LOS ANGELES - Angelina Jolie responded to growing backlash over the casting process for her latest film, saying she was “upset” that an improvised scene during auditions had been misconstrued as taking real money away from impoverished children.

In a Vanity Fair interview published last week about her film “First They Killed My Father,” Jolie described a game played by the casting directors with the young Cambodian children auditioning for the lead role of Loung Ung. Jolie, a special envoy for the United Nations refugee agency, told Vanity Fair she looked for her lead star in orphanages, circuses and slum schools. In the casting, a child was placed in front of money on a table, asked to think of what they needed it for and to snatch it away. Jolie would then pretend to catch them, and the child would have to lie about why they stole the money. “I am upset that a pretend exercise in an improvisation, from an actual scene in the film, has been written about as if it was a real scenario,” Jolie, who directed the film, said in a statement on Sunday. “The suggestion that real money

was taken from a child during an audition is false and upsetting. I would be outraged myself if this had happened.” Users on social media slammed Jolie’s casting game as cruel and exploiting impoverished children. Vanity Fair reporter Evgenia Peretz called the casting game “disturbing in its realism” in the profile, while Kayla Cobb at pop culture website Decider.com compared the game to a psychological thriller. “Everyone should know better than to literally dangle money in front of impoverished children ... no movie is worth psychologically traumatizing multiple children,” Cobb wrote. “First They Killed My Father” is about the 1970s Khmer Rouge regime under which more than 1 million people died. Clooneys to help 3,000 Syrian refugees go to school in Lebanon

U N I T E D N AT I O N S George and Amal Clooney said on Monday they would help 3,000 Syrian refugee children go to school this year in Lebanon, where the United Nations says 200,000 children are not receiving an education after fleeing the war in neighboring Syria. The Clooney Foundation for Justice said it has teamed up with Google and HP Inc to help the U.N. children’s agency UNICEF and the Lebanese Ministry of Education open seven so-called “second shift” schools for Syrian refugee children. Lebanon has more than 1 million Syrian refugees, includ-

ing nearly 500,000 children. It is educating Syrian children in public schools through a “second shift” system of additional afternoon classes exclusively for them. “We don’t want to lose an entire generation because they had the bad luck of being born in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Oscar-winning actor George Clooney and international human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, who gave birth to twins last month. “Thousands of young Syrian refugees are at risk - the risk of never being a productive part of society,” the couple said in

a statement. “Formal education can help change that.” A $3.25 million donation from the Clooney Foundation for Justice, Google and HP will pay for transportation, school supplies, computers, content, curriculum and teacher training. A spokesman for the Clooneys’ foundation, Max Gleischman, said the organization had decided to support education for Syrian refugees through the public school system, instead of investing in private schools operated by SABIS, an international company which has prepared students for college and high school exams. Myanmar H1N1 swine flu death toll rises to 10

YANGON - Four more people have died in an outbreak of H1N1 influenza in Myanmar, a health official said on Monday, taking the death toll in the latest outbreak to 10 as the government stepped up public awareness campaigns about the swine flu virus. The latest H1N1 outbreak began more than a week ago, said Thinzar Aung, deputy director of the infectious diseases department at the Ministry of Health and Sport, with Yangon, Myanmar ’s biggest city, the worst affected area. Authorities have carried out health awareness campaigns and sought to calm public fears over the outbreak, although stores have sold out of surgical masks in Yangon. Authorities have told the public not to panic and described the latest outbreak as a regular seasonal occurrence. “We have never withheld any

information about the infection of the disease,” heath minister Myint Htwe was quoted as saying by state-run newspaper Global New Light of Myanmar on Monday. “We are releasing real information on the seasonal influenza H1N1 in real time,” he said. H1N1 has been among the strains of flu circulating in Myanmar seasonally since a global pandemic in 2009, although deaths from the virus had not been reported in recent years, heath officials have said. Aside from those killed by the virus, 51 people have been

