A dead body was found in the mangrove forest in Suwung southern Denpasar. The body which was found on Wednesday, October 21st 2009 had rot in several parts and the face can not be recognized anymore. The body was found approximately 150 meters from the highway, wearing black shirt and black pants. The evacuation of the body took two hours because the road

was muddy and slippery. Currently, the body is in Sanglah hospital for the autopsy. The information gathered in the scene, the first finder of the body was Abdul Salam, a security officer in Kimia Farma pharmacy. Abdul was walking on the area to find clams. Again, mice ran amuck at the rice granary of Tabanan. Now, it is the turn for agricultural field at East Selemadeg and Kerambitan. Due to this attack, local farmers failed to harvest their paddy. Information gathered at location mentioned that more than one thousand hectares of land at a number of subak territory faced harvest failure. It was estimated that they suffered from a loss worth IDR 16 billion. Mouse attacked a number of subaks in these two subdistricts. They were Subak Lanyah Delod Jalan, Subak Belumbang, Subak Sungsang, Aseman 6 and Timan Agung. Farmers at location said that the land planted with paddy and corn was begun to be attacked by mice since last August. “As consequence, only few crops could be saved, while the others totally failed,” said one of the farmers. The Head of Indonesia Association of Paddy and Crops Farmers (AP3I), Bali Chapter, I Ketut Arsana Yasa, familiarly greeted as Ketut Sadam, said that such fierce mouse attack truly harmed the farmers. He added that a number of subaks planting corn should have harvested at this moment. However, most of them failed. He himself planting corn at 2-hectare of land totally failed because stalks of corn were cut down. The loss experienced for 2 hectares of land amounted to some IDR 32 million. Normally, a hectare of land could produce 8 tons of corn. “However, we could not return the cost of production. A hectare of land needs a production cost of IDR 6 million. My corn has totally run out. Other farmers also found the same fate,” he said. If calculated, Sadam said the total loss of Subak Sungsang with the extent of 225 hectares and added with other subaks of some one thousand hectares was estimated to reach IDR 16 billion. timation, said Sadam, price of corn was IDR 2,100 per kilogram where one hectare could produce 8 tons of corn. By doing so, one hectare can produce some IDR 16 million. And, if one hectare normally produced some IDR 16 million, so one thousand hectares of land would suffer a loss of IDR 16 billion,” he explained. Minimal stock of mouse poison

He also admitted, the predator of mice has diminished radically in keeping with the damage on the ecosystem. Snake, mouseeating bird and other kinds of predators kept on hunting so the ecosystem was not harmonious. Deputy Regent of Klungkung, Tjok Gede Agung, was unable to hide his disappointment, last Tuesday (Oct 20). When committing instant inspection to a number of physical projects in 2009, no single contractor of the project could be encountered at location. As consequence, Tjok Agung was unable to get explanation in person regarding to the project development from contractors. A number of projects inspected, among others, were asphalting and drainage toward Watu Klotok Temple, establishment of Community Health Center II Dawan at Gunaksa Village, Sangkan Buana Bridge and some others. Ironically, other than being unable to find any contractor (project implementer), Tjok Agung also found some deviances in the projects. One of them was the talud project on road irrigation heading for Watuklotok. Based on information of a worker, depth of talud was 30 cm. However, based in his inspection, its depth was improper, Tjok Agung said. Similarly, the project of Community Health Center II of Dawan did so. Up to this moment, the project was estimated to have run for 60 percent, whereas the time limit of completion was at the beginning of this November. “I feel pessimis-

tic the project could be completed punctually. Originally, I would just like to remind the contractor. Unluckily, no single contractor was found at location. Actually, I am very disappointed to see such reality,” ended Tjok Agung who was accompanied by Inspectorate of Regency, Public Works Services, Head of subdistrict and so forth. In relation to such violations encountered, Tjok Agung confessed that he would send reprimand letter to each contractor. Additionally, he would remind the project consultant, both supervisor and implementer to intensify their supervision. “In years to come, we would not like to find any inconvenience on the project implementation. It can happen that the building has damaged in relatively short time after completion,” he said. Previously, Tjok Agung also encountered the reality that some projects were not worked on pursuant to constructional specifications. A number of projects in Banjarangkan subdistrict were inspected in the previous month. One of them was SDN 3 Banjarangkan. At the project was found the use of timber that did not meet the specification. Meanwhile, implementation of most physical project in Klungkung Regency in 2009 has been commenced in last August 2009. It was known based on laboratory examination toward saliva sample of dog biting one of the residents of Tianyar, Karangasem and Bangli. In fact, it was positive to rabies. The Head of Bali Office of Animal Husbandry Services, Ida Bagus Alit, revealed it last Tuesday (Oct 20). Alit added it was committed to prevent the wider transmission of rabies. Team of Animal Husbandry Services handled both regencies right away to make socialization. “We have gathered local residents to take preventive measures,” he said. The prevention endeavors, to name a few, consisted of the stoppage of interprovincial or inter-regency animal traffic, especially that of dog, in Bali. Secondly, it aimed at improving the awareness of community in order they were willing to bring their dog for vaccination, both at local village hall or local animal husbandry services. Bali Office of Animal Husbandry Services has distributed vaccination to all regencies/city.

