Madonna moves to Portugal, rated new star destination for expats

LISBON - New Lisbon resident Madonna has been extolling the delights of living in the Portuguese capital Lisbon, the most illustrious of a growing number of foreigners in the newly-fashionable city.

“I used to be a basket case but now I live in Lisbon,” she wrote on Instagram on Sunday under a photo of baskets hanging from the ceiling of an old Portuguese kitchen. Local media say she has bought a 7.5 million-euro ($9 million) estate in the mountains of Sintra, outside Lisbon, and will continue to stay at the Pestana Palace hotel, where she is in the royal suite, while it is refurbished. The 18th century Quinta do Relogio estate mentioned by various news outlets was still up for sale on the Engel&Volkers real estate agency’s website on Wednesday. If the reports are true, Madonna - who wrote that

“the energy of Portugal is so inspiring” - joins film stars Michael Fassbender and Monica Bellucci who have bought properties in Lisbon in the past year. Among the reasons the pop star has come to Lisbon is that her 11-year-old son David Banda has started soccer training at the youth academy of Benfica, according to the Lisbon club. She also arrives as Portugal has been named Europe’s best destination for expatriates to live in 2017 and the world’s best for quality of life, in a survey published by social network InterNations on Wednesday. In the overall global rating for best expatriate destination, it soared 23 positions from 2016 to No. 5, making it the leading gainer worldwide. Portugal, which boasts sandy beaches, golf courses, historic castles and some of the lowest prices in Western Europe, was hard-hit by an economic and debt crisis in 2010-13, but has been on a steady recovery since and is going through a tourism boom. LOS ANGELES - After welcoming twins earlier this year and mastering the art of changing diapers, George Clooney and wife, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney are not looking to expand their brood further. Clooney, 56, spoke candidly in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, published on Wednesday, about becoming “a very good diaper guy” and the pressures of being a first-time father to twins Alexander and Ella, born in June in London. When Amal Clooney was asked if she wanted to have more children, the reporter said, her response was a negative shake of the head. “I’m 39,” Amal Clooney said. “I already had them quite late.” The twins have been the subject of much speculation and the Clooneys, one of Hollywood’s most famous couples, kept a low profile

Spirited Syrians battling to achieve World Cup dream

Syria’s team spirit has kept the war-torn nation in contention to qualify for their first soccer World Cup and Ayman Hakeem’s side will need to muster more of the same attitude to deliver a storybook ending to their remarkable journey. For the fourth time in five games Syria scored in the dying seconds when they met Iran on Tuesday as Omar Al Soma slid the ball through the goalkeeper’s legs to earn a 2-2 draw that sets up a two-legged playoff with Australia next month. Since March, Qatar, China and Uzbekistan have all been on the receiving end of last-gasp goals from the Syrians as the country’s World Cup dream moved closer to reality. situation has also been reflected in the make-up of the squad as the qualifying campaign has evolved. Veteran forward Firas Al Khatib, who had refused to join up with the team due to his opposition to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, ended his boycott in March, leaving Al Soma as the last remaining highprofile stay away. His stance softened, however, and the Al Ahli striker - who has been top scorer in the Saudi league for each of the last three seasons relented in August, returning for the 3-1 win over Qatar last week. Al Soma’s influence was even more telling on Tuesday as it was from his free kick that Tamer Haj Mohamad eventually opened the scoring before Sardar Azmoun’s double put Iran in front, leaving Al Soma to become the hero in the

Hundreds of Gianyar residents choose to be migrant workers

GIANYAR —Tourism development in Gianyar district does not necessarily make the people of Gianyar feel homey to work at home. As evidence, their interest to work overseas as Indonesian migrant worker is still high. Based on the data summary on the placement report of migrant workers at the Gianyar Manpower Office in 2016, they amounted to 601 people. By sex, the migrant workers from Gianyar consist of 353 men and 248 women. By the subdistrict of origin, they mostly come from Ubud (220 people), Payangan (108 people), Gianyar (91 people), Blahbatuh (58 people), Sukawati (56 people), Tegallalang (36 people) and Tampaksiring (32 people). Chief of the Gianyar Manpower Integrated Service, AA Eka Dharma Kusumawati, acknowledged the high interest of Gianyar residents to work overseas. The workers of Gianyar overseas have been equipped with their respective competency. “The number of our migrant workers is quite high,” she said with permission of the Head of the Gianyar Manpower Gianyar, A.A. Dalem Jagatdhita. In the meantime, there are totally 33 destination countries of the migrant workers from Gianyar. The most favored destination countries are Italy (265 people), Turkey (172 people), the United States (17 people), the Maldives (16 people), India (12 people), Denmark and Dubai (11 people), Russia (10 people), Cyprus (9 people) and Malaysia (7 people) and a number of other destination countries. She added that to help job seekers, the Gianyar Manpower Agency helps with various breakthroughs such as by working with employers or job vacancies providers. “Gianyar Manpower Agency spreads vacancies to job seekers through Online and Facebook account of the agency,” she explained. Silkworm breeders overwhelmed to meet demands

