Welcome to The Sharon® L. Morse Performing Arts Center! We are so grateful to re-open our doors after such a trying season. We invite you back to view the national and international performing art tours we host here for your entertainment. Much like the building’s namesake, my grandmother, Sharon L. Morse, we love all varieties of the performing arts here. It is in her memory that I, along with my amazing team of artists and arts administrators, strive to bring many different types of the highest quality entertainment here to The Sharon. Since opening in 2015, we hope we have established a relationship of trust; that any show at The Sharon will be a show worth seeing. Perhaps you find yourself here today to see a concert of one of your favorite musicians, or to take in the national tour of a Broadway show. Either way, we encourage you to consider trying out a new show that perhaps you haven’t heard of before, knowing that it has been intentionally curated by our team. We welcome you to The Sharon: a place for you to see an old favorite, but also a place to discover your new favorite. A NOTE FROM THE MAESTRO With this concert, we remember a dear person who has given so much to our community. A musician of extraordinary talent and skill. Hector Garrido was like a brother and friend. Above all, he was a person with whom we all shared wonderful musical moments. I dedicate this concert to his memory from the bottom of my heart. HECTOR GARRIDO Hector Luis Garrido, a world-class musician passed from this life in the morning hours on December 14th, 2021, while hospitalized in Cumming, GA following a massive stroke. He was an arranger, conductor, composer, songwriter, musical director and television and movie score writer. He was born to Petrona and Carlos Garrido at 5:35 pm on January 4th, 1937, in Buenos Aries, Argentina. The family lived modestly, occupying a two-bedroom apartment in Buenos Aries. Hector shared a bedroom with his brother Carlos. Hector began piano lessons at age 10 and took to music immediately. He also excelled at soccer. His music and soccer skills both increased rapidly and at age 17 Hector was playing the piano professionally in clubs in Buenos Aries and was approached by professional teams to play soccer. At that point his mother, Petrona, put her foot down and decreed, “Piano or Soccer!” The piano won. He continued his music and in 1962 came to the United States with a traveling band and got ‘gigs’ in this country. At one point the band traveled to Puerto Rico where Hector met a beautiful woman named Marina. He was struck with her, really struck with her – more than she was struck with him. Hector moved on to Chicago and began a furious letter writing campaign to Marina, in Puerto Rico. The sincerity of the letters convinced Marina to ‘give him another look.’ But, because of his the schedule he wasn’t going to see her again, though he vowed, somehow, someway he would win this wonderful woman. Fate intervened; Hector’s local gigs were canceled and the group’s manager got them booked in Puerto Rico once again. Marina then went to New York with her mother, reconnecting with Hector, and the love affair began. Hector and Marina were married in 1966. Hector and Marina raised four wonderful children, Yvonne, Mario, Alex and Kenny, and were blessed with ten grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. Hector’s first break in the music industry came when he was working in the Ed Sullivan building as a copyist with others, for the Sammy Davis, Jr television 4

