Local News New Radio Station Launch: Marcher Vibe Wrexham’s airwaves are getting a fresh, local voice with the launch of Marcher Vibe, a new radio station going live at 7am on Monday 5 January 2026. The station promises a feel-good sound, focused entirely on the city, blending music, community, and local energy. Dave Lee, the driving force behind Marcher Vibe, will also host the station’s flagship breakfast show. Speaking about the launch, he said: “I’ve always wanted to create a station that really reflects Wrexham - its people, its stories, and its spirit. Marcher Vibe is all about giving the city a proper local voice, with great music and a real sense of community from the very first show.” Marcher Vibe will feature a mix of great contemporary hits and classic favourites, alongside personality-led content and stories that matter to Wrexham residents. The station also aims to spotlight local events, businesses, and initiatives, making it a true hub for the community. Listeners can tune in online (www.marchervibe.co.uk), via the Marcher Vibe app, or by asking Alexa to “enable ‘Marcher Vibe”, whether at home, at work, or on the move.

Samaritans ‘Brew Monday’ This January, Samaritans are taking on the infamous “Blue Monday” with a heartwarming twist. The socalled “most difficult day of the year,” the third Monday of January, was actually invented by a travel company to boost holiday sales, but Samaritans are keen to set the record straight. At Wrexham General Station on Monday 19 January 2026, volunteers from Samaritans will be handing out tea bags as part of Brew Monday, encouraging people to share a cuppa and a moment of connection. “The tea bag holds so much symbolism,” says a Samaritans spokesperson. “It reminds us of the little things that bring us together, whether it’s sharing a brew, a chat with a friend, or simply taking a moment to pause and reflect. Our volunteers are here 24/7 to listen and support anyone in crisis, and Brew Monday is a small way to make someone’s day a little brighter.” Samaritans emphasise that feeling low isn’t limited to a single day in January, or even to Mondays. Brew Monday is about taking time for yourself, connecting with others, and spreading a bit of warmth and kindness. In Wrexham, the station will be a hub for this simple yet powerful gesture, helping to replace the “blue” with a little bit of “brew”.
School Essentials Grant Applications The Welsh Government’s School Essentials Grant supports low-income families with the cost of essential school items. It can be used to cover PE kits and sports clothing, bags, stationery, laptops and tablets, uniforms for activities such as scouts, guides and sports clubs, specialist equipment for subjects like design and technology, and items needed for trips and outdoor learning, including waterproofs. Who can apply? Children from Reception to Year 11 may receive £125, while those starting Year 7 can receive £200. Eligible children include those receiving free school meals, and attending a Wrexham school, plus all looked-after children. Pupils aged 4–15 in special schools, special needs bases or pupil referral units are also included.

Your Photos, Sorted By EssentialsMAG tech contributor DAVID HUGHES If your phone is bursting with photos, you’re not alone. Phone cameras have become so good in the last few years, and so much easier than using a dedicated camera, that most of us now have thousands of pictures in our pockets. January is the perfect time for a photo clear-out and a proper backup, so those memories don’t get lost in the digital abyss. Where are all my photos actually stored? Usually, photos live in one (or both) of these places: On your device: your phone or tablet. In the cloud: if you have backup or photo sync turned on. ‘The cloud’ simply means online storage provided by companies like Apple, Google or Amazon. Your photos are stored on their secure servers rather than only on your phone. So if your device is lost, stolen or damaged, your photos should still be safe. Why store photos in the cloud? As well as keeping them safe, cloud photo services let you do more with your images: Organise easily Create albums and folders. You can also make shared albums, so friends and family can automatically see new photos when you add them. Search using normal words Type “dog”, “beach” or “birthday” and it will find matching photos using image recognition.

Declutter tools Many services can spot duplicates or nearidentical photos so you can keep the best and delete the rest. Which service do you use? • Apple iCloud Photos works seamlessly on iPhones and iPads. • Google Photos is available on both Apple and Android devices. • Amazon Photos offers unlimited photo storage if you’re an Amazon Prime member and works across different devices. Printed photos still matter Just because photos live on a screen doesn’t mean they should stay there. Photo books, canvas prints, calendars or digital photo frames are lovely ways to bring them back to life; rather than leaving them buried in your camera roll. You can now print photos in supermarkets and places like Max Spielmann. You simply connect your phone (no USB stick required), pick your photos, and within minutes you’ve got real prints to take home. A little effort, a big relief You don’t need to be a tech expert to get your photos in order. It does take a bit of time, but a quick tidy and a proper backup means your memories are safer, easier to find and a lot less overwhelming. Discover Wrexham’s Hidden Stories By SANDRA ALLEN, The Friends of Wrexham Museums The Friends of Wrexham Museums play a vital role in celebrating and protecting the area’s rich history. Made up of enthusiastic supporters, volunteers and local heritage lovers, the group works to champion the museum, raise awareness of its work, and help ensure that Wrexham’s stories are preserved for future generations. Their passion for local history shines through in everything they do, but one of their most popular contributions is their programme of monthly talks. These talks have become a highlight for many people. Held once a month, they offer an engaging and accessible way to explore different aspects of Wrexham’s past, as well as Welsh history more widely. Each session features a guest speaker - often a historian, researcher, author or specialist - who brings their subject to life with knowledge, insight and enthusiasm. Topics vary from month to month, which means there is always something new to discover. Previous talks have explored the area’s industrial heritage, significant local events, archaeological finds, notable historic figures, and the stories behind familiar buildings and landmarks. Some talks give a behind-the-scenes glimpse into museum work, shining a light on how objects are cared for, catalogued and displayed. Others take a broader view, exploring fascinating themes in Welsh culture, society or tradition.

