Films from Jolie, Clooney, Aronofsky among TIFF premieres
LOS ANGELES — George Clooney’s crime comedy “Suburbicon,” Angelina Jolie’s Khmer Rouge drama “First They Killed My Father,” and Darren Aronofsky’s horror feature “mother!” starring Jennifer Lawrence are among the films that will be playing at the Toronto International Film Festival this year. Festival programmers Piers Handling and Cameron Bailey unveiled the initial 47 film lineup Tuesday. The Toronto festival, along with Venice and Telluride, is considered one of the launching pads for Hollywood’s awards season and a best-of display of films from other festivals. Some of the buzzier films set to play include Joe Wright’s Winston Churchill biopic “The Darkest Hour,” starring Gary Oldman; Guillermo del Toro’s Cold War-set fairy tale “The Shape of Water”; Martin McDonagh’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and Alexander Payne’s satire “Downsizing,” starring Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig, which will have previously opened the Venice Film Festival. A few actors will be showing off their directorial debuts, including Andy Serkis with the biographical drama “Breathe,” starring Andrew Garfield as the polio-stricken disability advocate Robin Cavendish and Greta Gerwig with “Lady Bird,” where Saoirse Ronan plays a Sacramento teenager looking to escape her small town. TIFF will also feature a number of sports biopics including “The Battle of the Sexes,” with Emma Stone as Billie Jean King and Steve Carell as Bobby Riggs, and “I, Tonya” with Margot Robbie as Tonya Harding and Sebastian Stan as Jeff Gillooly. Paul Rudd can also be seen as Major League Baseball player turned WWII operative Moe Berg in Ben Lewin’s adaptation of “The Catcher Was a Spy.” “Mustang” director Deniz Gamze Erguven will debut her L.A. riots film “Kings,” with Halle Berry and Daniel Craig. French fire forces evacuation of 10,000 people
RIVIERA - At least 10,000 people have been forced to flee campsites and homes after a new fire broke out along the French Riviera. Wildfires have already consumed swathes of forest in tourist-packed southeastern France in recent days, as well as on the island of Corsica. The new blaze, in the middle of the holiday season, is raging near Bormes-les-Mimosas, southwest of the popular resort Saint-Tropez on the Mediterranean coast. The fire broke out just before 11pm on Tuesday and burned 800 hectares of forest by Wednesday morning, with 540 firefighters sent to tackle the blaze. Around 3,000 campers were among those evacuated from La Londe, La Lavandou and Bormeles-Mimosas. A fire service official said: “The evacuations, at least 10,000, followed the progression of the fire. It’s an area that doubles or triples its population in summer.”Among those evacuated were British holidaymakers at the Camp du Domaine campsite in Bormes-les-Mimosas. All 1,000 camping plots across the site were evacuated, according to Oliver Williams, deputy head teacher at St John’s Primary School in Redhill, Surrey, who is staying at
the resort with his family. He told Sky News: “My wife woke me up about two o’clock this morning, saying she’d heard the car alarms and people shouting ‘allez, allez’. “They were chucking everything in the back of a car and trying to get out. That was all a bit surreal and it took a moment to really sink in. “My wife had mentioned the fact there was a glow over the back of the campsite hill and there was a fire.” Mr Williams’ family headed to the campsite’s private beach, where many of the 3,000 evacuated, including French, German and Dutch tourists, had gathered. “We stayed from about 2am until about 7am and then we were thinking we could probably make our
way back to the plot,” he said. “But we were told we weren’t allowed to go back because the Canadairs were about to fly over and drop water on to the fire. “That’s mixed with some chemicals so they keep people well back.” He added: “We were all just watching to see what was going to happen with the fire - whether it was going to progress towards us or carry on going over the hill.” Mr Williams praised French firefighters for their “absolutely amazing job” in tackling the multiple blazes in the area.Fellow Briton Lisa Minot, The Sun’s travel editor, is also staying at the resort - where the campsite’s sprinkler system was being used in an attempt to stop the blaze jumping across from the hills.
She said: “Everybody was told to evacuate to the beach and they’re still there and they have not allowed us to go back to our caravan. “It’s utter chaos, there are no provisions or anything else... there’s no one telling us what to do.” But Ms Minot revealed the efforts are being “hampered by incredibly high winds”. Her mother Carol Bielfield said holidaymakers were trying to stay composed. “It was keep calm and carry on, make some tea, serve some biscuits and hope that you get some information,” she said. “But we’ve had no information at all. Everyone gave up, started leaving the beach and then the sirens went off and we were told to go back to the beach, but there’s not been any information.” Local tourist site Fort de Bregancon, the former official retreat of French presidents, has been shut due to the fire.More than 4,000 firefighters and troops have been deployed in total, along with 19
water bomber planes, since the fires broke out in France on Monday. Six more of the planes have been ordered by the French government while extra firefighters have been drafted in from the north of the country. At least 12 firefighters have been injured and 15 police officers affected by smoke inhalation The blazes have scorched 4,000 hectares (15 square miles) of land so far across France, including Corsica, leaving behind charred earth. After getting tired of wondering here and there, eventually they saw a cloud of smoke from the Batukaru forest. After being approached, the smoke came out from coconut shell. Ultimately the servants asked for further guidance. In short, the medicine looked for has been obtained. At the end, Cokorda Tabanan got his recovery.

Geographically, the Tamba Waras Temple is located on the south slope of Mount Batukaru, precisely at Sangketan, Penebel, Tabanan. The temple located on the same line as the Batukaru Temple sits on the altitude of about 725 meters above sea level. To get to this temple, pilgrims have to cover a distance of about 22 km from the town of Tabanan. In terms of the temple structure, the Tamba Waras Temple is also nicknamed as the warehouse of universal medicine. It is estimated to have been established in the twelfth century. Sperm count falling sharply in developed world, researchers say
LONDON - Sperm counts in men from America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand have dropped by more than 50 percent in less than 40 years, researchers said on Tuesday.