A NOTE FROM THE MAESTRO show. Once the producers came to the copyists with a dilemma. A song for Mr. Davis was over two minutes long but had only a 1 minute and 30-second slot. The copyist was asked to reduce the music to 1:30 and maintain integrity in the piece. All answered ‘no’, except Hector who said, “I can do it.” He rearranged the song without affecting the melody or lyrics to a minute and 36 seconds. The producers gave him an unheard of at-the-time $5k bonus. From then on, he was copying and arranging and was the go-to guy for Sammy Davis’ music. Because of this feat, news of Hector’s accomplishments and abilities spread in the music industry. When he was available Mr. Sammy Davis, Jr., would attend Hector’s music functions Garrido was a large part of Gloria Estefan’s musical life for over 30 years. Hector knew Gloria when Gloria was in high school. He worked under contract with Gloria and her husband, Emilio Estefan, Jr. Hector was involved with writing, composing arranging and conducting many of the Miami Sound Machine band music for Gloria and Emilio during their years together. Another milestone for Hector was his composition “Te Voy a Regular Un Continente”, written in 1966 for Hugo Enriquez for his album Mas Alla Del Continente. This song and album pushed Enriquez to fame and a long career and participation in many of the OTI Festivals. The OTI Festivals are annual international competition for singers of Spanish and Portuguese songs. The festivals are held in cities with major Spanish and Portuguese speaking populations. Hector was a regular contributor to music played and sung during the OTI Festivals. The 1983 festival, held in Washington, D.C. featured Placido Domingo and his medley, which included Besame Mucho, arranged and conducted by Hector. They worked together on other occasions. Barry Manilow entered Hector’s life as Barry asked Hector to translate music and language for Barry’s 1978 song Copacabana and Manilow’s 1985 made-for-TV movie, Copacabana. Celi Bee had a wonderful run during the disco era and Hector arranged and conducted many of her songs and traveled with Celi for concert dates in the US and overseas. In 1986, Marina and Hector and two of their children moved to Miami at the urging of Latin music star Jose Luis Rodriquez, aka El Puma. Hector accepted the offer to produce, arranger and conduct for Rodriquez. Hector and Marina settled into the Miami area and Hector enjoyed his work with Jose, traveling extensively in the Central and South Americas with the group. Ricky Martin and Garrido collaborated on several tunes and occasions. Hector arranged a medley of the at that time recently deceased Frank Sinatra’s songs for Ricky’s appearance in Carnegie Hall in New York on the 1999 “Rock for the Rainforest” concert in April 1999. Ricky’s fifth studio album titled Ricky Martin credited Hector as conductor and arranger for several of the songs. Hector contributed to several other Ricky Martin recordings during his time with the Estefan Sound Machine organization. Further, during his time in Miami Hector worked with many other notables in the music business including Paul Anka and Songwriter Hall of Famer, Desmond Childs. Madonna entered his life while both were at a Sony Music party. Madonna heard that Hector was from Argentina and she insisted they get together. Madonna wanted to know all about the Argentinian culture as she was preparing for her role as Evita Peron in the movie of the same name. Hector gladly accommodated the star and they hit it off sensationally. Hector was credited for work on the original soundtrack of the Sylvester Stallone – Sharon Stone 1994 movie, The Specialist. The credits include; arranger, conductor, piano, programming, orchestration and composer. Latin singer Jon Secada released his biggest album, Amor, in 1995 with Hector conducting and arranging four of the songs on the album. Secada, the 1997 release by Jon Secada featured Hector as the conductor. Hector was involved with Jon Secda in many other works. Around 2005-06, with work with the Miami Sound Machine (now with Sony) slowing for Hector, and with Marina’s desire to leave the Miami area, they explored Central Florida as Marina had a sister in Lady Lake, FL. After a brief stay in the Atlanta area they settled in The Villages® in 2008. The then 71-yearold master musician was not about to retire in the comfort of The Villages. Hector played piano with the band Music Mixx, accompanying vocalist Michele Dio-Ehret. This band played every Saturday night at the Hacienda Country Club and Restaurant for over six years. Hector met and became good friends with Pasquale Valerio, musical director of The Village Philharmonic Orchestra. Hector was asked and arranged and played piano for the orchestra for several years, performing with Fernando Varela, the late Oscar Feliu and Marcella Richardson, among others. When the Church on the Square in Spanish Springs closed in June of 2013, Hector was honored for the final concert prior to the renovation. Hector was the pianist at The Unity Spiritual Center of The Villages for 10 years, working with musical director/vocalist Donna Fraley. In May of 2016, Hector produced and played in a Latin Fusion concert at Temple Shalom. Over the years, The Savanah Center hosted musicals and Hector was the musical director there for Gypsy, Mr. Music and Chicago.

A NOTE FROM THE MAESTRO Jon Secada opened The Sharon® L. Morse Performing Arts Center’s 2018-19 Season on Friday, August 17, 2018. At one point in the show Secada ask Hector to join him on stage and said of his dear friend Hector, “He was somebody who saw me grow as a studio artist in Miami.” Hector played a song on the piano as Secada sang. Along with Richardson, Dio-Ehert, and Fraley, Hector played with/for many other artists in The Villages, including Billie Thatcher and Tony Brown. Hector’s mother noted the time of his birth, 5:35 pm and said, “He will never work a day in his life.” And, because of his love of music, the love of his family, and their love of him, and his respect for and respect he received from his friends and musical family, Hector “... never worked a day in his life.”