Whether you’re a lifelong history enthusiast or simply curious about the place you call home, there is always something to learn. The monthly talks also offer a welcoming, social atmosphere. By supporting the Friends of Wrexham Museums, members also help fund projects, exhibitions and educational activities that enhance the museum’s work. Every membership, donation and event ticket contributes to safeguarding the area’s heritage and making it accessible to everyone. An Adventure in Antarctica By LIZZY WATTS, Delmar World The journey to reach Antarctica was an adventure in itself: it included two flights, an overnight stay in Buenos Aires, another flight, an overnight stay in Ushuaia, and two days crossing the Drake Passage - each leg taking progressively further south. But the effort was more than worth it. Having returned only recently, I am still reflecting on what can only be described as the singular most extraordinary place I have ever visited. Our vessel, MV Greg Mortimer, reached the Antarctic Peninsula late in the evening, unveiling an impressive landscape dominated by snow and ice. Gentle snowy slopes contrasted with rugged landforms and, as my eyes adjusted to the pristine wilderness, I observed a white expanse punctuated by imposing peaks and cliffs evidence of the vast continent lying beneath the frozen surface. Antarctica is defined by its extremes. It is the coldest, windiest, and driest continent. Despite containing a significant proportion of the world’s water, it actually meets the criteria for classification as a desert. The region’s wild, inhospitable environment is both awe-inspiring and profoundly humbling. During the voyage, we navigated through scenic bays surrounded by towering glaciers and appreciated the intricate patterns in the myriad folds of snow. We observed icebergs

rolling and sea-ice drifting with the currents. Attentive to the distinctive exhalations of humpback whales, we waited to glimpse their tail flukes as they dived to feed. Orcas were seen swimming in the distance, distinguished by their characteristic black and white markings - a remarkable sight in their natural environment. Encounters with penguins were frequent and delightful; we observed their nesting behaviours, watched them protect their eggs, and tracked their semi-agile movements on land and torpedolike movement through the waters. Penguins could also be seen atop large icebergs and accompanied us at every landing and zodiac excursion, offering countless opportunities for observation and delight. Our ship offered the latest in polarexpedition technology and comfort.

The X-Bow design sliced through the icy sea and, with only around 100 people on board, the opportunity to explore was maximised but always in accordance with the latest IAATO guidance and respect for the environment and strict wildlife protocols. I had the opportunity to participate in several adventurous activities during my trip. I wore a protective dry suit while kayaking amongst icebergs and donned an even more protective dry suit for snorkelling alongside smaller ice formations. A group – called a raft – of penguins even swam right underneath me! Additionally, I explored the snowy terrain using snowshoes and spent a night sleeping on the snow, cosy in my specialist coldweather sleeping bag, accompanied by the sounds of humpback whales and creaking glaciers - an experience that was truly unforgettable. Each day in Antarctica surpassed the last, leaving me increasingly captivated by its unique beauty. It is evident that Antarctica stands unparalleled and has long held a place at the top of my travel “bucket list”: having now been there, I know that no other destination will ever compare. I hope everyone had a good Christmas break, and is looking forward to 2026. This year is another big one for us, with Wrexham’s ‘Year of Wonder’ celebrating 150-years since a pivotal year in 1876, where the city hosted several significant events such as the first National Eisteddfod and saw the formation of the Welsh FA. This year, there’ll be commemorative celebrations, events and later this year, the re-opening of Wrexham Museum which will be home to the new National Football Museum of Wales. We’ll also welcome the official opening in the Spring of the much anticipated Stori Brymbo, a 300-million year old fossil forest next to the refurbished ironworks which is already getting global attention.
Christmas. Our independents especially need that bit of extra support to kick start the year – and we’ll be running campaigns over the next couple of months to try and help raise awareness of our great places to visit, eat and even just pick up a coffee. Finally, January also brings trade show season, and we’ll be at the Britain & Ireland Marketplace event in London later this month to promote the very best of Wrexham to travel buyers with our new industry brochure, and hoping to put Wrexham further on the map for leisure and business stays in 2026/27! My February update will bring news of something very special and iconic for Wrexham too – it may already be out, but I’ll tell the story behind it when you read your next copy of EssentialsMAG.

