‘Game of Thrones’ author teases two possible new books in 2018

LOS ANGELES - Author George R.R. Martin has hinted at the possibility of not one but two new “Game of Thrones” books in 2018, whetting the appetites of fans who have been waiting for the next installment of the epic saga since 2011.

Martin, whose “A Song of Ice and Fire” novels were adapted into HBO’s hit medieval fantasy series “Game of Thrones,” currently is working on the sixth installment, “Winds of Winter,” continuing the story from 2011’s “A Dance With Dragons.” “I am still working on it, I am still months away (how many? good question), I still have good days and bad days, and that’s all I care to say,” Martin wrote on his blog, grrm.livejournal.com,

Wildfires lay waste to hillsides along French Riviera

Martin has come under fire from avid “Game of Thrones” fans for taking so long to finish “Winds of Winter” and starting work on other projects. The author said in his blog post that he was working on a two-part history of Westeros’ Targaryen kings called “Fire and Blood,” with the first part to be released sometime late 2018 or early 2019. A trailer for the HBO show, released last week, shows a brewing battle between Cersei Lannister, who currently sits on the Iron Throne, and Daenerys Targaryen, who has traveled with her army and dragons to reclaim her ancestral home. The series will conclude next year with the eighth season, which will reveal who will sit on the Iron Throne. A series of spin-offs is being developed at HBO. (rtr)

NICE/MARSEILLE - Firefighters battled wind-whipped infernos along the French Riviera coast on Tuesday as the flames torched vegetation on hills overlooking glitzy Mediterranean resorts thronged by summer holidaymakers. Local authorities said several firefighters were injured and one hospitalised but there were no immediate reports of deaths, unlike with similar wildfires that have killed dozens elsewhere in southern Europe, notably Portugal.

love with you in the first place. You fearlessly put them on display, and in doing so, brought us together and taught us to be more human,” the statement added. Bennington, who was twice married, leaves six children. The band said they and the singer’s wife Talinda and his family appreciated the love and support shown by fans and other musicians over his death. Bennington was the second American rock star to die by suicide in the last two months. Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell, 52, a close friend of Bennington, hanged himself in a Detroit hotel room in May. (rtr)

One blaze that erupted late on Monday, near the Croix Valmer resort and the yacht-filled marinas of Saint-Tropez, sent clouds of thick smoke into azure skies within view of busy beaches. Authorities said that blaze had engulfed 650 hectares of land in one of several spots where fires prompted closure of parts of the local road network, a rail line and at one stage part of the A51 motorway in the southeastern corner of France. Weather forecasters said strong winds would persist for another day or two days at least, heightening the risk that even spots where firefighters were close to containing the flames could fall prey to another flare-up. One of the blazes was thought to have been started by a bolt of lightning, but carelessly discarded cigarette butts are often blamed for setting tinderbox areas of the midsummer southern coast alight. Another fire that scorched at least 800 hectares of land in the picturesque Vaucluse region further inland was believed to be under control on Tuesday morning, local firefighters said. But a further blaze was meanwhile ripping through swathes of hillside on the island of Corsica that lies off the French coast in a corner of the Mediterranean near Italy. Upwards of 1,400 hectares of forest and woodland had already been destroyed by fire by Monday

night, when a small number of people in the village of Mirabeau and a dozen horses were evacuated to safety, authorities said. More than 270 firefighters were forced to fight another blaze in Carros, north of Nice, which burned a house, three vehicles and a warehouse. Experts blamed a combination of a lack of rain and the Mistral wind fanning the flames in the already tinderbox-dry conditions. Authorities said the Var department, which includes Saint-Tropez and much of the Riviera, has been placed at an unprecedented level of threat of forest fires. The south of the department, which also includes the resorts of Frejus, Saint-Maxime and Toulon, was graded an “exceptional” risk of a blaze with the north of the department judged “very severe”.The south of the Alpesde-Haute-Provence was also “very severe” and the Bouches-du-Rhone department ordered people to stay away from several mountain areas surrounding Marseille and Aix-enProvence due to the risks. Narrow land, farmers have no market orientation

