LONDON - Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger has released two politically charged songs targeting what he sees as the uncertainty and surrealism permeating politics in the age of Brexit and Donald Trump.

One song, titled “England Lost”, represents Jagger’s mocking take on Britain’s split from the European Union. The second, “Get a Grip”, describes an “upside down” world full of “lunatics and clowns”. Jagger, 74, said on Facebook he had started writing the songs a few weeks ago in his first solo work since 2011. The first song is told through the metaphor of a soccer fan who has watched England lose at a match he did not want to go to in the first place. “I went to see England but it wasn’t there/ I think I lost it down the back of my chair/ I think I’m losing my imagination/ I’m tired of talking about immigration.” Later he adds: “Had a girl in Lisbon, a girl in Rome/ Now I’ll have to stay at home/ So lock the shutters, bolt the doors/London’s gonna be like Singapore.” In the second song, Jagger rails against people stuffing their pockets and being on the take. The final line of the verse is a dig at what critics say is the British government’s approach to Brexit: to both have its cake and eat it. Playing with fire: Czech artist creates steel portraits with flame

PRAGUE - Czech artist Ladislav Vlna has swapped his brush for a blowtorch as he ‘paints’ with fire to create artworks that change according to lighting. Vlna’s self-titled metallurgic painting technique results in surprisingly delicate and detailed pieces, mostly portraits or figures, with oxyacetylene torches. The 40-year-old artist begins by painting a draft upon a steel surface and then carves, sharpens and polishes the basic image into it before

putting a flame to the engraving which alters its color, depending on the temperature. This process gives the piece its unique appearance. “I am painting using fire instead of a paintbrush. I am extracting the colors from inside the steel with heat and fire.” The appearance of each painting is affected by the light reflected onto the metal’s surface. By creating shapes within the metal, it manipulates the light to emphasize the unique ‘brushstrokes’ the fire

has molded. “The picture placed on the same place looks different in the morning and in evening depending on the light changing”, he said. Each piece takes Vlna weeks to complete, some have sold for up to 8,000 euro ($9,400). He spent 15 years perfecting the technique, through trial and error. In addition to his fire works, he also paints watercolors, illustrates children’s books and creates sculptures. (rtr)

Venezuelans vote on all-powerful assembly

CARACAS - Venezuelans on Sunday began voting for a constitutional super-body expected to hand sweeping new powers to ruling Socialist Party officials and potentially extend their unpopular rule. President Nicolas Maduro, widely disliked for overseeing an unraveling of the economy, has promised the assembly will restore peace after four months of opposition protests during which more than 115 people have been killed. Maduro, who has been heckled at recent public outings, cast his vote around 6 a.m. on Sunday with little fanfare. Opposition parties are boycotting what they call a rigged election while their sympathizers plan demonstrations across the country during the day - raising the prospect of violent clashes with security forces. Critics say the assembly will allow Maduro to dissolve the opposition-run Congress,

delay future elections and rewrite electoral rules to prevent the socialists from being voted out. The vote, which follows the postponement of regional elections and Maduro’s repeated refusal to heed decisions by Congress, has brought global condemnation. The United States, which is the largest market for OPEC member Venezuela’s oil, last week sanctioned 13 Socialist Party leaders, in part as a

response to the election. President Donald Trump’s administration has vowed additional economic measures if the vote takes place. Neighboring Colombia says it will not recognize the results. “By tomorrow, it will be clear that this was not just a constitutional fraud but also the biggest historical mistake that Maduro and his gang could have made,” opposition leader Freddy Guevara told

Maduro says he is the victim of right-wing governments around the world and blames the country’s economic malaise - from food and medicine shortages to triple-digit inflation - on an “economic war” by his adversaries. Congestion in Kuta, govt asked to take action soon

MANGUPURA - Congestion in Kuta and Legian has not been able to be addressed today. This needs to get serious attention from related parties because Kuta as a tourist area of the world surely draws the attention.

