Nicole Kidman reveals her deep depression Over a decade later, details are still scarce, but in a new interview, Kidman – now happily remarried to Keith Urban – talks a little bit more about her failed first union, and sets the record straight about any involvement she may have had in Cruise’s divorce from Katie Holmes. For the 20th anniversary of the Australian magazine WHO, Kidman talks about her last two decades as a Hollywood star, including her headline-making marriage to Cruise. Noting that she “married really fast and young,” the 45-year-old actress – who reportedly had issues with Cruise over religion (she was raised Catholic, he’s the most famous Scientologist) – said they had a “fantastic marriage for a long period,” calling it a “fantastic decade.” Their eventual split, which was a bitter one (she was pregnant when he filed for divorce and later suffered a miscarriage), took a toll on her. “When it didn’t work out, I had to really dig deep and find my way through depression,” Kidman said, referring to that period of her life as the “loneliest, loneliest existence.” However she doesn’t dwell on it, noting, “I have no regrets about any of it. It was all about growing up … I wish all of the people that have been involved in my life well, because it’s very important to me to be in a place of forgiveness and love.” Another reason to remain upbeat? Her marriage to Cruise brought her two children. Although Kidman is rarely seen with adopted kids Bella, 19, and 17-year-old Connor – they live with their father, and Kidman has said that they call her “Nicole” instead of mom – she says she cherishes the relationship she does have with them. “All of my children are highlights of my life,” said Kidman, who also has daughters Sunday, 4, and Faith, 1,

This was done based on accused lawyer’s and Dutch Consulate request as the prison there is not making accused comfortable as Head of Buleleng Police Public Relation, APC I Nyoman Widastra, confirmed. Connected to the harassment, Children Protection Board (LPA) Buleleng have come to Buleleng Police Headquarters in accompanying victims in the investigation process up to the trial. Head of the LPA, Made Cantiari, stated that it is worrying moreover victims were pupils and disturbing their studies. The first step done in
accompanying them was visiting victims’ houses at Kaliasem Village, Banjar (home visit) to absorb the two victims or their parents’ aspiration about the case that was reported. SEMARAPURA - Fishermen in Klungkung, precisely on Kusamba Beach, are really in a dilemma. Fish catch of fishermen on the beach drops. Though departing to catch fish at 03:00 a.m. and returning home at 11:00 a.m., dozens of fishermen are frustrated because none of the fish stuck in their nets. They are getting more confused because such situation has happened for a long time and there are no signs of ending. Abdul Halif, a Kusamba fisherman encountered by Bali Post on Wednesday (Oct 3) said that such situation in the ocean had happened for a long time, and this year was the worst. No one could predict when the catch of fishermen would turn normal again. The weather forecast and prediction when the fish catch returned to normal in the middle of the sea seemed no longer valid. What happened then was the fishing boat came and went every day without a single catch. If he got, it was very minimal where their fishing creel only contained about 10-20 fish. In normal circumstances, he added, in once departure they could bring home 200 fresh fish. At that moment, fishermen were really happy, though in the end the price also declined due to many fish supplies. “Now, the fish catch is minimal and the price is also rising to some IDR 5,500 per head,” he said. More than that, the capital of fishermen did not recover because the fish catch was minimal. Within once departure to sea and using fuel-saving engine the fishermen could spend 7
liters of fuel. However, when using outboard engine, they could spend 16 liters of fuel. It did not include the cost of the boat and engine maintenance. The lack of fish caught recently made local fishermen lazy to sail. Abdul Halif said that considering such amount of spending without fish catch made him really lazy. Within a week, he admitted to sail only for one or two times. He would sail if any fellow fishermen both at Kusamba and Nusa Penida who informed if there was fish catch. “Rather than continuing to lose out and coming home without fish every day, he prefers not to go to sea at all. There is no fish, especially when the waves are ferocious,” he said. Along the Kusamba Beach, he said, there were formerly about 200 active fishermen. But lately, that number continued to decrease as lacking of fish catch. Some of them then provided a boat only, or worked as porter of building materials on boat crossing to Nusa Penida. Meanwhile, the others eventually collected mosaic stones. “Apparently, the fishermen make no regeneration. Formerly, there were many fishermen here. But now, their number continue to decrease,” he said. Another fisherman on Kusamba Beach, Ketut Seregeg, also expressed similar opinion last Wednesday. Sailing for hours amidst the ocean while facing ferocious waves, in fact no single fish stuck on his nets. From observation at location, it was seen that on the boat he had three sacks of net and several fishing reels were empty. (kmb31)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