Ysgol Penygelli Latest News By DION GRIFFITHS, Headteacher, Ysgol Penygelli This Christmas season, Ysgol Penygelli was alive with energy, excitement, and a true sense of community spirit. The school was transformed into a bustling festive hub, with children, staff, families, and the wider community coming together to celebrate everything that makes Christmas so special. One of the standout highlights was the children’s Christmas activities. Their concerts, performed with confidence and enthusiasm, filled the school with music and magic. The school hall underwent a remarkable transformation throughout the shows at times becoming a peaceful church scene, at others a rustic stable setting. Each backdrop helping to bring the children’s storytelling and singing to life. Their hard work and dedication shone through in every performance, and they made us all incredibly proud. Beyond the concerts, the run-up to Christmas was just as busy and joyful. The school hosted a hugely successful Prize Bingo evening, drawing a packed house for a night full of fun. It was wonderful to see families and community members gathered together, sharing in the festive spirit. The Christmas Fayre at Ysgol Penygelli was another triumph, offering a fantastic range of stalls, games, and seasonal treats. The PTA also played a major role in representing the school at the Coedpoeth Community Christmas Fayre, helping to spread Penygelli cheer throughout the village. Their hard

work and commitment truly showcased the strong connection between the school and the wider community. Adding a warm and heartfelt touch to the season, the children had also been out in the village carol singing, bringing festive joy to local shops and care homes. Their voices lifted spirits wherever they went. Alongside this, pupils were been busy in the kitchen, baking delicious treats and creating thoughtful hampers for residents in local care homes. This theme of giving back has been at the heart of the school’s winter celebrations, reflecting the kindness and generosity that make Ysgol Penygelli so special. Nursery applications open in January for children joining us in September 2026. Please look out for our open days. We also have spaces in other year groups and are always excited to welcome new families into our Penygelli community. PREP: 15 minutes
COOK: 45 minutes
METHOD: Place all ingredients in an electric mixer (or use a hand mixer). Whisk on medium speed for 10 minutes until light and airy. Grease a 9‑inch mould with olive oil and pour in the cheesecake mixture. Bake in a preheated oven at 220°C for 20 minutes. Reduce the heat to 190°C and bake for a further 25–30 minutes, until almost set with a slight wobble. Allow to cool completely, then refrigerate overnight. De‑mould, slice, and serve with your choice of fresh fruit, compote, coulis, or a drizzle of honey.

Seasonal Treats in January
Keep the cold and dark at bay with flavourrich ingredients that are in season now… Mussels Rope-grown and in peak, plump condition, British and Irish mussels are a real treat on dark January evenings. They’re very easy to cook but need to be eaten the day you buy them and they do require a wee bit of prep. First, wash in a bowl of cold water and pull off the “beards” – the brown hairy stuff dangling from the shell’s hinge. Give any that are open a good tap and if they don’t shut, discard – they are dead and not safe to eat. Next, heat a large pan, add the mussels and a little water or white wine, then put the lid on and steam for a couple of minutes until all the shells have opened. Serve as they are or with a sauce – tomatoes with chilli are just the job on a cold night. Swede Swede is actually a brassica – a lumpen cross between the cabbage and the turnip, but with a sweet, earthy flavour that works beautifully with dairy. Also known in Scotland as ‘neeps’, it’s a stalwart of Burns Night, served as a coarsely mashed supporting act for the haggis. Alternatively, cut into chunks or chips, toss in olive oil and minced garlic then roast, topped with parmesan, until golden and simply irresistible.

Seville Oranges Home-made marmalade is a cut above the supermarket versions. The key is to use Seville oranges, whose season runs from the end of December to mid-February and whose aromatic rind is vital for the tangy, bitter-sweet flavour. To ensure your marmalade is up to Paddington Bear sandwich standards, soak the sliced peel overnight, cook with golden granulated sugar for a rich, caramel taste, and use a sugar thermometer so you know when it’s reached the setting point of 104.5°C. Venison High in protein and taste, venison is a great choice for January roasts or casseroles. To keep it tender, slow cooking is a must. Try diced venison in beef stock in a crockpot on low with mushrooms, chopped smoked streaky bacon, baby carrots and finely diced onion or leek, then either use as a pie filling or serve with seasonal veg – home-made dumplings or swede chips are a great accompaniment, too.