When confirmed, chief of Kuta customary village, Wayan Swarsa, said that actually the most serious cause of congestion in Kuta originates from Tuban roundabout. He said that congestion occurs at the location will affect the traffic condition in the north along the Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai. Certainly this also affects the traffic in Tuban area. “If congestion occurs, automatically Kuta will also face similar congestion,” he said. According to him, some points indeed have high density of traffic and slow movement, like in Legian chiefly in the Ground Zero area. In the area, most traffic congestions are triggered by the violating taxis, usually waiting for passengers in the area, especially at 12:00 noon. Currently, this condition has started to be regulated and disciplined by customary village. It does not deny that the taxi needed by passengers should also be considered because there is a need for tourists wishing to go out to look for night entertainment. Therefore, currently the taxi in the area has been arranged by village authority, and is not allowed to wait for passengers on the left side of the road. “Without being regulated, it will certainly lead to complaints

addition, the rules for the size of buses allowed to enter must also be specified, if violating they must be ticketed. The underpass construction, addition of central parking to railway development plan as a mode of transportation becomes a number of schemes to overcome the traffic congestion. As admitted by the Head of the Badung Transportation Agency, A.A. Rai Yuda Dharma, the congestion issue in Kuta has often been featured in discussion every time approaching a long holiday. This condition is the impact of developing tourism in Badung. Therefore, it is planned for the addition of central parking. “We will add a central parking in the Kuta area. This effort is to overcome congestion during long holiday season. However, we will coordinate in advance with a number of community leaders in Kuta to discuss about the addition of the central parking,” he said. He said that coordination with local community leaders is meant to find a location remaining possible for accommodating visitors to Kuta parking. “It (parking lot-Ed) is much needed in Kuta. This still becomes our attention because the obstacle is related to the land now,” he explained. Previously, the Badung government had planned to build hydraulic parking, but once again it was hampered by land availability. Nevertheless, he will continue to study the problem of this central parking for long term. “The full capacity of central parking in Kuta is also caused by a number of hotels that only provide limited spaces for parking needs,” he said. This bureaucrat from Kerobokan mentioned has conducted a raid with Badung municipal police. Results of the raid indicated that cheap hotels do not provide adequate parking space for their guests, so the vehicles should be parked on highway. “Parked vehicles spill over to the highways on Kuta Beach so that congestion is inevitable,” he said. It means that we can provide information for the public related to traffic conditions before they travel,” he said. People can get information on traffic condition from their smartphones before they travel. Thus, they can choose the safe, convenient and smooth routes based on the infrastructure monitoring in the form of intelligent transport system. He explained that intelligent transport system was inspired by the ATCS. It is a part of intelligent transport system, but further it is developed by installing surveillance cameras, traffic volume, speed in the road sections and intersections so that traffic performance can always become up to date and be informed to community of road users. “As other functions, it can also be used to monitor accidents, traffic congestion and so on. By that way, the officers can immediately take action,” he explained. On the other hand, a legislator of the Badung House of Representatives, proposed the construction of trains connecting the area of North Badung to South Badung. Proposal of this public transportation development is conveyed by the PDI-P Faction in the Badung House of Representatives. Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the Badung House of Representatives, Nyoman Satria, said that PDI-P Faction encouraged the local government to immediately make a study on the design of public transportation for the entire region of Badung. “This is to connect between the area of North Badung and South Badung. On that account, if possible, it will be established a railway between the southern and northern end of the Badung district,” he said. He said that railway transportation is to answer various public complaints related to the crowdedness of transportation in Badung. To get to these two areas will take approximately 1 to 2 hours. “As the complaint experienced by the people all this time, they take one to two hours to arrive at the Badung civic center in Mangupura,” he said. Responding to the proposal, the Regent of Badung, I Nyoman Giri Prasta, admitted to agree that in the future the transportation development will lead to rail transport. The construction of railway will become

