arrior strength, determination and pride can be felt in every classroom, lecture hall, athletic arena, and student gathering place on the campus of East Stroudsburg University. It’s captured in a student’s face as they learn and grow. In an athlete’s expression of joy when they master a challenging skill. It’s in the connections made with new friends who also aspire to achieve greatness in their lifetime.

I am honored to serve as ESU’s interim president and every day witness the triumphs that come from the Warrior academic and athletic experience. I am also grateful and humbled by the selfless alumni, friends, faculty and staff that play such a critical role in helping make that happen. Fiscal year 2020-2021 was laden with challenges for us all but I’m happy to share that, through your kindness and generosity, the ESU Foundation raised $3,578,787 in total gifts and pledges to support ESU and its students. Notably, in a year when the entire globe was in the midst of a pandemic, you showed your support, enabling us to provide more than $1 million for student scholarships for the second consecutive year. Our students tell us often that the difference for them to stay enrolled comes down to the scholarship support they receive from you. A few of their inspiring stories can be found within the pages of this report. In 2020-2021, you rallied for personal and meaningful causes, resulting in the completion of three major fundraising campaigns that will have a direct impact on the way students learn and the positive experience they will take with them upon graduation. As you read the pages ahead, you will discover how alumni, friends and the community came together with remarkable resolve to help get the job done. The result will be seen in the coming year, including the building of a new Community Health Education and Simulation Center for our students in the College of Health Sciences and local community healthcare organizations. Once complete, an Esports Lab will create an innovative gamebased educational environment for digital media students. And the Warriors football program will have a new, modern space that reflects ESU’s dedication to the players, team, and program. These campaigns are a small part of the overall impact you have made upon ESU and its students. At ESU, we have learned during a unique and unforeseen time in our world that you continue to care and value the importance of a college education. You step forward when asked and take the needed steps to ensure our students have an exceptional experience that prepares them to lead successful lives. In fiscal year 2020-2021, you indeed Answered the Call and for that, I thank you. ■

or nearly 35 years, the East Stroudsburg University Foundation has served ESU and its students, helping ensure the academic, athletic and higher education experience is the best possible. As an alumnus, former member of the Council of Trustees, and chairman of the Foundation Board of Directors for the past eight years, I can assure you it is quite personal to me that we continue to do our utmost for ESU students. As an ESU Warrior myself, the pride I have for my alma mater is immense and it’s an honor to be a part of the Foundation’s mission. In all we do, the approach is student centered that every student with a desire to learn should have the resources available to pursue their education.

We likely can all agree the past year has been one of uncharted territory for the non-profit world and the ESU Foundation is no exception. How would a global pandemic impact our students, our donors and the larger ESU community? In fact, how could we expect you to selflessly give when the outlook was so uncertain? I am delighted to share that you didn’t blink when we asked for your help, resulting in the Foundation securing more than $3.5 million in total gifts and pledges in fiscal year 2020-2021. Within the pages of this Annual Report and Honor Roll of Donors you will learn how gifts like yours have a tremendous impact on our ability to provide scholarship support to students. Their stories are what keep us motivated to strive for more. You’ll see the results of alumni coming together to fundraise for a program near and dear to their hearts as well as the names of thousands of individuals, businesses and organizations who answered the call when asked. Not only do I need to thank every one of you for your support, I also must extend my gratitude to the ESU administration and campus community for partnering with the Foundation in so many aspects. Through collaboration on programs, projects and campaigns, we are able to learn the university’s needs and fundraise accordingly and, more importantly, successfully. I’d also like to thank my fellow board members for their commitment and dedication to the Foundation and University. They give 100 percent – in time, talent and treasure – to ESU and its students and we could not have overcome the past year’s challenges without their input and support. The same goes for the Foundation leadership team and staff that works in the trenches to bring campaigns to life, accounts for the funds raised, and thanks and stewards our donors for their never-ending generosity. Now deep into the new fiscal year, we are excited for perhaps more normalcy and reconnecting with one another in person. In the meantime, please accept my and the board’s thanks for standing by the ESU Foundation. We greatly appreciate your generosity, partnership and most of all, your friendship. ■

RICHARD D. SANTORO EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE he past two years have been unlike anything we’ve experienced in recent memory. Across the globe, non-proﬁt organizations were faced with unknowns as to how they would fare during a public health crisis and the economic impact it would have on philanthropic giving. The East Stroudsburg University Foundation wasn’t alone in its challenges, but I am proud to say we navigated these stressful times thanks to your kindness. Through your generosity, we continue to move forward with our important work of supporting ESU and its students.

