3 Australians critically ill after rare thunderstorm asthma

MELBOURNE — Three patients remained critically ill on Thursday, three days after a rare condition known as thunderstorm asthma killed four people and sent hundreds to hospitals in Australia’s second-largest city, an official said. Doctors were amazed there were not more fatalities given the numbers of people who suffered cardiac arrests and struggled to breathe when a wild thunderstorm struck Melbourne on Monday night, Victoria state Health Minister Jill Hennessy said. The storm caused rain-sodden ryegrass pollen to explode and disperse over the city, with ruptured particles penetrating deep into lungs. Almost one third of patients who suffered asthma attacks on Monday reported never having asthma before.

Nine patients remained in intensive care units on Thursday after the unprecedented event that overwhelmed Melbourne’s hospitals and emergency services, Hennessy said. The condition of three of those patients was listed as critical, she said. “I’m pleased we haven’t had more deaths ... but those deaths are four deaths too many,” Hennessy told reporters. Experts were trying to determine whether asthma thunderstorms could be predicted, and the Aus-

tralian Bureau of Meteorology and other government agencies met with pollen scientists Thursday to discuss whether future events could be accurately forecast. Melbourne University botanist Ed Newbigin, who runs Melbourne’s main pollen-counting station, said forecasting such events should be possible.

To earn extra money, SOS children make waste newspaper crafts

To earn extra money, foster children of SOS Taruna Bantas in East Selemadeg included in the family base care (FBC) program or direct nurturing show off their creativity by making waste newspaper crafts. Their craft products include basket of fruit for prayer and vase that can be seen on the stand of KWT Sari Nadi in a series of the handicraft exhibition in the Mario Cultural Hall Tabanan taking place until Sunday (Nov. 27). Patron of the SOS, I Wayan Budiarta, explained on Tuesday (Nov. 23) that newspaper crafts were made by SOS children of elementary and junior high school. Though they are still children, their handicraft products are very neat and pretty. According to Budiarta, the craft making from waste newspapers at least can be completed in a month. “We also consider their spare time beyond learning and attending school,” said Budiarta. The price set for the newspaper craft product varies according to level of difficulty and the length of workmanship. A vase is sold for IDR 150,000 each, while large sokasi basket is sold for IDR 350,000 each. Proceeding sale of the waste newspapers craft will be given to children making the craft for their pocket money and other daily necessities. Aside from waste newspaper

crafts, the SOS also encourages all the families included in the family strengthening program through the making of virgin coconut oil (VCO). He said that so far only two villages have been trained and can produce VCO. They are 20 people from Dalang village (East Selemadeg) and six others from Gadung Sari village (East Selemadeg). The VCO product is not only offering original aroma, but also enriched with aromatherapy such as frangipani, jasmine and sandalwood. “The making of VCO is targeting families included in the SOS family strengthening program,” said Budiarta. Family strengthening program means to provide guidance for families of the children who have almost lost their parental rights. To make the family economically independent, they are encouraged to make a con-

certed business, where one of which is making VCO. Their VCO products are marketed in the area of East Selemadeg only and offered from door to door. Result of the selling is then divided between mentored family, rolling fund and development fund for their children. “The rolling fund is intended to foster mentored residents at other villages,” said Budiarta. Many customers ordered their VCO product. However, his institution is currently still waiting for registration number from the Health Agency and National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) in order that the products can be sold to modern stores. The weaknesses of his VCO are quickly perishable and not lasting long if the container is opened. According to Budiarta, it could have been addressed during the fermentation process where the water content has been completely nullified. So, the VCO yielded by mentored family can last for six years. Other than for drinking, VCO can also cure diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, refining facial skin and eliminating cellulite. Buleleng preserves women’s gong kebyar and Palawakya dance

SINGARAJA - Interests of teenagers in learning to dance Palawakya in Buleleng starts to decrease. It happens because the Palawakya dancers have not been regenerated as well. Palawakya dance was born and composed in Buleleng. One of the measures undertaken by the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Office is combining the women gamelan troupe with the performance of Palawakya dance in the Utsawa Medhangga Gong Kebyar Wanita 2016 on the stage of the ex-Buleleng Harbor. According to the Art Section Head of the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Office, Wayan Sujana, Palawakya is not easy to be danced as it requires a multi-talented artist and a strong desire to learn the dance. “The dancers should be graceful, good at playing gamelan and can chant hymns. The level of difficulty is quite high and only a few young generations are willing to learn the Palawakya dance. Thus, we preserve it together in the utsawa (festival) this time,” said Sujana, Tuesday (Nov. 22). Sujana added that a total of ten Palawakya dancers made performance in the festival after passing through a long enough process of learning to dance the Palawakya ahead of the competition. “Indeed, the results are not optimal. At least, there are people being able to dance and know, so that it is not totally extinct. The main mission of the preservation does not lose,” he said. Regional Secretary of Buleleng, Dewa Ketut Puspaka, hoped the gamelan festival could become a means of development and preservation of the dance as well as the gong kebyar in Buleleng. Amidst the onslaught of modern times, the gong kebyar can still exist and can be preserved. Models don exciting designs made of plants and flowers