a necessity in the future. For that purpose, this politician from Pelaga (Petang) wanted to pioneer the construction of train in Bali from Badung. “That’s a good idea. In the meantime, Secretary of Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI) of Bali, Putu Alit Suthanaya, Ph.D., had confidence that railway development is a new item needs to be studied more profoundly. Moreover, the passenger railway system operating in the urban area is just one of the solutions to cope with congestion in the area of Kuta. The urgent thing that local government should do is to prohibit the construction of new hotels and restaurants in the area. “Indeed, it is very possible to build the light rail transit (LRT—Ed) in Kuta, as long as this area is made free from private motor vehicles. The construction permit of new hotel and restaurant must also be stopped because it has been very crowded, so that congestion problem should be resolved from two sides,” he said. He explained that the Sarbagita master plan 2004 has agreed that Kuta area is made free from private motor vehicles. Vehicles that may operate in the area are licensed motor vehicles in accordance with the parking capacity of each hotel. Then, other vehicles are directed to park in central parking lot. “In the meantime, circulation in the area utilizes public transportation. This public transportation can be anything, including the LRT connected directly to Ngurah Rai Airport because the movement of passengers from Kuta to the airport is very high,” he said. This academician from the Udayana University agreed that reducing population density becomes a solution to cope with congestion in Kuta. Therefore, the LRT construction plan must be accompanied with development restrictions. “In other words, attempt to avoid the accumulation of activities and density in Kuta and the surrounding areas. The plan of Denpasar municipality to implement a vehicle-free policy on Jalan Kamboja cannot be realized. Actually, the plan was already designed in 2007 started with the arrangement of Jalan Kamboja with the installation of paving block and mosaic stones. Unfortunately, until now the intention has not been realized. Instead, there is violation of parking on the road. A member of the Denpasar House of Representatives, A.A. Ngurah Gede Widiada, when met at his office on Friday (Jul. 27), acknowledged the plan was initiated by the Denpasar municipality long time ago considering the area becomes the center for education in Denpasar. However, the constraint causing the plan cannot be unrealized is the lack of central parking. “It is caused by the absence of central parking. When wishing to free Jalan Kamboja from passing vehicles, there must be provision of adequate parking space. Otherwise, where should people park?” asked this politician from Peguyangan. Another assessment was given by a member of Commission III, Wayan Suadi Putra. This people’s representative from Sidakarya assessed the pedestrian failure in Denpasar happens as the concept cannot run. He said that pedestrian concept can only be passed through by walking people. However, pedestrian in Denpasar is still traversed by vehicles. “This causes the failure of the pedestrian concept in Denpasar,” he said. Monitoring in the field indicated that pedestrian on Jalan Kamboja is still passed through by a lot of vehicles. Other than passed through by vehicles, the area is also taken advantage for parking a lot of vehicles. Vehicles are parked by the owners on the road up to two rows.

As a result, the path often experiences crowdedness. Moreover, the parking violation on the road is also complained by the public as often triggers congestion. Division Head of Control and Operations of the Denpasar Transportation Agency, I Ketut Sriawan, when asked for his confirmation stated that his agency has written to schools in order to ban students from parking on the street. They are required to park their vehicles in school area. However, admittedly, there are schools remaining to park on the street. This condition cannot be avoided because schools do not have adequate parking lot. Sriawan said that currently his division is reviewing school shuttle service to avoid the number of students from using private vehicles to school. With the school shuttle service, the students may carry Trans Sarbagita bus vehicle to central parking that will be provided by the transportation agency. From this central parking, the students will be transported by shuttle service to their school. “So, no students will park on the street,” said Sriawan. Previously, the ministry of transportation has frequently taken action against parking offenders on the street as was done on Jalan Kamboja, Denpasar. The officials of the transportation agency along with village-assigned military and regional military personnel found dozens of traffic violations, including the parking of motorcycles and cars. If the bus is big, the cost will be bigger. Then, the load factor includes the bus capacity. When many passengers can be transported, the seats available can be fully occupied. But if lonely, the bus with capacity of 50 seats and filled in 10 seats will look empty. Replacement with smaller bus will become one of the alternatives,” he explained. Sunarya added that another alternative is to rest the bus during lonely passenger hours and set the interval among the buses in their operations. This measure is considered to be able to streamline the cost. On the other hand, he also responded to the criticism against the Trans Sarbagita often considered to cause congestion. Actually, Trans Sarbagita is a very visionary program to overcome traffic jam. “There are many other buses. If there are buses getting out of order, well, we may become one of the causes. Courier of crystal meth smuggling arrested in Gilimanuk