MANGUPURA - Silkworm farmers are overwhelmed to serve the demand for silk threads. Moreover, the minimal silk raw materials makes the weavers choose Chinese-made silk threads. Cheap price and easily obtained become the reason. In Indonesia, the need for high silk thread reaches 900 tons or 7,200 tons per year. Bali alone needs 3-4 tons. However, until now the needs of silk yarn in Bali can only be fulfilled half of which reaching 1.2 tons - 1.5 tons. This was disclosed by Coordinator of Bali Nature Silk Farming, Tri Edy Mursabda, on Monday (Sep. 4). A cocoon spun will produce 1,200 meters of filament fiber used to make silk thread. “Indeed, the demand is high but we cannot meet demand entirely because of limited raw materials. We are shortage of raw materials,” he said. The shortage of silk yarn raw materials also causes the weavers to purchase Chinese silk thread. “Actually, if we see the land condition in Bali, many of which are unused. If we want to work on, we can realize silkworm cultivation as the mulberry tree can grow anywhere. It means it is not bound by the altitude and temperature except for the silkworms,” he explained. Silkworm cultivation can be carried out on the altitude of 400-800 above sea level, temperature of 24-28 degrees and humidity of 70-80. “The temperature is not too dry, not too wet, and must be cool,” he added. Such appropriate areas can be found in Bali such as Payangan (Gianyar), Petang (Badung), Marga and Baturiti (Tabanan) and Yangapi (Bangli). Limited raw materials happen due to silkworm breeding are still lacking. In Indonesia, the nurseries in Candiroto and Sopeng are still lacking because both centers for silkworm breeding (PPUS) belong to tidal area. “It means that sometimes the seeds of the eggs may be good and sometimes not good,” he said. The government has also opened up the opportunities for the region either province or district to make a silkworm egg nursery. This has been regulated by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in the procurement and distribution of silkworm eggs. It is meant to prevent the impact on silkworm cultivators or groups of silkworm breeders. “Therefore, it is permitted to make a silkworm egg nursery,” he affirmed. (kmb42)

MANGUPURA - The issues on price and food supply in Indonesia are remarkably complicated and have repeatedly occurred. For instance, the rice prices continue to experience fluctuations. According to Chairman of the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU), Muhammad Syarkawi Rauf, the problem faced by Indonesia happens due to long distribution chain. Certainly, there are parties in the middle or middleman that take advantage of the situation. “Indeed the middlemen have made the price relatively high,” he said when met amid ‘The 13th East Asia Top (EATOP) Level Official’s Meeting on Competition Policy’ in Nusa Dua, on Wednesday (Sep. 6). To overcome these problems, Syarkawi Rauf said that in Indonesia there are 2 ways that should be applied. For short term, it is done by determination of the highest retail price (HET), and the other is by structuring the rice market for the medium and long term. “We do not stop after setting the upper limit retail price, but have to develop rice market from upstream to downstream,” he concluded. Through this EATOP meeting, he hoped to gain knowledge and experience from the countries such as Japan, Korea and Australia. As is known, Japan does not have a relatively large area and a lot of resources, but can make a stable price and supply of food commodities. “We want to gain knowledge and experience from them. How they can do that, so that it will become very good. We hope it can be implemented in Indonesia,” he said.

He explained that Japan has an excellent market mechanism of food commodities, while Malaysia has a very good price control, like the highest retail price owned by Indonesia. Currently, he admitted that Indonesia is learning how to combine the experiences of Japan and Malaysia in encouraging the stabilization of food prices and supplies. Like the experience owned by Japan, he said the stability of prices and food commodities is influenced by their ability to control prices and supplies starting from the upstream. In the upstream, they have a very strong cooperative. He hoped that Indonesia must build a community-owned enterprise in the upstream area. After that, it needs to be integrated with large scale rice estate. From the integrated rice estate, it will go into the rice market and there should be auction process because the auction will be much bet-