Its details are 50,100 vaccines for Badung, Tabanan (38,000) and Tabanan (25,000). Then, Buleleng, Karangasem and Gianyar respectively obtained 10,000 vaccines, while for Bangli, Klungkung and Jemberana has been allocated 5,000 vaccines. In the meantime, stock at the province amounted to 81,000 vaccines. Alit added that the obstacle found today was the shortage of people’s awareness. They would only come when dog bit one of their family members. Even, some residents did not tie their dog and let it roam at large. On that account, Alit expected the participation of residents in preventing and managing the rabies case. “Local resident could also take part in eliminating wild dogs in their area because they themselves know exactly about the wild dogs at their residence,” he said. Car’s Tire Deflated

Again, foreign tourist from Japan became a victim of street crime in Denpasar City. The couple—Hitayama Taku (54) and Ani (40) was unlucky since they lost their cash amounting to more than one hundred million rupiahs. They underwent theft action at particular location on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Tuban, Kuta, Badung, last Tuesday (Oct 20). Modus operandi of the perpetrator in committing their wicked action was by deflating tire of vehicle. It was identified that two perpetrators could take away the cash of victim worth IDR 160 million. The case has been reported by victims to Kuta Sector Police to be followed up further. Information obtained by Bali Post the day before mentioned that such theft action took place at 1:30 p.m. Local time. The couple just took their money at moneychanger a certain location on Jalan Raya Kuta. Afterwards, they have lunch at Taipan restaurant. When they arrived at location, victim felt something wrong happening to his car. In fact, one of the tires of Daihatsu Gran Max with police number DK 1350 AV driven by victim got flat tire. Afterward, victim took left lane to stop his car, right in front of Bali Mutiara Shop. Unexpectedly, a motorbike then approached the victim. Instantly, the rider of motorbike grabbed victim’s

bag existing in the car. One of the perpetrators remained on the motorbike and started it when his friend could grab the victim’s bag. The incident was so quick. Even, the victim could not identify what kind of motorbike they rode, explained a witness at location of incident. When all valuables have been taken away, his wife got shock right away. Even, when he reported the case to Kuta Sector Police, her face remained to look pale and her husband calmed down once a while by embracing her. Before the incident, he was just coming from a moneychanger to take money and had lunch at Taipan restaurant, admitted Hitayama who spoke Bahasa Indonesia fluently. In the meantime, Unit Chief of Kuta Sector Police, I Made Karsa, when asked about his confirmation, he justified such theft action. Animal Husbandry Services of Denpasar Targeting Dog Vendors Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Following the issuance of Denpasar Mayor’ Regulation No. 25/ 2009 regarding to Rabies Prevention and Management in Denpasar, Denpasar Office of Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Maritime (Disnakanlut) commenced to take action as arranged in the regulation. “Other than performing socialization, orderliness making toward the existence of wild dogs keeps on running,” said the Head of Denpasar Disnakanlut, Dewa Made Ngurah, when met in Denpasar, last Tuesday (Oct 20). He said the targets in the rabies prevention, without exception, were dog vendors. Moreover, dog trade at Satria animal market was judged to have opportunity to transmit rabies. More seriously, dog vendors at the market did not complete their dog with good maintenance like administration of vaccination. In addition, the dog offered to buyers consisted of many kinds. “This market does not only of-

fer Kintamanian dog, but also that of outside Bali. Considering that dog trade has something to do with animal distribution, it needs taking action,” said the Head of Disnakanlut. Dewa Ngurah acknowledged, since the regulation of Denpasar Mayor was just issued few weeks before, his office would only take action by summoning to all animal vendors existing at Satria Market. “Dog owners at Satria Market will also be summoned. We’d like to give them explanation about the hazard and prevention of rabies,” he said. However, if dog vendors running their business improperly, or illegal, we would dismiss them entirely. The Mayor’s Regulation socialized after Kuningan obliged the community to keep their dogs in a cage. Even, they should be well treated and never let them roam at large. “Should there be any owners not complying with the regulation, we would certainly capture their wild dogs and eliminate them,” explained Dewa Ngurah. Raging of flames completely destroyed the stall and motor service belonging to a resident of Tangga Yuda, Kedewatan, Ubud, Gianyar, last Monday (Oct 19), at 11:30 p.m. Local Time. The building sizing 12 x 8 meter belonging to I Wayan Jejel (58), a local resident, was destroyed by the flames. The permanent building of stall and motor service established at roadside was daily used as business site. Raging of flames has destroyed the entire of building caused the contents like television set, refrigerator, cash and other

