LOS ANGELES - Veteran musician Lionel Richie, hiphop star and actor LL Cool J and Cuban-American singer and actress Gloria Estefan will receive the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors this year, CBS network said Thursday. The 40th Kennedy Center Honors, to air on CBS on Dec. 26, is one of the highest awards in American culture, celebrating lifetime achievements through the performing arts. New ‘Game of Thrones’ episode leaks online through HBO partner

THE unaired fourth episode of the new season of HBO’s hit series “Game of Thrones” has been leaked online, the premium channel’s distribution partner Star India said on Friday.

“We take this breach very seriously and have immediately initiated forensic investigations at our and the technology partner’s end to swiftly determine the cause. This is a grave issue and we are taking appropriate legal remedial action” a Star India spokesperson said in a statement. Star India is a subsidiary of Twenty-First Century Fox Inc. The leak of the episode, titled “The Spoils of War,” was separate from a hack on HBO that was disclosed earlier this week, HBO said in a statement. In that incident, the company’s chairman, Richard Plepler, told employees in a Monday email seen by Reuters that the hackers had stolen “proprietary information,” including some programming. Entertainment Weekly reported on Monday that hackers stole 1.5 terrabytes of data, including two unaired episodes of the “Game of Thrones” series. HBO is owned by Time Warner Inc, which is waiting for regulatory approval to sell itself to AT&T Inc in a $85.4 billion deal. (rtr)

“Lucifer” heat wave holds Italy, eastern Europe in fiery grip

SARAJEVO/BELGRADE - Swathes of southern and eastern Europe sweltered in temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104°F) on Friday in a heat wave nicknamed “Lucifer” that has fanned forest fires, triggered weather warning alerts and damaged crops. Italy and the Balkans were worst affected, though areas as far north as southern Poland also basked in abnormally hot temperatures, and European weather hub Meteoalarm issued its highest grade “red” warnings for 10 countries.

High salt need, farmers even threatened to go extinct

SEMARAPURA - The need for salt for consumption as well as business such as for salted fish is large enough. Amid such conditions, the number of salt farmers is getting fewer, even threatened with extinction as happened to Kusamba village, Dawan. No younger generations are willing to continue their business in this coastal area.

A few years ago salt farmers reached 50 families. But in harmony with the passage of time, many are turning to other professions considered to be capable of providing more certain incomes. Now, only 17 families remain to survive and they mostly consist of old people. “Most of us have turned to more promising professions. So, the remaining ones are of old age. It is hard to find out another job, while the younger generation is not going to pursue it. Apparently, we are the surviving ones belonging to the last generation,” said a local salt farmer, Nyoman Renu. Salt production, he continued, indeed tends to fluctuate. In good weather, he can produce 15 to 20 kilograms. However, when the weather is bad, production drops dramatically, even nil. However, behind the relatively stable selling price, this farm can be a livelihood for survival. “Sometimes the production is down, but if seen, this farming could become a breadwinner,” he said. Such condition is also justified by another farmer, Dewa Ketut Candra. This salt farming is no longer favored by younger generation. They prefer to look for other jobs to urban areas. “Now, there are no successors,” he explained. (kmb45)

Pertamini named illegal, Industry and trade agency has no authority to prohibit

BANGLI - The existence of business selling fuel in retail is increasingly mushrooming in the community both in urban areas and rural areas. Lately, this business of selling fuel in retail is growing. Some of the merchants no longer use bottles but a gasoline casting tool resembling at petrol station called as Pertamini.

According to the Head of the Bangli Industry and Trade Agency, Nengah Sudibya, the fuel sales business using Pertamini including those on sale in bottle is illegal. Nevertheless, his agency cannot prohibit the business. “The authority to ban them lies in Pertamina,” he said recently. Sudibya said that his agency can

only give an appeal that Pertamini is illegal. And all this time, the appeal has been delivered to the merchants. Besides, he has also appealed to the refueling station to always put priority to consumers coming with vehicle rather than those bringing a jerrican. In the meantime, when asked about re-calibration of gas station,

Sudibya said it has been routinely carried out by his agency. It is one of the conditions that must be met by gas stations in order to be able to get fuel supply. In performing the calibration, he admitted that his agency cannot do it independently. The industry and trade agency of Bangli still has to cooperate with its counterpart in

Buleleng due to limited human resources and facilities owned. “Going forward to be a region of measurement compliance, we will do calibration to all measurement tools including the water and electric meter as well. It is meant that all consumers can get standard measurement tool,” he said. (kmb40)

