LOS ANGELES - An unlikely battle emerged at the box office this weekend between “The Emoji Movie” and “Dunkirk.” As of Saturday morning the animated feature and war epic seemed to be in a dead heat. But by Sunday morning, most of the dust had settled, and it appears “Dunkirk” will once again be the weekend’s first place film. Christopher Nolan’s latest from Warner Bros. over-performed last weekend when it opened to over $50 million, showing that the director, combined with positive critical reception, still has a strong draw -- even for a movie lacking movie star power, and at risk of being written off as yet another World War II movie. This time around it looks to take in $28.1 million from 3,748 locations, for a strong hold. It’s the first time that a movie has been first place two weekends in a row since the same studio’s “Wonder Woman” in early June. Patty Jenkins’ movie has had a phenomenal run since, and is currently closing in on $400 million domestic (right now it’s at $395.4 million). That means Sony’s “Emoji Movie” is in second for the weekend with $25.7 million from 4,075 locations. The animated adven-

ture took a lot of heat from critics -- reaction ranged from meh to horrible, earning its current Rotten Tomatoes score of 8%. Its B CinemaScore is also quite low for an animated movie, meaning audiences aren’t particularly enjoying the movie either. T.J. Miller plays the central character, a “Meh” emoji who has “no filter,” meaning his expression can change. The same cannot be said for the rest of the cast, which includes James Corden, Anna Faris, Maya Rudolph, Christina Aguilera, and Sofia Vergara. Oh yeah, and Sir Patrick Stewart plays “Poop.” “We’re thrilled,” said Sony’s marketing chief Josh Greenstein. “The audience has spoken and made the ‘Emoji Movie’ a family event.” That leaves this week’s other major release, “Atomic Blonde” somewhat straggling. Thousands evacuated from Barcelona festival after stage fire MADRID - More than 22,000 people were evacuated from an electronic music festival in Barcelona on Saturday night after a huge fire broke out on one of the stages during a sequence of the show involving fireworks, emergency services said. They said no one was injured. Footage circulated on social media showed big flames leaping from the stage, creating big plumes of black smoke in front of a crowd. The festival, known as “Tomorrowland”, was taking place just north of Barcelona, in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, the first time it has been held in Spain. Indonesia detains 153 over $450-mln scam targeting Chinese

JAKARTA- Indonesian police on Monday said they had detained more than 150 Chinese nationals accused of carrying out a sophisticated scam that netted around $450 million by tricking their compatriots into paying to make legal cases go away. “This is an international syndicate of online fraud,” Jakarta police spokesman Argo Yuwono told a news conference. “The information first came from China’s police department, so this is a joint investigation.” Police said the suspects, 148 of whom were Chinese nationals and the rest Indonesian, had been detained during weekend raids in the capital Jakarta, the city of Surabaya and the islands of Batam and Bali. “The perpetrators are Chinese. The victims are Chinese. It just happens that they operate from Indonesia,” Yuwono added. The syndicate operated by first tracking down information on wealthy Chinese officials or businessmen em-

The victims were then contacted and told by the suspects that they were from the Attorney General’s office or the police and could “negotiate to stop the case” on payment of a certain sum. “The information we got from China is that they have been in operation since the start of the year, and their profit has reached 6 trillion rupiah,” Yuwono said, a figure equivalent to $450 million. The results indicated that on average damage to coral reef occurs under the pontoon used as marine tourism facilities. But the more years, the existence of gramnegative bacteria experiences a larger trend of about 46.5 percent. Among the gram-negative bacteria, the highest is Pseudomonas bacteria reaching around 16 percent. “It is less than a quarter, but high enough among all types of germs in hospital, especially in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU),” said Dyah Kanya Wati, a pediatrician at Sanglah Hospital, recently. Pseudomonas is one of the most common causes of gram-negative germs in ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP). Police have Tegenungan waterfall fenced permanently

GIANYAR — Throughout this year, the Tegenungan waterfall visited by hundreds of tourists each day has claimed two casualties. Seeing this condition, Gianyar police also asked the management to install a permanent fence. In the meantime, Sukawati police officers investigating the death of Wilfredus alias Fred, 25, under the waterfall as high as 30 meters, has scheduled the summon to management of the tourist attraction.

