The newspaper said that Beasley, the second-overall pick of the 2008 NBA entry draft, has spent the last two weeks in a Houston rehab as part of the NBA’s substance abuse programme to address concerns over his mental state and drug abuse. According to the paper, the team is concerned about pictures and messages posted to the player’s Twitter page. The photos show Beasley showing off a tattoo on his back in front of a mirror with two bags on either side which are rumoured to be filled with marijuana. The messages reportedly indicated Beasley writing that life was not worth living. Both the picture and the posts have been removed, the paper said. The paper quotes Beasley’s advisor Bruce Shingler saying he was unsure how long the player will be required to stay in rehab.

MOSCOW - A Russian court on Tuesday sentenced a man to 14 years in jail for bludgeoning a Jesuit priest to death amid bizarre circumstances in October, Russian news agencies reported. Mikhail Orekhov, 36, killed Ecuadoran priest Victor Betancourt by hitting him six times in the head and five times in the face with a metal dumb-bell at the priest’s Moscow flat, investigators have said. Moscow City Court sentenced Orekhov to 14 years in jail after he was found guilty by a jury with no attenuating circumstances, news agencies said. The Interfax news agency quoted the investigative committee of Russian prosecutors as saying that Orekhov killed Betancourt in an act of revenge after the Jesuit tried to seduce him. “The investigation has shown that Orekhov decided to kill
Betancourt while drunk ... after the victim tried to tempt the Russian into carrying out joint acts of a sexual nature,” a committee spokesman was quoted as saying. TEGUCIGALPA - Seven foreign ministers from the Americas and a top regional official were in Honduras Monday in a bid to end the crisis set off by the ouster of President Manuel Zelaya almost two months ago. The polarized Central American nation hit political deadlock after the June 28 military coup backed by the country’s courts and Congress. The head of the Organization of American States (OAS), Jose Miguel Insulza, joined the foreign ministers in meetings with politicians, business and church leaders in the capital, Tegucigalpa. The official aim of the two-day visit was to convince the interim government of Roberto Micheletti to accept a proposal by conflict mediator and Costa Rican President Oscar Arias to reinstall Zelaya as president.
The United States, which has strong military and commercial ties with Honduras, strongly backed the latest crisis mission, saying it supplied an aircraft that took the delegation to Honduras. “We continue to believe that the Honduran people deserve a peaceful negotiated agreement to which all parties can commit, and that this (Costa Rica) accord presents the best opportunity,” State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters. Foreign governments from Venezuela to the United States have condemned the coup, but international pressure, including frozen aid and withdrawn ambassadors, has so far failed to budge the de facto leaders. It should have separated at around 302km. “A joint probe is under way by South Korean and Russian engineers to find the exact cause,” the minister said. Experts from the Korea Aerospace Research Institute told Yonhap news agency they were trying to track the whereabouts of the satellite and declined to say if contact could be made later. They said that despite the satellite’s failure to reach its proper orbit, the launch should be seen as a “half success” since the rocket functioned without any problem. “The rocket was successfully launched. I congratulate our people,” Prime Minister Han Seung-Soo said earlier from the launch site at Goheung on the south coast. North
Korea, which is smarting over UN Security Council censure of its own rocket launch in April, had vowed to closely monitor the launch. Pyongyang insists it was unfairly punished for its April 5 launch, saying it merely put a peaceful communications satellite into orbit. It wants Seoul’s launch also to be referred to the Security Council. Washington and its allies have said no North Korean satellite was detected in orbit and its launch was a disguised test of a Taepodong-2 missile. Seoul has bristled at any comparisons with its neighbour’s operation, insisting its own project is purely scientific. The US State Department said last week that South Korea — in contrast to the North — had developed its programme transparently and in keeping with international agreements. The launch of Seoul’s rocket, built and operated in partnership with Russia, follows seven delays since 2005. Last week a software problem halted the countdown with just eight minutes to go. South Korea, an international economic powerhouse, entered Asia’s space race relatively late. It has invested 502.5 billion won (419 million dollars) and much national pride in the 33-metre (108-foot) rocket, whose first stage was built in Russia and the second stage by local engineers. South Korea has previously sent 10 satellites into space using launch vehicles from other countries.

