The film shooting was continued by taking the scene in Ubud market on Tuesday, October 20th 2009. The shooting was tightly guarded by the security officers. No one allowed to take pictures and recorded the situation on the set. The reporters and journalists also can not take a closer look on the shooting. Several sellers in the market took part in the shooting. They were very excited to meet and play in the same movie with Julia Roberts. In Indonesia, Julia Roberts is a famous Hollywood actress that played in several great movies. The sellers were having difficulties in the shooting because it was the first time for them to play in a movie. The scene must be taken several times and the director must give many directions again and again. The shooting in the market was the most tiring for Julia Roberts because it took long time. In the movie “Eat, Pray, Love” Julia is seen wondering around in the market and interact with the seller. JAKARTA - Liberal ex-general Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was sworn in as Indonesia’s president on Tuesday after winning a second fiveyear term with promises of economic growth and political reform. The softly-spoken leader swore on the Koran, Islam’s holy book, to uphold the constitution during a ceremony in the national assembly in Jakarta that was broadcast around the archipelago of 234 million people. “By Allah I swear I will adhere to the constitution as faithfully as possible, and will commit myself to the country and the people,” Yudhoyono said. A massive security blanket descended on the centre of the capi-
tal, with about 20,000 police backed by armoured vehicles on hand to secure the inauguration. The event was attended by the leaders of Australia, Brunei, East Timor, Malaysia and Singapore, as well as senior officials from around the world. Yudhoyono, 60, trounced former president Megawati Sukarnoputri in 2004 to become the mainly Muslim country’s first directly elected head of state since the fall of late military strongman Suharto in 1998. He did it again in July, easily defeating Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chief Megawati as well as his vice president, the Golkar Party’s Jusuf Kalla, to become the first Indonesian leader to be democratically re-elected. Bali News VAR Demand at Sanglah Hospital Increasing Denpasar (Bali Post)— It is scheduled that from Monday (Oct 19), continued vaccination for anti-rabies vaccination (VAR) was removed to Policlinic of Sanglah Hospital could not be realized. It aimed at diminishing the number of patients coming to Emergency Room so that it would not disturb the services at emergency room. In reality, myriad of patients even stood in line at Emergency Room of Sanglah Hospital. From the morning, both patients bitten by dog and those asking for continued vaccination flocked the information counter. As consequence, they should be willing to stand in line until outside information counter of Emergency Room. One of the patients, Wayan Suardika from Timpag, Tabanan, even admitted that he did not asked for VAR at Tabanan Hospital, but right away to Sanglah Hospital. Actually, Tabanan Hospital poses one of the rabies centers in Bali that also provides VAR. “Every time I asked for VAR in Tabanan, I was always referred or its VAR ran out. Therefore, for this third VAR I come right away to Sanglah Hospital and not to Tabanan Hospital,” said Suardika. On asking confirmation about that matter, Section Head of Outpatient Medical
Services of Sanglah Hospital, Ken Wirasandhi, explained that continued vaccination for VAR was indeed provided at Policlinic. However, due to some obstacles, chiefly related to billing system whose connection needed arranging, caused the services could not be provided at Policlinic. Registration service and VAR administration have run fluently. The problems lay on the connection of data of repeated patients to their billing system that was not arranged yet. “On that account, VAR services at Policlinic could not be undertaken today,” explained Ken on Monday (Oct 19). Still, based on information, continued vaccination services would be committed at Policlinic starting from Tuesday (Oct 20). As planned, vaccination would take place at one of the parts in Ratna Room. Though until Monday the VAR services was undertaken in Emergency Room, but for continued vaccination stayed to be served at working hours namely from 8 a.m. through 12 a.m. Local Time. Seventy-Three Rivers in Bali Run Dry Denpasar (Bali Post)—
The current dry season thoroughly makes condition of rivers in Bali run dry. Out of 165 existing rivers, 73 rivers of them have run dry. Meanwhile, other 92 rivers remain to have water but its debit tends to diminish and be polluted by waste. Most drying rivers are located in West Buleleng, East Buleleng, Kubu and Seraya. Originally, there was a plan to take advantage of discarded water from Unda River and estuarial dam II, but it needed expensive cost. On that account, it was then selected the closer rivers to Badung, Denpasar and Gianyar. For that purpose, it has now been established a rubber dam at Penet River (at border of Badung and Tabanan). It was scheduled to take the
water with debit some 300-500 liters per second for drinking water in Denpasar and South Badung. The taking of water at Penet River is taken at the lower course of subak point. In other words, the water is no more required for the interest of subak. Meanwhile, water shortage at eastern parts like Denpasar, Sanur until Nusa Dua and a part of Gianyar would be covered by a dam made at Petanu River, Gianyar in 2010. His party no more focused on PAD only, but should also notice the aesthetical aspect so the look of Denpasar could be tidier. “Re-arrangement on Jalan Teuku Umar poses a pilot project that would be resumed with other strategic areas,” said former Assistant II of Denpasar City Government. Concerning with the revenue of advertisement tax, Wisada said that up to that month it has exceeded the target stipulated namely IDR 6.8 billion. NDF to Release 1,500 Turtle Hatchlings Denpasar (Bali Post)—
A number of 1,500 turtle hatchlings were released at the area of Nusa Dua Beach in relation to the Nusa Dua Fiesta (NDF) 2009. Managing Director of Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC), I Made Mandra, led the release of the animal in person last Monday (Oct 19). Release of such turtle hatchlings was committed by components of tourism, such as hotel, marine environmentalists, primary school students existing in such international tourist resort and foreign tourists who happened to spend holiday in Bali. Deputy Head of Organizing Committee of NDF 2009, I Gusti Ketut Purnaya, said that the turtle hatchling release aimed at conserving the environment, especially marine environment. They should be preserved as their existence turned into extinction. “We have responsibility to preserve this animal because their existence near limit of extinction. As a nation having concern with the environment, it is the time to do something for the environment,” said Purnaya. As a tourist destination, Bali should maintain its environment. By doing so, both domestic and foreign tourists would be stay interested to visit Bali Island. Release of these turtle hatchlings truly related to the theme highlighted on NDF 2009, namely green tourism with subtheme cultural preservation and coastal area. “Impact of turtle hatchlings release as balancer