kinds of valuables to burn. Fortunately, two vehicles of Kijang type and Corona sedan as well as a motorbike could be saved. “Only spare parts were completely burnt,” explained the victim. VIENNA - Iran was set to hold a third day of talks Wednesday with world powers on a uranium enrichment agreement, a deal which could help defuse tensions over its controversial nuclear programme. The negotiations, on a proposal for Iran to ship its low-enriched uranium abroad for further processing, had appeared to stall on Tuesday but the parties met briefly and were due to hold further talks on Wednesday. “I think and I believe that we are making progress,” the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mohamed ElBaradei, said after the talks Tuesday. “It is maybe slower than I expected but we are moving forward and we are going to meet tomorrow at 10:00 am (0800 GMT).” “We still hope to be able to reach an agreement. It’s a complex

process,” ElBaradei told reporters. “There are technical aspects, many technical issues that we have to hammer out. It is of course a question of confidence building, of guarantees,” said the head of the UN’s atomic watchdog. The head of the Iranian delegation, Ali Asghar Soltanieh, described the talks as “constructive” and said that “discussions will continue tomorrow with all countries concerned.” The talks appeared to stall Tuesday over statements by Iranian officials that they no longer wanted France part of any deal, but diplomats said rather it was over differences on how to structure the deal. Iran tentatively agreed at a meeting in Geneva with world powers on October 1 to ship some of its stocks of low-enriched uranium abroad for processing into fuel for an internationally supervised research reactor in Tehran.

PARIS - French ex-prime minister Dominique de Villepin accused President Nicolas Sarkozy of hanging him on a “butcher’s hook” Tuesday after prosecutors called for an 18-month suspended sentence against him. “Nicolas Sarkozy had promised to hang me on a butcher’s hook (and) I see that the promise has been kept,” Villepin said bitterly after prosecutors asked for the sentence to be combined with a 45,000-euro (70,000-dollar) fine. The 55-year-old is charged with conspiring in 2004 to discredit Sarkozy and derail his presidential bid at a time when the two men were jostling to succeed president Jacques Chirac. KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia’s appeals court has struck out a bid by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to sue former premier Mahathir Mohamad for nearly 30 million dollars for calling him gay, lawyers said Wednesday. Anwar served as deputy premier to Mahathir until he was sacked in 1998 and jailed on sodomy and corruption charges. The sex conviction was later overturned and he was released after serving six years in jail. Anwar lodged the defamation case in 2006 after Mahathir said he could not have allowed his former

deputy to become prime minister because he was a homosexual, a comment the lawsuit said was “false and malicious”. The case, which was rejected by the High Court in 2007, was thrown out by the Appeals Court Tuesday on technical grounds after Mahathir’s lawyers complained the application was lodged in English, and not Bahasa Malaysia. Anwar’s counsel Sankara Nair said the case should not have been dismissed on the grounds of irregularities, which were common and should be easily overcome by the court. “It should go on the merits of the

matter. So that’s why we were most disappointed that the court decided to dismiss the matter on technicalities,” he told AFP. “We have a very strong case because Mahathir has to prove that Anwar is homosexual as he has claimed,” he said, adding the opposition leader would now decide whether to take the case to the nation’s top forum, the Federal Court. Since his release from jail, Anwar has reinvented himself as the leader of a resurgent opposition which gained unprecedented ground in elections last year, winning a third of parliamentary seats and control of five states.

LIMA - Thousands of pro- and anti-abortion demonstrators squared off outside Congress Tuesday, as a legislative committee revisited and confirmed its recent support of a bill allowing abortion in case of rape or fetal deformity. The panel voted October 7 to send the bill to Congress for debate, but strong opposition by the Roman Catholic Church and Defense Minister Rafael Rey, who says he will resign if the bill is approved, prompted a “technical” review of the measure. The bill would expand a 1924 law, which allows abortion only when the expectant mother’s health or life are in jeopardy, to include rape and fetal deformity. Spearheaded by Peruvian Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani, who calls the measure a “death penalty” for the

innocent, the church has openly lobbied lawmakers to drop the proposed legislation. LONDON - Indian men in Britain are more susceptible to alcohol-related problems than white British males, according to scientific study published Wednesday. The research found that deaths linked to alcohol were disproportionately high among Indian men here, and exploded the “myth” that Indian men did not drink much alcohol. “The evidence is showing that for every 100 white British males that are dying from alcohol-related disease in the UK there are 160 Indian men in the UK dying,” said the report’s author, Dr. Gurprit Pannu. “That’s a massive increase. And on top of that what we see now is an increased admission rate to hospital.” Scientists believe the reasons behind Indian men’s susceptibility to the effects of alcohol are biological and cultural. Dr. Pannu said: “They have a different pattern of drinking. Sikhs, for example, drink spirits more than lager.