PHILADELPHIA — Candy maker Hershey is vowing to use only certified cocoa for all of its chocolate products by 2020 and accelerate programs to help eliminate child labor in the cocoaproducing regions of West Africa. The company has come under fire from activists who said it was the only major chocolate producer in the world that hadn’t made a commitment to use certified cocoa. The central Pennsylvania company said Wednesday its plan to use certified cocoa — which is produced according to certain social, economic and environmental standards — should “significantly expand” the global supply of such cocoa, especially from West Africa, which produces about 70 percent of the world’s cocoa. Currently, certified cocoa accounts for less than 5 percent of the world’s cocoa supply, Hershey said. The company also vowed to continue its support of community development programs, such as village school construction, mobile phone farmer messaging, training in modern farming techniques and literacy and health programs. “Consistent with Hershey’s values, we are directly addressing the economic and social issues that impact West Africa’s two million cocoa farmers and families,” J.P. Bilbrey, company president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “I am confident that we can make a substantial difference in West Africa by 2020.” The company said independent auditors will verify the certified cocoa was produced by the highest labor, environmental and farming practices. “Fair trade” campaigns have led to agreements by chocolate makers to help clean up the cocoa supply chain, but activists and researchers say little has changed in the decade since the U.S. Congress passed the Harkin-Engel Protocol to introduce a “no child slavery” label for chocolate marketed in the United States. Some 1.8 million children, ages 5 to 17, work on cocoa farms in Ivory Coast and Ghana, according to the fourth annual report produced by Tulane University under contract to the U.S. Department of Labor to monitor progress in the protocol. The report says 40 percent of the 820,000 children working in cocoa in Ivory Coast are not enrolled in school, and only about 5 percent of the Ivorian children are paid for their work. Hershey said previously that it was working to improve lives in local communities, and the company this year said it would invest $10 million in West Africa to reduce child labor and improve the cocoa supply, mostly in Ghana and Ivory Coast.

LONDON - To millions of Britons, Jimmy Savile was a flamboyant cigar-chomping disc jockey, children’s TV presenter and dedicated charity fundraiser, instantly recognisable from his long blonde hair, eccentric clothing and flashy jewellery. But claims Savile, who died last year and was knighted by the queen for his charitable work, had sexually abused schoolgirls while working at the BBC have shattered his reputation and raised suggestions the statefunded broadcaster covered up allegations against one of its top entertainers. “I felt Jim had persuaded us all, audiences, fans, television professionals, even the pope, to create a myth around Saintly Jim so that he became untouchable,” said Esther Rantzen, a former BBC colleague and campaigner for child abuse victims. “One of the assaults had even been witnessed by the member of a television production team. So why was nothing done?” she wrote in an article for the Mail on Sunday newspaper. Savile was a household name
in Britain, firstly as a pioneering BBC radio DJ in the 1960s before later hosting prime-time pop and children’s TV shows, with his catchphrases becoming part of the national lexicon. When he died in October last year aged 84, his gold coffin went on public display and he was lauded as a “national treasure” who had raised millions of pounds for good causes. But that image was shattered by allegations made in a documentary to be broadcast on commercial TV on Wednesday. “Exposure: The Other Side of Jimmy Savile” claims he sexually abused underage girls and some 10 women have come forward to the media to say they were his victims. Some said the attacks occurred when they were as young as 12 and even took place on BBC premises.

The BBC has denied that and said its investigations unit would help police who have launched an inquiry into the claims. “A number of serious and disturbing allegations have been made over the past few days about the sexual abuse of teenage girls by Sir Jimmy Savile,” the BBC said in a statement. “Some of these allegations relate to activity on BBC premises in the 1960s and 70s. We are horrified by allegations that anything of this sort could have happened at the BBC - or have been carried out by anyone working for the BBC.”