They also said the rate of decline is not slowing. Both findings -- in a meta-analysis bringing together various studies -- pointed to a potential decline in male health and fertility. “This study is an urgent wake-up call for researchers and health authorities around the world to investigate the causes of the sharp ongoing drop in sperm count,” said Hagai Levine, who co-led the work at the Hebrew University-Hadassah Braun School of Public Health and Community Medicine in Jerusalem. The analysis did not explore reasons for the decline, but researchers said falling sperm counts have previously been linked to various factors such as exposure to certain chemicals and pesticides, smoking, stress and obesity. This suggests measures of sperm quality may reflect the impact of modern living on male health and act as a “canary in the coal mine” signalling broader health risks, they said. Studies have reported declines in sperm count since the early 1990s, but many of those have been questioned because they did not account for potentially
major confounding factors such as age, sexual activity and the types of men involved. Working with a team of researchers in the United States, Brazil, Denmark, Israel and Spain, Levine screened and brought together the findings of 185 sperm count studies from 1973 to 2011 and then conducted a so-called meta-regression analysis. The results, published in the journal Human Reproduction Update, showed a 52.4 percent decline in sperm concentration and a 59.3 percent decline in total sperm count among North American, European, Australian and New Zealand men. The former measures the concentration of semen in a man’s ejaculation, while the latter is semen concentration multiplied by volume. In contrast, no significant decline was seen in South America, Asia and Africa. The researches noted, however, that far fewer studies have been conducted in these regions. Experts asked to comment on the work said it was a comprehensive and well-conducted analysis and did a good job of adjusting for confounders that could have skewed its findings. Daniel Brison, a specialist in embryology and stem cell biology at Britain’s Manchester University, said the findings had “major implications not just for fertility but for male health and wider public health”. Doctors view technology as largely problematic SAN FRANCISCO - When an endurance runner with a history of heart failure felt under the weather, he brought his activity tracker data from a workout to his cardiologist. Dr. Michael Blum examined the runner’s heart rate readings. The cardiologist could see when his patient was pushing to climb a hill or to increase his speed, and when he was slowing down. “I could tell how hard he was working,” said Blum, a professor at the University of California, San Francisco. “I had this amazing data.” Ultimately, though, he had to inform his worried patient: “This is all really interesting, but I can’t tell you what it means.” Blum joined three other doctors who spoke last week on the promise – and the reality – of technology in a San Francisco panel discussion sponsored by Medscape and titled “Technology, Patients and the Art of Medicine.” Technology in the form of diagnostic software helped one of the panelists, Dr. Abraham Verghese, conclude that a patient was suffering from neurosarcoidosis – a diagnosis the Stanford University professor didn’t initially consider but one a software program immediately recognized given the patient’s symptoms. Technology offers doctors a view inside patients’ hearts, brains and bowels. And technology may speed the diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy, the leading cause of blindness, said panelist Dr. Jessica Mega, who leads the healthcare team at Verily, formerly Google Life. Nonetheless, 69 percent of the 100 doctors in the audience said increased reliance on technology and electronic health records only served to separate them from their patients. As evidence of the problem, the panelists cited apps that claim to do things they don’t really do, like accurately measure blood pressure. But the biggest problem stem-
ming from technology for the doctors, and the bane of many doctors’ existence, is the electronic health record, also known as an EHR. The U.S. government has touted electronic records, initially designed for billing, as a way to dramatically improve patient care and has used financial incentives to speed their adoption. The hope was that the widespread use of EHRs would reduce medical errors, inefficiencies and inappropriate care. The effort has failed, according to Dr. Eric Topol, editor-in-chief of Medscape and the panel moderator. American doctors continue to make 12 million diagnosis errors a year; one in four patients in U.S. hospitals continue to be harmed; and healthcare costs continue to soar, he said. Topol called electronic health records “a complete mess.” “Why do we just put up with pathetic technology?” he asked. The panelists, as well as the doctors in attendance, bemoaned the time it took them to complete electronic records, time they longed to spend with patients. Verghese credited electronic records with billing well, with reducing medical errors and with keeping him out of dusty basements in search of patient files. At the same time, he blamed EHRs for tying doctors to their computers and at least partially for his colleagues’ unprecedented suicide rates, depression, burnout and disillusionment. “I find it pretty incredible,” he said, that with “all the wonderful, sophisticated imaging technology, we still have this dinosaur of an electronic medical record.” Verghese, a best-selling author, is vice chair for the theory and practice of medicine at Stanford University and has championed the return of what he considers the lost art of the physical exam. He questioned how physicians allowed EHRs to take over medical practices without physician input on how to make them work. (rtr)

From the raid was known if the hotel indeed has not owned an operating permit. “They use the old building permit (IMB) in 2016 and there are no structural changes. It only makes a design change having been submitted to local government but the permit has not been issued yet. It is constrained by the environmental management effort and environmental monitoring effort (UKL-UPL) related to spatial planning as it is now near coastline where it was previously far. When encountering any constraint, it should be submitted so that all requirements can be fulfilled because this has something to do with the SOP of the permit issuance, so it will not be criticized. We will discuss it later in the meeting,” said Susrama accompanied by some members such as Putu Kamawijaya, Nyoman Renteb and others. In the future, added Putu Kamawijaya, it needs to establish a
special committee. Thus, the study can be juxtaposed with regulation. According to him, it is necessary for surveillance as well as data collection. Jembrana indeed needs investors but must be supervised due to related to permits and regionally generated revenue (PAD). “Jembrana needs investors, but they still should be directed so as not to be having no license,” he explained. Service providers should be in accordance with the SOP. If the requirements have been complete, issue the permit immediately. Otherwise, please be informed what the constraints are. New investors also have to calculate for their investment. “If they are made difficult and operating without permit, obviously they are harming us as well,” said Susrama. Without permit, it will also become more complicated, especially if there is a problem. If the special committee for permit handling is formed, it is getting steadier. KINTAMANI - The iconic citrus product of “Jeruk Kintamani” or “Kintamani Oranges” is experiencing a bumper crop in Bali reducing prices to only Rp. 3,500 – 4,000 a kilogram. Farmers in Bali orange orchards complain that prices have plummeted at the same time when costs of bringing an orange crop to market have risen. Mangku Garis, an orange farmer in Manikliu Village, said prices for Kintamani oranges dropped suddenly a month ago. Farmers are blaming over production and reduced consumer buying power for the price decrease. While last year saw prices improved in July, that has not been the case this year. In 2018, Air New Zealand plans to fly five times a week between Auckland and Denpasar using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners with an exmpanded season beginning in April. During peak periods this translates into more than 1,500 seats per week each way between Bali and Auckland. U.S. House approves new Russia sanctions, defying Trump
WASHINGTON - The U.S. House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to slap new sanctions on Russia and force President Donald Trump to obtain lawmakers’ permission before easing any sanctions on Moscow, in a rare rebuke of the Republican president. It was unclear how quickly the bill would make its way to the White House for Trump to sign into law or veto. The bill still must be passed by the Senate, which is mired in debate over efforts to overhaul the U.S. healthcare system as lawmakers try to clear the decks to leave Washington for their summer recess. The sanctions bill comes as lawmakers investigate possible meddling by Russia in the 2016 presidential election and potential collusion by Republican Trump’s campaign. Moscow has denied it worked to influence the election in Trump’s favor, and he has denied his campaign colluded. The White House said the president had not yet decided whether he would sign the measure. Rejecting the bill - which would potentially hamper his hopes of pursuing improved relations with Moscow - would carry a risk that his veto could be overridden by lawmakers.
