Welcome to The Sharon® L. Morse Performing Arts Center! We are so grateful to re-open our doors after such a trying season. We invite you back to view the national and international performing art tours we host here for your entertainment. Much like the building’s namesake, my grandmother, Sharon L. Morse, we love all varieties of the performing arts here. It is in her memory that I, along with my amazing team of artists and arts administrators, strive to bring many different types of the highest quality entertainment here to The Sharon. Since opening in 2015, we hope we have established a relationship of trust; that any show at The Sharon will be a show worth seeing. Perhaps you find yourself here today to see a concert of one of your favorite musicians, or to take in the national tour of a Broadway show. Either way, we encourage you to consider trying out a new show that perhaps you haven’t heard of before, knowing that it has been intentionally curated by our team. We welcome you to The Sharon: a place for you to see an old favorite, but also a place to discover your new favorite. A NOTE FROM THE MAESTRO & ARTIST Dear VPO Friend, The concert on Monday 4 April has a particular meaning. I was present at the very first performance of the then “The Villages Philharmonic Community Orchestra” in 2004 and since then I have developed a strong bond with The Villages and Maestro Pasquale Valerio. I made friends there and every time I came, I felt like I was at home. I have also seen the Orchestra grow and become more and more professional: now it is a musical body capable of performing almost everything at a very high level. This is why, returning after four years, I proposed to Maestro Valerio to perform a “new” piece, the Concerto in D op.15 by Johann Joseph Rosler. This great piece has probably never been performed in its entirety: only the first movement was (truly) played, thanks to an erroneous attribution to Beethoven. The Concerto still has its strength and is really in a style halfway between Mozart and Beethoven. I am extremely happy and proud to play this first at The Villages with my dear friend Pasquale and to be able to promote the orchestra and the city in Europe. Music is a necessity for all of us who interpret this immortal musical literature. Having a special audience that gives great support to our art is essential for every musician. I sincerely thank each of you who share our wonderful dream of making music with us and allow us to create emotions that we can all carry in our hearts every day of our lives. PROGRAM NOTE Ján Josef Rösler, COMPOSER The music of composer, kapellmeister, and piano virtuoso Johann Joseph Rösler Schemnitz, 22nd August 1771, Prague, 28th January 1812. Rösler was almost forgotten in the 20th century. Ján Josef Rösler received his initial musical education from his father, which he then developed as a self-taught musician throughout his years at grammar school, and later during his philosophical studies in Prague. In 1795 he gained a position as kapellmeister at the Guardasoni Opera Company in Prague. He worked there until 1805, when he became the kapellmeister of the opera orchestra for the court theatre (Hoftheater) in Vienna. It was here that he gained the admiration of one of Vienna‘s most influential musical patrons, Prince Franz Maximilian Lobkowitz, who engaged Rösler as one of his kapellmeisters. In 1810, Rösler fell ill (probably tuberculosis) and died on 28th January 1812. Many contemporary sources7 claim that his death was received with great sadness, and that, with the passing of this talented musician, they had also lost a kind person. Gerber8 states that a Requiem by Rosetti was played at his funeral in the presence of many composers and musicians. Using Rösler‘s own written thematical catalogue (Repertorio di tutte le mie Composizioni incominciando dall‘ Anno 1796) and adding any extant music written after the creation of this catalogue, it can be seen that he composed 9 operas based on Italian and German librettos (some later translated into Czech), 2 pantomimes, a melodrama, and more than 30 musical additions to other composers‘ works. He is also the author of at least 80 other vocal works (including 2 masses, 6 cantatas, 2 motets, arias, duets, trios, quartets, and songs on Italian and German texts), along with sinfonias, concertos, chamber music, and piano or harpsichord compositions. Concerto in D Major For Pianoforte and Orchestra According to Rösler's catalogue, the Piano Concerto in D Major was composed in 1802. The autograph of this concerto has not been found, but copies of the first movement were discovered by Guido Adler at the end of the 19th century. In his article 'Ein Satz eines unbekannten Klavierkonzertes von Beethoven' from 1888, Adler describes this discovery in detail: the orchestral voices were in the possession of Prague musicologist Emil Bezecný and the piano part with his halfbrother Josef von Bezecný, a Privy Council (Gemeinrat) in Vienna. According to the testimony of Josef von Bezecny, his father Joseph Bezecný, the director of the Hradčany Institute for the Blind, produced copies of all the parts.

PROGRAM NOTE The title on the cover of the orchestral parts 'Concert D dur für Pianoforte | mit Orchestra | von L. v. Beethoven', along with the title on the cover of the piano part ‘Beethoven | Concert in D dur/ J. B.’, a formal analysis and the Prague origin of the manuscripts led Adler to the conclusion that the composition was an early Beethoven concerto. Therefore the movement was included in the complete edition of Beethoven‘s work by Breitkopf & Härtel. The authorship of the Piano Concerto in D Major was corrected by Max Engel in the article 'Der Angeblich Beethovensche Klavierkonzertsatz' (Supposed Concerto movement by Beethoven) in 1925. In the archive of the Publisher Joh. André, Offenbach a./M., Engel discovered fifteen instrument parts titled Concerto pour le Piano Forte, accompanied by 2 Violons, Alto, Basse, Flûte, 2 Hauptbois, 2 Cors, 2 Bassons, Trompettes et Timbales composite par J Roessler ouvre 15, A Offenbach s / M chez J. André. A copy of these parts, found in the Archive of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien, became the source for this edition.

