Taylor Swift goes blank on social media, sending fans into frenzy
LOS ANGELES - Taylor Swift, one of the most popular celebrities on social media, wiped all her accounts on Friday, sending fans into a frenzy over whether the pop singer had been hacked, was preparing to launch a new album, or was about to reinvent herself. Swift, who has 85 million Twitter followers and 102 million Instagram followers, deleted all of her Instagram photos, her posts on Tumblr, and removed her avatar from her Facebook page where all postings prior to December 2015 were missing. The “Blank Space” singer also deleted years of Twitter posts, and her official website showed just a black screen. “I’m scared to go to sleep thanks to Taylor Swift like what if she drops a new song,” tweeted an anxious
fan called Anu using the handle @ shadesoftaylor. Taylor’s publicist did not return calls for comment, but the development follows a busy two weeks for Swift, who earlier this month ended a six month absence from the public spotlight to testify at a high-profile groping trial in Denver, Colorado. Swift, 27, was on Monday awarded the symbolic $1 in damages that she had sought after a federal jury in Denver found that a radio DJ had grabbed her bottom while posing for
a photo with her in 2013. Her unflinching testimony describing the incident was applauded by fans and women’s rights groups for highlighting the issue of sexual assault. Swift later made a donation to the sexual violence campaign and support group Joyful Heart Foundation. Some fans speculated on Friday that Swift, whose last album was the best-selling “1989” in 2014, may be clearing out her accounts before releasing new music. Others wondered if she had been

LOS ANGELES - A Los Angeles judge on Friday rejected a request by the woman who was raped by director Roman Polanski 40 years ago to have the criminal case against him dismissed. Superior Court Judge Scott Gordon ruled that Polanski remained a fugitive from justice and that the court could not dismiss a case “merely because it would be in the victim’s best interest.”
The ruling follows the first appearance in June in the case by Samantha Geimer, who was 13 years old when Polanski sexually assaulted her in Los Angeles in 1977. The director, who admitted raping Geimer, spent 42 days in pre-trial custody. He then fled the United States, fearing a plea bargain with prosecutors would be overruled and that he would get a lengthy prison term. The “Chinatown” director, who
turned 84 on Friday, has never returned and numerous attempts by his lawyers to strike a deal without him spending more time in prison have failed. “The defendant in this matter stands as a fugitive and refuses to comply with court orders,” Gordon wrote. Geimer went to Los Angeles Superior Court in June pleading for his case to be resolved, saying she had forgiven Polanski years ago and wanted the case put to rest “as an act of mercy to myself and my family.” Geimer, who has three sons and now lives in Hawaii, said in June that Polanski had apologized to her years ago, but that she continued to remain a victim because of media attention each time there was a new development in the case. Gordon on Friday also rejected a request by Polanski’s attorney, Harland Braun, to unseal testimony about the 1977 plea deal. Braun had hoped to use the testimony to persuade European authorities to rescind the international arrest warrant against Polanski. (rtr)

BOSTON - Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Boston on Saturday to protest a “free speech” rally featuring far-right speakers a week after a woman was killed at a Virginia white-supremacist demonstration. Rally organizers had invited several far-right speakers who were confined to a small pen that police set up in the historic Boston Common park to keep the two sides separate. The city avoided a repeat of last weekend’s bloody street battles in Charlottesville, Virginia, where one woman was killed. Police estimated that as many as 40,000 people packed into the streets around the nation’s oldest park. Officials had spent a week planning security for the event, mobilizing 500 police officers, including many on bikes, and placing barricades and large white dump trucks on streets along the park, aiming to deter car-based attacks like those seen in Charlottesville and Europe. The rally never numbered more
than a few dozen people, and its speakers could not be heard due to the shouts of those protesting it and the wide security cordon between the two sides. It wrapped up about an hour earlier than planned. Protesters surrounded people leaving the rally, shouting “shame” and “go home” and occasionally throwing plastic water bottles. Police escorted several rally participants through the crowds, some-
times struggling against protesters who tried to stop them. Some people dressed in black with covered faces several times swarmed rally attendees, including two men wearing the “Make America Great Again” caps from President Donald Trump’s campaign. The violence in Charlottesville triggered the biggest domestic crisis yet for Trump, who provoked ire across the political spectrum for not immediately condemning
white nationalists and for praising “very fine people” on both sides of the fight. On Saturday, Trump on Twitter praised the Boston protesters. “I want to applaud the many protestors in Boston who are speaking out against bigotry and hate. Our country will soon come together as one!” Trump tweeted. “Our great country has been divided for decades. Hindu schools have troubel getting permit
DENPASAR - Establishing Hindu schools in Bali should be normal. After schools are intended to provide formal education as well as character building, whether they be religious schools, private or public. “Having Hindu schools is good. Having public schools improve their local culture subject matter would be even better. I is a bit difficult for Hindu schools to acquire a permit”, said Deputy Chairman of Commission IV of Bali House of Representatives, I Nyoman Wirya, when asked for his confirmation on Saturday (Aug. 19). Wirya explained that even proposing to have Hindu religion teachers is difficult – let alone establishing a Hindu school. There are in fact very few Hindu religion teachers, but the few times that proposals have been submitted to the Directorate General of Hindu Mass Guidance at the Ministry of Religious Affairs for such teachers, there has been no response. Many of the teachers who are currently teaching Hindu Religion will soon retire. “The recruitment of new teachers is only being done for general subject matter teachers. We have twice requested from the Hindu Mass Guidance department to recruit Hindu religion teachers, however this has yet to be realised”, explained this Golkar politician. Chairman of Commission IV of the Bali House of Representatives, I Nyoman Parta, said that the development of Hindu schools has yet to be seen in Bali – particularly at the basic levels of education. The Ministry of Religious Affairs
has in fact given permits to a few Hindu Schools, they are: Hindu kindergarten Adi Widya, Hindu elementary school (Pratamawidya), Hindu junior high school (Madyama Widya), Hindu high school (Uttama Widya) and Hindu college (Mahawidya). “Students for Hindu elementary schools are graduates of Hindu kindergarden, and Hindu High school students from Hindu Elementary schools and students in Hindu higher Education come form Hindu high Schools. Since there are very few lower level Hindu educational institutions, there is not much we can do to improve the higher levels’”, said this PDI-P politician. According to Parta, PDI-P has already facilitated the organization of several pilot projects for Hindu kindergarten and pre-schools that have proven to be quite popular. “However we do not have an established curriculum yet’ he added. Previously, the PDI-P indeed initiated the implementation of Hindu kindergartens and preschools as well as Balinese language kindergartens/preschools in 6 districts starting in 2017. They were established in districts whose regents PDI-P cadres, namely; Badung, Jembrana, Bangli, Tabanan, Gianyar and Buleleng. Denpasar has yet ot be able to establish such schools due to lack of land. “The establishment of the Hindu preschools and kindergartens as well as Balinese language preschools and kindergartens in Bali in 2017 is part of the national universal development planning in education, customs, religion, traditions and culture, program”, said Chairman of this PDI-P Bali, Dr. I Wayan Koster. According to Koster, the Hindu kindergartens and pre-
schools established in Bali in 2017 are just a pilot project. So far, the largest number of them are in Bangli with a total of 23 followed by Gianyar (14), Badung (12), Tabanan (10), Buleleng (9) and Jembrana (8). Some of these schools have been newly built while others have been modified from preexisting buildings. “Whether these schools are public or private, they are given the same support by both the Ministry o Education and Culture as well as the Ministry of Religious Affairs. In order for this project to run well, the director general of preschools and director general of Hindu mass guidance have disseminated relevant information regarding procedures and administration”, he explained. China’s SOE sends tour group to Bali MANGUPURA - The number of Chinese tourist who visit Bali continues to increase. In fact, Chinese owned enterprise Xian Lian is committed to sending groups to Bali. This year alone they will send over 2,000 tourists. “Since earlier this year, we have started working with Xian Lian, a China’s state-owned enterprise (SOE). This company has been commissioned by the Chinese government to make tour groups to Asian countries, and they chose Indonesia, specifically the ITDC as their sister SOE”, said Director of Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), Abdulbar M. Mansoer, on Friday (Aug. 18) at the signing ceremony for the cooperation between the ITDC and Zhuhai Henqin Xina Lian & Financial Technology Co. Ltd. on Peninsula Island. Mansoer explained that the company agreed to organize groups of tourists from 22 provinces in China. The arrival of 1,000 Chinese tourists will represent the inaugural arrival of groups from China who they plan to handle regularly. “They