DENPASAR - The term ‘international hospital’ is not just a name. A hospital capable of serving foreign patients and the entire staff can speak foreign languages does not necessarily mean if it has the right to bear a title of world class or internationally accredited hospital. Government of Indonesia through the Ministry of Health does not allow the use of the label ‘international’ for hospital that has not met international standards of quality. A world-class hospital should pass the standards, in this case the standards issued by the Joint Commission International (JCI). At the moment, there has been no single hospital in Bali bearing the status as JCI accredited hospital. It is only Sanglah Hospital that has undergone this accreditation and the results will be announced late December 2012. Chairman of the Indonesian Hospital Association (PERSI) of Bali, I Gede Wiryana Patra Jaya, doubling as Director of BROS when met on Wednesday (Oct 3) said that to meet the JCI standards, there were two aspects becoming the focus, namely service center and patient safety. “Service center is related to the service extended to patients, price certainty to management and regulation of its services. Then, patient safety is related to the actions giving priority to safety for hospitalized patients,” he explained. He explained that many people thought if the international class hospital was a special hospital charging expensively to foreign patients whereas the meaning of international class was the quality of service that had complied with the international standards which later on could be enjoyed by all walks of life. Bali as a tourist destination certainly became the target of capital owners to invest. One of them, they certainly wanted to establish a world-class hospital. According to Patra, the coming of a world-class hospital or internationally accredited hospital was surely inevitable. To that end, every hospital in Bali should be able to improve its quality. “As operator of a private hospital, we currently further strengthen a partnership with other private hospitals. If previously we worked independently, now we are working hand in hand. Though there are differences in rates, at least there are rate similarities of doctors and nurses,” said Patra. According to him, the assessment of JCI did not consider based on the complete and modern facilities but put more emphases on the correct use of facilities to patient. “For instance, Sanglah Hospital does not have an MRI, it will not be asked why did not have it but how is the flow of Sanglah Hospital to the patient so that the patient can get the service,” said Jaya Kusuma. Officials have denied Arroyo’s request to seek medical treatment abroad, saying she may not return to face the charges. Arroyo’s lawyer Anacleto Diaz said Thursday that the witnesses against her had no personal knowledge of the transactions of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office. The charges allege that money from the agency’s intelligence funds was diverted for personal gain from 2008 until Arroyo stepped down in 2010. ISLAMABAD — Lacking the necessary cash and manpower, Pakistan is struggling to stem the flow of millions of dollars in ancient Buddhist artifacts that looters dig up in the country’s northwest and smuggle to collectors around the world. The black market trade in smuggled antiquities is a global problem that some experts estimate is worth billions of dollars per year. The main targets are poor countries like Pakistan that possess a rich cultural heritage but don’t have the resources to protect it. The illicit excavations rob Pakistan of an important potential source of tourism revenue, as valuable icons are spirited out of the country, and destroy any chance for archaeologists to document the history of the sites. “We are facing a serious problem because Pakistan is a vast country, and we have very meager resources,” said Fazal Dad Kakar, head of the government’s department of archaeology and museums. “We have no manpower to watch the hundreds of Buddhist sites and monasteries in the country, most of which are located in isolated valleys.” Many of the sites are in the Swat Valley, a verdant, mountainous area in the northwest that was once part of Gandhara, an important Buddhist kingdom that stretched across modern-day Pakistan and Afghanistan more than 1,000 years ago. Police seized a large container filled with nearly 400 artifacts in the southern port city of Karachi in July that were being trucked north to be smuggled out of the country.
About 40 percent were found to be genuine, including nearly 100 Buddhist sculptures up to 1,800years-old worth millions of dollars, said Qasim Ali Qasim, director of archaeology and museums in southern Sindh province. There were effectively no restrictions on whisking Buddhist relics out of Pakistan’s northwest in the first few decades after the country achieved independence from Britain in 1947, said Malik Naveed, a former police chief of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where the Swat Valley is located. That changed in 1975 when the government passed a set of laws criminalizing the practice. But Kakar, the federal archaeology chief, said the laws are difficult to enforce given a lack of funds, and people who are caught rarely receive punishments severe enough to act as much of a deterrent. Police arrested several people connected to the seizure in Karachi in July, but they have yet to be formally charged. A Manhattan art dealer, Subhash Kapoor, is under arrest in neighboring India for allegedly smuggling millions of dollars in antiquities out of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan that he sold to museums and private collectors from his gallery in New York and online, according to
police investigators involved with the case. Rather than dig up Buddhist relics, some Pakistanis have focused on making replicas, such as the ones seized in Karachi, that they often try to pass off as the real thing — although this practice is also illegal in the country. Many operate covertly around the ancient Buddhist site of Taxila, a short drive from the capital, Islamabad. “I learned the practice from my fellow villagers in my childhood and can fake anything using cement, small stones, some colors and chemicals,” said Salahud Deen, who works out of his home in a village near Taxila. Locals who deal in real Buddhist artifacts they have stolen from sites in the northwest likely make much more money, but it’s almost nothing compared to what people higher up the food chain earn. Looters receive on average less than 1 percent of the final sale price of an item, while middlemen and dealers get the other 99 percent, according to the former head of the U.N. Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute, Sandro Calvani. Kakar, the federal archaeology chief, tried to stop Christie’s auction house in New York from selling a “fasting Buddha” from the 3rd or 4th century last year as well as dozens of other Buddhist relics he claimed were smuggled out of Pakistan illegally. Christie’s went ahead and sold the Buddha for nearly $4.5 million and has asked Pakistan to provide proof of its claims, the auction house said.