It is my honor to share the impact of your generosity in Answering the Call, the ESU Foundation’s 2020-2021 Annual Report and Honor Roll of Donors. It gives you a glimpse into a solid year at the Foundation as we build on our commitment to provide the best educational experience to our students at a reasonable cost. Donor contributions enhance every aspect of university life - in the classroom, on the athletic field of competition and beyond. Your gifts of support assist students with their tuition and books, fund research projects, programs, academic events, athletics, and more. Specifically, thanks to you, some of our accomplishments in 2020-2021: The ESU Foundation secured $3,578,787 in total gifts and pledges in support of ESU and its students. Scholarship support to students totaled $1,037,728, surpassing the $1 million mark for two years in a row. The Foundation awarded 674 scholarships to student recipients and generous donors created 20 new scholarship funds. The prestigious President’s Circle saw remarkable growth in 2020-2021, significantly increasing the number of donors who give $1,500 or more during the fiscal year by nearly 92 percent. Three major fundraising campaigns were completed, giving ESU the opportunity to provide students an enhanced academic and athletic experience: • The You WIN in the Locker Room First Campaign surpassed its goal, raising $886,397 to build a new Warriors football locker room. • The Community Health Education and Simulation Center will become a reality thanks to the $859,807 secured from generous donors and organizations. • An ESports Lab will give digital media students an enhanced learning experience following the culmination of a $220,000 fundraising campaign. Throughout this report you will learn more about these campaigns and more, along with stories that offer a glimpse of the many doors opened for students who benefit from your philanthropic support. 2020-2021 A YEAR FOR CAMPAIGN COMPLETIONS The East Stroudsburg University Foundation is grateful for your support in ﬁnalizing three major fundraising campaigns that will enhance the academic and athletic experience for students. Thank you for ANSWERING THE CALL.

Creating a place built on

WARRIOR PRIDE Football locker room campaign surpasses expectations You WIN in the Locker Room First, a $750,000 fundraising campaign launched by the ESU Foundation and the Department of Athletics to build a new football locker room in Koehler Fieldhouse, was completed, surpassing its goal and raising over $860,000. The campaign kicked off on Oct. 8, 2020, with a virtual event that invited more than 100 alumni and friends of the program to learn more about the project. A 17-member fundraising committee was tasked with reaching out to alumni and friends, led by co-chairs Pat Flaherty ’78 and Mike Terwilliger ’78. continued on page 10

Construction of the new locker room is near completion. It is located in the old space previously used by visiting teams in Koehler Fieldhouse and is larger than the team’s current facility. The upgraded facilities include 26-inch wide, open cherry-wood lockers with LED lighting, replacing the existing grey metal lockers, a cell phone charging station, an equipment drying system on top of each locker, and a speaker system to pump music throughout the space. There is also an academic center where players can work on assignments. The new facility reﬂects ESU’s dedication to the players, team, and program, said Dr. Gary R. Gray, ESU’s director of Intercollegiate Athletics. "We're providing the student-athletes with a comfortable new environment. It’s not just a locker room—it’s a team room. The players spend a lot of time in there. The new space tells them we’re committed to the program and committed to their

success,” Gray said. The space includes seven named areas, including the academic center and coaches’ space. All the lockers have been sold and will contain a plaque bearing the name of a campaign donor. Rich Santoro, executive director of the ESU Foundation, said the swiftness of the fundraising shows the dedication and loyalty of ESU alumni. “To hit our goal at the six-month mark is pretty much unheard of. The [football] program is one that has stayed in touch with their alumni over the years. We had donations from every generation—basically the 1960’s through recent graduates in 2020. It was everything you want in a campaign. We had more than 200 former players step forward and make this a reality. When we do the ribbon cutting/dedication, a lot of people will be very pleased. We’re excited to bring all of our donors back to celebrate.” ■

Inspiration comes from within the family on Esports project

A Commitment

to Philanthropy Alfredo Garcia ’03 with his wife Jennifer and two children, Isabella, 15, and Maxwell, 8.

