Echoes of the Past, Visions of the Future SEASON 10

ONLY SOME OF GOD’S CHILDREN OR MISSISSIPPI MAGNOLIAS

Will roots grow on Promised Land?

Best friends, John Curtis and William “Cochise” Brown, return home to Plantersville, Mississippi after taking part in the 1963 March on Washington. Inspired by the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders, the two men contemplate if they want to spend the rest of their lives in the south. Betty, John’s wife, is anxious to leave Mississippi after their son Ezekiel is attacked at a sit-in protest. Meanwhile Cochise’s wife, Hattie Mae, a local juke joint singer, is excited at the prospects of singing in northern nightclubs. She willingly leaves the decision to Cochise, but Cochise only looks to John. The hope of owning the Promised Land, worked on by generations of John’s family, further complicates the decision of whether to leave Mississippi. Where will these two close families choose to grow their roots: in new northern lands, or the fertile southern soil they know so well? Only Some of God's Children or Mississippi Magnolias is a beautiful, yet terribly honest story of five different flowers just waiting to bloom.

NIGHTSWEAT

Pre-Elderly Girls Gone Wild

Britney Cox, a washed-up actress has been canceled on social media! To hide from the haters her anxious young assistant, Maude Bender, has booked a girl’s murder mystery weekend at a Berkshires Airbnb. Joining the fun is Tawny Fitzsimmons, a tired mom, and ex-cop and security detail Dale James. Comic mania ensues when the girl’s weekend goes awry. Between pipe bombs, appliances that don’t work, slashed tires, a mysterious landlady, and news of a serial killer hunting “pre-elderly women,” what more could go wrong? “Bridesmaids” meets “Friday the 13th” in Natalie Symons’ hilarious new farce, Nightsweat, as it pokes fun at wokeness, Florida, pronouns, Ozempic, white privilege, “don’t say gay,” horror movie tropes, fake news, and, of course, Hall & Oats. Book your stay at McCurdy’s Haunted Airbnb where murder, mayhem, and belly laughs are behind every door.

PRESENTING SEASON 11

Stronger Together

After an incredible celebration of ten years at The Studio Theatre, it feels appropriate to start another decade with a new name, The SigPro Studio, and a powerful theme for Season 11. In a world in which divisiveness seems to be par for the course, this theme emphasizes unity, collaboration, and a communal effort to tackle challenges that may seem insurmountable alone. I believe it is a theme near and dear to the hearts of everyone at Significant Productions.

Our Season 11 Theme: Stronger Together

Bishop Desmond Tutu states, “I am a human because you are a human. My humanity is caught up in yours.” Through different circumstances and lenses, each production this season exemplifies a belief in our shared humanity and proves that we are stronger together.

Chicken and Biscuits by Douglas Lyons is a story of love, grief, and forgiveness. As a family comes together, they realize just how much they need each other no matter how differently they view the world.

Fat Man’s, a new play by Matt Webster, confronts ideological differences and challenges us all to never judge a book by its cover. Instead, it invites us to discover what we have in common through our humanity. I promise you, love is there.

Come From Away by Irene Sankoff and David Hein shows how kindness in the face of unprecedented circumstances proves that even strangers are better together.

Primary Trust by Eboni Booth is a primary example of how human connection, community, and support are essential for navigating what life brings.

So now, I am officially making a call to action to join us on a great ride through a wonderful season. I charge all of us to believe in the human spirit and remember: “What binds us together will always be more powerful than what drives us apart.” - Barack Obama

I am a true believer that we are Stronger Together.

Artistic

Thank you to Whitney Morse and Jason Goedken for the magnificent opportunity to guide us into a new decade. It is a sincere honor to be a part of such an amazing company. I hope to continue the incredible work you began for The SigPro Studio and Significant Productions.

CHICKEN & BISCUITS

Grab a plate, feed the soul

In this hilarious celebration of Black joy, grief and healing, an extended family is brought back to St. Luke’s Church. With a heavy family secret on the verge of being revealed, two sisters are reunited at the celebration of life for their family patriarch whose dry chicken and biscuits were only famous to him. Family stressors abound, Beverly shows up to the chapel with her “blessings” on display, Baneatta’s son brings his Jewish boyfriend along, and Beverly’s nosy daughter keeps asking questions no one wants to answer. While Baneatta’s husband, Reginald, tries to keep the peace, the two sisters are faced with a truth that could either heal or break them. Chicken and Biscuits invites you to grab a fan, have a seat in the pew, and get ready to say “amen.”

FAT MAN'S

The art of connection

Winnie, the new local minister of a small Presbyterian church in West Virginia is eager to invigorate and inspire change in her community, while Fat Man is happy with things just the way they are—sipping on sour beer. When Winnie suddenly finds herself as his landlord, a dysfunctional business relationship evolves into an honest and unexpected connection between two stubborn people. Shared values and showing up for each other leads to an unlikely friendship, reigniting their faith in the world. “Fat Man’s is a play about love, tattoos, and discovering the Godliness that lives inside all of us.”