“While the president supports tough sanctions on North Korea, Iran and Russia, the White House is reviewing the House legislation and awaits a final legislative package for the president’s desk,” said spokeswoman Sarah Sanders. House members backed the bill, which also imposes sanctions on Iran and North Korea, by a nearunanimous margin of 419-3, with strong support from Trump’s fellow Republicans as well as Democrats, despite objections from Trump, who wanted more control over the ability to impose sanctions. The Republican-controlled Senate passed an earlier version of the bill with near-unanimous support. The House added the North Korea measures after becoming frustrated with the Senate’s failure to advance a bill it passed in May. Representative Ed Royce, the Republican chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said the three countries “are threatening vital U.S. interests and destabilizing their neighbors. It is well past
time that we forcefully respond.” But the combined bill has run into objections from some senators, who are unhappy that the House added the North Korea sanctions after holding up the measure for more than a month. Senate leaders have not said when they might consider the House bill. Senator Bob Corker, the Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he was not sure the bill would “fly through” his chamber. “The only language we agreed to was Iran and Russia. So adding North Korea on, I just don’t know how we’re going to deal with it yet,” Corker told reporters. “The better route would have been to send over what had been agreed to.” The bill had raised concerns in the European Union, where U.S. allies depend on supplies of Russian gas. SEOUL - A half-hour’s drive north of Seoul, along a highway lined with barbed wire, lie two shopping malls the size of several football stadiums, a stone’s throw from the world’s most militarized border. The malls are in the city of Paju, gateway to the U.N. truce village of Panmunjom, where military officers from the combatants of the 1950-53 Korean war discuss armistice matters -- when the two sides are on speaking terms, which they aren’t these days. “Fairy tales come true in Paju”, is the advertising lure from the Korean Tourism Board. But it was nightmares that were all too true here during the Korean war, when Paju featured some of its fiercest battles. Paju is home to the country’s only “enemy’s cemetery”, where the remains of Chinese and North Korean soldiers are buried. That’s all but forgotten history now. On the rooftop of the Lotte Premium Outlet, children and their parents can view North Korea across the Imjin River through binoculars. The mall also features a merry-go-round, cinema, and a mini-train. At Shinsegae Paju Premium Outlet, about a dozen children jump and scream around a fountain inside the mall on a sizzling, July summer day. Just a couple miles away is a village modelled after France’s tourism centre of Provence, where restaurants, bakeries and clothing shops are decorated like a children’s playbook. Elsewhere in Paju, kids carved wood to make Pinocchio dolls at a museum, while adults tasted wine made of meoru, a Korean wild grape, at a farm. Paju, indeed, shows little signs of the tensions that have arisen since North Korea marked the U.S. July 4th holiday with a successful launch of what it said was an inter-
continental ballistic missile. The missile test prompted the United States and South Korea this month to conduct air force bomber exercises in the skies near here. LITTERING LAND MINES But at Paju’s Provence Village, Kim Ki-deok, a 41-year-old office worker from south of Seoul and father of a 4-year-old boy, said he doesn’t feel any more danger from being close to the border. “If North Korea really wants, they can shoot missiles far away,” said Kim. “I feel refreshed and would like to come here again.” The sense of insouciance can even be seen at the U.S. military’s Camp Bonifas on the outskirts of town, home to a three-hole golf course that Sports Illustrated once called the “world most dangerous golf course” because of the Korean War vintage land mines littering the area. The Korean War, in which the United States fought alongside South Korea and China with the North, ended in a truce that has yet to be replaced by a peace agreement and has left the two sides technically at war. It means South Koreans have long grown accustomed to living in a doomsday scenario, one that includes up to 10,000 artillery guns pointed toward the South and capable at any moment, in the words of North Korea’s propaganda machine, of turning Seoul into a “sea of fire” and a “pile of ashes.” For 30-year-old Park Cholmin, it’s nothing more than empty threats. “It’s just a show or performance. I think North Korea has a lot more to lose than to gain by turning Seoul into a sea of fire,” said the video game producer from Seoul, visiting the Shinsegae mall with his girlfriend to buy her a birthday gift. Britain’s opposition Labour alarms bankers with Robin Hood tax
LONDON - Britain’s left-wing opposition party has held a series of meetings with top finance executives, setting out how it would levy taxes on one of the world’s biggest financial trading centres if it snatched power from Prime Minister Theresa May. With May’s grip on the leadership weakened by an ill-judged election last month and her Conservative party divided over Brexit, Labour is hoping her minority government will collapse and catapult its socialist leader Jeremy Corbyn into power. Last week, Labour’s finance spokesman John McDonnell chose the London Stock Exchange -- a bastion of British capitalism -- to invite feedback on proposals, telling leaders his party will form the next government, sources at the meeting said. Banks in London’s financial hub had paid little attention to relations with the Labour Party since 2015 when members elected Corbyn, a veteran campaigner who is seen as opposing much of what the City of London stands for. But the industry has been forced to take the party seriously after its much stronger than expected showing in the general election which left May to rely on the support of a small Northern Irish party to prop up her government. McDonnell told executives from Standard Chartered, the London Stock Exchange, the City of London Corporation, lawyers, lobbyists and accountants in two separate meetings last week about Labour’s
proposals to expand an existing tax on shares to include trading on other assets such as bonds and derivatives. Labour says the tax -- proposed to be around half of a percentage point or less on the value of a trade -- could earn 4.7 billion pounds ($6.1 billion) a year. Labour published details of the tax in the run up to the June election. Banking industry figures are concerned such a tax, debated in Western economies for decades, could exacerbate the impact of Brexit by prompting more businesses to flee London. CUTTING DOWN TO SIZE Avinash Persaud, an economist and a former hedge fund manager, whose work is the inspiration for the proposal and appeared alongside McDonnell at one of the events, says Britain’s finance sector is lightly taxed. Persaud said the tax would help kill off high-frequency trading and he favours reducing the size of Britain’s financial sector
because it has become too large. “I do feel there is a right size for the financial sector and in some countries it is too small, but in Britain and America, in the Anglo-Saxon countries, I do think it is too large,” Persaud told Reuters in an interview. “This means it is absorbing a lot of resources and as a result it becomes a very powerful player, a very powerful player in politics and is maybe exerting a disproportionate impact.” Labour wants to use the higher taxes on financial services -- Britain’s most profitable industry -- to fund increased public spending and end seven years of austerity under the ruling Conservatives. The proposed levy would be based on a tax of 0.2 percent of the value of trades for banks, hedge funds and other financial companies, and 0.5 per cent for non-financial businesses. Britain has the largest foreign exchange market and the second largest derivatives market in the
world, accounting for just under 40 percent of the world’s dealings in those markets, according to the Bank for International Settlements.
