It’s so lovely to have you back in our beautiful space after a long and difficult break. These last few months have been challenging for all of us. That challenge was no exception for us here at The Sharon. The time we spent with our doors closed felt like an endless cycle. We would plan, rearrange, hope, move dates, cancel shows, create virtual content, move venues, and redesign sets. Then after all of that we would repeat all of the aforementioned steps again and again. We did all of that with the goal of bringing us all back together again in mind. Now, finally, here we are together. I know things are different, and they likely will be for a while. But we will persevere. We will work together to find new ways of creating, new ways to move you, and new ways to exist together in a theater. This innovation will require all of us to do our part. So please, while you are here in our theater, I kindly request that you maintain your physical distance of six feet, wear your favorite mask and sanitize your hands often. The performing arts are the most collaborative art form in the world, but the most important collaborator is you, the patron. You come in at the end of our process and provide us with applause, tears, gasps, and laughter. Now we are also asking that you take care of us, the artists, and each other by following the guidelines above. If we all commit to this together we can continue to enjoy live arts in this new way. PROGRAM NOTE Although composed in Vienna, Eine kleine Nachtmusik (1787) recalls the several serenades Mozart wrote while in Salzburg. Having lost one of its five original movements, it now follows the patterns of a standard symphony, proceeding from a sonata form, to a slow lyrical movement, to a minuet, to a joyful rondo finale. The reduced scale of the chamber ensemble would have worked just as well in the era of economy under Colloredo. However, the archbishop would have thoroughly disapproved of the frivolity of the piece, meant to evoke an impromptu concert under a beloved’s window. If not quite seductive, the serenade is meant to be emotionally persuasive, and it has certainly succeeded. The piece turns on a series of memorable tunes that have come to define our appreciation of Mozart. Still, compared to the masterpieces that preceded it, like Don Giovanni and the "Prague" Symphony, Eine kleine Nachtmusik seems trivial. Was Mozart homesick for Salzburg, the city he once couldn’t wait to leave? Following his father’s death in the spring of 1787 and his mother’s that July, Mozart wrote very little music, but this piece from August seems lovingly crafted. We might even hear a note of pathos in the second movement romance. While Mozart had fallen out of touch with his sister, Nannerl, he does seem to have reached back to Salzburg through music.
ABOUT HANDEL'S MESSIAH THE GLORIOUS HISTORY OF HANDEL’S MESSIAH A musical tradition for the holiday season! INTRODUCTION Handel was a German, later British, Baroque composer who spent the bulk of his career in London, becoming well known for his operas, oratorios, anthems, concerti grossi, and organ concertos. He has been called the first classical music superstar. His operas, oratorios, and instrumental music were the toast of London for more than 30 years; and over the past two and a half centuries, interest in Handel has never waned – not for audiences or for musicians. Handel was a poet of the human heart, through music. He wrote wonderful, memorable melodies – He also wrote incredibly grand music. Through his operas and oratorios, he had a great insight into human emotions of all kinds, from deepest despair to the highest joy. From favorites like Water Music, to lesserknowns like the oratorio La Resurrezione, his achievements have earned him artistic immortality. HANDEL’S MESSIAH Handel’s Messiah was originally an Easter offering. It burst onto the stage of Musick Hall in Dublin on April 13, 1742. The audience swelled to a record 700, as ladies had heeded pleas by management to wear dresses "without Hoops" in order to make "Room for more company." Handel’s superstar status was not the only draw; many also came to glimpse the contralto, Susannah Cibber, then embroiled in a scandalous divorce. GUEST ARTISTS DANIEL BATES Grammy Award-nominated tenor Daniel Bates enjoys a wide-ranging performance schedule in concert and opera. His operatic appearances include debuts with Anchorage Opera as Ernesto in Don Pasquale and with the Imperial Symphony as Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, as well as a return to Anchorage Opera as the title role in Candide. His concert appearances include a return to The Arts at Grace to perform a solo recital and his Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra debut in their season opening gala. An alumnus of young artist residencies across the United States, Mr. Bates was a 2014–2016 Young Artist with Florida Grand Opera, where his repertoire included a critically acclaimed Ernesto in Don Pasquale, Ferrando in Così fan tutte, Nadir in Les pêcheurs de perles, Goro in Madama Butterfly, the Third SS Man in Mieczyslaw Weinberg's The Passenger, and the Magician (cover) in The Consul. As an Apprentice Artist with the Santa Fe Opera in 2015 and 2016, Mr. Bates performed the role of the Slave in Salome and both Junior and Charlie in the world premiere in Jennifer Higdon's Cold Mountain, a live recording of which was released by Pentatone and which has recently been nominated for a Grammy. Recognized as a young artist of significant talent, Mr. Bates is a Grant Winner in the 2016 Giulio Gari International Vocal Competition and First Place winner in the 2016 National Society of Arts Letters Voice Competition (Florida East Coast Chapter). In 2015 he received a Career Development Grant from the Sullivan Foundation. Additional competition credits include District Winner and Regional Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, First Place winner of the East Bay Opera League Competition, and prizewinner of the Henry and Maria Holt Competition. JULIE BATMAN Julie Batman, soprano, sings professionally with the Orlando Light Opera, Opera Orlando, Opera Tampa/ Tampa Singers, The Dicken’s Carolers, and Mary Queen of the Universe. She is a graduate of and staff professor of voice and piano at Rollins College. She has been a choral director and choral accompanist at Rollins College and she also teaches voice and piano at Lake Highland Preparatory School. Julie has been featured as a vocal soloist for several local arts organizations in Orlando. Her credits include being a featured soloist for The Villages® Philharmonic Orchestra; the contemporary 8

GUEST ARTISTS ballet, Carolina, Handel’s The Messiah - with the Messiah Choral Society, The Villages Philharmonic , the Central Florida Community Arts, and the Basilica Mary Queen of the Universe Shrine. She has sung as soloist for Mozart’s Requiem, Schubert Magnificat, Vivaldi’s Nulla in Mundo Pax/Alleluia, Mozart’s Laudate Dominum and several other solos with Bach Festival choir, "Et incarnatus Est" from Mozart’s Grand Mass in C with CFCA and has been a featured soloist on several CDs: Osterkantate Ernest Wolf Easter Cantata - Moravian Society, All is Bright - Bach Festival Choir, Ave Maria and The Basilica Choir - Stemik Music. Carolina Contemporary Ballet CD and DVD. In addition to singing and teaching, Julie enjoys accompanying choral groups and playing solo piano for events. EMILY HEUMANN Mezzo-soprano Emily Heumann is gaining recognition for her "credible" storytelling (Orlando Sentinel), and "delicious vocals" (Arts + Culture Texas Magazine). In the 19/20 season, she appeared on tour with The Chapelwood Choir, as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro with Opera Orlando, in Rigoletto with St. Petersburg Opera, and as The Fox in The Little Prince with First Coast Opera. In the 18/19 season, Emily was a Studio Artist with Opera Orlando, where she appeared as Mrs. Noye in Noye's Fludde, Nicklausse in the outreach tour of Les contes d'Hoffmann, and covered Hansel in Hansel and Gretel. Last season, Emily also made her debut as Cherubino with First Coast Opera. She has performed with dozens of companies including St. Petersburg Opera Company, First Coast Opera, Opera Orlando, Rec Room Arts, The Savannah Voice Festival, Operativo Houston, Florida Opera Theatre, and The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. Emily is also recognized for her crossover work in musical theatre and straight theatre. Most notably, she was seen as Natalie Goodman in Next to Normal at Mad Cow Theatre Company, where critics praised her "believable" performance filled with "emotional complexity" and "pipes to do Kitt’s score justice, even without microphones" (Orlando Weekly). She has also been seen as Éponine in Les Misérables, Irene Molloy in Hello, Dolly!, Moll in The Cradle Will Rock, Emily Webb in Our Town, Susie in Wit, Peggy in Godspell, and Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, for which she was named "Best Leading Actress in a Musical" at the Murray Awards. Emily holds a Master's Degree in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from The University of Houston, where she performed Beppe in L'amico Fritz, Lisa in I due timidi, Princess Linetta in The Love for Three Oranges, and Bobachino in 352-751-7799

While in Houston, Emily also appeared as Hansel in a criticallyacclaimed production of Hansel and Gretel with Rec Room Arts, as the Alto Soloist in Chapelwood United Methodist's presentations of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater and The Messiah, and as Eloisa in Rossini's Soirées Musicales with Operativo Houston. During this time, Emily also appeared in concert engagements across Houston, Tampa, Savannah, and New York, most notably at the National Opera Center. Emily enjoys performing new music, especially works by her husband, composer Eric Heumann. She has performed in dozens of new music programs across the county. www.emilyheumann.com STEPHEN MUMBERT Stephen Mumbert, bass, is quickly gaining attention on the concert and opera stage throughout the United States and England. Stephen was recently praised for being “vocally, the most promising singer” and for “possessing an assured and stylish technique” for his interpretation of the title role in Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Aldeburgh Festival in England. Stephen is a graduate of Stetson University where he holds a B.M. in voice performance, and he also holds an M.M. in opera from The Boston Conservatory. Recent performances have included Rodrigo in Bellini’s I Puritani with Minnesota Concert Opera, Mozart’s Requiem with the Dakota Valley Symphony (which was broadcast on Twin Cities Public Television), Handel’s Messiah with the Oratorio Society of Minneapolis and The Village® Philharmonic, Wilfred Shadbolt in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Yeomen of the Guard with the G&S Very Light Opera Company, Il Commendatore in Don Giovanni with First Coast Opera, and a new opera project performing the lead roles of Guildenstern in Herschel Garfein’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and Hopkins in Robert Aldridge's Sister Carrie staged with the respective Grammy award winning composers in residence. Stephen is excited and grateful to be returning to sing Handel’s Messiah with The Villages Philharmonic again this year.