STOCKHOLM - The Pirate Bay, one of the world’s most popular filesharing websites, is off the Internet after a Swedish court threatened its bandwith supplier with a hefty fine, news reports said Tuesday. Stockholm’s district court on Monday ordered Black Internet to stop providing bandwidth to The Pirate Bay or face a fine of 500,000 kronor (70,000 dollars, 50,000 euros). “We received the decision about the fine shortly after lunch and shut down the capacity just before 3:00 pm,” Black Internet’s chief executive Victor Moeller told the online edition of the Dagens Nyheter newspaper. There are laws and rules in society and they should be respected,” he said. AFP’s attempts to access the website on Tuesday were unsuccessful. A Swedish court in April found the four men behind The Pirate Bay guilty of promoting copyright infringement by running the site, sentencing them to a year in prison. They were also ordered to pay damages of 30 million kronor (2.72 million euros, 3.56 million dollars) to the movie and recording industry. The four have appealed the verdict, and — prior to Monday — the site remained in operation. However, the movie industry in July again sued The Pirate Bay over 100 movies and television series, demanding that the three men who run the site (the fourth is their financier) and
Black Internet be prevented from operating the site. The Stockholm court ruled on Monday that Black Internet had to pull The Pirate Bay off the web until the latest lawsuit has been resolved, or pay the fine, Dagens Nyheter said. Moeller said he expected The Pirate Bay to be up and running shortly through another provider. “They’re going to be able to re-route and get capacity elsewhere, but it will take a little time,” he told the paper. Founded in 2003, The Pirate Bay makes it possible to skirt copyright fees and share music, film and computer game files using bit torrent technology, or peer-to-peer links offered on the site. None of the material can be found on The Pirate Bay server itself. The Pirate Bay claims to have some 22 million users worldwide. The site has been subject of a takeover bid in recent weeks after Global Gaming Factory (GGF), a Swedish online games firm, claimed on June 30 it acquired the Pirate Bay for a sum of 60 million kronor (5.9 million euros, 8.5 million dollars). But media in Sweden have suggested that the acquisition announcement was merely a bluff to boost Global Gaming Factory’s share price and now the Swedish Economic Crime Authority has opened an investigation into potential irregularities.

Dino Amor Pareja, the leader of the Rajah Solaiman Movement, a group of Christians who had converted to become Islamic militants, was captured at his hideout in the southern city of Marawi on Friday, national police chief Edgardo Verzosa told a news conference. Verzosa said the US Department of Defense had offered a 90,000-dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect. An unnamed informant received a separate 500,000peso (10,000-dollar) reward for the arrest, he added. The police chief described Pareja as a skilled bomb-maker who was trained

KUALA LUMPUR - Britain has indicated it will refuse requests to hold an inquiry into a 1948 massacre of Malaysian villagers by British troops, campaigners said Tuesday. Solicitor John Halford, who is representing the families in Britain, said a letter from British government lawyers dated August 21 said there had been a provisional decision to reject any probe into the killings. “They say that they are minded to refuse a public inquiry or further investigation but are willing to listen to our representations,” Halford told AFP by telephone. “It is not likely they will change their mind and it is likely that we will have to take a legal case to do that,” he added. The “Batang Kali massacre” occurred in a village in central Selangor state on December 12, 1948, when 14 members of the Scots Guards killed 24 unarmed ethnic Chinese and torched their village. In the letter from government lawyers, a copy of which was provided to AFP, they said they accepted that people were killed but that there were differing accounts of what happened. That made it difficult to determine what occurred and “an inquiry would unlikely to be in a position to reach firm conclusions about what happened in December 1948,” it said. The British embassy in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur was not
immediately able to confirm the details of the letter. Halford said that although the British government was willing to consider further submissions on the issue, any further delay in holding an inquiry would jeopardise the case as many witnesses are already in their 80s. “A delay in this case in itself is a denial of justice,” he said. In April, the British government agreed to re-examine an earlier decision to reject a probe which activists have been campaigning for since 1993. The activists say they have traced nine former British soldiers and four Malaysians who were witnesses to the events, but that this pool will dwindle if the legal process takes too long. The incident was explained away in 1948 with the then Malayan attorney general saying an inquiry had been held and the troops vindicated, although no trace of this investigation has been found. The massacre remained largely forgotten until 1970 when a British newspaper ran an explosive account of the killings, publishing sworn affidavits by several soldiers involved who admitted the villagers were shot in cold blood. The revelations triggered uproar in Britain but a promised investigation was later dropped after a change in government. The guerrilla war left thousands dead and formally ended only in 1989 with the signing of a peace treaty with the Malayan Communist Party.

