LOS ANGELES - Warner Bros. on Monday scaled back the world premiere for its sci-fi film “Blade Runner 2049” following the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history in which a gunman killed at least 59 people in Las Vegas.

The premiere for the film, which stars Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling, was scheduled for Tuesday night in Hollywood. The screening will go ahead but without a red carpet where stars chat to reporters and pose for photos. “In light of the tragic events of last night, Warner Bros. Pictures, Sony Pictures and Alcon Entertainment are cancelling the red carpet for tomorrow’s screening of ‘Blade Runner 2049,’” Time Warner Inc-owned Warner Bros. said in a statement. Monday’s red-carpet premiere in Los Angeles for the movie “Marshall” was also canceled,
and ABC television said “Dancing With the Stars” would begin with a moment of silence on Monday. Variety also reported that Las Vegas shows Cirque du Soleil and Blue Man Group canceled Monday night performances. Sunday’s shooting turned a three-day open-air country music festival into a scene of carnage. More than 500 people were injured after a 64-year-old gunman released a hailstorm of bullets into the site of the Route91 Harvest festival. Bollywood icon Aamir Khan says next film will be biggest yet SINGAPORE - Aamir Khan, the Bollywood superstar with a conscience, says his next movie about a small town teenage girl who uses the Internet to become a singing sensation will be much bigger than his last film, which was India’s highest grossing ever. Khan, 52, plays a sleazy music producer in the film “Secret Superstar” and says he is second lead to teenager Zaira Wasim, playing a schoolgirl who defies her conservative Muslim family to pursue her dream of a singing career. Khan’s last film “Dangal”, or wrestling pit, was based on the true story of a former wrestler who trains two of his daughters to become champions in the sport. It was the highest grossing movie for Bollywood, as India’s Hindi film industry is known, and was powered by huge collections in China. “While both are about the empowerment of the girl child, I feel it (Secret
Superstar) is a much bigger film,” Khan said in an interview in Singapore ahead of the movie’s release later this month. He and his wife have produced the film. “While Dangal was about the dream of a father which a daughter fulfils, this is about the hopes and aspirations of a 14-year-old girl from a small town in India. I don’t know what the box office will be but it’s a bigger film than Dangal in what it’s trying to say.” Three of Khan’s films are in Bollywood’s top four all-time hits. Besides Dangal, these include “PK”, in which he played an alien dealing with religious divisions in India, and “3 Idiots”, about the frailties in India’s education system. All three have also done well in China, and Khan said he was “very happy with the type of relationship that’s building between me and my audience in this part of the world with each film”.
He also produced and acted in a popular television documentary series on social ills in India called “Satyameva Jayate”, or Truth Alone Triumphs. That series led him to set up a nonprofit to work on a project to ease the shortage of water in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, he said. Despite the social messages in his movies, Khan said he has no desire to become politician, as some other Bollywood stars have. “The desire in me to contribute back to society is something I can do very well in the field that I am in,” he said. “I don’t have to join politics. That’s an area I don’t ever want to go into.” Khan, who belongs to India’s Muslim minority, was embroiled in controversy two years ago when he said his Hindu wife had asked him if they should move out of India over concerns about insecurity. The determination of disaster-prone areas (KRB) in the case of an eruption of Mt. Agung has given way to confusion. Although the matter has been discussed for some time now, there is still no clear agreement about which areas should be included and which ones should not. The confusion has arisen because of discrepancies between the determination of KBR areas according to the Governor of Bali, the BNPB and The BPBD particularly with regards to the danger zones that consists of KBR III (6 km from the top of Mt. Agung and KBR II (9km fmor the top) and KBR I (12 km form the top). Initial the threat of the eruption of Mt. Agung was handled correctly with the dissemination of the data from the danger zones map and follow-up in the relevant villages. The danger zone includes all regions located within 12 km of the peak of Mt. Agung and these areas have been the focus of attention. The radius of the danger zone has been determined based on the scientific analysis conducted by the Center for Volcanology
and Geological Hazard Mitigation, that has taken into account larval flow, hot cloud bursts and dispersement of incandescent rock matter according to the last eruption in 1963. The Volcanology Center issued a new map confirming the danger zone with thick lines on the map. Vulnerable areas are focused within a 9 km radius form the peak of Mt. Agung and extend southwestward, southward, southeastward, northeastward and
northward as far as 12 km from the peak of the mountain.

Transportation agency claims to have dealt with it
BANGLI - Complaints by local residents about the serious traffic congestion over the last few days in Culali, Batur, Kintamani has been responded to by the Head of the Bangli Transportation Agecncy, Gede Arta. The traffic caused by an increase in the number of trucks coming to and from the quarrying site here, said Arta has in fact been dealt with by his agency despite accusations of the contrary. Arta said that a number of officers had been deployed to keep traffic flowing on Culali road, but that they are not on duty all day.
The increased number of quarry trucks in Culali coiincides with the shutting down of quarries near Mt. Agung last week. When interviewed on Monday (Oct. 2), Gede Arta, said that although there was in fact an increase in traffic congestion in Culali road due to the increase in the number of trucks coming to and from the quarry site in Songan Villag, the traffic jams he said are not as bad as people have said. “ It is not true that traffic has come to a stand-still”, he explained. Bangli Transportation Agency, said Arta has already deployed a number of officers to oversee the flow of traffic using an ‘open-close system”, whereby vehicles from the upper area (Batur) are made to wait for the vehicles from the lower areas to come up. They have also been coordinating with the Kintamani sub-district police to ensure that overcapacity trucks will be issued sanctions. “Actually we have been dealing with it and we have officers both at the top and at the bottom. However because of the large number of trucks passing with heavy freight on steep roads, there is bound to be some line-ups” he said. He added that the authority to deal with the flow of
traffic lies with the police. Whereas the transportation agency deal with the procurement of facilities and supporting infrastructure such as the provision of traffic signs. “Actually, it is up to police authorities to deal with traffic flow. I have mentioned this repeatedly yet many people mistakenly think that this is our responsibility. Badan added that this traffic is very disruptive as people living neer Toya Mampeh are forced to to go through Penelokan to get the Kintamani Market. “Children cannot go to school because of the traffic jams”, he explained. The Bangli transportation agency has bee contacted, said Badan, but so far his report to them has not yielded any response or follow-up. “Hopefully, the officers will not just deal with traffic in front of Kintamani Market but also on Culali road”, said Badan who added that he also hopes that the the district government’S transportation agency will repair the badly damaged condition of Culali road. So all over Bali there is no problem”, said said Chairman of Commission IV of the Bali House of Representatives, I Nyoman Parta, after holding a meeting with the provincial government in the parliamentary building, on Monday (Oct. 2). Parta explained that basic health services are payed for from the BNBP’s (disaster mitigation agency) budget. The problem, he said arises when evacuees need more serious medical attention – especially in the case of people who have neither KIS not BPJS insurance. This could become a problem in the long term, he added. Evacuees may suffer health problems that are not related to volcanic eruption, such as kidney problems, strokes of congenital defects. Meet FORPHEUS, the World’s First Robot Table Tennis Tutor
TOKYO - An advanced robot developed by Japanese electronics company Omron has recently been certified by Guinness World Records as the world’s first robot table tennis tutor. FORPHEUS (Future Omron Robotics Technology for Exploring Possibility of Harmonized Automation with Sinic Theoretics) used machine learning to asses the skills of a human player, adjust its game accordingly and provide tips to help opponents improve their technique.