Ticket prices are plunging by about half, to 16,000 yen ($200) trips to the southwestern resort island of Okinawa or a 5,000 yen ($60) hop to Seoul. The airlines are not only out to woo Japanese away from regular leisure activities such as going to Disneyland or watching a movie. They are also out to convince the notoriously workaholic Japanese not to work so hard. They may revitalize Japan’s 3 trillion yen ($38 billion) aviation market — already the world’s third largest, comprising about 5.5 percent of global traffic and 11 percent of industry revenues — that critics say is untapped for its tremendous potential. Helping to drive the change is the expansion of two Tokyo airports, Haneda and Narita, which has opened up more landing slots for airlines. LONDON - Nine people who put up bail guarantees for Julian Assange argued in court on Wednesday they should not be forced to pay after the WikiLeaks founder sought refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London. Vaughan Smith - one of the nine, who between them put up 140,000 pounds ($225,000) - told Westminster Magistrates Court in London they were not to blame for Assange violating the terms of his bail. Assange was arrested on an extradition warrant and is wanted for questioning in Sweden over allegations of rape and sexual assault made by two former volunteers at WikiLeaks, the whistleblowing website which angered the United States by releasing thousands of U.S. diplomatic cables in 2010. He denies the allegations and says he had consensual sex with the women. He says he fears that if extradited to Sweden, he could then be transferred to the United States where he could face crimi-
nal charges punishable by death. Assange broke bail conditions when he entered the Ecuadorean embassy in June shortly after running out of legal options to avoid being sent to Sweden. A judge will deliver a ruling in the coming days on whether the bail sureties, pledged when Assange was released from detention in December 2010, must be collected. BELGRADE — Serbia’s police on Wednesday banned a Gay Pride march in Belgrade, citing security concerns but also complying with a request from Serbia’s Christian Orthodox church. Police said they were banning the march planned for Saturday because they feared a repeat of the violence in 2010, when right-wing groups attacked a Gay Pride event in Belgrade. That triggered day-long clashes with the police which left more than 100 people injured. Last year’s gay pride march also was banned by authorities. The current ban was announced after Patriarch Irinej, the head of Serbia’s Christian Orthodox church, urged the government to prevent Saturday’s march. In a statement, he said such a “parade of shame” would cast a “moral shadow” on Serbia — a conservative Balkan country whose gay population has faced threats and harassment. Allowing a Gay Pride march this year had been regarded by some as a test of Serbia’s pledge to respect human rights as it seeks European Union membership. That was clear in the reaction of European Parliament official Jelko Kacin, who called the ban a “political decision that questions the rule of law in Serbia.” Secretary-General Thorbjoern Jagland of the Council of Europe, the continent’s main human rights body, said he was “surprised and disappointed” that the pride event has been banned again. “Citizens should be able to exercise their rights of freedom of assembly and freedom of expression,” he said. “Serbia should be in a position to safeguard such an event, which is commonplace in modern democracies.” Amnesty International said the ban puts Serbia in breach of its own laws. “Serbia’s government is effectively going against its own legal and constitutional protections for basic rights such as freedom of expression and freedom of assembly to all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in Serbia,” said John Dalhuisen, the group’s director for Europe and Central Asia. JAKARTA - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has cut its economic growth forecast for Indonesia from 6.4 percent to 6.3 percent this year, in view of the economic slowdown in Asia. “Due to the impact of global economic conditions and the Asian economic slowdown, the Indonesian economy is expected to grow at a slightly slower pace,” ADB senior economist Edimon Ginting said here on Wednesday. “There is a decline in exports because the European crisis is showing no signs of abating. However, investment will increase thanks to the conducive business climate in Indonesia,” he added. “Besides, private and government investments will cover the shortfall from declining exports,” Edimon stated. “Investment will continue to grow until 2013 as the business community`s confidence in the domestic economy remains high,” he said. “The last survey made by UNCTAC (the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) shows improvement in foreign investors` perception of Indonesia. As an FDI destination,
Indonesia`s rank has improved from the sixth spot to the fourth spot next only to China, the United States and India,” Edimon pointed out. State forestry official Afan Absori says the tiger was being flown from Banda Aceh to a zoo on Java island on Tuesday along with a gibbon and two bearcats. He cited Garuda Indonesia airlines as saying the animals were removed from the plane’s cargo hold during a stop in Medan because of complaints from passengers about their smell. They were taken back to Banda Aceh, where officials found the tiger had died. Absori said an autopsy found it had a broken leg and facial injuries. The cause of the injuries was being investigated. Sumatran tigers are the most critically endangered tiger subspecies. About 400 remain, down from around 1,000 in the 1970s, because of forest destruction and poaching.

He said that the Bappenas could provide assistance for ministries and state institutions, if required. He added that the progress of the action plan implementation would be monitored nationally and would be made public. The Vice President said that the implementation of the Stranas PPK
was not a separate activity but was integrated into the national planning and budgeting process in respective institutions. Vice President Boediono asked the home affairs minister and his ranks and files to work out a regional action plan on the PPK as contained in article 5 of Presidential Decree No. 55/ 2012. He said that the Presidential Decree 55 / 2012 was issued as a consequence of the Indonesian government`s steps to ratify the UN Convention on Anti-Corruption 2003 with the issuance of Law No. 7/ 2006.