“With spirits, the alcohol consumption is higher and you are not going to get a full stomach like you do with lager.” The report urges the British government to provide more “culturally specific” advice to help combat the problem. Dr. Pannu said it was a “myth” that Indian men were light drinkers. “Historically people think that people from the Indian sub-continent drink less than people here in the UK but the evidence put together showed that this just wasn’t true,” he said. The report, titled Alcohol Use In South Asians In The UK, was written for the British Medical Journal. It was conducted by Dr. Pannu, a consultant psychiatrist who works in Sussex, southeast England. His research was gathered at an international conference organised by the South Asian Health Foundation. Dr. Pannu said: “The conference brought together a number of international experts in this area and we collected their findings for the editorial.”

JAKARTA - Indonesia has arrested 10 Iranians, including eight women, for allegedly smuggling more than 10 million dollars of the drug methamphetamine into the country, an official said Wednesday. “The total value of the illegal drug amounts to 102.064 billion rupiah (10.81 million dollars),” Mawardi said. “They turned some of the methampetamine into liquid and put them into shampoo and soap bottles.” The alleged traffickers could face up to 10 years in jail, the customs office said in a statement. Sri Woro B. Harijono said in a press statement received by ANTARA here on Wednesday. “The reports are just a lie because they have no scientific basis,” she said. Up to now, scientists have yet to gain the capability of predicting a tectonic earthquake, she said. “If earthquakes could be predicted, we would have done so with those in Tasikmalaya and West Sumatra. But the fact is they could not,” Sri Woro said. The issue of a magnitude-8.5 earthquake hitting Jakarta on Saturday, October 24, 2009, was circulated by a short message service (SMS) and also appeared on the Internet. The BMKG chief urged the public to ignore the issue. “Such rumors were floated before but none of them proved true. Therefore, just ignore them,” he said. Recently, residents of Bengkulu became restless following a prediction by an Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) scientist that a magnitude-8.8 earthquake may hit their province in the near future.

TIMIKA - Police are still hunting the perpetrators of the shooting of a PT Freeport bus which happened at Mile 42 in Mimika District on Tuesday (Oct 20) and left two people injured, a spokesman said. Papua Police Chief Inspector General FX Bagus Ekodanto told reporters in Timika on Wednesday, a police team was still scouring the area to locate the gunmen and had until now not yet returned to their posts. “The team has not yet returned from the field. It is still looking for the perpetrators,” said Ekodanto. He said the search team was moving on difficult mountainous terrain covered in dense jungles and in unfavorable weather conditions marked by rain and fog. Ekodanto said police also had not yet been able to identify the shooters. Neither were police able to say how long it would take them to solve the series of shooting incidents that had happened in PT Freeport’s concession area since last July. “Its all depends on the evidence and witnesses because the shooters are always mobile,” he explained.

He said that over the last month the security situation in the Freeport area was actually began to be conducive. accepted as World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO (UNs). The writer, together with Dr. Alit (BPTP) and Prof. Parimarta (Faculty of Letters, Udayana University), works with Prof. Lansing. The task is performing a study at several areas of subak in Bali, especially at Subak Jatiluwih in Tabanan, proposed to become a part of World Cultural Heritage of UNESCO. Determination of an artifact to become a World Cultural Heritage (WCH) by UNESCO has nothing to do with financial benefit. Dr. Idanna Pocci and Prof. Lansing said that such stipulation tended to have more psychological and prestigious aspect provided by world community. Instead, such stipulation as WCH by UNESCO would give financial burden to local government paying more attention to that area so it remains everlasting and sustainable. UNESCO will not make decisions without obvious action plans of local government for the conservation of that asset. For instance, there is an issue mentioning that if the Subak Jatiluwih would be accepted as WCH, Governor of Bali would impose free property and land tax and cover the healthcare expenses of farmers engaged. Meanwhile, children of those farmers are allocated to get free tuition for their education. This policy poses a positive response in the framework of stipulating subak area as WCH. In short, farmers should get assurance that agricultural sector would be beneficial and they are glad to do farming. As a result, transfer of land function would be controllable or never occur. Theoretically, subak system (rice field and agriculture) should not be