confirmed to have contracted the disease, according to the health ministry. It has called on hospitals and clinics to report patients showing signs of influenza-like illness. Separately, Myanmar’s livestock ministry has also reported an outbreak of H5N1 bird flu in the south. More than 1,800 chickens were culled after the virus was detected at a farm in the southern town of Dawei last month. China China’s Inner Mongolia region has culled 66,500 chickens following an outbreak of bird flu

that has affected 35,000 birds, the Ministry of Agriculture said on Tuesday. The H5N1 strain of the virus was confirmed at a hen farm in Tongliao city, which has 3 million people, and has killed 15,000 birds, the ministry said in a statement on its website. The outbreak is now under control, the ministry said. The last bird flu outbreak in March killed 134 birds at a duck farm in central Hubei province. The most recent case is the first confirmed major bird flu outbreak among poultry after winter months and brings the total culled since October to more than 240,000 birds. Additionally, the H7N9 strain of the virus has caused at least 281 deaths since October in

China. Live poultry markets were shut down in many provinces following human infections, forcing egg producers to keep their hens beyond their prime time, as demand also plunged amid public fears over bird flu. Russian man sentenced to 17 years for attempting to smuggle hashish

MANGUPURA - Kuta Customary Village will be collecting data about migrants and foreigners who rent houses or rooms in boarding houses using a card system. This card data will be inputted into database of the Kuta customary village Management Information System (Simdaku) of krama tamiu or guest residents.

As stated by chief of Kuta customary village, I Wayan Swarsa, when contacted on Monday (Jul. 31), the existence of foreigners contracting residences in Kuta is not a new thing however as of yet there has been system for collecting such data. According to Swarsa the reason this has been such a difficult task is because communication between parties related to the supervision of guest residents has been quite poor. “I am not talking about hotels, villas and other such accommodations. The right to govern these lies with the government. The Customary Village does not have such a capacity” he said. He clarified that many foreigners stay in rented houses or boarding houses owned by customary villagers and non-customary villagers to whom foreigners pay a monthly or yearly rent. He added that the Customary Village does not have any authority to regulate them but Swarsa feels a moral obligation to be responsible for these cases. IN order to meet this moral responsibility, the Customary Village is creating the Simdaku of guest residents.

In this system, two aspects will be dealt with. Firstly, they will compile data about who and how many customary and administrative residents own boarding houses and rented houses. Each owner will be given a Simdaku card containing a chip on which data regarding the owner of the house and the renting of this house will be stored. “These cards will show the name of resident, their rented house, the location, number of rooms provided and the identity of the guests who are renting the house” he said. Secondly, every resident or guest resident who is renting a house or room in Kuta annually annually will be given a guest resident number. “This guest resident card indicates that everyone boarding or contracting a house annually will have a guest resident card instead of seasonal resident identity card (kipem). This card will clearly record the data of the renter’s identity, their address and the name of the house owner. This system will be connected to Simdaku card owned by the house owner”, he concluded. All these cards will then be accessible by GPS. “We started preparing this system four months ago. It will be effective in the case where a house owner needs to report anything about their occupants. We have set up a special management team for the Simdaku card system. The owners of contracted house will be obliged to report any increment, deduction or mutation of the renting residents”, he added. (kmb23)

DENPASAR - After having been proven guilty of possessing and smuggling 2.9 kg of hashish, a 29-year old Russian man, defendant Roman Kalashnikov, was convicted and sentenced to 17 years in prison. On Monday (Jul. 31), in a trial at the Denpasar District Court, the panel of judges led by Partha Bargawa declared the Russian man to be under Article 113 paragraph 2 of Law No.35/2009 on narcotics. The defendant, who works as a chef, was also sentenced to pay a fine of IDR 2 billion with a 4-month subsidiary confinement. This sentence is lighter than the sentence demanded by the public prosecutor Made Tangkas. Previ-

ously, the prosecutor from the Bali prosecutor’s office demanded the defendant Roman with 20 years of imprisonment with a fine of IDR 2 billion and a 6-month subsidiary confinement. In response to this decision, the defendant accompanied by his legal counsel stated that they wanted to think about it first. A similar response was also presented by the public prosecutor. Roman was arrested by officers of Customs and Excises at Ngurah Rai Airport because he was caught carrying nearly 3 kg of hashish when entering Bali area on December 14, 2016. The hashish was put into 25 packages of Danti brand toothpaste that were stored in his suitcase. (kmb37)