It was organized at Peninsula, Nusa Dua with participants consisting of SD 2 Muhammadiyah Denpasar, SD 3 Muhammadiyah, SD 2 Saraswati Denpasar, SD 3 Saraswati and SD Kuncup Mekar Denpasar. The Kids Drum Band once drew the attention of spectators filling in the stage of NDF. Organizer of this Kids Drum Band from Audi Event, Elisabeth Ivo, said that the activity was meant to develop the mental of young generation so they could behave disciplined and patriotic. Population of Kintamanian Dog Needs Protecting Kintamanian dog has been renowned to foreign countries. Wide spread of rabies in Bangli makes the breeding of Kintamanian dog threatened. Breeders felt worried if their dogs would be infected by rabies. What should they be committed to make Kintamanian dog becoming the mascot of Kintamani remain safe? SPREADS of rabies virus at Sembung Hamlet, Bebalang Village, Bangli shocked local residents. Being fear of rabies due to bite of mad dog, hunting team of wild dogs established by government kept on eliminating wild dog at a number of locations in Bangli, last Monday (Oct 19). To detect such dogs, it could no be performed by common people. It required a synergy of Health Services and Animal Husbandry Services so that the transmission of virus could be prevented. Regarding to land dispute, hundreds of resident of Lemukih Customary Village, Sawan subdistrict came to Headquarter of Buleleng Resort Police for the umpteenth time, last Monday (Oct 19). Their coming was to urge police department in order it could resolve the case regarding to police personnel reported to have pushed the customary apparatus of Lemukih during the tense when the officer of Land Registry Services (KP) of Buleleng would like to measure the land object put into disputes on last August 26. HANOI - After nearly a month at the Danish embassy, nine North Korean asylum-seekers flew out of Vietnam on Tuesday minutes before the South Korean president arrived for a state visit, sources said. “All of them left Vietnam already,” an airport official said, declining to be named. The group had spent almost four weeks living in a garage and an attached blue tent on the embassy compound. Thousands of other North Koreans have made similar journeys and been taken in by South Korea. The refugees flee the impoverished and isolated North on an “underground railroad” of illegal border crossings and safe houses that usually leads via China to Mongolia or Southeast Asia. A Vietnamese diplomatic source said the nine, most of them women, would fly out at 0630 GMT, just over 30 minutes before
South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak landed at the same airport. They were to stop in Singapore before continuing to Seoul, said the source who declined to be named. A Danish diplomat declined to comment when asked about the case. The South Korean foreign ministry and other agencies also declined, which is their usual position on North Korean refugees abroad. The nine entered the Danish compound on September 24 hoping to reach South Korea, Kim Sang-Hun, an activist who said his group helped them reach the embassy, told AFP earlier. They included a doctor and his wife, a mother and her 13-year-old daughter, and a woman who had worked as a “virtual slave” in a Chinese karaoke club, said the activist group. They were the latest in a series of North Korean escapees who have sought asylum at various Hanoi embassies in recent years.