viewed as a medium to produce foodstuff. However, the asset should have invisible function but has significant benefit. For instance, it generates view (nature’s panorama), produces oxygen, controls disease and accommodates excessive water during rainy season. Thus, it would prevent the flood attacking residents at the area. This matter becomes important consideration of UNESCO to make subak into WCH. The subak that has managed its rice field and irrigation system for over 1,000 years (existing up to now) indicates that subak indeed constitutes a part of human cultural heritage. On that account, it is important to be preserved. By endorsement of UNESCO, subak would have a high prestige and that is why it is worth protecting. Similar matter is now happening to batik cloth that has now been endowed with world endorsement. As soon as batik obtained an endorsement as WCH its prestige increases. As consequence, people feel proud and triggered to wear and protect the batik cloth. Dr. Idanna Pocci said that in Italy there was a housing complex with ancient architectural style that finally became a WCH. Therefore, the complex gets protection psychologically. “Otherwise, the complex may have become a complex of shopping mall,” he said. Similarly, it will transpire to subak system in Bali. Endorsement of the area as WCH would be able to increase its prestige and psychologically it would get protection from community and government. From the morning, Tukad Abu Beach selected as the start point was crowded by jukungs in various colors. Those jukungs were in a row at beach side being ready for the race. Meanwhile, local residents serving as supporter haven flocked the beach. Some were sitting on hills, on marine rocks while the rests climbed trees in order they could watch such traditional regatta in different view. The race inaugurated by Komang Gede, Assistant of Economic Development representing Karangasem Regent, was participated by 110 jukungs. Two persons,

WASHINGTON - The International Finance Corp., a wing of the World Bank, said Wednesday it would list its first Islamic bond in the Middle East. The IFC Hilal Sukuk, a greenback-denominated 100 million dollar issue with a five-year maturity, will be listed with the Nasdaq Dubai and Bahrain stock exchanges, the Washington-based corporation said. Sukuk is similar to a bond in Western finance but complies with Islamic Shariah law, which forbids charging interest. “The Sukuk is an innovative way for IFC to create opportunities for Islamic investors who want to make a positive social impact,” said IFC chief executive Lars Thunell. “It also supports the World Bank Group’s goals to integrate the Arab world into the global economy and offer greater opportunities for its people,” Thunell said. The IFC is the first non-Islamic financial institution to issue a Sukuk for term funding in the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, which comprises Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain. It is also the first Sukuk to be listed and cleared in the Gulf Cooperation Council market only, a statement from the corporation said. The IFC Sukuk, which has been rated Aaa by global credit rating agency Moody’s, could be listed on both the exchanges next week, a financial source told AFP. The bond issue will help develop the region’s nascent Sukuk market and encourage other sover-

eign and corporate issuers to engage with member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, the IFC said. The IFC Sukuk is aimed at supporting a pipeline of Islamic finance projects in key sectors such as health, education and infrastructure. A separate body will issue the IFC Sukuk and “warehouse” the underlying assets, the IFC said, adding that the syndicate includes HSBC Amanah, Dubai Islamic Bank, Kuwait Finance House Bahrain, and Liquidity Management House. “We are grateful to the Shariah scholars, our partners at the Dubai and Bahrain exchanges, and the syndicate for guiding us through this complex process, and hope that the model will facilitate the process for other issuers to enter the Sukuk market,” IFC Treasurer Nina Shapiro said. The Sukuk global asset class has a market value of over 200 billion dollars. IFC issued its first Islamic bond in 2004. That bond, denominated in the Malaysian Ringgit currency, was a 132 million dollars equivalent threeyear “bullet” bond. The IFC formed an Islamic finance working group last year to develop a more strategic approach to Islamic finance activities. The working group and expansion of IFC field offices in the Middle East and North Africa region have contributed to a committed portfolio of over 190 million dollars in loans and equity in the region, the IFC said. The global Islamic finance industry has grown rapidly to an almost one trillion dollar industry, reports have said. But it makes up less than one per cent of world capital, giving it a huge scope for growth.

In Asia trade, the euro bought 1.4923 dollars against 1.4937 dollars in New York. The dollar was trading at 90.74 yen in Tokyo by late morning, almost unchanged from levels seen late Tuesday in New York. LOS ANGELES – A pharmacist testified Tuesday that he warned Anna Nicole Smith’s psychiatrist against prescribing a powerful sleeping medication to the celebrity model after she had given birth to a daughter and endured the death of her son in 2006. “I said, ‘Unless you want your picture on the cover of the National Enquirer, I wouldn’t give her (chloral hydrate) because it’s a powerful respiratory depressant,’” pharmacist Steve Mazlin said he told Dr. Khristina Eroshevich. Mazlin said Eroshevich purchased chloral hydrate and also asked for a rapidly acting anti-anxiety medication, and he recommended lorazepam. An autopsy showed Smith died in February 2007 of an accidental overdose of chloral hydrate combined with other controlled substances. Eroshevich is charged along with Dr. Sandeep Kapoor and Howard K. Stern, Smith’s lawyer-boyfriend, with conspiring to provide controlled substances to Smith. All have pleaded not guilty. The testimony came at a preliminary hearing to determine if they should stand trial. Another pharmacist, Romeo V. Par, testified that Eroshevich came to his pharmacy in October, 2006 and obtained the drugs Xanax, Valium and klonopin for a patient named Charlene Underwood. Valium and klonopin also were implicated in Smith’s overdose death. The prosecution maintains