TABANAN - Cultural Camp, a cultural event for students in the district of Tabanan district was held again this year and was officially opened on Sunday night (Jul. 30). A total of 50 high school and vocational school students from across Tabanan participated in the creative camp in the area of Srijong Temple, Selemadeg. Assistant I Wayan Miarsana representing the regent of Tabanan expressed his appreciation for the Cultural Camp that entered its seventh year. “Take positive benefits from this activity. Participants will be educated to be disciplined, creative and innovative. Take advantage of this five-day opportunity to get mental training,” he explained. The initiator of the activity who is also Chairman of the Tabanan House of Representatives, I Ketut Suryadi, revealed that this year’s Cultural Camp features the theme One Earth, One Soul and as in previous years all the activities are aimed at sharpening creativity. “Be disciplined and follow all the guidance given by the mentors, alumni of the Cultural Camp, and builder from Anak Angin”, said Suryadi. He added that every year those who attend the camp go on to achieve great things in different

fields and added that he is confident that the same will be true of this year’s participants. “We try to collaborate with artists in literature, music, dance and other arts, so as soon as the participants leave the camp they are better able to create original works”, he said. He also emphasized that the students who attend the Culture Camp are not being formed into artists but rather encouraging creativity as a general life skill. “Whatever your profession creativity is helpful, especially if you are an artist of course”, he concluded. This year one of the mentors Sawung Jabo will be attended as he does every year Baroque Circus. Ayu Veda, artist Sujana Kenyem and playwright Putu Satria will also be mentors to the students this year. In his opening speech Sawung Jabo greeted the participants with a question about the preparation for the five-day camp, he asked that all the participants try to develop their hidden potential. “For five days, we will cultivate our creativity and potential. London’s ‘smart street’ turns footsteps into energy

LONDON - You might think that tasking a stretch of sidewalk with generating electricity would be enough of a feat, but this kinetic pavement on London’s Bird Street is apparently supposed to save retail, too. The 107-square-foot section of Pavegen pavers harvests energy from the steps of passersby—using essentially the same technique as those experimental vibrationharvesting roads. But with Pavegen installations already deployed in a handful of spots like Washington D.C. and Rio de Janeiro, the company decided that this Bird Street sidewalk has to do more than just power the street lamps. So they’ve added an app that not only lets you see how much power your brief stroll has generated, it also gives you discounts at the

stores you’ve just walked past. And they’ve deemed it “the world’s first ‘Smart Street’”—because what could be smarter than the idea that someone will take the time to find out what the funny-looking sidewalk is all about, then download an app to see how much power they’ve made, and then be so won over by a store voucher that they’ll detour into a retail space? As Pavegen CEO Laurence Kemball-Cook puts it in a statement, “...being able to demonstrate how our technology can bring to life the retail shopping experience is a vital step for us. Google, Facebook show power of ad duopoly as rivals stumble

