Getting in Shape for Camp Phantasy Camp is designed for adults who enjoy playing baseball or softball rather than for fitness fanatics. Still, the program is designed to keep you very active. You will be playing baseball every day. Age is unimportant when it comes to your ability to play baseball – the more important consideration is your physical condition. If you haven’t played in recent years, please be aware of the sort of trip you’re taking. It’s an active one. You’ll enjoy your experience more if you exercise before you go. Activities that involve aerobic conditioning such as swimming, walking, jogging, biking, squash, and tennis are great for overall physical conditioning.
What We Recommend Before your trip begins, try to do exercises that involve aerobic conditioning 3 times each week – biking, swimming, walking, jogging, squash, cross-country skiing, tennis, and/or riding a stationary exercise bike. ONE MONTH BEFORE THE TRIP:
• Try to throw and hit a few times per week. •T hrow with a partner or against a wall starting at a close distance. •A s your arm warms up, stretch the distance. For hitting, find your local batting cages and either take a few rounds in the cage or practice hitting off a batting tee. You can also practice by just swinging a bat in a gym, basement or other open space. Also begin the enclosed stretching routine at least three times per week. THE WEEK BEFORE YOUR TRIP:
•T ry to throw every day for 15 minutes close at first and then increasing the distance as your arm begins to warm up. Also, work in swinging or hitting each day (if possible). •B e sure to stretch before exercising. It reduces chances of injury, muscle pain, stiffness, and fatigue.

Weather Typically 50˚F to 70˚F in January in Clearwater The weather is one of the few details we cannot control. That being said, the climate in Clearwater is typically mild in January, the average low and high temperatures are 50˚F and 70˚F, respectively. Therefore, plan to bring sweatshirts, jackets or coats to compensate for low seasonable temperatures when you are off the field. You can always remove or add layers to adjust for the weather.
What to Pack We post which authentic Phillies uniform your team will be donning on the clubhouse TVs each morning. After games are finished and showers taken, you can decide on your evening attire. The trend for professional athletes is more casual now than in the past. Few restaurants in Clearwater Beach require a jacket and tie for men. The attire for the evening events will remain “smart casual,” so we recommend packing a jacket and tie (just in case you want to wear them for the awards banquet), slacks, and button downs for the men; and pant suits, slacks or skirts for the ladies. There are also plenty of opportunities to slide into your favorite jeans and polo shirt.
Everyday Items Sports coat and tie (for men) or evening attire (for women) Button down shirts Jeans and/or casual pants Short sleeve or polo shirts Windbreaker, sweatshirt, jacket and/or coat Sweatpants/wind pants Dress and casual shoes Sneakers (required for use in the indoor batting tunnels) Shorts (workout/casual) T-shirts Underwear Socks Belt (dress and casual) Toiletries (deodorant, comb/brush, razor, shaving cream, etc.) Sunscreen Sunglasses (if necessary) Veteran Players: White Jersey and Pants 11 | Phillies Phantasy Camp
Baseball Gear Provided at Camp You will receive the following items at camp: • Cap • Long Sleeved Undershirt • Home Jersey • Batting Practice Jersey
• Pants • Belt • T-shirt • Socks
Your authentic Phillies uniform will be cleaned each day by the clubhouse staff.
Clubhouse and Field Needs Because you will be living the dream of a Major Leaguer, we will supply you with the basics and then some; however, it would be a good idea to have some personal items with you each day.
We suggest bringing the following: SHOWER SHOES The clubhouse staff will ensure that the entire facility is impeccably clean each day, but for sanitary reasons, we recommend you pack shower shoes for walking around the clubhouse and for use in the shower. UNDERNEATH THE UNIFORM PANTS It is highly recommended that you pack an athletic supporter with cup and compression or sliding shorts for underneath your uniform pants. If you plan to go all out and slide or get in front of that blazing ground ball, protection is essential. BATTING GLOVES A good pair of batting gloves will help prevent blisters on your hands. Batting gloves typically come in a variety of sizes ranging from Youth Small to Adult X-Large. Most brands will sell the left and right glove separately, so if you are only buying one, make sure you have made the correct choice. You can usually find the above items at your local sporting goods store. The rest of your authentic Phillies uniform will be hanging in your locker each morning, but every piece is important!
Phillies Phantasy Camp | 12
BASEBALL GLOVE We provide all the necessary equipment for your Major League experience. All you need to bring is your favorite baseball glove. A well broken-in glove will help you make that miraculous catch in center field instead of coming up empty. So, whether you plan on catching, pitching, or playing the field, you should bring the appropriate glove. CLEATS (NO METAL SPIKES) A good pair of baseball cleats are important to help prevent you from slipping while attempting to round second base. Imagine the look on your Manager’s face while you lay on the clay after being tagged out because the only thing between you and that extra base was the sneakers on your feet. Since many of our participants have not played baseball recently or on a regular basis, we suggest that if you do decide to purchase baseball shoes, you follow these recommendations: • Plastic or rubber soles only: Metal spikes are NOT permitted at any time. • Cleats are not allowed in the indoor batting tunnels. • Allow plenty of time to break in your new shoes before wearing them in game competition at Phantasy Camp. Blisters on your feet may affect your performance. • Baseball coaching/training or turf shoes are a good alternative to baseball cleats, if you are looking for more comfort. • Don’t forget to pack a few pairs of socks as well! SNEAKERS They say that good shoes take you good places and that is never more true than at Phantasy Camp. Make sure to have a sturdy pair of sneakers with you for traveling to and from the ballpark, stretching and warming up. Also, don’t forget that cleats are not permitted in the batting tunnels so sneakers will have to be worn. TRAVELING CLOTHES Although most Major Leaguers travel to and from the ballpark in a suit or sport coat, we leave that option up to you. Comfort is a necessity at all times including the bus ride from the hotel; therefore, no dress code is enforced for traveling to and from the ballpark each day. The choice is yours!