ter for producers, retailers and end users. Or it could be implemented with a direct sale by integrating the rice estate to the end user. “If this mechanism can be pushed in Indonesia, it will certainly help Indonesia stabilize the price and supply of strategic food,” he explained. This EATOP meeting is followed by 10 ASEAN economies, other economies in East Asia such as Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mongolia, and Australia. One of the focuses of the EATOP is the enhancement of legal capacity and competition policy in the region as well as coordination of technical assistance between speech partners and beneficiaries for improvement on the effectiveness and efficiency of competition policy. Another look at waste: Belgian startup to print 3D recycled sunglasses BRUSSELS - A Belgium-based start-up is on its way to making the world a bit sunnier, by printing the first 3D sunglasses out of recycled plastic. The Antwerp-based company w.r.yuma - pronounced “We are Yuma” and named after one of the sunniest places on earth - began a month-long online crowd-sourcing campaign on Kickstarter on Wednesday. After two years of prototyping and testing different materials, it promises to transform old car dashboards, soda bottles, fridges and other plastic waste into different coloured shades. “It’s the icon of cool, really, and when you wear, literally you are looking to the world through a different set of lenses, and that’s exactly the message that I want to bring,” Founder Sebastiaan de Neubourg said of the company, named after Yuma, Arizona. “I want to inspire people to have, quite literally, another look at waste.” The plastic waste is sourced from the Netherlands and Belgium’s Flemish region. The waste is fed into the 3D printer, melted to form thin strands of plastic wire and layered together to construct the frames. These are then assembled by hand and fitted with Italian made Mazzuchelli lenses. Marketing schemes include setting up stands at music festivals to transform plastic drinking cups into sunglasses on the spot. The company is also making a limited number of soda white sunglasses made from 90 percent recycled PET plastic from soda bottles. It is also inviting would-be clients to return the glasses once they are done with them to be turned into a new pair of glasses. “The idea ... (is) also to make sure that the materials eventually come back to us in a closed loop system,” de Neubourg said. With five unique designs and three colours of lenses to choose from, de Neubourg is trying to make sustainable recycling fashionable and useful. The sunglasses will be shipped to customers in January 2018. “I think that sustainability should become mainstream,” said de Neubourg, a former mechanical engineer for a sustainability consultancy. “We’re not going to solve the plastic waste problem by just taking this plastic and putting it in sunglasses, but it’s a first step. ... Fashion giants LVMH and Kering ban size zero models

PARIS - French fashion companies Kering and LVMH will stop hiring excessively thin models worldwide under a new charter developed in response to continued criticism the industry encourages eating disorders. France banned ultra-thin models under a 2015 law though it only stipulated models needed a doctor’s note attesting to their health based on age, weight and body shape. Proposals to include a minimum body mass index were dropped after industry pressure. Kering and LVMH said their charter will now go further than the French legislation. All their fashion brands have committed to banning models below French size 34 for women and 44 for men. Size 32 in France corresponds to size 0 in the United States. “We hope to inspire the entire industry to follow suit, thus making a real difference in the working conditions of fashion models industry-wide,” Kering CEO Francois-Henri Pinault said in the statement. Fashion insiders have long said that clothes hang and drape better on tall, androgynous wom-

en, while Western cultures often associate thinness with wealth, youth and desirability. But criticism over how models are treated has prompted several countries to bring in protective measures. Besides France, Israel banned ultra-thin models in 2013 while countries such as Italy and Spain rely on voluntary codes of conduct. The two French companies, whose labels include Christian Dior, Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent and Gucci, said their charter would guarantee the “the wellbeing of models”. It also forbids the hiring of girls under 16 to pose as adult models. The brands committed to working solely with models who can provide a doctor’s certificate obtained less than six months before a shoot or fashion show attesting to their good health and to put a psychologist at their disposal during their work.

The new rules, which follow a wave of criticism of fashion companies this year, will come into effect ahead of Paris Fashion Week this month. In March, Kering’s Balenciaga fired two casting directors after they reportedly left over 150 models waiting for hours in a dark stairwell while they went for lunch. Also in March, France’s advertising watchdog asked Kering’s Yves Saint Laurent to modify two ads after complaints that they were degrading to women. One featured a reclining woman in a fur coat and fishnet tights with her legs spread wide and the other shows a model in a leotard and roller skate stilettos bending over a stool. Britain’s Advertising Standards Authority also banned an Yves Saint Laurent ad in 2015 that featured a very thin model whose ribcage was showing. (rtr)