PROGRAM NOTE Overture to Candide Leonard Bernstein (1918 - 1990) Leonard Bernstein, highly successful in so many musical endeavors, always told his friends that he wanted to write “the Great American Opera,” and many feel he came closest with Candide, which he described as “a comic operetta.” In 1759 Voltaire wrote a satire about the misadventures of the naive and purehearted Candide and his sweetheart, Cunégonde. In it, Voltaire takes a jab at the optimistic philosophy of his times, when his contemporary Gottfried Leibniz said that “all is for the best in this best of all possible worlds.” The story chronicles a host of man-made and natural disasters that make it difficult to believe that all is for the best. Bernstein and the much-admired playwright Lillian Hellman collaborated on a work that was based on the Voltaire story and made pointed reference to the artificially happy post-war attitude in America in 1956. It was clearly meant to be a political statement. Bernstein felt that Voltaire’s description of his own society with its snobbery, false morality and attacks on individuals was identical to the American society of the times, with the McCarthy witch-hunts being an example. Bernstein and Hellman worked on the play for two years and it opened in 1956 on Broadway. But Candide failed, closing after 73 performances. The Overture, however, took on a life of its own and made steady gains as an orchestral work. Loved for its scintillating and crackling rhythms, it incorporates tunes from the show, including “The Best of All Possible Worlds”, “Battle Music”, “Oh Happy We” and “Glitter and Be Gay”, a memorable soprano piece. It was meant to reflect the fast-paced adventures in Voltaire’s work, its comedy and its tender moments. Bernstein was very disappointed with the less-than-enthusiastic reception of Candide. He cared deeply about the work, of which he said, “There’s more of me in that piece than anything else I’ve done.” He kept tinkering with it over the years, and each time he revived it, the audiences were larger. In 1974, with a new libretto that emphasized humor and diluted the political and social themes, Candide was again introduced to Broadway, where it saw 741 performances. But in 1989, one year before his death, Bernstein sought to restore the integrity of his original work, and he gave Candide one more overhaul. A full-length recording of that final revision preserves Bernstein’s last thoughts on his favorite composition.

PROGRAM NOTE Rhapsody in Blue In the early twentieth century, American composers began to experiment with incorporating popular music into their classical compositions. While George Gershwin got his start as a Broadway songwriter, by the 1920s and 1930s he had also made a reputation for himself as a classical composer. Gershwin’s contribution to American music was the addition of jazz and blues to art music, resulting in a distinctly American, modernist style. In early 1924, Gershwin was surprised to learn that American jazz bandleader Paul Whiteman had advertised a concert in the New York Tribune that would include a jazz concerto composed by Gershwin (which he had not begun writing because he did not know about it). After he contacted Whiteman, the two men agreed on a jazz concerto for piano that Gershwin, an accomplished pianist, would perform with Whiteman’s band. Working on a tight deadline, Gershwin feverishly composed the concerto in only five short weeks! The result was Rhapsody in Blue, one of the most frequently performed pieces in American musical history. The iconic opening clarinet glissando (a slide from a low pitch to a high one) has been used in countless commercials, films and radio programs since the 1920s. Gershwin originally did not include the glissando in the piece, but he heard Whiteman’s clarinetist Ross Gorman play one during a rehearsal and decided to add it. The glissando has since become one of the most recognizable sounds in the world. The word “rhapsody” in the title means that the piece was freeform (a musical exploration of a variety of contrasting moods), and the solo piano part gives the false impression of spontaneous improvisation. “Blue” refers to the elements of blues and jazz that Gershwin incorporated. The result is an exciting, fast-paced and “American” sounding piece.

MAESTRO BIOGRAPHY PASQUALE VALERIO Pasquale Valerio is the creator, nurturer, mentor, and guiding light for The Villages® Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorale. Pasquale was born in Naples, Italy and began his music studies at the age of 9. He began studying Trumpet Performance at The N. Puccinni Conservatory of Music graduating in 1985. His studies were not limited to trumpet, but included Applied Complementary Piano Studies, Harmony, and Lectures from Maestro Filippo Veniero, who was his guide and mentor from 1967 to 1989. His adult musical career began during his national service as a member of the Carabinieri (Italian Military Police). Fortunately for his musical development, most of this was with the Band. After his discharge, he began studying conducting. Pasquale Valerio served as an apprentice under Sir Antonio Pappano for 6 years. Pasquale followed him all around the world from 2006-2011 and learned directly from the Conductor of the Royal Opera House in London. To that end, Pasquale believes fully in the magic of education through music, and that children are never too young to start discovering to power of harmony. In 1996, Pasquale relocated to the United States continuing his conducting studies with J. Whitney and Günter Schmidt. In 2004, he became the Founder and Music Director of The Villages Philharmonic Orchestra where he continues to serve today. Maestro Valerio was also the founder of Lake Sumter Chamber Orchestra as well as co-founder and conductor of The Florida Lakes Symphony from 20052006. Pasquale has been regularly invited as a guest conductor at the Orchestra Filarmonica 900', Teatro Regio, and the Viotti International Music Festival.