Laundry Your freshly laundered Phillies uniform will be hanging in your personalized locker each morning when you arrive. In addition to this, the Clearwater Beach Marriott Suites offers laundry service.
Blow Dryer, Iron, and Toiletries The Carpenter Complex will be stocked with all the after-shower necessities you will need to get ready for the evening activities. In addition, each room at the Clearwater Beach Marriott Suites will be equipped with a blow dryer, ironing board and iron, toiletries, and fresh towels and linens. A safe for your personal items is available in your room. A gift shop is also available at the hotel for any last minute items you may need.
Tipping On your Phantasy Camp trip, we take care of tipping porters and hotel staff, as well as restaurant staff for all the meals we enjoy together. In terms of the Clubhouse Staff and the Trainers, tipping is entirely discretionary, and we feel strongly that additional gratuities are not necessary unless you receive exemplary service. We expect that our Clubhouse Staff and Trainers will do a great job in making your trip memorable and, when they do, it is not uncommon for our participants to offer an additional gratuity. We are often asked what is appropriate. In general, we have found that when our participants offer a gratuity, it is in the range of $10 - $20 for the Clubhouse Staff and $10 - $20 for the Trainers’ services, in total, for the entire week.

Health Guidelines We have a few basic health guidelines that are very important for ensuring a safe, happy, and healthy time for everyone while in Clearwater. Please review the following guidelines and feel free to call the Phantasy Camp Headquarters if you have any further questions.
Medical Clearance Form We require that you supply us with an up-to-date Medical Clearance Form. It is important for us to know of any special medical conditions, ranging from minor to severe, so that we may best meet your needs. We do not want you to miss a day, so we urge you to return the Medical Clearance Form to us as soon as possible.
Medication All medication must be in its original container, with your name and the prescription label with dosage on the front.