Unveiled at the Ceatec electronics show in Japan in 2014, FORPHEUS has come a long way in the last three years, especially after developers made a breakthrough in artificial intelligence. Originally designed to showcase Omron’s
sensor technology, the table tennis-playing robot has now become a Guinness-certified tutor thanks to machine learning. It analyzes data like the human player’s movement, the speed of the ball and the trajectory to determine his opponent’s skill level with around 90% accuracy. FORPHEUS then uses this information to adjust its play style – slow and and easy for beginners, faster and more unpredictable for advanced players. FORPHEUS is equipped with two vision sensors that identify the movement of the ball, and one motion sensor that monitors the movement of the opponent. A controller analyses the speed of the ball at one thousands times per second, allowing to predict where it is going to land and react accordingly. The AI component can also determine the spot where the return from FORPHEUS will land with
an accuracy of withing 5 centimeters, and this is projected on a screen so that the human “students” can prepare and improve their game. The special net of FORPHEUS’ ping pong table also acts as a digital display, where the human players can see encouraging messages aimed to motivate them, like “Good job!” or “Hang in there!”, but also valuable tips aimed to help them step up their game. “At the moment it is a human who teaches a robot how to behave or teach,” said FORPHEUS developer Taku Oya. “But in the next 20 years it may be possible that a robot teaches a robot or a robot develops a robot.” That may sound sci-fi, but the idea is in line with what most experts believe will happen as artificial intelligence becomes more advanced. Instant noodles must be combined with other ingredients
DENPASAR — Aside from logistical problems, the health in refugee camps must also be maintained both in terms of nutritional intake and hygiene. Many instant noodle aids provided for refugees are feared to result in new problems for refugees. But apparently, so far there has been no scientific research that proves the hazards of instant noodles. Nevertheless, it needs to be balanced with other food ingredients. This was conveyed by clinical nutrition specialist of Sanglah Hospital, Syuma Adhy Awan, recently. Nutritionally, instant noodles contain carbohydrates, oil, MSG and sodium in the spices. “If having salty taste, there must be sodium content,” he said. Carbohydrates are source of energy. When talking about foods with good nutrition, it should contain carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals and water. Instant noodles contain carbohydrate. Additionally, the making of noodles must use eggs so that it also contains protein so do oil and fat. “However, nutritional composition of instant noodle does not match balanced nutrition.
Just imagine a pack of noodle contains 325-425 calories. It is the same as we eat a plate of food. The highest content is carbohydrate and sodium,” he said. Sodium use usually amounts to 2,000 mg-2,500 mg, while the sodium content in instant noodles is about 1,000 mg, so once eating instant noodle it means to have been half as much as normal use. Moreover, people consume instant noodles more than once. Since the nutritional content of instant noodle is not balanced, it needs to be got round. It can be done by adding vegetables, chicken meat or other food ingredients, so that the composition makes good nutrition. Consumption of noodles in the long term still reaps pros and cons. Some say that consumption of noodles in the long term can result in stomach cancer. But stomach cancer is actually caused by many factors. “We do not dare to say that noodle consumption in the long term can cause a disease because there is no conclusive evidence,” he said. So, it’s okay to consume instant noodles, but should not be used as a daily menu because fresh food is better. In addition, diverse food types are also highly recommended. Heating process of noodle also causes the water content to only reach 3-5 percent. The small pores cause noodles to
look shiny. “This becomes one of the viral issues saying that noodles use wax, but actually not,” he said. One of the habits of Indonesian people is to eat carbohydrates, and one of which comes from noodles. “But it is not the main thing and not the only source. Please also eat corn, potatoes or noodles, but must be diverse and has balanced nutrition,” he concluded. Considering instant noodles have expire date, it means that noodles contain preservatives. Nevertheless, there is a maximum dose of substances that may be used. It has been regulated by the National Agency of Food and Drug Control (BPOM). In principle, if BPOM has issued registration number, it means that the product is in compliance with Indonesian food safety standards. GIANYAR — Bali Post Media Group (KMB) handed over four water tanks to the evacuees post at Sutasoma Square, Sukawati, on Sunday (Oct. 1). The Gianyar Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) ensured the water tanks will be distributed to evacuees in different hamlets. “ We really need these water tanks. Two will be used here, one will be brought to Blahbatu and the other to Gianyar”, said the Head of BPBD Gianyar, A.A. Gde Oka Digjaya. Regent of Gianyar, A.A. Gde Agung Bharata, stated that the
refillable water storage tanks are amongst the most important things hat the evacuees need to have access to. “Drinking water is the most important. People can survive for a day or two without food but even one day without water can be hazardous to ones health. This donation is therefore very important for us”, said Bharata after expressing his gratitude. Australian searchers say fruitless end is “unacceptable” in final report on MH370 mystery
SYDNEY - Australian authorities said they deeply regret not finding missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 and the ongoing mystery is “unacceptable,” in their final report on the unsuccessful search which was published on Tuesday.

MANGUPURA — The government of Badung through the local education agency has received hundreds of students who were evacuated from areas around Mount Agung. These students are scattered amongst a number of public elementary and junior high schools in the region of Badung now. Based on the latest data from the Badung education agency, there are currently a total of 570 elementary and junior high school students that have been evacuated to Badung. They are dispersed into every subdistrict in Badung in the following numbers: 33 elementary school students in Petang , 83 in Abiansemal, 73 in Mengwi, 37 in Kuta and 85 in South Kuta. The number of junior high school students are: 11
in Petang 63 in Abiansemal, 39 in Mengwi 45 37 in North Kuta and 53 in South Kuta. There are also private school students now attending school in Badung. There is 1 junior high student at SMP Parama Dipta, 4 at SMP Swastika, 2 at SMP Widya Brata, 1 at SMPK Harapan, 1 at SMPK Thomas Aquino, 2 at SMP Ngurah Rai Kerobokan, 2 at SMP Nusa Dua (2 students), and 3
evacuated students at SMP Dwijendra Bualu. “So far, these numbers do not include data for elementary school students in North Kuta as we awaiting the report of their technical unit. Made Mandi added that schools in Badung will continue to make room for students who have been evacuated. Parents are advised to try to find the closest school to wherever they have been evacuated to. Head of the Badung Education Agency, I Ketut Widia Astika, reiterated that he had instructed to all technical units across Badung to facilitate the process of accepting students who have been evacuated from areas near Mount Agung so as to lighten the burden of the situation. “We recommend that school
children who have been evacuated be placed in schools as close as possible to where they are now living”, he advised. The number of students per class will also be adjusted according to conditions caused by the evacuations, explained this bureaucrat from Kerobokan. Astika added that students can use the uniform form their original schools or even wear t-shirts given that this is an emergency situation. “ Essentially students should not be forced to wear a particular uniform, whatever clothes are available to them are fine” he said. “The reasons for the loss of MH370 cannot be established with certainty until the aircraft is found,” the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said in the report. “It is almost inconceivable and certainly societally unacceptable in the modern aviation era...for a large commercial aircraft to be missing and for the world not to know with certainty what became of the aircraft and those on board.” The disappearance of the Boeing 777 on March 8, 2014, with 239 people on board, on a flight to Beijing from the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur, has become one of the world’s greatest aviation mysteries. It is thought to have been diverted thousands of miles off course out over the southern Indian Ocean before crashing off the coast of Western Australia. Australia, which led the underwater hunt, and Malaysia and China called off a A$200 million ($160 million) search for the plane in January after finding nothing, despite the protests of families of those onboard. Australia’s main scientific agency said in August it believes with “unprecedented precision and certainty” that the plane crashed northeast of the search zone. But those findings were dismissed by Aus-
tralia’s government at the time as not specific enough, and the search has not been re-opened. Doing so depends on finding credible, new evidence about the plane’s whereabouts. The ATSB report published on Tuesday detailed the unsuccessful 1,046-day hunt for the plane, above and below the surface of the Indian Ocean, and scientific analyses of satellite pictures, sea currents and even barnacles found clinging to a piece of the plane found on Reunion Island. “The understanding of where MH370 may be located is better now than it has ever been. The underwater search has eliminated most of the high probability areas,” the ATSB said. “We...deeply regret that we have not been able to locate the aircraft, nor those 239 souls on board that remain missing.” It recommends aircraft and aircraft equipment manufacturers investigate providing better methods of automated satellite tracking for planes if they encounter problems during flight in future. that the environment of the evacuation sites is certainly different that what the children are used to, which could have an impact on their psychological well being. Children may react by being difficult, by fighting with each other or by becoming withdrawn. In order to prevent such adverse reactions, measure need to be taken to provide calm to the children, keep them busy and make them happy. “ Children need to see strong adults around them”, he added. The role of parents is important in maintaining a sense of security for the children. Parents need to be calm and show that
