Spring 2019 Program Guide: After-School Classes April 15, 2019 to June 7, 2019 Dear Parents/Guardians, Eton School is excited to offer its Spring After-School Classes. These carefully selected classes enrich and extend the learning that happens in the school day. We are delighted to offer a Circus Art Class by Synapse Circus Center and a ballet class taught by the Emerald Ballet Theater for Pre-elementary students. For our Lower Elementary students, new this Spring are a cartoon drawing class by Young Rembrandts, and Snapology’s Brick Art History and Design class. Popular classes like Karate, Soccer, Carpentry, Sewing are back as well. Spring classes are eight weeks with the exception of Monday classes which are seven, and Friday which are six. Classes meeting less than eight weeks are indicated. An important note when registering your child for a class: All classes have grade requirement information. Your child must currently be in the grade listed to attend the class. The grade requirement helps ensure that all the students receive the best class experience. Registration Policy • Processed online (including payment) via Eton School’s website. • Opens Monday, April 1, 2019, at 7:00 a.m. • Closes when a class wait-list is full or on April 19. • Offered on a first come, first served basis. • When a class is full, a wait list is created in the order received. • Open places in class rosters are filled from the wait list in the order received. • Upon completion of registration and payment, a confirmation email is sent to the person registering the student. If it does not arrive, please check junk mail/clutter folders. • If registering for an open spot from the wait list, the registration must be completed within the stated time frame, or else the place is offered to the next name on the wait list. • If an enrollment minimum is not met, a class may be canceled after the registration deadline, and a refund is issued. All participants are informed of the class cancellation at the minimum of a week before the start of the class. • No refunds are given for withdrawing from a class after April 19. Tips for Quicker Registration • Log in to Eton School’s website before registration opens to complete the parent/guardian and student fields automatically. • Choose and rank the desired classes before registration opens to quickly pick them once you are on the registration page. • Complete all registration before the 10-minute limit expires. If you do not complete your registration with payment within the time frame, the spot is released. WEBBY Dance Company offers a fun and exciting Gymnastics class. Each one begins with stretching and warm up exercises and includes age-appropriate instruction in beginning tumbling and balancing skills, obstacle courses and exciting routines to age-appropriate music. Students explore different Gymnastics stations such as a balance beam, tunnel, tumbling mat, mini trampoline, rhythmic ribbons and other creative equipments. WEBBY Gymnastics help students build their flexibility, coordination, memory, concentration and self-confidence, all in a positive atmosphere!

Exposing students to a world of dance that encourages creative thought and builds self-esteem. Each class studies movement, balance and a variety of dance styles from around the world. Students develop their flexibility and grow in their artistic ability as we create dance. Ms. Alina Spektor enjoys encouraging dancers of all levels to reach their maximum potential. Both boys and girls are welcome! Dance equipment is provided throughout class, and at the end of the session, parents are invited to a mini-performance. This is the ninth year that Ms. Alina is offering the class at Eton School! Creative Dance, movement, music, and performing are her passion for over seventeen years.

Synapse Circus (www.synapsecircus.com) is a recreational circus school devoted to developing the ability of its students to express themselves through circus arts. The company is founded on the concept that regardless of age, size, or gender, everyone can enjoy the world of circus! The class is a novel and exciting way to explore different body movements, and designed to focus on developing a student’s large motor and social skills. All this is done through age-appropriate skills such as throwing, catching, simple tumbling, jumping, balancing, and object manipulation that encourages and fosters imagination. The students are encouraged to work together as a group and individually. Teacher to student ratio is low, so each student receives plenty of individual attention.

Transportation is all around! Cars, buses, trains, and airplanes are all important for communities and the world to stay connected. In Snapology’s Planes, Trains, and Automobiles program, little learners explore the importance of transportation and build models of cars, trains, boats, and more using Kid K’NEX®. Most importantly, students experience important social interactions while working with a partner and learning with the group. Get ready for your child to come home with a whole new set of transportation facts!

Emerald Ballet Theatre (www.emeraldballet.org) is excited to offer a ballet class. Our professional and caring instructors introduce students to the joy of movement and the beauty of dance in a developmentally‑appropriate way. Basic ballet technique, improvisation, choreography, and musicality are included. Students develop flexibility, coordination, strength, creativity and confidence! Students can also opt to participate in the Spring Fling stage performance in costume at the Northshore Performing Arts Center on May 19, 2019.

