We are pleased to announce our offerings for the Winter! The session begins the day we come back from Winter Break (January 6), and ends on March 26, 2020. Classes are for ten weeks, except for classes on Mondays (nine weeks) and Fridays (eight weeks). Please note that classes are not held the week of February 10 (Parent Conference week) and the week of February 17 (Mid-winter break). Most of the previous after-school classes are back with the addition of sewing, coding, and a chess class for older students. We are also happy to partner with Mad Science to bring their educational and fun science program for students in 1st-5th grade and Active Minds for students in 1st-3rd grade. For Pre-elementary (P3-K), our class lottery registration policy is as follows: • Registration for placement in a class lottery opens on Monday, December 2, 2019, at 7:00 a.m. and • •

closes on Wednesday, December 4, 2019, at 7:00 a.m. The person registering the student(s) receives a confirmation email of entry into the lottery for the chosen class. Please check the junk/spam/other mail folders if it is not in the inbox. Each class registration receives a number, which is used in the lottery drawing through a random sequence generator on Wednesday, December 4, 2019. The person registering receives an email notification of the student’s placement either in the class or on the waitlist for the class. For those placed in a class, the email contains a link to an invoice for online payment using a credit card. A payment confirmation email is sent upon completion of paying the online invoice. We must receive the invoice payment by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, December 6, 2019, to secure placement, or else the unsecured placement is offered to a student on the waitlist. Offers of placement to students on a waitlist are completed via an email with a link to an invoice for online payment using a credit card. A payment confirmation email is sent upon completion of paying the online invoice. Payment must be received by 12:00 p.m. on Monday, December 9, 2019, to secure placement, or else the unsecured placement is offered to the next student on the waitlist. If a class is not full by December 10, 2019, registration changes to a first-come, first‑served basis with payment invoices emailed to the person who submitted the registration.
For classes offered to grades K-8, regular registration begins on Monday, December 2, 2019, at 7:00 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis (with a waitlist) and requires payment via credit card to secure a spot at the time of registration. Registration ends on January 10, 2020. All classes have a minimum number of students required, and failure to reach the minimum results in the cancellation of the class. We notify the person who registered of any cancellations, and we automatically process a refund. Requests for a refund by the person who registers the student will only be entertained if made by January 10, 2020. P3–Kindergarten Ballet (9 Weeks) Emerald Ballet Theatre is excited to offer a weekly ballet class. Our professional and caring instructors introduce students to the joy of movement and the beauty of dance in a developmentally-appropriate way. This fun class includes basic ballet technique, improvisation, choreography, and musicality. Students develop flexibility, coordination, strength, creativity, and confidence!

Pre-elementary Classes
WEBBY Dance Company is offering fun and exciting gymnastics classes this Winter. Each class is 30 minutes in length and includes age-appropriate instructions in beginning tumbling and gymnastics skills. Students benefit by building their flexibility, coordination, memory, concentration, and self-confidence, all in a positive atmosphere. Gymnastics classes begin with stretching and warm-up exercises, and students are then taught basic tumbling and balancing skills, obstacle courses, and exciting routines to age-appropriate music. They explore different gymnastic stations such as a balance beam, tunnel, tumbling mat, rhythmic ribbons, and other creative equipment. WEBBY Gymnastics instructors are energetic, positive, and fun. They have extensive gymnastics training as well as experience working with children and undergo ongoing training to ensure top‑quality gymnastics education. For this class, students are encouraged to wear a WEBBY T-shirt (included with registration) and any non-restrictive pants or leggings or shorts.

International Dance (8 Weeks) Children are exposed to create and nurture a world of dance that encourages creative thought and build up self-esteem. Each class studies movement, balance, and a variety of dance styles and dance props from around the world. Students develop their flexibility and grow in their artistic ability as we create dance. At the end of the session, parents are invited to a mini-performance. This is the 10th year that Ms. Alina is offering the class! Building strong and confident high-level dancers has been her passion for over seventeen years.

Pre-elementary Classes
This program brings movement-based musical learning within a group setting. Students are exposed to musical concepts, relevant to both the beginner as well as those who want to continue to grow in their musical reading ability, rhythm, and fine motor skills. Musical concepts are taught through hands-on exposure to early education musical instruments. Different 'Big Kid' instruments such as a recorder, guitar, trumpet, and violin also make guest appearances where students investigate the mechanism these instruments use to create music and interact with them. Through fun and enjoyable experiences, the program continuously improves the skills needed to play a musical instrument in later years.

