As the season approaches we are pleased to present the Spring/ Summer recreation guide. This guide provides opportunities for our residents to experience a variety of programs and leisure activities. As the warm weather quickly approaches, we encourage everyone to get out and participate in all that the Town of Essex has to offer. There are a number of exciting activities occurring in all centres of the Town of Essex, with many programs and facility amenities On behalf of the department of Community Services, we wish all residents a healthy and safe Spring and Summer!

Photographs… In order to publicize programs, the Town of Essex may take photos of people involved in various programs. These photos will be used in Town publications, and are not for sale. If you don’t wish you picture or your child’s picture to be used please inform us in writing. Our facilities are open to the public and frequently media personnel visit unannounced to take photos. If your child is a regular participant in our programs and you do not want his/her photo published, please inform the staff during registration. We will make every effort possible to ensure that your child is not photographed by visiting media.

Courses will be cancelled 5 business days before the program start date if registration numbers do not meet the minimum required to run the course. Register Early; don’t be disappointed!

Transfer and Refund Do you need to change or cancel your registration? You may be able to transfer to a different program, or receive a partial or full refund. Some conditions apply. Programs offered by Essex often have waiting lists. If you do not plan to attend, please allow someone else the opportunity by submitting your request to transfer or withdraw before the program begins! Requests processed based on date received.

All requests for transfers/refunds for Aquatic Leadership/Program Workshops/One Day Courses/Weekend Courses/ Day Camp Programs (please review Program Refund or Credit Request Form Day Camp/Workshops/One Day courses/ Leadership and Play Programs and Activities at essex.ca) must be received in writing 5 business days prior to the first day of program start dates. Customers cannot register for these courses once the program has begun; therefore this time is required to ensure course viability. Customers will receive a full refund or Family Account credit if they cancel in writing at least 5 business days prior to the first day of the program. No refunds for course materials or excursions/field trips will be issued if proper written notification is not received.

Parent-Tot Programs Recreation opportunities and physical activity are essential to a child’s mental and social development as well as health and wellness. Recreation improves team building skills and healthy relationships. Our programs strive to provide children with positive, healthy, active and fun opportunities.

Totnastics

This recreational program introduces gym equipment and physical activity, with singing, activities such as rolling, climbing, swinging, balancing, sliding and jumping in an exciting environment. Totnastics 1 to 4 years

Learn to Skate

The skating program includes six levels of progression beginning with developing fundamental movement skills and physical literacy. It guides children in their skill development to become competent and confident with their athletic and physical abilities. CSA approved helmets are required for all skating programs.

Physical Literacy Excellence Active for Life

Parent and Tot Learn to Skate Parent and Tot Learn to Skate is designed to introduce new skaters to the fundamental skating skills with the assistance of a parent. Instructors lead parents and children through various games and activities to make the children reach a comfort level on the ice. Parent & Tot Learn to Skate 3 to 4 years

Hockey Skills and Drills Children will be taught the fundamental skating skills necessary to complement their game playing skills. Children will be taught proper technique to develop maximum speed, balance and agility. Each exercise will be learned correctly - which means slowly at first and then increasing speed as proper technique is achieved. No hockey gear will be needed. Sport skills development and fun, is the focus of this class which will allow participants to enjoy dodgeball with a small group of peers. Canadian Tire believes that all kids should have the chance to run, skate, play and grow. That’s why we created Canadian Tire Jumpstart™; a community-based charitable program from the Canadian Tire Foundation for Families that helps kids in need participate in organized sports and recreational activities like hockey, soccer and swimming. The program will offer financial assistance to children 17 years and younger to participate in Essex Recreation and Culture programs.

Community Services Department is able to offer financial assistance to youths 17 years and younger which will allow youths to participate in recreation programs.

Information

Clubhouse Day Camp is a great way for your children to stay active and have fun. Children will participate in active games, art and craft activities, and of course swim every day!

Things you Need to Know… Clubhouse Camp

Clubhouse Camp is an exciting adventure! Day campers are grouped according to their age and campers will take part in personal choices, group activities and special theme programs. All activities emphasize fun, challenge, creativity, imagination and cooperation.