NEGARA - The officers at Gilimanuk Harbor managed to arrest a courier of crystal meth smuggling from Java to Bali by land, on Friday afternoon (Jul. 28). As information obtained, the arrest was conducted by the Bali police narcotic investigation unit with CTOC taskforce, inteltek and Jembrana police narcotic unit around 11:45. The arrest was originated from the information received by the officers from the community. From the investigation and surveillance carried out, the officers successfully arrested S, 40, from Denpasar who was passing at post 2 or the entrance of Bali at Gilimanuk Harbor by riding a black Honda Vario motorcycle with license plate P 2764 YI. When a thorough examination was made and performed, two large clip packages were found in which contained clear crystals suspected to be 203.00 grams gross or 200.16 grams net (2 ounces and 16 grams). The narcotic belonging to crystal meth was placed under his motorcycle engine lid with packed in such a way that it is not visible by the officers. After finding the illicit goods, the perpetrator was directly secured by the officers. In addition to arresting the perpetrator, the joint officers also managed to secure evidence other than drugs, namely in the form of a unit of black Honda Vario motorcycle with license plate P 2764 YI, Lois blue jeans jacket, a unit of black Nokia and a unit of black silver Samsung mobile phone. The modus operandi applied is that someone through mobile phone asked the perpetrator to take goods in Surabaya to be brought to Bali with the payment of as much as IDR 3 million. As the information obtained, after the arrest, the officers developed the case by searching at the house of perpetrator’s mother-in-law in Banyuwangi but the result was nothing. Chief of Jembrana Police, Priyanto Priyo Hutomo, confirmed the arrest. The case is handled at the Bali police. “We are backing up the handling,” he said. (120)

In the meantime, Chairman of Aprindo Bali, Gusti Ketut Sumardayasa, also encouraged the use of non-cash transactions to its members. Similarly, he requested that non-cash service providers and telecommunications networks to cope with the frequent failure of transactions due to networks and the systems. SYDNEY - Security has been increased at Australian airports after police foiled “Islamicinspired” plans for a bomb attack on an aircraft during counter-terrorism raids in which four men were arrested on Saturday, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) have confirmed. “In recent days, law enforcement has become aware of information that suggested some people in Sydney were planning to commit a terrorist act using an improvised device,” AFP commissioner Andrew Colvin said during a press conference with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Sunday, adding: “We do believe it is Islamicinspired terrorism. SEOUL - North Korea said on Saturday it had conducted another successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that proved its ability to strike America’s mainland, drawing a sharp warning from U.S. President Donald Trump and a rebuke from China. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally supervised the midnight launch of the missile on Friday night and said it was a “stern warning” for the United States that it would not be safe from destruction if it tries to attack, the North’s official KCNA news agency said. North Korea’s state television broadcast pictures of the launch, showing the missile lifting off in a fiery blast in darkness and Kim cheering with military aides. “The test-fire reconfirmed the reliability of the ICBM system, demonstrated the capability of making a surprise launch of the ICBM in any region and place any time, and clearly proved that the whole U.S. mainland is in the firing range of the DPRK missiles, (Kim) said with pride,” KCNA said. DPRK is short for the North’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The launch comes less than a month after the North conducted its first ICBM test in defiance of years of efforts led by the United States, South Korea and Japan to rein in Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons ambitions. The North conducted its fourth and fifth nuclear tests last year and has engaged in an unprecedented pace of missile development that experts said significantly advanced its ability to launch longer-range ballistic missiles. “By threatening the world, these weapons and tests further isolate North Korea, weaken its economy,