Hotel and restaurant absorb 15 percent of Bali beef

Having potential, Tabanan tests paddy-fish intercropping TABANAN - Tabanan has a land area of approximately 21,000 hectares. Other than intended for rice crops and horticulture, the land can provide additional income if cultivated maximally. Tabanan district itself is currently encouraging farmers to use their land to build a fish nursery pond in addition to planting. As having the potential, the government of Tabanan district through the fisheries and maritime affairs conducted a deepwater fish pond trial and planned in 2018. In addition, Tabanan will also get assistance from central government to develop the program. Head of the Tabanan Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Agency, Made Subagia, said on Wednesday (Sep. 6) that some subak groups in Tabanan such as in Marga and Penebel have developed freshwater fish nursery. With the program of paddy fish pond intercropping, farmers will develop both fish fingerlings and fish for consumption. Subagia said that in developing the intercropping program in Tabanan he has made a visit to Sleman, Yogyakarta. There, farmers have already implemented this program and earn substantial profits. He explained the paddy-fish intercropping is that paddy field area intended for rice cultivation activities in combination with fish pond, while the comparison is that maximally 20 percent of the land for the pond with the depth of at least 80 centimeters. So, even though the rice plants no longer need water and the soil dries out, the deepened plot lines will still be filled with water so that fish can be developed. “Since the plot channel is deepened, though it contains water, it does not affect the crops,” said Subagia. After visiting Sleman, the maritime affairs and fisheries then conducted a pilot program in Kediri and East Selemadeg subdistrict. When director general of aquaculture, ministry of maritime affairs, made a visit some time ago, central government considered Tabanan to have the potential for the development of this program. “And then they exploded”: How Rohingya insurgents built support for assault YANGON - When the former U.N. chief Kofi Annan wrapped up his year-long probe into Myanmar’s troubled northwest on Aug. 24, he publicly warned that an excessive army response to violence would only make a simmering conflict between Rohingya insurgents and Myanmar security forces worse. Just three hours later, shortly after 8 p.m., Rohingya insurgent leader Ata Ullah sent a message to his supporters urging them to head to the foot of the remote Mayu mountain range with metal objects to use as weapons. A little after midnight, 600 km northwest of the country’s largest city Yangon, a rag-tag army of Rohingya militants, wielding knives, sticks, small weapons and crude bombs, attacked 30 police posts and an army base. “If 200 or 300 people come out, 50 will die. God willing, the remaining 150 can kill them with knives,” said Ata Ullah in a separate voice message to his supporters. It was circulated around the time of the offensive on mobile messaging apps and a recording was subsequently reviewed by Reuters. The assault by Ata Ullah’s group, the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), was its biggest yet. Last October, when the group first surfaced, it attacked just three police border posts using about 400 fighters, according to Myanmar government estimates. S.Korea deploys anti-missile system as US seeks tough N.Korea sanctions

SEOUL - South Korean protesters clashed with thousands of police over the deployment of a defence system aimed at countering North Korean missile attacks, while China and the United States discussed options to rein in Pyongyang. The United States wants the U.N. Security Council to impose an oil embargo on North Korea, ban its exports of textiles and the hiring of North Korean labourers abroad, and subject leader Kim Jong Un to an asset freeze and travel ban, according to a draft resolution seen by Reuters on Wednesday. Pressure from Washington has ratcheted up since North Korea conducted its sixth and largest nuclear test on Sunday. That test, along with a series of missile launches, showed Pyongyang was close to achieving its goal of developing a powerful nuclear weapon that could reach the United States. Amid the rising tensions, Seoul installed the four remaining launchers of the U.S. anti-missile Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system on a former golf course in the south early on Thursday. Two launchers had already been deployed. More than 30 people were wounded when around 8,000 South Korean police broke up a blockade of about 300 villagers and civic groups opposed to the THAAD system deployment, fire officials said. The decision to deploy the THAAD system has drawn strong objections from China, which believes its radar could be used to look deeply into its territory and will upset the regional security balance.

U.S. President Donald Trump has urged China, North Korea’s biggest ally and trading partner, to do more to rein in its neighbour which has pursued its missile and nuclear weapons programmes in defiance of U.N. sanctions and international condemnation. U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said he had an executive order ready for Trump to sign that would impose sanctions on any country that trades with Pyongyang if the United Nations does not put additional sanctions on North Korea. Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping committed on a phone call on Wednesday to “take further action with the goal of achieving the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula”, the White House said. “President Xi would like to do something. We’ll see whether or not he can do it. But we will not be putting up with what’s happening in North Korea,” Trump told reporters, although he offered no specifics. “I believe that President Xi agrees with me 100 percent,” he said. Asked whether he was considering a military response to North Korea, Trump said: “Certainly, that’s not our first choice, but we will see what happens.” Xi told the U.S. president during their 45-minute call that the North Korean issue must be resolved through “dialogue and consultation”. The United States had set aside for now plans to end a U.S. trade agreement with South Korea, a senior administration official said on Wednesday. BERLIN - Germany’s current account surplus is expected to remain the world’s largest this year despite an overall drop which is mainly due to higher costs for oil and natural gas imports, the Munich-based Ifo economic institute said on Thursday. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Commission have for years urged Berlin to lift domestic demand and imports as a way to reduce global economic imbalances and fuel global growth, including within the euro zone. U.S. President Donald Trump has also criticised Germany for doing too little to reduce its trade surplus with the United States, accusing Berlin of “very bad” trade policies. Chancellor Angela Merkel has pushed back, saying Berlin’s economic and fiscal policies have already turned private consumption and state spending into the main growth drivers of Europe’s biggest economy. Merkel also pointed out that the German surplus is mainly a result of the interplay of supply and demand