Brawn was also chief strategist at Ferrari when Schumacher and the Italian team became so dominant that the sport’s authorities made several rule changes to spice up the level of competition. “He’s the most courageous racing driver of the century,” Brawn said “And I feel very privileged to have worked with
Michael from the beginning.” Schumacher said he hasn’t decided what he will do after the season, saying he just wants to focus on the final six races. Players will get a warning the first time, then be fined $5,000 for a second violation. The fines increase to $10,000 for a third offense, $15,000 for a fourth and $30,000 the fifth time. The comeback has not lived up to expectations, with just one podium finish. “It’s without doubt that we did not achieve our goals to develop a world championship fighting car,” Schumacher said. “But it is also very clear I can be happy with my overall achievements.” Mercedes team boss Ross Brawn paid tribute to Schumacher. Brawn was also chief strategist at Ferrari when Schumacher and the Italian team became so dominant that the sport’s authorities made several rule changes to spice up the level of competition. “He’s the most courageous racing driver of the century,” Brawn said “And I feel very privileged to have worked with
Michael from the beginning.” Schumacher said he hasn’t decided what he will do after the season, saying he just wants to focus on the final six races. The NBA will penalize floppers this season, fining players for repeated violations of an act a league official said Wednesday has ‘’no place in our game.’’ Those exaggerated falls to the floor may fool the referees and fans during the game, but officials at league headquarters plan to take a look for themselves afterward. Players will get a warning the first time, then be fined $5,000 for a second violation. The fines increase to $10,000 for a third offense, $15,000 for a fourth and $30,000 the fifth time. Six or more could lead to a suspension. ‘’Flops have no place in our game -they either fool referees into calling undeserved fouls or fool fans into thinking the referees missed a foul call,’’ vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson said in a statement. ‘’Accordingly, both the Board of Governors and the competition committee felt strongly that any player who the league determines, following video review, to have committed a flop should - after a warning - be given an automatic penalty.’’ The players’ association plans to file a grievance with the league office and an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board, arguing that it should have been consulted first
before the new rules were implemented. ‘’The NBA is not permitted to unilaterally impose new economic discipline against the players without first bargaining with the union,’’ union executive director Billy Hunter said. ‘’We believe that any monetary penalty for an act of this type is inappropriate and without precedent in our sport or any other sport. We will bring appropriate legal action to challenge what is clearly a vague and arbitrary overreaction and overreach by the commissioner’s office.’’ However, a number of players expressed support for the policy. LONDON - Nine people who put up bail guarantees for Julian Assange argued in court on Wednesday they should not be forced to pay after the WikiLeaks founder sought refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London. Vaughan Smith - one of the nine, who between them put up 140,000 pounds ($225,000) - told Westminster Magistrates Court in London they were not to blame for Assange violating the terms of his bail. Assange was arrested on an extradition warrant and is wanted for questioning in Sweden over allegations of rape and sexual assault made by two former volunteers at WikiLeaks, the whistleblowing website which angered the United States by releasing thousands of U.S. diplomatic cables in 2010. He denies the allegations and says he had consensual sex with the women. He says he fears that if extradited to Sweden, he could then be transferred to the United States where he could face crimi-
nal charges punishable by death. Assange broke bail conditions when he entered the Ecuadorean embassy in June shortly after running out of legal options to avoid being sent to Sweden. A judge will deliver a ruling in the coming days on whether the bail sureties, pledged when Assange was released from detention in December 2010, must be collected. has secured sanctuary as a political refugee in a country with which Great Britain has an established and normal diplomatic relationship. How can this fact have no legal standing?” Smith said in court, reading from a statement prepared by the guarantors, five of whom were present for the hearing. Ecuador granted Assange asylum but he remains at the embassy and Britain says he will be arrested if he leaves the premises. The case has strained relations between Britain and Ecuador. BELGRADE — Serbia’s police on Wednesday banned a Gay Pride march in Belgrade, citing security concerns but also complying with a request from Serbia’s Christian Orthodox church. Police said they were banning the march planned for Saturday because they feared a repeat of the violence in 2010, when right-wing groups attacked a Gay Pride event in Belgrade. That triggered day-long clashes with the police which left more than 100 people injured. Last year’s gay pride march also was banned by authorities. The current ban was announced after Patriarch Irinej, the head of Serbia’s Christian Orthodox church, urged the government to prevent Saturday’s march. In a statement, he said such a “parade of shame” would cast a “moral shadow” on Serbia — a conservative Balkan country whose gay population has faced threats and harassment. Allowing a Gay Pride march this year had been regarded by some as a test of Serbia’s pledge to respect human rights as it seeks European Union membership. That was clear in the reaction of European Parliament official Jelko Kacin, who called the ban a “political decision that questions the rule of law in Serbia.” Secretary-General Thorbjoern Jagland of the Council of Europe, the continent’s main human rights body, said he was “surprised and disappointed” that the pride event has been banned again. “Citizens should be able to exercise their rights of freedom of assembly and freedom of expression,” he said. “Serbia should be in a position to safeguard such an event, which is commonplace in modern democracies.” Amnesty International said the ban puts Serbia in breach of its own laws. “Serbia’s government is effectively going against its own legal and constitutional protections for basic rights such as freedom of expression and freedom of assembly to all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in Serbia,” said John Dalhuisen, the group’s director for Europe and Central Asia. JAKARTA - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has cut its economic growth forecast for Indonesia from 6.4 percent to 6.3 percent this year, in view of the economic slowdown in Asia. “Due to the impact of global economic conditions and the Asian economic slowdown, the Indonesian economy is expected to grow at a slightly slower pace,” ADB senior economist Edimon Ginting said here on Wednesday. “There is a decline in exports because the European crisis is showing no signs of abating. However, investment will increase thanks to the conducive business climate in Indonesia,” he added. “Besides, private and government investments will cover the shortfall from declining exports,” Edimon stated. “Investment will continue to grow until 2013 as the business community`s confidence in the domestic economy remains high,” he said. “The last survey made by UNCTAC (the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) shows improvement in foreign investors` perception of Indonesia. They were taken back to Banda Aceh, where officials found the tiger had died. Absori said an autopsy found it had a broken leg and facial injuries. The cause of the injuries was being investigated. Sumatran tigers are the most critically endangered tiger subspecies. About 400 remain, down from around 1,000 in the 1970s, because of forest destruction and poaching.