they feel peaceful as an example for the children. In evacuation sites , it is also important for everyone to look out for one and other. Everyone should do their best to maintain a positive atmosphere. “ In hamlets special task forces can be established to maintain harmony and members of surrounding communities can also help in this regard”, he added. According to the data compiled as of 15:00, so far there are a total of 4, 812 children from Karangasem that have been evacuated to Klungung; 1,666 toddlers, 2,046 elementary school students and 1,100 junior high school students. The company has promised to hire 10,000 new delivery staff by the end of financial 2019 to ease the strain on the 55,000 full-time drivers, who will have their overtime reduced. Apuan village in Baturiti, Tabanan is a special place for many reasons. For one it is home to two important temples: Pura Puncak Padang Dewa and Pura Natasari where Barong and Rangda - symbols of opposing forces in Bali, come to refresh their spirits and re-establish harmony. Apuan is also home to several formidable contemporary painters, all of who have developed their own distinct style of painting while remaining nonetheless rooted in or strongly influenced by Balinese traditions, whether aesthetically or philosophically. Wayan Sumerta is one of these painters and spends a better part of his time serving as Pemangku (priest) at Pura Puncak Padang Dewa. On October 1rst, Sumerta opened his solo exhibition entitled ‘Damai itu Indah’ (peace is beautiful) at Arma Museum’s gallery of contemporary art. For the occasion Arma founder Agung Rai,Ubud palace’s Tjorkorda Raka Kerthysasa, ISI Denpasar secretariat rector I Wayan Dana, Balinese dancer and Professor I Made Bandem and renown art writer Jean Couteau all spoke a few words about this unique painter and his works. Sumerta’s paintings speak volumes about his personal spiritual journey, the cultural environment in which he lives and his background as apprentice painter. Like many Balinese artists he did not especially set out to be an artist but was nonetheless bathed in the rich aesthetic heritage of this island. His paintings that combine personal, abstract, universal and inherited styles are an inspiration for the future of art on the island and harken peace for all through the power of beauty, explained the opening speakers. Like many Balinese painters, Sumerta did not set out to become a painter but was nonetheless bathed in the rich aesthetic heritage of Bali and unwittingly learned about painting from the people around him. Unlike many tradition Balinese painters however he was not taught to replicate the works of the master but instead was slowly influenced by the avant-guard works of his uncle renown painter Made Wianta who
reached well beyond the norms of traditional Balinese painting to create abstract, conceptual and other types of art works. As Wianta was experimenting with different techniques, his nephew Wayan Sumerta served as artisan colouring in the spaces of these early geometric works. It was not until many years later, after many spiritually challenging experiences that Sumerta started creating his own art works. The fact that Sumerta serves a priest in his home village is worth noting for although his art works certain speak the aesthetic language of optical art -with geometric patterns and contrasting colours creating visual vibrations, the strength of his works lies not in the optical effects that they produce alone, but rather in the deeper meaning that these vibrations speak of, particularly in the context of Balinese spirituality. The first painting that greets people as they enter the Damai Itu Indah exhibition shows the head of a barong and a butterfly that appear to be fragmenting into abstract geometric lines. As Sumeta explained: “this kind of represents my path as an artist, you see I am starting from the visual forms of Balinese culture, but the butterfly represents my own transformation and more generally the need for humans to reach beyond what they know in order to create new forms of the eternal. This eternal energy can take any form but I feel that simple geometric lines in contrasting colours create a visual vibration that points to this eternal energy without actually depicting it”.

LAS VEGAS - A retiree armed with multiple assault rifles strafed an outdoor country music festival in Las Vegas from a high-rise hotel window on Sunday, slaughtering at least 59 people before killing himself in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. The barrage of gunfire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel into a crowd of 22,000 people came in extended bursts that lasted several minutes, as throngs of terrified music fans cowered desperately on the open ground, hemmed in by fellow concert-goers, while others at the edge tried to flee. More than 525 people were injured - some by gunfire or shrapnel, some trampled - in the pandemonium adjacent to the Las Vegas Strip as police scrambled to locate the assailant. Police identified the gunman as Stephen Paddock, 64, who lived in a retirement community in Mesquite, Nevada. Authorities said they believed he acted alone, although his motive was unknown. The Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for the massacre, but U.S. officials said there was no evidence to support the claim. The distirct of Karangasem is relatively far from the intial danger zone and strangely this new list does not include Selat Village although the original map clearly indicates that Selat Village lies in the danger zone. Naturally residents of Selat in particular have been confused about what this means. “This confusion is to to misinterpretations of the contents of the map. The color red represents KBR III, pink KRB II and yellow KBR I. These are intended to confirm the relative danger although they are all are inside the general danger zone. The focus remains on the entire danger zone but then people can look at the colors to better understand”, said a BNPB official on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 2) who requested anonymity. So, in order to determine which villages fall into the disaster-prone area, the first thing to be considered whether the village falls into the radius of the danger zone. However, when looking at details of the area, the colors need to be taken into account to confirm the level of risk. When looking at the danger zone marked with a thick dotted line on the map, we can see that the town of Amplapura for example is actually within the safe zone for now. It does not fall into the danger zone. The yellow color on the map where the town of Amlapura lies is included as a disaster-prone area I. However, it should be underlined that the danger zone still needs to be
considered. “ The town of Amlapura is only under threat in the case that there is an eruption followed by rains. If it does not rain then residents of Amlapura have plenty of time to deal with the disaster. Residents of Amlapura should stay home instead of joining the other evacuees”, said the source. This BNPB officer concluded that there need not be debate about disterprone areas based on radius vs. color. The main focus he said is the danger zone that is marked with thickly dotted lines on the map. Naturally, Governor of Bali, Made Pastika, looked confused during the coordination meeting with the headmen at the command post on Sunday (Oct. 1) when responding to the questions of the headmen, especially the headman of Selat. The local government, BPBD and BNPB have not found an agreement about which villages might be affected. Finally Governor Pastika gave a resigned asnwer saying: “If you feel that you might be in danger, please evacuate, otherwise please stay home, no problem”, in response to headman I Gusti Lanang Adhiarta asked for clarity about whether his teriirpty is in the danger zone or in a safe zone. The anonymous BNPB official asked that people not exaggerate this issue. According to him, this sis not a matter of principal, the problem is how to get people ready to deal with a possible disaster. From now on people need to understand what they need to prepare and what to do and should not be overcome with panic. Data discrepancies, he said are common and can be revised. Indonesia encourages Asian parliament to resolve Rohingya crisis
JAKARTA - The delegation of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has encouraged the Asian Parliament to support efforts to resolve the humanitarian crisis in Rakhine State, Myanmar. The statement was delivered by the Indonesian delegation at the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Oct 2 and 3, 2017, according to a statement from the chairman of the Indonesian delegation, Rofi Munawar, received by ANTARA here on Tuesday. According to him, the meeting discussed 24 drafts of resolution that highlighted various issues. Rofi explained that the meeting in Cambodia was very strategic, especially to confirm Indonesias stance regarding various issues in Asia, including the Rohingya crisis. “The Indonesian delegation is here to emphasize the country’s stance over many issues, including the humanitarian crisis in Rakhine State,” the politician from the Social Justice Party (PKS) noted. Rofi remarked that Indonesia, along with the Turkish and Iranian delegations, fully supported the discussion of the resolution on Rohingya issues. Indonesia
itself has proposed several strategic points in the resolution, he added. “The Indonesian delegation proposed the Formula 4+1 to be included in the drafts. We hope that the formula can be a consensus of the Asian Parliament to resolve the humanitarian crisis in Rakhine,” Rofi asserted. Furthermore, he explained that Indonesia also emphasized that the solution to Rohingya crisis should be fundamental and comprehensive. “We may focus on the emergency of humanitarian aid, but we should not forget the root of the problem. We should urge the Myanmar government to immediately recognize Rohingyas as the citizens of the country constitutionally, “Rofi revealed. The Formula 4+1 proposed by Indonesia calls on the Myanmar government to restore stability and security; conduct maximum restraint and non-violence acts; protect all persons residing in Rakhine, regardless of race and religion; and open access to humanitarian aid. Basang Tamiang hamlet, a hub of pottery artisans