Researchers creating warning system for toxic algae in lakes

It’s one of the most wide-ranging freshwater monitoring systems in the U.S., researchers say, and some of its pieces soon will be watching for harmful algae on hundreds of lakes nationwide. Researchers are creating an early warning system using real-time data from satellites that in recent years have tracked algae bloom hotpots such as Florida’s Lake Okeechobee and the East Coast’s Chesapeake Bay. The plan is to have it in place within two years so that states in the continental U.S. can be alerted to where toxic algae is appearing before they might detect it on the surface, said Blake Schaeffer, a researcher with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. “You don’t have to wait until someone gets sick,” said Schaeffer, one of the leaders of the project. Across the nation, farm runoff, sewage overflows and lawn fertilizers have washed into lakes and rivers and left behind unsightly algae blooms that can sicken people and

pets and harm wildlife. But often the first reports of harmful algae on a lake come from boaters seeing something strange in the water, said Rick Stumpf, of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. He began using satellites in 2008 to monitor algae on Lake Erie. That work took on a new urgency after a bloom near Toledo’s shoreline contaminated the drinking water for more than 400,000 people three years ago. The EPA in recent years has been testing using the satellite data to watch for algae in lakes in California, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Earlier this year, the data helped detect an algae bloom in a Utah Lake near Salt Lake City before officials on the ground knew about it. “That’s exactly what we we’re trying to accomplish,” Schaeffer said. The system in development will cast a wider net at a time when many states can’t afford to monitor every lake threatened by harmful algae. The goal is to use the satellite data to watch for algae on 1,800 lakes across the nation and provide four different types of water quality measurements

on close to 170,000 lakes. What satellites can’t measure is the amount of toxins in the water. That’s where samples gathered by researchers come into play. That too can be expensive so researchers have developed an underwater lab that sits at the bottom of Lake Erie and both collects water and tests the levels of toxins before sending the results back remotely. The whole process takes four hours — much less than the day or two it takes to test samples from a boat. “We call it the ‘lab in a can,’” said Tim Davis, a Great Lakes researcher with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. The first robotic lab was launched this summer and two more are in the works. While it’s still in the early stages, Davis said it could work in other lakes plagued by algae. Other researchers are testing drones on Lake Erie to see if digital images they capture can be effective monitoring the algae blooms. Already in use on the lake are buoys that measure algae in the water. Those leading all of these research efforts say the key is provide as much information as possible. “It’s really about using a combination of all of these,” Schaeffer said. (ap)

JOHANNESBURG — A new study says hotter temperatures caused by climate change are taking their toll on the aardvark, whose diet of ants and termites is becoming scarcer because of reduced rainfall. The University of Witwatersrand in South Africa said Monday that drought in the Kalahari desert killed five out of six aardvarks that were being monitored for a year, as well as 11 others in the area. Aardvarks are found throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Professor Andrea Fuller says the body temperatures of the aardvarks

in the study plummeted during the night because they were not getting enough energy from their diminished food sources. Fuller says the aardvarks tried to conserve energy by looking for insects during the warmer daytime instead of at night, but their efforts to adapt could not save them. According to Chief of Denpasar Police Traffic Affairs Unit, Heri Supriawan, when talking about congestion, it actually refers to demand and supply. This means that vehicle growth is not balanced with road capacity. Related to this, Denpasar police become a barometer in terms of overcoming congestion. “Actually what can be done to overcome the congestion is to narrow the vehicle growth. This means that vehicle growth rate is reduced or the road is expanded. Both ways are actually the most effective,” he said. However, if both solutions cannot be implemented, the solution is traffic engineering management to look for the obstacles causing the congestion. Another effort that can be done is the presence of central parking so the traffic can run smoothly. For example, Heri added that Jalan Teuku Umar is clean from parking and no more congestion occurs there. Yet the effort always gets constrained and many parties disagree. “One of the parties to be harmed in this case is the PD Parkir because its income will decrease if all the

