The solemn situation was not fully felt in Bali. There was only few penjor in several areas in Bali. In tourism area in Bali, there was not even a single penjor and a banner saying “Happy Galungan Day”. A different situation can be seen during other important days.

The Galungan day in Buleleng was different compared to other area in Bali. In addition to pray in the temples, the Hindus in Buleleng also visited the local cemeteries. The Hindus pray for their relatives that already passed away and not yet being cremated or “Ngaben”. The most interesting part is after praying, they eat in the area where their families was buried. Approximately at 6 am local
time, two major cemeteries in Singaraja, Setra Buleleng and Banyuasri, was already crowded with the Hindus. Putu Edi for Banjar Jawa said that the tradition of praying in the cemetery was not only being conducted during Galungan, but also on Kuningan and Pagerwesi. “All of the family members usually gathered on the cemetery and talk to each other,” he added. By tough identity, it is expected that young generation of Bali would be released from its cultural roots. By forceful shield, they are expected to endure against the strikes of global culture. He added that self-internalization was important to strengthen the awareness and clarify the mind through interpretation of Hindu teachings and Balinese cultural values other than committing enrichment by science and technology. All endeavors were carried out to strengthen the identity. “By forceful identity, young generation would be able to face the influence of external cultures and to win the global competition,” they said. By having pure mind, young generation of Bali were expected to have capability of selecting and separating which activities were good and bad. Besides, they also should be able to distinguish which deeds were opposed to religious teaching and which ones suggested by religious scriptures. “Galungan celebration should be filled in with meaningful activities in the framework to improve the faith and devotion to God. Badung Requires to Have More Favorite Schools Denpasar (Bali Post)— During this time, smart students from Badung prefer to study in Denpasar. It is caused by Badung Regency has not had many favorite schools being capable of drawing smart students in the level of SMA 4 Denpasar. One of the schools that can be formatted into favorite school is SMAN 1 Kuta (Smansasku). Head of Committee of Smansaku, Garus Saputra, lately said that his school was appropriate to be formatted as favorite school in Badung, even it could be categorize into the same as SMAN 4 Denpasar. In terms of land, it has 0.60 hectare at new location in Seminyak; this senior high school meets the requirements. Now, it just needs to complete the buildings and learning equipment. Fortunately, Badung Government allocates a development of building, laboratory and so forth every year. Therefore, within three years to come, this school can become a quality school in Bali. The school, he said, would be shortly moved from previous location on Jalan Kartika Plaza to Seminyak. Half of the classrooms have been built in four-floored buildings. The land prepared was 1.2 hectares but it has been diminished into 0.6 hectare. Meanwhile, the supporting school at new location has been in operation for six years namely SMPN 2 Kuta. A part of students belonging to the first and second grade are studying at two locations namely in the south and north. It was this condition making the Headmaster, Wayan Karya Ariestha, be unable to call the school as favorite school. To be comparable to SMAN 4 Denpasar, he said it needed a political support from members of the House, Regency Government and community. Interpreting Galungan Holiday
Upholding Dharma that Has Been Won Galungan was first celebrated around in 804 Caka or the ninth century, during the reign of Sri Kesari Warmadewa. Celebration of Galungan transpired after a very momentous event afflicting human beings. In 2009, it means that Galungan has been celebrated since 1,127 years ago. Then, how should we interpret it and is it enough only by celebrating the victory of dharma against adharma? SPIRITUAL figures Ida Pedanda Made Gunung stated that long history of Galungan celebration should make Hindu devotees understand and interpret its essence. Never made Galungan as an opportunity to commit gambling and to get drunk that are vulnerable to raise criminal deeds. On that account, its negative impacts would not stain the purity and sacredness of Galungan and should be better through the years. Denpasar Mayor, IB Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra, expected that devotees interpret Galungan as a valuable moment for introspection and readiness to arrange the better life. In addition, devotees should not be absorbed in extravagance of excessive festivity that could lead to drunkenness and misleading. Conversely, they were expected to celebrate the holiday in sincere humbleness and devotion to God. Philosophically, said the son of former Governor IB Mantra, Galungan festivity might be interpreted by all devotees to control the wicked mind and negative traits. Devotees need not absorbed in the celebration of victory at all. However, they should uphold the dharma that has been won. By doing so, they would not lose in the darkness of life. Rai Mantra also asserted, the most important obligation on Galungan was
to keep silence for a while. In that silence, they had convenient opportunity to commit introspection. Besides, devotees should improve their faith and devotion all the times to God and grow the sense of goodwill among devotees. On that account, it could trigger shanti or peace within the community. Momentous moment of Galungan was also appropriate for us to return to our identity as Balinese human that all the times put solidarity and mutual appreciation among the fellow humans. Moment of introspection was very relevant put forward for the sake of convenience and security of Denpasar and Bali in general. Ida Pedanda Gede Putra Bajing stated that Galungan stood for victory of dharma against adharma, goodness over badness. Reflection of Galungan has sublime and profound values. The word dharma, for instance, had extensive scope of meaning. Dharma was not only intended to represent a performance of duty pursuant to respective profession and domain. Implementing virtues in accordance with Vedic literatures could also become a dharma that should be realized. Its simpler example, as a good devotee we should be able to communicate in compliance with ethics and norms. “Utterances signify self-
reflection of the self. If it is good, polite and ethical so the inner self of that people must be cool, peaceful and clear,” said Ida Pedanda from Geria Tegallinggah, Sumerta Kaja. He added, practicing religion in Bali was very specific. In reality, religion was indeed enclosed by custom and intense culture. Nevertheless, if one would like to practice it sincerely, there would be no problem. Triple Enemies Ida Pedanda Gede Putra Tembau from Geria Aan, Banjarangkan, Klungkung asserted that Galungan celebration denoted a message to remind all Hindu devotees to control themselves in order they could defeat enemies, both inside and outside, chiefly inside the self. When devotees could control over the enemies inside, it would be very easy for them to defeat the external enemies. According to Ida Pedanda, on Galungan or Dungulan, Hindu devotees should focus themselves on preparation of Galungan ritual. Enjoying fun and hospitality was not necessarily carried out extravagantly, but pursuant to affordability and sincerity. In essence, Galungan was only a celebration. He added, Galungan celebration was sufficient by presenting oblation in the form of soda putih kuning directed to Almighty God and ancestors and segehan for bhuta kala (beings of lower realm). “It is different from temple festival, Galungan essentially poses a self-improvement,” he said. Penjor Galungan not a show case ON Buda Kliwon Dungulan or last Wednesday (Oct 14), Hindu devotees were deeply involved in solemnity of Galungan celebration. One day before Galungan known as Penampahan Galungan, Hindu devotees across Bali were ensured to install penjor (bamboo log equipped with ritual paraphernalia) in front of entrance gate of each house compound. It implied their readiness to welcome the festivity falling every 210 days.