Underwood was a pseudonym used for Smith, and they called to the stand a woman by that name who once did business with Eroshevich. The judge, expressing impatience at the length of the hearing, hustled her on and off the stand and told prosecutors to begin moving their case along. A hospital psychiatrist who treated Smith for drug dependency concluded two days on the stand saying the former Playmate fit the legal definition of an addict. However, under questioning by a judge, Dr. Nathalie Maullin said she never used the words “addict” or “addiction” when discussing the celebrity model’s problems with her, Kapoor and Stern. Before leaving the stand, Maullin said she once asked Kapoor if he thought Smith was addicted. She said he chuckled and mentioned she had problems with alcohol. The charging document in the case states that Stern, Kapoor and Eroshevich “acted with knowledge that Anna Nicole Smith was an addict.” Prosecutors are trying to prove the defendants had that knowledge. Maullin, who treated Smith during a brief hospital stay when she was pregnant in April, 2006, was quizzed by Superior Court Judge Robert J. Perry on the addiction issue. “She was never trying to get high?” he asked. “I never thought she was trying to get high. I think she wanted to tune out,” the psychiatrist said. The preliminary hearing will be recessed Wednesday, a mandated state furlough day for the court system.

Lawyers for paramedic Tarino Lightbourne and former Sen. Pleasant Bridgewater, who have both pleaded not guilty, made the charge during their closing arguments. Prosecutors summed up their case Monday, and the nine-member jury is expected to start deliberations Wednesday. Lightbourne’s lawyer, Carlson Shurland, maintained the paramedic was “cornered” and called him a “victim” of entrapment by Travolta’s attorneys. Lightbourne is accused of threatening to sell stories to the media about the death of Travolta’s 16-year-old son, Jett, unless he was paid $25 million. Defense attorneys have sought to show that Travolta wanted to buy a document he signed releasing emergency responders from liability if the family refused an ambulance for the youth, who died Jan. 2 after suffering a seizure. Travolta testified during the trial that he signed the release form because he had hoped to fly his son to the U.S. for treatment. But police said the document never came into play because Jett was taken to a local hospital. Shurland did not deny that Lightbourne, who police secretly taped negotiating with Travolta attorney Michael McDermott, tried to sell the document. But he denied it was extortion, describing it as a straightforward business transaction. “Tarino had something to sell and everybody wanted to buy,” Shurland said. “If you had something to sell and they were willing to pay, you’d be a fool not to sell it. That’s what a free society is all about.” Bridgewater’s attorney, Murrio Ducille, urged jurors in the socially conservative archipelago to “set my people free.” He has sought to portray Travolta’s lawyer as a “devious and cunning” outsider who had “evil in his heart.” Bridgewater is accused of negotiating with Travolta’s attorneys for Lightbourne and was also secretly taped by police.

LOS ANGELES – Fossil bones housed at a Los Angeles museum belong to the smallest dinosaur discovered in North America, scientists said Tuesday. The newly identified creature weighed less than two pounds (900 grams) and stood about 4 inches (10 centimeters) tall. From head to tail, it measured a little over 2 feet (60 centimeters) long, said Luis Chiappe, director of the Dinosaur Institute of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County where the fossil bones are stored. The dinosaur “would have looked like a roadrunner on steroids,” Chiappe said. It likely ate plants and hunted bugs during the late Jurassic period, about 150 million years ago. It was so tiny and fast that it prob-

ably darted between the legs of larger dinosaurs, researchers said. Bones of four individuals — including skull, arm and leg fragments — were discovered three decades ago in Fruita in western Colorado and kept at the museum. Chiappe and an international team recently identified and named it Fruitadens haagarorum, which incorporates where the bones were found and the name of the president of the museum’s board of trustees, Paul Haaga. Developing nations join West in deforestation fight Agence France Presse

WASHINGTON – Six developing countries will join five western nations, including the United States and Britain, to combat climate change by better managing forestry resources, the World Bank has said. The Forest Investment Program (FIP) will meet for the first time on October 29 in Washington to kickstart the program and discuss the criteria for selecting countries or regions of the world that could benefit most from the effort. Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, India, Morocco, Nepal, and Romania will join donor nations Australia, Denmark, Norway, Britain and the United States, who have jointly pledged some 350 million dollars to fund the project. The FIP is among the first of a new generation of partnerships between developing and developed countries working to combat the threat of climate change through forest management, the World Bank said. “This new program will provide much-needed upfront investment to developing countries and forest-dependent communities to help them prepare for and benefit from financial flows for the sustainable management of forests,” said Eduardo Saboia, who represented Brazil in earlier meetings aimed at designing the FIP. Global deforestation, which is advancing at a rate of five percent per decade, is responsible for 20 percent of all the annual carbon dioxide emissions. The 20 percent figure is roughly equivalent to the total annual emissions of either the United States or China, and surpasses the total yearly

emissions from every car, truck, plane, ship and train on Earth, according to estimates provided by the United Nations. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva vowed on October 13 to engage with other leaders at the upcoming major climate summit in Copenhagen in the hope of reducing deforestation of the Amazon by 80 percent by 2020.