Masato Yamaguchi, 22, said his friends had to run like mad when their AirAsia flight back to Tokyo from Okinawa was delayed, and they barely had time to catch the last bus. Ticket prices are plunging by about half, to 16,000 yen ($200) trips to the southwestern resort island of Okinawa or a 5,000 yen ($60) hop to Seoul. The airlines are not only out to woo Japanese away from regular leisure activities such as going to Disneyland or watching a movie. They are also out to convince the notoriously workaholic Japanese not to work so hard. They may revitalize Japan’s 3 trillion yen ($38 billion) aviation market — already the world’s third largest, comprising about 5.5 percent of global traffic and 11 percent of industry revenues — that critics say is untapped for its tremendous potential. Helping to drive the change is the expansion of two Tokyo airports, Haneda and Narita, which has opened up more landing slots for airlines. Officials have denied Arroyo’s request to seek medical treatment abroad, saying she may not return to face the charges. Arroyo’s lawyer Anacleto Diaz said Thursday that the witnesses against her had no personal knowledge of the transactions of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office. The charges allege that money from the agency’s intelligence funds was diverted for personal gain from 2008 until Arroyo stepped down in 2010. Information compiled in the Buleleng Public Works Agency on Wednesday (Oct 3) indicated that a total of 82 rivers were recorded in Buleleng. Of that number, only 32 rivers still flow water and serve as buffer of the agricultural irrigation. Meanwhile, the other 50 rivers do not function at all since the prolonged dry season occurs. The river flow no longer drains water from the upstream. They will just drain water in the upcoming rainy season. Pakistan struggles with smuggled Buddhist relics

ISLAMABAD — Lacking the necessary cash and manpower, Pakistan is struggling to stem the flow of millions of dollars in ancient Buddhist artifacts that looters dig up in the country’s northwest and smuggle to collectors around the world. The black market trade in smuggled antiquities is a global problem that some experts estimate is worth billions of dollars per year. The main targets are poor countries like Pakistan that possess a rich cultural heritage but don’t have the resources to protect it. The illicit excavations rob Pakistan of an important potential source of tourism revenue, as valuable icons are spirited out of the country, and destroy any chance for archaeologists to document the history of the sites. “We are facing a serious problem because Pakistan is a vast country, and we have very meager resources,” said Fazal Dad Kakar, head of the government’s department of archaeology and museums. “We have no manpower to watch the hundreds of Buddhist sites and monasteries in the country, most of which are located in isolated valleys.” Many of the sites are in the Swat Valley, a verdant, mountainous area in the northwest that was once part of Gandhara, an important Buddhist kingdom that stretched across modern-day Pakistan and Afghanistan more than 1,000 years ago. Police seized a large container filled with nearly 400 artifacts in the southern port city of Karachi in July that were being trucked north to be smuggled out of the country.
About 40 percent were found to be genuine, including nearly 100 Buddhist sculptures up to 1,800years-old worth millions of dollars, said Qasim Ali Qasim, director of archaeology and museums in southern Sindh province. There were effectively no restrictions on whisking Buddhist relics out of Pakistan’s northwest in the first few decades after the country achieved independence from Britain in 1947, said Malik Naveed, a former police chief of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where the Swat Valley is located. That changed in 1975 when the government passed a set of laws criminalizing the practice. But Kakar, the federal archaeology chief, said the laws are difficult to enforce given a lack of funds, and people who are caught rarely receive punishments severe enough to act as much of a deterrent. Police arrested several people connected to the seizure in Karachi in July, but they have yet to be formally charged. A Manhattan art dealer, Subhash Kapoor, is under arrest in neighboring India for allegedly smuggling millions of dollars in antiquities out of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan that he sold to museums and private collectors from his gallery in New York and online, according to
police investigators involved with the case. Rather than dig up Buddhist relics, some Pakistanis have focused on making replicas, such as the ones seized in Karachi, that they often try to pass off as the real thing — although this practice is also illegal in the country. Many operate covertly around the ancient Buddhist site of Taxila, a short drive from the capital, Islamabad. “I learned the practice from my fellow villagers in my childhood and can fake anything using cement, small stones, some colors and chemicals,” said Salahud Deen, who works out of his home in a village near Taxila. Locals who deal in real Buddhist artifacts they have stolen from sites in the northwest likely make much more money, but it’s almost nothing compared to what people higher up the food chain earn. Looters receive on average less than 1 percent of the final sale price of an item, while middlemen and dealers get the other 99 percent, according to the former head of the U.N. Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute, Sandro Calvani. Kakar, the federal archaeology chief, tried to stop Christie’s auction house in New York from selling a “fasting Buddha” from the 3rd or 4th century last year as well as dozens of other Buddhist relics he claimed were smuggled out of Pakistan illegally. Christie’s went ahead and sold the Buddha for nearly $4.5 million and has asked Pakistan to provide proof of its claims, the auction house said.