ShiningStars: Class I and Class II ShiningStars classes are designed to encourage creative dramatic play through drama and theater. Using theater-based exercises and games, students explore emotions, characters, story settings, and props. With our unique ShiningStars curriculum, students develop many essential life skills, including cognitive, physical and motor skills, coordination, focus, clarity of speech, and much more. The goal is not only to learn the wonderful world of theater but help build confidence, boost communication skills, and foster creativity, all while having an incredible amount of fun!

Sprout with Art by Smart with Art Sprout with Art is a preschool art education curriculum designed with process-oriented art experiences through historical art content, a variety of materials, and an introduction to the principles of design. It also combines the use of children's books, additional resources, and fun facts for each of the lessons. With each art experience, students develop fine motor skills and begin building a foundation as a young budding artist.

Junior Engineers Young students build fun and simple models using DUPLO® blocks. By playing with and manipulating the models, they experience pulleys, levers, gears, wheels, and axles while exploring energy, buoyancy, and balance. Classes include free-building time to promote creativity.

Students learn and practice Karate skills with punching bags, breaking boards, blocking drills, kicking targets, and more! Karate-X has been teaching in the Puget Sound for 19 years, with a Martial Arts program specifically designed for preschool and elementary students. The professional instructors know how to motivate students while building selfconfidence and discipline. Belt rank testing is held at the end of each session, giving students goals to aim for and recognition of their accomplishments. For beginners who have never tried Karate to athletes of any sport, Karate-X challenges and grows bodies and minds!

Kindergarten Chess (8 Weeks) Studies show that chess improves a child’s visual memory, attention span, spatial reasoning skills, the capacity to predict and anticipate consequences and the ability to evaluate alternatives. In this Chess class, students have the opportunity to solve chess puzzles on a specific topic and learn how pieces move and capture.

Kids N Keys Group Class Kids N Keys introduces students to the fundamentals of piano playing in a playful group setting. Each class includes critical listening activities and playing by ear to develop the ability to make music at the keyboard even before students can read music notation. Through group activities, students learn the written language of music and review musical concepts. Students get focused time at the keyboard to learn how to play popular melodies and prepare for a concert for parents/guardians at the end of the last lesson of the term. This class is limited to a maximum of 6 students, with two students per keyboard, to allow for a focus on individual progress.

1st–3rd Grade Active Minds (8 Weeks) Does your child like to go on an adventure or love to run, jump, crawl, and roll? Then Active Minds is the class for him/her. Students enjoy physical activities and games that adhere to “Learn Through Play” principles that are proven to help young learners with cognitive and physical development. Classes focus on the Six Pillars of Development: • Movement & Mobility: Learners move in all ways (run, jump, crawl) • Academics: Supportive learning environment. • Teamwork: Learners work collaboratively to complete tasks and problem solve. • Communication: Dialogue builds bonds, confidence, and emotional intelligence. • Creativity: Activities will incorporate imagination and "outside the box thinking." • Fun: They are children, after all!

Chess In this class, students learn tactical chess ideas like pins, forks, and discoveries. Students work on puzzles learning how to checkmate the opponent in one or two moves and on tactics. Students watch and learn from short master and grandmaster games. There is a lot of chess-playing time too!

Rainy Day Dinner Club You don’t have to make dinner tonight! Each week, students learn basic cooking skills while making dinner for their families! Students create delicious dishes focusing on the importance of local ingredients, scratch cooking, and natural preservatives while practicing knife skills and kitchen safety. This class uses the perspective of food, cooking, and nutrition to learn about geography, math skills, science, and culture while helping students develop a lifelong love of fresh ingredients. These hands-on cooking classes are fun, delicious, healthy, and a wonderful way to develop an enthusiasm for the kitchen classroom. Each entrée prepared serves four to six and packaged in oven-ready cookware with baking instructions. The menu changes for each session. Vegetarian options are available upon request. The meals are nut-free, but Rainy Day Dinner Club is unable to provide gluten-free or dairy-free classes.

Young Rembrandts Elementary and Cartoon Drawing Start 2020 off with a bang! Young Rembrandts students flex their creative muscles as they take on artistic challenges like our Winter Birdhouses and Sporty Snowboarder lesson in January. In February, students will master perspective and personality as they complete a challenging Palm Tree Scene, cute Penguins, and their version of Grant Wood's American Gothic. In March, get ready for a mix of elegance and graphic style drawings as students complete a Graceful Swan and Line Art Owl. There's no better way to shake the winter blues!