BUDAPEST - Hungarian police said Tuesday that four suspects carefully planned “racist” attacks on the Roma minority over 13 months in which six people were murdered, one a woman shot dead in her bed. Four members of a gang suspected of being behind the killings were arrested in a bar in the city of Debrecen last Friday after a hunt in which US Federal Bureau of Investigation agents and experts from other European police agencies were called in to help. National Investigation Office chief Attila Petofi told a press conference that DNA evidence had linked two suspects to the crimes which terrorised Hungary’s Roma community. He said DNA evidence against the other two was being analysed. Six hunting rifles and other guns,
ammunition were seized, Petofi said. The four men are aged between 28 and 42, the police chief added. They include a pastry chef, a sound technician and a soldier but all had been working at the bar where they were detained. “The execution of the attacks was characterised by strategic planning and professional experience in arms use,” Petofi told reporters. “The suspects’ motivations are presumably racist, but we can clearly state this only if the suspects explain their actions,” he said. Over 13 months, shots were fired at 16 houses “threatening the lives of 55 people,” Petofi said. Eleven Molotov cocktails were thrown at four houses. The first fatal attack came in November last year when a Roma couple were killed in Nagycsecs by a gang armed with shotguns and a Molotov cocktail.

Jakarta - A BNI Bank economist, Tony A Prasetyantono, has welcomed the agreement reached by the government and the House of Representatives (DPR) to set the economic growth target for 2010 at 5.5 percent. The figure is higher than the 5 percent earlier fixed by the government. “I fully support the newly agreed target. The earlier figure suggested by the government, 5 percent, showed the government has no vision, no ambition. It could be achieved without much effort,” he said. Tony said the 5,5 percent growth rate could be achieved by pushing investment. Since national banks’ interest rates had decreased significantly, he said,
banks could now be more expansive in distributing credits. Therefore, bank credits could grow by up to 15 percent. The economist also said the government needed to develop other sectors such as infrastructure, manufacturing and agriculture followed by efforts to maximize absorption of the work force. “Recent conditions showed that the dominant growth sectors are communication and transportation which are known being less able to absorb new employees,” he said.
Tony also said the future economic growth rate as stated by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was too conservative. The target of seven percent economic growth which is planned to be achieved by year 2014, he said, did not reflect the government’s will to push the national economy. “The seven percent economic growth target should be reached earlier, namely by year 2012. The government should have higher target for 2014, say, eight percent minimally” he said.

