CLIENT: GOULSTON & STORRS
This project involved the consolidation and relocation of the law firm into 100,000 square feet spanning four floors at One Post Office Square. The space features a reception lounge, co-working area, and cafe space with floor to ceiling glass on three sides, creating a sense of openness and offering access to spectacular views and a private outdoor deck overlooking Post Office Square.
Furniture selections are refined and tailored, in understated natural tones and textures, reflecting the heritage of the original wharf location of the firm on the Fort Point Channel. The design introduces a new prototype of single-size attorney offices, that can flex to be double offices in the future. It is also their first location where micro-offices were implemented to allow for additional privacy for users in compact spaces.

This project represented over a decade of immersion, engagement, and partnership to evolve best practices for activity-based working with this top international consulting firm. Following an extensive pilot process, comprehensive guidelines were developed and implemented to address adaptation, activity zoning, environmental requirements, and the selection of furniture, finishes, and lighting.
As we worked with this client on their individual space requirements, it was realized that there were no products on the market that responded to their need for untethered and flexible team workstations, with human-centric and ergonomic features, and convertible offices that flexed from office to team rooms through a reservation release system. This was when Harbor Stones was developed and patented by Elkus Manfredi Architects, and it became the BCG standard worldwide. It is available on the market today.

More efficient, more graceful, and more individually welcoming than traditional orthogonal benching, the flexible Harbor Stone™ System allows for unlimited configurations of cluster sizes and shapes. The simple, curved, and uncluttered design gives the workplace a fresh modern appeal and creates a sense of calm that benefits the user and the overall space.
With its simple configurability and ability to create odd numbered groups of
desks, the Harbor Stone™ System lends itself to irregularly-shaped floor plans for efficient and flexible space use.
And, unlike linear workplace benching systems, it can be fine-tuned for the best views and effective collaboration.
The plan on the right is approximately 2,500 SF. In this example, a linear benching system of 43 seats requires 66 SF/per person, while the Harbor Stone™ System allows for more seating, in this case, at an average of 58 SF/per person.

When AEW decided to revolutionize their workplace by moving offices to the inside and workstations to the perimeter, and to reimagine their collaborative spaces - both open and enclosed - they turned to us for a deep engagement process with user groups. The new design, characterized by openness and transparency, fosters mentoring, strengthens team building, and encourages creative collisions throughout the workplace, and the furniture and its placement played a pivitol role in its success. Offices and workstations were custom-designed, then competitively bid, for maximum impact and maximum value. The offices incorporate the "Smooth Sailing" technology rail for easy screen sharing. The workstations were custom designed beacuse there was nothing on the market to satisfy the client needs. The results are that their employees are in the office virtually every day, unmandated, and their work process has been streamlined.

Foley Hoag's renovation in place included an expansive two-story centralized conference center with a variety of flexible spaces to host multiple clients and functions at the same time.
The furniture selections blended older classic pieces from an earlier renovation with new pieces for a warm and purely eclectic feel. Offices were designed for user flexibility and choice. From curated selection of ancillary pieces for partners, to the innovative Smooth Sailing monitor rail developed exclusively for them by our team that facilitates focus work or team meeting at the touch of a finger.
Several custom pieces were incorporated including the monolithic reception desk and floating service credenzas.

With a focus on welcoming clients, community, and colleagues, Mintz adopted unconventional approaches to redefining their space, infusing light and warmth, and engaging their employees.
Through a co-creation process, Mintz team members at all levels had a voice in furniture programming, specification and selection. As decisions were made, mock ups were created. Each mock up was reviewed by all levels of staff for comment and refinement. The results defined their new ways of working and insured ownership in the outcome.
One interesting twist in the specifications was the resistance to a running line office front systems, preferring a warmer, more residential wood framed solution instead. We led the team through the process of equalizing performance and price for the solution, and ultimately the costs came in under the alternate products available on the market.

CLIENT: BOSTON CONSULTING GROUP
Charles River Associates (CRA), a global consulting firm, engaged Elkus Manfredi Architects to develop global furniture standards with them while we working on their headquarters project in Boston. We provided up to three possible vendor alternates for each space and furniture type, then competitively bid and prototyped them for selection for the standards. The roll out of each office ensures that metrics, performance and costs are aligned between offices, while allowing the unique character of each location to be celebrated.
Since the development of the standards, we have completed offices and expansions of them in Chicago, New York, Washington, D.C., and Oakland. Common features include co-located junior and senior staff, diverse team spaces, acoustical privacy, workstation “neighborhoods,” and a welcoming café magnet that encourages spontaneous interaction.