SAN FRANCISCO - Quarterly results from Alphabet Inc and Facebook Inc provided fresh evidence this week that the digital advertising market is effectively a duopoly, a dynamic with deep implications for two of Silicon Valley’s titans. Alphabet, the owner of Google and YouTube, and Facebook, the world’s largest social network, each produced billions in profits during the most recent quarter and enjoyed steep revenue increases, while smaller rivals such as Snap Inc and Twitter Inc struggle to maintain growth and reduce losses. This year, the Big Two in internet advertising are expected to take half of all revenue worldwide, and more than 60 percent in the United States, according to research firm eMarketer. In the U.S. market, no other digital ad platform has market share above 5 percent. Google suffered a minor blip in earnings due to higher payments to mobile carriers and others for search traffic. But efforts by Verizon and other network operators to compete for mobile ad dollars have had little impact thus far. Independent advertising technology companies such as Rubicon Project and Rocket Fuel have also found it tough to compete. Advertisers are flocking to Facebook and Google because they reach billions of people and have a wealth of data that can be deployed for targeted marketing. Their growing dominance, however, raises questions about how they will use their billions in profits to maintain growth when the advertising market as a whole is expanding only modestly. “Digital advertising will soon be approaching a point of saturation, indicating that there are limits to growth which may not be fully accounted for by the investment community,” Brian Wieser, senior analyst at Pivotal Research, said in a client note this week. The advent of a duopoly is also spurring concerns about monopolistic practices. Google this month set aside $2.7 billion to pay a record European Union antitrust fine for favoring its shopping service in search results, and it faces two additional investigations in Europe. Facebook declined to comment on Friday. In the past, the company has rejected the idea that it is part of a duopoly, saying that it competes against more than just digital platforms and has less than 5 percent of the overall advertising market. Management of Goa Lawah Temple judges it inappropriate

SEMARAPURA — Following the incident of tourists sitting on the shrine at one of the temples in Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida, some members of the Bali House of Representatives, raised the idea of creating a regional bylaw that would prohibit foreign tourists from entering temples. The idea was even discussed with the Bali chapter of the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI).

DENPASAR — The plan to launch school bus by the Denpasar municipality in the academic year 2017 has not been realized. The transportation agency handling this program is still waiting for the procurement or purchase of the vehicles. “We are still waiting for procurement of the vehicles,” said the Head of Land Transportation, the Denpasar Transportation Agency, Dewa Ketut Adi Pradnyana, on Sunday (Jul. 30). Adi Pradnyana said that preparations in the region have been completed, ranging from dissemination to schools to determination of the routes. “We are currently waiting for the purchase of vehicles or publishing e-catalogs. Based on information, several bus manufacturing companies have been published. Hopefully, the type of fleet can be determined this week,” said Adi Pradnyana, accompanied by Administrative staff of the Land Transportation, I Putu Budi Ari Wibawa. When asked about the launch of the school bus, Adi Pradnyana has not dared to give certainty. Everything depends on the process carried out in central government. “We cannot make sure when it can be launched. Now, we are just waiting for procurement of the vehicles, while the preparations here have been completed,” he said.

As is known, the free school transport service designed by the municipal government of Denpasar received positive responses from community, especially parents. Evidently, from the results of dissemination targeting 20 public and private junior high schools, hundreds of students showed their interests by making registration. Moreover, the registration already exceeded the specified quota. At the initial phase, the school transport service will operate six microbuses for the route of North Denpasar and East Denpasar. Each bus has a capacity of 25 seats, so for the morning route can only serve 150 students. However, to make the service more effective, it will still be open for daytime service. This free bus program is mainly intended to provide students with safety assurance and reduce the use of private vehicles to schools. The school bus is equipped with various facilities, such as air conditioning, Wi-Fi and some applications. North and East Denpasar are selected as the routes because both subdistricts have not been served by public transportation. Actually, according to Law No. 22/2009, on traffic and road transportation, the local government guarantees the availability of transportation for the community. (kmb12)

The idea received a cold response from chief of Klungkung’s Goa Lawah Temple management, Putu Juliadi. Such a regional bylaw he said would negatively impact on tourism and should therefore be studied comprehensively before being instituted. So far Goa Lawah temple that is located at Pesinggahan village, Dawan, still functions as a tourist destination, especially for foreign tourists. The innermost temple courtyard (uttama mandala) temple is located in a fruit bat cave. If a bylaw prohibiting foreign tourists from entering temples were to be instituted, tourism which has been having a positive impact on local villagers would surely dim as would the benefits that it brings. Tourists come to see unique things that cannot be found elsewhere, so there would be less tourists if they cannot witness this rare sight. “I do not know what to say, but the Goa Lawah (fruit bat cave) attracts tourists who come to see the fruit bats, that happen to be found in the innermost temple courtyard. the temple then tourists would also stay outside the temple”, said Juliadi on Sunday (July 30). According to Juliadi in order to prevent an unfortunate incident like the one that occurred in Nusa Lembongan, tourists simply need to made aware of the rules regarding temple conduct and procedures for entering temples. Also there needs to be more supervision of visitors to temples. “ The most important thing is that we as the management should monitor the activities of all the guests to ensure that they are abiding by the rules” he said. ATV Kuber Bali has now complete permits