on global markets and that Berlin has only limited influence on other important factors such as the euro exchange rate and energy prices. Ifo said it estimated the German current account surplus -- which measures the flow of goods, services and investments -- to remain the world’s largest in 2017 at $285 billion, followed by China with roughly $190 billion and Japan with $170 billion. “Germany’s overall surplus is mainly caused by trade flows,” Ifo said in its analysis, adding that stronger demand from other euro zone countries, the rest of the EU and the United States had boosted exports in the first half of the year. The German current account surplus is expected to shrink to 7.9 percent of total output in 2017 from 8.3 percent in the previous year. “This is mainly due to energy prices,” Ifo said. Higher costs for oil and natural gas are pushing up German imports which has a dampening effect on the trade surplus. There is no day without a religious ceremony. It is the characteristic life on the Island of Bali or the Island of the Gods. One of them is the Usaba Muhu-Muhu at Timbrah customary village, Pertima, Karangasem. People at this village have a philosophy of high significance to maintain the integrity and harmony of their residents. It is reflected in the Usaba Muhu–Muhu ritual. This ceremony was held on Saturday (Jan. 9). It is implemented in the form of caru desa or animal sacrifice aiming to neutralize bhuta kala into bhuta hita. Thus, residents continue to live in harmony as well as the universe.

Implementation of this tradition is starting from nyaga ritual. Three days before the Usaba MuhuMuhu, residents carry out this ritual to neutralize bhuta kala in smaller scale, so as not to disturb other’s courtyard. This ritual is also called metuun buah. At the time of Usaba Muhu-Muhu, balancing ritual is performed in a higher level by the customary village with the caru sacrificing a cow. Undagi procession when slaughtering cow for the caru oblation always draws the attention of surrounding residents. The cow tied to a concrete pole is slaughtered by the undagi and this lasts tensely. It is thrashing about when slaughtered so that makes people tense. However, this procession is more secure

than a similar ritual at Asak village, where the cow is released and then bombarded with swords, machetes and other sharp weapons, when the Usaba Kaulu held at the village. Nengah Sukada, the local community leader, conveyed that the tradition is held once a year, precisely every new moon of the seventh month in Balinese calendar or around January. Residents of the supporting villages and two sesabu hamlets come down to carry out the task of devotional works at their respective hamlet to prepare ritual means. After the procession is over, people carry out prayers at the Dalem Tengah Temple. Ritual at this temple is officiated over by great-grandfather and dahyang. Great-grandparent officiates over the offerings in the kemulan shrine on the pedestal, while the dahyang officiates over the kemulan offerings under the pedestal. Interestingly, after saying prayers together, local residents ranging from parents to children join a shared meal or megibung, enjoying the beef as the remainder of the ritual means. Residents sit together in place that have been provided by customary village, such as meeting pavilion, long pavilion and gamelan troupe pavilion. Some other sources at the local village mention that the tradition of Usaba Muhu-Muhu is also considered as the implementation of the Shiva Purana, namely when Durgha goes up against the Mahisasura giant cow or buffalo. Indeed it is a simple cake, but when enjoyed together, it will be more palatable. Therefore, every activity like exercise to dance, play gamelan or chant psalmody at hamlet hall, this cake is ready to accompany. However, it will be nicer when enjoying this cake is accompanied with a cup of coffee. But children like it due it its sweetness. In this modern era marked with the presence of new pastries, the cassava ball began to disappear. If remaining available, it must be made by farmers at villages living away from a pastry shop. Currently children no longer know this cake, denoting a heritage of their ancestors. They just enjoy the instant and relatively modern cookies. Lately, this kind of cake begins to reappear. Traditional stalls in urban areas have sold it again. Its ingredient and shape may be the same, but the price is even more expensive. Aside from cassava, the other ingredients are young coconut, brown sugar, salt and cooking oil. At first, grate the entire coconut and cassava ingredient. Mix well the grated cassava, coconut and salt together. Slice thinly the brown sugar. Having finely and evenly prepared the batter, it is then shaped into a ping pong ball and filled in with brown sugar inside the ball. Fry until looking golden and brown. Catalonia parliament votes for Oct. 1 referendum on split from Spain MADRID - Catalonia’s parliament voted on Wednesday to hold an independence referendum on Oct. 1, setting up a clash with the Spanish government that has vowed to stop what it says would be an illegal vote. After 12 hours of often chaotic debate in the Barcelona parliament, a majority voted for the referendum and the legal framework to set up a new state, under which the assembly would declare independence within 48 hours of a “yes” vote. Hurricane Irma kills eight on Saint Martin as it pounds Caribbean