Join Karate-X this year for awesome classes that are disciplined, challenging and fun! Students learn and practice Karate skills with punching bags, breaking boards, blocking drills, kicking targets and more. Karate-X has been teaching in the Puget Sound for 19 years, with a Martial Arts program specifically designed for preschool and elementary students. Our professional instructors know how to motivate kids while building self-confidence and discipline. Belt rank testing is held at the end of each session, giving students goals to aim for and recognition of their accomplishments. For beginners who have never tried Karate, to athletes of any sport, Karate-X challenges and grows bodies and minds!
Nature Storytelling (6 Weeks)
Grades P4 and K Fridays (April 19, 26; May 10, 17, 31; June 7) Cost: $112.50
Time: 3:15–4:00 p.m. Number of Students: 12
This is a storytelling and science class that allows students to explore their natural world. Each week focuses on a different plant or animal from the Northwest. Class begins with a song and then a spoken story, usually from a Native American nation. Then two or three books, both fiction and nonfiction, are read aloud. Short science lessons about the plant or animal being studied that week are presented between stories. Through storytelling, music, movement, and science, students learn to connect with and understand our Northwest plants and animals, which often live in our own backyards. At the end of each class, students receive a fact sheet from the lesson to take home, so that they can share what they have learned with their family.

Young Rembrandts Drawing: Class I

Young Rembrandts introduces a variety of artistic lessons that challenge and excite students. Projects include a wonderfully illustrated flower pot that captures the spirit of the spring season, and a cuddly teddy bear drawing that introduces our students to basic figure drawing. Students with a curiosity for nature love our bird bath and snail project. These art projects help strengthen the art and compositional skills of students.

Students learn the basics of the game of chess. They start with how every piece moves and the goal of the game, and receive puzzles to help them learn the piece. There is plenty of practicing with the coach as well as peers.
Kinderbots (7 weeks)

Students explore the world of robotics as they build simple models that teach the fundamentals of robotic design. Whether learning about sensors while building drills and magic wands or discovering ways that gears and pulleys create movement while building helicopters and robotic dogs, students have a great time.

Lower Elementary Classes
Edgar Degas, a famous artist, once said, “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see”. As students learn about different types of art and the periods they were created, they are interpreting what they see and creating their own works of art using LEGO® bricks. Through Snapology’s interactive Art History class, students learn about Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Van Gogh’s Starry Night, Wright’s Falling Water, and more!
Chess

Time: 3:20–4:05 p.m. Number of Students: 16
In this class, students learn tactical chess ideas like pins, forks, and discoveries. Students work on puzzles learning how to checkmate the opponent in one or two moves and work on tactics. Students watch and learn from short master and grandmaster games. There is a lot of chess-playing time too.
Kids Carpentry (7 Weeks)

Carpentry is a hands-on toy building experience designed to teach students practical woodworking skills with an emphasis on the safe use of hand tools. We create unique opportunities for students to construct fun and exciting projects while empowering them to become independent thinkers—building confidence, self‑esteem and a repertoire of practical skills that last a lifetime. At the end of the session, each student goes home with at least two projects that they made and painted by hand.
Lil Ballers (7 weeks)

In the LocalHOOPS Lil Ballers program, students learn the fundamentals of basketball, sportsmanship, teamwork and healthy habits while practicing skills and having fun. In each class students explore games in a fun and nurturing environment with group activities, small skill stations and games such as “sharks and minnows.” Special theme days are held where students receive prizes based on participation.

Does your child have a great sense of humor? If so, your child will LOVE our Young Rembrandts Cartoon class. Students learn to personify inanimate objects by breathing life into the sun and moon while transforming them into funny cartoon characters. A humorous bird feeding sequence teaches visual and sequential story telling. We’ll also create drawings that feature colorful and expressive forest animals.

Sewing by Made Sewing

Jump into the exciting world of sewing! In this class, students use both their hands and handy machines to make oodles of fun projects that may include emojis, pajamas, aprons, messenger bags, zipper totes, infinity scarves, monsters and more. On the first day of class, the instructor surveys the young sewists to come up with projects that are both fun and challenging for their experience level and interest. No experience necessary and all supplies, as well as fun, are provided.