MANGUPURA - If you are a hobbyist of objects made from clay, simply come to Basang Tamiang hamlet. The territory belongs to Kapal village, Mengwi – Badung or about 15 km from Denpasar City is the central production of pottery. Even, the craft production of the community serves as the main support to pottery shops existing at Kapal village. Making pottery poses an activity carried out by most population at the hamlet inherited from generation to generation. Pottery products made are mostly in the form of ritual paraphernalia used by Hindu community. Among them, there are drinking earthenware, holy water container, earthenware vessel, plate and tray. However, in harmony with the growing demand of tourism sector, the hamlet also produces garden lamp, perforated coins and various dishes. Aside from supplying shop orders at Kapal village, local artisans also meet the demand of general public coming in person to them. For this category, the orders usually come from local people of Kapal, other Balinese people and those living outside Bali (resettlement area). Hotels also place direct order for their pottery needs such as lampshades, satay roasting pot and large size flower pots. Distinctiveness of the pottery products of Basang Tamiang compared to the others is in terms of the design where it is neutral, without finishing, thicker and applying red brick color. “Local buyers and travelers prefer Balinese earthenware pottery to products of outside the region such as Lombok pottery,” said I Ketut Saba, one of the pottery artisans at the hamlet. According to Saba, Balinese pottery was sturdier because its body was thicker than the products of outside the region such as the pottery or earthenware bringing in from Lombok and Yogyakarta. Many Hindu communities living outside Bali or resettlement area ordered their products. “At certain times, we were overwhelmed to receive the order of pottery in large quantities,” he said. Moreover, in the season of cremation ceremony, ngenteg linggih and so on, the order would be abundant. Therefore, the artisans consistently made pottery for ceremonial purposes, though also getting some orders from hotels and tourists. “It is said the activity of making pottery has been done by our ancestors since the days of kingdom period,” he explained. Formerly, almost all the residents at the hamlet were deeply involved in the profession as pottery craftsmen. Basang Tamiang hamlet is quite cool because it is nestled in isolated location. In the west, it borders with Cepaka hamlet and Uma Anyar hamlet, Anggungan village in the east, while in the north and south is the overlay of green rice fields. “Among the 177 families having profession as pottery makers in the past, today only 70 families still survive and continue to get involved in the profession,” he added. F1 title rivals should be wary of Red Bull
LONDON - Formula One title rivals Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel should both be wary of resurgent Red Bull after Max Verstappen’s victory in Malaysia at the weekend. While the Dutch 20-year-old and his Australian team mate Daniel Ricciardo are not championship contenders, they could yet be kingmakers. How they fare in the remaining five races may play a big part in determining whether the drivers’ crown ends up at Mercedes or Ferrari, even if Hamilton looks the clear favourite. With the Briton now 34 points ahead of Ferrari rival Vettel and 125 points left to be won, any further success for Red Bull would help tilt the title towards Hamilton unless he suffers misfortune. Hamilton is almost at the point where a string of second places
would be enough for him to be world champion for a fourth time, even if Vettel were to finish first in every remaining race. Assuming Hamilton keeps up his impressive run of 20 successive scoring finishes, Vettel needs to win repeatedly and be supported by team mate Kimi Raikkonen. Even then, three Ferrari one-two finishes in succession would still see Hamilton lead the championship into the penultimate round if he finishes
third every time. Were Verstappen and Ricciardo to become the filling in a red and silver sandwich, finishing behind the two Ferraris but ahead of the Mercedes pair, then that would change everything. That may just be wishful thinking on the part of Ferrari fans stunned by their team’s recent implosion -- both drivers colliding at the start in Singapore and then handicapped by power unit problems in Malaysia.
Few will need reminding that Hamilton has won the U.S. Grand Prix, a race yet to come, five times in the past six years and ended 2016 with four wins in a row. Yet Mercedes, winners of nine out of 15 races so far this year, are alert to the danger. “Probably if you look at the real pace today, it would have been P5 (fifth place). And that is worrisome,” team boss Toto Wolff said after Hamilton finished second without ever challenging Verstappen. “On paper the Ferrari is the fastest car, followed by the Red Bull and then us,” the Austrian had observed after qualifying.
Had Raikkonen lined up in second place in Malaysia, rather than retiring before the start, and Vettel not been sidelined in qualifying, there is every chance that Ferrari and Red Bull could have kept Hamilton off the podium. “There are some real big problems that I can’t really explain to you,” Hamilton said after a race that saw team mate Valtteri Bottas, with a package of supposed improvements, finish only fifth. “I don’t know which one of these next races is going to be good for us, which races are not, but we’ll do everything we can to try and stay ahead.” (rtr)

ANDORRA - Australian MotoGP rider Jack Miller will miss this month’s Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi after breaking his right leg in a training accident, his Marc VDS Honda team said on Monday. Miller fractured the top of the tibia when he put his foot down to prevent a slow-speed crash while training on a trials bike near his European base in Andorra last Friday, the team said in a statement. The 22-year-old Queenslander, who is leaving the Belgium-based team for Pramac Ducati at the end of the season, had surgery in Barcelona
on Saturday to insert a plate and eight screws. “Miller already has some mobility in the injured leg, but will head back to Andorra today to start an intense program of physiotherapy designed to get him back on the bike for the Australian Grand Prix,” the non-works team added. The Australian round at Phillip Island near Melbourne is on Oct. 22, the weekend after Japan. “Obviously I’m both disappointed and frustrated to have to sit out the Japanese Grand Prix through an injury sustained while training, especially as it wasn’t even a crash,”
said Miller. Miller, winner in the Netherlands last year but currently 12th in the championship, is the third rider to suffer injuries away from the racetrack in recent weeks. Italian Valentino Rossi, a ninetimes world champion, broke his right leg while training on an off-road bike at the end of August while Britain’s Cal Crutchlow needed surgery after severing a tendon while cutting cheese at home. Argentina’s puzzle - great players, but misfiring team
Argentina have reached three major finals in three years but the team who came so close to winning the 2014 World Cup face crunch games against Peru and Ecuador that will determine if they miss out on the global showpiece event for the first time since 1970. Argentina desperately need to beat Peru at home on Oct. 5 and go to Ecuador for their final match five days later. They lie fifth in the 10-team South American group, just below Peru on goal difference. “Now it’s gotten complicated,” coach Jorge Sampaoli said after they drew their last match at home to Venezuela. “It’s tight.” The top four teams qualify automatically for next year’s tournament in Russia and the fifth-placed side play New Zealand in a two-legged playoff for an additional spot. Former Chile and Seville coach Sampaoli took over four months ago with the sole task of getting what is arguably the world’s greatest collection of attacking talent to Russia. The problem, however, has been how to get the best out of it. Argentina have so many options in midfield and up front that players such as Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain and Javier Pastore are not automatic choices. Higuain, who played in nine of Argentina’s first 13
qualifiers, was dropped from the last two squads and Aguero, who will miss the next two games through injury, has started five of the last six on the bench. The players chosen have struggled to reproduce their club form at international level, with Lionel Messi and Paulo Dybala among those who have been less than influential when wearing the blue and white stripes. Argentina lost at home to Ecuador and Paraguay and failed to beat Venezuela, a team with just one win from 16 games, both home and away. They have scored only 16 goals, with only Bolivia managing fewer. The constant chopping and changing has prevented the side from finding a settled style of play. Sampaoli, who took over in June, has the credentials, having led Chile to the Copa America title in 2015. But his selections have also been inconsistent and Argentina have used 48 different players since the 2016 Copa America. Sampaoli this week recalled Fernando Gago after a two-year absence and called up two players who have never started a competitive international. No one could have imagined just how influential the former Corinthians coach would be but nine wins in 10 World Cup qualifiers are just reward for a return to the form that won them a record five World Cup titles. “There is no questioning the enormous quality of Brazil’s players, Tite and backroom staff,” the normally cautious former World Cup winner Tostao wrote before the final two qualifiers against Bolivia and Chile. “The team is ready.” Tite retained several players who had misfired under Luiz Felipe Scolari during the 2014 World Cup and his successor Dunga but he transformed their front line with the introduction of attack-minded youngsters Philippe Coutinho and Gabriel Jesus. In midfield he recalled Paulinho and Renato Augusto, his former charges at Corinthians. With Real Madrid’s Casemiro an automatic choice to anchor the team and Neymar still the undisputed talisman, the side is settled and there are no major