PHILADELPHIA — Candy maker Hershey is vowing to use only certified cocoa for all of its chocolate products by 2020 and accelerate programs to help eliminate child labor in the cocoaproducing regions of West Africa. The company has come under fire from activists who said it was the only major chocolate producer in the world that hadn’t made a commitment to use certified cocoa. The central Pennsylvania company said Wednesday its plan to use certified cocoa — which is produced according to certain social, economic and environmental standards — should “significantly expand” the global supply of such cocoa, especially from West Africa, which produces about 70 percent of the world’s cocoa. Currently, certified cocoa accounts for less than 5 percent of the world’s cocoa supply, Hershey said. The company also vowed to continue its support of community development programs, such as village school construction, mobile phone farmer messaging, training in modern farming techniques and literacy and health programs. “Consistent with Hershey’s values, we are directly addressing the economic and social issues that impact West Africa’s two million cocoa farmers and families,” J.P. Bilbrey, company president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “I am confident that we can make a substantial difference in West Africa by 2020.” The company said independent auditors will verify the certified cocoa was produced by the highest labor, environmental and farming practices. “Fair trade” campaigns have led to agreements by chocolate makers to help clean up the cocoa supply chain, but activists and researchers say little has changed in the decade since the U.S. Congress passed the Harkin-Engel Protocol to introduce a “no child slavery” label for chocolate marketed in the United States. Some 1.8 million children, ages 5 to 17, work on cocoa farms in Ivory Coast and Ghana, according to the fourth annual report produced by Tulane University under contract to the U.S. Department of Labor to monitor progress in the protocol. The report says 40 percent of the 820,000 children working in cocoa in Ivory Coast are not enrolled in school, and only about 5 percent of the Ivorian children are paid for their work. Hershey said previously that it was working to improve lives in local communities, and the company this year said it would invest $10 million in West Africa to reduce child labor and improve the cocoa supply, mostly in Ghana and Ivory Coast.

But claims Savile, who died last year and was knighted by the queen for his charitable work, had sexually abused schoolgirls while working at the BBC have shattered his reputation and raised suggestions the statefunded broadcaster covered up allegations against one of its top entertainers. “I felt Jim had persuaded us all, audiences, fans, television professionals, even the pope, to create a myth around Saintly Jim so that he became untouchable,” said Esther Rantzen, a former BBC colleague and campaigner for child abuse victims. “One of the assaults had even been witnessed by the member of a television production team. So why was nothing done?” she wrote in an article for the Mail on Sunday newspaper. Savile was a household name

Revelations that an investigation by Newsnight, the BBC’s flagship TV news show, were shelved last December led to claims bosses at the broadcaster knew about the allegations but kept quiet. The BBC has denied that and said its investigations unit would help police who have launched an inquiry into the claims. “A number of serious and disturbing allegations have been made over the past few days about the sexual abuse of teenage girls by Sir Jimmy Savile,” the BBC said in a statement. “Some of these allegations relate to activity on BBC premises in the 1960s and 70s. We are horrified by allegations that anything of this sort could have happened at the BBC - or have been carried out by anyone working for the BBC.”

DENPASAR - The term ‘international hospital’ is not just a name. A hospital capable of serving foreign patients and the entire staff can speak foreign languages does not necessarily mean if it has the right to bear a title of world class or internationally accredited hospital. Government of Indonesia through the Ministry of Health does not allow the use of the label ‘international’ for hospital that has not met international standards of quality. A world-class hospital should pass the standards, in this case the standards issued by the Joint Commission International (JCI). At the moment, there has been no single hospital in Bali bearing the status as JCI accredited hospital. It is only Sanglah Hospital that has undergone this accreditation and the results will be announced late December 2012. Chairman of the Indonesian Hospital Association (PERSI) of Bali, I Gede Wiryana Patra Jaya, doubling as Director of BROS when met on Wednesday (Oct 3) said that to meet the JCI standards, there were two aspects becoming the focus, namely service center and patient safety. “Service center is related to the service extended to patients, price certainty to management and regulation of its services. Then, patient safety is related to the actions giving priority to safety for hospitalized patients,” he explained. He explained that many people thought if the international class hospital was a special hospital charging expensively to foreign patients whereas the meaning of international class was the quality of service that had complied with the international standards which later on could be enjoyed by all walks of life. Bali as a tourist destination certainly became the target of capital owners to invest. One of them, they certainly wanted to establish a world-class hospital. According to Patra, the coming of a world-class hospital or internationally accredited hospital was surely inevitable. To that end, every hospital in Bali should be able to improve its quality. “As operator of a private hospital, we currently further strengthen a partnership with other private hospitals. If previously we worked independently, now we are working hand in hand. Though there are differences in rates, at least there are rate similarities of doctors and nurses,” said Patra. Aside from expanding the link of services, this measure was also meant to maintain in order the