Penjor competition was held in Kuta on Wednesday, October 14th 2009. Penjor give more solemn scenery during the celebration of Galungan.
Though such holiday was interpreted as a procession representing the victory of dharma (trait of goodness) against adharma (negative traits), it did not necessarily mean that celebration of victory should be manifested into grandiose parties. Similarly, the penjor of Galungan, consisting of curved bamboo log embellished with young coconut leaf ornaments and festooned with some crops, is not necessarily made luxuriously spending hundreds of thousand up to millions of rupiahs. Penjor of Galungan is not a show-off or media used to indicate social status or wealth. Contacted last Saturday (Oct 10), the Head of Saba Walaka of Central Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI), I Ketut Wiana and the Head of PHDI of Bali Chapter IGN Sudiana admitted to feel very enthusiastic on seeing the vivacity of Hindu devotees in Bali. They installed penjor by celebration of great religious holidays including before Galungan. However, both lecturers at State Hindu Dharma Institute of Denpasar (IHDN) reminded that such enthusiasm should not only orientate in outer layer or physical form of the penjor looking grandiose. He said that, penjor of Galungan posed symbolization of sincerity and expression of gratitude of devotees to the Creator on graces He had bestowed. “To thank God for those endowments, devotees should not take advantage the crops excessively. Even, it proves that devotees are not wise in harnessing the endowment graced,” said Wiana justified by Sudiana. Wiana dan Sudiana added, it was not ethical if penjor of Galungan was taken advantage as a show-off. Without mentioning the name of a region, he observed there was a tendency of devotees to start adding or reducing the elements that should be present at a penjor of Galungan. It was merely intended to put emphasis on aesthetic values and to create grandiose image. Ironically, such elements becoming ornaments of penjor were expensive and even denoted an import product. Drunken, Police Personal Crashed a Military and Security Officer Gianyar (Bali Post)—
Mazda vehicle with police number DK 212 PA driven by Ari Pratama (25) from Blumbang, Bangli, last Monday (Oct 12) at late night, crashed a stall of Nyoman Sudianta on Jalan Astina Timur, Gianyar. Before crashing the stall, the vehicle driven by police personnel crashed two motorbike riders denoting a member of Armed Forces (TNI) in charge at Military Command of 1626 Bangli and a security officer. According to information, both victims are under medical treatment
at Sanjiwani Hospital of Gianyar. Parwoto was a staff at Military Command of 1626 Bangli suffered from an injury on head and broken leg. Meanwhile, Komang Adi Suandana a security officer from Sidan Village, Gianyar suffered from broken wrist and bleeding nose. Such successive crash occurred at 01:30 LT. At that time, the vehicle of Ari Pratama came from east direction. On slight curving road, his vehicle took more spaces of right lane. At the same time, from opposite direction, two motorbikes came ridden by a military and security of-
ficer. Due to vehicle ran at high speed, the crash was unavoidable. Two riders of motorbike were flung away. Meanwhile, the vehicle remained to speed. Since it was uncontrollable, the vehicle finally crashed a stall next to the office of Municipal Waterworks (PDAM) of Gianyar. Wall of security officer damaged. Meanwhile, security officer of PDAM who was on duty was surprised and rushed to go out, and saved himself. Severe collision occurred. This caused local resident wake up. For the seventh time, the action of Peace Reflection was held at Bajra Sandhi Struggle Monument, Renon. The event transpiring on Monday (Oct 12) was attended by some one thousand participants from interfaith, different ethnic and social background. All participants said prayers solemnly through Padayatra procession. Though participants were not as many as the one in last year, Peace Reflection VII stayed to contain strategic significance namely disseminating peace to all over the world. Great impression of the event was graced by the presence of interfaith figures such sulinggih (high priest), clergyman, pastor and religious leader. Other participants were from tourism industry, school/ campus and community figures. Head of Committee, Nyoman Baskara, affirmed that the event should become a moment of contemplation. “We should make this
commemoration as a kind of introspection and realize that peace, orderliness, and bliss should be fought together. Let’s make Bali as icon of world peace,” he appealed. Regional Secretary of Bali Province Nyoman Yasa who read the speech of Governor Mangku Pastika said that the World Reflection event should become a spirit to engender optimism, particularly in facing various kinds of challenges in years to come that were getting more complex. By doing so, it would emerge an intelligent thinking to build every single element of community. Peace Reflection stayed to maintain its similar agenda, namely Padayatra procession. It was an activity where participants spread a white cloth along 500 meters surrounding the Bajra Sandhi Monument while chanting prayers pursuant to their religion and belief. UNITED NATIONS - Israel and the Palestinians came under renewed international pressure on Wednesday to produce “credible” domestic probes of war crimes allegedly committed during the recent Gaza conflict, as demanded by the UN. A representative for UN chief Ban Ki-moon called for the probes during a Security Council debate on the Middle East, in which Palestinians and their supporters turned the spotlight on harsh criticism of Israel’s conduct during the threeweek war that begun in late 2008. Some 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed in the fighting that erupted when Israel launched a massive military offensive on Gaza on December 27, in response to rocket firing by Palestinian militants. A recent 575-page report by a UN team led by South African
judge Richard Goldstone accused both Israel and Palestinian armed groups of committing war crimes and possible crimes against humanity during the conflict. Ban “calls upon all of the parties to carry out credible domestic investigations into the conduct of the conflict without delay,” UN Under Secretary General Lynn Pascoe told the Security Council. Britain, France and the United States backed the appeal. “We urge the Israeli government to carry out full, credible and impartial investigations into the allegations reported in the Goldstone Report,” Britain’s outgoing UN Ambassador John Sawers told the council. “We believe that the parties must now launch independent inquiries in line with international standards on the alleged violations of international humanitarian law and human rights during the Gaza crisis,” his French counterpart Gerard Araud said.