roads in Denpasar and Badung are sterile from the use as parking space,” said this former deputy chief of Gianyar police traffic affairs unit. For the Kuta area, the same problem faced is parking. In the world of traffic, parking is called the side constraint. Cars and motorbikes parked on the road will reduce the passable area. If forced to be freed from parking, it will result in polemic, especially from entrepreneurs. “The only way to do is diversion or changes of traffic. It is impossible to add the road section, and stopping the vehicle speed is obviously unable, while the roads remain the same. Auto dealers sell vehicles, in the long run they will cause congestion,” he said. Every year, the congestion will surely increase due to the growth of vehicles and the addition of unbalanced roads. Annual growth of vehicles reaches 10 percent, while the addition of road capacity is only 3 percent let alone be in holiday season. Another way to be done is the placement of personnel at the points or intersection prone to congestions. Since the number of personnel has not been able to cover all the congestion-prone points, there is a mapping area, carrying the location of congestion and the time of congestion so that personnel can be alerted there. Do not just put up red flag,” affirmed Deddy. This insistence is based on the death incident to visitors at this Tegenungan waterfall that is not for the first time. Four months ago, a student of SMPN 1 Kuta junior high school was also sucked into the riverbed because he was desperate to go under the splash. When entering the riverbed, the evacuation process lasted long. “Do not let it claim another victim, so I have it immediately fenced,” he said. Separately, Chief of Sukawati Police, Pande Sugiharta, stated that to ensure the incident, police scheduled a summons. “Immediately, we summon the management because there is an incident report,” he said. He explained that based on examination and initial information on the scene, the management of the waterfall has conducted its duty where it already prohibited the victim from bathing at the location. Moreover, the victim’s companions already tried to stop Fred’s intention to enter the splash of the waterfall. “From the testimony of his companions, the victim was drunk after drinking. He was desperate to ignore the prohibition and broke through,” he said. As a result, the desperate Fred entered the splashes and was directly sucked into the riverbed and found dead on Friday afternoon. Previously, it was reported that Tegenungan waterfall, Sukawati, claimed another casualty on Friday (Jul. 28). The dead visitor this time is Wilfredus alias Fred, 25. The victim from Flores, NTT (East Nusa Tenggara) was found after a long search by joint officers. As information compiled at the scene, the victim along with ten companions came to the attraction on Friday afternoon around 12:30. This group was then bathed under the waterfall having a height of about 30 meters. After playing water for a few minutes, suddenly the victim Fred approached the waterfall and immediately disappeared. Planned to be brought to legal domain TABANAN - The case on the installation of banners containing the closure of the Ulun Danu Beratan Temple for tourism on Wednesday (Jul. 26) is going to be forwarded to legal domain by the management of tourist attraction and gebok pesatakan (a group of customary hamlets). For the time being, there are two points to be reported, namely the case of banner installation and allegation on the misappropriation of temple funds. In the letter addressed to the regent of Tabanan and copies sent to governor of Bali are mentioned the issues becoming the background of the banner installation. Regarding the complaint about the dismissal of temple priest as stated in the letter was denied by Sama Arta. “The right fact is the change of the schedule for the temple priests. All this time, the schedule is set up every seven days, but now it has become six days,” he said.

The change of schedule is in accordance with the quarterly meeting held on June 9 where 18 priests already agreed to pay devotional works (ngayah) at Ulun Danu Beratan Temple. The schedule change is meant to avoid monotony namely serving the pilgrims on the same days. Another problem complained in the letter is the matter of padlocking of the Prajapati Pande Beratan Temple. According to Sama Artha, the temple has been indeed padlocked every night since the past time to keep valuable relics in the temple. But if there are pilgrims coming at night to say prayers, certainly it will not be closed and accompanied by the priest on duty that day. Another problem is about the dismantling of compound wall in the middle courtyard of Ulun Danu Beratan along 20 meters. Based on the quarterly meeting of Gebok Pesatakan attended by the management of tourist attraction, Gebog Pesatakan, headman and community leaders was decided to restore the structure of the temple to the original style. China hits back at Trump criticism over N.Korea