GIANYAR — All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Kuber Bali Adventure at Bayad hamlet, Melinggih, Payangan, is ascertained to have been completely licensed. This ATV tourist attraction is already licensed. However, we still come down as the authorities to keep the demands of society. When checking in the field, it is proved there is nothing, unlike the publication,” he said accompanied by regional bylaws enforcement division head and a number of section heads and related staff. Cok Agusnawa also requested that no other parties will questioned about the existence of this tourist attraction. He promised to back up the attraction entirely. “I will completely back up this ATV,” he said, applauded by dozens of the present customary villagers. In the meantime, Operations Manager of the ATV, Jro Kubayan, explained the ATV tourist attraction was built on the agreement of local customary villagers. It is only an irrigation tunnel that is not used anymore,” he said. Tearful former Thai PM Yingluck says she was never dishonest

BANGKOK - Thailand’s former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra delivered a tearful closing statement to a Bangkok court on Tuesday, saying she did not act dishonestly in a multibillion dollar rice subsidy scheme and that she was being politically persecuted. Yingluck argued the rice scheme, which backfired costing Thailand $8 billion, benefited average Thais. The scheme appealed to agricultural voters, who make up nearly 40 percent of the labour force, and are the backbone of Yingluck’s party. “The rice policy has been proven to benefit the economy at the grass roots level and nationwide. It did not cause losses. Which is why I intended to make this rice scheme work,” Yingluck told the court. “The rice scheme was honest and correct,” she added. If convicted of negligence, Yingluck faces 10 years in jail. Yingluck was ousted in a May 2014 coup and banned from politics for five years in 2015 but remains a figurehead of the populist movement that has won every Thai election since 2001. The case against her is the latest twist in a chapter of political infighting that has pitted Yingluck

and her brother, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, against members of the Bangkok-based, military-backed establishment. Why is helping farmers wrong?” In 2011 Yingluck sailed to victory in a general election and introduced a scheme to buy rice above market prices from farmers, her core constituents, store it and resell it later at a higher price. But the scheme backfired and caused Thailand to lose its crown as the world’s largest exporter of the grain. Wayang Wong sacred dance that only exists at Tejakula village, Tejakula subdistrict, was presented at Maksan Temple of local village on Thursday (Apr. 6). The location is chosen because the masks of wayang wong characters are kept at local temple. They are even believed to have been four centuries old. The players performing the Ramayana storyline start staging the first episode of the Bala Kanda in the Ramayana epic. In this staging, the storyline presented by the players is entitled “Sander Sita.” It tells about the duke Marica disguising as a golden deer to attract the attention of Sita. When seeing the deer, Sita then asked Rama to chase it. Rama went away from Sita and tried to shoot the disguising deer. Marica cleverly cried out for help, and his voice was similar to Rama’s. Again, Sita asked Laksmana to look for Rama as being told to be facing difficulties. When Laksmana followed Rama, Sita was abducted by Ravana. By and large, when featuring the storyline of kanda (book—Ed) starting from the first through the seventh, it

Based on the existing references, wayang wong is known as sacred art. This art first appeared at Tejakula village about four centuries ago. From the location of its emergence at Tejakula, this art then spread to several regions in Bali. Although having been widespread, its taksu (divine vibration) never disappears and is kept sacred until now. Wayang wong even becomes one of the nine dances included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Defiant Venezuela president mocks Trump after U.S. sanctions

CARACAS - A defiant Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro mocked the sanctions Washington slapped on him Monday after Sunday’s election of a new legislative superbody that prompted the White House to call him a dictator for “seizing absolute power.”