BUSINESS Venezuela money supply surges 10 percent in one week, fastest in 25 years CARACAS - In a portend of steepening inflation in crisisstricken Venezuela, money supply surged 10 percent in just one week earlier this month, its largest single-week rise in a quarter of a century. Venezuela is undergoing a major economic crisis, with millions suffering food shortages, monthly wages worth only the tens of U.S. dollars, and soaring inflation -- though no official data is available. The central bank said late on Friday the total amount of local currency in circulation -- known as M2 by economists - as of July 21 was 27.3 trillion bolivars, up 9.66 percent from the previous week. In October 1992, the figure rose 10.84 percent in a single week. The exponential rise in M2, the sum of cash, together with checking, savings, and other deposits, means an exponential rise in the amount of currency circulating. Venezuela’s money supply is up 384 percent in the last year. In contrast, the United States’ money supply is up 5.5 percent in the same period. Coupled with a decline in the output of goods and services, that has accelerated inflation. While M2 may seem an obscure technical indicator, the figure was routinely published by newspapers in Venezuela, whose oildependent economy has been dogged by inflation in the past. Venezuelans are forced to carry huge bundles of cash to make basic purchases - if they can afford to do so given weekly price rises on many goods. This week also saw Venezuela’s black market exchange rate surge past 10,000 bolivars per dollar. When President Nicolas Maduro came to power in April 2013, it was at 24 per dollar. A thousand dollars worth of local currency then would be worth just over $2 now. Maduro says he faces an “economic war” waged by the opposition and Washington. Related to traditions often practiced in Hinduism, either in each family, village or district, it has its own characteristics. As in the Balinese nomenclature, a person who has get married will certainly have children, then have grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and the next descendant according to the Balinese family nomenclature. Various traditions are held to remember the family order. One of them is through tradition of giving betel leaves with betel nut or better known as the tradition of ngampin kumpi by greatgrandmother (kumpi lingsir) to its great grandchild (kumpi alit). This tradition is very rarely implemented and even many people do not know because currently it is rare for parents who live longer to even have a great grandchild. However, this tradition remains often to be carried out at villages such as at Rendang in Karangasem. Ni Wayan Logég, a great grandmother who is staying healthy and having a great grandchild, said that at Rendang village, Karangasem and the surrounding areas, the ngampin tradition is still often carried out. Turkish women march in rights protest in Istanbul

ISTANBUL - Hundreds of Turkish women marched in the country’s biggest city Istanbul on Saturday to protest against the violence and animosity they face from men demanding they dress more conservatively.

The march, dubbed “Don’t Mess With My Outfit”, started in the Kadikoy district on the Asian side of the city. Women chanted slogans and carried denim shorts on hangers as examples of the type of clothing some men say they find unacceptable. “We will not obey, be silenced, be afraid. We will win through resistance,” the crowds chanted, holding up posters and LGBT rainbow flags. Istanbul has long been seen as a relatively liberal city for women and gay people. But critics say President Tayyip Erdogan and his Islamist-rooted AK Party have shown little interest in expanding rights for minorities, gays and women, and are intolerant of dissent. Protesters say there has been an increasing number of verbal and physical attacks against women for their choice of clothing. In one incident in June, a young woman, Asena Melisa Saglam, was attacked by a man on a bus in

Istanbul for wearing shorts during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Video of the incident showed the man hitting her while the bus driver watched. “Are you not ashamed of dressing like this during Ramadan?” the footage showed the man saying. In another incident, Canan Kaymakci, was harassed on the street in Istanbul when a man accused her of wearing provocative clothing, saying she should be careful because she was “turning people on”. Another woman, Aysegul Terzi, was called a devil and kicked by a man on a public bus, also for wearing shorts. Footage showed the man telling her that those who wear shorts “should die”. Saturday’s march was joined by several members of the gay and transgender community, after Istanbul’s pride march was banned by authorities late in June. Since Erdogan took office nearly 15 years ago, restrictions on wearing the headscarf imposed by Turkey’s secular 20th century leaders have been eased and more women in the mainly Muslim country have chosen to wear it. Saturday’s march saw several women protesting against the criticism they have faced for choosing to wear headscarves. “Don’t meddle with my headscarf, shorts, outfits,” read posters held by participants. Trump to sign Russia sanctions, Moscow retaliates WASHINGTON - U.S. President Donald Trump will sign legislation that imposes sanctions on Russia, the White House said on Friday, after Moscow ordered the United States to cut hundreds of diplomatic staff and said it would seize two U.S. diplomatic properties in retaliation for the bill. The U.S. Senate had voted almost unanimously on Thursday to slap new sanctions on Russia, forcing Trump to choose between a tough position on Moscow and effectively dashing his stated hopes for warmer ties with the country or to veto the bill amid investigations in possible collusion between his campaign and Russia. By signing the bill into law, Trump can not ease the sanctions against Russia unless he seeks congressional approval. Moscow’s retaliation, announced by the Foreign Ministry on Friday, had echoes of the Cold War. If confirmed that Russia’s move would affect hundreds of staff at the U.S. embassy, it would far outweigh the Obama administration’s expulsion of 35 Russians in December. The legislation was in part a response to conclusions by U.S. intelligence agencies that Russia meddled in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, and to further punish Russia for its annexation of Crimea in 2014. Late on Friday, the White House issued a statement saying Trump would sign the bill after reviewing the final version. The statement made no reference to Russia’s retaliatory measures.