Clubhouse Staff

Camp staff are carefully selected based on their display of enthusiasm, leadership skills and judgement. All Camp Staff attend pre-camp training sessions, are certified in Standard First Aid, CPR, Automatic External Defibrillation, and HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development.

Camper Drop-Off

Children should be dropped off at the Essex Recreation Complex/Essex Community Centre gym lobby. In order to ensure maximum safety, sign-in sheets will be provided and it is important that parents or guardians ensure campers are signed in each day. The gym is a camper only zone; parents are to remain in the lobby.

Release of Camper Policy

Children should be dropped off and picked up in the lobby area. Sign-out sheets will be provided and the Camp Coordinator must receive written consent from parents/guardians should a child need to be released into the care of an adult other than the parent/caregiver. Parents/guardians picking up children must present valid photo identification to the camp staff prior to a child being released into their care. Please ensure campers are signed out each day.

What to Bring

Campers should bring the following with them every day: swimsuit and towel, water bottle, weather appropriate clothing and hat, sunscreen, running shoes, bagged lunch with two snacks and a drink.

Weather

The sun doesn’t have to be shining to have a good time at camp! All Camp programs will continue during inclement weather. Please dress your child appropriately.

Medical Information

Health and safety are the Town’s top priorities. Please ensure your child’s information is accurate by completing the online ePACT registration from, and upload a small picture of your child. Medication must be prescribed by a physician, stored in original containers only and will be kept in a locked box. If your child develops a communicable disease during Camp (e.g. pink eye), we ask that you inform staff immediately. This will allow the Town to inform other participants and allow them to take the necessary precautions.

Regular Hours

Regular Camp day is from 7:30am–6:00pm.

Early Drop-Off and Late Pick-Up

Early drop-off and late pick-up are now included in the regular camp hours. Parents may drop-off and pick-up any time between 7:30am and 6:00pm.

Field Trips

Exciting trips are planned every week for an additional $25 (optional). Sign up at the front desk by 4:30pm on the day before the field trip to ensure your child has a place on the bus. Trips may be subject to change. Regular camp schedule will continue for those who stay back at camp.

Discounts Available

Multiple child discounts are available on full week registrations. 5% discount for two, or 10% discount with three or more family members registering. Financial Assistance is available for those who qualify.

Course Cancellation

The Town of Essex reserves the right to cancel programs if there is insufficient enrollment in a program. Every effort will be given to accommodate registrants in their respective session. If a registrant cannot be accommodated, a full refund will be given.

PA Day/ Educational Workshops & Training

The Town of Essex runs a variety of training workshops for children on PA Days. Our trained and certified staff will ensure children spend the day learning and having fun in a safe environment.

My Safe Life – Personal Safety for Kids

Home Alone Training

Children learn life skills that empower them to make safe, caring and respectful decisions in their everyday lives both online and offline. Traditional gaming, digital media, video, role play and repetition are used to educate and engage children in a fun and interactive manner. Children can be dropped off after 8:30am. Fire Fighter and First Aid Training

Town of Essex firefighters will provide hands-on sessions including fire extinguisher training, using a fire hose, ladder training, and participants will be put through several challenges. This program is designed to learn what is involved in becoming a firefighter. Most of the day will take place on site at Essex Fire Station 1. The Lifesaving Society’s Swim for Life program is offered Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday for 45 minutes during camp hours - 1:45pm until 2:30pm. Staff will ensure your child is changed and ready to swim with our qualified swimming instructors at the designated time - it’s just one less thing for your “to-do list” this summer! Please sign up for the swimming lesson that coordinates to your child’s weekly day camp registration and your child will be placed in the appropriate level. Registration will close on the Friday at 4:30pm of the week before lessons begin. Register early – Don’t miss out! †

*Day Camp field trips are an optional add-on to camp for $25, and the location is subject to change based on weather conditions, number of campers, and availability at the site. Campers who decide not to participate in the field trip will have their regular daily activities to keep them busy!

Welcome witches, wizards and muggles! In this week of sports and games, campers will participate in fun filled adventures on Hogwarts ground. Campers will partake in wizarding traditions while being mentored by some of the most renowned witches and wizards of the new generation.