News Rick downgraded to tropical storm off Mexico’s coast Agence France-Presse
MIAMI - Rick, a powerful weather system threatening Mexico’s west coast, has been downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm, the US National Hurricane Center said Tuesday. Rick has already caused one death and forced the evacuation of some of Los Cabos’ tourist beaches. But the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said early Tuesday morning that Mexico’s government had discontinued a hurricane watch and Rick had been downgraded to a tropical storm. On Monday, Mexican authorities said Mexican Miguel Barraza, 38, had been swept out to sea by huge waves caused by Rick. KATHMANDU - Every five years a temple in southern Nepal plays host to an extraordinary religious festival in which hundreds of thousands of animals are sacrificed to the Hindu goddess of power Gadhimai. For two days, the tiny village of Bariyapur near Nepal’s border with India flows with blood as thousands of Hindu devotees flock to the temple to take part in what organisers believe is the world’s biggest ritual slaughter. Many travel from neighbouring India for the festival, which has been running uninterrupted for around three centuries and is due to take place on November 24 and 25. But this year, a group of animal rights activists is campaigning to stop what it says is senseless cruelty to innocent creatures — pitting themselves against Hindu devotees in this deeply religious nation. “We launched our campaign to put a stop to the gruesome killing of animals in the name of God,” said Pramada Shah, director of campaign group Animal Nepal which has launched an online petition demanding the festival be cancelled. “Even in the 21st century, innocent animals are facing cruel treatment due to people’s superstition.” The campaign received a local boost when it won the support of Ram Bahadur Bomjam, a young Nepalese man believed by followers to be a reincarnation of Buddha after supporters said he could survive without water, food or sleep.
The movie shoot in Ubud market was handled by the head of Gianyar regency, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati alias Cok Ace. Agung Maharani, a seller took part in the shooting, said that she was very happy taking part in the movie. The shooting was not easy and tiring but she didn’t mind.
Bomjam, dubbed “Buddha Boy” by Nepalese media, has spent the past year meditating in the jungle near Bariyapur, but last week broke his silence to condemn the festival. “Human beings have turned brutal by offering animal sacrifices to the goddess. This practice must be stopped now,” he reportedly told local media. Bomjam’s supporters have organised their own campaign to put a stop to the festival, distributing pamphlets in the area and in Indian towns on the border urging people not to take part. One reason for the event’s huge popularity is its proximity to India, where some states have now banned sacrificial slaughter. “In India today there is greater awareness about animal sacrifice and suffering, so people and rights activists are against it,” said N.G. Jayasimha, campaign manager for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals in India. “Some states have banned animal slaughter even for religious purposes — including Karnataka, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. So all these factors contribute to the numbers going to Nepal.” But animal rights campaigners face an uphill struggle in Nepal, where Hindus make up 80 percent of the population and where ritual
sacrifice is a part of everyday life. Local authorities said they would increase security surrounding the festival, which begins with the sacrifice of two wild rats, a rooster, a pig, a goat and a lamb before the temple’s statue of Gadhimai. Devotees can then bring their animals into the temple for ritual purification before taking them into the grounds where they will have their throats slit. The meat is distributed and eaten. Nepal’s government has already pledged 4.5 million rupees (60,000 dollars) in funding for the festival and authorities say they have no power to stop it going ahead. The temple’s head priest, Mangal Chaudhary Tharu, told AFP 800,000 people attended the festival in 2004, when about 400,000 sacrifices were made, and he said he expected more people to come this year. “Nepal’s security situation has improved and we are expecting a larger turnout this year,” said Tharu, the fourth generation of his family to serve as a priest for the festival, whose origins have never been documented. “We are not forcing devotees to sacrifice animals. It is an age-old practice and it must continue. “The festival will lose its charm and become meaningless if we break with tradition.”

Palembang to cooperate with JICA in managing waste Antara
PALEMBANG - In a short time the Palembang city administration with the help from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will overcome any issues ranging from household garbage to landfills (TPA). The Assistant Economic Affairs and Development of Palembang city administration, Apriadi S Busri, in Palembang, Tuesday said that JICA has come to Palembang and expressed their willingness to assist the management of waste with the new system. Waste management starts from the household level by applying the “reduce, reuse, recycle” in which waste is processed starting from the house, then used as fertilizer to more high economic value
products, such as energy, he said. According to him, JICA has expressed their willingness to work together to help the management of waste from households to further processing. JICA has also been prepared to provide training for those who interested in a sewage treatment programs in the area, he added. He said that in the early stages JICA will establish cooperation agreements for a five years period related to waste processing in Palembang. Next the program will continue to be evaluated so that Palembang free from garbages, he said. He explained that in the early stages it will set up two locations used as landfill for waste pilot. But first they must make a visit to Japan and Surabaya, which has implemented the waste management system, he said.
A mine worker and a driver were wounded after the bus they were driving in was shot at around 9:30 am on the road to the Grasberg mine, Papua police spokesman Agus Rianto told AFP. “A convoy of buses carrying mine workers was shot by unknown people,” Rianto said. “A driver, Rudi Palanding, was shot in his finger and a passenger, Kristian, was shot in his right elbow and upper right hip. The police are chasing after (the shooters),” he added. The attack is the latest in a string of mysterious ambushes on the road linking the mine with the coastal city of Timika over the last three months.
Australian mine technician Drew Grant was killed in a July 11 attack, while a Freeport security guard and a policeman were killed the following day. The attacks were initially blamed by the military on rebels of the Free Papua Movement (OPM), but police have said there is no evidence that is the case. The Freeport mine sits on some of the world’s richest gold reserves and the U.S. company’s local subsidiary is the largest single taxpayer to the Indonesian government. Papua, a resource-rich region on the western end of New Guinea Island, has been the site of a low-level separatist insurgency since its incorporation into Indonesia in the 1960s.

JAKARTA - Director General of Fiscal Policy at the Finance Ministry Anggito Abimanyu said in Jakarta on Monday said that the deficit experienced by the United States reaching 1.417 trillion dollars did not affect the Indonesian government budget financing target. “The U.S. government has just announced a deficit in October this year, so I think it is safe,” he said after meeting executives at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs building. He added that although the conditions were safe, but there will be side effects of bonds, but the impact would not be too significant. “The number of Government Bonds, which we have issued are not as many as those of other countries because the ‘size’ of our bond market is still small so the impact of the ‘crowding’ is not too significant,” he said. For 2010, Anggito added that the impact of these conditions has been calculated as the economy has improved due to the possibility of domestic capabilities and the ability to affect market liquidity in bond absorption. “For 2010 is considered that if the economy recovers, things will depend on the ability of the country, the ability of the existing liquidity the market can absorb,” he said. The U.S. government closed the fiscal year 2009 with a record budget deficit of 1.417 trillion US dollars, approximately 962 billion US dollars higher than the previous year and 10 percent larger than the gross domestic product (GDP) which reached the highest since 1945. U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and White House budget chief Orszag Petrus in a joint statement said that the financial deficit in 2009 is largely a product of spending and tax policies which is inherited from the previous administrations. “And then exacerbated by the severe recession and financial crisis when the new administration started,” they said.