Jaya Kusuma, when met last Wednesday explained there was no term ‘international hospital’ but ‘world class hospital.’ “The service in the world-class hospital has been recognized by JCI pursuant to the international standards,” he said. According to him, the assessment of JCI did not consider based on the complete and modern facilities but put more emphases on the correct use of facilities to patient. “For instance, Sanglah Hospital does not have an MRI, it will not be asked why did not have it but how is the flow of Sanglah Hospital to the patient so that the patient can get the service,” said Jaya Kusuma. They are getting more confused because such situation has happened for a long time and there are no signs of ending. Abdul Halif, a Kusamba fisherman encountered by Bali Post on Wednesday (Oct 3) said that such situation in the ocean had happened for a long time, and this year was the worst. No one could predict when the catch of fishermen would turn normal again. The weather forecast and prediction when the fish catch returned to normal in the middle of the sea seemed no longer valid. What happened then was the fishing boat came and went every day without a single catch. If he got, it was very minimal where their fishing creel only contained about 10-20 fish. In normal circumstances, he added, in once departure they could bring home 200 fresh fish. At that moment, fishermen were really happy, though in the end the price also declined due to many fish supplies. “Now, the fish catch is minimal and the price is also rising to some IDR 5,500 per head,” he said. But lately, that number continued to decrease as lacking of fish catch. Some of them then provided a boat only, or worked as porter of building materials on boat crossing to Nusa Penida. Meanwhile, the others eventually collected mosaic stones. “Apparently, the fishermen make no regeneration. Formerly, there were many fishermen here. But now, their number continue to decrease,” he said. Another fisherman on Kusamba Beach, Ketut Seregeg, also expressed similar opinion last Wednesday. Sailing for hours amidst the ocean while facing ferocious waves, in fact no single fish stuck on his nets. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Nicole Kidman reveals her deep depression Over a decade later, details are still scarce, but in a new interview, Kidman – now happily remarried to Keith Urban – talks a little bit more about her failed first union, and sets the record straight about any involvement she may have had in Cruise’s divorce from Katie Holmes. For the 20th anniversary of the Australian magazine WHO, Kidman talks about her last two decades as a Hollywood star, including her headline-making marriage to Cruise. Noting that she “married really fast and young,” the 45-year-old actress – who reportedly had issues with Cruise over religion (she was raised Catholic, he’s the most famous Scientologist) – said they had a “fantastic marriage for a long period,” calling it a “fantastic decade.” Their eventual split, which was a bitter one (she was pregnant when he filed for divorce and later suffered a miscarriage), took a toll on her. “When it didn’t work out, I had to really dig deep and find my way through depression,” Kidman said, referring to that period of her life as the “loneliest, loneliest existence.” However she doesn’t dwell on it, noting, “I have no regrets about any of it. It was all about growing up … I wish all of the people that have been involved in my life well, because it’s very important to me to be in a place of forgiveness and love.” Another reason to remain upbeat? Her marriage to Cruise brought her two children. With the long presidential campaign entering its final month, Romney needed a strong showing in the debate before tens of millions of television viewers as polls show him falling behind the president in what has been a tight race. It is not clear what effect, if any, the debate will have. But Romney, often seen as wooden and lacking passion, seemed more at ease than Obama. not involved in the campaign conceded the president was not at his best and missed opportunities to challenge his rival. Romney was clearly on the offensive, blaming Obama for the weak U.S. economy — the biggest issue in the campaign. “Going forward with the status quo is not going to cut it for the American people who are struggling today,” Romney said. He repeatedly accused Obama of misstating his positions, virtually lecturing
him at one point after the president accused him of seeking to cut education funds. “Mr. President, you’re entitled to your own airplane and your own house, but not your own facts.” Obama sparred back, accusing Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, of seeking to “double down” on economic policies that led to the devastating economic downturn four years ago — and of evasiveness when it came to prescriptions for tax changes, health care, Wall Street regulation and more. After Romney said he would repeal and replace regulations passed after the 2008 financial crisis, Obama responded: “Does anyone think there is too much oversight and regulation of Wall Street? Because if
you do, then Governor Romney is your candidate.” Obama, a former legal scholar, seemed somewhat professorial at times. He avoided themes that his campaign has used against Romney, including criticism of Romney’s private equity firm, Bain Capital, which the Democrat has demonized as a corporate predator. Obama also did not mention that Romney has personal assets in Swiss bank accounts. More surprisingly, Obama made no reference to a widely publicized secret recording of Romney, in which he said that 47 percent of Americans view themselves as victims who depend on the government and refuse to take responsibility for their lives.
