Although many universities in the UK are taking steps to tackle sexual harassment and assault among students, do they need to do more to influence the way nightclubs and event organisers promote themselves? It emerged recently that Freshers at Cardiff University had been given ‘shagcharts’ by South Wales based events company Climax Promotions (!). This was accompanied by a ‘shagchart’ and ‘chunderchart’ on

the handout, which encouraged students to keep a tally of their sexual partners and the amount of times they were sick after drinking too much during Freshers’ Week.

On 26 October 2013, a motion ending rape culture at the University of Bristol (UoB) was passed by Student Council. However, according to an Epigram survey only four per cent of students believe that this has begun to be achieved. In fact, 62 per cent of those who responded were not even aware that the motion was ever passed. Last year’s motion included resolutions such as committing union resources to ‘debunking’ widespread myths concerning rape and consent and replacing song lyrics which ‘reinforce’ rape culture with an instrumental version. University of Bristol Union (UBU) also gained the ability to ‘disaffiliate an affiliated society’ if it is proven to commit ‘rape apology’ and refuse to express regret for this.