NUSA DUA – Two media of artificial reefs placed in the coastal area of Nusa Dua in the effort to preserve the sea live. Pariama Hutasoit, the head of coral reef restructure program in Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC), said “we already placed 14 artificial reefs in the coastal area to repair the damage reefs. We placed the artificial one on October 6th 2009.” There is great hope that by placing the artificial reefs, the complexity topography can increased rapidly. It also could become alternative diving and snorkeling area in order to relive the pressure on the original coral reefs. “The placement of fish aggregation device will attract various kinds of fish and it could increase the number of fish in the area. This is one of the efforts to preserve the environment especially the sea. The coral reefs are often being damaged by human act,” Pariama said. Made Mandra, the main Director of BTDC, said that all people should concern on the condition of the sea environment because the greatest treasure of Indonesia lies in the sea. “We hope that all of the people support the activity. Most of the tourists coming to Bali wanted to enjoy the beautiful view but if it destroyed so what can we offer to them,” he added. While the President of International

DENPASAR - An international scale film festival is held in Bali starting from October 20 until October 25, 2009. The Balinale International Film Festival (BIFF) for the first time was held in Bali on the year of 2007. According to Kelly Marciano, Creative Director of BIFF, this event was established in 2007 by Bali Film Center to provide an opportunity for international filmmakers to screen films to an Indonesian market while at the same time exposing the country’s unique culture, rich story ideas, and diverse locations to the international filmmaking community. The event provides Indonesian film professionals an international forum
where they can present their work while networking with visiting filmmakers. Marciano said this year’s festival will screen 25 international and Indonesian feature films, documenters, shorts, and children’s films. There are also Audience Choice Awards that will be presented for best overall film, best feature film, best documentary, and best short film. She explained filmmakers already long inspired by Bali. Filmmakers started coming to this island in the 1930’s producing a classic as “Goona Goona” and “Legong Dance of the Virgins”. ‘’In BIFF 2008, we presented the world premiere of “Chaplin in Bali”, rare film footage of Charlie Chaplin visiting Bali in 1932,” she stated. ”Ngelawang” festival holds in Denpasar Antara DENPASAR – The art of “Ngelawang” or traveling throughout the village is fading away especially in Denpasar. In order to bring the art back to live, Denpasar government will conducted the “ngelawang” procession on October 21st 2009. Ida Bagus Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra, the head of Denpasar regency, said “10 art groups or sekaa will take part in the ngelawang procession. The art that will be performed are bondres and barong.” The procession contains moral teaching, behavior, social ethic, and also as the promotion for rare religious arts. “There is great hope that by conducting the ngelawang procession, the people in Bali could become more creative especially in term of art,” he added. Rai Mantra hopes that the “ngelawang” tradition will have special place in the heart of Balinese. In order to prevent the extinction of the art, the government will carry out the tradition once again. The increasing number of traffic and development is affecting the “ngelawang” procession The art groups will spread in several points throughout the city.

TOKYO - Japan’s government is ready to add to the country’s already sky-high public debt in the face of slumping tax revenues, Finance Minister Hirohisa Fujii said Tuesday. Japan faces a “significant” budget deficit for the current fiscal year through March 2010, Fujii told a news conference, blaming the fallout from the global economic downturn. In such a situation, Tokyo “should not hesitate to issue new bonds” to cover the deficit, he added. Japan’s centre-left government, which took office last month, has made a number of ambitious fiscal pledges, including expanded childcare allowances and free high school tuition. It is freezing spending of about 2.93 trillion yen (32 billion dollars) from its predecessor’s extra budget of 14.7 trillion yen for this year as part of its war on waste in the public sector. But analysts say the government will need to borrow more

money if it is to meet its campaign goals, adding to Japan’s mountain of public debt — already the highest among major industrialised nations. In an interview with the Nikkei published Tuesday, Fujii said Japan’s new bond issuance may top 50 trillion yen (552 billion dollars) for the first time ever in the current fiscal year. Tax revenue may fall below 40 trillion yen for the first since fiscal 1985, he indicated. It would be the first time bond issuance has exceeded tax income since 1946, when Japan was rebuilding from the ashes of World War II, the Nikkei said.

