’s work speaks for itself. Lydia Lunch - the singular black widow of American underground arts, letters and music – has been making a yearly stop in Orlando like clockwork for the past few years. The peripatetic performer took Art in Odd Places by storm in 2015, and showed up the Genitorturers last year, but this year, fittingly, it’s her name at the top of the marquee. And she’s coming through flanked by her Retrovirus ensemble, a trio of freak lifers – Weasel Walter, Bob Bert and Tim Dahl - that is Teenage Jesus-level lethal live. The filthy foursome trawl through Lunch’s heady discography and indulge in some top-shelf covers on stage, though you gotta dodge Lunch and Walter’s “engagement” with the audience. If you have even more than a passing interest in the underground in all its various facets, know that Lydia Lunch was patient zero for an appreciable percentage of it. Come take your punishment. – MM

Central Florida’s most successful podcast duo, Tom Vann and Daniel Dennis, are able to make a living off of their “A Mediocre Time With Tom & Dan” show – along with their censored version, “A Corporate Time With …” on WTKS 104.1-FM – a feat they couldn’t accomplish without their legion of fans. This weekend, the guys give back to their patrons with the Bad at Business Beer Fest in Sanford. Offering free samples of beer from more than 40 breweries, attendees don’t even have to pay a cover charge – hence the “Bad at Business” title. Japanese avant-garde percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani is redefining the term “neverending tour” in starkly DIY terms. Forget backstage catering and extravagant riders, Nakatani jumps in his RV and legs it around the U.S. for several months out of the year to put budding experimental drummers through their paces as part of his ad-hoc Gong Orchestras. To see Nakatani work his percussive magic on his own is entrancing enough – as anyone lucky enough to have attended last year’s performance at Avalon can attest – but to see him also achieve telepathic unity with a different group of musicians in each city – with just gongs – is nothing short of stunning. Communal art at its finest. – MM

Puerto Rican superstar Marc Anthony is back for his yearly visit to inject some salsa in Orlando’s veins, though this year it might be a bit more melancholic. The island is still reeling as it stumbles to recover from Hurricane Maria and evacuees flee to places like Central Florida. From the mainland, Anthony and other Puerto Rican artists have been raising money and calling out the feds when need be. I had a blast hosting Savage Lovecast Live at San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts. Audience members submitted questions before the show, and I consumed a large pot edible right after the curtain went up and then raced to give as much decent sex advice as I could before it took effect. Back when people primarily met at parties, bars, clubs, etc., we established baseline physical/chemical attraction before learning someone’s name and long before a first date. (We eyeballed ’em, we said hello, we made a moment’s small talk.)