DAMAGE FEARED One executive who attended one of the Labour meetings said the proposals would damage London at time when its status is under threat because of Brexit. “If they win power and actually go ahead with this, this would be the straw that breaks the camel’s back,” according to the executive. Richard Benson, the co-head of portfolio investment at currency managers Millennium Global, said such a proposal would likely send a lot of trading activity away from Britain. “It is the selective advantage that is the problem with this, unless everyone else does it, people just leave,” said Benson, who was not at the meetings. But the Labour Party’s City spokesman Jonathan Reynolds told Reuters although he has been sceptical in the past about a transaction tax it would help reduce anger towards banks for causing the financial crisis and raise revenue. Banks “need to continue to rebuild public trust and support, and the tax contribution from the sector is a
significant part of that,” he said. The head of one large investment bank in London said they are seeking to secure meetings with Labour’s senior team as they are a potential ally in pushing for a softer Brexit and to find out more about their policies. “We need to have some sort of dialogue with Labour because it’s been zero,” the banker said. Some bankers predicted that if Labour were to be elected, it would adopt a more centrist approach like former French President Francois Hollande or Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. Another executive who attended one of the meetings with McDonnell said it was made clear that Labour was inviting reaction to the proposals. “They are actively encouraging feedback and wanting to meet people further to discuss feedback. I thought that was a very positive message,” he said. Others warned though that there has been little so far from the party’s rhetoric to indicate a major softening in tone. Kober with Hanuman Figure, Based on Story of Arjuna Pramada
Ritual paraphernalia like kober (flags) are used as symbols of greatness and have philosophical meaning related to the power of the gods. Thus, it is common to find such objects bineng used in the the Hindu rituals of the Balinese community – especially in temples. The scale of these ritual objects is pursuant to the scale of the ritual being held. The use of flag or kober with the figure of Hanuman is frequently identified as a symbol of strength. Hanuman is a character in the Ramayana epic, often told in the form of a puppet show in Bali. According to mythology, Hanuman is son of Lord Bayu known as Maruti, he is not worshipped as a god. As Prof. Dr. I Made Bandem explains, Hanuman appears in the story Arjuna Pramada or Arjuna Pradalba. When Rama and Laksmana were leading their troops to build a bridge to Lanka, Arjuna came with Krishna. At that time, Rama-Laksmana and Krishna-Arjuna shared physical resemblances. Because the scene in this part of the story was crowded with many people the two pairs got mixed up so that Arjuna was with Rama and made the mistkae of saying that he could constuct a brigde from India to Lanka that was more robust than the one that Rama had made with his monkey army. Arjuna was asked to prove his words and he drew his arrow from South India to Lanka in order to crete the bridge. Since Rama was still in doubt about the strength of the bridge, Hanuman in the form of a little monkey tried to walk across the bridge, but as
he walked, he grew in size. By the time he arrived to the middle of the bridge, the structure collapsed under his weight. “This story goes beyond the standard patterns of the story that tells of the meeting of the the Ramayana Story with the story of the Mahabharata. Although this story is classified as the creation of puppeteers, it is said to have been narrated in a palm-leaf manuscript”, explained Prof. Bandem. As the story goes, Arjuna then kept his oath to worship Hanuman for his success. However, Hanuman could not stand to be worshiped by Arjuna so he finally apologized for having dared to dabble with a deity (pramada). With this apology he also promised to help Arjuna when needed. Arjuna took the initiative to make a flag with the figure of Hanuman that also symbolizes Lord Vayu which was then installed on his chariot. From this story was born the tradition of putting up these kober flags at temple. There is also another version of this story , said Dr. I Gusti Made Ngurah, which begins with Arjuna accompanied by Krishna who was send by Yudhishthira to the former kingdom of Lanka to look for a refferences that could for a symbol when carrying out a ritual. On the way, Arjuna and Krishna encountered a little monkey on a bridge. Arjuna was arrogant and insulted the little monkey. The little monkey answered that he was actually Hanuman and challenged Arjuna to try to destroy the bridge. Arjuna failed to meet this challenge. Arjuna was tested several times by the monkey but always failed. Finally the little monkey revealed his identity as Hanuman son of Lord Vayu. Hanuman said that he would respect Arjuna because he is a human but that Arjuna should also respect Hanuman as he is son of Lord Vayu and in this way there would be mutual respect. “Finally, Hanuman requested that Arjuna to create a flag that depicting Hanuman. This flag was then taken everywhere. The flag with the image of Hanuman ths became a symbol of Arjuna honoring Hanuman”, said Prof. Bandem. (kmb)

At this ATM, visitors cannot only take pictures with the background of natural beauty of the Melangit River, but also in the swing and some other selfie facilities. Before becoming the target of travelers, the ATM was once made only by local youths to simply hang out together. The materials used to make the platform are only sober ones, namely wood and bamboo. However, after visitors took selfie and was uploaded to social media, the platform is getting more crowded with tourist visits. Operations Manager of the ATM, I Wayan Lendra, recently said the ATM has been famous since more than a year ago. Venezuela opposition to start two-day anti-Maduro shutdown
CARACAS - President Nicolas Maduro’s adversaries are to stage a two-day national strike from Wednesday in a final push to pressure him into abandoning a weekend election for a super-congress they say will institutionalize autocracy in Venezuela. SAN FRANCISCO - Silicon Valley baron Elon Musk insulted rival billionaire Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday, escalating a tech wizard war of words over whether robots will become smart enough to kill their human creators. “His understanding of the subject is limited,” Musk said in a tweet about the Facebook Inc founder whose algorithms and other technology revolutionized social media and won 2 billion monthly active users. Previously, Zuckerberg was asked about Musk’s views on the dangers of robots. In his response, Zuckerberg chided “naysayers” whose “doomsday scenarios” were “irresponsible.” Zuckerberg and Musk, who is chief executive of electric car maker Tesla Inc and rocket company SpaceX, have been waging a debate at a distance over the past few days on the dangers of artificial intelligence. The two sharply disagree on whether tougher government regulation is needed for the technology. Distribution chain of rice should be cut: KPPU Jakarta - The distribution chain of rice should be cut in an attempt to bring down the prices, an official said. “Long distribution chain should be shortened whether it is transferred to the producer or the final buyer,” The Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) chairman Syarkawi Rauf, said here on Tuesday. The lengthy distribution chain starts from upstream to downstream. The sequence can be described as follows: farmerscollectors-mills-wholesalersretailer-final consumer. The price difference in the middle of the distribution chain reaches Rp3.500. The average price for farmers is in the range of Rp7.000 and up to the final consumer is Rp10.500. JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) received World Bank President Jim Yong Kim and his delegation at the Merdeka Palace here on Wednesday.
The president was accompanied by Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, Coordinating Minister for Economy Darmin Nasution, and Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Pandjaitan to receive the World Yong Kim and his delegation at 11 a.m. Western Indonesian Standard Time (WIB). “I knew from Mulyani that you had planned a visit this week as part of a trip ahead of next years World Bank-IMF meeting in Bali,” Jokowi said while receiving Kim and the delegation. Jokowi also expressed his appreciation for the strong partnership between his government and the World Bank over the years. “The World Bank has helped us improve the structure and quality or fiscal expenditures. It has helped us in eradicating poverty, investing in human capital such as improving health and education, and addressing the impacts of climate change,” he remarked. Jokowi also expressed his gratitude to the World Bank for upgrading the Ease of Doing Business (EODB) index from 106 to 91. “I know you are here to say that this year, the World Bank will provide upgrades again,” said the president.
After the meeting with Jokowi, Yong Kim remarked in a press conference that the reason for his visit was because Indonesia and Jokowi have great ideals for the country and people. “Indonesia has a growth rate of more than 5 percent, which will make it the envy of the majority of countries in the world,” Kim remarked. He said that the World Banks partnership with Indonesia was very close because he had been working with Sri Mulyani for four years in the World Bank Group. Earlier at 9 a.m. WIB, Jokowi also received the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) President Shinichi Kitaoka and his delegation at the Merdeka Palace. Kitaoka remarked in a press conference that his visit to Indonesia was the first of its kind as the president of JICA. “I have visited this country five or six times in the past, and each time I came here, I was surprised to know the developments and rapid economic growth,” Kitaoka noted. The JICA president noted that his meeting with Jokowi was held to discuss various issues, including Mass Rapid Transport, Patimbang Port in Subang, and a high-speed train project along the northern lane of Java Island. In the meantime, Mulyani explained that JICA had also participated in solving clean water and sanitation issues. “Japan has rich expertise in water treatment technology, and they have some development experience in small island areas, as they are also archipelagic countries,” Mulyani noted. LOS ANGELES - The father of retired Australian tennis star Mark Philippoussis was arrested on Tuesday at his San Diego home on suspicion of sexually abusing two children who he has been coaching in the sport, police said. Nikolaos Philippoussis, 68, will be formally charged at an arraignmnent scheduled for Wednesday afternoon in San Diego County Superior Court, said Lieutenant Greg Rylaarsdam of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. He was being held at San Diego Central jail in lieu of $2.5 million bond in the meantime. HONG KONG - Qatar’s national football team will be permitted to play in the preliminary qualifying rounds of the 2022 World Cup despite being given an automatic berth in the finals as tournament hosts, the Asian Football Confederation has said. Under the current system, the 12 teams advancing to the final phase of Asian qualifying for 2022 also secure places at the finals of the Asian Cup the following year.