MELBOURNE - Australian drinks giant Foster’s Group posted a four percent rise in annual net profit Tuesday but declining wine earnings took some of the fizz out of a strong domestic beer market. The country’s biggest brewer and the world’s second-largest wine company said net profit for the 12 months to June was 741.5 million dollars (622.1 million US), up from 713.2 million year on year. Net profit after one-off items increased 292.3 percent to 438.3 million dollars, as writedowns linked to the restructure of its troubled wine business fell to 397.6 million from 770 million. The company said the domestic market remained “very robust”, with earnings from beer, cider and spirits up 2.9 percent to 803.2 million dollars in Australia, Asia and the Pacific. It said that figure rose to 9.6 percent when currency fluctuations were stripped out of the equation. But global wine earnings dropped 7.3 percent to 363.9 million dollars and chief executive Ian Johnston said the market would remain challenging in 2010 because of the worldwide slump.
“The wine category is bearing the full brunt of a lack of consumer confidence brought on by global economic conditions,” he said. “Wine returns are not where we want them to be, but it remains a profitable business, producing exceptional quality wines, and continues to generate solid cash flows.” Foster’s announced earlier this year that it would not sell off its wine assets, which have long weighed on the company’s bottom line, preferring to restructure them in the hope of turning around the ailing business. As part of the restructuring, Foster’s will sell 36 “non-core” vineyards and three wineries in Australia and California. The firm spent almost seven billion dollars expanding its wine business with acquisitions of firms such as Australia’s Southcorp and Beringer in the United States earlier this decade. However, the buyouts soured as the market nosedive. The company said the restructuring had reaped savings of 21 million dollars in the year to June and the figure was set to rise to 100 million in the 2011 financial year. Indonesian national Muhamad Jibril Abdurahman, alias Muhamad Ricky Ardan bin Mohammad Iqbal, was linked to the network that carried out the attacks on the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels that killed nine people, police said. “He’s suspected of having a role in the overseas funding. The police are not yet able to reveal in detail the source of the financing,” national police spokesman Nanan Soekarna told a press conference. “He’s linked to the group behind the Marriott and Ritz bombings.” Muhamad Jibril’s addition to the wanted list brings to six the number of suspects being sought by police in connection to the July 17 attacks, including Malaysian alleged mastermind Noordin Mohammed Top. He is an accomplice of detained Saudi national Al Khalil Ali, who was arrested last week on suspicion of channeling funds from abroad to pay for the attacks, the spokesman said.
Five other alleged members of the cell have been killed, including the two suicide bombers and the operational planner, police said. Five others have been arrested but one, an Indonesian called Iwan, was subsequently released. Analysts have said that if the funding for the attacks came from abroad, a likely source would be AlQaeda. Police have not confirmed any connection between the hotel blasts and Saudi-born Osama bin Laden’s organisation. Al-Qaeda has allegedly financed previous suicide attacks in Indonesia including the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people, and Noordin’s first major operation, a 2003 truck bombing of the Jakarta Marriott that killed 12 people. Noordin, 41, calls himself leader of “Al-Qaeda in the Malay Archipelago”, a splinter group of the Jemaah Islamiyah terror network blamed for the Bali attacks.

Jakarta - Jakarta traffic police nabbed a total of 101 motorcyclists in early morning operations against illegal road races in the capital city on Tuesday. The Jakarta police Traffic Management Center (TMC) said the po-
lice conducted their operations from 01:00 am to 06:am Western Indonesia Standard Time (WIB) in several parts of Jakarta. All the 101 illegal racers were given speeding tickets while four motorcycles were confiscated because the riders were unable to show the police registration papers on the
vehicles. During the Muslim fasting month of Ramadhan, the police launched night operation mainly against illegal motorbike racers in the capital city. In addition, police had also asked the public to report any illegal motorcycle race in the streets by sending a text message (SMS) to num-
ber 1717. Previously, Jakarta traffic police affairs director, Senior Commissioner Yaya Ahmudiarto said, police had launched the so-called Ramadhan operation in a bid to secure law and order. The operation target are among other things places surrounding places of worship.

She also said that the number of foreign tourists to Bali had increased by 10.25 percent compared to the 971,061 in the first semester of 2008. “The Malaysians came to Bali through Ngurah Rai airport, and none of them used a sealiner,”Ida Komang Wisnu said. In June 2009 the number of Malaysians visiting Bali reached 15,661, up 39.77 percent compared to only 11,205 in June 2008. Malaysia ranked fourth after Australia, Japan, and China of the 10 countries with the biggest number of ciziens visiting Bali. INGREDIENTS: 600 gr duck or chicken meat, minced 2 cups freshly grated coconut 5 kaffir lime leaves, very finely shredded 1 tsp black peppercorns, crushed 1 tsp salt 3-5 bird’s eye chilies, very finely chopped 2 tbsp chopped palm sugar lemon grass or satay skewers SPICE PASTE: 12 shallots, peeled and sliced 6 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced 3 red chilies, sliced 2.5 cm galangal (laos), peeled and sliced 2.5 cm kencur, peeled and sliced 5 cm fresh turmeric, peeled and sliced 2 tsp coriander ½ tsp black peppercorn 3 candlenuts 1 tsp dried shrimp paste pinch of freshly grated nutmeg 2 cloves 2 tbsp oil PREPARATION: Grind or blend all spice paste ingredients except oil. Heat oil and sauté spice paste for about 5 minutes. Cool then combine with duck and all other ingredients except lemon grass. Mould about 2 tablespoonfuls on lemon grass or skewers and grill over hot charcoal and golden brown.