Salt becomes classic problem

Farmers need land and use of technology

RIO DE JANEIRO - From the architect. The design of the Museum is inspired by the Carioca culture and through its architecture, explores the relationship between the city and the natural environment. The Museum includes 5,000 square meters of temporary and permanent exhibition space, as well as a 7,600 square meter plaza that wraps around the structure and extends along the dock. The building features large overhangs 75 meters in length on the side facing the square and 45 meters in length on the side facing the sea. These features highlight the extension of the Museum from the dock into the bay. The permanent exhibition is housed

upstairs, and features a roof 10 meters high with panoramic views of Guanabara Bay. The total height of the building is limited to 18 meters, which protects the view from the bay of Sao Bento Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cantilevering roof with its large mobile wings and the facade structure expand almost the full length of the pier emphasizing the extension into the Guanabara Bay, while minimizing the building’s width. A reflection pool surrounding the building on the outside—used to filter water that is being pumped from the bay and released back in from the end of the pier— gives visitors the impression that the Museum is floating. “The

idea is that the building feels ethereal, almost floating on the sea, like a ship, a bird or a plant. Because of the changing nature of the exhibits, we have introduced an archetypal structure inside the building. This simplicity allows for the functional versatility of the Museum, able to accommodate conferences or act as a research space,” said Mr. Calatrava. The building is orientated in the north-south direction, off-center from the pier’s longitudinal eastwest axis, maximizing a continuous landscaping feature containing beautiful gardens, paths and leisure areas along the southern length of the pier. A park walkway around the perimeter of the pier will allow visi-

tors to circumnavigate the Museum, while enjoying panoramic views of the Sao Bento Monastery and the Guanabara Bay. The lower level contains functional and technical rooms, such as the Museum’s administrative offices, educational facilities, research space, an auditorium, a museum store, a restaurant, lobby, archives, storage and a delivery area. Located on the Maua Pier, the Museum of Tomorrow is part of a larger revitalization of Porto Maravilha, the port neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. The project allows for better integration between the Port District and the city center and is helping to make this area one of

the most attractive neighborhoods in the city. The building “is the result of a consistent dialogue. The building was built to be a museum for the future, and an educational unit,” said Mr. Calatrava. The building features sustainable design, incorporating natural energy and light sources. Water from the bay is used to regulate the temperature inside the building; this source also supplies water for the Museum’s surrounding reflecting pools. The Museum also uses photovoltaic solar panels, which can be adjusted to optimize the angle of the sun’s rays throughout the day and generate solar energy to supply the building. (IBP/net)

DENPASAR — Salt issue has become a problem for years and even for dozens of years in Indonesia. On the other hand, Indonesia is an archipelagic country having the largest beach. Thus, Indonesia should have no problem in the salt matters. According to an economic observer and professor at the Faculty of Economics, Udayana University, Prof. Dr. I Wayan Ramantha, the problem is the need between consumption salt and industrial salt that should be met with domestic production. Domestic production met by the potential of beach and so forth is very high, other than for tourism purposes. “However so far, our human resources and technology to produce salt consumption is still very low,” he said. Thus, there are two problems faced by Indonesia namely the human resources and technology. He hoped that in the future the government can help improve the productivity of farmers by facilitating them. The potential of traditional salt in West Bali especially in West Buleleng and Kusamba, Klungkung, just needs to be improved. “At least, their production can supply local needs,” he said. He hoped there will be a focus of coaching by relevant institutions to that way. By that way, it is expected not to import salt. In the meantime, the low price of salt at IDR 500 per kg at the farmer level makes the human resources less interested in pursuing salt farming. According to him, it happens because of economic scale. When the current productivity of

conventional salt farmers can only produce 10-100 kg per day, certainly it is not economical. However, if farmers produce in large-scale, with the help of technology and larger number of labor, eventually farmers can increase their average productivity per year. “For example, it‘s enough to employ three people and the use of technology like water pump instead of carrying the water manually as well as the use of technology to heat in tiered stages. Thus, during rainy season they can still produce with greenhouses and so forth,” he explained. Ultimately, with such simple technology they can get IDR 200,000-IDR 500,000 per day. Automatically they will be interested. If many people are interested in working on this sector, their productivity will increase. After the productivity increases, for the government, it will save foreign exchange, and societies can play their role. Head of the Bali Fishery and Maritime Affairs, I Made Gunaja, said that in addition to weather constraints, the land area also becomes a problem to salt farmers in Bali. In reality, the land in Bali is said to have undergone land conversion into tourism purposes such as hotels and restaurants. However, he admitted that his agency does not have any data related to the changes in land function of salt farmers into restaurants or hotels. “However, based on the facts in the field, there is salt farming land having been converted into a hotel. For example, it happens on Kelating Beach, Tabanan,” he said. (kmb42)