The AFC said the decision was made at a meeting of its competition committee on Tuesday and that, pending FIFA approval, Qatar would also be allowed to play in the final phase of 2022 qualifying should they advance. The AFC has also said it would continue to work with federations in the Gulf region to ensure broadcasts of Asian qualifying matches for next year’s World Cup in Russia, as well as Asian Champions League broadcasts, would not be interrupted by ongoing diplomatic issues. Qatari broadcaster BeIn Sports, a division of the Al Jazeera network, holds the exclusive broadcast rights for matches under the control of the AFC for the Middle East region, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. Those three countries, along with Egypt, severed
diplomatic and travel ties with Qatar in June, accusing it of supporting Islamist militants. Doha denies the claims. Lin Xiaohua, who chaired the discussion after Saoud Al Mohannadi, a Qatari, recused himself, said it was important the AFC defended its commercial rights. “This is an extremely complex situation but we are pleased to have received reassurances from SAFF and UAEFA that they have no objection to the AFC delivering the international television feed for the games in Saudi Arabia and the UAE,” said Lin. “The committee recognises that it is important that the AFC commercial rights be defended and we are confident that the positive work, which is taking place to ensure the matches go ahead, continues.” The diplomatic situation has already resulted in FIFA changing the officials due to take charge of a World Cup qualifier between Thailand and the UAE in June. A referee from Qatar had originally been slated to take charge of that match. The confederation said it would continue to liaise with FIFA over the two remaining World Cup qualifying matches to be played by both Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Saudi Arabia travel to face the UAE on Aug. 29 before hosting Japan on Sept. 5. The UAE play Iraq in Tehran in their final game. The AFC also announced an increase in prize money for the Asian Champions League from 2018, with the winners receiving $3 million and the runners-up claiming $1.5 million.(rtr)

He shifts his hands to his hips and steals a glance downfield to where the goalkeepers are doing individual work. “I’m thinking about my investments and retirement and things like that,” Arena cracked, then added: “I’m observing the players and looking at their habits, trying
to learn as much as I can about players on a daily basis. It’s not only game day. When you have a team and there’s 23 players, every player is important. So sometimes your contributions aren’t only on game or on the field and it’s other things. You look at the qualities of players both on and off the field.” With his quick wit off the field and demanding nature on it, Arena has instilled a calm and a swagger the U.S. squad needed, and that has bred success again after fans reached panic mode. I’m sure there’s plenty of those,” the U.S. coach acknowledged with a chuckle, “I don’t make that public information, though.” Arena walks across midfield soaking in the California sun and surveying the scene as his players take a lap and begin stretches ahead of training on a practice field adjacent to Avaya Stadium, home of the San Jose Earthquakes. He crosses his arms and paces — side to side, forward and backward — eyes up always. He shifts his hands to his hips and steals a glance downfield to where the goalkeepers are doing individual work. “I’m thinking about my investments and retirement and things like that,” Arena cracked, then added: “I’m observing the players and looking at their habits, trying
to learn as much as I can about players on a daily basis. It’s not only game day. When you have a team and there’s 23 players, every player is important. So sometimes your contributions aren’t only on game or on the field and it’s other things. You look at the qualities of players both on and off the field.” With his quick wit off the field and demanding nature on it, Arena has instilled a calm and a swagger the U.S. squad needed, and that has bred success again after fans reached panic mode. LOS ANGELES - The father of retired Australian tennis star Mark Philippoussis was arrested on Tuesday at his San Diego home on suspicion of sexually abusing two children who he has been coaching in the sport, police said. Nikolaos Philippoussis, 68, will be formally charged at an arraignmnent scheduled for Wednesday afternoon in San Diego County Superior Court, said Lieutenant Greg Rylaarsdam of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. Venezuela opposition to start two-day anti-Maduro shutdown
CARACAS - President Nicolas Maduro’s adversaries are to stage a two-day national strike from Wednesday in a final push to pressure him into abandoning a weekend election for a super-congress they say will institutionalize autocracy in Venezuela. The lengthy distribution chain starts from upstream to downstream. The sequence can be described as follows: farmerscollectors-mills-wholesalersretailer-final consumer. The price difference in the middle of the distribution chain reaches Rp3.500. The average price for farmers is in the range of Rp7.000 and up to the final consumer is Rp10.500. If the price difference can be cut, the price of rice will be around Rp9.500. The police earlier raided a

Kitaoka remarked in a press conference that his visit to Indonesia was the first of its kind as the president of JICA. “I have visited this country five or six times in the past, and each time I came here, I was surprised to know the developments and rapid economic growth,” Kitaoka noted. The JICA president noted that his meeting with Jokowi was held to discuss various issues, including Mass Rapid Transport, Patimbang Port in Subang, and a high-speed train project along the northern lane of Java Island. In the meantime, Mulyani explained that JICA had also participated in solving clean water and sanitation issues. “Japan has rich expertise in water treatment technology, and they have some development experience in small island areas, as they are also archipelagic countries,” Mulyani noted. Britain’s opposition Labour alarms bankers with Robin Hood tax
LONDON - Britain’s left-wing opposition party has held a series of meetings with top finance executives, setting out how it would levy taxes on one of the world’s biggest financial trading centres if it snatched power from Prime Minister Theresa May. With May’s grip on the leadership weakened by an ill-judged election last month and her Conservative party divided over Brexit, Labour is hoping her minority government will collapse and catapult its socialist leader Jeremy Corbyn into power. Last week, Labour’s finance spokesman John McDonnell chose the London Stock Exchange -- a bastion of British capitalism -- to invite feedback on proposals, telling leaders his party will form the next government, sources at the meeting said. Banks in London’s financial hub had paid little attention to relations with the Labour Party since 2015 when members elected Corbyn, a veteran campaigner who is seen as opposing much of what the City of London stands for. But the industry has been forced to take the party seriously after its much stronger than expected showing in the general election which left May to rely on the support of a small Northern Irish party to prop up her government. McDonnell told executives from Standard Chartered, the London Stock Exchange, the City of London Corporation, lawyers, lobbyists and accountants in two separate meetings last week about Labour’s
proposals to expand an existing tax on shares to include trading on other assets such as bonds and derivatives. Labour says the tax -- proposed to be around half of a percentage point or less on the value of a trade -- could earn 4.7 billion pounds ($6.1 billion) a year. Labour published details of the tax in the run up to the June election. Banking industry figures are concerned such a tax, debated in Western economies for decades, could exacerbate the impact of Brexit by prompting more businesses to flee London. CUTTING DOWN TO SIZE Avinash Persaud, an economist and a former hedge fund manager, whose work is the inspiration for the proposal and appeared alongside McDonnell at one of the events, says Britain’s finance sector is lightly taxed. Persaud said the tax would help kill off high-frequency trading and he favours reducing the size of Britain’s financial sector
because it has become too large. “I do feel there is a right size for the financial sector and in some countries it is too small, but in Britain and America, in the Anglo-Saxon countries, I do think it is too large,” Persaud told Reuters in an interview. “This means it is absorbing a lot of resources and as a result it becomes a very powerful player, a very powerful player in politics and is maybe exerting a disproportionate impact.” Labour wants to use the higher taxes on financial services -- Britain’s most profitable industry -- to fund increased public spending and end seven years of austerity under the ruling Conservatives. The proposed levy would be based on a tax of 0.2 percent of the value of trades for banks, hedge funds and other financial companies, and 0.5 per cent for non-financial businesses. Britain has the largest foreign exchange market and the second largest derivatives market in the
world, accounting for just under 40 percent of the world’s dealings in those markets, according to the Bank for International Settlements.