(Ox Tongue In Sweet Nutmeg Sauce) OVERVIEW: Although native to Indonesia, the nutmeg is not often used in cooking. One exception is the braised meat dish known as Semur, which is generally made with beef. This Balinese version uses ox tongue and partners the inimitable fragrance of nutmeg with sweet soy sauce. INGREDIENTS: 2,5 lt (10 cups) water 600 gr (1 ¼ lb) ox tongue, washed well 1 cup beef stock 4 tbsp sweet soy sauce (kecap manis) 2 tbsp thin soy sauce ¾ tsp ground black pepper ¼ tsp freshly grated nutmeg 4 ea salam leaves 3 fragrant lime leaves 3 tbsp fried shallots 3 medium size potatoes, peeled and cut in 2 cm (3/4 in dice) Fried shallots to garnish PREPARATION: 1. Bring water to boil in a heavy stockpot, add beef spice paste and salam leaves, whole ox tongue and bring back to boil. 2. Reduce heat and simmer for approximately 3 hours or until tongue is cooked and very tender. 3. Plunge ox tongue into ice water and cool for 5 minutes. Peel skin off with a sharp knife. 4. Slice ox tongue in thin even slices and place in saucepan. 5. Fill up with beef stock and add all remaining ingredients. Bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. 6. Add potatoes and continue to simmer until potatoes are cooked. 7. Garnish with fried shallots.

Indonesian national Muhamad Jibril Abdurahman, alias Muhamad Ricky Ardan bin Mohammad Iqbal, was linked to the network that carried out the attacks on the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels that killed nine people, police said. “He’s suspected of having a role in the overseas funding. The police are not yet able to reveal in detail the source of the financing,” national police spokesman Nanan Soekarna told a press conference. “He’s linked to the group behind the Marriott and Ritz bombings.” Muhamad Jibril’s addition to the wanted list brings to six the number of suspects being sought by police in connection to the July 17 attacks, including Malaysian alleged mastermind Noordin Mohammed Top. He is an accomplice of detained Saudi national Al Khalil Ali, who was arrested last week on suspicion of channeling funds from abroad to pay for the attacks, the spokesman said.
Five other alleged members of the cell have been killed, including the two suicide bombers and the operational planner, police said. Five others have been arrested but one, an Indonesian called Iwan, was subsequently released. Analysts have said that if the funding for the attacks came from abroad, a likely source would be AlQaeda. Police have not confirmed any connection between the hotel blasts and Saudi-born Osama bin Laden’s organisation. Al-Qaeda has allegedly financed previous suicide attacks in Indonesia including the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people, and Noordin’s first major operation, a 2003 truck bombing of the Jakarta Marriott that killed 12 people. Noordin, 41, calls himself leader of “Al-Qaeda in the Malay Archipelago”, a splinter group of the Jemaah Islamiyah terror network blamed for the Bali attacks.

Verzosa said the US Department of Defense had offered a 90,000-dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect. Solicitor John Halford, who is representing the families in Britain, said a letter from British government lawyers dated August 21 said there had been a provisional decision to reject any probe into the killings. “They say that they are minded to refuse a public inquiry or further investigation but are willing to listen to our representations,” Halford told AFP by telephone. “It is not likely they will change their mind and it is likely that we will have to take a legal case to do that,” he added. The “Batang Kali massacre” occurred in a village in central Selangor state on December 12, 1948, when 14 members of the Scots Guards killed 24 unarmed ethnic Chinese and torched their village. In the letter from government lawyers, a copy of which was provided to AFP, they said they accepted that people were killed but that there were differing accounts of what happened. That made it difficult to determine what occurred and “an inquiry would unlikely to be in a position to reach firm conclusions about what happened in December 1948,” it said. The British embassy in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur was not
immediately able to confirm the details of the letter. Halford said that although the British government was willing to consider further submissions on the issue, any further delay in holding an inquiry would jeopardise the case as many witnesses are already in their 80s. “A delay in this case in itself is a denial of justice,” he said. In April, the British government agreed to re-examine an earlier decision to reject a probe which activists have been campaigning for since 1993. The activists say they have traced nine former British soldiers and four Malaysians who were witnesses to the events, but that this pool will dwindle if the legal process takes too long. The incident was explained away in 1948 with the then Malayan attorney general saying an inquiry had been held and the troops vindicated, although no trace of this investigation has been found. The massacre remained largely forgotten until 1970 when a British newspaper ran an explosive account of the killings, publishing sworn affidavits by several soldiers involved who admitted the villagers were shot in cold blood. The revelations triggered uproar in Britain but a promised investigation was later dropped after a change in government. The guerrilla war left thousands dead and formally ended only in 1989 with the signing of a peace treaty with the Malayan Communist Party.