Enliven up Sanur International Kite Festival 2017

DENPASAR — A total of 64 participants from 19 countries and 58 participants from various cities in Indonesia showed off their capability at the opening of the Sanur International Kite Festival 2017 on Saturday (Aug. 5).

In the afternoon, it was performed a colossal puppet performance in the air featuring a play with the theme Bhinneka Tunggal Ika or Unity in Diversity. On that occasion, Rai Mantra highly appreciated to various creative activities in Denpasar city such as the Sanur Village Festival assembled with various activities, including the Sanur International Kite Festival regularly held every year. “In addition to supporting the cultural conservation, the kites also have an economic impact. Moreover, this event can bring in the rare angon abroad,” he said. Such a festival is hoped to continuously be developed and maintained as a medium for cultural strengthening. Kite as a cultural attraction having existed since the past time is expected to keep sustainable in the

hands of creative young people. On that occasion, Rai Mantra embedded a gold pin to the senior figure of rare angon (kite flyers) namely A.A. Rai Giri Bunadhi, Si Nyoman Adnyana, (late) Ketut Mona and Priyono. Committee Chairman of the Sanur International Kite Festival, Kadek Dwi Armika, added that this festival is part of the BritAma Sanur Village Festival denoting one of the kite circuits awaited by the world’s masters. Approximately 2,000 kites are flown throughout the festival. In addition to featuring traditional kites like the bebean (fish-shaped), pecukan (leaf-shaped) and janggan (bird-shaped), this festival also presents creative and contemporary kites. On Saturday morning until afternoon were flown 500 kites and resumed at night by flying 34 kites in a puppet show session in the sky. “Performance of the colossal puppet show in the sky featured the theme Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, denoting the motto of the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) taken from Sutasoma psalmody written by Mpu Tantular,” he said. Chairman of the BritAma Sanur Village Festival, Ida Bagus Gede Sidharta Putra, said this year’s kite festival is increasingly showing its class with the involvement of the world kite masters. SYDNEY - The U.S. Navy and Marine Corps suspended their search and rescue efforts on Sunday for three U.S. Marines missing after their aircraft crashed into the sea off Australia’s northeast coast a day earlier, the U.S. Marine Corps said. The Marine Corps said they had shifted to recovery efforts in coordination with the Australian Defence Force, which could last several months, and had notified the next-of-kin of the three missing Marines. “The transition comes after teams led continuous sustained search efforts supported by aircraft and ships,” the III Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Okinawa, Japan, said. “As the sea state permits, recovery efforts will be conducted to further search, assess and survey the area ...,” they said in a statement. Ospreys have been involved in incidents resulting in deaths or injuries in recent years. Twenty-three other personnel aboard the aircraft had been rescued. BUSINESS BUMPY ROAD China’s goods trade surplus for July, due on Tuesday, looks set to top $46 billion, according to a Reuters poll of economists. That would be the second highest this year. Although the surplus has fallen sharply year on year over the first half of 2017, against the United States it has increased 6.5 percent. “We see a bumpy road ahead for the trade relationship between the two countries”, said Yang Zhao, Nomura’s chief China economist. “But it is unlikely that the two nations will enter a true trade war.” Part of the reason for China’s bigger surplus with the U.S. this year is the better performance of the world’s no. 1 economy, Zhao said. German figures also due on Tuesday are expected to show its goods trade surplus widened too, to 21 billion euros ($24.7 billion) in June from 20.3 billion in May, according to the Reuters poll. Germany had the world’s biggest current account surplus in 2016 at $289 billion and has been under pressure to boost domestic demand to lessen its reliance on exports - not least from European Union peers that want to raise their own competitiveness. Philippines’ Duterte warns miners: “I will tax you to death”