Other will follow for different types of tourism such as wedding tourism, sports tourism and conventions. “Currently, we are formalizing the cooperation with Xian Lian. Sangsang River planted with thousands of bamboos
GIANYAR - Thousands of bamboo cuttings of the tabah variety (Gigantochloa nigrociliata BUSE-KURZ) were planted along the river basin of Sangsang River on Friday (Aug. 18). The planting of the bamboo that was powered by the Gianyar environment agency and the local community aims to meet the local needs for bamboo both for craft materials and for ceremonial purposes. The planting of 3,030 bamboo cuttings took place in three locations along the Sangsang River, where 1010 cuttings were planted at Sidan village and two other points, 1,010 cuttings at Kesian hamlet (Lebih) and 1,010 cuttings at the downstream areas of Lebih hamlet/village, Gianyar sub-district. When met amid the bamboo planting activity, headman of Sidan, Made Sukra Suyasa, admitted that this area is very suitable for bamboo because of the many steep valleys. He
also explained that this bamboo can serve to provide the raw materials for local handicrafts. “ So far we have been bringing in bamboo from outside of Gianyar. It would be better if we had out own” he said. Suyasa added that he hopes this will help increase the production of bamboo handycrafts. “In Sidan village, there are some bamboo home industries but not very many. Hopefully with an abundance of raw materials, the numbers of crafters will increase” he said. Hamlet chief of Kesian, Lebih, Wayan Kader, conveyed that bamboo is also needed for many ceremonies included for Galungan Day. “Our customary life requires bamboo constantly – especially for ceremonies like ngaben (cremation), temple anniversary and penjor making on Galungan. As glaciers melt, “Land of Fire and Ice” watches its history seep away
JOKULSARLON - T he tourists come in droves, aboard buses, bicycles and camper vans. They stand at the water’s edge in awe of the icebergs floating before them - some as white as snow, others radiating a deep blue. They gasp when a chunk breaks off and topples into the chilly turquoise water. Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon in southeast Iceland is one of the country’s top attractions. It is also a vivid warning of the glacier’s predicted disappearance, a devastating consequence of climate change in a nation where these slow-moving rivers of ice are a cultural and social touchstone. It looks centuries old, but the lagoon only appeared in the mid1930s when the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier started to retreat. Declared a nature reserve in July, it is now the country’s deepest lake and growing bigger every day. Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest ice cap and the source of Breiðamerkurjökull, is thinning rapidly due to rising global temperatures and could be completely gone in 200 years, scientists say. Other glaciers may vanish much earlier. “All glaciers in Iceland are retreating at an unprecedented pace,” said Oddur Sigurðsson, a geologist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) who has studied them for 30 years. Close to 10 glaciers with names, as well as many unnamed ones, have already disappeared, he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. Their demise heralds profound shifts in Iceland’s weather patterns, water flows, flora and fauna, volcanic activity and land mass, according to the IMO. Iceland is becoming greener and some of its land mass is rising as climate change gathers pace, scientists say, bringing economic and other consequences. But for many Icelanders - who like to call their nation the “Land
of Fire and Ice” as a tribute to the glaciers and volcanoes that forged its stunning, otherworldly landscape - the loss of their glaciers is deeply personal. “Just seeing them disappearing is very heartbreaking,” said Agnes Gunnarsdóttir, CEO of Perlan Museum in the capital Reykjavik. It is holding a state-of-the-art exhibition on glaciers and ice caves in a bid to educate tourists and residents about the impact of climate change on the environment. Gunnarsdóttir remembers visiting her grandparents’ home in the countryside when Vatnajökull was much larger. “We are seeing this in our lifetime. It’s changing so quickly - it’s very scary,” she said. Gudmundur Ögmundsson, manager of the Vatnajökull national park’s northern territory, has photographed Skaftafellsjökull, another outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, from a viewpoint on its western side for the past six years. Part of the glacier was clearly visible in the 2012 picture, but it barely appears in this year’s image. Ögmundsson fears it will vanish completely by next year. “There’s something so majestic about (glaciers) and then you see them on the decline. It’s sad,” he said. RISING LAND
The loss of the country’s ice is accelerating. During the 20th century, about 10 percent vanished, followed by a further 3 percent in the first decade of this century alone. Scientists say rising temperatures, particularly during the summer, are largely responsible. Temperature data going back 200 years shows episodic warming periods. But in the 21st century, large parts of Iceland have likely experienced the hottest years since the country was settled, said Halldór Björnsson, climate research group leader at the IMO. Glaciers are Iceland’s greatest
water storage receptacles. Covering at least 10 percent of its surface, they provide the tiny nation - home to just 330,000 people below the Arctic Circle - with abundant clean energy and spectacular waterfalls. These draw in a rising number of tourists, who numbered 1.3 million in 2015, up from 320,000 in 2005. Some of Iceland’s biggest power plants rely on glacier-fed rivers. As the glaciers melt, more water is flowing to the hydroelectric plants, but in the later part of this century, water volumes are projected to start decreasing, said Björnsson. And while countries further south fret over land loss due to sea level rise as glaciers melt, parts of Iceland are experiencing sea level drop. The thinning of large glaciers, such as Vatnajökull, reduces the load on the Earth’s crust near the ice masses, causing it to rebound and lift up. A 2015 study using data from GPS receivers found that parts of south-central Iceland were rising by about 3.5 cm (1.4 inches) a year due to accelerated ice loss. In Höfn, a port town in southeast Iceland known as its langoustine capital, the uplift is 1 cm per year, which translates into 1 metre per century. “There is hardly any reasonable amount of sea level rise that will catch up with those rates,” said Björnsson. Höfn’s harbour channel has become shallower due to sediment deposits, making it harder to reach the sea - and there may be other unforeseen complications, experts said.

Volcanic activity is also expected to increase, as the melting of glaciers relieves pressure on volcanic systems, scientists say. The eruption of glacier-tipped volcanoes can cause major melting of ice, leading to floods of historic proportions, Sigurðsson said. These “jökulhlaups”, a type of glacial outburst flood, alter landscapes, devastate vegetation and threaten lives as well as infrastructure, including hydroelectric plants along glacier-fed rivers. Yet Iceland still has no national strategy in place for adapting to climate change impacts, including melting glaciers. The country is working on an adaptation programme led by the IMO, the Ministry for the Environment and Natural Resources told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. In the short term, the effects of climate change are expected to bring some economic benefits for Iceland, experts say. Warmer temperatures could enable cereal cultivation and boost energy production, while new fish species may flourish. But Smári McCarthy, a parliamentarian for the Pirate Party representing the southern constituency including Höfn, said too little attention has been paid to adaptation. “Iceland has reasonably good plans around reducing CO2 emissions, but I’ve not seen anything about how to deal with the unavoidable effects of climate change, or even a proper listing of anticipated effects,” he said.
For towns like Höfn that base their livelihoods on fishing, the prospect of the harbour closing down is “an existential risk” the government has yet to address, he said. Some adaptation efforts are underway, however. Geologist Sigurðsson said the IMO is working on forecasting which rivers are liable to change course in the near future so adjustments in infrastructure can be made. Meanwhile, national power company Landsvirkjun outlined plans in 2015 to expand storage capacity in some reservoirs to deal with increased water flow and climate impacts.

To encourage salt farming, Regent plans to integrate tourism SEMARAPURA - Salt farming in the coastal area of ??Klungkung are increasingly concerned about their erratic income that makes young people reluctant to take on this profession. Despite the large demand for salt, few if any young people are interested in pursuing this line of work. To overcome this challenge, Regent of Klungkung, I Nyoman Suwirta, plans to revive this sector by integrating the tourism sector. This regent from Nusa Ceningan revealed that based on his investigations a number of salt farmers are worried about their fate. Some complained about the decreasing amount of beach front land available to making salt which has caused many to abandon this profession. Given the tremendous market value of salt today, the district government will be revitalizing the salt production sector in 2018. “I was alarmed to see the salt farmers being made powerless. As they reported, the land available for salt making has been narrowing. Some of the coastal lands have been bought up and measured right up to the sea making it impossible for them to use this land. The district government will take measures to improve such conditions” said the regent recently. The salt farm that stretches from Wates Beach to Pesinggahan Beach in the subdistrict of Dawan will be integrated with tourism sector with an estimated budget of IDR 1.8
billion. “We will create a rest area and salt-making tours. Also we will develop both traditional salt making as well as modern methods” he explained. Regent Suwirta added that this plan has not been sparked by the recent salt scarcity in Indonesia. “ This is not just because there is a huge market demand now, we started to tdesign this plan last year. I would have liked to see it realized this year, but it was not possible” he added. Some of the salt produced by these farmers will be distributed by the government to larger markets with Klungkung brand packaging. They also plan to require people to consume local salt. “ I do not care if the price of salt goes up or down, as the government, it is our duty to strive to improve conditions in good times and bad”, he said. The challenge to recruiting young people into this line of work was also recognized by the regent who said that they also plan to address this issue. Each village , he said will have at least one young entrepreneur who will be formed and supported by a village councillor whose tasks will include providing motivation. “We should not assume that no one wants to become a salt farmer. By educating young people about the potential benefits and providing them with a local councillor for support, there will certainly be young people who are interested, ”said the regent. (kmb45)

TABANAN - Nyambu village in the subdistrict of Kediri is comprised of about 60 percent green areas such as rice paddies, rivers, plantations and cliffs. These green spaces have been maintained thanks to a village regulation that prohibit productive land from being turned into buildings. Seeing the potential for tourism that these green spaces provided, the villagers of Nyambu have launched an eco-tourism project that priorities the natural environment and invites the villagers to maintain these green spaces instead of looking for quick profits from building concrete structures.