DENPASAR - There are differences between farmers in Bali in particular from farmers overseas. Farmers overseas can manage farmland up to hundreds of hectares, while farmers in Bali only work on land 0.25 hectare. In terms of intensification, foreign farmers are also very advanced. “We do not produce with the orientation for market needs. Even though the market need is available, only a little they can supply because the land area is only 0.25 hectare per farmer,” said Dewa Sadguna, the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Warmadewa University, on Monday (Jul. 24). For example, tulip farms in the Netherlands, peanut farm in Arizona and so forth are very wide. In Bali, the cultivated land remains small. “Nevertheless, it does not mean we are not concerned about it. The

most important to Balinese farmers is that he does the activities with pleasure. If the results can be accepted by community and farmers are happy, that’s enough. Financially, they do not think about a bigger farm. Most importantly, they can eat and be happy,” he concluded. Simplicity of the way of thinking makes Balinese farmers have no market orientation. Aside from the application of technology, Balinese farmers also lose far away from overseas farmers. The technology in use is not yet modern. “Unlike farmers overseas, they do watering by airplane,” he said. In terms of education, Balinese farmers also have low levels of education. In the meantime, the interest of young people to be farmers has not been so high. It happens because younger generation has not seen the results of creative and innovative farming. BANGLI — In Bangli, there are 27 tourism villages developed to be made into tourist destination. However, among the tourism villages owned, only a few of them are capable of developing, while the remaining villages are difficult as if they are still ‘dormant.’ Promotion Division Head of the Bangli Tourism and Culture Agency, I Wayan Merta, did not dismiss on Monday (Jul. 24) that of the 27 tourism villages in Bangli, only a few are able to develop, while the remaining is unable to develop maximally. “Of the many tourism villages, only a few can develop, such as Penglipuran. To advance all of them is required seriousness of all parties ranging from the management to local residents,” he said. With such conditions, he said, the management and local community actually play an important role to promote the tourism village pursuant to their seriousness. Both parties must be more proactive to promote their tourism village in order to be able to develop well. Thus, the management does not depend on the government to promote the tourism village. To that end, it must synergize with relevant agencies to create programs related to tourism development at the village. According to him, actually the 27 tourism villages have very ordinary potential ranging from the aspect of nature, handicraft to agriculture. If they can be developed well, it is not impossible the tourism villages managed will develop by degrees in the future. “The government has already issued the decree of tourism village. Having got the decree, the tourism village should more actively manage and promote their tourist village. For example, it

can be done through social media and other ways. So, we hope the underdeveloped tourism villages can vivaciously promote theirs. At least, they can get the advantages of tourist visit in the future. Additionally, the government will also help promote them,” he said. Furthermore, the improvement of facilities and infrastructure including human resources must also be carried out to support the development of tourist object. Without these supports, it will be difficult for them to develop. “For example, improvement of infrastructure such as parking space, application of seven charms in the field is supporting elements for the development of tourism villages,” said Merta. In the meantime, Regent of Bangli, I Made Gianyar, previously said that many tourism villages are still underdeveloped and it is not the mistake of government. It happens because the villages have very minimal spirit to develop their tourism potential. Besides, many of them have not owned a clear management. “The regent has provided an opportunity to move forward. To be able to develop, it will depend on the spirit of the village itself, do not blame on the government,” he said. He requested that in the future more and more tourism villages in Bangli will be developed like Penglipuran, so the underdeveloped tourism villages will start moving and vivaciously develop their potential. Moreover, the funds managed by the villages are quite large, both from village fund allocation (ADD) and village funds (DD). “Now, whether the tourism is advanced or not will highly depend on the management of the community at the local village,” concluded Made Gianyar. Japan launches “telework” campaign to ease congestion, reform work culture

Britain launches fund to boost electric battery technology

BIRMINGHAM - Britain launched a 246 million-pound ($320 million) fund on Monday to boost the development and manufacturing of electric batteries, a major growth area for the car and energy sectors. The scheme, which allows those in business and academia to apply for government funds to work on a range of possible electric battery schemes, is part of Britain’s industrial strategy which Prime Minister Theresa May published in January. It is designed to take a more hands-on approach to developing key industries to help protect the economy as Britain leaves the European Union. Automakers are racing to build greener vehicles and improve charge times in a bid to meet rising customer demand and meet air quality targets but Britain lacks sufficient manufacturing capacity, an area ministers are keen to build up. The first tranche comprises a 45 million-pound pot of money which will help to establish a ‘Battery Institute’ for research to help improve the affordability of the technology, which needs to bolster charge and use times, reduce storage sizes and boost capacity. Business minister Greg Clark also wants to establish a “National Battery Manufacturing Development facility” which would support the building of electric batteries for the automotive sector. “Joining together the research, development, application and manufacture of energy storage tech-