MANILA - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday said he wanted to stop exporting mineral resources and might close the mining sector completely and tax miners “to death” if damage to the environment persisted. “The protection of the environment must be made a priority ahead of mining and all other activities that adversely affect one way or another,” Duterte said in his State of the Nation address, his second since assuming power in June last year. “This policy is non-negotiable.” The Philippines is the world’s biggest supplier of nickel ore and also among the top producers of copper and gold. However, the sector contributes less than 1 percent to the country’s economy, based on data from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau. The country’s miners have been under fire by Duterte’s government for alleged violations that include building mines in prohibited areas like watersheds. Duterte said miners have “considerably neglected” their duty to protect the environment and to repair damage done by mining. “You have to come up with a substitute, either spend to restore the virginity of the source or I will tax you to death,” he said. Duterte also said he wanted all mineral resources extracted from the country to be processed domestically before being exported. “I call on our industrialists, inves-

United Nations bans key N.Korea exports over missile tests

UNITED NATIONS - The United Nations Security Council unanimously imposed new sanctions on North Korea on Saturday that could slash by a third the Asian state’s $3 billion annual export revenue over its two intercontinental ballistic missile tests in July.

The U.S.-drafted resolution bans North Korean exports of coal, iron, iron ore, lead, lead ore and seafood. Taiwan fumes as Indonesia sends fraud suspects to China

TAIPEI - Taiwan has protested to Indonesia for sending more than 100 telecoms fraud suspects, including 22 Taiwan nationals, to China, the self-ruled island said on Thursday, the latest in a series of such deportations. Taiwan, an island China considers a wayward province, has protested to Vietnam, Cambodia and Kenya for doing the same thing. Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Kenya, like all but a shrinking handful of countries in the world, adhere to Beijing’s “one China” policy and do not recognise diplomatic rival Taiwan, whose official name is the Republic of China. China has suspended dialogue with Taipei since June, a month after pro-independence Tsai Ing-wen took office as Taiwan’s president, because Tsai has refused to accept Beijing’s “one China” principle. Indonesia sent 143 suspects to either the Chinese cities of Chengdu or Tianjin on Thursday, the Taiwan foreign ministry said in a statement. Indonesia had cooperated with China to arrest the 143 suspects on Saturday, the statement said. “We request a diplomatic consul visit as well as assistance in identifying the people, and urge Indonesia to handle this justly in accordance with the law as well

as to provide channels for judicial relief to the Taiwan nationals,” the ministry said. Taiwan also emphasized that China and Taiwan should cooperate to investigate cross-border crime. “But China forcibly sending Taiwan nationals to the Chinese mainland completely ignores goodwill and appeals from our side...and impacts the healthy development of cross-straits relations,” Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council said. China’s foreign ministry did not comment on the case on Thursday. Indonesia’s immigration office spokesman Agung Sampurno said all of the 143 suspects were Chinese nationals. Authorities in the Southeast Asian country also had three Taiwanese and one Malaysian in custody related to the fraud case, but they were still under investigation, Sampurno added. China has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control. China’s Nationalists fled to the island after losing the Chinese civil war with the Communists in 1949. Last year, Beijing thanked Kenya for deporting five people from Taiwan to China as part of a crackdown on telecoms fraud, and urged Taiwan to support the action after its foreign ministry protested. Tanjung Priok operates normally despite strike: Minister

JAKARTA - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi has said that Tanjung Priok Port has operated normally, including exportimport activities, despite the workers’ strike at Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT). The strike is planned to be held from August 3 to 10, 2017. “Alhamdulillah (Thank God), the port operations ran well. We hope that it could continue to operate,” Budi said, after inspecting the Greater Jakarta Light Rail Transit (LRT) project near Jagorawi toll road in Jakarta, on Friday.

The minister noted that workers demands would be discussed with the companys management, and the ministry did not have the authority to intervene. The ministry assured that the port could operate normally despite the problem, he asserted. “Therefore, we have communicated with stakeholders through harbormaster. There is a cooperation between JICT team and companies there,” he added.

Budi disclosed that he had not received reports on stagnation in Tanjung Priok Port and complaints from companies until the second day of the strike. The minister has called on companies to submit reports to the ministry if they found difficulties because of the workers’ strike. “I will be all out to improve services in vital facilities. It is the governments task to handle this. We guarantee that it (services) would run normally,” he remarked. Budi has also called on the JICT labor union to stop its action and focus on public services. “I called on the labor union to stop the strike. This is vital facility. We should not go on strike,” he added. More than 650 workers of the JICT at North Jakartas Tanjung Priok port have gone on strike since Thursday, demanding the balance of their bonuses, which they claim had been reduced by 42 percent. The bonuses were cut after the companys profit before tax (PBT) dropped from US$66.3 million in 2015 to $44.2 million in 2016. Workers have also demanded a rescue for JICT as national asset that would be managed by local workers. (ant)