Singapore tightens screws on international tax cheats: govt SINGAPORE - Singapore has passed a law aimed at tightening the screws on cross-border tax cheats and complying with stricter standards for world banking centres, the finance ministry said Tuesday. The move is the latest measure by Southeast Asia’s financial capital, which denies being a haven for tax evaders, to get itself off a “grey list” of countries that have not fully implemented the standards. A bill amending Singapore’s tax laws was passed by parliament Monday and the government expects to sign enough bilateral agreements to be upgraded to the “white list” of compliant countries by the end of the year, the ministry said. The standards refer to a set of principles drawn up by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) outlining how countries should address international tax evasion through information sharing. “The changes we are enacting are fully in keeping with Singapore’s status and reputation as a trusted and responsible business and financial hub committed to the international efforts to combat cross-border tax evasion,” Finance Minister Tharman
Shanmugaratnam told parliament Monday. He said the city-state had reached agreements with 20 jurisdictions to incorporate the OECD’s global standards, which were endorsed by a United Nations committee on tax cooperation last year. Singapore has formally signed Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreements (DTAs) with 11 of the 20 countries and territories and needs only to ink its 12th accord to get out of the OECD gray list, Shanmugaratnam said. “We are confident that we will formally conclude more than 12 agreements before the end of this year,” the finance minister said. Despite passing the amended law, Shanmugaratnam assured depositors that there will be no indiscriminate prying into taxpayers’ accounts. “Spurious or frivolous requests for information will not be acceded to. Further, it (the amended law) does not allow for ‘fishing expeditions,’” he said. This means that requests for information must be “specific, detailed and relevant to the tax affairs of a given taxpayer,” the minister added.
Euro chiefs express ‘worries’ over US, China export squeeze The men who run the euro single currency expressed “worries” on Monday about being squeezed out of competition for exports by two of their main global competitors, the United States and China.
AFTER weeks of a rising euro, while both the dollar and the yuan have fallen, a shadow has been cast over a tentative export-led European recovery since the summer — forcing euro policy leaders to adopt a dual strategy. Eurogroup chief Jean-Claude Juncker said he, European Central Bank boss Jean-Claude Trichet and EU economic and monetary affairs commissioner Joaquin Almunia would now turn their sights on Beijing before the year is out. “We spent quite a long time discussing exchange rates tonight, it’s a problem which has us worried,” Luxembourg Prime Minister Juncker told reporters after a meeting of finance ministers from the 16 countries that use the euro. In New York, the dollar again traded lower late Monday, the euro rising to 1.4958 dollars at 2100 GMT from 1.4903 dollars late in New York on Friday. The United States, meanwhile,
has itself attacked China for a “lack of flexibility” in its yuan currency, which has depreciated 6.9 percent against the dollar since February. Trichet said it was the trio’s “common position” that the “excessive volatility” of currency movements had clearly “negative implications for the economic and financial stability” of Europe’s economy as a whole. Despite repeated attempts at cajoling Washington into backing its ‘strong dollar’ mantra with concrete signs of rising value, analysts and traders have said the value of the euro could yet regain its all-time high of 1.60 dollars. Meantime, the falling yuan — not to mention the pound, with Britain the other major buyer of eurozone goods and services — further threatens European prospects at a time when leaders are still pumping billions of stimulus funding into their economies. “It is foreseen that the three of
us will travel to China before the end of this year and discuss the exchange rate policy,” said Juncker, without giving any detail as to what message they would carry. Experts have warned that the spluttering economic recovery in Europe is endangered by a dive in the value of the dollar which analysts say Washington covets in order to lower debts to China and boost exports. There is concern in Europe that Washington is seeking a short-term boost to its own exports and a longterm reduction in the value of government and private debts, much of which is held in China. The European Commission reckons that appreciation in euro value against the dollar of 10 percent in real terms would see exports fall by around 2.5 percent within two years. After US Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke reiterated the US public stance backing a strong dollar,

U2 concert to be streamed live on YouTube Irish rock megastars U2 announced Monday that their upcoming concert at the Pasadena Rose Bowl in California will be streamed live on YouTube. “The band has wanted to do something like this for a long time,” U2 manager Paul McGuinness said in a statement on the band’s website. “Fans often travel long distances to come to see U2 — this time U2 can go to them, globally,” he said. YouTube said Sunday’s concert will be streamed live on the U2 channel at the video-sharing site. It can be watched live in 16 countries: Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, France, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Korea, Spain and the United States. “YouTube is thrilled to be able to provide our global audience with a live streaming performance from one of the world’s greatest bands,” Chris Maxcy, director of YouTube partner development, said in a blog post. TOKYO - Japan’s Astro Boy and other comic heroes by late manga legend Osamu Tezuka will soon appear on iPhones and iPods in the United States, Japanese companies said Tuesday. The English-language “Weekly Astro Boy Magazine” will be available for iPhone and iPod touch users as early as this month in volumes of about 100 pages each, said Tezuka Productions Co. and D-Arc Inc. The first large-volume manga service for mobile devices entirely in English comes after the release this weekend of a modern 3D computer animation take on “Astro Boy” in the United States and China. First sketched by Tezuka in the 1950s, the “Astro Boy” series charmed children across the globe with its tale of a powerful little robot boy built by a scientist in the image of his deceased son. A number of versions of the story have been produced since, most famously the 1960s series which heralded the rise of the influential Japanese “anime” style of cartoons used in television and film. The first mobile-device trial volume is free, and the companies aim for one million downloads, said Yoshihide Kinokawa, a director at D-Arc, who was behind the development of the English-language cartoon delivery for iPhones. Each volume afterwards will sell at 99 US cents per weekly. Readers can see the whole page on the screen and zoom in for close-ups of individual cartoon cells. “I hope people who saw the movie will want to read the original,” Kinokawa said. WASHINGTON – European astronomers have found 32 new planets outside our solar system, adding evidence to the theory that the universe has many places where life could develop. Scientists using the European Southern Observatory telescope didn’t find any planets quite the size of Earth or any that seemed habitable or even unusual. But their announcement increased the number of planets discovered outside the solar system to more than 400. Six of the newly found planets are several times bigger than Earth, increasing the population of so-called super-Earths by more than 30 percent. Most planets discovered so far are far bigger, Jupiter-sized or even larger. Two of the newly discovered planets were as small as five times the size of Earth and one was up to five times larger than Jupiter. Astronomer Stephane Udry of the University of Geneva said the results support the theory that planet formation is common, especially around the most common types of stars. “I’m pretty confident that there are Earth-like planets everywhere,” Udry
said in a Web-based news briefing from a conference in Portugal. “Nature doesn’t like a vacuum. If there is space to put a planet there, there will be a planet there.” What astronomers said is especially exciting is that about 40 percent of sun-like stars have planets that are closer to being Earth-sized than the size of Jupiter. Jupiter’s mass is more than 300 times that of Earth’s. Depending on definitions of the size of super-Earths, the discovery suggests that planets that have a mass similar to Earth’s are “extraordinarily commonplace,” said Alan Boss, an astronomer at the Carnegie Institution of Washington. He was
not part of the European team. “The universe must indeed be crowded with habitable worlds.” Boss said finding 32 planets at once is a record “and it really shows that the Europeans have taken the lead” in finding planets outside the solar system. The discoveries were made by the High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher, which is an attachment to the European observatory telescope in Chile that looks for slight wobbles in a star’s movements. Those changes would be made by the tug of a planet’s gravity on the star. There are no photos of these planets.