YANGON - Four more people have died in an outbreak of H1N1 influenza in Myanmar, a health official said on Monday, taking the death toll in the latest outbreak to 10 as the government stepped up public awareness campaigns about the swine flu virus. The latest H1N1 outbreak began more than a week ago, said Thinzar Aung, deputy director of the infectious diseases department at the Ministry of Health and Sport, with Yangon, Myanmar’s biggest city, the worst affected area. Authorities have carried out health awareness campaigns and sought to calm public fears over the outbreak, although stores have sold out of surgical masks in Yangon. Authorities have told the public not to panic and described the latest outbreak as a regular seasonal occurrence. “We have never withheld any information about the infection of the disease,” heath minister Myint Htwe was quoted as saying by state-run newspaper Global New Light of Myanmar on Monday. “We are releasing real information on the seasonal influenza H1N1 in real time,” he said. H1N1 has been among the strains of flu circulating in Myanmar seasonally since a global pandemic in 2009, although deaths from the virus had not been reported in recent years, heath officials have said. Aside from those killed by the virus, 51 people have been confirmed to have contracted the disease, according to the health ministry. It has called on hospitals and clinics to report patients showing signs of influenza-like illness. Separately, Myanmar’s livestock ministry has also reported an outbreak of H5N1 bird flu in the south. BEIJING - China hit back on Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted he was “very disappointed” in China following Pyongyang’s latest missile test, saying the problem did not arise in China and that all sides need to work for a solution. China has become increasingly frustrated with American and Japanese criticism that it should do more to rein in Pyongyang. China is North Korea’s closest ally, but Beijing is angry with its continued nuclear and missile tests. North Korea said on Saturday it had conducted another successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile that proved its ability to strike the U.S. mainland, drawing a sharp warning from Trump and a rebuke from China. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe spoke with Trump on Monday and agreed on the need for more action on North Korea just hours after the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations said Washington is “done talking about North Korea”. A White House statement after the phone call said the two leaders “agreed that North Korea poses a grave and growing direct threat to the United States, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and other countries near and far”. It said Trump “reaffirmed our ironclad commitment” to defend Japan and South Korea from any attack, “using the full range of United States capabilities”. Trump wrote on Twitter on Saturday after the missile test that he was “very disappointed” in China

and that Beijing profits from U.S. trade but had done “nothing” for the United States with regards to North Korea, something he would not allow to continue. China’s Foreign Ministry, in a statement sent to Reuters responding to Trump’s tweets, said the North Korean nuclear issue did not arise because of China and that everyone needed to work together to seek a resolution. “All parties should have a correct understanding of this,” it said, adding the international community widely recognised China’s efforts to seek a resolution. The essence of Sino-U.S. trade is mutual benefit and win-win, with a vast amount of facts proving the healthy development of business and trade ties is good for both countries, the ministry added. They aren’t related. They should not be discussed together,” Qian said. China, with which North Korea does the large majority of its trade,

has repeatedly said it strictly follows U.N. resolutions on North Korea and has denounced unilateral U.S. sanctions as unhelpful. Nikki Haley, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, said in a statement China must decide if it is willing to back imposing stronger U.N. sanctions on North Korea over Friday night’s long-range missile test, the North’s second this month. Any new U.N. Security Council resolution “that does not significantly increase the international pressure on North Korea is of no value”, Haley said, adding that Japan and South Korea also needed to do more. Abe told reporters after his conversation with Trump that repeated efforts by the international community to find a peaceful solution to the North Korean issue had yet to bear fruit in the face of Pyongyang’s unilateral “escalation”. “International society, including Russia and China, need to take this seriously and increase pressure,” Abe said. MOSCOW - President Vladimir Putin said the United States would have to cut its diplomatic staff in Russia by 755 people and that Moscow could consider additional measures against Washington as a response to new U.S. sanctions approved by Congress.

Moscow ordered the United States on Friday to cut hundreds of diplomatic staff and said it would seize two U.S. diplomatic properties after the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate overwhelmingly approved new sanctions on Russia. The White House said on Friday that U.S. President Donald Trump would sign the sanctions bill. Putin said in an interview with Vesti TV released on Sunday that the United States would have to cut its diplomatic and technical staff by 755 people by Sept. 1. “Because more than 1,000 workers - diplomats and support staff - were working and are still working in Russia, 755 must stop their activity in the Russian Federation,” he said. The new U.S. sanctions were partly a response to conclusions by U.S. intelligence agencies that Russia

meddled in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, and to punish Russia further for its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. Russia’s response suggested it had set aside initial hopes of better ties with Washington under Trump, something the Republican president, before he was elected, had said he wanted to achieve. A federal law enforcement investigation and multiple U.S. congressional probes looking into the possibility that Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia have made it harder for Trump to open a new chapter with Putin. Russia denies it interfered in the election and Trump has said there was no collusion. Moscow said on Friday that the United States had until Sept. 1 to reduce its diplomatic staff in Russia to 455 people, matching the number of Russian diplomats left in the United States after Washington expelled 35 Russians in December. On Friday, an official at the U.S. Embassy, who did not wish to be identified, said the embassy employed about 1,100 diplomatic and support staff in Russia, including Russian and U.S. citizens. Stranded Yemenis, thousands of others stand to lose “golden ticket” to U.S.