BUCHAREST - Romanian President Traian Basescu on Wednesday proposed forming a unity government with all parties after Emil Boc’s centre-right administration collapsed as the country battles a deep recession. “I would suggest looking at the possibility of a national unity government,” Basescu said at a meeting at the presidential palace with the leaders of all political parties. He rejected the idea put forward by some parties of an interim government made up of technocrats. And, a week before an International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission to the country, he warned of economic troubles if the country failed to secure approval for the latest tranche of loans. “If we fail to obtain the two tranches of loans, including that
due between October and December, we risk finding it impossible to pay salaries and pensions,” he cautioned late Wednesday. The opposition dismissed Basescu’s proposals. “A unity government implies complicated negotiations that would last until after the presidential election,” Mircea Geoana, leader of the Social Democrats, told reporters. He insisted on the need for Romania to have a new government soon in view of the economic crisis in the country. Earlier, the three opposition parties that toppled Boc and his Liberal Democrats via a no-confidence vote on Tuesday nominated Sibiu Mayor Klaus Iohannis as their own candidate to replace Boc. Basescu, an ally of Boc, declined to comment on the nomination.

WASHINGTON - US President Barack Obama on Wednesday lit a lamp to celebrate the Hindu holiday Diwali as he reached out to Asian Americans with a new initiative aimed at expanding opportunities. Obama became the first US president to personally take part in a White House ceremony for the festival of lights, lighting a “diya” oil lamp inside the executive mansion and bowing respectfully before a Hindu priest. “While this is a time of rejoicing, it’s also a time for reflection, when we remember those who are less fortunate and renew our commitment to reach out to those in need,” Obama said. Obama used the occasion to sign an executive order setting up a commission, comprised of 20 members from a wide range of government agencies, to conduct a two-year study
of how to assist Asian Americans. The executive order saluted the success of many Asian Americans but pointed out that some communities — Americans of Hmong, Cambodian and Malaysian descent — suffer high rates of poverty. One in five Asian Americans lacks health insurance, in part because more than one million of them are sole proprietors of businesses, the order said. “It’s tempting, given the strengths of the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, for us to buy into the myth of the ‘model minority’ and to overlook the very real challenges that certain Asian
American and Pacific Islander communities are facing,” Obama said. He also pointed to health disparities such as higher rates of diabetes and Hepatitis B, along with barriers to employment and workplace advancement. Previous presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush had also launched initiatives for Asian Americans. But some community activists were upset that Bush’s initiative, run under the Commerce Department, was tightly focused on business development rather than a range of issues. Obama “has restored its broad mission to ensure that all federal agencies are addressing the needs of underserved Asian American and Pacific Islander communities,” said Representative Mike Honda, who heads the community’s caucus in Congress.