The Amazon, the planet’s largest rainforest, loses 12,000 square kilometers (4,600 square miles) each year to deforestation. Douglas Alexander, British Secretary of State for International Development, said Tuesday in a statement released by the World Bank that deforestation “is a global tragedy, destroying the homes and livelihoods of some of the world’s poorest people. “Rampant, large scale deforestation also produces more carbon emissions than all the world’s planes, ships and cars combined,” he noted, urging “decisive action” to counter the crisis.

Sperm donor passed on sudden death heart defect Associated Press Writer

CHICAGO – A sperm donor passed on a potentially deadly genetic heart condition to nine of his 24 children, including one who died at age 2 from heart failure, according to a medical journal report. Two children, both now teenagers, have developed symptoms and are at risk for sudden cardiac death, the report says. It’s the second documented instance of a genetic condition being inherited through sperm donation. The latest case highlights the importance of thoroughly screening sperm donors, according to the report and an editorial published with it in Wednesday’s Journal of

the American Medical Association. The San Francisco sperm bank involved now gives all donors electrocardiogram tests to weed out men with genetic heart problems; the study authors recommend that other sperm banks follow suit. Voluntary sperm bank guidelines say donors should be required to provide a complete medical history to rule out those with infectious diseases or a family history of inherited diseases. Many also do testing but for genetic diseases that are less common than the heart problem, according to co-author Dr. Barry Maron of the Minneapolis Heart Institute, a leading authority on the condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

thickens the heart and makes it harder to pump blood. It affects about one in 500 people; many more likely have the genetic defect without symptoms, said study co-author Heidi Rehm of Harvard Medical School. Symptoms can include an irregular heartbeat and shortness of breath but many cases go undetected until sudden death. The condition is often the culprit when young athletes collapse and die suddenly. Treatment includes medication and an implanted defibrillator to prevent sudden death. Neither the sperm bank nor the donors were identified. The donor, now 42, had no symptoms of genetic heart disease and no obvious family history when he donated sperm in the

early 1990s. His own condition wasn’t diagnosed until after a child born through sperm donation was diagnosed. Maron declined to provide more details on the donor’s health, citing privacy concerns. The children are now ages 7 to 16. Nine, including one born to the donor’s own wife, tested positive for the heart mutation. One born through sperm donation died; two others have developed symptoms, with one getting a defibrillator. The remaining children are at increased risk for problems, which often don’t show up until adolescence, Maron said. The only other documented case of a disease inherited through sperm donation involved a rare blood disease.

SYDNEY - Belgium’s seven-time Grand Slam winner Justine Henin on Wednesday confirmed she would make her comeback from a 15-month retirement at Australia’s Brisbane International in January. PHOENIX – Channing Frye scored 29 points, Amare Stoudemire had 26, and the fast-moving Phoenix Suns overcame the losses of Steve Nash and Grant Hill to beat the Sacramento Kings 143-127 on Tuesday night in their final home preseason game. Nash left in the second half with an injured right ankle and Hill was ejected after getting two technical fouls for arguing with the officials. The Suns, who broke open the game with a 42-point third quarter, hit a remarkable 51 of 56 free throws in the foulplagued game. MELBOURNE - Asia’s status as the world’s fastest growing economic region will boost Australia’s chances of winning the right to host the football World Cup, an official said Wednesday. Football Federation Australia chairman Frank Lowy, who wants the global sporting event held Down Under in 2018 or 2022, said more money would come to the sport from holding the contest in Asia-Pacific than from anywhere else. “We are able to show that bringing the game to Australia and having the Asian continent with us at the same time zone will benefit not only Australia, not only Asia, but the whole football world,” Lowy told a lunch in Melbourne. “Because the income that’s been projected for the television rights and other income will be larger than if they go anywhere else... Mourinho insists Group F wide open Agence France Presse

MILAN - Inter Milan boss Jose Mourinho claimed there are no favourites in his team’s Champions League group after a 2-2 home draw against Dynamo Kyiv left the Italian champions bottom of the pile. All four teams in Group F are separated by just a single point though with Barcelona, Rubin Kazan and Kyiv all on four points and Inter on three after three games. What also makes the group stand out is that it is the only one of the eight Champions League groups to include four teams who are champions of their country. “There’s no favourite. We have the chance to qualify. With three teams on four points and one on three, eight or nine points should be enough to qualify,” said Mourinho. “I didn’t expect us to have only three points after three games, of course I expected more but the difference between a draw and a win is minimal. “This group is very difficult but we already knew it would be. There’s four teams who are champions of their country and if you compare it with other groups it’s clear that other teams have been more fortunate whereas we four teams have been unlucky, but that’s the way it is and we’ll fight to the end.” The group picture could have looked very different if Barcelona had won at home to debutants Rubin but the Russian champions’ stunning 2-1 win at the Camp Nou has left everything in the balance. Mourinho was asked if it would have been better for Barca to win, allowing them to run away with the group while leaving Inter’s rivals for second place with fewer points. But the former Chelsea boss explained that if reigning champions Barca were to qualify in advance it would make their last game, away to