BUDAPEST - Hungarian police said Tuesday that four suspects carefully planned “racist” attacks on the Roma minority over 13 months in which six people were murdered, one a woman shot dead in her bed. Four members of a gang suspected of being behind the killings were arrested in a bar in the city of Debrecen last Friday after a hunt in which US Federal Bureau of Investigation agents and experts from other European police agencies were called in to help. National Investigation Office chief Attila Petofi told a press conference that DNA evidence had linked two suspects to the crimes which terrorised Hungary’s Roma community. He said DNA evidence against the other two was being analysed. Six hunting rifles and other guns,
ammunition were seized, Petofi said. The four men are aged between 28 and 42, the police chief added. They include a pastry chef, a sound technician and a soldier but all had been working at the bar where they were detained. “The execution of the attacks was characterised by strategic planning and professional experience in arms use,” Petofi told reporters. “The suspects’ motivations are presumably racist, but we can clearly state this only if the suspects explain their actions,” he said. Over 13 months, shots were fired at 16 houses “threatening the lives of 55 people,” Petofi said. Eleven Molotov cocktails were thrown at four houses. The first fatal attack came in November last year when a Roma couple were killed in Nagycsecs by a gang armed with shotguns and a Molotov cocktail.

Jakarta - A BNI Bank economist, Tony A Prasetyantono, has welcomed the agreement reached by the government and the House of Representatives (DPR) to set the economic growth target for 2010 at 5.5 percent. The figure is higher than the 5 percent earlier fixed by the government. “I fully support the newly agreed target. The earlier figure suggested by the government, 5 percent, showed the government has no vision, no ambition. It could be achieved without much effort,” he said. Tony said the 5,5 percent growth rate could be achieved by pushing investment. Since national banks’ interest rates had decreased significantly, he said,
banks could now be more expansive in distributing credits. Therefore, bank credits could grow by up to 15 percent. The economist also said the government needed to develop other sectors such as infrastructure, manufacturing and agriculture followed by efforts to maximize absorption of the work force. “Recent conditions showed that the dominant growth sectors are communication and transportation which are known being less able to absorb new employees,” he said.
Tony also said the future economic growth rate as stated by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was too conservative. The target of seven percent economic growth which is planned to be achieved by year 2014, he said, did not reflect the government’s will to push the national economy. “The seven percent economic growth target should be reached earlier, namely by year 2012. The government should have higher target for 2014, say, eight percent minimally” he said.

MELBOURNE - Australian drinks giant Foster’s Group posted a four percent rise in annual net profit Tuesday but declining wine earnings took some of the fizz out of a strong domestic beer market. The country’s biggest brewer and the world’s second-largest wine company said net profit for the 12 months to June was 741.5 million dollars (622.1 million US), up from 713.2 million year on year. Net profit after one-off items increased 292.3 percent to 438.3 million dollars, as writedowns linked to the restructure of its troubled wine business fell to 397.6 million from 770 million. The company said the domestic market remained “very robust”, with earnings from beer, cider and spirits up 2.9 percent to 803.2 million dollars in Australia, Asia and the Pacific. It said that figure rose to 9.6 percent when currency fluctuations were stripped out of the equation. But global wine earnings dropped 7.3 percent to 363.9 million dollars and chief executive Ian Johnston said the market would remain challenging in 2010 because of the worldwide slump.
“The wine category is bearing the full brunt of a lack of consumer confidence brought on by global economic conditions,” he said. “Wine returns are not where we want them to be, but it remains a profitable business, producing exceptional quality wines, and continues to generate solid cash flows.” Foster’s announced earlier this year that it would not sell off its wine assets, which have long weighed on the company’s bottom line, preferring to restructure them in the hope of turning around the ailing business. As part of the restructuring, Foster’s will sell 36 “non-core” vineyards and three wineries in Australia and California. The firm spent almost seven billion dollars expanding its wine business with acquisitions of firms such as Australia’s Southcorp and Beringer in the United States earlier this decade. However, the buyouts soured as the market nosedive. The company said the restructuring had reaped savings of 21 million dollars in the year to June and the figure was set to rise to 100 million in the 2011 financial year. Foster’s shares closed steady at 5.42 dollars on an Australian market that was down 0.46 percent overall.