GABORONE - Tshepo Mokwena had a glittering education, sponsored by the Botswana government’s diamond wealth, but a year after graduating she still has no job in the tiny southern African nation. “I only benefited from the diamonds through my studies which were sponsored by the government, but that is of no use now as I am jobless,” the 26-year-old political science graduate told AFP. Despite being one of Africa’s best-governed countries, hailed for evading the resource curse of corruption and mismanagement, and one of its most successful economies, many Batswana feel they have not benefited from the gem.
With a population of nearly two million and gross domestic product of 26 billion US dollars in 2008, efforts to boost infrastructure and jobs have been slow and 47 percent of the population lives on one dollar a day. “There is no doubt that Botswana is a rich country, but that does not translate to everyone in Botswana being rich,” said Imogen Mogotsi, head of the Economics Department at the University of Botswana. She said people in Botswana benefit from the diamond wealth through the infrastructure and government programmes, such as heavily subsidised education and free antiretrovirals to treat AIDS. Arctic ice cap to disappear in 20-30 years: study Agence France-Presse
LONDON - The Arctic ice cap will disappear completely in summer months within 20 to 30 years, a polar research team said as they presented findings from an expedition led by adventurer Pen Hadow. It is likely to be largely ice-free during the warmer months within a decade, the experts added. Veteran polar explorer Hadow and two other Britons went out on the Arctic ice cap for 73 days during the northern spring, taking more than 6,000 measurements and observations of the sea ice. The raw data they collected from March to May has been analysed, producing some stark predictions about the state of the ice cap. “The summer ice cover will completely vanish in 20 to 30 years but in less than that it will have considerably retreated,” said Professor Peter Wadhams, head of the polar ocean physics group at Britain’s prestigious Cambridge University. “In about 10 years, the Arctic ice will be considered as open sea.” Starting off from northern Canada, Hadow, Martin Hartley and Ann Daniels skied over the ice cap to measure the thickness of the remaining ice, assessing its density and the depth of overlying snow, as well as taking weather and sea temperature readings. Across their 450-kilometre (290 mile) route, the average thickness of the ice floes was 1.8 metres (six feet), while it was 4.8 metres when incorporating the compressed ridges of ice. “An average thickness of 1.8 metres is typical of first year ice, which is more vulnerable in the
summer. And the multi-year ice is shrinking back more rapidly,” said Wadhams. “It’s a concrete example of global change in action. “With a larger part of the region now in first year ice, it is clearly more vulnerable. The area is now more likely to become open water each summer, bringing forward the potential date when the summer sea ice will be completely gone.” Doctor Martin Sommerkorn, senior climate change adviser for the World Wide Fund for Nature’s international Arctic programme, said the survey painted a sombre picture of the ice meltdown, which was happening “faster than we thought”. “Remove the Arctic ice cap and we are left with a very different and much warmer world,” he said. Loss of sea ice cover will “set in motion powerful climate feedbacks which will have an impact far beyond the Arctic itself,” he added. “This could lead to flooding affecting one quarter of the world’s population, substantial increases in greenhouse gas emission from massive carbon pools and extreme global weather changes.” “Today’s findings provide yet another urgent call for action to world leaders ahead of the United Nations climate summit in Copenhagen in December to rapidly and effectively curb global greenhouse gas emissions.”

FRANKFURT - Chinese comic book artists are starting to reach global readers and might have a relatively free hand if they steer clear of taboos like sex and separatism. “In people’s imaginations, comics are for little children,” Shi Ming of the writers association PEN told AFP as the Frankfurt Book Fair made space on its countless shelves for a couple of dozen comics made in China. “Comics give you the impression you should not take it seriously,” Shi explained. “Authors and publishing houses are using this to transport some other messages.” Private literary agent Wang Ning, who displayed Chinese comics on the guest of honour’s stand, said: “You can publish everything except sex, Tibet and Xinjiang,” a restive ethnic Uighur region in northwestern China. Unsuccessful attempts were made to find a stand official able to speak about comics from Chinese state-owned publishing groups. But Wang said a major change occured in 2005 when French publisher Xia Pan commissioned a compilation of 10 modern stories entitled Chroniques de Pekin (Beijing Chronicles), to which a German edition was added this year. Written and illustrated by
Beijing residents it portrays “different pictures and a more complete picture maybe” of China than that given by media, according to Joachim Kaps, managing director of the German distributor Tokyopop. Shi Ming, an author and board member of PEN’s German chapter, said that while Chinese censorship had spread to commercial and personal issues such as one’s faith, “it’s only a question of time” before it eased bit by bit. “The social discussion is getting wider and wider” and topics like local corruption or women who want more than one child have been aired for years.” Shi said Chinese leaders were debating how to take the country forward and said the fact they accepted inevitable scrutiny as guest of honour at the world’s biggest book fair was a good sign. “They don’t want to replace the system, they want to change it,” he noted. Editors, meanwhile, “are looking for commercial successes by publishing new books even with critical content,” Shi said, adding that “published ideas could have an influence on public opinion.” Beijing Chronicles speaks about personal issues, urban renewal decisions and the selection of Olympic athletes, and Wang said he would try to get the comics distributed in the country where they were drawn. “When we did this book we cancelled some sexy things and some other things,” he nonetheless acknowledged. “So this book is OK for China.”