Mercury Levels Not Abnormal in Autistic Children A new study finds no differences in blood mercury levels between children who are developing normally and those diagnosed with autism or autism spectrum disorders. The findings, appearing online Oct. 19 in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, may quell some of the debate surrounding mercury and autism. The researchers did not, for instance, look at whether mercury might play a causal role in this group of developmental disorders. “This is an excellent study that has addressed a very important question for many families about the role of mercury [in autism],” said Dr. Patricia ManningCourtney, medical director of The Kelly O’Leary Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. “It’s a very clear study [in] that no differences in mercury were seen. Is it going to put the questions to rest? I think no. It’s another important contribution to the large body of knowledge on this topic, but I think it will still be an area of great controversy.” Previous studies have shown higher blood mercury levels in people with autism, but the results, along with the quality of the studies, have been inconsistent. One of the biggest controversies claims that vaccines containing the preservative thimerosal, which contains mercury, might cause autism. But thimerosal is no longer used routinely in children’s vaccines and, earlier this year, a U.S. court ruled that there is no scientific evidence that childhood vaccines such as the measles-mumpsrubella vaccine caused autism in children of parents seeking compensation from a federal fund. The authors of this study wanted to fill one gap in the research: a lack of good evidence comparing mercury levels in children with autism and children without autism. The authors looked at 452 children aged 2 to 5,
who either had autism/autism spectrum disorder, developmental delays other than autism (such as Down syndrome), or who were developing normally. Blood samples were taken from the children while mothers answered questions about different possible exposures to mercury, such as diet, dental amalgams, thimerosal-containing vaccines and even personalcare products such as earwax removal systems and nasal sprays. First results showed that children with autism actually had much lower levels of mercury in their blood, but this was explained by the fact that these children ate less fish. When the results were adjusted for this and other variables, mercury levels came out about the same between the autism group and the control group. “Not only do we not see differences, but the values are pretty close to national averages,” said study author Irva Hertz-Picciotto, chief of environmental and occupational health and a faculty member at the MIND Institute at the University of California, Davis. Overall, children with developmental delays other than autism had lower blood mercury concentrations. Children who had mercurybased dental fillings who ground their teeth or chewed gum had blood concentrations of the metal. And those few children who had had a mercury-containing vaccine did not show elevations in their blood levels. “The relationship between [mercury] intake to blood levels seems to follow the pattern that we expect and it’s well known that most of the mercury in the body does come from fish consumption,” Hertz-Picciotto said. “There really were very few children who had vaccines that would have or could have contained thimerosal.” Most of the children in the study had received vaccines after thimerosal was removed from vaccines, she said.