SAN JUAN - Hurricane Irma killed eight people on the Caribbean island of Saint Martin and also caused devastation on other islands on Thursday as one of the most powerful Atlantic storms in a century took aim at Florida. Television footage of the FrancoDutch island of Saint Martin showed a damaged marina with boats tossed into piles, submerged streets and flooded homes. Power was knocked out there and on Saint Barthelemy. “It is an enormous disaster, 95 percent of the island is destroyed, I am in shock,” Daniel Gibbs, chairman of a local council on Saint Martin, told Radio Caribbean International. French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said eight were killed and the toll was likely to rise in the coming hours. “We did not have the time yet to explore all the shores,” Collomb told Franceinfo radio, adding that 23 people were also injured. In all, at least 10 people were reported killed by Irma on four islands. The hurricane was on track to reach Florida on Saturday or Sunday, becoming the second major hurricane to hit the U.S. mainland in as many weeks. The core was expected to scrape the northern coast of the Dominican Republic and Haiti on Thursday and track near Turks and Caicos and southeastern Bahamas later. The island of Barbuda is a scene of “total carnage” and the tiny two-island nation will seek international assistance, said Gaston Browne, prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda. Browne told the BBC that about half of Barbuda’s population of some 1,800 were homeless while nine out of 10 buildings had suffered some damage and many were destroyed. “We flew into Barbuda only to see total carnage. It was easily one of the

most emotionally painful experiences that I have had,” Browne said in an interview on BBC Radio Four. “Approximately 50 percent of them (residents of Barbuda) are literally homeless at this time. They are bunking together, we are trying to get ... relief supplies to them first thing tomorrow morning,” he said, adding that it would take months or years to restore some level of normalcy to the island. Browne said one person was killed on Barbuda. A second storm-related fatality, that of a surfer, was reported on Barbados. At least half of Puerto Rico’s homes and businesses were without power, according to Twitter posts and a message posted by an island utility executive. The NHC said it was the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean and one of the five most forceful storms to hit the Atlantic basin in 82 years. While Irma’s intensity could fluctuate and its precise course remained uncertain, the storm was expected to remain at least a Category 4 before arriving in Florida. ‘THE BIG ONE’ Ed Rappaport, acting director of the Miami-based U.S. National Hurricane Center, interviewed on local station WFOR-TV, called Irma a “once-in-a-generation storm,” adding that for South Florida, “It’s the zig one for us.” Florida’s normally storm-jaded residents appeared to be taking the warnings seriously, too.

“A lot of times they end up having hurricane parties instead of evacuating,” Monroe county spokeswoman Cammy Clark told Reuters by phone. “That’s been the opposite this time around.” In Cuba, just 90 miles (145 km) south of the Keys, authorities posted a hurricane alert for the island’s central and eastern regions, as residents in Havana, the capital, were seen waiting line lines to stock up on foodstuffs, water and gasoline. The eye of Irma was passing just north of Puerto Rico late Wednesday, buffeting the U.S. island territory’s capital, San Juan, with heavy downpours and strong winds that scattered tree limbs across roadways. “The winds that we are experiencing right now are like nothing we have experienced before,” Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello told CNN. “We expect a lot of damage, perhaps not as much as was seen in Barbuda.” At least half of Puerto Rico’s homes and businesses lost electricity by nightfall, according to a Twitter message posted by an island utility executive. Aerial television footage of Barbuda, a tiny island just 250 miles (400 km) east of Puerto Rico, showed a desolate, flooded landscape shorn of trees and foliage, littered with debris and overturned vehicles. Among the higher-end property losses on the island was the Paradise Found Nobu Resort, partially owned by Hollywood screen star Robert De Niro, according to Stan Rosenfield, a spokesman for the actor. SUKAJAYA - Hatf Saiful Rasul was 11 years old when he told his father, a convicted Islamic militant, that he wanted to leave school and go to Syria to fight for Islamic State. The boy was visiting his father in a maximum security prison during a break from Ibnu Mas’ud, his Islamic boarding school, Syaiful Anam said in a 12,000 word essay on his son and religion that was published online. “At first, I did not respond and considered it just a child’s joke,” he wrote. “But it became different when Hatf stated his willingness over and over.” Hatf told his father some of his friends and teachers from Ibnu Mas’ud had gone to fight for Islamic State and “become martyrs there”, Anam wrote. Anam agreed to let him go, noting in his essay that the school was managed by “comrades who share our ideology”. Hatf travelled to Syria with a group of relatives in 2015, joining a group of French fighters. Reuters spoke to three Indonesian counter-terrorism officials who confirmed the boy went to Syria. Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country and most of its people practice a moderate form of Islam. But there has been a recent resurgence in militancy and authorities believe Islamic State has more than 1,200 followers in Indonesia while about 500 Indonesians have left to join the group in Syria.