Security technology company McAfee Inc. on Tuesday reported that searches for the 27-year-old actress are more likely to lead to online threats such as spyware and viruses than searches for any other celebrity. McAfee said fans searching for the actress have a one-in-five chance of ending up at a Web site designed to damage one’s computer. Its the third annual report on the subject from McAfee, which last year found that Brad Pitt was the “most dangerous” celeb online. “Cybercriminals are star watchers, too,” said Jeff Green, senior vice president of McAfee’s product development. “They latch onto popular celebrities to encourage the download of malicious software in disguise.” Following Biel in the report, in order, were Beyonce, Jennifer Aniston, Tom Brady and Jessica Simpson. McAfee noted President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama are curiously safe searches, ranking no. 34 and no. 39, respectively.

Russian sentenced to 14 years for killing Jesuit Agence France-Presse
MOSCOW - A Russian court on Tuesday sentenced a man to 14 years in jail for bludgeoning a Jesuit priest to death amid bizarre circumstances in October, Russian news agencies reported. Mikhail Orekhov, 36, killed Ecuadoran priest Victor Betancourt by hitting him six times in the head and five times in the face with a metal dumb-bell at the priest’s Moscow flat, investigators have said. Moscow City Court sentenced Orekhov to 14 years in jail after he was found guilty by a jury with no attenuating circumstances, news agencies said. The Interfax news agency quoted the investigative committee of Russian prosecutors as saying that Orekhov killed Betancourt in an act of revenge after the Jesuit tried to seduce him. “The investigation has shown that Orekhov decided to kill
Betancourt while drunk ... after the victim tried to tempt the Russian into carrying out joint acts of a sexual nature,” a committee spokesman was quoted as saying. The dead body of another Jesuit priest, Otto Messmer, 47, a Russian citizen born in Kazakhstan to a family of German origin, was also discovered at the same apartment. Investigators suspected Orekhov of committing that murder to cover up the killing of Betancourt. However the jury cleared him on this count. Betancourt, 42, had been in charge of preparing candidates to become Jesuits at the Saint Thomas Institute in Moscow. According to the Vatican, there are about 1.5 million Roman Catholics in Russia. The Holy See has strained relations with the Russian Orthodox Church, which has voiced dissatisfaction with Catholic proselytising in the country.

TEGUCIGALPA - Seven foreign ministers from the Americas and a top regional official were in Honduras Monday in a bid to end the crisis set off by the ouster of President Manuel Zelaya almost two months ago. The polarized Central American nation hit political deadlock after the June 28 military coup backed by the country’s courts and Congress. The head of the Organization of American States (OAS), Jose Miguel Insulza, joined the foreign ministers in meetings with politicians, business and church leaders in the capital, Tegucigalpa. The official aim of the two-day visit was to convince the interim government of Roberto Micheletti to accept a proposal by conflict mediator and Costa Rican President Oscar Arias to reinstall Zelaya as president.
The United States, which has strong military and commercial ties with Honduras, strongly backed the latest crisis mission, saying it supplied an aircraft that took the delegation to Honduras. “We continue to believe that the Honduran people deserve a peaceful negotiated agreement to which all parties can commit, and that this (Costa Rica) accord presents the best opportunity,” State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters. Foreign governments from Venezuela to the United States have condemned the coup, but international pressure, including frozen aid and withdrawn ambassadors, has so far failed to budge the de facto leaders. They are still seeking support for their position that a constitutional succession, not a coup, took place in Honduras, because Zelaya violated the law by seeking to change the constitution.