Oil-rich but economically ailing Venezuela awaited a fresh wave of protests against the unpopular Maduro, whose loyalist Supreme Court had already stripped the opposition-controlled congress of its powers, while the country waited to see what actions the newly-minted constituent assembly will take. At least 10 people were killed in unrest during Sunday’s vote, bringing the death toll from four months of anti-government protests to more than 120. Governments from Spain to Canada to Argentina and Peru joined Washington in denouncing the election, which was boycotted by the opposition and widely seen as an affront to democracy. Maduro, hit earlier on Monday by sanctions aimed directly at him, chided U.S. President Donald Trump for winning the presidency by way of the electoral college after losing the popular vote in the November election. “I don’t take orders from the empire,” he shouted to a televised gathering of supporters. “Keep up your sanctions, Donald Trump!” “In the United States it’s possible to become president with 3 million votes less than your opponent. What a tremendous democracy!” Maduro told a cheering and applauding audience.

Democrat Hillary Clinton outpaced Trump by almost 2.9 million votes, according to official U.S. election results. Maduro said the sanctions reflected Trump’s “desperation” and “hatred” for Venezuela’s socialist government. Qatar launches wideranging WTO complaint against trade boycott

GENEVA - Qatar filed a wideranging legal complaint at the World Trade Organization on Monday to challenge a trade boycott by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and United Arab Emirates, the director of Qatar’s WTO office Ali Alwaleed al-Thani told Reuters. By formally “requesting consultations” with the three countries, the first step in a trade dispute, Qatar triggered a 60 day deadline for them to settle the complaint or face litigation at the WTO and potential retaliatory trade sanctions. “We’ve given sufficient time to hear the legal explanations on how these measures are in compliance with their commitments, to no satisfactory result,” al-Thani said. “We have always called for dialogue, for negotiations, and this is part of our strategy to talk to the members concerned and to gain more information on these measures, the legality of these measures, and to find a solution to resolve the dispute.” The boycotting states cut ties with Qatar - a major global gas supplier and host to the biggest U.S. military base in the Middle East - on June 5, accusing it of financing militant groups in Syria, and allying with Iran, their regional foe, allegations Doha denies. The boycotting countries have previously told the WTO that they would cite national security to justify their actions against Qatar, using a controversial and almost unprecedented exemption allowed under the WTO rules. They said on Sunday they were ready for talks to tackle the dispute, the worst rift between Gulf Arab states in years, if Doha showed willingness to deal with their demands. The text of Qatar’s WTO complaint cites “coercive attempts at economic isolation” and spells out how they are impeding Qatar’s rights in the trade in goods, trade in services and intellectual property.

The complaints against Saudi Arabia and the UAE run to eight pages each, while the document on Bahrain is six pages. There was no immediate reaction from the three to Qatar’s complaint, which is likely to be circulated at the WTO later this week.

“REMAIN HOPEFUL”

The disputed trade restrictions include bans on trade through Qatar’s ports and travel by Qatari citizens, blockages of Qatari digital services and websites, closure of maritime borders and prohibition of flights operated by Qatari aircraft. The complaint does not put a value on the trade boycott, and al-Thani declined to estimate how much Qatar could seek in sanctions if the litigation ever reached that stage, which can take 2-5 years or longer in the WTO system. “We remain hopeful that the consultations could bear fruit in resolving this,” he said. The WTO suit does not include Egypt, the fourth country involved in the boycott. Although it has also cut travel and diplomatic ties with Qatar, Egypt did not expel Qatari citizens or ask Egyptians to leave Qatar. Al-Thani declined to explain why Egypt was not included. “Obviously all options are available. But we have not raised a consultation request with Egypt yet,” he said. In its WTO case, Qatar would also draw attention to the impact the boycott was having on other WTO members, he added. Many trade diplomats say that using national security as a defence risks weakening the WTO by removing a taboo that could enable countries to escape international trade obligations. Al-Thani said governments had wide discretion to invoke the national security defence but it had to be subject to oversight. (rtr)