Drawing on court documents, registration filings and interviews with counter-terrorism police and former militants, Reuters has found that Hatf was one of at least 12 people from Ibnu Mas’ud who went to the Middle East to fight for IS or attempted to go there between 2013 and 2016. Eight were teachers, four were students. At least another 18 people linked to the school have been convicted, or are now under arrest, for militant plots and attacks in Indonesia, include the three deadliest attacks in the country in the past 20 months, according to counter-terrorism police and trial documents of convicted militants. Jumadi, a spokesman for Ibnu Mas’ud, denied the school supported IS or any other militant Islamist group, or taught any extreme or ultra-violent interpretation of Islam. Ibnu Mas’ud is one of about 30,000 Islamic boarding schools, or pesantren, across Indonesia. Most educate students in Islam and other

subjects, but a handful are linked to extremism and act as centres for recruitment, Indonesian police and government officials say. “NOT OUR DOMAIN” Ibnu Mas’ud has been in existence for a decade, despite its links to militants. Irfan Idris, the head of deradicalisation at Indonesia’s national counter-terrorism agency, blamed weak laws and bureaucracy for the lack of action against such schools. “Basically, it’s not our domain, it’s the religious ministry,” he told Reuters. “We have informed the ministry that you have a problem with Ibnu Mas’ud.” Asked about the school’s links to militants and why it had not been shut down, Kamaruddin Amin, the director general of Islamic education at Indonesia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs, said: “Ibnu Mas’ud never registered as a pesantren.” Jumadi confirmed the school was not registered with the ministry. The local government, Amin added, “had requested an explanation regarding the status of their study but did not get a response.” Jumadi confirmed recent discussions with local government officials about the school’s teaching. “We have no curriculum,” he said, a reference to the emphasis on teaching the Koran. “We’re focused on the tahfiz, on memorising the Koran, and the Hadith (the sayings of the Prophet Mohammad),” he said. “We teach students about the Arabic language, about faith and the history of Islam.” Jumadi said Hatf studied at Ibnu Mas’ud but he did not know the circumstances of his leaving. He said he was unaware of any staff or students travelling to Syria to join IS, other than three teachers and one student detained in Singapore last year. Mustanah, a former student deported from Iraq in August, has told police several ex-students from Ibnu Mas’ud had travelled to Syria, two counter-terrorism officials told Reuters. Nestled in the foothills of Mount Salak, a dormant volcano, in the village of Sukajaya, 90 km (55 miles) south of Indonesia’s

capital Jakarta, Ibnu Mas’ud is a ramshackle complex of classrooms, dormitories and prayer rooms that hosts up to 200 students from elementary school to junior high. A Reuters team entered the school in June but was not allowed to tour the premises and was eventually asked to leave.

Inside a mosque that forms part of the complex, young boys dressed in Arabic tunics and skull caps could be seen sitting in a circle holding their Korans, smiling and fidgeting as they waited for their lessons. In a courtyard, young girls were scampering about. They looked no older than five or six and were wearing headscarves.(rtr)

Manusia Purba Museum of Gilimanuk houses a complete collection of early civilization in this island which provides useful information on the life and culture of ancient inhabitants of the last paradise; magnificent and important collections for a small and modest museum which is frequently unnoticed by the Balinese and the visitors. Federer’s U.S. Open quest ended by big-hearted Del Potro

NEW YORK - Roger Federer’s hopes of claiming a record-extending 20th grand slam title ended on Wednesday when he was beaten 7-5 3-6 7-6(8) 6-4 by Juan Martin del Potro in a thrilling U.S. Open quarter-final.

Del Potro, who swept aside Federer in the 2009 final at Flushing Meadows, now faces world number one Rafa Nadal, denying fans a potential first encounter between the Swiss maestro and Spaniard in New York. Federer had predicted that he would need to overcome Del Potro’s serve, forehand and fighting spirit to advance to the semi-finals. On Wednesday, he was dead right. Del Potro hit huge forehands, big serves and stayed focused when Federer seemed to be back in control in a one-sided second set. “I think I played my best match of the tournament, I did everything well,” said the 24th seeded Argentine. “I served so good, I hit my forehand as hard as I could and I think we played a great match and I think I deserved to win.” Del Potro enjoyed strong support from the sold-out 23,771 crowd on Arthur Ashe under the lights, with a spine-chilling roar welcoming his victory. “I think it’s my homecourt, too, you make me feel happy everytime I play here and I love your support guys. I love to see you cheer for me,” he told the crowd. “After all my injuries and surgeries ... New York is my favourite tournament, my favourite city to play tennis.” Federer had tried to stay away from Del Potro’s lethal forehand throughout the match, but with the Argentine’s first-serve percentage at 79 in the first set, he had no chance to break. With the Swiss struggling with his own serve, the lanky Argentine had one opportunity at 5-5 when the Swiss hit a double fault and then punished him with a splendid forehand passing shot. He sealed the opening set in the next game with another a big forehand winner.

