AP Art Shows

Kathleen Raymond began the AP Art Program during the 1988-89 school year. Uasmin Succar was the first student to have an AP exhibit in 1989. The exhibits were held in the entry hall outside of the library. Back then, each senior AP art student had his/her own exhibit up for one or two weeks. They installed many fabulous one-person shows. When the Susan M. Frank Center opened, student exhibits became group shows in the Eagle Gallery. Former teacher Susan Sanders added the tradition of artist talks along with their exhibit.

Emotional Support Animal Mary’s Cross Award

The Mary Elizabeth Williams Award commemorates Mary’s outstanding leadership, academic achievement, and service to others. Her years at ESD were marked by her commitment to living by the values of our Founding Tenets. She was first a student, then a faculty member, and finally a parent of three lower school students: MaryBeth, Patrick, and John Robert. Mary’s life reflected her devotion to God and her family, as well as her compassion and concern for all those in need. This award is given to the fourthgrade boy and girl who exemplify Mary’s fine character and spirit. The first recipient of this award was Margaret Cannata.

Robert H. Dedman Lecture Series

The Robert H. Dedman Lecture Series was established in 2002 by the Dedman Foundation through the Communities Foundation of Texas, to honor Robert. H. Dedman. This lecture series, held twice a year for upper school students, provides a forum for students to meet and hear from community and national leaders about their philosophy on leadership and their own personal journey. Through interaction with these community leaders, ESD students learn firsthand about individual leadership success and methods for developing a successful leadership style.

Founded in 1906, the Cum Laude Society honors the academic achievement of students in secondary schools. ESD was granted its chapter in 2007, and a small percentage of seniors are inducted annually, recognized for their unwavering commitment to academic excellence. They receive a pin and certificate of membership to the Cum Laude Society.

Remote Learning Pin It On

In 2018, the year the lower school building was under construction, faculty, administration, and students dedicated time, thought, and energy in preparing to welcome and integrate lower school students to this campus. Students were an important part of this work and conversation. Three Student Advisory Councils were formed to envision how all three divisions — lower, middle, and upper — would exist and live together on one campus. One of the councils focused specifically on traditions, new and old. Another advisory council, composed of students only, brainstormed, discussed, and created a new tradition, a rite of passage, and named it Pin It On.