NEW YORK - Yemen is urging the U.S. government to take in dozens of Yemenis who traveled to Malaysia in recent months expecting to immigrate to the United States, only to find themselves stranded by President Donald Trump’s temporary travel ban. The ban, which was blocked by lower courts before being partially reinstated by the Supreme Court in June, temporarily bars citizens of Yemen and five other Muslimmajority countries with no “bona fide” connections to the United States from traveling there. The Supreme Court ruling sharply limited the number of people affected by the ban. Largely unreported has been the fate of one group - thousands of citizens of the six countries who won a randomized U.S. government lottery last year that enabled them to apply for a so-called green card granting them permanent residence in the United States. In a stroke of bad luck for the lottery winners, the 90-day travel ban will expire on Sept. 27, just three days before their eligibility for the green cards expires. Given the slow pace of the immigration process, the State Department will likely struggle to issue their visas in time. A recent email from the U.S. government to lottery winners still awaiting their visas warned “it is plausible that your case will not be issuable” due to the travel ban. The lottery attracts about 14 million applicants each year, many of whom view it as a chance at the

“American Dream.” It serves as a potent symbol of U.S. openness abroad, despite the fact that the chance of success is miniscule about 0.3 percent, or slightly fewer than 50,000, of lottery entrants actually got a green card in 2015. The program helps to foster an image of America “as a country which welcomes immigrants and immigration from around the world, but also especially from Africa,” said Johnnie Carson, a former U.S. assistant secretary of state for African affairs during the Obama administration. Some former diplomats worry the travel ban’s impact on the lottery could tarnish that image of inclusiveness. “Taking this away from people who have won it is the cruelest possible thing this administration could do,” said Stephen Pattison, a former senior State Department consular official. “It makes us look petty and cruel as a society.” Reuters spoke to dozens of lottery winners from Yemen, Iran and Syria, including about 20 who are still waiting for their visas to be issued. Many declined to be named so as not to risk their applications but provided emails and other documents to help confirm their accounts. They described having spent thousands of dollars on the application process, and many said they had delayed having children, sold property and turned down lucrative job offers at home because they assumed they would soon be moving to the United States. President Jokowi invites Church Council to discuss nationality

JAKARTA - Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has invited delegates from Council of Churches in Indonesia (PGI) to Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, to discuss nationality and national unity. “PGI gives lots of attention to the problems regarding our national living, regarding how we preserve our diversity together and how we build Indonesia together,” Henriette Hutabarat, PGIs Head said at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Monday. According to Henriette, the president also discussed the effort to preserve peace by building Pancasila values. Meanwhile, PGIs General Secretary, Pastor Gomar Gultom, added that the president has also stated about infrastructure improvement, which could improve the prosperity of Papua. “The infrastructure development currently underway is considered as an effort to boost Indonesias ability to compete with other countries around,” Gomar added. During the meeting, Jokowi also extended investment invitation from the government to build the infrastructures because of national budget limitation. According to PGI, the government has already taken the option towards national infrastructure development. Meanwhile, amid the spread of hoaxes in social media, PGI has asked the government to inform people regarding the development. “PGI has also delivered this message, so that whatever is being done so far, with this nations improvement, could be followed and continued by the president and not receive drawbacks from those who do not want this country to be better,” Gomar said. Aceh police foil attempt of smuggling 480 kg of hashish

ACEH - Police in Gayo Lues district, Aceh province, has arrested a 59-year old farmer on charge of smuggling 480 kilograms of hashish. “The suspect has been arrested, along with 480 kilograms of hashish in front of Blangkejeren police station in Gayo Lues on Saturday (July 29) at around 07.30 p.m. local time,” spokesman for the Aceh provincial police Senior Commissioner Goenawan said here on Sunday. The police also seized a L300 pickup and a mobile phone from the suspect, identified by his initial as S. The suspect was arrested after the police received on Saturday (July 29) a tip-off from the public that a L300 pickup carrying hashish would move past the police station. “Based on the tip-off, personnel of the crime investigation unit at the Gayo Lues district police spied on the car and stopped it in front of the Blangkejeren police station,” he said. Police officers later searched the car and found 480 kilograms of hashish, he said. “At that time the suspect, along with evidence was detained at the Gayo Lues district police station and later was handed over to the drug crime investigation unit at the Gayo Lues district police for further investigation,” he said. Vietnam asks Indonesia to investigate South China Sea shooting

HANOI- Vietnam has asked Indonesia to investigate and clarify reports that the Indonesian navy shot and wounded two Vietnamese fishermen in the South China Sea. Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh told Indonesian foreign minister Retno Marsudi by telephone that the reported incident was “very serious ... and not appropriate with the strategic partnership relationship between Vietnam and Indonesia,” the Vietnamese foreign ministry said in a statement on Friday.