President Jokowi orders immediate settlement of acid attack case

YOGYAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Tuesday ordered an immediate settlement of the case related to an acid attack on the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigator Novel Baswedan in April this year. “I order an immediate settlement (of the case),” he said after launching a Measles-Rubella Immunization Campaign at the state Islamic junior high school (MTsN) 10 in Sleman District, Yogyakarta Province. Earlier, President Jokowi had summoned National Police Chief General Tito Karnavian to discuss follow-up action to handle the case. Speaking in connection with what was discussed at the meeting, the president noted that the national police chief had made the outcome of the meeting public. At the meet-

ing, the president urged the police to settle the case soon, Karnavian stated. He remarked that the police had taken several steps to solve the case. Two men had reportedly attacked Baswedan as he was walking home after attending the dawn prayer at a nearby mosque at 5:10 a.m. local time at the Kelapa Gading housing complex in North Jakarta in April. The attack resulted in injuries to his face and left eye, while the attackers were still at large. Baswedan, who is currently handling high-profile corruption cases, has been frequently terrorized and attacked. In 2016, he was hit by a car while driving a motorcycle on his way to the KPK building. DEPOK - The University of Indonesia (UI) has once again achieved the first rank as the best university in Indonesia, according to Webometrics Ranking of World Universities 2017. UI Rector Professor Muhammad Anis, in a written statement received by ANTARA here on Monday, stated that the UI is intensifying teaching, learning, and research supported by Information Communication Technology (ICT). “One of them is website development for downloading journals and improving national and international scientific publications from UI civitas academia to provide access to knowledge transfer, education, and improving teaching quality,” he noted. According to Webometrics 2017 version, in addition to UI, some Indonesian universities which are included in the top five in the country are Gadjah Mada University (ranked second in Indonesia and 1,004 in the world), Bandung Institute of Technology (ranked third at national and 1,209 in the world), Bogor Institute of Agriculture (fourth at national and 1.342 at global level), and Brawijaya University (ranked fifth at national and 1,870 at global level). Webometrics also released that the UI ranked is at the 14th in

Southeast Asia and ranked 955th in the world. UI is considered the best in terms of open access to scientific publications that can be reached by the world community through the Internet network. Webometrics is a website-based university ranking system worldwide. Webometrics believes that web presence and visibility can be used as a global performance indicator of a university. The indicator considers universitys teaching commitments, research results, international prestige, and community relations, including with industrial and economic sectors and between universities. Indonesia had blocked 11 of Telegram’s Domain Name Systems(DNS) for its web-based service on July 14 and these would be reopened this week, the ministry said in a statement. Many messaging apps, such as Whatsapp and Telegram, offer end-to-end encryption from sender to recipient, which blocks even the companies providing the platform from seeing messages. Security officials in some countries have complained that such apps provide a safe space for militants to communicate with each other. LONDON - A new era in English soccer begins on Friday with a crackdown on players who cheat referees by diving to win a penalty or get an opponent sent off. The second-tier Championship games between Sunderland and Derby County and between Nottingham Forest and Millwall will be the first in which players can be retrospectively punished with two-match bans if they are found guilty in a trial by video. Diving for penalties has been a growing problem in the English game. Most clubs in the top two divisions were accused of it at some point last season, with Marcus Rashford of Manchester United, Leroy Sane of Manchester City and Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur coming under the spotlight on a single weekend. The crackdown, announced in May, is aimed at players who go unpunished during the match for actions that have a significant bearing on it. The Football Association will be able to charge them with “successful deception of a match official”. Its implementation follows a year of feedback from players and officials and it is adapted from a similar regulation in force in Scotland. If not, the case will go before an FA independent regulatory commission that deals with all disciplinary issues. Spain’s La Liga does not allow standing and fans seem content simply to ignore the rules -- something which standing’s supporters say happens elsewhere. “One of the problems we have at the moment is that people stand up in seating areas anyway and then the people behind them are also forced to stand,” said Peter Daykin from England’s Football Supporters’ Federation (FSF). “It’s preferable to have designated standing areas rather than having areas where some people stand and others don’t.