disagreements over the first 11 for the first time in years. Tite’s task between now and next June is mostly deciding who will support those leading men. The problem, if there is one, comes with Brazil’s almost customary over-confidence. They are the only side to play in every World Cup and even after their 7-1 hammering by Germany in the 2014 semi-finals on home soil, they believe they are special. Just as in 2006, when Brazil sailed through the qualifiers with players like Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Ronaldinho and Adriano, they go to Russia as one of the clear favourites. But Brazil were knocked out at the quarter-final stage by France and over confidence was one of the reasons cited. Tite is a master of playing down expectations and - crucially in a nation that famously has 200 million coaches – he commands the respect of both players and press. Smaller Premier League clubs to argue for balance in TV cash split MANCHESTER - The Premier League’s 20 clubs meet on Wednesday with the thorny issue of television rights cash distribution up for discussion as the big clubs seek more of the revenue from foreign deals. The most commercially successful league in the world currently splits its TV revenues from international deals equally among all clubs. Last season each club received around 39 million pounds ($51.7 million) from overseas television deals. The plan, leaked to British media, foresees 35 percent of the foreign revenue being split according to league position - so-called merit payments. A two-thirds majority, 14 clubs, would need to vote for any change and while the smaller ones have opted not to make their opposition public, one official noted that “Turkeys don’t usually vote for Christmas”. The issue has been simmering for years and former Liverpool CEO Ian Ayre has led calls for clubs to be able to sell their foreign rights on an individual basis which would allow the big ones to cash in more on their global marketability. That is not on the table on Wednesday but the smaller clubs fear that ending equal payments could lead to greater inequality down the line. Football finance expert Rob Wilson of Sheffield Hallam University believes the relatively equal distribution of revenue helps make the Premier League the most
competitive in Europe. “All the data we have on European leagues has the Premier League coming out top in terms of competitive balance. It is not an equal distribution system but it is a relatively equal one,” he told Reuters. “It means the smaller clubs can invest in the transfer market and then can compete against the top six and put a good game on, there is a spectacle there and that is what the broadcasting companies pay for. If I am brutal the top clubs have forgotten about that,” he said. The British revenue, from deals with Sky Sports and BT Sports, is not entirely distributed on equal basis. According to the league’s figures, 706 million pounds was split evenly among the clubs last season while the remaining 815 million was handed out in facility fees which take into account the amount of times a team is shown live on television while merit payments reward a club’s final position in the league. Smaller Premier League clubs to argue for balance in TV cash split MANCHESTER - The Premier League’s 20 clubs meet on Wednesday with the thorny issue of television rights cash distribution up for discussion as the big clubs seek more of the revenue from foreign deals. The most commercially successful league in the world currently splits its TV revenues from international deals equally among all clubs. Last season each club received around 39 million pounds ($51.7 million) from overseas television deals. The plan, leaked to British media, foresees 35 percent of the foreign revenue being split according to league position - so-called merit payments. A two-thirds majority, 14 clubs, would need to vote for any change and while the smaller ones have opted not to make their opposition public, one official noted that “Turkeys don’t usually vote for Christmas”. The issue has been simmering for years and former Liverpool CEO Ian Ayre has led calls for clubs to be able to sell their foreign rights on an individual basis which would allow the big ones to cash in more on their global marketability. That is not on the table on Wednesday but the smaller clubs fear that ending equal payments could lead to greater inequality down the line. Football finance expert Rob Wilson of Sheffield Hallam University believes the relatively equal distribution of revenue helps make the Premier League the most
competitive in Europe. “All the data we have on European leagues has the Premier League coming out top in terms of competitive balance. It is not an equal distribution system but it is a relatively equal one,” he told Reuters. “It means the smaller clubs can invest in the transfer market and then can compete against the top six and put a good game on, there is a spectacle there and that is what the broadcasting companies pay for. If I am brutal the top clubs have forgotten about that,” he said. The British revenue, from deals with Sky Sports and BT Sports, is not entirely distributed on equal basis. According to the league’s figures, 706 million pounds was split evenly among the clubs last season while the remaining 815 million was handed out in facility fees which take into account the amount of times a team is shown live on television while merit payments reward a club’s final position in the league. Basang Tamiang hamlet, a hub of pottery artisans
MANGUPURA - If you are a hobbyist of objects made from clay, simply come to Basang Tamiang hamlet. The territory belongs to Kapal village, Mengwi – Badung or about 15 km from Denpasar City is the central production of pottery. Even, the craft production of the community serves as the main support to pottery shops existing at Kapal village. Making pottery poses an activity carried out by most population at the hamlet inherited from generation to generation. Pottery products made are mostly in the form of ritual paraphernalia used by Hindu community. Among them, there are drinking earthenware, holy water container, earthenware vessel, plate and tray. However, in harmony with the growing demand of tourism sector, the hamlet also produces garden lamp, perforated coins and various dishes. Aside from supplying shop orders at Kapal village, local artisans also meet the demand of general public coming in person to them. For this category, the orders usually come from local people of Kapal, other Balinese people and those living outside Bali (resettlement area). Hotels also place direct order for their pottery needs such as lampshades, satay roasting pot and large size flower pots. Distinctiveness of the pottery products of Basang Tamiang compared to the others is in terms of the design where it is neutral, without finishing, thicker and applying red brick color. “Local buyers and travelers prefer Balinese earthenware pottery to products of outside the region such as Lombok pottery,” said I Ketut Saba, one of the pottery artisans at the hamlet. According to Saba, Balinese pottery was sturdier because its body was thicker than the products of outside the region such as the pottery or earthenware bringing in from Lombok and Yogyakarta. Many Hindu communities living outside Bali or resettlement area ordered their products. “At certain times, we were overwhelmed to receive the order of pottery in large quantities,” he said. Moreover, in the season of cremation ceremony, ngenteg linggih and so on, the order would be abundant. Therefore, the artisans consistently made pottery for ceremonial purposes, though also getting some orders from hotels and tourists. “It is said the activity of making pottery has been done by our ancestors since the days of kingdom period,” he explained. Formerly, almost all the residents at the hamlet were deeply involved in the profession as pottery craftsmen. Basang Tamiang hamlet is quite cool because it is nestled in isolated location. In the west, it borders with Cepaka hamlet and Uma Anyar hamlet, Anggungan village in the east, while in the north and south is the overlay of green rice fields. “Among the 177 families having profession as pottery makers in the past, today only 70 families still survive and continue to get involved in the profession,” he added. LONDON - Formula One title rivals Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel should both be wary of resurgent Red Bull after Max Verstappen’s victory in Malaysia at the weekend. While the Dutch 20-year-old and his Australian team mate Daniel Ricciardo are not championship contenders, they could yet be kingmakers. How they fare in the remaining five races may play a big part in determining whether the drivers’ crown ends up at Mercedes or Ferrari, even if Hamilton looks the clear favourite. With the Briton now 34 points ahead of Ferrari rival Vettel and 125 points left to be won, any further success for Red Bull would help tilt the title towards Hamilton unless he suffers misfortune. Hamilton is almost at the point where a string of second places
would be enough for him to be world champion for a fourth time, even if Vettel were to finish first in every remaining race. Assuming Hamilton keeps up his impressive run of 20 successive scoring finishes, Vettel needs to win repeatedly and be supported by team mate Kimi Raikkonen. Even then, three Ferrari one-two finishes in succession would still see Hamilton lead the championship into the penultimate round if he finishes
third every time. Were Verstappen and Ricciardo to become the filling in a red and silver sandwich, finishing behind the two Ferraris but ahead of the Mercedes pair, then that would change everything. That may just be wishful thinking on the part of Ferrari fans stunned by their team’s recent implosion -- both drivers colliding at the start in Singapore and then handicapped by power unit problems in Malaysia.
Few will need reminding that Hamilton has won the U.S. Grand Prix, a race yet to come, five times in the past six years and ended 2016 with four wins in a row. Yet Mercedes, winners of nine out of 15 races so far this year, are alert to the danger. “Probably if you look at the real pace today, it would have been P5 (fifth place). And that is worrisome,” team boss Toto Wolff said after Hamilton finished second without ever challenging Verstappen. “On paper the Ferrari is the fastest car, followed by the Red Bull and then us,” the Austrian had observed after qualifying.