“Vietnam is deeply concerned about this incident and proposes Indonesia to quickly investigate and clarify the incident and inform Vietnam of the results and to stop repeating similar acts,” Minh was quoting as saying. Earlier this week, a local Vietnamese sea rescue committee said Indonesia’s navy had shot and wounded the Vietnamese fishermen last weekend. The Vietnamese boat was about 132 nautical miles (245 km) southeast of Con Dao island when the fishermen were shot on Saturday night, the Binh Dinh provincial search and rescue committee said on its website. The report was pulled off the website the next day. Indonesia’s foreign minister told Reuters the information provided by her country’s navy on the

incident was different and said illegal fishing involving Vietnam had been a long-term issue. Marsudi said in a text message she had underlined to Vietnam’s foreign minister the importance of the countries settling negotiations on their exclusive economic zones. She said the two would meet in Manila during a regional forum next month. The Indonesian navy has yet to comment on the incident. Disputes over fishing rights and oil drilling have stoked tension in the South China Sea, through which about $5 trillion in goods is shipped each year. China claims almost the entire sea, but Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Taiwan also have claims. Although Indonesia says it is not a party to the dispute, it recently renamed the northern reaches of its exclusive economic zone, asserting its own maritime claim. The coordinates given by the Vietnamese search and rescue committee indicated that the shooting happened close to the area Indonesia now calls the North Natuna Sea. Indonesia has sunk hundreds of mostly foreign boats caught illegally fishing in its waters since President Joko Widodo launched a crackdown on the poaching of fish in 2014. Indonesia and Vietnam said in May they would launch a joint investigation after reports that Vietnamese coast guards had tried to forcibly free five fishing boats and their crew detained in waters near Indonesia’s Natuna Islands. BUDAPEST - Australian Daniel Ricciardo blasted Red Bull team mate Max Verstappen for ‘amateur’ driving on Sunday after the Dutch teenager shunted him out of the Hungarian Grand Prix on the opening lap. The two started together on the third row and Ricciardo’s car was smashed into by Verstappen at turn two with the Australian ahead. The impact sent him into a spin, damaged the radiator and left the Red Bull stranded on track with the safety car deployed. “It was amateur to say the least,” Ricciardo fumed to Sky Sports television. It’s not like he was trying to pass -- there was no room to pass... I don’t think he likes when a team mate gets in front,” he added. “You’ve got the whole race to try and repair the mistake but the pass was never on. He sees me go past and thinks ‘I’ve got to fix this’ and then we crash.” Verstappen, who was given a 10-second stop-and-go penalty but still finished fifth, said he would be apologising. “It is never my intention to hit anyone, but especially not your team mate, and especially with the relationship I have with Daniel -- it’s always really good and we can always have a laugh,” said the 19-year-old. “This is not nice and I apologise to Daniel for that and also to the team because we could have scored some good points here. Ronaldo appears before judge in tax fraud investigation

MADRID — Cristiano Ronaldo appeared before a Spanish judge Monday as part of an investigation to determine whether the Portugal forward committed tax fraud. The Real Madrid player spent more than 90 minutes answering the questions of investigating judge Monica Gomez. The session at Pozuelo de Alarcon Court No. 1 on the outskirts of Madrid was closed to the public because it is part of an ongoing investigation.

The 32-year-old Ronaldo used an alternative entrance to avoid a large swarm of journalists gathered near the main door to the court. Court officials had said that either Ronaldo or his lawyer would speak to the media after he saw the judge, but neither stepped up to the temporary podium in front of the courthouse. Judge Gomez took Ronaldo’s testimony as part of an investigation to determine if there are grounds to charge him. In June, a state prosecutor accused Ronaldo of four counts of tax fraud from 2011-14 worth 14.7 million euros ($16.5 million). The prosecutor accused the Portugal forward of having used shell companies outside Spain to hide income made from image rights. The accusation does not involve his salary from Real Madrid. Ronaldo denied any wrongdoing. The prosecutor alleged that Ronaldo used what was deemed a shell company in the Virgin Islands to “create a screen in order to hide his total income from Spain’s Tax Office.” The prosecutor accused Ronaldo of declaring 11.5 million euros ($12.8 million) earned from 2011-14 in a tax return filed in 2014, when the prosecutor said Ronaldo’s real income during that period was almost 43 million euros ($48 million). It added that Ronaldo falsely claimed the income as coming from real estate,