Phillies Legends Since you will be playing alongside Phillies Legends the entire time you are there, you will have plenty of time to ask for baseball advice, snap a photo or get that autograph you have been waiting for. Every Phillies Legend is invited to each scheduled activity we offer.
Traditions Gamer Award Since the beginning of The Philadelphia Phillies Baseball Club in 1883, more than 2,000 players have worn the Phillies uniform; among them, Phillies’ all-time greats like Richie Ashburn, Robin Roberts, Darren Daulton, and Mike Schmidt and modern day players like Aaron Nola, Bryce Harper, Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, and Chase Utley. These players are a cut above the rest. Their mere presence in the lineup is enough to motivate. On the field, these players consistently set the example, which all players try to follow. Day after day, they step up and are the “Gamers” of their team. Phillies Phantasy Camp carries on the rich tradition of The Philadelphia Phillies by awarding players who excel during games with the official “Gamer Award” pin. Gamers can be earned each day and are presented by the Commissioner, Managers, Coaches, and/or Player Representatives.
Most Valuable Player Without this player, your team would not be complete. The MVP is someone who consistently rises to the occasion; hitting in the clutch, making the big defensive stop, and leading by example on and off the field. At Phillies Phantasy Camp, one player from each team will be bestowed Most Valuable Player honors, signifying the “best of the best.”
Mike Lieberthal Award Every pitcher needs a great battery mate. Named after the Phillies catching great Mike Lieberthal, who holds the Phillies all-time record for games caught. This award is presented to the players who most resemble his “Iron Man” mentality and play. These unsung heroes of Phillies Phantasy Camp have caught over 80% of their teams’ innings behind the plate.
Phillies Phantasy Camp | 24
Ryan Howard Rookie of the Year Award The Ryan Howard Rookie of the Year Award is given annually to an outstanding first-year player who has made positive contributions to their team and to Phillies Phantasy Camp.
Gold Glove Award Each year, Major League Baseball honors a player in each position for fielding excellence. The honor bestowed upon these players is called the Gold Glove Award. These players consistently practice and perform at an almost error-free level. Phillies Phantasy Camp’s highest personal fielding achievement, The Gold Glove Award, is presented to one player who consistently exceeds their peers in fielding, range, arm accuracy, and consistency. This award is presented at the Awards Banquet.
Batting Champion At Phillies Phantasy Camp, one player will be named Phillies Phantasy Camp’s Batting Champion. Voted by managers and coaches, the Batting Champion represents excellence in batting, contact, and clutch hitting. The Batting Champion Award is presented at the Awards Banquet.
Cy Young Award Phillies Phantasy Camp honors one individual who best demonstrates poise, confidence, and presence on the mound. While their ERA and walks may be low and their conviction high, they perform at an effortless and even pace. They consistently set-up each batter with every pitch, never letting them get comfortable in the box. One player will receive the Cy Young Award at the Awards Banquet.
David Montgomery Heart and Hustle Award Every Major League manager is looking for the player who will be the spark plug for the entire team. They set the tone; getting on base, moving into scoring position or stealing home. At Phillies Phantasy Camp, the player who consistently adds the “spark” to their team by making things happen, will be honored with the Heart and Hustle Award. The Heart and Hustle Award is presented at the Awards Banquet.
Championship Trophy Every pro team in the Majors plays each game with one thought in mind; “the playoffs.” Few teams make the playoffs and only one elite team can win it all and become “World Champions.” At Phillies

Maje McDonnell Award Every team has one player that you could spend hours talking to, hearing “behind the scenes” stories of yesteryear from, and reliving games and situations with. This award goes to the player who has personality plus and is a class act both on and off the field. That is why we have created an award named after Maje McDonnell. Maje started his long playing and coaching career at his alma maters Northeast High School and Villanova University, where he captained both the baseball and the basketball teams. He joined the Phillies in 1947 and was a member of the “Whiz Kids” Pennant-winning season of 1950. Maje was inducted into the Villanova Hall of Fame, the Northeast High School Hall of Fame, the Philadelphia Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, and the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. He also earned four World Series rings as a member of the Phillies Organization.
The Tug McGraw Inspiration Award Throughout the history of the Philadelphia Phillies, few have touched the hearts of fans like Frank “Tug” McGraw. Early in his career, he sparked the 1969 “Miracle Mets” to a World Championship and was a driving force in the Mets’ improbable 1973 World Series drive exclaiming his rally cry, “You Gotta Believe!” Tug paid immediate dividends after being traded to the Phillies in 1975, saving 14 games and posting a 2.97 earned run average. He inspired his team as the Phillies rolled to win three straight National League East Championships. His greatest on-field achievement came during the 1980 season when from mid-July to the post season he was virtually untouchable, allowing only three earned runs over 52 1/3 innings and 33 games. During the end of the magical 1980 season, Tug helped close the door on a critical Montreal Expos series, striking out five of the last six Expo hitters he faced. The next day the Phillies clinched the National League East title. Throughout the infamous NLCS against the Houston Astros, Tug pitched in all five games and when it came to the World Series