Clubhouse Colour Wars Colour Wars has finally arrived at the Essex Day Camp. Join us for a week of competition as Junior/Intermediate/ RED and BLUE go up against each other to win the Colour War Games. Senior Rescue 911 Junior/Intermediate

Safety first! Our camp rescuers will learn all about safety and emergency services. Activities will include a Jr. firefighter combat challenge, creating their own police badges and touring an ambulance.

Aren’t the Holidays a great time of year? Why not celebrate them all in one week. Campers will get to experience multiple Holidays through the weeks. Campers will get a chance to experience Christmas in August, Easter egg hunts in the middle of summer and New Year’s by the pool.

Financial Assistance

Community Services Department is able to offer financial assistance to youths 17 years and younger which will allow youths to participate in recreation programs. Canadian Tire believes that all kids should have the chance to run, skate, play and grow. Thatâ€™s why we created Canadian Tire Jumpstartâ„˘; a communitybased charitable program from the Canadian Tire Foundation for Families that helps kids in need participate in organized sports and recreational activities like hockey, soccer and swimming. The program will offer financial assistance to children 17 years and younger to participate in Essex Recreation and Culture programs.

Why exercise in the water? Water allows people to do exercises that are difficult on land. Up to 90% of your body is buoyant when in water up to your neck, so you are not hitting the floor as hard as you would on land. The water also continuously cools the body, so exercise in the water is cooler and more comfortable than it is on land.

Aquatic Fitness Spin H2O

Our Hydrorider Aquabikes are a truly unique piece of equipment. It features the attraction to group exercise, personal training and athletic training, physical therapy, rehabilitation, weight loss or just for fun! Ages 14+ Class time includes bike set up/removal.

The resistance is determined by four paddle wheels that are adjustable as well as by increasing RPM’s through acceleration which is a key component in aquatic conditioning. Additional challenges can be met by a change in seat positions, intervals or power pull techniques. Snug shorts and water shoes are recommended. Accessibility & General Info Swimming with Medical Conditions

The Lifesaving Society recognises that those with serious medical conditions (especially seizure disorders) are at a greater risk of drowning. The Essex Recreation Complex asks those with seizure disorders or other serious medical conditions are always accompanied and supervised by someone who is familiar with their condition. Swimmers with seizure disorders should always wear a lifejacket or PFD, which are free to use. Support Persons

Accessible Features at the Essex Rec Complex:

Support person is defined as another person who accompanies a person with a disability in order to help him or her with communication, mobility, personal care, medical needs, or with access to goods or services. If participation in the program is necessary, support persons will not be charged an admission fee. Please be aware that in case of emergency, support persons may be asked to assist wherever needed.

General Pool Information - Please shower with soap and water before you enter the pool. - Food and drinks in glass containers are not allowed on deck or in the viewing area. - Children in diapers must wear plastic pants (snug to leg) or swim diapers when entering the pool. Washable or disposable diapers are available for purchase. - Please have children visit the washroom and shower before entering the pool. - Proper swimwear required in the pool. T-shirts, cover ups and other clothing are not allowed. - Please do not bring floatation bathing suits, water wings, etc. PFDs are available for use. - Spectators must remain in the viewing area during all swims. - No camera use in the washrooms or change rooms. - To use the Training pool, those under 12 years old must have a parent or guardian with them in the water.

Pool Closures The pool may close unexpectedly due to a pool fouling, power failure, mechanical or maintenance problem. If this should occur during lessons, instructors will use the time on land to focus on water safety.

Parents - you no longer have to return to the pool because your kids are in different learn to swim levels! Register at the Essex Recreation Complex and we will separate them into different classes and ensure you are not here for long. No matter how many children you have or what swim levels they are at, we want to make it convenient for your family to learn to swim.

1. Choose a time block that works with your family’s schedule and let us match them with the group that best suits their needs – swimmers may be moved throughout the session if necessary. 2. Families with multiple children may be eligible for a discount upon registering with full payment for Sibling Lessons. Post-dated payment option available (Credit Card/Cheque/Electronic Fund Transfer) when provided at time of registration.