Headman of Nyambu, Ida Bagus Putu Sunarbawa, said that they started preparing and developing this village for tourism in 2016 and opened to visitors in April 2016. In this process, the community is encouraged not to litter and to process their own plastic waste. “ Every hamlet has their own garbage bank, and we are cooperating with the Customary Village for the transportation of organic trash”, he said. Since establishing the tourism village a year ago, Sunarbawa said that their have been significant changes particularly with regards to waster disposal and the general cleanliness of the village. To express appreciation for thesw changes, the village held a ‘celan telajakan (small front garden) competition as part of celebrations of Indonesia’s 72nd Independence day. Since eco-tourism in Nyambu village has been
developed for special-interest tourists who really want to enjoy the environment, they limit the number of people who can visit so as ot ensure that the natural environment remains intact. “We limit the number of visitors to 13- to 15 at a time”, he said. For both the comfort of visitors and to provide work for the villagers, local guides have been trained. Visitors to Nyambu Village are not allowed to roam on their own but are accompanied by a guide from the time they arrive until their departure. Guests must make advanced reservations as the tourism management team are not on duty 24H a day. “Tourists must schedule their visit here because currently we do not have staff on stand-by full time. They all have other jobs”, he said, adding that this is also for the comfort of visitors. Upon arrival, visitors are greeted with a welcome drink and a briefing about Nyambu Village. From then on they are accompanied by a guide provided by the eco-tourism management. Currently there are only four trained guides in Nyambu. Sunarbawa added that guides from outside the village are welcome to bring their guests here, but added that a local guide is still required to ensure eveyone’s security. “ Local guides know the terrain very well and if something happens they know everyone in the village so it is safer for tourists’, he explained. Initially, they only offered three themes to tourists: nature trekking, cultural activities and cycling. He added the Tirta Penglukatan Taman Campuan is believed to be able to cure all kinds of “non-medical” diseases. This conviction came to him after his father was affected by a poison. After being given holy water from Taman Campuan, the toxins left his fathers body through the anus and he was able to make a full recovery. Since then, people believe that this spring can cure “non-
medical” diseases. “However being cured is inseparable form having a strong foundation based on faith and self-confidence. Armed with sincere faith and intention, people will surely be healed” said Kayanan. Many people come to these springs to do purificatory rites on particular days such as on the full moon, new moon and kajeng kliwon (auspicious day when five and seven day calendars align in particular way). People must bring along pejati and canang oblations. The visiting pilgrims usually come from Bangli or other districts in Bali. Since the place is sanctified, he asks that the pilgrims who come here to do purificatory rites maintain positive thought and words. MANGUPURA — Trie Edi Mursabda began to cultivate silkworms at Lateng hamlet, Sibang Kaja, in 2009. As producers of the raw material for silk fabrics, the silkworms are bred for 22 days at a time. Edi who coordinates the cultivation of Bali silk also provides guidance to silk producers in Jembrana and Sidemen, Karangasem. Edi’s silk worms eat mulberry leaves from trees that he planted himself. The silkworm eggs are kept for 22 days during which time they grow into caterpillars that start creating their cocoon. The cocoons are then unravelled and spun into silk threads that are woven into cloth by hand. The silk threads are made into cloth as well as ready to wear scarves. Silk cultivation at Sibang Kaja is not the largest silk producer, however from a single harvest, they can produce 150 kg of silk thread that can be woven into 8 meters of fabric. “The largest silk producers are in Makasar, the second largest is in Badung, while the third largest is in Bali”m he said on Sunday (Aug. 19). The Kembang Sari Segara also manages an agro-tourism operation, breed Bali starlings and cultivates bok chuoy at the same location. The breeding of Bali starlings began in June 2016. Initially, the group only had 9 pairs of starlings (18 heads), but this number has since grown to to 40 heads. On their 3000 square meters of land, they have also developed and educational tourism site where turkey, deer and rabbits are now being bred too.“Initially, it was only a mulberry garden but now it has been arranged into an educational park”, said Operations Head of the Pertamina DPPU Ngurah Rai, Arnaya Gula, accompanied by Chairman of the Kembang Sari Segara group head, Nyoman Madia. The Segara Sari group also makes their own feed for the animals that they breed, using a mixture of crab shells, bran and corn. Udayana University provided the three machines used to processes these ingredients (one for crushing the crab shells, one to grind the ingredients together and one to make a mold for the feed). In addition to producers their own feed, the energy that they need for the rare bird breeding is also obtained independently. Students from SMKN 1 Kuta vocational school, under the guidance of Pertamina created a solar power plants that provides electricity for the lights, incubators and egg hatching. (kmb42)

The cause of the derailment about 130 km (80 miles) north of the capital New Delhi, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, was not known, said Northern Railways spokesman Neeraj Sharma. Thirteen coaches of the train came off the tracks as it was heading to the Hindu holy city of Haridwar, police said. The toll rose to 23 dead with at least 123 people injured. Sharma said rescue operations had ended and a safety commissioner would launch an investigation later on Sunday. The driver of the train would be one of the first people to be questioned, Sharma said. He said the death toll could rise. A senior official in the Uttar Pradesh government, Arvind Kumar, told the Hindustan Times the train driver had slammed on the brakes after spotting maintenance work on the tracks that had not been properly signalled.
“It is too early to say what was the cause,” Sharma said when asked about the report. Train crashes are all too common in India after decades of poor investment and rising demand, which usually mean packed trains are running on creaking infrastructure. Saturday’s accident is at least the fourth major accident this year and the third in Uttar Pradesh in 2017. A crash in November in Uttar Pradesh killed 150 people. The network is in the middle of a $130 billion, five-year modernisation. In addition, the government launched a $15 billion safety overhaul in February after the surge in accidents blamed on defective tracks. But in June, Reuters reported that the overhaul was facing delays as the state steel company could not meet demand for new rails. (rtr)

