Winter 2019 Program Guide: After-School Classes January 7, 2019 to March 28, 2019 Dear Parents/Guardians, The new year brings the start of our Winter After-School Classes. For this session, we welcome new partners such as WEBBY Dance Company, RepsUp Basketball, Seattle’s celebrity magician Xakary, Kids Carpentry, and Mandarin classes! Popular and well loved classes such as Soccer, Karate, and Sewing are back as well. Winter session is ten weeks long with Monday classes having nine and Friday classes having only eight. The exception is French, which goes through the Spring session with fifteen weeks of class. Please note there are no after-school classes the week of Parent Conferences (February 11-15), and Mid-Winter Break (February 18-22). Registration Policy • Processed online (including payment) via Eton School’s website. • Opens Monday, December 10, 2018 at 7:00 a.m. • Closes when a class wait list is full or on January 11. • Offered on a first come, first served basis. • Wait lists for all full classes are created in the order received. • Open places in classes roster are filled from the wait list in the order received. • Upon completion of registration and payment, a confirmation email is sent to the person registering the student. If it does not arrive, please check junk mail/clutter folders. • If registering for an open spot from the wait list, the registration must be completed within the stated time frame or else the place is offered to the next name on the wait list. • If an enrollment minimum is not met, a class may be canceled after the registration deadline, and a refund is issued. All participants are informed of the class cancellation at the minimum of a week before the start of the class. • No refunds are given for withdrawing from a class after January 11. Tips for Quicker Registration • Log in to Eton School’s website before you register. This automatically completes the parent/guardian and student fields. • Choose and rank the desired classes before registration opens and then quickly pick them once you are on the registration page. • Complete all registration before the 10-minute limit expires. If you do not complete your registration with payment within the time frame, the spot is released. WEBBY Dance Company® is now offering fun and exciting dance classes weekly at Eton School! Our professional and caring instructors will introduce your child to tap, pre-ballet, creative movement, and tumbling. We provide age-appropriate music, fun props, and an action-packed class! Children benefit by building their memory, concentration, coordination, creativity and self-confidence, all in a positive atmosphere. Children learn creative movement and dance techniques across the floor. They dance to their favorite songs while using fun props, like maracas, tambourines, pom-poms, and leis. With over 300 dances in our curriculum, the teacher regularly introduces new and exciting routines to students.

Children love to explore the animal world. In this class, young children discover new species of animals. Each week, the course focuses on a different type of animal. Children read a book about that animal, do related activities and bring it to life using the K’NEX® Organisms and Life Cycles Kits. Students are challenged to invent their own creations that demonstrate new knowledge learned each week. They learn important biology and ecology concepts, practice their critical thinking skills and develop good cooperation and classroom techniques all while having fun.

Enroll your child in a class that teaches valuable life skills, such as basic cooking skills, table manners, making healthy choices, and how to have fun in the kitchen! Students love creating their own meals, and at the end of the class, they participate in a “Cook-Off.” Parents are invited to see the incredible progress their child has made.
Fun with Mandarin for Heritage Families

Mandarin Playground brings its Chinese learning program for Heritage families (children who speak Mandarin at home). The class is theme-based and designed for optimal learning, fun, and effectiveness. It features a unique curriculum developed by researchers in bilingualism that includes interactive learning and themed physical games for total physical responses. Children practice language skills as well as social skills.

Join Karate-X this year for awesome classes that are disciplined, challenging and fun! Students learn and practice Karate skills with punching bags, breaking boards, blocking drills, kicking targets and more! Karate-X has been teaching in the Puget Sound for 19 years, with a Martial Arts program specifically designed for preschool and elementary students. The professional instructors know how to motivate kids while building self-confidence and discipline. Belt rank testing is held at the end of each session, giving students goals to aim for and recognition of their accomplishments. For beginners who have never tried karate to athletes of any sport, Karate-X challenges and grows bodies and minds!

Nature Storytelling (8 Weeks)
Grades P4 and K Fridays (Jan. 11, 18, 25; Feb. 8; Mar. 1, 8, 15, 22) Cost: $150.00
Time: 3:15-4:00 p.m. Number of Students: 12
As a storytelling and science class, this course allows students to explore their natural world. Each week focuses on a different plant or animal from the Northwest. The class begins with a song and then a spoken story, usually from a Native American nation. Then two or three books, both fiction and nonfiction, are read aloud. Short science lessons about the plant or animal studied that week are presented between stories. Through storytelling, music, movement, and science, students learn to connect with and understand our Northwest plants and animals, which often live in our backyards. At the end of each class, students receive a fact sheet from the lesson to take home, so that they can share what they have learned with their family.
Young Rembrandts Drawing

The long winter months can easily lead to boredom or restlessness. Alleviate any creative dormancy with a funfilled Young Rembrandts class! We begin the season with a lesson that teaches our students about simple figure drawing as they create a snowman using basic geometric shapes. Winter-themed lessons like our mittens and penguin drawings will excite the imagination. Illustrations featuring a patterned giraffe and feathery owl will provide a great introduction to drawing animals. All these and more await your budding artist.
Kindergarten Classes Chess (8 Weeks)

In this class, students learn the basics of the game of chess. They start with how every piece moves and the goal of the game. In every lesson, students receive puzzles to help them learn the piece. There is plenty of practice with the coach as well as peers.
Junior Engineers presented by Snapology (9 Weeks)
Grade K Mondays (Jan. 7, 14, 28; Feb. 4, 25; Mar. 4, 11, 18, 25) Cost: $180.00
Time: 3:15-4:00 p.m. Number of Students: 20
Young students in this class build fun and simple models using DUPLOÂŽ blocks. By playing with and manipulating the models, they experience pulleys, levers, gears, wheels, and axles. They learn how to combine these parts to create their machines and allow for their smooth and efficient movement. Children learn a wide variety of scientific ideas, ranging from measurement, to balance, buoyancy and energy. The class emphasizes the use of good teamwork skills. Students are required to do group planning and respect the opinions and ideas of their partners. Classes include free-building time to promote creativity.