which “greatly” reduced his tax rate. The prosecutor also said that Ronaldo did not declare income of 28.4 million euros ($31.8 million) made from the cession of image rights from 2015-20 to another company located in Spain. Ronaldo’s agency, Gestifute, said he was up to date on his taxes and that he had maintained the same financial planning in Spain that he had while playing for Manchester United before joining Madrid in 2009. A four-time Ballon d’Or winner, Ronaldo is one of Europe’s best soccer players. He has led Madrid to back-to-back Champions League titles and helped Portugal to win last year’s European Championship. Last month, Spain’s state prosecutor also accused former Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho of defrauding 3.3 million euros ($3.7 million) in 2011 and 2012 from income made from image rights. Mourinho, now coach of Manchester United, has yet to be summoned for questioning and through his agent has denied any wrongdoing. The probes into Ronaldo and Mourinho’s financial arrangements are the most recent high-profile tax cases involving soccer’s top names in Spain. Last year, Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and his father, Jorge Horacio Messi, were found guilty on three counts of defrauding tax authorities of 4.1 million euros ($4.6 million) from income made from image rights. They have both paid additional fines in exchange for their 21-month jail sentences to be suspended. Both former Real Madrid forward Angel Di Maria and Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano have admitted to tax fraud in exchange for lighter treatment from the law, and prosecutors have also opened tax fraud investigations into former Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao and former Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao. In Spain, a judge can suspend sentences of less than two years for first-time offenders. (ap)

SAN DIEGO — Julie Ertz came in off the bench and scored in the 89th minute and the United States overcame a late two-goal deficit to beat Brazil 4-3 on Sunday night in the Tournament of Nations. The United States was in danger of losing for the fourth time this year before the threegoal flurry in about nine minutes. Two minutes after Brazil’s Andressinha scored on a free kick in the 78th minute for her second goal of the game, Christen Press countered to make it 3-2 with her 43rd career goal and second of the year. Press fed Megan Rapinoe for a spectacular running blast that tied it in the 85th minute, and Ertz put the Americans ahead four minutes later. Ertz is using her married name after playing as Julie Johnston. Rapinoe, who was recovering from knee surgery for much of last year, had not scored for the national team since the 2015 World Cup. Fan wants more Chinese to follow Zhang’s overseas adventure HONG KONG - China World Cup defender Fan Zhiyi has called for more players from the country to follow in the footsteps of striker Zhang Yuning and test themselves in Europe’s leading leagues. Zhang, who spent the last two seasons playing in the Netherlands with Vitesse, signed a three-year contract with West Bromwich Albion in early July before being immediately sent on a two-year loan to Bundesliga side Werder Bremen. The 20-year-old is the only member of China’s national squad currently playing in Europe and Fan, who played a key role in qualifying China for their only World Cup appearance in 2002, wants to see more players from the country follow suit. “For me, they should try,” Fan, who had spells at Crystal Palace, Dundee and Cardiff City during his playing career, told Reuters. “They shouldn’t only say that I can play in Europe, they should try. Players running down their contracts will become the norm in years to come due to skyrocketing transfer fees, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said. Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil have both entered the final year of their deals, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs could also leave Arsenal for free in 12 months’ time. Wenger tried to see the positive side, saying it could be an “ideal situation” for the club as the players would be motivated to perform to impress potential suitors. “I think in the future, you will see it more and more. Why? Because the transfers are so high, even for normal players,” he told reporters on Sunday. “You will see more and more players going into the final year of the contract because no club will want to pay the amount demanded... in the next 10 years, it will become usual. “I think the performance on the day does not depend on the length of the contract, if that was true we would sign everyone for 20 years and be happy.” Sanchez, who was Arsenal’s top scorer in the Premier League with 24 goals last season, has been linked with a move to Paris St Germain in the French media, but Wenger was adamant he would stay at the Emirates Stadium. “Do I think he will stay? Yes, of course. How many times did I tell you that?,” the Frenchman added. “One day, he will go and Arsenal will go on.