OREGON - Twilight will fall at midday on Monday, stars will glimmer and birds will roost in an eerie stillness as millions of Americans and visitors witness the first total solar eclipse to traverse the United States from coast to coast in 99 years. The sight of the moon’s shadow passing directly in front of the sun, blotting out all but the halo-like solar corona, may draw the largest live audience for a celestial event in human history. When those watching via broadcast and online media are factored into the mix, the spectacle will likely smash records. “It will certainly be the most observed total eclipse in history,” astronomer Rick Fienberg of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) said last week. The eclipse begins its crosscountry trajectory over the Pacific Coast of Oregon in late morning. It will reach South Carolina’s Atlantic shore some 90 minutes later. The total eclipse of the sun is considered one of the most spell-binding phenomena in nature but it rarely
occurs over a wide swath of land, let alone one of the world’s most heavily populated countries at the height of summer. In terms of audience potential, it is hard to top the United States, with its mobile and affluent population, even though the direct path is mostly over rural areas, towns and small cities. He also said the United States was seeking new measures to ensure “substantial U.S. content” for autos. Companies wishing to take advantage of free trade in goods guaranteed by NAFTA must currently meet the 62.5 percent North American content requirement for autos and 60 percent for components. But during the opening four-hour round of talks on rules of origin on Friday, the U.S. delegation did not give details of how much it wanted the requirements to be lifted by. It also did not give a specific figure for what substantial U.S. content for autos could mean, said the source, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity
of the matter. U.S. officials said they could not confirm the source’s account. Agreement on a revised NAFTA agreement could pivot on the autos sector given its weight in trade. The United States had autos and auto parts trade deficits of $74 billion with Mexico and $5.6 billion with Canada last year, both major components of overall U.S. goods trade deficits with its North American neighbors. The United States, Canada and Mexico on Wednesday opened talks in Washington to modernize the North American Free Trade Agreement, which was signed in 1994. Trump has denounced NAFTA as a “disaster” that encouraged firms to shift production to Mexico. Various unique and interesting traditions can be found in North Bali. One of them is a tradition characterized by vivacious heroism remaining to exist in the community until these days. The ‘War of Rattan’ or better known as gebug ende can be found at Patas village, Gerokgak subdistrict. Actually, this tradition comes from the lava land (nickname of Karangasem, precisely from Seraya village). By and large, this tradition is played when dry season arrives. At that time, people of Seraya have a religious cultural tradition to beg for rain. This tradition is played by two men, where the player hits each other with a rattan whip of two meters long. It is accompanied with a piece of shield with a diameter of 60 cm made of dry cowhide tied to wooden frame. Other than the players, in the arena of the game there are also two people serving as referee or pakembar. Even though their body is hit by rattan, they are still happy and dance with joy. Meanwhile, the sound of the baleganjur gamelan music is played as a companion to heat up the atmosphere of “the war.” At the same time, the audience keeps cheering to give support to the one on one fight. After holding the gebug, by degrees the bad things will disappear and be back to normal as before. Whatever bad things are, if neutralized by this gebug game then it will certainly be destroyed. It is according to public belief,” he said. This attraction usually takes place in public places by inviting opponents at the village. Gebug game is played by two small children, adults and parents. Amid the current advancement of technology, the gebug tradition having existed in the Bali Aga era is already almost extinct. Spain hunts for driver in van rampage, says Islamist cell dismantled
BARCELONA - Police were searching on Saturday for the driver of a van that killed 13 people when it ploughed into a crowd in Barcelona and were trying to determine whether two other suspected Islamist militants linked to the attack had died or were at large. The Spanish government said it considered it had dismantled the cell behind Thursday’s Barcelona rampage and an attack early on Friday in the Catalan seaside town of Cambrils. Police arrested four people in connection with the attacks Barcelona and Cambrils, where a woman was killed when a car rammed passersby on Friday. Five attackers wearing fake explosive belts were also shot dead in the Catalan town. “The cell has been fully dismantled in Barcelona, after examining the people who died, the people who were arrested and carrying out identity checks,” Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido told a news conference. But authorities have yet to identify the driver of the van and his whereabouts are unclear, while police and officials in the northeastern region of Catalonia said they still needed to locate up to two other people. Investigators are focusing on a group of at least 12 suspects believed to be behind the deadliest attacks to hit Spain in more than a decade. In little more than a year, militants have used vehicles as weapons to kill nearly 130 people in France, Germany, Britain, Sweden and Spain. None of the nine people arrested or shot dead by police are believed to be the driver who sped into Las Ramblas, leaving a trail of dead and injured among the crowds of tourists and local residents strolling along the Barcelona boulevard. A Moroccan-born 22-year-old called Younes Abouyaaqoub was among those being sought, according to the mayor’s office in the Catalan town of Ripoll, where he and other suspects lived. Moroccan asylum seeker “targeted women” in Finland knife attack
HELSINKI - A Moroccan man who was arrested for killing two women in a knife rampage was an asylum seeker who appeared to have targeted women in Finland’s first terrorism-related attack, police and a Red Cross official said on Saturday. The 18-year-old suspect, arrested in the city of Turku following Friday’s attack in which eight other people - six of them women - were wounded, arrived in Finland last year, police said. Police shot the suspect in the leg before his arrest. Police also arrested four other Moroccan men over possible links to him and issued an international arrest warrant for a sixth Moroccan, they said. Finnish broadcaster MTV, citing an unnamed source, said the main suspect had been denied asylum in Finland, although police said only he had been “part of the asylum process”. The manager of the Red Cross reception centre in Turku, where flags flew at half-mast on Saturday, told Reuters the suspect was an asylum seeker. “I cannot comment on the application’s outcome,” Heimo Nurmi said. He said police visited the centre on Friday and had detained several people. “The arrests were non-violent,” he added.
It was not clear if the attack was in any way linked to the suspect’s asylum application. The case marks the first suspected terror attack in Finland, where violent crime is relatively rare. Police said they were investigating possible links to Thursday’s deadly van attack in the Spanish city of Barcelona. “The suspect’s profile is similar to that of several other recent radical Islamist terror attacks that have taken place in Europe,” Director Antti Pelttari from the Finnish Security Intelligence Service told a news conference. Both of those killed in the Turku attack, and six of the eight who were wounded, were women, the police said. The crystal meth, believed to
be smuggled from Malaysia, was packed in two sacks, he noted. Depari remarked that BNN officers arrested all the five suspects after questioning T, who acted as a messenger. According to T, the crystal meth, which belonged to D, was smuggled from the neighboring country aboard his vessel. During the raid, the BNN officers also seized two cars and six mobile phones. TIMIKA - Thousands of striking employees damaged and burned PT Freeport Indonesias facilities such as the office of Gorong-Gorong Terminal, Timika, Papua, on Saturday night.
The destruction of the Timika Terminal facilities was triggered due to the forceful dissolution of striking employees by police on PT Freeports main road linking the Amamapare port with Timika and Tembagapura, near Check Point 28. Being cornered, the striking masses ran for safety to Freeports old road and some others ran to the GorongGoroang Timika Bus Terminal. “The employees burned the Terminal Office. There were no buses on fire,” one of the Mimika Police officers stated at the Gorong-Gorong Terminal. White smoke was seen rising high around the location. After destroying and burning the Freeport facility at the Terminal, the mass of striking employees spread to a number of points in Timika City. They targeted a number of labor supplier companies, which supply workers to PT Freeport, and its subcontractors, which over the last few months recruited new workers. Some of the suppliers are PT Petrosea, PT Maipagela, and PT Buma Intinaker. But the destruction and burning at the PT Petrosea Office was foiled by the apparatus.

