&�e 'Z);,£CU7,, Dear IHSA riders, coaches, parents, sponsors, supporters and friends, Congratulations and welcome to the 2022 IHSA National Championship Horse Show at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center! In "normal" years, it takes talent and success for riders to qualify to compete at Nationals. These past two years have tested our resolve and resilience. I am proud of how the entire organization faced the challenges of COVID-19. We are back and we are strong. IHSA coaches and riders have remained steadfast in their commitment to their programs and their horses. Some teams had short breaks and others had longer intervals without the opportunity to compete. That commitment has brought us to this National Championship and you should be proud of your accomplishments. Over these past two years, the board of directors answered my call and worked tirelessly to guide the organization and reignite the IHSA. We have, however, lost beloved members of the organization. Please see our /4 �/Wta page in this program as we honor people who have made an enormous impact on the IHSA and collegiate riding. We live by our mission to provide access to equestrian competition for all college and university students regardless of riding level, gender, race, sexual orientation or financial status. As we are dedicated to promoting sportsmanship, horsemanship and academic excellence, we are proud to support the creation of the IHSA Diversity Equity and Inclusion committee. History of the INTERCOLLEGIATE HORSE SHOWS ASSOCIATION The Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association was established in 1967 by Robert “Bob” Cacchione while he was an 18-year-old sophomore attending Farleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey. Cacchione developed the prototype competition program with the help of his professor and renowned horseman, Jack Fritz. Some of the most notable riders in show jumping and the Western disciplines competed in the IHSA during their college years. Olympic gold medalist Beezie Madden competed for Southern Seminary and won the Cacchione Cup in 1984. Olympic gold medalist Peter Wylde won the Cacchione Cup in 1986 while he attended Tufts University.

Launched with just two colleges competing in hunter seat equitation, the IHSA was praised for its competition format and quickly caught on. In 1979 the Western divisions premiered at the IHSA National Championship Horse Show (Nationals). In 1999 IHSA Inc. was established as a nonprofit organization. The early shows were judged by great horsemen, like Frank Chapot, George Morris and Michael Page. Originally, Nationals were held at various college facilities but are now held at major equestrian competition venues.

About the INTERCOLLEGIATE HORSE SHOWS ASSOCIATION The Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) welcomes men and women of all riding levels and offers individual and team competition in hunter seat equitation, Western horsemanship and reining at more than 400 member colleges and universities. Founded in 1967, it is the oldest and largest intercollegiate equestrian organization with 10,000 members in 47 states and Canada. IHSA college and university team participation is represented through a variety of programs including varsity athletics, academic departments and club sports. Membership in IHSA means that college students can compete at horse shows regardless of their experience or financial status. Students compete in beginner through advanced divisions with suitable, provided horses, eliminating the expense of horse ownership and much of the related costs of the sport. Through the Intercollegiate Equestrian Foundation (IEF), IHSA members are eligible for multiple need and merit-based scholarships.

Members compete to qualify for IHSA Regional Finals. The top riders and teams at Regionals advance to the IHSA Zone Finals (hunter seat) or Semi-Finals (Western). The top competitors and teams at Zone Finals and Semi-Finals qualify for the annual IHSA National Championship Horse Show. Open level riders are eligible to compete for the USEF/Cacchione Cup and the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Western Rider titles. National Championships qualified teams compete for the Collegiate Cup (hunter seat) and AQHA Trophy (Western) honors. IHSA offers valuable hands-on experience and professional development in multiple facets of the equine industry. Many IHSA teams participate in service projects, giving back to their communities. Through the IHSA, students enhance their college experience and develop the tools that help to build successful careers.