COLOMBIA - An eco-friendly fashion show in Colombia has showcased designs made with organic elements such as plants, flowers, recycled and natural materials. The Biofashion Show 2016 was organised in Cali, Colombia, on November 19. Professional Colombian designers including Valentina Hoyos, Stevens Arboleda, Luis Garcia, Daniela Bedoya, Katherine Rodriguez, Tatiana Duque, Katherine Claros, Yohana Martinez and Nayibe Arenas, Sarah Bryon Abadia and Jazmin Restrepo participated in this fashion show. Authorities said that the bioFashion is a unique environmental initiative to create awareness about the preservation and management of natural resources. Online drug seller arrested

DENPASAR - Merchants of drugs and cosmetics via online are now becoming a trend, so that people must be careful because many of the products are illegal like what were revealed by a team of the Denpasar Criminal Investigation Unit IV, Monday (Nov. 21). The culprit with the initials AG was arrested when making transaction at Lumintang Field, West Denpasar. “The culprit sells herbal medicines and cosmetics of various kinds without a distribution license,” said Chief of the Denpasar Criminal Investigation Unit, Reinhard Habonaran Nainggolan, Wednesday (Nov. 23). Furthermore, the suspect was taken to his shop on Jalan Raya Denpasar-Singaraja, Bedugul, Candikuning village, Tabanan. When arriving at the location, police searched the store and

secured 16 boxes of sexual stimulation drugs, 74 boxes of black leech oil, 62 boxes of herbal soap, 45 bottles of Vimex, 6 boxes of Hammer of Thor, 4 boxes of Vimex cream, 13 boxes of KLG and 37 bottles of Vmenplus. In addition, police also seized 3 bottles of Viagra tablets, 4 boxes of Cialis, 2 boxes of Vigrit, 2 bottles of Semanax, 2 bottles of Kamagra and 2 boxes of Strong Man. “The culprit violated Article 197 of Health Law No. 36/2009. We are still developing the case while making coordination with relevant agencies,” he said. The suspect and the evidence were directly taken to Denpasar Police station. “We urge the community to beware of shopping via online. Fate of Mengwi Terminal increasingly unsure

MANGUPURA - The measure taken by the government of Badung to hand over the management of Mengwi terminal to central government did not reap sweet result. As information received by the Badung Transportation and Infocom Agency, the central government cancelled to take over the operations of the type-A terminal, including the Mengwi terminal. Fate of the terminal expected to break up congestion in town is increasingly unclear. Actually, based on the Circular of the Minister of Transportation No.132/2015 concerning the implementation of road transport passenger terminal, the Mengwi terminal will be taken over in December 2016. The handover will include personnel, finance, facilities and documents (P3D). Unfortunately, in the regional budget 2017 the government of Badung no longer allocates fund to operate the Mengwi terminal. On the other hand, the government of Badung has officially delivered the land of terminal and building assets, documents and a number of the employees. “Essentially, central government in 2017 will not allocate any budget for Mengwi terminal,” said the Head of the Badung Transportation and Infocom Agency, I Made Weda Darmajaya, Wednesday (Nov. 23). According to him, Ministry of Finance through the letter No.S745/PK/016 addressed to the Director General of the Regional Development, Ministry of Home Affairs, gives an instruction on the