16,056 islands -- containing information on the names, coordinates, and locations -- within the territory of Indonesia has, until July 2017, been standardized in the UN. According to Deputy for Maritime Sovereignty Affairs of the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs Arif Havas Oegroseno, Indonesia has, in fact, recorded as many as 17,504 islands that are included in the territory of and belong to the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. “The validation and verification of 1,448 islands still need to be carried out,” he noted. With the changing weather and various natural anomalies, Oegroseno said several islands had surfaced while some had disappeared due to abrasion. Hence, the verification and naming of islands are being carried out on an ongoing basis for ascertaining Indonesias geographical territory. Furthermore, he explained that the registration of the topographic names in the UN, as an administrative activity, holds significance for the UN member states. “The goal is to maintain the standardized names of the islands, so that there would be no single island with different names,” he pointed out. However, he stressed that the registration of a name does not mean a sovereign recognition by the UN for a countrys ownership of the island. “The position of the UN, in particular the UNGEGN, is clear, i.e., it only conducts the standardization of names. MILAN - Juventus began their pursuit of a seventh successive Serie A title with a 3-0 home win over Cagliari on Saturday after the Sardinians missed a penalty awarded with the help of a video replay.
Mario Mandzukic, Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain scored for the Turin side in the match which kicked off the Serie A season, but the game could have taken a different course if Diego Farias had converted a spot kick for Cagliari when they were 1-0 behind. BARCELONA - Chris Froome’s bid to win the Vuelta a Espana for the first time got off to a strong start as the Briton’s Team Sky came fourth in the team time trial in stage one on Saturday in Nimes, which was won by BMC Racing. BMC’s Rohan Dennis of Australia is the overall leader and will wear the red jersey in Sunday’s flat 203.4 km stage, which also takes place in the southern French city before moving into Spain in stage four on Tuesday. “It’s a good start for us,” Froome told reporters. “OK, it’s not the stage victory, but we put in a very solid ride. We’re there or thereabouts with the best teams.” Four-time Tour de France champion Froome is aiming to become the
first rider in 39 years to win the Tour and the Vuelta in the same year and made an early dent on his rivals in the general classification (GC), leading Vincenzo Nibali by 22 seconds, Alberto Contador by 26 and Fabio Aru by 32. Spain hunts for driver in van rampage, says Islamist cell dismantled
BARCELONA - Police were searching on Saturday for the driver of a van that killed 13 people when it ploughed into a crowd in Barcelona and were trying to determine whether two other suspected Islamist militants linked to the attack had died or were at large. The Spanish government said it considered it had dismantled the cell behind Thursday’s Barcelona rampage and an attack early on Friday in the Catalan seaside town of Cambrils. Police arrested four people in connection with the attacks Barcelona and Cambrils, where a woman was killed when a car rammed passersby on Friday. Five attackers wearing fake explosive belts were also shot dead in the Catalan town. “The cell has been fully dismantled in Barcelona, after examining the people who died, the people who were arrested and carrying out identity checks,” Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido told a news conference. But authorities have yet to identify the driver of the van and his whereabouts are unclear, while police and officials in the northeastern region of Catalonia said they still needed to locate up to two other people. Investigators are focusing on a group of at least 12 suspects believed to be behind the deadliest attacks to hit Spain in more than a decade. In little more than a year, militants have used vehicles as weapons to kill nearly 130 people in France, Germany, Britain, Sweden and Spain. None of the nine people arrested or shot dead by police are believed to be the driver who sped into Las Ramblas, leaving a trail of dead and injured among the crowds of tourists and local residents strolling along the Barcelona boulevard. A Moroccan-born 22-year-old called Younes Abouyaaqoub was among those being sought, according to the mayor’s office in the Catalan town of Ripoll, where he and other suspects lived. Spanish media reported that Abouyaaqoub may have been the driver of the van in Barcelona, but police and Catalan officials could not confirm this. The driver in the Barcelona attack abandoned the van and fled on foot on Thursday after ploughing into the crowd. Moroccan asylum seeker “targeted women” in Finland knife attack
HELSINKI - A Moroccan man who was arrested for killing two women in a knife rampage was an asylum seeker who appeared to have targeted women in Finland’s first terrorism-related attack, police and a Red Cross official said on Saturday. The 18-year-old suspect, arrested in the city of Turku following Friday’s attack in which eight other people - six of them women - were wounded, arrived in Finland last year, police said. Police shot the suspect in the leg before his arrest. Police also arrested four other Moroccan men over possible links to him and issued an international arrest warrant for a sixth Moroccan, they said. Finnish broadcaster MTV, citing an unnamed source, said the main suspect had been denied asylum in Finland, although police said only he had been “part of the asylum process”. The manager of the Red Cross reception centre in Turku, where flags flew at half-mast on Saturday, told Reuters the suspect was an asylum seeker. “I cannot comment on the application’s outcome,” Heimo Nurmi said. He said police visited the centre on Friday and had detained several people. “The arrests were non-violent,” he added.
It was not clear if the attack was in any way linked to the suspect’s asylum application. The case marks the first suspected terror attack in Finland, where violent crime is relatively rare. Police said they were investigating possible links to Thursday’s deadly van attack in the Spanish city of Barcelona. “The suspect’s profile is similar to that of several other recent radical Islamist terror attacks that have taken place in Europe,” Director Antti Pelttari from the Finnish Security Intelligence Service told a news conference. Both of those killed in the Turku attack, and six of the eight who were wounded, were women, the police said. The two who died were Finns, and an Italian and two Swedish citizens were among the injured. “It seems that the suspect chose women as his targets, because the men who were wounded were injured when they tried to help, or prevent the attacks,” said Crista Granroth from the National Bureau of Investigation. “The act was cowardly ... we have been afraid of this and we have prepared for this. The five suspects, who were identified by their initials as M, Z, TM, S, and D, were arrested on Medan-Banda Aceh highway on Friday (Aug 17), BNN Deputy Chief for Eradication Inspector General Arman Depari stated here on Saturday. The crystal meth, believed to
be smuggled from Malaysia, was packed in two sacks, he noted. Depari remarked that BNN officers arrested all the five suspects after questioning T, who acted as a messenger. According to T, the crystal meth, which belonged to D, was smuggled from the neighboring country aboard his vessel. During the raid, the BNN officers also seized two cars and six mobile phones. TIMIKA - Thousands of striking employees damaged and burned PT Freeport Indonesias facilities such as the office of Gorong-Gorong Terminal, Timika, Papua, on Saturday night.
The destruction of the Timika Terminal facilities was triggered due to the forceful dissolution of striking employees by police on PT Freeports main road linking the Amamapare port with Timika and Tembagapura, near Check Point 28. Being cornered, the striking masses ran for safety to Freeports old road and some others ran to the GorongGoroang Timika Bus Terminal. “The employees burned the Terminal Office. There were no buses on fire,” one of the Mimika Police officers stated at the Gorong-Gorong Terminal. White smoke was seen rising high around the location. After destroying and burning the Freeport facility at the Terminal, the mass of striking employees spread to a number of points in Timika City. They targeted a number of labor supplier companies, which supply workers to PT Freeport, and its subcontractors, which over the last few months recruited new workers. Some of the suppliers are PT Petrosea, PT Maipagela, and PT Buma Intinaker. But the destruction and burning at the PT Petrosea Office was foiled by the apparatus.