DAMAGE FEARED One executive who attended one of the Labour meetings said the proposals would damage London at time when its status is under threat because of Brexit. “If they win power and actually go ahead with this, this would be the straw that breaks the camel’s back,” according to the executive. Richard Benson, the co-head of portfolio investment at currency managers Millennium Global, said such a proposal would likely send a lot of trading activity away from Britain. “It is the selective advantage that is the problem with this, unless everyone else does it, people just leave,” said Benson, who was not at the meetings. But the Labour Party’s City spokesman Jonathan Reynolds told Reuters although he has been sceptical in the past about a transaction tax it would help reduce anger towards banks for causing the financial crisis and raise revenue. Banks “need to continue to rebuild public trust and support, and the tax contribution from the sector is a
significant part of that,” he said. The head of one large investment bank in London said they are seeking to secure meetings with Labour’s senior team as they are a potential ally in pushing for a softer Brexit and to find out more about their policies. “We need to have some sort of dialogue with Labour because it’s been zero,” the banker said. Some bankers predicted that if Labour were to be elected, it would adopt a more centrist approach like former French President Francois Hollande or Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. Another executive who attended one of the meetings with McDonnell said it was made clear that Labour was inviting reaction to the proposals. “They are actively encouraging feedback and wanting to meet people further to discuss feedback. I thought that was a very positive message,” he said. Others warned though that there has been little so far from the party’s rhetoric to indicate a major softening in tone. Ritual paraphernalia like kober (flags) are used as symbols of greatness and have philosophical meaning related to the power of the gods. Thus, it is common to find such objects bineng used in the the Hindu rituals of the Balinese community – especially in temples. The scale of these ritual objects is pursuant to the scale of the ritual being held. The use of flag or kober with the figure of Hanuman is frequently identified as a symbol of strength. Hanuman is a character in the Ramayana epic, often told in the form of a puppet show in Bali. According to mythology, Hanuman is son of Lord Bayu known as Maruti, he is not worshipped as a god. As Prof. Dr. I Made Bandem explains, Hanuman appears in the story Arjuna Pramada or Arjuna Pradalba. When Rama and Laksmana were leading their troops to build a bridge to Lanka, Arjuna came with Krishna. At that time, Rama-Laksmana and Krishna-Arjuna shared physical resemblances. Because the scene in this part of the story was crowded with many people the two pairs got mixed up so that Arjuna was with Rama and made the mistkae of saying that he could constuct a brigde from India to Lanka that was more robust than the one that Rama had made with his monkey army. Arjuna was asked to prove his words and he drew his arrow from South India to Lanka in order to crete the bridge. Since Rama was still in doubt about the strength of the bridge, Hanuman in the form of a little monkey tried to walk across the bridge, but as
he walked, he grew in size. By the time he arrived to the middle of the bridge, the structure collapsed under his weight. “This story goes beyond the standard patterns of the story that tells of the meeting of the the Ramayana Story with the story of the Mahabharata. Although this story is classified as the creation of puppeteers, it is said to have been narrated in a palm-leaf manuscript”, explained Prof. Bandem. As the story goes, Arjuna then kept his oath to worship Hanuman for his success. However, Hanuman could not stand to be worshiped by Arjuna so he finally apologized for having dared to dabble with a deity (pramada). With this apology he also promised to help Arjuna when needed. Arjuna took the initiative to make a flag with the figure of Hanuman that also symbolizes Lord Vayu which was then installed on his chariot. From this story was born the tradition of putting up these kober flags at temple. There is also another version of this story , said Dr. I Gusti Made Ngurah, which begins with Arjuna accompanied by Krishna who was send by Yudhishthira to the former kingdom of Lanka to look for a refferences that could for a symbol when carrying out a ritual. On the way, Arjuna and Krishna encountered a little monkey on a bridge. Arjuna was arrogant and insulted the little monkey. The little monkey answered that he was actually Hanuman and challenged Arjuna to try to destroy the bridge. Arjuna failed to meet this challenge. Arjuna was tested several times by the monkey but always failed. Finally the little monkey revealed his identity as Hanuman son of Lord Vayu. Hanuman said that he would respect Arjuna because he is a human but that Arjuna should also respect Hanuman as he is son of Lord Vayu and in this way there would be mutual respect. “Finally, Hanuman requested that Arjuna to create a flag that depicting Hanuman. This flag was then taken everywhere. The flag with the image of Hanuman ths became a symbol of Arjuna honoring Hanuman”, said Prof. Bandem. (kmb)

Assuredly it is not an ATM of any kind. To be sure, it has nothing to do with automated teller machines used to withdraw money. It stands for Anjungan Tukad Melangit (ATM) or literally meaning the platform of Melangit River located at Antugan hamlet, Jehem village, Tembuku, Bangli, as one of the favorite places for travelers that like to take selfie. At this ATM, visitors cannot only take pictures with the background of natural beauty of the Melangit River, but also in the swing and some other selfie facilities. Before becoming the target of travelers, the ATM was once made only by local youths to simply hang out together. The materials used to make the platform are only sober ones, namely wood and bamboo. However, after visitors took selfie and was uploaded to social media, the platform is getting more crowded with tourist visits. Operations Manager of the ATM, I Wayan Lendra, recently said the ATM has been famous since more than a year ago. Seeing the number of incoming visitors, he continues to make improvements and arrangement. If formerly there used to be only one platform, now there have been three permanently built platforms. “We make them permanent for the convenience of visitors,” he explained. In addition to the platform,
the ATM management also offers several other facilities suitable for taking pictures such as traditional swing and heart-shaped bamboo cane work. At the ATM, visitors can also feel the sensation of camping and picking oranges in person. If previously visitors to the ATM were only charged a voluntary levy, now the management charges admission ticket worth IDR 10,000 for adult and IDR 5,000 for child of domestic tourists. Meanwhile, foreign tourists are charged IDR 15,000 per person. So far, Lendra admitted that the rate of tourist visits to ATM is now increasing. In 2018, Air New Zealand plans to fly five times a week between Auckland and Denpasar using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners with an exmpanded season beginning in April. During peak periods this translates into more than 1,500 seats per week each way between Bali and Auckland. U.S. House approves new Russia sanctions, defying Trump
WASHINGTON - The U.S. House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to slap new sanctions on Russia and force President Donald Trump to obtain lawmakers’ permission before easing any sanctions on Moscow, in a rare rebuke of the Republican president. It was unclear how quickly the bill would make its way to the White House for Trump to sign into law or veto. The bill still must be passed by the Senate, which is mired in debate over efforts to overhaul the U.S. healthcare system as lawmakers try to clear the decks to leave Washington for their summer recess. The sanctions bill comes as lawmakers investigate possible meddling by Russia in the 2016 presidential election and potential collusion by Republican Trump’s campaign. Moscow has denied it worked to influence the election in Trump’s favor, and he has denied his campaign colluded. The White House said the president had not yet decided whether he would sign the measure. Rejecting the bill - which would potentially hamper his hopes of pursuing improved relations with Moscow - would carry a risk that his veto could be overridden by lawmakers.