GUEST ARTISTS RICHARD AMOROSO, VIOLINIST Violinist Richard Amoroso joined The Philadelphia Orchestra in 1998. Born in 1970 to a musical family, he is well-known for his involvement in the Philadelphia musical community and for his extensive work with young people. A former pupil of past Philadelphia Orchestra concertmasters, Norman Carol and William de Pasquale, Mr. Amoroso continues in the long and rich tradition of these artists. Most important engagements include a recital at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall and a solo appearance with the Philly Pops Orchestra. In addition, Mr. Amoroso speaks from the stage to both subscription and young audiences of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He is also a frequent participant in the orchestra’s chamber music series and Family Concerts. Most recently, Mr. Amoroso performed as soloist with the Helena Symphony in Montana performing Shostakovich's Violin Concerto. Mr. Amoroso's relationship with The Philadelphia Orchestra began at the age of 13 when, as winner of the orchestra’s student concerto competition, he performed as soloist with the orchestra on the stage of the famed Academy of Music. He continued his studies at the Settlement School of Music and later earned his bachelor's degree from Dickinson College, graduating Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. Mr. Amoroso also has had an extensive teaching studio for the last 18 years. Some of his students have gone onto receiving scholarships at major universities and conservatories. Others are now playing professionally in orchestras around the country. Mr. Amoroso's students range in age and ability from young beginners to older professionals. His instrument is a Nicolai Gagliano from 1765. He resides in Ocean City, NJ. He is an avid golfer and sports fan.

GUEST ARTISTS SERGEI KOSSENKO, PIANIST Pianist and composer Sergei Kossenko hails from Moscow, Russia, where he began his professional musical training at age eight. Sergei earned a dual degree in Piano and Composition from Central Music School in Moscow and a Composer's "Red Diploma" with Honors from Moscow Conservatory of Music. While living in Moscow, Sergei composed incidental music for a Russian national radio network show, and worked as an arranger for various Moscow orchestras. Sergei also toured extensively in Russia and Eastern Europe performing classical works, as well as his own compositions. In 1993, Sergei was awarded a scholarship to Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH and moved to the United States. Upon graduating from Dartmouth with a Master's Degree in Electro-Acoustic Music, Sergei utilized his audio and music technology skills in his work for Kennedy Space Center Digital Media Lab and later for EA Sports as Lead Sound Designer on Madden NFL and other video game titles. Since 2005, Sergei has concentrated on performing, composing, producing, and teaching in Central Florida. Sergei has performed with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, the Jacksonville Symphony, The Villages® Philharmonic, at Walt Disney World stages and for special events, in concerts and recordings as a solo classical pianist and with numerous classical soloists, as well as in many local live music venues as a jazz/pop musician. MARCELLA RICHARDSON, VOCALIST Marcella Richardson started her singing career in northern Michigan, Torch Lake area, at a family restaurant called Brownwood. She went on to travel with a 10-piece show band that started from Brownwood called TORCH. She continued to travel the country performing and eventually formed her own groups with partners based out of Atlanta, GA. She has also done radio, TV jingles, and commercials. Eventually moving her business to The Villages, FL in 2010 she started singing in The Pops and Holiday Concerts with The Villages Philharmonic Orchestra. Along with performing with The Villages Philharmonic Orchestra, she studies and competes in ballroom dancing.

GUEST ARTISTS DEVIN EATMON, VOCALIST Devin M. Eatmon is a full lyric operatic tenor from Ocala, FL. His performance history includes working with the Central Florida Lyric Opera, Chelsea Opera, Opera in the Ozarks, Aspen Music Festival, most recently Opera Colorado, and soon to be Opera Orlando. With both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Voice Performance from Florida State University; Devin studied under the tutelage of former San Francisco Opera staring baritone, David Okerlund. Some of Devin’s most notable collegiate roles include, George Villiers in the Scholastic Premier of Carlisle Floyd’s, Prince of Players, Rodolfo in Giacomo Puccini's La bohème, Curley in Floyd's Of Mice and Men, and Edgar Aubrey in Heinrich Marschner’s German Romantic opera Der Vampyr. Mr. Eatmon accepted a contract offer to be a member of the Apprentice Singer Program at The Santa Fe Opera in the summer of 2020 however, it was postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. While at Opera Colorado, he was to cover the role of Don José in their production of Georges Bizet’s Carmen, however, the season was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Currently, Mr. Eatmon is a member of the new operatic/pop fusion trio, The Serenad3, with America’s Got Talent finalist, Fernando Varela as well as internationally acclaimed OperaNews baritone, Craig Irvin. The group has already received critical acclaim having collaborated with some legendary artists, such as David Foster, Gloria Estefan, American Idol’s, Pia Toscano, and the A Capella sensation, Voctave. Devin is currently living in Orlando, Florida and is looking forward to future endeavors with The Serenad3 as well as Opera Orlando.