Nightingale House Hospice Phlebotomy Service Nightingale House Hospice is strengthening the support it provides to people living with life-limiting and progressive illnesses by offering an onsite phlebotomy service, making essential blood tests more accessible for patients under its care. For many patients, accessing routine blood tests through traditional routes has become increasingly challenging. Long waiting times and difficulties securing NHS appointments can delay test results, which in turn can lead to delays in treatment and additional stress during already vulnerable times. To ease this pressure, a number of the Clinical Team at Nightingale House are fully trained to take blood samples from patients who are currently accessing their support, who need them. Their team can provide phlebotomy appointments at the hospice, ensuring patients receive timely, coordinated support in a familiar and comforting environment. Phlebotomy appointments are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, between 9am and 2pm to align with NHS blood collection courier schedules.
House Hospice, highlighted the importance of this service for patients, saying: “As part of the Wellbeing Team, I see firsthand how difficult it can be for patients to access routine blood tests in the community. By offering phlebotomy appointments here at the hospice, we remove a layer of worry and give people timely access to tests that are often crucial in managing symptoms or planning treatment. “What matters most to us is personcentred care, and this service means patients can receive what they need in a calm and familiar space. Even the smallest thank you from a patient or their family reminds me how significant these moments of support are. It is a privilege to help people achieve their goals and wishes throughout their journey with us.” Nightingale House Hospice offers a wide range of services designed to support the physical, emotional and practical needs of people with life limiting conditions.
Patients must have a valid blood form and be currently under the care of Nightingale House Hospice. Results continue to be monitored by the patient’s GP or hospital team. Appointments can be arranged by calling the hospice and asking to be connected to the Wellbeing Department.

Alyn Family Doctors Latest News Monday 19 January 2026 marks the start of cervical cancer prevention week. We aim to raise awareness, encourage cervical screening and promote the HPV vaccine, all with the goal of saving lies and working towards a future free from the disease. Every day in the UK, two women die from cervical cancer, yet it’s one of the most preventable cancers. Our aim is to ensure all women and people with a cervix know how we can prevent cervical cancer. Cervical screening Cervical screening is a test to check the health of your cervix. Women and people with a cervix aged 25-64 are screened every five years. If you are aged 65+ and have never had a cervical screening test, you can ask to have one. Cervical screening can help stop cancer before it starts. Screening checks for the HPV virus. HPV is a common virus that spreads through skin contact (usually during sexual intercourse). Some types of HPV can cause cell changes to your cervix. These cell changes can be easily treated and prevents cervical cancer. Knowing the symptoms of cervical cancer Early-stage cervical cancer may not cause any symptoms. It is usually found and treated because of cervical screening tests.
Common symptoms of cervical cancer include: • Heavier periods than you normally have • Vaginal bleeding between periods, after sex, or after the menopause. If you get symptoms between your regular cervical screening appointments, do not wait for your next appointment. Talk to your GP or practice nurse and get checked. HPV vaccination The HPV vaccine reduces your chances of getting HPV (human papillomavirus). The vaccine is recommended for children aged 12 to 13 years old. The HPV vaccine is given as an injection into your arm and usually administered by a school nurse.

In the run up to Christmas, I visited a group of dedicated volunteers who are doing all they can to save a much-loved charity shop that offers vital support to veterans. Woody’s Lodge opened its very first shop in Wrexham 18 months ago but the volunteers have now launched an urgent appeal to help ensure its doors remain open, and I have pledged my support for the campaign. Located on Chester Street and part of the Tŷ Pawb complex, Woody’s Lodge is more than just a shop; it is a community hub for veterans, former emergency service personnel and their families. The charity provides practical assistance, such as mental health support and housing and benefits advice, as well as social engagement activities and a safe and welcoming place where individuals feel connected and looked after. The devoted team of volunteers, led by Andrea and Carl, are determined to do all they can to save the shop. They have been in regular communication with Wrexham Council but have struggled to get satisfactory support so far. Andrea even wrote to the King and the Prince of Wales, who were kind enough to respond and offer their moral support.
It is clear Woody’s Lodge is so much more than a charity shop. In a relatively short space of time, the volunteers have developed strong bonds with the community and the shop is a safe haven for many veterans and ex-emergency service personnel in Wrexham. Having a visible presence in the community is key and every purchase made at the shop directly supports the charity’s work, helping sustain the Wrexham hub and expand its reach across our region. Sadly, Woody’s Lodge is in a precarious financial position. Whether through donations, volunteering or simple spreading the word, I urge the community to do all it can to help save the shop. There are a number of fundraising events on the horizon and all the latest information, including how you can donate to the cause, can be found on Woody’s Lodge Facebook page.