KEY LARGO, Fla. – The Overseas Highway, which stretches over 127 miles in the Florida Keys, has been named an All-American Road. Completed in 1938, the Overseas Highway incorporates 42 bridges over the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The All-American Road designation is the highest recognition possible under the National Scenic Byways program. Only 30 other U.S. roadways have earned the prestigious title. Keys officials expect the accolade will lead to increased tourism and additional highway funding. “The All-American Road designation will bring status to us with international
and domestic visitors, so that they know driving U.S. 1 from Key Largo to Key West is a one-of-a-kind driving experience,” said Judy Hull, president of the Florida Keys Scenic Corridor Alliance, which spearheaded a multiyear effort to achieve the distinction. “It should help us with tourism and future highway grant funding.” The Overseas Highway follows a trail originally blazed in 1912 when Standard Oil millionaire Henry Flagler completed the extension of his Florida East Coast Railroad from Miami to Key West. Construction of the highway began after the railroad ceased operating following a 1935 hurricane. In 1982, 37 of the original bridges including the Seven Mile Bridge were replaced
with wider spans. Most of the historic bridges still stand alongside the newer ones and now serve as fishing piers for anglers. Along with the Overseas Highway, officials announced four other All-American Roads. STOCKHOLM - Roland Garros finalist Robin Soderling will have to wait until Wednesday to start this week’s campaign for a place in the ATP year-end event, with a match against qualifying lucky loser Giovanni Lapentti his first task at the Stockholm Open. Lapentti, 224th-ranked younger brother of Ecuadornian pro Nicolas Lapentti, will be playing at the ATP level for only the second time this season. After flying into the Swedish capital from the Shanghai Masters at the weekend, Soderling, provisional number nine in the eightman chase for the World Tour Finals starting on November 22 has been re-acquainting himself with the temple of Swedish tennis, the Kungligahallen. Soderling has established himself as a top player since his French Open breakthrough, where he beat Rafael Nadal in the fourthround to end his four year reign, then lost the final to Roger Federer. LONDON - Nikolay Valuev is used to the looks and sniggers that his huge size has attracted over the years, but the comments from his latest challenger have been particularly caustic. David Haye, Britain’s former undisputed world cruiserweight champion, has declared he is only just getting warmed up after calling Valuev “a circus freak” ahead of their fight in Nuremberg on November 7 for Valuev’s WBA heavyweight title. At 7ft 2inches tall and 23 stone, Valuev is the biggest world heavyweight champion in history and will tower over his opponent when he gets into the ring to face Haye, who is 6ft 2in and does not expect to be over 16 stones for the fight. Haye’s trash talk might be particularly dirty, but it does not seem to be unsettling the Russian champion. Valuev has heard all the insults before after being compared to Shrek and billed earlier in his career as ‘The Beast from the East’. “I am not a circus show,” said Valuev. “I am a normal human being. People sometimes do not treat me like a human being because of my size and make me a sensation. I try to not take it personally because they do not know me as a person. My name is Nikolay Valuev, not something else.” But Valuev’s Germany-based promoter Kalle Sauerland believes Haye’s comments have riled the champion. “Niko has laughed at what Haye has been saying but he didn’t like the image of Haye punching his head off a cardboard cut out of himself,” Sauerland told AFP. “He promised me that he’s going to knock Haye out, which he doesn’t normally say about opponents. MOSCOW - Home favourite and third-seed Mikhail Youzhny cruised into the ATP Kremlin Cup second round with a straight-set win over Horacio Zeballos of Argentina here on Monday. The 27-year-old Russian, 30th in the ATP rankings, came through his first ever meeting with Zeballos 6-1, 7-6 (7/5). Youzhny started confidently producing three breaks in the opening set which he took in 26 minutes. In the second set Zeballos, ranked 54th in the world, broke early to clinch a 3-1 lead but Youzhny broke back in the sixth to level at 33. In the tiebreak Youzhny’s greater accuracy prevailed as he won the set and the match in one hour 26 minutes. “In the first set I was confident and fresh, while he (Zeballos) made too many mistakes,” Youzhny said. “I took seven consecutive games but then lost my concentration for a while and lost a serve, while he was serving and returning much better. Emotional Milan reunion for Real new boy Kaka Agence France - Presse
MADRID - Real Madrid’s Brazilian superstar Kaka faces old club AC Milan for the first time on Wednesday when the two sides do battle at the Santiago Bernabeu in the Champions League Group C match. Kaka was an icon at Milan after six successful years helping the club win the 2007 Champions League crown but left for Real this summer in a 65 million-euro move which he insisted was to help Milan with their financial problems. The Spanish capital hosts a matchup between the two most successful clubs in European history with Real boasting a record nine European Cups to Milan’s seven. Both sides can point to illustrious histories but at present they are looking to restore their reputations as European superpowers with Real failing to get past the quarter-finals of the competition since 2004 which was the year Milan last won their domestic title. Milan are under pressure in the group after a shock 1-0 home loss to unfancied FC Zurich while Real are perched comfortably at the top with a maximum six points. “It is time to see Real Madrid’s true colours against an opponent that has won a lot of European Cups and who we really respect,” said Real defender Sergio Ramos. Kaka, who has said he will not celebrate if he scores, will undoubtedly take centre stage against his old club particuarly as Real’s other world superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, is still out with an ankle injury. It will also be a special occasion for 33-year-old Milan
midfielder Clarence Seedorf who won the Champions League in Real colours back in 1998. “Real Madrid? No-one scares me, there’s no time to be scared,” said Dutchman Seedorf. A return to the Bernabeu will also be memorable for Brazilian Ronaldinho who tormented Real in his Barcelona days and famously received a standing ovation from the Bernabeu crowd in the 2005/ 06 season after scoring a great solo goal for Barca in a 3-0 win in ‘El Clasico’. Dutch forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar didn’t get many standing ovations in his brief seven months at Real before being let go to Milan and will have a point to prove if given the chance. Milan may be a shadow of the great side from the 1990s but have outperformed Real in Europe over the last five seasons reaching the final twice, losing the first against Liverpool in 2005 and then defeating the same opposition in 2007. Real have not reached the final since 2002 but hope that changes this season especially with the showpiece final at their stadium.