northwest of the Pucak Tedung Temple, there is a small temple called Sekartaji Temple with only two buildings, namely the shrine of Batur Sari and Paruman Pancaresi. Existence of this temple is closely associated with Pucak Tedung. Literally, the Pucak Tedung is derived from two words. In Balinese, pucak means the highest point of plateau, while tedung is a kind of sacred umbrella. So far, the etymology on the name of Pucak Tedung has not been found in any palm-leaf manuscripts or chronicles. Mythologically, it is said that in the past there was a leader of Hinduism named Danghyang Nirartha or Bhatara Sakti Wawu Rawuh made a pilgrimage from Pulaki to eastern part of the Island of Bali. Among his journey, he took a rest on the

highest point of a plateau (Balinese people usually call it pucak). When he resumed the journey, his umbrella was left behind on the peak. Hence, the plain is called Pucak Tedung and the temple established is called Pucak Tedung. During the glory of Mengwi kingdom around the seventeenth century whose territory got to the region of North Badung, the supervision or maintenance of Pucak Tedung was submitted to Carangsari Palace. Then, Carangsari Palace handed over the supervision and maintenance to Kerta Palace. In the seventeenth century, Carangsari Palace developed its territory where an offspring named I Gusti Ngurah Rai moved to Petang village and settled there. Since Kerta Palace had no descendant, the supervision and

maintenance of Pucak Tedung was then submitted to Petang Palace, denoting a fraction of Carangsari Palace. In the meantime, paraphernalia such as holy bell was still kept in Kerta Palace. In the administration of I Gusti Ngurah Rai at Petang village, there was division of the territory of customary village and supporting devotees (pangemong) of the Pucak Tedung Temple. They are the Sulangai village, Munduk Damping customary village, Lipah customary village, Sandakan customary village, Angantiga customary village, Batulantang customary village, Kerta customary village and Petang customary village. Aside from the customary village communities mentioned above, during the temple festival

or piodalan at Pucak Tedung many pilgrims from outside Petang subdistrict also come to say prayers to the temple. Every temple in Bali has piodalan or temple festival organized differently. There are temples whose festival fall once a year (based on Balinese lunar year) or every six months or 210 days (pawukon year). Piodalan at Pucak Tedung is conducted every six months, falling on Saturday Kliwon Krulut or Tumpek Krulut. On the piodalan, sanctified effigy of the deity is carried in melasti (purificatory rite) procession to Beji Temple. After returning from the Beji Temple, it takes a rest at Sekartaji Temple. Literally, this sojourn or short break is just like tidying up clothes before entering a house. (kmb)

LONDON - South Africa’s Luvo Manyonga said he was “over the moon” after winning the World Championship long jump title on Saturday, making up for the disappointment of missing out on an Olympic gold in Rio. Manyonga, who only returned to formal competition last year after overcoming a drug addiction, led the final from the second round with a leap of 8.48 metres - the third best mark of 2017. The 26-year-old held off the challenge of American Jarrion Lawson, who in his first senior championships jumped a seasonbest 8.44 in the final round to claim silver.

The bronze was taken by Manyonga’s compatriot Ruswahl Samaai, the leader in the Diamond League standings, who jumped 8.32. “This gold medal makes me feel over the moon. I have been praying to get this gold medal,” Manyonga said. “The world record is my next goal. Ruswahl and me are pushing each other through the events. I am the best in the world - this sounds great.” Manyonga, a junior champion in 2010, suffered numerous personal setbacks in recent years. in 2012 for testing positive for the recreational drug tik - the local variant of crystal methamphetamine. It was only PSG’s fourth win in its last 12 season-opening games in Ligue 1. World-record signing Neymar was ineligible to play because of paperwork issues and PSG coach Unai Emery opted for a 4-3-3 formation with Pastore and Angel Di Maria supporting Cavani. The French league did not receive his international transfer certificate from the Spanish federation before Friday night’s deadline, despite his 222 million euro ($262 million) move from Barcelona being completed the previous day. “All I know is that the club did everything to have the player’s transfer ratified,” Emery said. “He prepared for the game with the group, we waited until the very end. I don’t know if Spain did everything, but PSG did all it could,” Neymar did not play but he gave fans something to cheer about during his official presentation before the game.