delay to delivery of a number of regional affairs. It also mentioned that the matter of asset management, employees and documents will not be withdrawn by central government. Then, transfer status of the employees of regional government to central government is not necessary. “Since there is no transfer of local government employee, the local employee expenditure is still charged to the regional budget,” he said. A problem then arose because the government did not propose any budget for the operations of Mengwi terminal whose annual amount reaches IDR 2 billion. The government of Badung has handed over the affairs of the terminal, funding, facilities and documents (P3D) based on the Circular of the Minister of Transportation No.132/2015 on the management of terminal and the road passenger transportation. “We are still waiting for an official letter from the Ministry of Home Affairs. However, the budgetary proposal for the terminal has been already prepared,” he said. The government of Badung has delivered a total of 61 non-civil servants. They consist of 31 janitors, 24 security guards and two priests. In the meantime, the civil servants who previously served at Mengwi terminal will be withdrawn and placed at technical office in South Badung. “Pursuant to the instructions our leadership (regent—Ed), we are asked to wait for direction or an official letter from the Ministry of Home Affairs,” he concluded. DENPASAR - Trial of murder case against the traffic cop of Kuta Police, Wayan Sudarsa, with defendant David James Taylor was resumed on Wednesday (Nov. 23). Prosecutor A.A. Jayalantara originally presented five witnesses. However, only two of them could be presented. They were I Wayan Gunawan (customary security guard) and Samuel (motorcycle taxi driver) who often takes guests. Gunawan said that he had gone to the scene as receiving information that a person was lying down on the beach. He did not dare to approach before police arrived. After police got in, he dared to approach. At that time, said the witness, he saw injuries on the head of victim, while around the victim was found bottle shatters. In the trial chaired by the judge Dr. Yanto, the witness claimed not to know the victim, but once saw the victim in Kuta. He said that it is not common for traffic cop in the area of the beach because there have been monitoring officers such as task force. In the meantime, the witness Samuel admitted to be passing on

Jalan Pantai Kuta. He drove guests and saw a dreadlocked foreigner (David) holding the victim’s shirt collar. At that time, position of the victim was about to release the clench of the foreigner. The witness also heard a sound like a growl. “But, it was unclear because I was just passing,” he said. In addition, the witness also saw a woman (foreigner) at the scene. “There were three people. The dreadlocked foreigner held the collar, while the woman only stood not far from them,” he said. Samuel in the trial last Wednesday also claimed to closely know the victim. Moreover, he knows the name and nickname of the victim.

For four years of working as a motorcycle taxi driver, he always hangs out in the Kuta area. Besides, Samuel said that he frequently meets the victim. The judge asked why he did not stop or intervened when the victim’s collar was being held, whereas he already knew him well and was often assisted on the street?” Samuel reasoned that at that time he was taking guest, so that he considered it inconvenient to stop. GIANYAR - Unpredictable weather condition in recent days threatens the production of shallot and garlic. In Payangan subdistrict, shallot plants of farmers already started to show poor growth. This condition is also estimated to result in significant losses for shallot farmers. A local shallot farmer, I Wayan Sadiyasa, revealed that due to erratic weather condition the shallot planted about a month ago is now beginning to grow poorly, even potentially causes failure. “This condition occurs due to erratic rainfall, so the shallot crop cannot grow perfectly. Moreover, they look dwarf and their leaves turn yellow,” he said. He said if the season is good, the shallot bulbs have usually started to grow up. However, due to excessive rainwater, the planted seeds remain unable to grow well. “I planted 100 kg of shallot seeds with the cost of seed and labor reaching IDR 11 million. Unfortunately, I will suffer losses this time,” he complained. He added the shallot is cultivated in the paddy field to change his rice crops. This effort is meant to improve soil structure of the fields, so that when later on planted with rice can reap good results. “Actually, planting shallot in paddy fields is very profitable. Lufthansa pilots extend strike again until Friday for short-haul flights

BERLIN - Lufthansa pilots in Germany said they would extend strike action that began on Wednesday until Friday, ratcheting up pressure on management in a longrunning pay dispute and promising further disruptions for travellers. The walkout has already grounded 1,800 flights at one of Europe’s largest airlines, affecting more than 215,000 passengers. The Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) pilots’ union had planned a 24-hour walkout on Wednesday but late on Tuesday said it would be extended to Thursday after two courts rejected attempts byLufthansa to halt the industrial action. On Wednesday evening, the union said the walkouts would continue on Friday too, but only on short-haul flights. “Lufthansa management has shown no sign that it is willing to move and has not provided an offer that could serve as a basis for negotiations,” VC board member Joerg Handwerg said. Lufthansa, led by CEO Carsten Spohr, insists that despite a record profit in 2015, it has no choice but to cut costs to compete with leaner rivals such as Ryanair on short-haul routes and Emirates on long-haul flights. Shares in the company have lost 12 percent of their value this year, but were steady on Wednesday. Lufthansa cancelled 876 of roughly 3,000 flights scheduled by its group airlines for Wednesday, and scrapped 912 flights for Thursday, in what is the 14th strike in the dispute since early 2014.