For Alfredo Garcia ’03 and his family, giving back is just the right thing to do. Nearly 20 years after graduation, Garcia maintains strong ties to the East Stroudsburg University community. His ongoing gratitude to the university for helping lay the foundation for his current success and forging some important friendships continues to drive his involvement as both a donor and ESU Foundation board member. Garcia hails from Venezuela. He came to the U.S. as an exchange student at Pleasant Valley High School in Brodheadsville, Pa., and earned top grades. When it was time to look at colleges, Garcia had a clear choice. “It was either attend ESU on a full scholarship, or go back to Venezuela,” he says. While a student at ESU, Garcia kept with family tradition and majored in economics. He also minored in French and completed a work-study in the language department—

something he says he would not have been able to do in Venezuela. “[Universities] do not allow you to expand your knowledge beyond what you’re studying,” he explains. Garcia got involved in student life, writing articles for the business school’s newspaper, and forming friendships with several members of ESU's men's soccer team, many of which endure today. In addition to soccer, Garcia has been a strong supporter of ESU’s Esports Lab campaign thanks to his son Maxwell, who ﬁrst introduced him to this emerging ﬁeld. “My son, who is now in third grade, is very involved with video games. I told him he can’t play video games all day, and he asked, ‘Why?’ When the new video game console came out, he said he wanted to build his own computer [for gaming]. His love for it just opened my mind.” As a Foundation board member, Garcia knew ESU was developing an Esports program. The new lab will create an innovative game-

based learning environment that develops new learning models, specifically in emerging digital media technology fields where STEM principles can be applied. ESU will purchase state-of-the-art computers, software, gaming furniture, and equipment for the lab space, which will be housed on the first floor of Rosenkrans East. “That campaign was in need of some funds to get fully funded. I was in a position to help. It is my understanding the facility will be a place where kids can play video games but also learn the business, so they get both the business and tech sides. This will be the future for a lot of these kids, so I decided to get involved in this campaign.” Soccer remains Garcia’s strongest connection to ESU. He had connections to ESU’s program before he even got to campus. “When I was an exchange student in high school, I was part of a program called PEACE (Pro-American Educational and Cultural Exchange). That program brings

kids from Mexico and South America to Pennsylvania. At the end of the program, all the exchange students went to Boston where we learned from each other and exchanged stories. One of the other kids was a student from Mexico, and he went to ESU on a full ride. He played soccer. When I came to ESU, he was the first person I reached out to because I didn’t know anyone.” That “other kid” from Mexico was Jorge Chapoy '03, one of the best players ESU has ever seen; he was inducted to ESU's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017. Garcia says soccer “is not a fraternity, but the camaraderie is just like it. The current coach, Rob Berkowitz is a great friend of mine." Former coach Jerry Sheska '68 M'81 is another longtime friend, and Garcia is active with the campaign for Sheska Soccer Stadium. The new stadium is slated to be built in the heart of campus adjacent to EilerMartin Stadium, site of the former baseball field. When complete, the stadium will attract top men's and women's soccer talent to ESU, aid in admissions for student-athletes, and provide a home facility where alumni, family, and fans can attend games and events. It will feature a new NCAA regulation turf soccer field, perimeter fencing, spectator seating, field lighting, a press box, scoreboard, and sound system. Garcia feels this project— a state-of-the-art standalone facility—is essential for taking the soccer program to its next level. He feels former players and students should be especially moved to contribute to assist the next generation of ESU soccer. Not all of Garcia’s biggest life lessons came