Indonesian graft fighter slams murder charge Agence France-Presse
JAKARTA - Indonesia’s former anti-corruption tsar on Thursday denounced charges he murdered a rival for the affections of a 22-yearold golf caddy, saying he was the victim of a smear campaign. To applause from the packed public gallery, sacked chief of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Antasari Azhar accused shadowy interests of trying to frame him for the murder to silence the powerful anti-graft body. “The murder accusation is clearly an attempt to kill my personal character due to my position as the KPK’s chief,” he told the South Jakarta district court in his first opportunity to respond to the charges at his trial. He said he had no role in the shooting murder of Nasrudin Zulkarnaen, the head of a stateowned company who was gunned down by two assassins in March as he drove to the Modernland golf club in Jakarta. Azhar, 56, was arrested on May 4 and has been held in police custody for allegedly masterminding the murder. Zulkarnaen was married to Rhani Juliani, the chief prosecution witness and a golf caddy at the course both men frequented. The police indictment contains explicit details on Azhar’s alleged
attempts to seduce Juliani in a Jakarta hotel room. It says his designs were discovered by Zulkarnaen, who threatened to expose the married KPK chief’s alleged infidelities to the media. Azhar rejected the allegations as “vulgar”. “The story of my meeting with Rhani at Hotel Grand Mahakam has been spiced up to sound so ‘superb’ and vulgar,” he told the court. “But the truth may be different as the story is not supported by proof other than (the statement) of Rhani as witness.” The former prosecutor added that the KPK, which he headed from 2007 until his suspension in March, had “made many parties uneasy and uncomfortable”. The KPK was established in 2003 after the rampant corruption of the Suharto dictatorship and a series of banking scandals linked to the Asian economic crisis of the late 1990s. be detected,” he said. The anti-terror unit of the National Police Headquarters had arrested 466 terror suspects since the Bali bombing incident in 2002. A total of 14 of the number were killed because they resisted arrest when police raided them. With the death of a number of terrorists, vital communication and information links among terrorist cells had been effectively cut. Also with voluntary surrender of terror suspect Afham Ramadha, the police hope there will be an example to his peers still at large to also give themselves up, a spokesman said. “We think Afham’s surrender will have a positive impact and hopefully he will be followed by other terror suspects,” National Police Headquartres spokesman Nanan Soekarna said. After the raid, the police stated that three people had been involved in hiding Zuhri and Syahrir, namely Fajar Firdaus, caught in Bekasi before the raid, Sonny Jayadi, seized in Padang, West Sumatra, and Afham who surrendered. Nanan said Fajar, Sonny and Afham were believed to be linked with terrorists because they had hidden Zuhri and Syahrir who were wantend by the police. He said the three also knew that Zuhri and Syahrir kept a number of small self-made bombs in their room. “Therefore, the police had arrested them for their role in hiding the terror suspects,” he said. JAKARTA - Indonesia has indefinitely suspended the traffic of domestic helpers to Kuwait due to concern over widespread abuse and exploitation by their employers, the labour ministry said Thursday. About 500 women with complaints ranging from physical beatings to the denial of pay are sheltering at the Indonesian embassy in the oilrich Gulf emirate, awaiting assistance to be sent home, ministry spokesman Budhi Laksana told AFP. At Indonesia’s request, Kuwait stopped accepting new maid arrivals on September 14, he said. “We have temporarily stopped sending domestic helpers to Kuwait since September 14 to protect our helpers who had problems with their employers there,” Laksana said. “The suspension will go on indefinitely until the problems are sorted out.” There are around 60,000 Indonesian domestic helpers in Kuwait and they are typically paid as little as 60 Kuwaiti dinars (210 dollars) a month, he said. “Most said they were owed salaries and when they asked their employers for the money, they were beaten up and some ended up in hospital,” Laksana said, referring to the 500 women at the embassy. Indonesia imposed a similar ban on sending maids to Malaysia in June, after a 43-year-old Malaysian woman was charged with causing grievous bodily harm by beating and scalding her Indonesian employee her with boiling water. “We haven’t lifted the ban in Malaysia because the problems our helpers faced there haven’t been solved,” Laksana said.

The event was held by Anak Agung Ngurah Agung and was attended by officers throughout Denpasar and the head of Denpasar regency, Rai Mantra. Ngurah Agung said that the event was held in order to tighten the relationship between the Hindus and other religions in Bali. “The event is the symbol of our love towards Indonesia. We must live in harmony even tough we have different believes. We all are brother and sister,” he added. Ngurah Agung also said that the open house is the continuation of the spirit of Puri Pemecutan where they always keep good relationship between the Moslem in Kepaon, Wanasari, and other areas. “Our ancestors often conducted