Russia had been threatening retaliation for weeks. Its response suggests it has set aside initial hopes of better ties with Washington under Trump, something the U.S. leader, before he was elected, had said he wanted to achieve. JAKARTA - The current salt scarcity in Indonesia needs to be investigated to check involvement of salt business mafia to increase the price of the essential commodity. According to a researcher, it need to be explored whether the scarcity occurs because of a distribution game played by the mafia or because of a lack of salt stock in storage warehouses and markets. “If the scarcity is caused by the game, then the government needs to take firm actions and sanctions for the perpetrators,” Destructive Fishing Watch (DFW) Indonesia researcher, Subhan Usman, said in Jakarta on Saturday (July 29). Usman suggested that the government should immediately undertake a thorough reform of all aspects of national salt business performance. Comprehensive reforms cover many issues ranging from limited land and poor quality salt that local producers produce to low productivity, he continued. In addition, it is also necessary to update the use of traditional technology and anticipate anomalies that have occurred during the last two years, he said. “The problem of limited salt land is a fundamental issue that must be intervened through the economic equality policy currently implemented by the government through the distribution of land to salt farmers,” he stated. He stated there is no need to panic about the current salt scarcity in Indonesia because there will shortly

be salt harvests in some areas in the country. “The government and the public need not panic about the scarcity of salt because this is only temporary,” Usman said. Some salt centers in some areas are currently approaching the harvest period that is expected to soon meet market needs. However, he added, the government is considering it necessary to form a team to investigate the scarcity of salt stock in the market. In order to overcome the shortage of salt in the country, the government will import the commodity. Trade Minister Lukita said his ministry had issued licenses to 26 companies doing business in various industrial fields, such as pharmacies, chlor-alkali plant (CAP), and paper industries, to import industrial salt. It is forecast that the annual demand of the salt industry would reach 2.3 million tons. Indonesia still depends on imports to meet its need since domestic salt production is not yet adequate. However, a non-governmental organization leader has voiced that the government should not accord priority to the importation of salt to overcome the salt crisis. Executive Director of the Center for Maritime Studies for Humanity Abdul Halim noted the governments policy of importing salt to overcome the commoditys scarcity in the country is not expected to become a main priority in the face of and for seeking a solution to the salt problem. Southeast Asian states vow cooperation on ‘growing’ militant threat

MANADO - Southeast Asian nations will cooperate more closely with intelligence and law enforcement authorities from the Middle East amid “grave concerns” about an elevated threat from Islamic State (IS) in the region.

Representatives from four Southeast Asian nations, Australia and New Zealand met in the Indonesian city of Manado on Saturday to develop a response to the increased danger posed by IS, highlighted by the occupation of parts of the southern Philippines city of Marawi by militants owing allegiance to the group. The battle has sparked alarm that as IS suffers reversals in Iraq and Syria, it is seeking to create a stronghold in the region, buttressed by Southeast Asian fighters returning from the Middle East and other militants inspired by the ultra-radical group and the Marawi conflict. Describing the regional threat from Islamist militants as growing and rapidly evolving, a joint statement by the participants called for enhanced information sharing, as well as cooperation on border control, deradicalisation, law reform and countering Islamists’ prolific use of social media to plan attacks and lure recruits. “We must face the threat together,” said Wiranto, Indonesia’s co-ordinating minister for security. The meeting was co-hosted by Indonesia and Australia. The other participants were Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei and New Zealand. The main initiative was a law enforcement dialogue to be co-hosted by the Indonesian and Australian police forces in August bringing together key stakeholders affected by IS. Two senior law enforcement sources at the Manado meeting said countries from the Middle East, including Turkey, would attend the summit to kick off cooperation across the two regions. Islamic State has a dedicated military unit made up of hundreds of Southeast Asian fighters in Syria and

Iraq led by Indonesian militant Bahrumsyah. According to Indonesian police, there are 510 Indonesian supporters of Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, including 113 women. About 20 Islamist fighters from Indonesia are believed by counter-terrorism authorities to be fighting in Marawi, a predominantly Muslim city on the Philippines island of Mindanao which has been a hotbed of Islamist unrest for decades and a magnet for militants from around the region. One of leaders of the militants in Marawi is a Malaysian Islamic studies lecturer, Ahmad Mahmud, who arranged financing and the recruitment of foreign fighters.