from the classroom or his affiliation with the soccer team. Some simply came from the college experience. “Independence [was a big lesson] for sure,” he recalls. “That’s a major goal for at least the first year or two of college—to teach you how to be independent and manage your budget, manage your laundry, food, classes, et cetera. For many it’s the first time you’re on your own and having to manage things on your own.” Professionally, Garcia’s career started with a student internship at Penn’s Peak in Jim Thorpe—a break that came about through an ESU connection, Richard Cherry, who would be a pivotal figure throughout Garcia’s life. Since then, he has been mindful of recognizing and seizing new opportunities. “When I studied economics, economics itself was not the door opening I needed. It was a series of things that led to what I do now. It was a path in which I followed the opportunities where they led me,” he explains Garcia lives in Nazareth, Pa., with his family—wife Jennifer and children Isabella, 15, and Maxwell, 8. He recently joined Snowden Lane Partners, a New York Citybased wealth advisory firm, as a senior partner, managing director. He previously worked at Wells Fargo as an advisor and managing director. The Garcias are committed to philanthropy. “When you have success in your professional life and you’re in a financial position to have a little extra, you have to decide what to do with that extra. My wife and I feel we should help. There are so many needs out there. What

do you pick? I felt I owed the college something because I got something out of it. I think it’s an evolution in someone’s life. You have to feel it, and I have,” he says. His involvement and dedication to ESU remains a constant. Furthering his commitment to the university’s soccer program and honor those who offered him opportunities, Garcia established the Richard R. Cherry Men’s Soccer Annual Scholarship in 2018 and continues to contribute annually. “Cherry was not only the person that gave me that first internship, but also the person that got me my first job and eventually the opportunity to be a business owner, when we became partners in the Broadway Café, a restaurant/bar in Gilbert, Pa.,” Garcia says. Cherry was also active with youth soccer programs, so they shared some important common ground. “I named the scholarship after him because he was such an advocate [for soccer],” Garcia says. “I started the scholarship to help out the program and get better players involved. When the new facility came about, I pledged some funds for it. I brought some of my friends into the program. Part of my giving back to the school is giving back to the program.” Garcia says everyone can give back in some way. The key is to find that cause or organization a person identifies with and relates to. “I don’t think saying giving to one particular place is right. Each person should feel a place or cause is worth their money and time. There are hundreds— thousands—of nonprofits to which you can donate.” ■

An Esports summer camp for youth was held at ESU in 2019, providing inspiration for an enhanced learning experience for students.

$225,000 raised for the project, the Esports Lab will create an innovative game-based educational environment that develops new models of learning, speciﬁcally in emerging digital media technology ﬁelds where science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) principles can be shared. Funds raised will be used to purchase state-of-the-art computers, software, gaming furniture and equipment for the lab space. Plans and design for the space are now under review. 13

With fundraising completed in 20202021, College of Health Sciences students and local community healthcare organizations are looking forward to the completion of ESU’s new Community Health Education and Simulation Center that will be built in the DeNike Center for Human Services. Construction is slated to begin in May 2022. Major donors to the $850,000 campaign are the R. Dale and Frances Hughes Foundation, Lehigh Valley Health Network – Pocono, the Lester G. Abeloff Foundation, and the State of Pennsylvania through two grants awarded by the Commonwealth Financing Authority. The center will offer state-of-the art simulation and inter-professional practice opportunities for students in the College of Health Sciences and local community healthcare organizations “We are very excited to see this project move forward, the culmination of many years of planning, fundraising, and advocacy on the part of the College of Health Sciences faculty and staff and the ESU Foundation,” said Denise Seigart, Ph.D., MS, RN, dean of ESU’s College of