16,056 islands -- containing information on the names, coordinates, and locations -- within the territory of Indonesia has, until July 2017, been standardized in the UN. According to Deputy for Maritime Sovereignty Affairs of the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs Arif Havas Oegroseno, Indonesia has, in fact, recorded as many as 17,504 islands that are included in the territory of and belong to the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. “The validation and verification of 1,448 islands still need to be carried out,” he noted. With the changing weather and various natural anomalies, Oegroseno said several islands had surfaced while some had disappeared due to abrasion. Hence, the verification and naming of islands are being carried out on an ongoing basis for ascertaining Indonesias geographical territory. Furthermore, he explained that the registration of the topographic names in the UN, as an administrative activity, holds significance for the UN member states. “The goal is to maintain the standardized names of the islands, so that there would be no single island with different names,” he pointed out. However, he stressed that the registration of a name does not mean a sovereign recognition by the UN for a countrys ownership of the island. “The position of the UN, in particular the UNGEGN, is clear, i.e., it only conducts the standardization of names. Robert Lighthizer, President Donald Trump’s top trade adviser, this week said Washington wanted tougher rules of origin for autos, which determine how much of a vehicle must be built in the three NAFTA nations. He also said the United States was seeking new measures to ensure “substantial U.S. content” for autos. Companies wishing to take advantage of free trade in goods guaranteed by NAFTA must currently meet the 62.5 percent North American content requirement for autos and 60 percent for components. But during the opening four-hour round of talks on rules of origin on Friday, the U.S. delegation did not give details of how much it wanted the requirements to be lifted by. It also did not give a specific figure for what substantial U.S. content for autos could mean, said the source, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity
of the matter. U.S. officials said they could not confirm the source’s account. Agreement on a revised NAFTA agreement could pivot on the autos sector given its weight in trade. The United States had autos and auto parts trade deficits of $74 billion with Mexico and $5.6 billion with Canada last year, both major components of overall U.S. goods trade deficits with its North American neighbors. The United States, Canada and Mexico on Wednesday opened talks in Washington to modernize the North American Free Trade Agreement, which was signed in 1994. The ‘War of Rattan’ or better known as gebug ende can be found at Patas village, Gerokgak subdistrict. Actually, this tradition comes from the lava land (nickname of Karangasem, precisely from Seraya village). By and large, this tradition is played when dry season arrives. At that time, people of Seraya have a religious cultural tradition to beg for rain. This tradition is played by two men, where the player hits each other with a rattan whip of two meters long. It is accompanied with a piece of shield with a diameter of 60 cm made of dry cowhide tied to wooden frame. Other than the players, in the arena of the game there are also two people serving as referee or pakembar. Even though their body is hit by rattan, they are still happy and dance with joy. Meanwhile, the sound of the baleganjur gamelan music is played as a companion to heat up the atmosphere of “the war.” At the same time, the audience keeps cheering to give support to the one on one fight. This gebug ende attraction is generally performed on the sidelines of breaks in the fields at noon or evening. It is commonly held prior to the planting season in the field. If the rain late long in the season, gebug ende will be held. Originally this tradition comes from the Seraya village, Karangasem,” he said. A senior figure of Patas village, Ketut Koroh, said that if one of the players bleeds due to the blow of rattan stick, there is a possibility to rain. In short, according to the belief of Seraya people, the gebug game is held at this village to appeal to God for rain for the sake of agricultural purposes. Apparently this tradition is not just to beg for rain. “If something bad happens, this gebug tradition can be held. For example, there is uncontrollable pest attack, this gebug is the repellent. After holding the gebug, by degrees the bad things will disappear and be back to normal as before. Whatever bad things are, if neutralized by this gebug game then it will certainly be destroyed. It is according to public belief,” he said. This attraction usually takes place in public places by inviting opponents at the village. Gebug game is played by two small children, adults and parents. Amid the current advancement of technology, the gebug tradition having existed in the Bali Aga era is already almost extinct. After being given holy water from Taman Campuan, the toxins left his fathers body through the anus and he was able to make a full recovery. Since then, people believe that this spring can cure “non-
medical” diseases. “However being cured is inseparable form having a strong foundation based on faith and self-confidence. Armed with sincere faith and intention, people will surely be healed” said Kayanan. Many people come to these springs to do purificatory rites on particular days such as on the full moon, new moon and kajeng kliwon (auspicious day when five and seven day calendars align in particular way). People must bring along pejati and canang oblations. The visiting pilgrims usually come from Bangli or other districts in Bali. Since the place is sanctified, he asks that the pilgrims who come here to do purificatory rites maintain positive thought and words. The silkworm eggs are kept for 22 days during which time they grow into caterpillars that start creating their cocoon. The cocoons are then unravelled and spun into silk threads that are woven into cloth by hand. The silk threads are made into cloth as well as ready to wear scarves. Silk cultivation at Sibang Kaja is not the largest silk producer, however from a single harvest, they can produce 150 kg of silk thread that can be woven into 8 meters of fabric. “The largest silk producers are in Makasar, the second largest is in Badung, while the third largest is in Bali”m he said on Sunday (Aug. 19). The Kembang Sari Segara also manages an agro-tourism operation, breed Bali starlings and cultivates bok chuoy at the same location. The breeding of Bali starlings began in June 2016. Initially, the group only had 9 pairs of starlings (18 heads), but this number has since grown to to 40 heads. On their 3000 square meters of land, they have also developed and educational tourism site where turkey, deer and rabbits are now being bred too.“Initially, it was only a mulberry garden but now it has been arranged into an educational park”, said Operations Head of the Pertamina DPPU Ngurah Rai, Arnaya Gula, accompanied by Chairman of the Kembang Sari Segara group head, Nyoman Madia. The Segara Sari group also makes their own feed for the animals that they breed, using a mixture of crab shells, bran and corn. Udayana University provided the three machines used to processes these ingredients (one for crushing the crab shells, one to grind the ingredients together and one to make a mold for the feed). In addition to producers their own feed, the energy that they need for the rare bird breeding is also obtained independently. The cause of the derailment about 130 km (80 miles) north of the capital New Delhi, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, was not known, said Northern Railways spokesman Neeraj Sharma. Thirteen coaches of the train came off the tracks as it was heading to the Hindu holy city of Haridwar, police said. The toll rose to 23 dead with at least 123 people injured. Sharma said rescue operations had ended and a safety commissioner would launch an investigation later on Sunday. The driver of the train would be one of the first people to be questioned, Sharma said. He said the death toll could rise. A senior official in the Uttar Pradesh government, Arvind Kumar, told the Hindustan Times the train driver had slammed on the brakes after spotting maintenance work on the tracks that had not been properly signalled.
“It is too early to say what was the cause,” Sharma said when asked about the report. Train crashes are all too common in India after decades of poor investment and rising demand, which usually mean packed trains are running on creaking infrastructure. Saturday’s accident is at least the fourth major accident this year and the third in Uttar Pradesh in 2017. A crash in November in Uttar Pradesh killed 150 people. The network is in the middle of a $130 billion, five-year modernisation. In addition, the government launched a $15 billion safety overhaul in February after the surge in accidents blamed on defective tracks. But in June, Reuters reported that the overhaul was facing delays as the state steel company could not meet demand for new rails. (rtr)
Millions of Americans to gaze upon Monday’s once-in-a-lifetime eclipse
OREGON - Twilight will fall at midday on Monday, stars will glimmer and birds will roost in an eerie stillness as millions of Americans and visitors witness the first total solar eclipse to traverse the United States from coast to coast in 99 years. The sight of the moon’s shadow passing directly in front of the sun, blotting out all but the halo-like solar corona, may draw the largest live audience for a celestial event in human history. When those watching via broadcast and online media are factored into the mix, the spectacle will likely smash records. “It will certainly be the most observed total eclipse in history,” astronomer Rick Fienberg of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) said last week. The eclipse begins its crosscountry trajectory over the Pacific Coast of Oregon in late morning. It will reach South Carolina’s Atlantic shore some 90 minutes later. The total eclipse of the sun is considered one of the most spell-binding phenomena in nature but it rarely
occurs over a wide swath of land, let alone one of the world’s most heavily populated countries at the height of summer. In terms of audience potential, it is hard to top the United States, with its mobile and affluent population, even though the direct path is mostly over rural areas, towns and small cities. The largest is Nashville, Tennessee, a city of 660,000 residents. Even so the advent of social media and inexpensive high-tech optics have boosted public awareness, assuring what many U.S. experts predict will be unprecedented viewership for the so-called “Great American Eclipse.” Some might take issue with that prediction, citing a solar eclipse visible over parts of India, Nepal, Bangladesh and central China in July 2009. National Geographic estimated 30 million people in Shanghai and Hangzhou alone were in its path that day. On Monday, the deepest part of the shadow, or umbra, cast by the moon will fall over a 70-mile-wide (113-km-wide), 2,500-mile-long
(4,000-km-long) “path of totality” traversing 14 states. The 12 million people who live there can view the eclipse at its fullest merely by walking outside and looking up, weather permitting.
LIVESTREAMING AND PRICE-GOUGING Some 200 million Americans reside within a day’s drive of the totality zone, and as many as 7 million, experts say, are expected to converge on towns and campgrounds along the narrow corridor for the event. Many are attending multiday festivals featuring music, yoga and astronomy lectures. Millions more could potentially watch in real time as the eclipse is captured by video cameras mounted on 50 high-altitude balloons and streamed online in a joint project between NASA and Montana State University. A partial eclipse will appear throughout North America. As glaciers melt, “Land of Fire and Ice” watches its history seep away
JOKULSARLON - T he tourists come in droves, aboard buses, bicycles and camper vans. They stand at the water’s edge in awe of the icebergs floating before them - some as white as snow, others radiating a deep blue. They gasp when a chunk breaks off and topples into the chilly turquoise water. Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon in southeast Iceland is one of the country’s top attractions. It is also a vivid warning of the glacier’s predicted disappearance, a devastating consequence of climate change in a nation where these slow-moving rivers of ice are a cultural and social touchstone. It looks centuries old, but the lagoon only appeared in the mid1930s when the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier started to retreat. Declared a nature reserve in July, it is now the country’s deepest lake and growing bigger every day. Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest ice cap and the source of Breiðamerkurjökull, is thinning rapidly due to rising global temperatures and could be completely gone in 200 years, scientists say. Other glaciers may vanish much earlier. “All glaciers in Iceland are retreating at an unprecedented pace,” said Oddur Sigurðsson, a geologist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) who has studied them for 30 years. Close to 10 glaciers with names, as well as many unnamed ones, have already disappeared, he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. Their demise heralds profound shifts in Iceland’s weather patterns, water flows, flora and fauna, volcanic activity and land mass, according to the IMO. Iceland is becoming greener and some of its land mass is rising as climate change gathers pace, scientists say, bringing economic and other consequences. But for many Icelanders - who like to call their nation the “Land
of Fire and Ice” as a tribute to the glaciers and volcanoes that forged its stunning, otherworldly landscape - the loss of their glaciers is deeply personal. “Just seeing them disappearing is very heartbreaking,” said Agnes Gunnarsdóttir, CEO of Perlan Museum in the capital Reykjavik. It is holding a state-of-the-art exhibition on glaciers and ice caves in a bid to educate tourists and residents about the impact of climate change on the environment. Gunnarsdóttir remembers visiting her grandparents’ home in the countryside when Vatnajökull was much larger. “We are seeing this in our lifetime. It’s changing so quickly - it’s very scary,” she said. Gudmundur Ögmundsson, manager of the Vatnajökull national park’s northern territory, has photographed Skaftafellsjökull, another outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, from a viewpoint on its western side for the past six years. Part of the glacier was clearly visible in the 2012 picture, but it barely appears in this year’s image. Ögmundsson fears it will vanish completely by next year. “There’s something so majestic about (glaciers) and then you see them on the decline. It’s sad,” he said. RISING LAND
The loss of the country’s ice is accelerating. During the 20th century, about 10 percent vanished, followed by a further 3 percent in the first decade of this century alone. Scientists say rising temperatures, particularly during the summer, are largely responsible. Temperature data going back 200 years shows episodic warming periods. But in the 21st century, large parts of Iceland have likely experienced the hottest years since the country was settled, said Halldór Björnsson, climate research group leader at the IMO. Glaciers are Iceland’s greatest
water storage receptacles. Covering at least 10 percent of its surface, they provide the tiny nation - home to just 330,000 people below the Arctic Circle - with abundant clean energy and spectacular waterfalls. These draw in a rising number of tourists, who numbered 1.3 million in 2015, up from 320,000 in 2005. Some of Iceland’s biggest power plants rely on glacier-fed rivers. As the glaciers melt, more water is flowing to the hydroelectric plants, but in the later part of this century, water volumes are projected to start decreasing, said Björnsson. And while countries further south fret over land loss due to sea level rise as glaciers melt, parts of Iceland are experiencing sea level drop. The thinning of large glaciers, such as Vatnajökull, reduces the load on the Earth’s crust near the ice masses, causing it to rebound and lift up. A 2015 study using data from GPS receivers found that parts of south-central Iceland were rising by about 3.5 cm (1.4 inches) a year due to accelerated ice loss. In Höfn, a port town in southeast Iceland known as its langoustine capital, the uplift is 1 cm per year, which translates into 1 metre per century. “There is hardly any reasonable amount of sea level rise that will catch up with those rates,” said Björnsson. Höfn’s harbour channel has become shallower due to sediment deposits, making it harder to reach the sea - and there may be other unforeseen complications, experts said.
UNAVOIDABLE IMPACTS
Volcanic activity is also expected to increase, as the melting of glaciers relieves pressure on volcanic systems, scientists say. The eruption of glacier-tipped volcanoes can cause major melting of ice, leading to floods of historic proportions, Sigurðsson said. These “jökulhlaups”, a type of glacial outburst flood, alter landscapes, devastate vegetation and threaten lives as well as infrastructure, including hydroelectric plants along glacier-fed rivers. Yet Iceland still has no national strategy in place for adapting to climate change impacts, including melting glaciers. The country is working on an adaptation programme led by the IMO, the Ministry for the Environment and Natural Resources told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. In the short term, the effects of climate change are expected to bring some economic benefits for Iceland, experts say. Warmer temperatures could enable cereal cultivation and boost energy production, while new fish species may flourish. But Smári McCarthy, a parliamentarian for the Pirate Party representing the southern constituency including Höfn, said too little attention has been paid to adaptation. “Iceland has reasonably good plans around reducing CO2 emissions, but I’ve not seen anything about how to deal with the unavoidable effects of climate change, or even a proper listing of anticipated effects,” he said.
For towns like Höfn that base their livelihoods on fishing, the prospect of the harbour closing down is “an existential risk” the government has yet to address, he said. Some adaptation efforts are underway, however. Geologist Sigurðsson said the IMO is working on forecasting which rivers are liable to change course in the near future so adjustments in infrastructure can be made. Meanwhile, national power company Landsvirkjun outlined plans in 2015 to expand storage capacity in some reservoirs to deal with increased water flow and climate impacts.