LONDON - Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti will be praying for another dose of Champions League magic from Nicolas Anelka as the Blues bid to erase the memory of their recent domestic difficulties. Ancelotti’s side reeled off eight successive wins at the start of the season to widespread acclaim, but the wheels have come off Chelsea’s bandwagon after defeats at Wigan and Aston Villa. The west London club’s 2-1 loss at Villa on Saturday wasn’t as shocking as the Wigan embarrassment, but it cost Chelsea their place on top of the Premier League and raised questions about Ancelotti’s defence, whose shoddy marking was exposed at two
set-pieces. Suddenly Chelsea don’t look quite so all-conquering, but they have a chance to get back on track in Wednesday’s European clash against Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge. ROME - Juventus will not be underestimating group minnows Maccabi Haifa when the Israelis come to Turin in the Champions League on Wednesday. Maccabi sit bottom of Group A after two defeats to Bayern Munich and Bordeaux while Juve are only one place and two points above them after having drawn against the same two teams. But despite Haifa’s limited European pedigree, Juve centre-back Giorgio Chiellini insisted his team will treat their opponents like the greats of European football. Last year Juve beat Real Madrid home and away in the group stages before they fell to Chelsea in the first knock-out round. “On Wednesday we have to play with the same intensity we showed a year ago against Real,” said Chiellini. “In this match and in the next one in Tel Aviv (Haifa’s ground does not meet UEFA standards so they play Champions League matches in Tel Aviv’s national stadium) are matches we have to win at any cost so we can make it to the last two group games in the best possible health. “We don’t know much about Maccabi, personally I know the striker (Vladimir) Dvalishvili because I came up against him for the national team against Georgia last month. They’re a team that must be respected for what they did against Bayern Munich and
Bordeaux when they were only beaten at the end of the games.” Juve’s overriding problem on Wednesday might not be Maccabi but themselves. After a great start to the season in which they won their first four Serie A matches, including successive away wins at AS Roma and Lazio, they have not won in five matches (four in Serie A and one in the Champions League). In fact they have only one win in seven matches in all competitions and that came at home to rock-bottom Livorno and thanks to a man-of-thematch performance from goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. That is hardly the form of potential champions, either of Italy or of Europe. However, it is a remarkably similar situation to that faced by Juve a year ago when Real were the visitors to Turin at the same stage of the competition. Back then, as now, they had not won in five matches only their situation was worse as they had lost two of those five — instead of just one this time — and were struggling in the league with only nine points and two wins from seven games. This time they are third in the table and only four points behind leaders and champions Inter Milan. “Then we were also in a delicate period. In the league things were going worse because we had already lost twice and we were lower in the table,” added Chiellini.

Lorenzo: Title was a long shot anyway JORGE LORENZO said he was angry with himself for crashing in Australia, but was not downcast about the points lost as he knew the title was already unlikely. The Spaniard’s first lap error at Phillip Island and title rival Valentino Rossi’s second place has given Rossi a commanding 38 point advantage in the championship with only two races to go, giving him an excellent chance of clinching his seventh MotoGP crown at Sepang next weekend. Lorenzo crashed heavily in Australia after tapping the back of Nicky Hayden’s Ducati as they braked for the first corner. “I’m a little bit sad for this crash, not for the championship but for my mistake,” said Lorenzo. “I didn’t expect this kind of mistake from myself. It was totally my fault, I miscalculated the distance off the line and Nicky braked earlier than I was expecting and I hit him. I thought I could save it but my front brake was broken and so when I tried to brake for the corner I couldn’t and the rear made a big slide. I want to say sorry to Nicky because I ruined his race today.” Before the race Lorenzo had declared that he had nothing to lose as he tried to close Rossi’s previous 18 point lead, and he remained calm about the championship after the crash. “The title was a long shot anyway and now I just want to look forward to the final two races,” he said. Hayden, who was able to continue to finish 15th with a damaged bike, accepted Lorenzo’s apology.
“I got probably the best start I have had all season but unfortunately it proved to be my downfall,” he said. “I’m not sure what happened to Jorge - I saw he got a bad start as I passed him, then the next thing I know I felt a really hard impact. It was so hard it tore both our bikes up and obviously he couldn’t keep his upright. Thankfully I did and I got back on track but the thing was so damaged I was just riding around.” “Anyway, I can’t blame Jorge because he is fighting for the cham-
pionship, he obviously didn’t mean it and I know it is not his style. The good thing is that I didn’t get hurt, which could have easily happened in that corner.” Although he hit the ground at high speed in the incident, Lorenzo escaped with only superficial injuries from sliding across the track and run-off. I have a bit of damage to my nose and my finger but it could have been a lot worse,” he said. “This is what happens in racing and, although I am disappointed about the race, the most important thing is that I am not badly injured.”

“We don’t play too many games,” Howett told Reuters. “We put on the table what we can afford and what we think is a serious offer in the current market. I think genuinely we could work well with him, give him a car that’s quick.” He added: “We have had very good relationships with Scandinavian drivers in the rallying times that enjoy life and it works very well, so we could cope with it as a team.” Raikkonen is yet to decide on his future after agreeing to leave the Ferrari team a year before the end of his contract in order to make way for Fernando Alonso. The Finn has made it clear that he is only interested in staying in Formula 1 if he can fight for wins straight away. Howett, who had insisted it was very unlikely that Jarno Trulli would stay at the team next year, said the Italian has an offer from Toyota. He also said the team is still in talks with Timo Glock. “With both drivers we are still maintaining a degree of discussion,” said Howett. “We have put an offer on the table with Jarno, I think that he himself is not dissatisfied with the financial offer, the bottom line to some extent is certain issues on the contract and I don’t think they are negotiable from our side. He may well be in the car next year but it’s not at all clear.”