Health Sciences. “We expect this center to enhance our already very high quality healthcare programs and the competence of professionals in the local area, as well.” Seigart said the center will have two ICU beds with high ﬁdelity manikins, a ﬂexible operating room space, a nursing station, an observation and conference room, and a high tech control room where faculty will be able to monitor multiple simulations. “Students will be challenged during these simulation sessions to problem solve and practice situations they are

likely to encounter in their clinical settings with live patients. These can include cardiac arrests, strokes, respiratory arrest, disseminated infections, postpartum hemorrhage, and many other situations,” said Seigart. Laura Waters, Ph.D., RN, associate professor and chair of the Department of Nursing, says the new Sim Center, as it’s called, is a highly anticipated addition to the nursing program that will allow ESU students to experience a multitude of patient conditions and applications of interventions that are based on evidence-based practice. “Simulation labs and the related patient focused activities are designed to provide immersive learning experiences to educate the nurse of the future,” Waters said. Learning achieved through this type of simulation activity has been shown via research to be extensive and well retained by students and healthcare professionals,” added Seigart. “We will have many people to thank for this new center and will plan to have a grand opening in the fall of 2022.” ■

Nearly 100 alumni and friends of the program joined the online festivities to learn more about the $750,000 project that would culminate with a new football locker room in Koehler Fieldhouse. Women’s Acrobatics and Tumbling

A campaign to support recruitment costs, equipment needs, travel, and athlete scholarships for the Women’s Acrobatics and Tumbling program saw steady growth in 2020-2021. As of Nov. 30, 2021, $117,795 in cash and pledges has been raised in the $500,000 campaign. A fundraising committee is comprised of alumni from various generations of the former ESU men’s

and women’s gymnastics teams and friends of ESU athletics, all working closely with the ESU Foundation, Warrior Athletics Department and Interim Head Coach Kristina “Krikit” Gulics. The committee, chaired by Bruno Klaus and Alumni Vice Chairs Sue Bateman Walton ’90 and Anthony “Tony” Gehman ’78, continue outreach efforts for alumni and corporate support for the program. ■

Sheska Soccer Stadium Launched in 2019-2020, the fundraising campaign to build a stand-alone soccer facility in the heart of campus gained strength last ﬁscal year, edging closer to the funds needed to build the facility. As of Nov. 30, 2021, $166,685 in cash, pledges and verbal commitments had been donated by alumni and friends, all looking forward to naming the stadium after Jerry Sheska '68 M'81, ESU’s men’s soccer coach for 29 years (1982-2010) and women’s coach for three (1992-1994). Sheska is the winningest PSAC coach with 424 wins to his name. A 36-member committee (chaired by Sheska) is working with the ESU Foundation in rallying

alumni and friends support of the project. Sheska Soccer Stadium will be built adjacent to Eiler-Martin Stadium where the baseball field (Mitterling Field) was once located. Its features will include a new NCAA regulation artificial turf soccer field, perimeter fencing, spectator seating, field lighting, a press box, scoreboard and sound system. More good news came to the campaign in April 2020 when ESU’s Student Activity Association (SAA) Board approved a dollar-for-dollar matching gift up to $1,250,000. Through SAA’s support, ESU’s club and intramural sports will also have use of the field when the soccer programs are not using the facility. ■

Receiving the Sara Moore Rand ’61 Endowed Scholarship and the Michael ’93 and Marni ’93 Murphy Educational Endowed Scholarship has helped show sophomore Kirstin Hendershot the value of hard work. “These scholarships showed me that my hard work is paying off and they motivate me to continue to work hard to earn them again,” said Hendershot, a native of Pen Argyl, Pa. “I was really honored and excited to receive these scholarships. I’m grateful because they’ve helped me pay off some of my student loans and cover the cost of my books.” The Sara Moore Rand ’61 Endowed Scholarship is for education majors in good academic standing, who are involved on campus. The Michael ’93 and Marni ’93 Murphy Educational Endowed Scholarship is awarded to education majors with a 3.0 grade point average. Hendershot, an elementary education major, is the daughter of two educators. Her father Dustin teaches seventh grade math at Nazareth Middle School, and her mother Tanya teaches ﬁrst grade at Shawnee Elementary School in Easton.