Sense of togetherness and mutual assistance are discernible in that performance activity. To preserve the art, every year ngelawang becomes a special agenda in Bali Arts Festival (BAF). Hindu community in Bali truly believe that such ngelawang procession constitutes a sacred activity to expel evil spirits and diseases disturbing human beings, including in niskala (invisible) manner to drive out those that would like to disorganize the security of Bali. In the past, before television broadcast has spread out to every nook and cranny, ngelawang activ-
ity as this became a village entertainment where most part residents were farmers. Show taking place for some 10-15 minutes in front of door of each house compound was believed to have capability of exuding sacred vibration so that residents were avoided from any disaster and disease. Having completed the show, residents would put offerings or canang sari to their honored sacred effigy as gratitude. Ingredients: 1.2 kg (2½ lb) pork knuckles, cut in 2.5 cm (1in) slices 2 tbsp oil 8 shallots, peeled and chopped 3 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 2.5 cm (1in) ginger, peeled and chopped 2.5 cm (1in) fresh turmeric, peeled and chopped 10 candlenuts, chopped ¾ tsp coriander seeds, crushed 2.5 cm (1in) kencur, peeled and crushed 1 tsp dried shrimp paste 1 tsp black peppercorns, crushed 2 salam leaves 1 tsp salt 2 cups chicken stock Large red chilies, fried shallots and basil to garnish Preparation: Bring 3 liters (12 cups) of lightly salted water to boil in a stockpot. Add knuckles, reduce heat and simmer for approximately 45 minutes until meat is three quarter cooked. Heat oil in heavy saucepan. Add all ingredients except chicken stock and sauté for about 2 minutes until spices change color. Pour chicken stock into saucepan, mix well and bring to the boil. Add cooked knuckles, mix well, bring back to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes or until knuckles are completely cooked. Expectations ramped up after solid JPMorgan profit Agence France-Presse
WASHINGTON - The US banking industry’s first major earnings report suggested the troubled sector is coming back to health, pushing up expectations for other big financial firms. Goldman Sachs and Citigroup were set to report third-quarter results early Thursday on the heels of JPMorgan Chase, which said on Wednesday its quarterly profit jumped to 3.6 billion dollars. Jon Ogg at 24/7 Wall Street said the report represented “very impressive earnings” from “the cleanest bank in America.” “The results are strong enough that it has set a very high bar for its peers,” he said. Goldman Sachs is expected to show a healthy profit for the July-September period, while Citi is projected to see further losses as it struggles to emerge from the credit crisis with a massive injection of capital from the government. Analysts say that overall the sector is on the mend but with lingering troubles from the housing sector and consumer loans. “We believe that the worst of the credit crisis is now probably behind us,” said analysts at Zacks Investment Research in a note to clients. Zacks said the bigger banks “benefited greatly from the various programs launched by the government,” but that many smaller lenders “are still in a very weak financial state.” JPMorgan Chase said its profit came largely from investment banking and trading results, which offset weakness in the consumer sector, especially in credit cards. Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan Chase chairman and chief executive, said the results
were positive but offered a cautious outlook. “While we are seeing some initial signs of consumer credit stability, we are not yet certain that this trend will continue,” he said. More than half the profit, or 1.9 billion dollars, came from investment banking. The company lost 700 million dollars on credit card operations and 1.0 billion dollars in consumer loans. It also set aside 3.8 billion dollars for credit losses, compared with 2.0 billion in the prior year, “reflecting continued weakness in the home equity and mortgage loan portfolios.” Commercial banking profits rose nine percent from a year ago to 341 million dollars, and asset management earnings increased 23 percent to 430 million. Another big contributor to the bottom line was the corporate and private equity segment, including investment trading income. That amounted to a profit of 1.28 billion dollars, compared with a loss of 1.78 billion a year earlier. The report was the first from the major US banks, which have been struggling with an unprecedented crisis stemming from a collapse of the housing bubble and a global credit squeeze. JPMorgan has managed to navigate the global financial crisis and maintain profitability better than most of its peers, and has expanded to become the second-largest US bank by assets.

Asian outlook clouded by fragile global recovery WASHINGTON - Asia may be leading the world’s recovery from recession but its growth prospects are still clouded by the fragile global economic situation, the Asian Development Bank’s top economist said. The bank has projected “very optimistic” regional growth rates in 2010 but they could be dampened by a weak global recovery, especially in industrialized nations, and premature government strategies to exit from recession, chief economist Lee JongWha said at a Wednesday forum in Washington. “The question is whether recovery will be sustained in 2010 and beyond,” he said. “The outlook still remains uncertain, especially the downside risks which may come from a protracted global slowdown and which will delay the region’s full recovery.”
The Manila-based ADB had recently forecast that developing Asian economies, led by China and India, will grow by an average 6.4 percent in 2010 from about 3.9 percent this year. “So, even though we are now leading the recovery, there is no room for complacency because global recovery seems to be in the near term very weak,” said Lee, a Harvard-educated South Korean who is chief spokesperson for ADB on economic forecasts and trends. While Asia had proved to be more resilient than other regions in confronting the worst global downturn in decades, its fortunes remain tied to the key export markets of the industrial world, Lee said. “Asia’s increased export-orientation raises its vulnerability to external shocks. Although there have been lot of discussions about recovery, in reality the Asian countries have not decoupled from the industrial countries.
“So Asia cannot be the sole driver of its own growth and we still rely on external demand,” he added at the forum organized by the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Peterson economist Michael Mussa said he did not expect most of the world to be mired in recession or in extremely sluggish growth, including the United States where most data point to economic growth in the third quarter after nearly two years in recession. On Wednesday the Dow Jones Industrial Average gave hope that the US was weathering the recession, trading above the key emotional threshold of 10,000 for the first time in a year with a strong rally led by better-than expected profits from top firms including Intel Corp. and JPMorgan Chase. The rally inspired gains in nearly all key Asian markets on Thursday. “The ‘V’ shaped recovery is alive and well in emerging Asia,” said former International Monetary Fund chief economist Mussa, predicting a strong upturn in regional growth.
Top growth driver China snapped back from close to zero growth at the end of 2008 to already about eight percent growth in first quarter this year while at least half a dozen other economies in the region posted growth rates of between 10 and 20 percent, Mussa noted. “My worry, of course, is that the initial bounce back from an extremely sharp downturn in world trade and industrial production will not continue at a 10 to 20 percent rate quarter-onquarter for the next three or four years,” Mussa said. The ADB’s Lee warned governments against prematurely winding down their stimulus measures or tightening monetary policies as this could derail the fragile recovery. “Any hasty tightening of the monetary and fiscal polices will easily disrupt this ongoing recovery, especially in the situation of a weak recovery of the global economy,” he said. “The timing of withdrawing monetary stimulus is very important for industrialized countries but also for Asian countries.” (Agence France-Presse)