Poor Record of Cooperation

While the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the multilateral regional forum made up of 10 nations, has long had a framework for cooperation on combating violent extremism, analysts and officials say coordination has been poor. A report last week from the Jakarta-based Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict identified “formidable obstacles” to greater cooperation between Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, the front-line states facing the Islamist threat in Southeast Asia. “These include the deep-seated political distrust between the Philippines and Malaysia that impedes information sharing; concern from Indonesia and Malaysia police about mixed loyalties of local counterparts in Mindanao, especially given clan and family links; and institutional disjunctures that give the lead in counter-terrorism to the police in Indonesia and Malaysia but to the military in the Philippines,” the report said. After more than two months of intense fighting, IS-aligned militants still control part of Marawi. Over 600 people have been killed, including 45 civilians and 114 members of the security forces. Like many young soccer players in Brazil, Camila grew up idolizing Marta. Now her hero is her mentor. Marta, the five-time FIFA World Player of the Year, has developed a close bond with 22-year-old Camila, who just scored her first international goal. The duo plays for both the Brazilian national team and the Orlando Pride of the National Women’s Soccer League.

“She’s always advising me with many things inside the field and outside the field,” Camila said through a translator. “It’s always good when you have the best player in the world by your side, and it’s very motivating to have her by my side and helping me in the national team and also in Orlando.” Asked if she’s proud of her young pupil, Marta didn’t hesitate to exclaim: “Of course I am!” Known by just her first name, Marta Vieira da Silva has scored 109 goals in 114 international appearances with the Brazilian national team. The 31-year-old has the most World Cup goals among women with 15 — one shy of the World Cup record for men and women. She also has 10 Olympic goals, tying her for third on the career list with former U.S. star Abby Wambach. Marta, once called “Pele in skirts,” grew up playing street soccer with the boys in Dois Riachos, a town in eastern Brazil. She was just 17 when she appeared at the 2003 World Cup, held in the United States. She went on to win an unprecedented five straight FIFA World Player of the Year awards. While Brazil has been slow to embrace the women’s game, Marta won hearts last summer when her home country hosted the Olympics. Some even crossed out Neymar’s name on their No. 10 Brazil jerseys and added Marta’s. The Orlando Pride made a splash earlier this year when they signed Marta to a multi-year deal. She’s also already had a significant impact on the team with eight goals and four assists in 14 games.

Camila, whose full name is Camila Martins Pereira, signed with the Pride in December after making her debut with the senior Brazilian national team a few months earlier. Originally brought in as a defender, Pride coach Tom Sermanni shifted Camila to a more offensive role. Marta suggested Camila is naturally gifted. “She’s had so much potential. When I say, ‘Camila, go do what you want,’ it’s because Camila has so much she can do. Here, in the national team and there, in Orlando, team, she looks like — you know when you see a soccer player and you think she’s grown up with the talent,” Marta said. One of Camila’s goals with the Pride was a dramatic 40-yarder in a 4-2 victory over the Houston Dash, which won NWSL Goal of the Week honors. It was very much like the one she scored Thursday in a 1-1 draw with Japan at the Tournament of Nations. That 25-yard blast was Camila’s first international goal. The similarity between the two goals wasn’t lost on Marta. “I was just so happy because Emily (Brazil coach Emily Lima) talked to us like two days ago and said, ‘Why don’t you do this here with the national team?’ Because she’d seen so many games in Orlando,” Marta said. The Tournament of Nations continues on Sunday in San Diego. Brazil will face the top-ranked U.S. women, who lost 1-0 on Thursday night to Australia in Seattle. The four-nation round-robin tournament wraps up next Thursday in Carson, California. The two spoke following the tournament’s opening game against Japan in Seattle, with Marta at times jumping in to finish Camila’s sentences and the two sharing personal asides in Portuguese. “We need to see how far away Brazil is from other teams. So now we have this big opportunity to play against the USA, Australia and Japan, three big teams,” Marta said. “And see what we need to be stronger day after day.