came ﬁrst before any extracurricular activities,” Hendershot said. “I’ve always worked hard and wanted to do well in my classes. I love to continue to learn and push myself to broaden what I already know. I want to work hard to become a teacher and role model to younger students.” Hendershot credits her parents with instilling the structure and discipline in her life that has helped her succeed— especially last school year when all her freshman classes took place virtually due to the pandemic. While it was challenging to stay focused at home, Hendershot became a more independent learner. “Without being in the classroom, I had to take more responsibility and be my own biggest advocate. I would send emails

to my professors if I had questions or needed help, and I had to be active during class and make the most out of the limited interactions,” she said. Hendershot, who is the administrative director of the Campus Activity Board, and a member of Best Buddies, a club that does activities with students with special needs, hopes to one day be in a position to give back to ESU. “I know how happy and excited I am to earn scholarships and I’d like to see someone else have that same experience,” she said. “It will be good to know that the scholarship recipient can focus on school, instead of worrying about money.” ■ Student Stories continued on page 17

Grace Reixinger’s life has been anything but easy. Over the years, the junior health and physical education major has endured many personal challenges, often taking on extra responsibilities and caretaking at home, in addition to juggling multiple jobs to support herself and fund her education. Receiving the DeNike Endowed Scholarship, the Diana E. Weaver ‘57 Annual Scholarship, and the Pinky O’Neil ‘57 Honorary Ms. Senior America Annual Scholarship, has provided Reixinger ﬁnancial support, a positive role model, and inspiration for future philanthropic goals. “The scholarships paid for about onethird of my semester,” the Milford native said. “I’m paying for my education myself, so having the ﬁnancial support helps to relieve the stress of that. It’s greatly appreciated.” The DeNike Endowed Scholarship was established by Dr. Howard DeNike ‘26, a longtime ESU faculty member. Recipients must be majoring in physical education or health education, have completed at least 62 credits, and exhibit high 24

academic performance. The Diana E. Weaver ‘57 Annual Scholarship is awarded to health and physical education majors with at least 30 credits and good academic and social standing. The Pinky O'Neil '57 Honorary Ms. Senior America Annual and Endowed Scholarships were established by Sandra “Pinky” Fees O’Neil ’57. Recipients must be majoring in health education, physical education or health and physical education teacher certiﬁcation. Recipients must have completed at least 30 credits with a minimum 2.75 GPA with preference given to female students. Reixinger has enjoyed the opportunity to correspond with Weaver. “Hearing from her makes it personal. It’s nice to see that she loved ESU so much that she wanted to help someone else have a good experience there,” Reixinger said. “It gives me a role model, and it makes me think, ‘maybe one day I could do that for someone else?’” Reixinger is passionate about using sports as a channel for personal development and good mental health, in addition to using the team atmosphere as a safe support system while

navigating challenges. Participating in diving and swimming while in school helped Rexinger through difficult times and led her to discover her love for coaching. She is the diving coach at Delaware Valley High School in Milford and a 14-under swim coach for the Delaware Valley Water Moccasins. She is also a water safety instructor and lifeguard. While Reixinger was growing up, her family experienced a succession of life-threatening health scares. Reixinger was tasked with caring for sick family members and taking on household responsibilities. While her mother, Cheryl, suffered ﬁrst from cancer, and then a misdiagnosed autoimmune disorder for years, Reixinger became her mother’s primary caretaker— while working six jobs. After the disorder was correctly diagnosed, and her mother’s health was stable, Reixinger was able to resume a more normal schedule and pursue her education. “There were days when I asked myself, “Why is this happening to our family?” I realized that what’s come out of this is the way I can help other people who are going through something similar. I love relating to other people and letting them know they’re not alone,” she said. As a member of the Health and P.E. Club and a peer mentor who helps new students get acclimated to campus, Reixinger loves the positive inﬂuence she can have on others. “Get to know the people around you. You never know what they’re going through and how relating to them could help both you, and them,” she said. “Even through masks, you can still see if someone is smiling or having a bad day. If you show someone you care, you never know the impact you can have on their life.” ■

Giovanni Guarini John “Tobi” Tobin Endowed Scholarship As the recipient of the John “Tobi” Tobin Endowed Scholarship, Giovanni Guarini is not only supported ﬁnancially, he feels supported toward his ultimate goal of becoming a mental health therapist and helping those in need.