IHSA Senior Athletic Academic Achievement Award Essay Winner 2022 LYRA SEABORN, Davidson College
SHOWING UP FOR MYSELF One of the first lessons I learned when I started to ride was the importance of relaxation. ‘’Take a deep breath,” my trainer would repeat, reminding me that horses can sense our fear and trepidation. But staying calm was easier said than done. The majority of my adolescent competitions ended in disaster - despite my incessant mental notes to stay loose and keep my position neat and fluid, my body would betray me at the last instant, locking up into stiff, disobedient configurations that sent me careening behind the motion and into the sand. I cried as my mount galloped away and convinced myself that I was a failure. This drive for perfectionism only intensified as the barn waned, replaced by ever more complex social landscapes, mental health struggles, and rigorous curricula. But the horse girl who used to canter over sticks at recess never fully died, and when I learned my new college had an equestrian team, I jumped at the chance to join. But just as I was finding my stride in the intercollegiate riding world, the COVID pandemic shut down the competition season. Sometimes I still think of what could have happened if I hadn’t lost that year- would I have finally placed out of my division? Would I have gotten to say a proper goodbye to my then-senior teammates before we parted ways forever? But going down the “what-if’ hole is like trying to kick without letting up on the reins - I’ve learned I can’t go forward if I’m always pulling myself back. My time in IHSA has taught me how to accept disappointment and grow the resilience necessary to move on and continue to strive for improvement. More and more frequently, I’ve found myself channeling this adaptive attitude in my life beyond the barn and arena. When I sat down to talce the MCAT in January, I told myself what I always think before I enter the show ring: no expectations, just try your best. The same mantra is now seeing me through the completion of my senior thesis, the gap-year job search, and preparation for med school applications. Most importantly, I’ve learned to have fun. As team meals, group boot-polishing sessions, and deep ringside conversations replaced the stress of show days, I realized that after I graduate I’ll be thinking back on a whole lot more than where I landed in the ribbons. The same goes for my time in undergrad (substituting rosettes for GPA and accolades), and I expect it will keep holding true as I enter med school and beyond. As nice as winning first place or qualifying for Regionals feels, such achievements would be paltry without my friends cheering me on. My heart doesn’t drop anymore when I hear the loudspeaker blare, “Riders, you are now being judged at the walk.” Instead, I straighten my shoulders and smile for the judges and my teammates. I might not yet be truly as confident as I appear, but the less I dwell on my insecurities, the smaller they become. And so I repeat: Deep breaths, heels down, and eyes always ahead!

MISSION STATEMENT The IHSA promotes competition for riders of all skill levels, who compete individually and as teams at regional, zone and national levels. The association was founded on the principle that any college student should have the opportunity to participate in equestrian competition regardless of financial status, gender or riding level. The IHSA emphasizes learning and sportsmanship and fosters teamwork. IHSA welcomes riders in their first years of riding and students with show experience. HUNTER SEAT TOM BRENNAN Tom Brennan is a USEF "R" judge who has judged some of the most prestigious
horse shows in the country including USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals, the
USEF Pony Hunter Finals, the USEF Pony Medal Finals, Maclay Regionals and more.
He attended Stonehill College (North Easton, Massachusetts) where he competed
on the university's IHSA Equestrian team.
TODD KARN Todd Karn earned his "R" license in 1985 and has judged at some of the best horse shows in the country, including at Middleburg, Hampton Classic and the New
England Medal Finals. From Fayetteville, New York, Karn is a longtime hunter/
jumper professional and a former coach of the Cornell University Equestrian Team.
WESTERN GRETCHEN MATHES Gretchen Mathes has been training, showing and raising champion Quarter Horses
for 50 years. Mathes has coached World and Congress champions in both Youth and
Amateur classes. She is licensed to officiate with the AQHA, NRHA, NSBA, WCHA and has judged at every major show in the country.
ALLEN MITCHELS Allen Mitchels hails from Michigan City, Indiana. He is the former president of the

(NSBA) and brings a wealth of knowledge to the judges' box. Mitchels has judged

National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) and the National Snaffle Bit Association
Quarter Horse Congress, the Dixie National Championship, and major futurities

Each team scores 10 points for a first-place finish, 8 points for second, 7 points for third, 6 points for fourth, 5 points for fifth, 4 points for sixth, 3 points for seventh, 2 points for eighth, 1 point for ninth, and ½ point for tenth. National Championship Horse Show CACCHIONE CUP/HUNTER SEAT REGIONAL HIGH POINT RIDERS The IHSA would like to recognize the achievements of all of the Cacchione Cup/Hunter Seat Regional High Point riders from across the U.S. and Canada. These riders competed all year, against solid competition within their region, to earn the title of Regional High Point Rider, thereby qualifying for the Cacchione Cup Qualifying Class at their respective Zone Finals. While some of their journeys ended at the Zone Finals, this does not minimize their accomplishments for they represent some of the best open riders within the association.