“While the president supports tough sanctions on North Korea, Iran and Russia, the White House is reviewing the House legislation and awaits a final legislative package for the president’s desk,” said spokeswoman Sarah Sanders. House members backed the bill, which also imposes sanctions on Iran and North Korea, by a nearunanimous margin of 419-3, with strong support from Trump’s fellow Republicans as well as Democrats, despite objections from Trump, who wanted more control over the ability to impose sanctions. The Republican-controlled Senate passed an earlier version of the bill with near-unanimous support. The House added the North Korea measures after becoming frustrated with the Senate’s failure to advance a bill it passed in May. Representative Ed Royce, the Republican chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said the three countries “are threatening vital U.S. interests and destabilizing their neighbors. It is well past
time that we forcefully respond.” But the combined bill has run into objections from some senators, who are unhappy that the House added the North Korea sanctions after holding up the measure for more than a month. Senate leaders have not said when they might consider the House bill. Senator Bob Corker, the Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he was not sure the bill would “fly through” his chamber. “The only language we agreed to was Iran and Russia. So adding North Korea on, I just don’t know how we’re going to deal with it yet,” Corker told reporters. “The better route would have been to send over what had been agreed to.” The bill had raised concerns in the European Union, where U.S. allies depend on supplies of Russian gas. SEOUL - A half-hour’s drive north of Seoul, along a highway lined with barbed wire, lie two shopping malls the size of several football stadiums, a stone’s throw from the world’s most militarized border. The malls are in the city of Paju, gateway to the U.N. truce village of Panmunjom, where military officers from the combatants of the 1950-53 Korean war discuss armistice matters -- when the two sides are on speaking terms, which they aren’t these days. “Fairy tales come true in Paju”, is the advertising lure from the Korean Tourism Board. But it was nightmares that were all too true here during the Korean war, when Paju featured some of its fiercest battles. Paju is home to the country’s only “enemy’s cemetery”, where the remains of Chinese and North Korean soldiers are buried. That’s all but forgotten history now. On the rooftop of the Lotte Premium Outlet, children and their parents can view North Korea across the Imjin River through binoculars. The mall also features a merry-go-round, cinema, and a mini-train. At Shinsegae Paju Premium Outlet, about a dozen children jump and scream around a fountain inside the mall on a sizzling, July summer day. Just a couple miles away is a village modelled after France’s tourism centre of Provence, where restaurants, bakeries and clothing shops are decorated like a children’s playbook. Elsewhere in Paju, kids carved wood to make Pinocchio dolls at a museum, while adults tasted wine made of meoru, a Korean wild grape, at a farm. Paju, indeed, shows little signs of the tensions that have arisen since North Korea marked the U.S. July 4th holiday with a successful launch of what it said was an inter-
continental ballistic missile. The missile test prompted the United States and South Korea this month to conduct air force bomber exercises in the skies near here. LITTERING LAND MINES But at Paju’s Provence Village, Kim Ki-deok, a 41-year-old office worker from south of Seoul and father of a 4-year-old boy, said he doesn’t feel any more danger from being close to the border. “If North Korea really wants, they can shoot missiles far away,” said Kim. “I feel refreshed and would like to come here again.” The sense of insouciance can even be seen at the U.S. military’s Camp Bonifas on the outskirts of town, home to a three-hole golf course that Sports Illustrated once called the “world most dangerous golf course” because of the Korean War vintage land mines littering the area. The Korean War, in which the United States fought alongside South Korea and China with the North, ended in a truce that has yet to be replaced by a peace agreement and has left the two sides technically at war. It means South Koreans have long grown accustomed to living in a doomsday scenario, one that includes up to 10,000 artillery guns pointed toward the South and capable at any moment, in the words of North Korea’s propaganda machine, of turning Seoul into a “sea of fire” and a “pile of ashes.” For 30-year-old Park Cholmin, it’s nothing more than empty threats. “It’s just a show or performance. I think North Korea has a lot more to lose than to gain by turning Seoul into a sea of fire,” said the video game producer from Seoul, visiting the Shinsegae mall with his girlfriend to buy her a birthday gift. Sperm count falling sharply in developed world, researchers say
LONDON - Sperm counts in men from America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand have dropped by more than 50 percent in less than 40 years, researchers said on Tuesday.