“I became aware of what my capabilities are, and that motivated me to go all out to achieve more. I started focusing on what I could do, instead of what I couldn’t do, and that’s the mindset I continue to have,” he said.

The John “Tobi” Tobin Endowed Scholarship is awarded to undergraduates who have a documented learning disability. Guarini, a junior psychology major, has ADHD and bipolar disorders. He hopes to one day work with young people with mental disorders, who have gotten into trouble, to help guide them in the right direction. Guarini believes people with mental disorders are often looked upon negatively and misunderstood. He wants to change these misconceptions and empower those who are struggling.

Another motivating factor is to be the ﬁrst in his family to graduate from college.

“My own mental disorders have helped me feel closer to people who also have them. One of the reasons I went into psychology was to ﬁgure out myself and who I am. By bettering myself and my future, I can help other people who are struggling,” he said. Growing up in Bayonne, N.J., Guarini lived with his mother, Jessica Tinnirello and his stepfather, Anthony Tinnirello. He was the oldest of ﬁve children and money was scarce. School was—and still is— a challenge for Guarini. His ADHD makes it difficult for him to concentrate, and his bipolar disorder can affect his motivation and self-esteem. Early in middle school, Guarini was prescribed medication for his ADHD, which helped him focus. He began earning better grades and felt encouraged to work harder to see how far he could go.

Guarini, who now resides in East Stroudsburg, credits receiving the

scholarship with pushing him to work harder to maintain good grades. It’s also helped him buy his computer and books. “I don’t know what I would be doing without the extra help. It keeps me moving forward,” he said. “It’s also opened my eyes to what opportunities I can have and to see that there are people out there who are willing to help me.” ■

The East Stroudsburg University Office of Alumni Engagement connects with

over 50,000 alumni worldwide, through events, affinity and class reunions, regional chapters, and networking opportunities. The office also communicates regularly with alumni through print and electronic media. The ESU Alumni Association Board of Directors once again obtained 100% participation toward their

annual scholarship and began collaborations with the career and workforce development and admissions offices to engage current and prospective students. In June 2020, the board announced executive members for 2020-2021: Dave Super ’80, president; Christine Rohr Thompson ’73, vice president; and Caitlin “Katie” Ord ’07 M’08, secretary. Regional chapters in Bucks/Montgomery County, Lehigh Valley, Delco/ChesCo (Delaware County/Chester County), Florida, Connecticut, Philadelphia area, Monroe County, Metro Washington, D.C., and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton continued to connect with members and scheduled local virtual events. Plans for interest-based affinity groups were put on hold until in-person recruitment meetings are possible. ■

Virtual events took center stage for the ESU Office of Alumni Engagement on 2020-2021. The team started the year with a Fourth of July Virtual 5K, hosted multiple online book clubs, and introduced Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) virtual ﬁtness classes. Homecoming 2020 featured a virtual wine tasting experience for the 50th Reunion for the Class of 1970, a video tour of campus with Coach Denny Douds, and ESU swag mailed in a decorative Homecoming box. Trivia Nights became popular as folks zoomed in to test their ESU knowledge. ■ The ESU GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) group promoted ﬁtness during the pandemic lockdown with virtual exercise

In place of an actual Homecoming celebration, the Office of Alumni Engagement sent more than 100 party boxes to alumni across the country. Still looking to engage Warriors during the ongoing pandemic, the team also held virtual wine tastings, campus tours, 5Ks and book club events during the year.

KEEPING IN TOUCH Two Alumni Herald magazines were published and sent to nearly 35,000 alumni and friends in 2020-2021.

Y OFFICE OF ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT SOCIAL MEDIA/OUTREACH Alumni Engagement social media use continued to grow with Facebook, Twitter and Instagram showing an average increase of 10 percent over all platforms. Alumni and friends were invited to participate in contests and share fun content with special themed campaigns including Where Warriors Live, ESU Alumni and Friends Holiday Cookbook, Alumni Sweethearts, Pets with Warrior Spirit and Share a Message with the Class of 2021.