The set went into a tiebreak and Federer moved 6-4 up to earn two set points but Del Potro saved them with a stunning service return on the baseline and a mighty serve. A Del Potro double fault gave the Swiss another chance but he made a mess of a backhand half volley and on the fourth set point, the Argentine stayed in contention thanks to a forehand winner. It was then the Argentine who had a set point on Federer’s

serve, did not flinch, returning brilliantly again to force the Swiss to hit a volley long. Del Potro then broke for 3-2 with a jaw-dropping crosscourt backhand winner. Federer was on the brink of defeat when he trailed 0-30 on his serve at 5-3 and while he regained his composure to win the game the momentum had shifted and Del Potro clinched the match with yet another forehand winner in the next game. WASTED OPPORTUNITIES

Federer, who has been hampered by back problems, barely sat during the period between sets, and he broke for 3-1 with a forehand passing shot as Del Potro started to struggle with his first serve and the Swiss effortlessly claimed the set. The momentum shifted again, however, and Federer dropped his serve in the second game of the third set when he served another double fault. He saved another break point in the fourth game, setting up one for himself in the seventh, which Del Potro gave away with a double fault.

MANCHESTER/PARIS France’s soccer league on Wednesday labelled the head of the Spanish league “undignified” after he accused Paris St Germain of “financial doping” and “peeing in the pool” over their purchase of Brazilian striker Neymar. Spanish football league (LFP) president Javier Tebas had already lambasted Qatar-owned PSG and UAE-owned Manchester City on Monday, accusing them of being funded by state aid and circumventing Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules. Each club spent more than 200 million pounds ($260.94 million) in the last transfer window. On Wednesday Tebas went one

step further. “We have caught PSG peeing in the bed or the pool. Neymar has climbed on to the diving board and peed into the pool. We cannot let them get away with this,” he said at the Soccerex conference in Manchester. “FFP doesn’t work until the damage is done. I told PSG that I will take them to court and they said: ‘I thought you were my friend.’ “According to their figures, Paris Saint-Germain have made more money from sponsorship than Manchester United. That is impossible. This is financial doping.” He also said PSG, who signed Neymar from Barcelona for a world-record 222-million-euro ($264.74-million) fee in August, were “laughing at

the system”. Silva in limbo as Leicester seek solution to transfer problem MANCHESTER - Leicester City’s attempt to sign Portugal midfielder Adrien Silva remains in limbo after his deadline-day move from Sporting Lisbon failed to go through in time. The 28-year-old was brought in by Leicester just before last week’s transfer deadline to replace midfielder Danny Drinkwater who had been sold to Chelsea. But media reports said the paperwork was filed to world governing body FIFA, who handle international transfers, moments after the deadline for registration closed. Asked to confirm if FIFA had rejected the paperwork sent by Leicester and refused to sanction the deal, a FIFA spokesperson said: “We can confirm that FIFA has been contacted by The Football Association in connection with the registration of the player Adrien Silva and the club FC Leicester City. “FIFA has replied accordingly providing reference to applicable regulations,” added the spokesperson. The FA did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the situation. A Leicester City spokesman told the BBC: “We are working with Adrien and Sporting to overcome some issues relating to the player’s registration and exploring all options to find a resolution.”(rtr)

FIFA orders S.Africa-Senegal qualifier to be replayed after ref banned

FIFA has ordered the World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Senegal, played in November 2016, to be replayed after the referee was banned for life. FIFA said in March that Ghanaian referee Joseph Lamptey had been banned for life after they found him guilty of unlawfully influencing a match result following South Africa’s 2-1 win over Senegal in African Group D. FIFA did not give further details but African soccer’s governing body (CAF) said at the time that Lamptey had wrongly awarded a penalty to the South Africans and suspended him for three months. The life ban for Lamptey was recently upheld by the Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). “The Bureau for the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers ordered a replay of the qualification match between South Africa and Senegal held on 12 November 2016,” FIFA said in

a statement on Wednesday. “The match will be replayed within the November 2017 international window, with the exact date to be confirmed in due course. “As stated in the FIFA World Cup regulations, this decision shall come into effect immediately but shall be subject to confirmation by the Organising Committee for FIFA Competitions at its next meeting, scheduled for 14 September,” added the FIFA statement. CAF had said that Lamptey was guilty of “poor performance” in the match and “awarded a wrong penalty for handball despite the fact that the ball never touched the hand of the player”. Thulani Hlatshwayo converted the penalty in the 42nd minute and Thulani Serero added another goal three minutes later.