against the Kansas City Royals, McGraw pitched in four of the six games, winning Game Five and saving the opener and clincher. He struck out 10 Royals in eight innings, including the famous fanning of Willie Wilson that touched-off a citywide celebration that would last for days. Phillies fans of all ages can still picture the final strikeout and Tug throwing his arms in the air and cheering, waiting for his teammates to jump on him at the mound. Even after his retirement in 1984, Tug continued to inspire and warm the hearts of Philadelphia Phillies fans, and baseball fans across the country. Perhaps his greatest inspiration came during his long bout with brain cancer, where he remained a force of positive energy and attitude. Although Tug McGraw lost his battle with brain cancer, he continues to warm our hearts and add inspiration to our lives. This special award is given to the Phantasy Camp Player who is an inspiration to us all — their teammates, Legends and Managers.
The Darren Daulton Leadership Award Phillies’ broadcast legend and Hall of Famer Harry Kalas, referred to Darren as the “all-time clubhouse leader of the Philadelphia Phillies”, a sentiment shared by anyone who played with him. Darren was drafted by the Phillies in 1980 and three years later at the age of 21, broke into the majors. His 17-year professional career includes numerous accolades for outstanding play; among them are three trips to the Midsummer Classic (Phillies All-Star 1992-93, 1995) and the Silver Slugger Award in 1992 - his personal best offensive season where he led the National League in RBI (109) and finished in the Top 10 in: on base percentage; slugging percentage; OPS; home runs; walks; runs created; and extra base hits. That season, he was also among top vote-getters for the National League MVP Award. The next season (1993), Darren produced an almost identical offensive season helping the Phillies capture the National League Pennant and the hearts of Philadelphians. Darren’s gritty determination, passion and clubhouse presence earned him the respect of “Macho Row”, a group of over-sized personalities. Darren ended his playing career in 1997, but not before catching over 7,900 innings, persevering through nine knee surgeries, and helping the Florida Marlins win a World Series Championship. The Phillies honored Darren in 2010 by inducting him onto the Wall of Fame. Dutch’s mark on Phillies history may be best summed up by legendary Phillies player and coach, John Vukovich; “I played with better players, I’ve coached better players, but in 32 years I never saw a bigger leader. For me, he set the standard of being a man.” This honor is awarded to the Phantasy Camp Player who best demonstrates the same standard of leadership.

The Rhéal Cormier Person of the Year Award Rhéal Cormier, nicknamed “Frenchy”, was known on the mound as a tough and durable southpaw relief pitcher, but off the diamond for his kindness and philanthropy. Throughout his entire career he was involved in several school programs, was a spokesman for teenage anti-suicide and anti-drug campaigns, and notably during his long tenure in Philadelphia, made generous contributions to Phillies Charities Inc. on a regular basis and visited patients in area hospitals. “Rheal was one of the most vibrant people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing,” said friend and former teammate Jim Thome. “He loved baseball, but he always put his family first. Frenchy was the kind of guy who would do anything for you and I’m lucky to have called him my friend for many years. Our time spent together in Philadelphia as teammates was unforgettable. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.” The Rhéal Cormier Person of the Year Award is given annually to a participant of Phillies Phantasy Camp whose off-field performance and contributions to their community as a volunteer inspire others to higher levels of achievement. The award was named after Cormier to honor his kindness and his legacy as a humanitarian and philanthropist.
Commissioner’s Court Keeping with the rich tradition of the Philadelphia Phillies and Major League Baseball, Commissioner’s Court will be in session daily to levy fines for infractions of baseball rules and etiquette on and off the field. Players convicted have the opportunity to plea their case to a higher court. Once the judges have ruled, the fine will stick and the guilty must pay.
Bull Session You will be in the company of Legends the entire week; people who were not just great ball players, but who wrote baseball history. During one unforgettable evening, the Phillies Phantasy Camp will bring them all together for a session of “Q and A.” The Legends will share stories of glory days, give insights about ex-teammates and field questions that you have been waiting to ask. The floor is yours for this “behind the scenes” look at the Phillies.