His success was all the more impressive since the song knocked the Black Eyed Peas off the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100, which they had held for a record 26 straight weeks, according to the US chart’s website. “This is insane. It’s just incredible to have reached number one with my first release in America. It’s difficult for me to put into words,” Sean wrote on his website, before embarking on a US tour on the back of his chart success. “My head is spinning. I’ve been grinding hard for the last seven years releasing records independently and now to have the biggest record in the USA this week, it’s just a dream come true,” he said. At the meeting, Maxima Pictures had agreed to do as directed by the minister in order to avoid a growing controversy in the community, so that it will not increase the problem, the release said. Hidayat said, as quoted in the release, that his side had to cancel Miyabi’s presence and postpone the process of Miyabi film “Kidnapping Miyabi” due to the strong protests against the movie. Nuh appreciated the Maxima Picture’s preparedness to cancel Miyabi’s visit , because this nation did not want to be busy with issues that really can be solved in a good way.

a co-founder of the San Franciscobased company said in a blog post. “Our partnership with Bharti Airtel, the largest mobile operator in India, means a huge population of people can now send tweets at standard rates and receive tweets for free,” Stone said. “There are over one billion people with Internet access on the planet but there are more than four billion people with mobile phones and Twitter can work on all of them

MONTEVIDEO - Argentina scraped into the World Cup Wednesday with a 1-0 win over Uruguay as Diego Maradona finally celebrated mission accomplished after a stumbling, lacklustre qualifying campaign. The two-time champions needed a goal by substitute Mario Bolatti six minutes from time to earn the three points and secure the fourth and final qualifying spot from South America. Brazil, Chile and Paraguay had already made sure of their places in the finals. Uruguay finished in fifth and now face a play-off against Costa Rica, who finished fourth in the CONCACAF region behind USA, Mexico and Honduras, to decide their World Cup fate. In a poor match with few opportunities, the crucial moment came when Uruguay were reduced to 10 men when Martin Caceras was redcarded for a foul on Jonas Gutierrez. From the ensuing free-kick, Juan Sebastian Veron had a shot charged down, but Bolatti, on the field for just four minutes after replacing Gonzalo Higuain, reacted quickest to the loose ball to beat Nestor Muslera in the Uruguayan goal. Maradona, who had used over 70 players since taking over a year ago, opted to leave Carlos Tevez on the bench alongside Martin Palermo, who grabbed the last-minute goal which saw off Peru on Saturday. “I thank the team and the fans, who crossed the River Plate, for the privilege of taking Argentina to the World Cup,” said Maradona, who was in combative mood at his postmatch news conference. “But there were people who did not believe in us and who treated me like rubbish.” Uruguay, needing a win to make sure of automatic qualification, were on top early with Argentina unsurprisingly nervous and defender Gabriel Heinze picking up a booking after just nine minutes. Andres Scotti almost gave the home side the lead at the famous Estadio Monumental, but his header slipped by Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero’s post. Lionel Messi, who has yet to shine under Maradona despite his scene-stealing performances for Barcelona, attempted to catch out Muslera with a long distance freekick. The goalless half-time stalemate suited Argentina as Ecuador, the only other rivals for the last qualifying spot, were also being held 00 at the interval by Chile in Santiago. qualifying hopes alive. Five-time champions, and group winners, Brazil were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Venezuela and they too finished with 10 men after Sao Paulo defender Miranda was redcarded. Paraguay also ended on a low note, losing 2-0 at home to Colombia. Rock-bottom Peru completed their programme with a 1-0 win over Bolivia, who had defeated Brazil at the weekend, thanks to a secondhalf strike from Johan Fano. It was Bolivia’s 38th qualifier away from their high-altitude fortress of La Paz without a win. Fano, meanwhile, was later sent-off.