Exposing students to a world of dance that encourages creative thought and builds self-esteem. Each class studies movement, balance and a variety of dance styles from around the world. Students develop flexibility and grow in artistic ability as they create dance. Ms. Alina Spektor enjoys encouraging dancers of all levels to reach their maximum potential, and both boys and girls are welcome! Dance equipment is provided, and at the end of the session, parents are invited to a mini-performance. Ms. Alina has been teaching dance at Eton School for nine years. Creative dance, movement, music, and performing have been Ms. Alina’s passion for 17 years.

Kindergarten–Fifth Grade Class French Immersion (15 Weeks)
Grades K, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 Mondays (Jan. 7, 14, 28; Feb. 4, 25; Mar. 4, 11, 18, 25; Apr. 15, 22, 29; May 6, 13, 20) Time: 3:45-4:45 p.m. Cost: $375.00 Number of Students: 15 A bilingual, multicultural education opens doors and minds to the world. Paris Academy Northwest (PANW) offers a French language program for students who wish to get a head-start on French before high school and have fun while learning. Taught by an experienced teacher using a carefully designed curriculum introduces students to new vocabulary with correct pronunciation, the lessons are constructed around five elements (total physical response activities, songs, games, crafts and culture). Groups are organized by language level and age for better interaction.

Art for Kids School is delighted to bring their program to the students at Eton School. As an established after-school multimedia fine art program with a 30-year history of teaching fine art to children, their unique program is designed to provide an opportunity for children to explore and develop confidence in their creativity in a variety of materials. In an ongoing sequential program, students develop skills much like in ballet or piano lessons. Art for Kids School teaches techniques rather than expression. All instructors have fine art degrees and are passionate about art and teaching children. Their philosophy is all children have an innate ability to be creative. The creation of art is a process whereby there are no mistakes. All seeming mistakes can be changed into desirable results. We hope your children will enjoy our program.

WeDo 2.0 strengthens students’ understanding of the eight science and engineering practices, including asking questions and solving problems, modeling, prototyping, investigating, analyzing and interpreting data, computational thinking, creating evidence-based arguments, and obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information. First–Fifth Grade Class Kids Carpentry (9 Weeks)

Kids Carpentry is a hands-on toy building experience designed to teach kids ages 5-10 practical woodworking skills with an emphasis on the safe use of hand tools. Kids Carpentry creates unique opportunities for students to construct fun and exciting projects while empowering them to become independent thinkers, which builds confidence, self-esteem and a repertoire of practical skills to last a lifetime. At the end of the session, each child goes home with at least two projects made and painted by hand.
First–Sixth Grade Class Karate

In the LocalHOOPS Lil Ballers Program, students learn the fundamentals of basketball, sportsmanship, teamwork, and healthy habits while practicing skills and having fun. Sessions are designed for students to explore the game in a fun and nurturing environment. During group activities, students enjoy small skill stations and fun games such as “sharks and minnows.” On special theme days, students receive prizes based on their participation.
Second–Sixth Grade Classes Sewing by Made Sewing (8 Weeks)

Jump into the exciting world of sewing! In this class, students use both their hands and handy machines to make oodles of fun projects that may include emojis, pajamas, aprons, messenger bags, zipper totes, infinity scarves, monsters and more. On the first day of class, the instructor surveys the young sewists to come up with projects that are both fun and challenging for their experience level and interest. No experience necessary and all supplies, as well as fun, are provided.
Discover Magic by Xakary the Magician
Grades 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 Tuesdays (Jan. 8, 15, 22, 29; Feb. 5, 26; Mar. 5, 12, 19, 26) Cost: $320.00

Join Xakary the Magician, founder of the Seattle Magic Academy (and the only magician from the Northwest to ever be voted through by the judges on America’s Got Talent), as he presents his “Discover Magic Purple Wand” magic course. Besides learning some amazing magic tricks, students develop communication skills and build self-confidence. All materials are provided, including custom magic tricks developed specifically for children (but they amaze adults), “secret” file folders that have lots of tips and additional tricks, access to a secret online video vault where students can review everything taught in class, graduation certificate and purple magic wand, and more! Why just read about a magic school when you can attend a real one!
Fourth–Sixth Grade Class Ballers Program (8 Weeks)

The LocalHOOPS Ballers Program is for all students of all skill sets. Sessions are designed in a way that novice students play side by side with more experienced students in a fun and nurturing environment. Fundamentals such as ball handling, passing, shooting and fun games like “poison” and “bump” are sure to be enjoyed. Special theme days are held where students will receive prizes based on their participation.