Had Raikkonen lined up in second place in Malaysia, rather than retiring before the start, and Vettel not been sidelined in qualifying, there is every chance that Ferrari and Red Bull could have kept Hamilton off the podium. “There are some real big problems that I can’t really explain to you,” Hamilton said after a race that saw team mate Valtteri Bottas, with a package of supposed improvements, finish only fifth. “I don’t know which one of these next races is going to be good for us, which races are not, but we’ll do everything we can to try and stay ahead.” (rtr)

ANDORRA - Australian MotoGP rider Jack Miller will miss this month’s Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi after breaking his right leg in a training accident, his Marc VDS Honda team said on Monday. Miller fractured the top of the tibia when he put his foot down to prevent a slow-speed crash while training on a trials bike near his European base in Andorra last Friday, the team said in a statement. The 22-year-old Queenslander, who is leaving the Belgium-based team for Pramac Ducati at the end of the season, had surgery in Barcelona
on Saturday to insert a plate and eight screws. “Miller already has some mobility in the injured leg, but will head back to Andorra today to start an intense program of physiotherapy designed to get him back on the bike for the Australian Grand Prix,” the non-works team added. The Australian round at Phillip Island near Melbourne is on Oct. 22, the weekend after Japan. “Obviously I’m both disappointed and frustrated to have to sit out the Japanese Grand Prix through an injury sustained while training, especially as it wasn’t even a crash,”
said Miller. Miller, winner in the Netherlands last year but currently 12th in the championship, is the third rider to suffer injuries away from the racetrack in recent weeks. Italian Valentino Rossi, a ninetimes world champion, broke his right leg while training on an off-road bike at the end of August while Britain’s Cal Crutchlow needed surgery after severing a tendon while cutting cheese at home. Lone gunman kills 59, injures hundreds, in Las Vegas concert attack
LAS VEGAS - A retiree armed with multiple assault rifles strafed an outdoor country music festival in Las Vegas from a high-rise hotel window on Sunday, slaughtering at least 59 people before killing himself in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. The barrage of gunfire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel into a crowd of 22,000 people came in extended bursts that lasted several minutes, as throngs of terrified music fans cowered desperately on the open ground, hemmed in by fellow concert-goers, while others at the edge tried to flee. More than 525 people were injured - some by gunfire or shrapnel, some trampled - in the pandemonium adjacent to the Las Vegas Strip as police scrambled to locate the assailant. Police identified the gunman as Stephen Paddock, 64, who lived in a retirement community in Mesquite, Nevada. Authorities said they believed he acted alone, although his motive was unknown. The Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for the massacre, but U.S. officials said there was no evidence to support the claim. At least a dozen people were in critical condition at University Medical Center in Las Vegas, where the most seriously injured victims were taken, a spokes-

The distirct of Karangasem is relatively far from the intial danger zone and strangely this new list does not include Selat Village although the original map clearly indicates that Selat Village lies in the danger zone. Naturally residents of Selat in particular have been confused about what this means. “This confusion is to to misinterpretations of the contents of the map. The color red represents KBR III, pink KRB II and yellow KBR I. These are intended to confirm the relative danger although they are all are inside the general danger zone. The focus remains on the entire danger zone but then people can look at the colors to better understand”, said a BNPB official on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 2) who requested anonymity. So, in order to determine which villages fall into the disaster-prone area, the first thing to be considered whether the village falls into the radius of the danger zone. However, when looking at details of the area, the colors need to be taken into account to confirm the level of risk. When looking at the danger zone marked with a thick dotted line on the map, we can see that the town of Amplapura for example is actually within the safe zone for now. It does not fall into the danger zone. The yellow color on the map where the town of Amlapura lies is included as a disaster-prone area I. However, it should be underlined that the danger zone still needs to be
considered. “ The town of Amlapura is only under threat in the case that there is an eruption followed by rains. If it does not rain then residents of Amlapura have plenty of time to deal with the disaster. Residents of Amlapura should stay home instead of joining the other evacuees”, said the source. Indonesia encourages Asian parliament to resolve Rohingya crisis
JAKARTA - The delegation of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has encouraged the Asian Parliament to support efforts to resolve the humanitarian crisis in Rakhine State, Myanmar. The statement was delivered by the Indonesian delegation at the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Oct 2 and 3, 2017, according to a statement from the chairman of the Indonesian delegation, Rofi Munawar, received by ANTARA here on Tuesday. According to him, the meeting discussed 24 drafts of resolution that highlighted various issues. Rofi explained that the meeting in Cambodia was very strategic, especially to confirm Indonesias stance regarding various issues in Asia, including the Rohingya crisis. “The Indonesian delegation is here to emphasize the country’s stance over many issues, including the humanitarian crisis in Rakhine State,” the politician from the Social Justice Party (PKS) noted. Rofi remarked that Indonesia, along with the Turkish and Iranian delegations, fully supported the discussion of the resolution on Rohingya issues. Indonesia
itself has proposed several strategic points in the resolution, he added. “The Indonesian delegation proposed the Formula 4+1 to be included in the drafts. We hope that the formula can be a consensus of the Asian Parliament to resolve the humanitarian crisis in Rakhine,” Rofi asserted. Furthermore, he explained that Indonesia also emphasized that the solution to Rohingya crisis should be fundamental and comprehensive. “We may focus on the emergency of humanitarian aid, but we should not forget the root of the problem. The Formula 4+1 proposed by Indonesia calls on the Myanmar government to restore stability and security; conduct maximum restraint and non-violence acts; protect all persons residing in Rakhine, regardless of race and religion; and open access to humanitarian aid. Some restaurant operators, including Royal Holdings Co Ltd and McDonald’s Japan, have begun moving away from 24-hour operations, but that is far from the preferred option for companies in an industry that prides itself on offering convenience and service at all hours of the day. More than 80% of companies surveyed in a Reuters poll in June reported that they expected labour shortages would force them to re-
strict the number of services they can offer over the next several years. Some efforts to expand the labour force are finding corporate thinking has only changed so much. This March, human resources firm Fullcast Holdings Co Ltd set up a recruitment agency aimed at Japan’s over 60s and, while almost 2,000 retirees have registered, many companies are not able to accommodate them, says Fullcast Senior Works President Yasuhiro Sumi. “If there were jobs that met their needs in terms of things like distance from home, job type and working hours there are lots of employable people,” he said. Many companies remain hesitant to spend their record cash piles on raising wages, in part because they are unable to pass on costs to their customers who are accustomed to nearly two decades of mostly falling prices. “It seems that deepening labour shortages are not resulting in higher prices that reflect rises in wage and labour costs,” says Hideo Kumano, chief economist at Daiichi Life Research Institute. And Japan’s largest parcel deliver company, Yamato Holdings Co, this month increased home delivery prices by around 15 percent, the first such rise in almost three decades. Other delivery firms have quickly followed suit. Yamato become a poster child for Japan’s labour crunch after it booked billions of yen in charges to provide backpay to delivery drivers who had been overworked and underpaid. “We have confronted the deterioration in working conditions for our front line staff,” Yamato Holdings President Masaki Yamauchi told reporters last week. The company has promised to hire 10,000 new delivery staff by the end of financial 2019 to ease the strain on the 55,000 full-time drivers, who will have their overtime reduced. The new staff will be mainly hired from among those who already work for the company as outside contractors, the company says. On Sunday, billionaire founder of fashion retailer Start Today Co Ltd Yusaku Maezawa tweeted that shoppers on his Zozotown fashion site will be able to choose how much to pay for delivery. “If this led to a sharing of feelings between the carrier and the recipient I think it would be lovely,” Maezawa tweeted. Apuan is also home to several formidable contemporary painters, all of who have developed their own distinct style of painting while remaining nonetheless rooted in or strongly influenced by Balinese traditions, whether aesthetically or philosophically. Wayan Sumerta is one of these painters and spends a better part of his time serving as Pemangku (priest) at Pura Puncak Padang Dewa. On October 1rst, Sumerta opened his solo exhibition entitled ‘Damai itu Indah’ (peace is beautiful) at Arma Museum’s gallery of contemporary art. For the occasion Arma founder Agung Rai,Ubud palace’s Tjorkorda Raka Kerthysasa, ISI Denpasar secretariat rector I Wayan Dana, Balinese dancer and Professor I Made Bandem and renown art writer Jean Couteau all spoke a few words about this unique painter and his works. Sumerta’s paintings speak volumes about his personal spiritual journey, the cultural environment in which he lives and his background as apprentice painter. Like many Balinese artists he did not especially set out to be an artist but was nonetheless bathed in the rich aesthetic heritage of this island. His paintings that combine personal, abstract, universal and inherited styles are an inspiration for the future of art on the island and harken peace for all through the power of beauty, explained the opening speakers. Like many Balinese painters, Sumerta did not set out to become a painter but was nonetheless bathed in the rich aesthetic heritage of Bali and unwittingly learned about painting from the people around him. Unlike many tradition Balinese painters however he was not taught to replicate the works of the master but instead was slowly influenced by the avant-guard works of his uncle renown painter Made Wianta who
reached well beyond the norms of traditional Balinese painting to create abstract, conceptual and other types of art works. As Wianta was experimenting with different techniques, his nephew Wayan Sumerta served as artisan colouring in the spaces of these early geometric works. It was not until many years later, after many spiritually challenging experiences that Sumerta started creating his own art works. The fact that Sumerta serves a priest in his home village is worth noting for although his art works certain speak the aesthetic language of optical art -with geometric patterns and contrasting colours creating visual vibrations, the strength of his works lies not in the optical effects that they produce alone, but rather in the deeper meaning that these vibrations speak of, particularly in the context of Balinese spirituality. The first painting that greets people as they enter the Damai Itu Indah exhibition shows the head of a barong and a butterfly that appear to be fragmenting into abstract geometric lines. As Sumeta explained: “this kind of represents my path as an artist, you see I am starting from the visual forms of Balinese culture, but the butterfly represents my own transformation and more generally the need for humans to reach beyond what they know in order to create new forms of the eternal. This eternal energy can take any form but I feel that simple geometric lines in contrasting colours create a visual vibration that points to this eternal energy without actually depicting it”.