Davydenko wins in Shanghai, not worried about London Agence France Presse
SHANGHAI - Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko beat Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez on Thursday to advance to the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters, and move closer to securing a place in the ATP’s season-ending final. But the sixth-seeded Davydenko — who beat the 10th seed Gonzalez, 6-3, 7-5 — said he would not be heartbroken should he fail to qualify for the eight-man World Tour Finals in London, and would instead just enjoy the time off. “Like my wife said already — ‘You are already Top 15 this year. Why do you want to think about London?’” he told reporters. “I’ll enjoy a holiday if I don’t reach London. You can lose your mind worrying and lose in every tournament in the first round.” Davydenko is currently battling for a spot in the November 22-29 tournament along with a potential

PARIS - Lance Armstrong tried to conceal it, but a wry smile gave away just how high his rivalry with yellow jersey rival Alberto Contador may soar on their anticipated duel at the Tour de France in 2010. To fans who missed out on this year’s epic, Spanish climbing ace Contador overcame huge pressures off the bike to claim his second overall win, and fourth in a major Tour, as Armstrong, returning after a four-year absence, did well to finish third at nearly six minutes off the pace. But the backdrop to their rivalry was even juicier. Normally teams at the Tour de France serve to have one designated leader fighting for the race’s coveted yellow jersey. But as both Armstrong and Contador were riding for the same outfit, Astana, the camp was split, leading to tensions, accusations and back-biting that really only let fly once the race was done. Now with Armstrong racing for Radio Shack, the pair are now planning respective campaigns ahead of a hugely-anticipated duel in July 2010 when the race begins in Rotterdam. While Armstrong — who battled cancer to return to cycling and win the race a record seven years in a row — said Britain’s

Armstrong in 2010 “has allowed me to feel settled and calm”. “It has taken a huge load off my back. Honestly, I couldn’t see myself spending another year like that,” he added. And although doubts remain over his future with Astana — he has been trying, unsuccessfully, to get out of his remaining one-year contract — the Spaniard’s talent should speak for itself once the race gets going. Although aware of the threat of Armstrong, Contador has given the ageing American the ultimate motivation to show he can still cut it with the under-30s. “My authentic rival is Andy Schleck,” said Contador. On the summit finishes where Contador usually has the luxury of attacking from afar, only Schleck, a potential future champion, was able to follow. The third week of racing in the Pyrenees next year, where the legendary Col du Tourmalet will be crested once on stage 16 and host a summit finish the next day — could be decisive ahead of the race’s only time trial on stage 19. “If I have good legs, I can take out a lot of time in the mountains going into the final time trial,” said Contador, who rubber-stamped his victory in July by winning the race’s second and final time trial. “Looking at the time trial, it’s better for me than last year. This Tour is better for me than last year, especially with a stage finish atop a climb so difficult as the Tourmalet.”

Yamaha domination is over, say riders Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo think their advantage over the rest of the field has evaporated in recent races and expect Casey Stoner in particular will be hard to beat in Australia. The Yamaha duo have won 10 of this year’s 14 races between them and are fighting for the championship with three rounds to go, but while Lorenzo dominated at Estoril a fortnight ago, Rossi was pushed back to fourth behind Ducati rider Stoner and Honda’s Dani Pedrosa. With Stoner now back to full fitness after an illness-plagued year, Rossi thinks the Australian is likely to start taking points off the title rivals - especially on home ground at Phillip Island this weekend. “Especially in the last race in Portugal, all three [Lorenzo, Stoner
and Pedrosa] had a great, great race with a high level of pace,” said Rossi. “So it looks like Stoner and Pedrosa are also in great shape for this race - especially Casey, who has won the last two races here at Phillip Island and it’s his home grand prix, so for sure that’s extra motivation.” Lorenzo agreed that Yamaha would not have the battle for victory all to itself in Australia. “For sure they are also really fast, especially Casey at this track,” he said. “This track is very positive for the Ducati.” Rossi is not sure whether Stoner and Pedrosa’s pace will help or hinder his efforts to keep Lorenzo at
bay in the world championship - but said his Estoril result proved that the Yamaho duo could not afford any weaknesses now that their rivals were on the same pace. “It’s possible that it can be an advantage, but also a disadvantage like in Portugal,” he said of Stoner and Pedrosa’s improvement. “Now if you don’t work at the maximum in practice and you are not at 100 per cent for the race, it’s possible to finish in fourth position and lose a lot of points. We have to stay concentrated, use all the practice to set up the bike, understand where we have to improve.” The gap between the Yamaho pair in the championship had reached 50 points after Lorenzo crashed at Brno, but it is now down to 18 with three races remaining.
Felipe Massa says he remains suspicious that Fernando Alonso did know about the deliberate crash plot at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix but has vowed not to let it affect his future relationship with the Spaniard. Massa spoke to Brazilian media during a get-together in Sao Paulo on Wednesday and, during the lunch, he said he was in no doubt that Alonso had to have been aware of the plans for Nelson Piquet to crash deliberately in the Singapore event last year to try and help him win. “In all, he is the least of the problem,” Massa was quoted as saying by the Brazilian media about Alonso’s involvement in the affair. “It was the team and Nelson - but Alonso was part of the problem. He knew. We can not know it [but] of course he knew. [It’s an] absolute
certainty.” The comments created a huge media storm in Brazil ahead of this weekend’s grand prix, and Massa and Ferrari moved to clarify the remarks in a statement issued on the Maranello team’s official website on Wednesday evening. In it, Massa said that his comments relate to a feeling he has rather than being based on facts, and he totally respects the FIA’s findings from its investigations that Alonso was not aware of the crash plot. “What I’ve said is the outcome of a hunch I’ve had and is not based on any concrete evidence,” Massa said in his statement. “The FIA World Council announced that there was no indication that Fernando may have been informed of what had happened and I respect this outcome.