PROGRAM NOTE Franz Schubert, COMPOSER Franz Schubert completed his Symphony No.1 on October 28, 1813, when he was sixteen years old. He was nearing the end of his education at the Vienna Stadtkonvikt and preparing to become a schoolteachers like his father. During his five years at the seminary, he had trained with Antonio Salieri; Schubert would continue composition lessons with him privately even after he embarked on his new career. The first movement begins with a solemn Adagio, full of established, attentiongrabbing techniques: bold statements in octaves, decisive arpeggios, and unexpected harmonic shifts. This leads to the nimble Allegro vivace, with a scampering theme that soon runs into chords that echo the dramatic harmonies of the introduction. After a transition from the woodwinds, the strings introduce a carefree melody. This second theme forms the basis of the development section, its arching melody veering though tragic woodwind solos and duets. The strings carry the work of development for a while, but the woodwinds ultimately steer the movement back to a surprising return of the introduction, this time set at the faster tempo. After a recapitulation of the earlier themes, Schubert ends the movement as emphatically as it began. The Andante rolls out a sunny melody in the first violins, nudged forward by the other strings gently embellished by the woodwinds. The mood suddenly turns plaintive, with halting phrases. The opening melody returns, but it has been affected by the tragedy, dipping into minor. The Menuetto follows a Haydnesque design, complete with moments of cleverness: It begins with a boisterous Allegro that becomes fixated on an eighthnote turning gesture. The contrasting Trio passage evokes the Ländler, a traditional Austrian folk dance, before returning to a literal repeat of the minuet section. The Allegro vivace finale begins with just the two violin sections: the firsts toss off the melody as the seconds establish the eighth notes that run nearly nonstop throughout the movement. Even as the rest of the orchestra joins the fray and the texture grows more complex, indefatigable energy drives the finale to its conclusion.

BIOGRAPHIES PASQUALE VALERIO Pasquale Valerio is the creator, nurturer, mentor, and guiding light for The Villages® Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorale. Pasquale was born in Naples, Italy and began his music studies at the age of 9. He began studying Trumpet Performance at The N. Puccinni Conservatory of Music graduating in 1985. His studies were not limited to trumpet, but included Applied Complementary Piano Studies, Harmony, and Lectures from Maestro Filippo Veniero, who was his guide and mentor from 1967 to 1989. His adult musical career began during his national service as a member of the Carabinieri (Italian Military Police). Fortunately for his musical development, most of this was with the Band. After his discharge, he began studying conducting. Pasquale Valerio served as an apprentice under Sir Antonio Pappano for 6 years. Pasquale followed him all around the world from 2006-2011 and learned directly from the Conductor of the Royal Opera House in London. To that end, Pasquale believes fully in the magic of education through music, and that children are never too young to start discovering to power of harmony. In 1996, Pasquale relocated to the United States continuing his conducting studies with J. Whitney and Günter Schmidt. In 2004, he became the Founder and Music Director of The Villages Philharmonic Orchestra where he continues to serve today. Maestro Valerio was also the founder of Lake Sumter Chamber Orchestra as well as co-founder and conductor of The Florida Lakes Symphony from 20052006. Pasquale has been regularly invited as a guest conductor at the Orchestra Filarmonica 900', Teatro Regio, and the Viotti International Music Festival.

BIOGRAPHIES GIUSEPPE BRUNO Giuseppe Bruno graduated with honors in Piano, Composition and Conducting with Professors Specchi, Zangelmi and Taverna. Maestro Bruno also studied piano with Paolo Bordoni, conducting with Leopold Hager and attended a seminar in composition at the IRCAM in Paris. Performing for several years as a pianist in many different chamber ensembles and as a brilliant soloist, Bruno has played with many important orchestras in Italy, USA, Greece, Bosnia, Romania, Ukraine, Poland and Germany, in a repertory that extends from Mozart to contemporary music. He has collaborated with conductors including Alkis Baltas, Spiros Argiris, Roberto Abbado, Pasquale Valerio, Sam McClure, violinist Sashko Gawriloff, singers Gail Gilmore, Victor von Halem, Monica Benvenuti, and with the Octet of the Berlin Philharmonic. From 1987 to 1992 Bruno participated in the “Festival of Two Worlds” in Spoleto, Italy, and Charleston, South Carolina. Maestro Bruno was a prize winner at the International Piano Contest in Rome in 1991 and also in 1992 at the “Viotti” competition in Vercelli, Italy, in a duo with violinist Alberto Bologni. He has recorded for Nuova Fonit Cetra, Diapason, SAM, Bongiovanni, Ars publica, Sheva, Ars musici, as well as for RAI, Swiss French and Italian radio, Vatican radio and for WDR in Cologne. In the past few years Maestro Bruno has been acknowledged as a highly regarded conductor in Italy and abroad. Maestro Bruno is currently a Professor of the “Giacomo Puccini” Conservatory in La Spezia, Italy and Visiting Professor at Rubinstein Akademie, Düsseldorf.