Australian searchers say fruitless end is “unacceptable” in final report on MH370 mystery
SYDNEY - Australian authorities said they deeply regret not finding missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 and the ongoing mystery is “unacceptable,” in their final report on the unsuccessful search which was published on Tuesday.

MANGUPURA — The government of Badung through the local education agency has received hundreds of students who were evacuated from areas around Mount Agung. These students are scattered amongst a number of public elementary and junior high schools in the region of Badung now. Based on the latest data from the Badung education agency, there are currently a total of 570 elementary and junior high school students that have been evacuated to Badung. They are dispersed into every subdistrict in Badung in the following numbers: 33 elementary school students in Petang , 83 in Abiansemal, 73 in Mengwi, 37 in Kuta and 85 in South Kuta. The number of junior high school students are: 11
in Petang 63 in Abiansemal, 39 in Mengwi 45 37 in North Kuta and 53 in South Kuta. There are also private school students now attending school in Badung. There is 1 junior high student at SMP Parama Dipta, 4 at SMP Swastika, 2 at SMP Widya Brata, 1 at SMPK Harapan, 1 at SMPK Thomas Aquino, 2 at SMP Ngurah Rai Kerobokan, 2 at SMP Nusa Dua (2 students), and 3
evacuated students at SMP Dwijendra Bualu. “So far, these numbers do not include data for elementary school students in North Kuta as we awaiting the report of their technical unit. We expect the numbers to continue to increase overall however”, said the Division Head of Basic Education at the Badung Education Agency, I Made Mandi, on Sunday (Oct. 1).
Made Mandi added that schools in Badung will continue to make room for students who have been evacuated. Parents are advised to try to find the closest school to wherever they have been evacuated to. Head of the Badung Education Agency, I Ketut Widia Astika, reiterated that he had instructed to all technical units across Badung to facilitate the process of accepting students who have been evacuated from areas near Mount Agung so as to lighten the burden of the situation. “We recommend that school
children who have been evacuated be placed in schools as close as possible to where they are now living”, he advised. The number of students per class will also be adjusted according to conditions caused by the evacuations, explained this bureaucrat from Kerobokan. Astika added that students can use the uniform form their original schools or even wear t-shirts given that this is an emergency situation. “ Essentially students should not be forced to wear a particular uniform, whatever clothes are available to them are fine” he said. “The reasons for the loss of MH370 cannot be established with certainty until the aircraft is found,” the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said in the report. “It is almost inconceivable and certainly societally unacceptable in the modern aviation era...for a large commercial aircraft to be missing and for the world not to know with certainty what became of the aircraft and those on board.” The disappearance of the Boeing 777 on March 8, 2014, with 239 people on board, on a flight to Beijing from the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur, has become one of the world’s greatest aviation mysteries. It is thought to have been diverted thousands of miles off course out over the southern Indian Ocean before crashing off the coast of Western Australia. Australia, which led the underwater hunt, and Malaysia and China called off a A$200 million ($160 million) search for the plane in January after finding nothing, despite the protests of families of those onboard. Australia’s main scientific agency said in August it believes with “unprecedented precision and certainty” that the plane crashed northeast of the search zone. But those findings were dismissed by Aus-
tralia’s government at the time as not specific enough, and the search has not been re-opened. Doing so depends on finding credible, new evidence about the plane’s whereabouts. The ATSB report published on Tuesday detailed the unsuccessful 1,046-day hunt for the plane, above and below the surface of the Indian Ocean, and scientific analyses of satellite pictures, sea currents and even barnacles found clinging to a piece of the plane found on Reunion Island. “The understanding of where MH370 may be located is better now than it has ever been. The underwater search has eliminated most of the high probability areas,” the ATSB said. “We...deeply regret that we have not been able to locate the aircraft, nor those 239 souls on board that remain missing.” It recommends aircraft and aircraft equipment manufacturers investigate providing better methods of automated satellite tracking for planes if they encounter problems during flight in future. that the environment of the evacuation sites is certainly different that what the children are used to, which could have an impact on their psychological well being. Children may react by being difficult, by fighting with each other or by becoming withdrawn. In order to prevent such adverse reactions, measure need to be taken to provide calm to the children, keep them busy and make them happy. “ Children need to see strong adults around them”, he added. The role of parents is important in maintaining a sense of security for the children. Parents need to be calm and show that
they feel peaceful as an example for the children. In evacuation sites , it is also important for everyone to look out for one and other. Everyone should do their best to maintain a positive atmosphere. “ In hamlets special task forces can be established to maintain harmony and members of surrounding communities can also help in this regard”, he added. According to the data compiled as of 15:00, so far there are a total of 4, 812 children from Karangasem that have been evacuated to Klungung; 1,666 toddlers, 2,046 elementary school students and 1,100 junior high school students. TOKYO - Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, whose new party is challenging Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s ruling bloc in the Oct. 22 national election, said she would “100 percent” not run in the poll, the latest twist in a drama giving voters whiplash. Speculation has persisted that Koike, a former LDP member and defence minister, would resign to run for a seat in parliament needed to make a bid for the premiership. “I have been saying I will not run for the election from the beginning,” Koike said in an interview with the Yomiuri newspaper reported on Tuesday. “I’m 100 percent not running for the election.” If Koike does not personally contest this election, then analysts believe she would hope her party positions itself to win the next national poll, and that she gains a voter boost from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Abe announced the snap election last week in hopes his Liberal Dem-
ocratic Party-led coalition would keep its majority in parliament’s lower house, where it held a twothirds “super majority” before the chamber was dissolved. But Koike’s new “Party of Hope - launched just last week as a “reformist, conservative” alternative to Abe’s equally conservative LDP - has clouded the outlook amid signs voters are disillusioned with Abe after nearly five years in power. Meet FORPHEUS, the World’s First Robot Table Tennis Tutor
TOKYO - An advanced robot developed by Japanese electronics company Omron has recently been certified by Guinness World Records as the world’s first robot table tennis tutor. FORPHEUS (Future Omron Robotics Technology for Exploring Possibility of Harmonized Automation with Sinic Theoretics) used machine learning to asses the skills of a human player, adjust its game accordingly and provide tips to help opponents improve their technique.