Dynamo, meaningless for them, making it easier for the Ukrainians to get a result. “The equality in this group is a positive thing. The Rubin result is good because it leaves everything open,” said Mourinho. “It means that when we get to the last match we won’t know who has qualified so when Barca play Dynamo at the end it will be a decisive game for them too. “Every match is one where every result is possible. We have three draws and of course this one is the worst because the first was against Barcelona and the second was away, but it’s difficult for everyone.” The draw means Inter have won only two of 11 Champions League games under Mourinho, continuing the club’s dismal trend in Europe’s premier competition despite their dominance at home. But the Portuguese said it was too early to suggest his team has a psychological block when playing in Europe. “Wait a little while, we’re only halfway through, there’s three more games and we’ll talk after them. I think my team will qualify,” he said. Kyiv twice took the lead through Taras Mikhalik and a Lucio own goal but Inter pegged them back through Dejan Stankovic and Walter Samuel. Even so, with two home games and only one away match left, Dynamo coach Valeri Gazzaev insisted they were in with a good chance of progressing. “It’s a good thing to be playing two more games at home. LONDON - Jenson Button believes his attempt to become the first British driver to retain the Formula One drivers’ world title will be one of the most difficult in the history of the sport. Button, 29, won his first title after finishing fifth in Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix to succeed 2008 world champion and compatriot Lewis Hamilton. However, Button has not won a race since June. His Brawn GP team only came into existence at the start of the season, rising from the ashes of Japanese manufacturer Honda’s withdrawal from the sport. But Brawn’s success in winning the constructors’ world title and that of Red Bull, another fledgling team, indicate the battle for top honours is spreading beyond the likes of established set-ups such as Ferrari and McLaren. “It’s getting more and more difficult,” Button told reporters here on Tuesday. “It’s a very competitive sport. “I’m sure it was in the 70s and 80s but now, for me, every single driver on the grid deserves to be there. They are very talented, they’re

not paying their way into the sport. “So to have the competitiveness between the drivers, but also the teams - it’s amazing how close it’s been this season. “One second has covered the front to the back of the grid, whereas 10, 15 years ago that was first to third on the grid. “It’s a lot closer and it’s made it a lot more difficult for everyone, as most sports have become a lot closer and a lot more competitive in recent years,” the Englishman added. “It’s going to be difficult but that’s every driver’s aim and that will be my aim next season.” Although Button has yet to sign a new contract with Brawn, he insisted he would not race for another team just because they offered him more money. “For me the most important thing in my career has always been

to be in a great car and this year is the first year I’ve really been in that position,” Button said. “I want to continue achieving in the sport. “I’m not one of these drivers who’s going to be looking for a new team who can pay me a big amount of money; that’s not what I’m about. “I want to go and win races again. “I want to be with Brawn, we just haven’t discussed it during the season, which is the right thing to do so we could just concentrate on getting the titles, the constructors’ and the drivers’, but now we can sit down and discuss it a bit more.” Button is the tenth Briton to be crowned world champion. None of his predecessors won back-to-back titles, although Jim Clark came close by triumphing in 1963 and 1965 with fellow Briton John Surtees, the only man to win world titles on both two wheels and four wheels, winning in 1964. Jackie Stewart, like Clark a Scot, remains Britain’s most successful Formula One driver in terms of world titles, with his three table-topping performances coming in 1969, 1971 and 1973.

Stoner victory ‘one of most important’ AUSTRALIA - Casey Stoner’s Australian Grand Prix victory was one of the most important in the history of Ducati, according to his team boss Livio Suppo. Stoner, who missed three races during the middle of the MotoGP season due to illness, won his home race for the third year in a row after an intense race-long fight with Valentino Rossi. Suppo believes that his victory, coupled with the second place he achieved on his return in Portugal two weeks earlier, was, in part, down to the support offered to the 2007 world champion by the Italian squad. “We’ve shown we are a company and a team able to react to difficulties, by staying united and by putting up with all kinds of criticism, even the unpleasant kind,” Suppo told Gazzetta dello Sport. “That’s why the Phillip Island victory is undoubtedly of particular significance: it’s one of the most important ever.” Suppo said that it was the right decision to rest Stoner for three races at Brno, Indianapolis and Misano, and replace him with rising star Mika Kallio, and believes he will be a stronger competitor next
