Esquimalt

Inside, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to stay active, try something new, and connect with friends and neighbours through the many programs and activities offered by Esquimalt Recreation. Whether you’re looking to improve your fitness, explore a new hobby, or spend quality time with family and community, there’s something for everyone this season.
This edition is especially meaningful to me, as I prepare to retire after 18 years of serving as Mayor of Esquimalt. It has been a privilege to work alongside residents, volunteers, community organizations, staff, and Council to help build the vibrant and welcoming community we enjoy today. I am grateful for the many opportunities I’ve had to celebrate local successes, support community initiatives, and witness the spirit that makes Esquimalt a special and unique place to live, work and play. It truly is “The Place to Be.”
This year, the Township completed a new Recreation Strategic Plan that will help guide recreation services, programs, and facilities over the next 15 years. Informed by community feedback, recreation trends, and facility needs, the plan will help ensure recreation opportunities remain inclusive, accessible, and responsive to the interests of residents of all ages and abilities.
As I reflect on my time as Mayor, one thing remains clear: strong communities are built through participation. Whether it’s joining a program, volunteering, attending an event, or supporting a neighbour, every contribution helps strengthen the connections that make Esquimalt thrive.
This fall, there are many exciting ways to get involved. Community favourites return, including Story Fest, Social Saturdays, Ribfest, and a wide variety of recreation and fitness programs designed to keep you moving, learning, and connecting. As winter approaches, watch for the Recreation Centre and Archie Browning Sports Centre to transform with festive holiday cheer, and be sure to join us for beloved traditions like Skate with Santa and the Seniors Appreciation Tea.
Thank you for the honour of serving this community for the past 18 years. I am proud of all we have accomplished together and look forward to seeing many of you enjoying everything Esquimalt has to offer this season.

The season of sparkle is here and we are excited to help you create stunning porcelain ornaments that glow beautifully in direct light, perfect for your tree or as thoughtful gifts. We provide a wide variety of holiday and general-shaped cookie cutters, along with many ways to add textures and patterns for dimension and interest. If you have specific shapes, designs, or textures you would like to include, fee free to bring them with you to further personalize your piece. Bring the ornaments from your imagination to life and take home hand-crafted treasures that will catch the light and shine all season long. These ornaments will be fired twice with no glaze to maintain translucency and capture the delicate nature of porcelain. These ornaments have been designed to remain white (unglazed). If you are interested in glazed ornaments, please see the “Christmas Ornaments” workshop.
In this workshop you will learn how to:
• roll out a clay slab
• decorate with stamps and textures
• finish surfaces to minimize sharp areas
• optimize the functionality of your piece
This is a relaxed, 1-hour hands-on experience where you’ll leave with something unique and entirely your own. All materials provided, with small class sizes and patient instructors.

Meditation - Creating a Path to a Peaceful and Happy Mind R/D
Although everyone has a mind, most of us only have a vague understanding of its nature and functions. If we are unaware of the different types of mind, how they are generated, and what effect they have on our lives, we will not be able to distinguish beneficial minds from non-beneficial minds, and we won’t know which minds to cultivate and which to abandon. In this series we will discuss Buddha’s teachings on the mind and meditate on states of mind that lead to peace and happiness.

Meditation ...How to Cultivate a Loving Heart and Truly Help Others R/D
We all feel compassion for our family and friends but often find it difficult to care for those we don’t know or don’t understand. Buddha taught that giving is primarily a mental action motivated by our compassion for others. We can give material things, but also our love, protection, our time and good advice. In this series we will learn to expand our circle of compassion and understand how to be more successful at helping others.

Enhance the efficiency of posture and movement with Postural Pilates, a comprehensive approach that integrates Pilates principles with neuromuscular programming. This class is designed to address the underlying issues that can inhibit strength and contribute to inefficient movement patterns.
Abdominal muscles are best engaged when they are integrated with the whole body to increase full body energy and vitality. When exercise is layered into a poor pattern of movement, more pain and dysfunction follow. Dance at the Gorge Pavilion
5Rhythms is a movement meditation, a full-body workout, and a wild, grounding journey all in one. It’s a conscious dance practice that uses dance to wake up every part of you: your body, your emotions, your instincts, your creativity. In this class, you will receive guidance to move through the 5Rhythms Wave — Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, Stillness — each one a different state of being, each one unlocking something new. The music is wide-ranging, soul-stirring, and mixed live by Anne Marie Hogya – a longtime 5Rhythms teacher, DJ, and occupational therapist. Her dance floors are alive with possibility: equal parts medicine, adventure, and permission to move exactly as you are. No experience needed, no steps to learn. All bodies, all abilities, all ages (15+) welcome.

Esquimalt Parks & Recreation would like to provide an update on the Arena Slab Replacement Project. Due to unforeseen construction and project requirements, the project timeline has been extended and is now expected to be completed by the end of November 2026.
While construction is progressing well, additional work is necessary to ensure the longterm quality, safety, and reliability of the facility. We recognize that this extension may be disappointing for arena users and community members, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we complete this important infrastructure investment.
The replacement of the arena slab is a significant renewal project that will help ensure the facility continues to serve the community for many years to come. Staff and contractors remain focused on completing the project as efficiently as possible while maintaining high standards of workmanship.
We will continue to provide updates as key milestones are reached and look forward to welcoming user groups and the public back to the facility once the project is complete.
Thank you for your continued support and patience.