Unveiled at the Ceatec electronics show in Japan in 2014, FORPHEUS has come a long way in the last three years, especially after developers made a breakthrough in artificial intelligence. Originally designed to showcase Omron’s
sensor technology, the table tennis-playing robot has now become a Guinness-certified tutor thanks to machine learning. It analyzes data like the human player’s movement, the speed of the ball and the trajectory to determine his opponent’s skill level with around 90% accuracy. FORPHEUS then uses this information to adjust its play style – slow and and easy for beginners, faster and more unpredictable for advanced players. FORPHEUS is equipped with two vision sensors that identify the movement of the ball, and one motion sensor that monitors the movement of the opponent. A controller analyses the speed of the ball at one thousands times per second, allowing to predict where it is going to land and react accordingly. The AI component can also determine the spot where the return from FORPHEUS will land with
an accuracy of withing 5 centimeters, and this is projected on a screen so that the human “students” can prepare and improve their game. The special net of FORPHEUS’ ping pong table also acts as a digital display, where the human players can see encouraging messages aimed to motivate them, like “Good job!” or “Hang in there!”, but also valuable tips aimed to help them step up their game. “At the moment it is a human who teaches a robot how to behave or teach,” said FORPHEUS developer Taku Oya. “But in the next 20 years it may be possible that a robot teaches a robot or a robot develops a robot.” That may sound sci-fi, but the idea is in line with what most experts believe will happen as artificial intelligence becomes more advanced. Instant noodles must be combined with other ingredients

Many instant noodle aids provided for refugees are feared to result in new problems for refugees. But apparently, so far there has been no scientific research that proves the hazards of instant noodles. Nevertheless, it needs to be balanced with other food ingredients. This was conveyed by clinical nutrition specialist of Sanglah Hospital, Syuma Adhy Awan, recently. Nutritionally, instant noodles contain carbohydrates, oil, MSG and sodium in the spices. “If having salty taste, there must be sodium content,” he said. Carbohydrates are source of energy. When talking about foods with good nutrition, it should contain carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals and water. Instant noodles contain carbohydrate. Additionally, the making of noodles must use eggs so that it also contains protein so do oil and fat. “However, nutritional composition of instant noodle does not match balanced nutrition.
Just imagine a pack of noodle contains 325-425 calories. It is the same as we eat a plate of food. The highest content is carbohydrate and sodium,” he said. Sodium use usually amounts to 2,000 mg-2,500 mg, while the sodium content in instant noodles is about 1,000 mg, so once eating instant noodle it means to have been half as much as normal use. Moreover, people consume instant noodles more than once. Since the nutritional content of instant noodle is not balanced, it needs to be got round. It can be done by adding vegetables, chicken meat or other food ingredients, so that the composition makes good nutrition. Consumption of noodles in the long term still reaps pros and cons. Some say that consumption of noodles in the long term can result in stomach cancer. But stomach cancer is actually caused by many factors. “We do not dare to say that noodle consumption in the long term can cause a disease because there is no conclusive evidence,” he said. So, it’s okay to consume instant noodles, but should not be used as a daily menu because fresh food is better. In addition, diverse food types are also highly recommended. Heating process of noodle also causes the water content to only reach 3-5 percent. The small pores cause noodles to
look shiny. “This becomes one of the viral issues saying that noodles use wax, but actually not,” he said. One of the habits of Indonesian people is to eat carbohydrates, and one of which comes from noodles. “But it is not the main thing and not the only source. Please also eat corn, potatoes or noodles, but must be diverse and has balanced nutrition,” he concluded. Considering instant noodles have expire date, it means that noodles contain preservatives. Nevertheless, there is a maximum dose of substances that may be used. It has been regulated by the National Agency of Food and Drug Control (BPOM). In principle, if BPOM has issued registration number, it means that the product is in compliance with Indonesian food safety standards. Sodium content in noodles has also been listed on the packaging. Moreover, the sodium content in the MSG is much higher than that of salt. So the use of MSG is less than the use of salt. Per one gram of salt, sodium content only reaches about 40 percent, while MSG contains up to 60 percent. The impact of long-term use of MSG also definitely exists. This donation is therefore very important for us”, said Bharata after expressing his gratitude. Transportation agency claims to have dealt with it
BANGLI - Complaints by local residents about the serious traffic congestion over the last few days in Culali, Batur, Kintamani has been responded to by the Head of the Bangli Transportation Agecncy, Gede Arta. The traffic caused by an increase in the number of trucks coming to and from the quarrying site here, said Arta has in fact been dealt with by his agency despite accusations of the contrary. Arta said that a number of officers had been deployed to keep traffic flowing on Culali road, but that they are not on duty all day.
The increased number of quarry trucks in Culali coiincides with the shutting down of quarries near Mt. Agung last week. When interviewed on Monday (Oct. 2), Gede Arta, said that although there was in fact an increase in traffic congestion in Culali road due to the increase in the number of trucks coming to and from the quarry site in Songan Villag, the traffic jams he said are not as bad as people have said. “ It is not true that traffic has come to a stand-still”, he explained. Bangli Transportation Agency, said Arta has already deployed a number of officers to oversee the flow of traffic using an ‘open-close system”, whereby vehicles from the upper area (Batur) are made to wait for the vehicles from the lower areas to come up. Parta explained that basic health services are payed for from the BNBP’s (disaster mitigation agency) budget. The problem, he said arises when evacuees need more serious medical attention – especially in the case of people who have neither KIS not BPJS insurance. This could become a problem in the long term, he added. Evacuees may suffer health problems that are not related to volcanic eruption, such as kidney problems, strokes of congenital defects. LOS ANGELES - Warner Bros. on Monday scaled back the world premiere for its sci-fi film “Blade Runner 2049” following the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history in which a gunman killed at least 59 people in Las Vegas.

Bollywood icon Aamir Khan says next film will be biggest yet SINGAPORE - Aamir Khan, the Bollywood superstar with a conscience, says his next movie about a small town teenage girl who uses the Internet to become a singing sensation will be much bigger than his last film, which was India’s highest grossing ever. Khan, 52, plays a sleazy music producer in the film “Secret Superstar” and says he is second lead to teenager Zaira Wasim, playing a schoolgirl who defies her conservative Muslim family to pursue her dream of a singing career. Khan’s last film “Dangal”, or wrestling pit, was based on the true story of a former wrestler who trains two of his daughters to become champions in the sport. It was the highest grossing movie for Bollywood, as India’s Hindi film industry is known, and was powered by huge collections in China. “While both are about the empowerment of the girl child, I feel it (Secret
Superstar) is a much bigger film,” Khan said in an interview in Singapore ahead of the movie’s release later this month. He and his wife have produced the film. “While Dangal was about the dream of a father which a daughter fulfils, this is about the hopes and aspirations of a 14-year-old girl from a small town in India. I don’t know what the box office will be but it’s a bigger film than Dangal in what it’s trying to say.” Three of Khan’s films are in Bollywood’s top four all-time hits. Besides Dangal, these include “PK”, in which he played an alien dealing with religious divisions in India, and “3 Idiots”, about the frailties in India’s education system. All three have also done well in China, and Khan said he was “very happy with the type of relationship that’s building between me and my audience in this part of the world with each film”.
He also produced and acted in a popular television documentary series on social ills in India called “Satyameva Jayate”, or Truth Alone Triumphs. That series led him to set up a nonprofit to work on a project to ease the shortage of water in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, he said. Despite the social messages in his movies, Khan said he has no desire to become politician, as some other Bollywood stars have. “The desire in me to contribute back to society is something I can do very well in the field that I am in,” he said. “I don’t have to join politics. That’s an area I don’t ever want to go into.” Khan, who belongs to India’s Muslim minority, was embroiled in controversy two years ago when he said his Hindu wife had asked him if they should move out of India over concerns about insecurity. The determination of disaster-prone areas (KRB) in the case of an eruption of Mt. Agung has given way to confusion. Although the matter has been discussed for some time now, there is still no clear agreement about which areas should be included and which ones should not. The confusion has arisen because of discrepancies between the determination of KBR areas according to the Governor of Bali, the BNPB and The BPBD particularly with regards to the danger zones that consists of KBR III (6 km from the top of Mt. Agung and KBR II (9km fmor the top) and KBR I (12 km form the top). Initial the threat of the eruption of Mt. Agung was handled correctly with the dissemination of the data from the danger zones map and follow-up in the relevant villages. The danger zone includes all regions located within 12 km of the peak of Mt. Agung and these areas have been the focus of attention. The radius of the danger zone has been determined based on the scientific analysis conducted by the Center for Volcanology
and Geological Hazard Mitigation, that has taken into account larval flow, hot cloud bursts and dispersement of incandescent rock matter according to the last eruption in 1963. The Volcanology Center issued a new map confirming the danger zone with thick lines on the map. Vulnerable areas are focused within a 9 km radius form the peak of Mt. Agung and extend southwestward, southward, southeastward, northeastward and
northward as far as 12 km from the peak of the mountain.