They also said the rate of decline is not slowing. Both findings -- in a meta-analysis bringing together various studies -- pointed to a potential decline in male health and fertility. “This study is an urgent wake-up call for researchers and health authorities around the world to investigate the causes of the sharp ongoing drop in sperm count,” said Hagai Levine, who co-led the work at the Hebrew University-Hadassah Braun School of Public Health and Community Medicine in Jerusalem. The analysis did not explore reasons for the decline, but researchers said falling sperm counts have previously been linked to various factors such as exposure to certain chemicals and pesticides, smoking, stress and obesity. This suggests measures of sperm quality may reflect the impact of modern living on male health and act as a “canary in the coal mine” signalling broader health risks, they said. Studies have reported declines in sperm count since the early 1990s, but many of those have been questioned because they did not account for potentially
major confounding factors such as age, sexual activity and the types of men involved. Working with a team of researchers in the United States, Brazil, Denmark, Israel and Spain, Levine screened and brought together the findings of 185 sperm count studies from 1973 to 2011 and then conducted a so-called meta-regression analysis. The results, published in the journal Human Reproduction Update, showed a 52.4 percent decline in sperm concentration and a 59.3 percent decline in total sperm count among North American, European, Australian and New Zealand men. The former measures the concentration of semen in a man’s ejaculation, while the latter is semen concentration multiplied by volume. In contrast, no significant decline was seen in South America, Asia and Africa. The researches noted, however, that far fewer studies have been conducted in these regions. Experts asked to comment on the work said it was a comprehensive and well-conducted analysis and did a good job of adjusting for confounders that could have skewed its findings. Daniel Brison, a specialist in embryology and stem cell biology at Britain’s Manchester University, said the findings had “major implications not just for fertility but for male health and wider public health”. Doctors view technology as largely problematic SAN FRANCISCO - When an endurance runner with a history of heart failure felt under the weather, he brought his activity tracker data from a workout to his cardiologist. Dr. Michael Blum examined the runner’s heart rate readings. The cardiologist could see when his patient was pushing to climb a hill or to increase his speed, and when he was slowing down. “I could tell how hard he was working,” said Blum, a professor at the University of California, San Francisco. “I had this amazing data.” Ultimately, though, he had to inform his worried patient: “This is all really interesting, but I can’t tell you what it means.” Blum joined three other doctors who spoke last week on the promise – and the reality – of technology in a San Francisco panel discussion sponsored by Medscape and titled “Technology, Patients and the Art of Medicine.” Technology in the form of diagnostic software helped one of the panelists, Dr. Abraham Verghese, conclude that a patient was suffering from neurosarcoidosis – a diagnosis the Stanford University professor didn’t initially consider but one a software program immediately recognized given the patient’s symptoms. Technology offers doctors a view inside patients’ hearts, brains and bowels. And technology may speed the diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy, the leading cause of blindness, said panelist Dr. Jessica Mega, who leads the healthcare team at Verily, formerly Google Life. Nonetheless, 69 percent of the 100 doctors in the audience said increased reliance on technology and electronic health records only served to separate them from their patients. As evidence of the problem, the panelists cited apps that claim to do things they don’t really do, like accurately measure blood pressure. But the biggest problem stem-
ming from technology for the doctors, and the bane of many doctors’ existence, is the electronic health record, also known as an EHR. The U.S. government has touted electronic records, initially designed for billing, as a way to dramatically improve patient care and has used financial incentives to speed their adoption. The hope was that the widespread use of EHRs would reduce medical errors, inefficiencies and inappropriate care. The effort has failed, according to Dr. Eric Topol, editor-in-chief of Medscape and the panel moderator. When encountering any constraint, it should be submitted so that all requirements can be fulfilled because this has something to do with the SOP of the permit issuance, so it will not be criticized. We will discuss it later in the meeting,” said Susrama accompanied by some members such as Putu Kamawijaya, Nyoman Renteb and others. In the future, added Putu Kamawijaya, it needs to establish a
special committee. Thus, the study can be juxtaposed with regulation. According to him, it is necessary for surveillance as well as data collection. Jembrana indeed needs investors but must be supervised due to related to permits and regionally generated revenue (PAD). “Jembrana needs investors, but they still should be directed so as not to be having no license,” he explained. As a result after performing urine test, two residents were declared positive to have consumed ecstasy and another positive to have consumed benzodiazepine. The temple belongs to one of the Catur Angga temples with the status as the sad kahyangan jagat of Bali. The Tamba Waras temple is included in the jajar kemiri. Those belonging to this temple group are the Muncaksari and the underneath Tamba Waras located at the right side of the Batukaru Temple. Geographically, the Tamba Waras Temple is located on the south slope of Mount Batukaru, precisely at Sangketan, Penebel, Tabanan. The temple located on the same line as the Batukaru Temple sits on the altitude of about 725 meters above sea level. To get to this temple, pilgrims have to cover a distance of about 22 km from the town of Tabanan. In terms of the temple structure, the Tamba Waras Temple is also nicknamed as the warehouse of universal medicine. It is estimated to have been established in the twelfth century. Before saying prayers, all the pilgrims should first do self-purificatory rite or melukat at the sapta Ganges shower. Films from Jolie, Clooney, Aronofsky among TIFF premieres
LOS ANGELES — George Clooney’s crime comedy “Suburbicon,” Angelina Jolie’s Khmer Rouge drama “First They Killed My Father,” and Darren Aronofsky’s horror feature “mother!” starring Jennifer Lawrence are among the films that will be playing at the Toronto International Film Festival this year. Festival programmers Piers Handling and Cameron Bailey unveiled the initial 47 film lineup Tuesday. The Toronto festival, along with Venice and Telluride, is considered one of the launching pads for Hollywood’s awards season and a best-of display of films from other festivals. Some of the buzzier films set to play include Joe Wright’s Winston Churchill biopic “The Darkest Hour,” starring Gary Oldman; Guillermo del Toro’s Cold War-set fairy tale “The Shape of Water”; Martin McDonagh’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and Alexander Payne’s satire “Downsizing,” starring Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig, which will have previously opened the Venice Film Festival. French fire forces evacuation of 10,000 people
RIVIERA - At least 10,000 people have been forced to flee campsites and homes after a new fire broke out along the French Riviera. Wildfires have already consumed swathes of forest in tourist-packed southeastern France in recent days, as well as on the island of Corsica. The new blaze, in the middle of the holiday season, is raging near Bormes-les-Mimosas, southwest of the popular resort Saint-Tropez on the Mediterranean coast. The fire broke out just before 11pm on Tuesday and burned 800 hectares of forest by Wednesday morning, with 540 firefighters sent to tackle the blaze. Around 3,000 campers were among those evacuated from La Londe, La Lavandou and Bormeles-Mimosas. A fire service official said: “The evacuations, at least 10,000, followed the progression of the fire. It’s an area that doubles or triples its population in summer.”Among those evacuated were British holidaymakers at the Camp du Domaine campsite in Bormes-les-Mimosas. All 1,000 camping plots across the site were evacuated, according to Oliver Williams, deputy head teacher at St John’s Primary School in Redhill, Surrey, who is staying at
the resort with his family. He told Sky News: “My wife woke me up about two o’clock this morning, saying she’d heard the car alarms and people shouting ‘allez, allez’. “They were chucking everything in the back of a car and trying to get out. That was all a bit surreal and it took a moment to really sink in. “My wife had mentioned the fact there was a glow over the back of the campsite hill and there was a fire.” Mr Williams’ family headed to the campsite’s private beach, where many of the 3,000 evacuated, including French, German and Dutch tourists, had gathered. “We stayed from about 2am until about 7am and then we were thinking we could probably make our
way back to the plot,” he said. “But we were told we weren’t allowed to go back because the Canadairs were about to fly over and drop water on to the fire. “That’s mixed with some chemicals so they keep people well back.” He added: “We were all just watching to see what was going to happen with the fire - whether it was going to progress towards us or carry on going over the hill.” Mr Williams praised French firefighters for their “absolutely amazing job” in tackling the multiple blazes in the area.Fellow Briton Lisa Minot, The Sun’s travel editor, is also staying at the resort - where the campsite’s sprinkler system was being used in an attempt to stop the blaze jumping across from the hills.
She said: “Everybody was told to evacuate to the beach and they’re still there and they have not allowed us to go back to our caravan. “It’s utter chaos, there are no provisions or anything else... there’s no one telling us what to do.” But Ms Minot revealed the efforts are being “hampered by incredibly high winds”. Her mother Carol Bielfield said holidaymakers were trying to stay composed. “It was keep calm and carry on, make some tea, serve some biscuits and hope that you get some information,” she said. “But we’ve had no information at all. Everyone gave up, started leaving the beach and then the sirens went off and we were told to go back to the beach, but there’s not been any information.” Local tourist site Fort de Bregancon, the former official retreat of French presidents, has been shut due to the fire.More than 4,000 firefighters and troops have been deployed in total, along with 19
water bomber planes, since the fires broke out in France on Monday. Six more of the planes have been ordered by the French government while extra firefighters have been drafted in from the north of the country.