To encourage salt farming, Regent plans to integrate tourism SEMARAPURA - Salt farming in the coastal area of ??Klungkung are increasingly concerned about their erratic income that makes young people reluctant to take on this profession. Despite the large demand for salt, few if any young people are interested in pursuing this line of work. To overcome this challenge, Regent of Klungkung, I Nyoman Suwirta, plans to revive this sector by integrating the tourism sector. This regent from Nusa Ceningan revealed that based on his investigations a number of salt farmers are worried about their fate. Some complained about the decreasing amount of beach front land available to making salt which has caused many to abandon this profession. Given the tremendous market value of salt today, the district government will be revitalizing the salt production sector in 2018. “I was alarmed to see the salt farmers being made powerless. As they reported, the land available for salt making has been narrowing. Some of the coastal lands have been bought up and measured right up to the sea making it impossible for them to use this land. The district government will take measures to improve such conditions” said the regent recently. The salt farm that stretches from Wates Beach to Pesinggahan Beach in the subdistrict of Dawan will be integrated with tourism sector with an estimated budget of IDR 1.8
billion. “We will create a rest area and salt-making tours. Also we will develop both traditional salt making as well as modern methods” he explained. Regent Suwirta added that this plan has not been sparked by the recent salt scarcity in Indonesia. “ This is not just because there is a huge market demand now, we started to tdesign this plan last year. I would have liked to see it realized this year, but it was not possible” he added. Some of the salt produced by these farmers will be distributed by the government to larger markets with Klungkung brand packaging. They also plan to require people to consume local salt. “ I do not care if the price of salt goes up or down, as the government, it is our duty to strive to improve conditions in good times and bad”, he said. The challenge to recruiting young people into this line of work was also recognized by the regent who said that they also plan to address this issue. Each village , he said will have at least one young entrepreneur who will be formed and supported by a village councillor whose tasks will include providing motivation. “We should not assume that no one wants to become a salt farmer. By educating young people about the potential benefits and providing them with a local councillor for support, there will certainly be young people who are interested, ”said the regent. (kmb45)
Nyambu tourism village offers ecotourism

TABANAN - Nyambu village in the subdistrict of Kediri is comprised of about 60 percent green areas such as rice paddies, rivers, plantations and cliffs. These green spaces have been maintained thanks to a village regulation that prohibit productive land from being turned into buildings. Seeing the potential for tourism that these green spaces provided, the villagers of Nyambu have launched an eco-tourism project that priorities the natural environment and invites the villagers to maintain these green spaces instead of looking for quick profits from building concrete structures.

It may be difficult to imagine Iceland without its signature glaciers, immortalised in mediaeval sagas and literature such as Jules Verne’s “Journey to the Centre of the Earth”. But their passing is inevitable, Sigurðsson said. Even if planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions were halted immediately, the glaciers would still disappear - along with a wealth of information - as global temperatures would continue to rise, he said. The ice contains “a thousand years of history” about volcanoes and the climate, he noted, encapsulating “the entire history of Icelanders”. “We expect the glaciers will completely disappear within 200 years, so we are losing five years of history every year,” he said. “Their history is something we must retrieve before they melt.” (rtr)

Headman of Nyambu, Ida Bagus Putu Sunarbawa, said that they started preparing and developing this village for tourism in 2016 and opened to visitors in April 2016. In this process, the community is encouraged not to litter and to process their own plastic waste. “ Every hamlet has their own garbage bank, and we are cooperating with the Customary Village for the transportation of organic trash”, he said. Since establishing the tourism village a year ago, Sunarbawa said that their have been significant changes particularly with regards to waster disposal and the general cleanliness of the village. To express appreciation for thesw changes, the village held a ‘celan telajakan (small front garden) competition as part of celebrations of Indonesia’s 72nd Independence day. Since eco-tourism in Nyambu village has been
developed for special-interest tourists who really want to enjoy the environment, they limit the number of people who can visit so as ot ensure that the natural environment remains intact. “We limit the number of visitors to 13- to 15 at a time”, he said. For both the comfort of visitors and to provide work for the villagers, local guides have been trained. Visitors to Nyambu Village are not allowed to roam on their own but are accompanied by a guide from the time they arrive until their departure. Guests must make advanced reservations as the tourism management team are not on duty 24H a day. “Tourists must schedule their visit here because currently we do not have staff on stand-by full time. They all have other jobs”, he said, adding that this is also for the comfort of visitors. Upon arrival, visitors are greeted with a welcome drink and a briefing about Nyambu Village. From then on they are accompanied by a guide provided by the eco-tourism management. Currently there are only four trained guides in Nyambu. Sunarbawa added that guides from outside the village are welcome to bring their guests here, but added that a local guide is still required to ensure eveyone’s security. “ Local guides know the terrain very well and if something happens they know everyone in the village so it is safer for tourists’, he explained. Initially, they only offered three themes to tourists: nature trekking, cultural activities and cycling. This year, they have added an additional theme forest trekking allowing visitors to see the monkey population. (kmb24)

