LETTER FROM THE CHAIR

The 2024 Houston Jewish Film Festival marks our milestone 20th anniversary! We look forward to hosting you once again at the beautiful new J. The film committee is very proud to present this year’s outstanding lineup. These films will challenge and inspire us, offering a window into new ideas and perspectives. On Opening Night we’ll be celebrating the festival’s 20th anniversary with a look back at our history and a reception preceding the film. We also look forward to hosting you at festive receptions prior to the romantic comedy, Matchmaking, on Saturday evening, and again following our closing night film, The Monkey House. We will be joined by filmmakers and special guests for conversation and unique perspectives on some of the themes raised in our films. We will recognize International Women’s Day just prior to the festival with Bella!, the story of Bella Abzug’s activism and legacy. We’re very fortunate to have her biographer speaking after the film. We’ll be welcoming an actor from the comedy, No Name Restaurant for the screening. The French Consul General of Houston will introduce the dramatic biopic, Simone, following a wine and cheese reception. The director and protagonist of the film Rabbi on the Block will join our general audience and our teens for their exclusive screening for a discussion after the film. Our film committee will also facilitate two informal post-screening conversations. The film committee is very delighted to unveil the winning shorts from our first ever Teen Short Film contest! Over the course of the festival, we will be highlighting the top films from our community’s next generation of creators and storytellers. We are grateful to longtime Film Festival supporters Mitzi Shure and Jerry Wische who continue to underwrite the festival. During the festival, the film committee is pleased to be recognizing the two decades of contributions made by our festival’s founders, Sharon Kagan and Doreen Joffe. Please join us following the film screening on April 1 for a toast to Sharon and Doreen! I want to express my gratitude to the incredible J staff, as well as our thoughtful and committed film committee members for their efforts throughout the process of evaluating films and sharing our festival plans enthusiastically with our community at large. We are so grateful for the generous and loyal support of the Margolis Family, our Patrons of the Arts, our festival donors, and community partners whose generosity makes our program possible. With Eichmann relegated to the background, the trio’s seemingly ordinary lives become intertwined in the extraordinary, seminal moment.