But science and technology minister Ahn Byong-Man said it was not following the designated orbit, hampering communications with mission control. “All aspects of the launch were normal, but the satellite exceeded its planned orbit and reached an altitude of 360 kilometres (225 miles),” Ahn said. It should have separated at around 302km. “A joint probe is under way by South Korean and Russian engineers to find the exact cause,” the minister said. Experts from the Korea Aerospace Research Institute told Yonhap news agency they were trying to track the whereabouts of the satellite and declined to say if contact could be made later. They said that despite the satellite’s failure to reach its proper orbit, the launch should be seen as a “half success” since the rocket functioned without any problem. “The rocket was successfully launched. I congratulate our people,” Prime Minister Han Seung-Soo said earlier from the launch site at Goheung on the south coast. North
Korea, which is smarting over UN Security Council censure of its own rocket launch in April, had vowed to closely monitor the launch. Pyongyang insists it was unfairly punished for its April 5 launch, saying it merely put a peaceful communications satellite into orbit. It wants Seoul’s launch also to be referred to the Security Council. Washington and its allies have said no North Korean satellite was detected in orbit and its launch was a disguised test of a Taepodong-2 missile. Seoul has bristled at any comparisons with its neighbour’s operation, insisting its own project is purely scientific. The US State Department said last week that South Korea — in contrast to the North — had developed its programme transparently and in keeping with international agreements. The launch of Seoul’s rocket, built and operated in partnership with Russia, follows seven delays since 2005. Last week a software problem halted the countdown with just eight minutes to go. South Korea, an international economic powerhouse, entered Asia’s space race relatively late. It has invested 502.5 billion won (419 million dollars) and much national pride in the 33-metre (108-foot) rocket, whose first stage was built in Russia and the second stage by local engineers. South Korea has previously sent 10 satellites into space using launch vehicles from other countries.

STOCKHOLM - The Pirate Bay, one of the world’s most popular filesharing websites, is off the Internet after a Swedish court threatened its bandwith supplier with a hefty fine, news reports said Tuesday. Stockholm’s district court on Monday ordered Black Internet to stop providing bandwidth to The Pirate Bay or face a fine of 500,000 kronor (70,000 dollars, 50,000 euros). “We received the decision about the fine shortly after lunch and shut down the capacity just before 3:00 pm,” Black Internet’s chief executive Victor Moeller told the online edition of the Dagens Nyheter newspaper. There are laws and rules in society and they should be respected,” he said. AFP’s attempts to access the website on Tuesday were unsuccessful. A Swedish court in April found the four men behind The Pirate Bay guilty of promoting copyright infringement by running the site, sentencing them to a year in prison. They were also ordered to pay damages of 30 million kronor (2.72 million euros, 3.56 million dollars) to the movie and recording industry. The four have appealed the verdict, and — prior to Monday — the site remained in operation. However, the movie industry in July again sued The Pirate Bay over 100 movies and television series, demanding that the three men who run the site (the fourth is their financier) and
Black Internet be prevented from operating the site. The Stockholm court ruled on Monday that Black Internet had to pull The Pirate Bay off the web until the latest lawsuit has been resolved, or pay the fine, Dagens Nyheter said. Moeller said he expected The Pirate Bay to be up and running shortly through another provider. “They’re going to be able to re-route and get capacity elsewhere, but it will take a little time,” he told the paper. Founded in 2003, The Pirate Bay makes it possible to skirt copyright fees and share music, film and computer game files using bit torrent technology, or peer-to-peer links offered on the site. None of the material can be found on The Pirate Bay server itself. The Pirate Bay claims to have some 22 million users worldwide. The site has been subject of a takeover bid in recent weeks after Global Gaming Factory (GGF), a Swedish online games firm, claimed on June 30 it acquired the Pirate Bay for a sum of 60 million kronor (5.9 million euros, 8.5 million dollars). But media in Sweden have suggested that the acquisition announcement was merely a bluff to boost Global Gaming Factory’s share price and now the Swedish Economic Crime Authority has opened an investigation into potential irregularities.

The newspaper said that Beasley, the second-overall pick of the 2008 NBA entry draft, has spent the last two weeks in a Houston rehab as part of the NBA’s substance abuse programme to address concerns over his mental state and drug abuse. According to the paper, the team is concerned about pictures and messages posted to the player’s Twitter page. The photos show Beasley showing off a tattoo on his back in front of a mirror with two bags on either side which are rumoured to be filled with marijuana. The messages reportedly indicated Beasley writing that life was not worth living. Both the picture and the posts have been removed, the paper said.
