Applications The Rexnord Autogard XG Series is aimed at twin screw extruder OEMs and users. It has been designed based on input from several machine builders from around the world.
Food extruders are used to make breakfast cereals, potato snacks, pasta and more besides. Industrial extruders are mostly used to mix components to make specific plastics ahead of further processing; and to make powder coating paint. Material is fed into a chamber containing the two co-rotating or counter-rotating screws where it is moved, mixed, kneaded, heated or cooled as it travels along the length of the chamber.

Upon exiting the extruder the output material can be pushed through a shaped die and cut to make a finished product if required. The screws of the extruder are easily damaged during the extrusion process if the viscosity of the material thickens and torque exerted on them increases. To clean out the screws or take them out for repair is a lengthy task and the process up-time of extruders is highly valued. To protect the equipment and maintain up-time a torque limiter is usually positioned between the motor and gearbox.