Hindu schools have troubel getting permit
DENPASAR - Establishing Hindu schools in Bali should be normal. After schools are intended to provide formal education as well as character building, whether they be religious schools, private or public. “Having Hindu schools is good. Having public schools improve their local culture subject matter would be even better. I is a bit difficult for Hindu schools to acquire a permit”, said Deputy Chairman of Commission IV of Bali House of Representatives, I Nyoman Wirya, when asked for his confirmation on Saturday (Aug. 19). Wirya explained that even proposing to have Hindu religion teachers is difficult – let alone establishing a Hindu school. There are in fact very few Hindu religion teachers, but the few times that proposals have been submitted to the Directorate General of Hindu Mass Guidance at the Ministry of Religious Affairs for such teachers, there has been no response. Many of the teachers who are currently teaching Hindu Religion will soon retire. “The recruitment of new teachers is only being done for general subject matter teachers. We have twice requested from the Hindu Mass Guidance department to recruit Hindu religion teachers, however this has yet to be realised”, explained this Golkar politician. Chairman of Commission IV of the Bali House of Representatives, I Nyoman Parta, said that the development of Hindu schools has yet to be seen in Bali – particularly at the basic levels of education. The Ministry of Religious Affairs
has in fact given permits to a few Hindu Schools, they are: Hindu kindergarten Adi Widya, Hindu elementary school (Pratamawidya), Hindu junior high school (Madyama Widya), Hindu high school (Uttama Widya) and Hindu college (Mahawidya). “Students for Hindu elementary schools are graduates of Hindu kindergarden, and Hindu High school students from Hindu Elementary schools and students in Hindu higher Education come form Hindu high Schools. Since there are very few lower level Hindu educational institutions, there is not much we can do to improve the higher levels’”, said this PDI-P politician. According to Parta, PDI-P has already facilitated the organization of several pilot projects for Hindu kindergarten and pre-schools that have proven to be quite popular. “However we do not have an established curriculum yet’ he added. Previously, the PDI-P indeed initiated the implementation of Hindu kindergartens and preschools as well as Balinese language kindergartens/preschools in 6 districts starting in 2017. They were established in districts whose regents PDI-P cadres, namely; Badung, Jembrana, Bangli, Tabanan, Gianyar and Buleleng. Denpasar has yet ot be able to establish such schools due to lack of land. “The establishment of the Hindu preschools and kindergartens as well as Balinese language preschools and kindergartens in Bali in 2017 is part of the national universal development planning in education, customs, religion, traditions and culture, program”, said Chairman of this PDI-P Bali, Dr. I Wayan Koster. According to Koster, the Hindu kindergartens and pre-
schools established in Bali in 2017 are just a pilot project. So far, the largest number of them are in Bangli with a total of 23 followed by Gianyar (14), Badung (12), Tabanan (10), Buleleng (9) and Jembrana (8). Some of these schools have been newly built while others have been modified from preexisting buildings. “Whether these schools are public or private, they are given the same support by both the Ministry o Education and Culture as well as the Ministry of Religious Affairs. In order for this project to run well, the director general of preschools and director general of Hindu mass guidance have disseminated relevant information regarding procedures and administration”, he explained. China’s SOE sends tour group to Bali MANGUPURA - The number of Chinese tourist who visit Bali continues to increase. In fact, Chinese owned enterprise Xian Lian is committed to sending groups to Bali. This year alone they will send over 2,000 tourists. “Since earlier this year, we have started working with Xian Lian, a China’s state-owned enterprise (SOE). This company has been commissioned by the Chinese government to make tour groups to Asian countries, and they chose Indonesia, specifically the ITDC as their sister SOE”, said Director of Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), Abdulbar M. Mansoer, on Friday (Aug. 18) at the signing ceremony for the cooperation between the ITDC and Zhuhai Henqin Xina Lian & Financial Technology Co. Ltd. on Peninsula Island. Mansoer explained that the company agreed to organize groups of tourists from 22 provinces in China. The arrival of 1,000 Chinese tourists will represent the inaugural arrival of groups from China who they plan to handle regularly. “They

Sangsang River planted with thousands of bamboos
GIANYAR - Thousands of bamboo cuttings of the tabah variety (Gigantochloa nigrociliata BUSE-KURZ) were planted along the river basin of Sangsang River on Friday (Aug. 18). The planting of the bamboo that was powered by the Gianyar environment agency and the local community aims to meet the local needs for bamboo both for craft materials and for ceremonial purposes. The planting of 3,030 bamboo cuttings took place in three locations along the Sangsang River, where 1010 cuttings were planted at Sidan village and two other points, 1,010 cuttings at Kesian hamlet (Lebih) and 1,010 cuttings at the downstream areas of Lebih hamlet/village, Gianyar sub-district. When met amid the bamboo planting activity, headman of Sidan, Made Sukra Suyasa, admitted that this area is very suitable for bamboo because of the many steep valleys. He
also explained that this bamboo can serve to provide the raw materials for local handicrafts. “ So far we have been bringing in bamboo from outside of Gianyar. It would be better if we had out own” he said. Suyasa added that he hopes this will help increase the production of bamboo handycrafts. “In Sidan village, there are some bamboo home industries but not very many. Hopefully with an abundance of raw materials, the numbers of crafters will increase” he said. Hamlet chief of Kesian, Lebih, Wayan Kader, conveyed that bamboo is also needed for many ceremonies included for Galungan Day. “Our customary life requires bamboo constantly – especially for ceremonies like ngaben (cremation), temple anniversary and penjor making on Galungan. Bamboo is also used for making temporary shelters for livestock” he added.

Pawirta explained that they chose to plant bamboo because it is easy to plant and serves several functions. When properly maintained a bamboo plant can live 40 years. “Bamboo is also familiar to the public because of its many uses and is very important for the social life of Balinese people”, he added. Taylor Swift goes blank on social media, sending fans into frenzy
LOS ANGELES - Taylor Swift, one of the most popular celebrities on social media, wiped all her accounts on Friday, sending fans into a frenzy over whether the pop singer had been hacked, was preparing to launch a new album, or was about to reinvent herself. Swift, who has 85 million Twitter followers and 102 million Instagram followers, deleted all of her Instagram photos, her posts on Tumblr, and removed her avatar from her Facebook page where all postings prior to December 2015 were missing. The “Blank Space” singer also deleted years of Twitter posts, and her official website showed just a black screen. “I’m scared to go to sleep thanks to Taylor Swift like what if she drops a new song,” tweeted an anxious
fan called Anu using the handle @ shadesoftaylor. Taylor’s publicist did not return calls for comment, but the development follows a busy two weeks for Swift, who earlier this month ended a six month absence from the public spotlight to testify at a high-profile groping trial in Denver, Colorado. Swift, 27, was on Monday awarded the symbolic $1 in damages that she had sought after a federal jury in Denver found that a radio DJ had grabbed her bottom while posing for
a photo with her in 2013. Her unflinching testimony describing the incident was applauded by fans and women’s rights groups for highlighting the issue of sexual assault. Swift later made a donation to the sexual violence campaign and support group Joyful Heart Foundation. LOS ANGELES - A Los Angeles judge on Friday rejected a request by the woman who was raped by director Roman Polanski 40 years ago to have the criminal case against him dismissed. Superior Court Judge Scott Gordon ruled that Polanski remained a fugitive from justice and that the court could not dismiss a case “merely because it would be in the victim’s best interest.”
The ruling follows the first appearance in June in the case by Samantha Geimer, who was 13 years old when Polanski sexually assaulted her in Los Angeles in 1977. The director, who admitted raping Geimer, spent 42 days in pre-trial custody. He then fled the United States, fearing a plea bargain with prosecutors would be overruled and that he would get a lengthy prison term. The “Chinatown” director, who
turned 84 on Friday, has never returned and numerous attempts by his lawyers to strike a deal without him spending more time in prison have failed. “The defendant in this matter stands as a fugitive and refuses to comply with court orders,” Gordon wrote. Geimer went to Los Angeles Superior Court in June pleading for his case to be resolved, saying she had forgiven Polanski years ago and wanted the case put to rest “as an act of mercy to myself and my family.” Geimer, who has three sons and now lives in Hawaii, said in June that Polanski had apologized to her years ago, but that she continued to remain a victim because of media attention each time there was a new development in the case. Gordon on Friday also rejected a request by Polanski’s attorney, Harland Braun, to unseal testimony about the 1977 plea deal. Braun had hoped to use the testimony to persuade European authorities to rescind the international arrest warrant against Polanski. (rtr)

BOSTON - Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Boston on Saturday to protest a “free speech” rally featuring far-right speakers a week after a woman was killed at a Virginia white-supremacist demonstration. Rally organizers had invited several far-right speakers who were confined to a small pen that police set up in the historic Boston Common park to keep the two sides separate. The city avoided a repeat of last weekend’s bloody street battles in Charlottesville, Virginia, where one woman was killed. Police estimated that as many as 40,000 people packed into the streets around the nation’s oldest park. Officials had spent a week planning security for the event, mobilizing 500 police officers, including many on bikes, and placing barricades and large white dump trucks on streets along the park, aiming to deter car-based attacks like those seen in Charlottesville and Europe. The rally never numbered more
than a few dozen people, and its speakers could not be heard due to the shouts of those protesting it and the wide security cordon between the two sides. It wrapped up about an hour earlier than planned. Protesters surrounded people leaving the rally, shouting “shame” and “go home” and occasionally throwing plastic water bottles. Police escorted several rally participants through the crowds, some-
times struggling against protesters who tried to stop them. Some people dressed in black with covered faces several times swarmed rally attendees, including two men wearing the “Make America Great Again” caps from President Donald Trump’s campaign. The violence in Charlottesville triggered the biggest domestic crisis yet for Trump, who provoked ire across the political spectrum for not immediately condemning
white nationalists and for praising “very fine people” on both sides of the fight. On Saturday, Trump on Twitter praised the Boston protesters. “I want to applaud the many protestors in Boston who are speaking out against bigotry and hate. Our country will soon come together as one!” Trump tweeted. “Our great country has been divided for decades. Sometimes you need protest in order to heal, & we will heal, & be stronger than ever before!” ARRESTS, TENSIONS Thirty-three people were arrested, largely for scuffles in which some protesters threw rocks and bottles of urine at police dressed
in riot gear, the Boston Police Department said. “There was a little bit of a confrontation,” Police Commissioner William Evans told reporters, adding that “99.9 percent of the people who were here were here for the right reasons.” Several protesters said they were unsurprised that the “Free Speech” event broke up early.