1st–5th Grade Revealing Science presented by Mad Science of Sno-King (8 Weeks) Mad Science takes students to a revealing look at the world around us. For eight weeks, they examine bugs, the most abundant and diverse group of animals on the planet, study unseen forces that shape our planet and discover how a kitchen is really an amazing chemistry lab. Students explore how science is used to make toys fun, movies magical, and find out whodunit in the great cookie caper. New topics are introduced each week, and at the end of each class, a take-home project is made to showcase what exciting science they learned that day.

Kids' Carpentry is a hands-on toy building experience designed to teach students practical woodworking skills with an emphasis on the safe use of hand tools. We create unique opportunities for students to construct fun and exciting projects while empowering them to become independent thinkers-building confidence, self‑esteem, and a repertoire of practical skills that last them a lifetime. At the end of the session, each student will go home with at least one but often three or more toys that they have made and painted by hand.

2nd–5th Grade Discover Magic Orange Wand: Unlocking Wonder Why should students just read about a magic school when they can attend a real one! The Seattle Magic Academy is returning with their popular magic class. This time it's the "Discover Magic Orange Wand: Unlocking Wonder" magic course. Different color wand courses offered can be taken in any order. In addition to learning some amazing magic tricks, students develop communication skills and build self-confidence. All materials are provided, including: • Custom magic tricks developed specifically for children (but will amaze adults) • "Secret" file folders that have lots of tips and additional tricks. • Access to a secret online video vault where students can review everything taught in class. • A graduation certificate, orange magic wand, and more!

Sewing Jump into the exciting world of sewing! In this class, students use both hands and handy machines to make oodles of fun projects that may include emojis, pajamas, aprons, messenger bags, zipper totes, infinity scarves, monsters and much, much, more. On the first day of class, we survey our young sewists to come up with projects that are both fun and challenging for their experience level and interest. No experience necessary, and all supplies and fun are provided.

3rd–5th Grade Animation Maker (9 Weeks) Enter the world of movie and game animations! Students learn the core skills of creating simple animated movies, creating 2D and 3D characters and animating them. They take their learning beyond stop-motion animation with real animation design tools. Students get to create computer graphics and build animations like the pros!

4th–8th Grade Chess (8 Weeks)
Grades 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 Fridays (Jan. 10, 24, 31; Feb. 7, 28; Mar. 6, 13, 20) Cost: $210.00

Properties of Pastel: Discovering Oil and Chalk Students learn the unique properties of both oil and chalk pastels and how to properly work with each medium as they explore their creativity. Students create cats and learn about cool colors as they look at the artist, Laurel Burch. Music and art are explored as they design their Yellow Submarine inspired by the Beatles, create sunflowers inspired by VanGogh, as well as create a cupcake you’ll want to take a bite off! This class allows students to expand their creative skills as they discover the unique properties that both oil and chalk pastels offer to artists.

Kids Carpentry (9 Weeks) Kids' Carpentry is a hands-on toy building experience designed to teach students practical woodworking skills with an emphasis on the safe use of hand tools. We create unique opportunities for students to construct fun and exciting projects while empowering them to become independent thinkers-building confidence, self-esteem and a repertoire of practical skills that last them a lifetime. At the end of the session, each student will go home with at least one but often three or more toys that they have made and painted by hand.

6th–8th Grade 3D Game Development (9 Weeks) 3D Game Development spans a wonderful mix of creative problem solving with coding and artistic expression through 3D Modeling & Animation. Students learn the tools and techniques used by the pros to create 3D games such as Fortnite, learning to artistically model, animate, and cleverly program. This class covers programming with javascript and helps develop 3D spatial and visual cognition while inspiring students to develop at their creative best!

After-School Classes

Time: 3:30-4:30 p.m. Number of Students: 8
Upper Elementary & Middle School Classes
In this class, students study intermediate tactics, like in between moves, matting patterns with different pieces, and study examples of combinations with sacrifices, including Legal’s Mate, Lasker’s Combination, etc. They also learn popular openings like the Italian Game, King's Gambit, and Sicilian Defense, solve a lot of puzzles, and play a lot of chess.