nologies – and specifically battery storage – is a huge opportunity for the energy sector and the automotive sector alike,” Clark said in a speech in Birmingham. In May, representatives from politics, academia and business in the central English city of Coventry pitched plans to receive part of the funds for a “National Battery Prototyping Centre” which would focus on research and development and testing. Japan’s Nissan already builds its electric Leaf at its north of England plant but Britain’s biggest carmaker Jaguar Land Rover is building its first low-emissions model in Austria. Its chief executive told Reuters last year that a number of factors needed to be put in place before JLR would build electric models in Britain, including pilot testing and support from science. Germany’s BMW favours building its first electric model at its Oxford plant, two sources told Reuters last week, in a decision which is due to be announced in September. Clark also said that up to 40 billion pounds could be saved by 2050 with a range of measures designed to better manage energy use, including allowing users to control their appliances from their smartphones. But businesses have become more cautious about future investment in Britain ahead of Brexit, worried that the country may lose unfettered and free trade with its biggest export partner at the end of two-year divorce talks in March 2019. TOKYO - Japan on Monday launched a scheme to promote “telework”, or working from home, in an effort to ease congestion when Tokyo hosts the 2020 Olympics, as well as soften a notoriously rigid work culture. Almost 930 companies, including Suntory Holdings, Ajinomoto Co, and Tokyu Construction Co are participating in “Telework Day,” to be held on July 24 each year from now until the Olympics opening ceremony set for July 24, 2020. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s government has introduced policies to shorten working hours, raise contract workers’ pay, and curb abuse of labour laws. Telework could be another way to reform working practices that some say are behind the times. “Once the Olympics start it will be hard to get to work, so we are doing this as an experiment,” said Takashi Kozu, 61, president of the Ricoh Institute of Sustainability and Business. “The lifestyles of younger generations are changing, so firms should offer alternative work styles to maintain employees’ incentive.” Kozu said he worked from home on Monday morning, planned to attend an off-site meeting in the afternoon and would not show up in the office until early evening. Telework is more common in other

countries, especially in the information technology sector, where employees regularly use teleconferencing or log on from the neighbourhood cafe. But it has been slow to catch on in other industries in Japan, partly because firms have put a lot of emphasis on being physically present at the office, often for 12 hours or more. But Japan, Inc. is starting to change its ways and introduce more flexible work hours. As the population ages, the labour force is shrinking at an alarming rate, and a hard-driving work culture makes it difficult to attract and retain workers. Some companies are starting to realise that long, inflexible hours of work actually keep labour productivity low. In some cases Japan’s working culture can be fatal, and it is not uncommon for workers to commit suicide or suffer a stroke because of excessive hours. “We are doing this for the Olympics, but the long-term goal is to have more humane working conditions,” said Hiroshi Ohnishi, a planner at the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, which is promoting “Telework Day.” “In the past, working long hours was considered a virtue, but this thinking will not hold up in the future.” (rtr)

DENPASAR — The threat of water crisis in Bali can be regarded as a complex problem. It happens due to the decrease in quantity of underground water or seawater intrusion that cannot be seen by naked eyes. On the other hand, people only see who is wrong in this matter.

To accelerate the completion of this issue, the Klungkung food security and fisheries agency has been asked to follow up. “Do not let this extraordinary potential, having been established as a marine conservation area (KKP), get no attention,” he said. Suwirta asserted if not immediately responded, the damage to coral reef is considered to be getting more serious. Such condition is getting worse if coupled with the action of investors dumping waste into the sea. “Many pontoons are installed at the location. Recently, there is a permit issued by the province, I cannot talk much. Water sport business is increasing,” he said. To avoid the emergence of other problems, we will prepare a management board for tourism in Nusa Penida. “It is being prepared, we will not rush. WASHINGTON - Two Chinese fighter jets intercepted a U.S. Navy surveillance plane over the East China Sea at the weekend, with one jet coming within about 300 feet (91 meters) of the American aircraft, U.S. officials said on Monday. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said initial reports showed one of the Chinese J-10 aircraft came close enough to the U.S. EP-3 plane on Sunday to cause the American aircraft to change direction. One of the officials said the Chinese jet was armed and the interception happened 80 nautical miles (148 km) from the Chinese city of Qingdao. The Pentagon said the encounter between the aircraft was unsafe, but added that the vast majority of interactions were safe. In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang referred questions to the “relevant department”, a reference to the

defence ministry, which has yet to comment. The United States had frequently carried out surveillance activities near China’s coast, Lu told a daily news briefing. “This is not conducive to mutual trust between the Chinese and U.S. militaries, and constitutes a threat to China’s legitimate security,” Lu added. “We hope the United States can cease this kind of surveillance activity.” Incidents such as Sunday’s intercept are relatively common. According to I Made Murawan, a puppeteer from Puaya hamlet, Batuan, Sukawati, Gianyar, when staging puppet shadow featuring the storyline of Mahabharata, the gamelan instrument in use is a set of gender or four instruments only while if accompanying the performance of Ramayana epic, it will certainly use bebatelan gamelan instrument. In addition to four pieces of gender instruments, it will use other instruments such as a pair of drum, kempur and so on. The gamelan composition played when the performance of puppet shadow begins with tabuh petegak like the Sekar Sungsang and selendro scales. After that, the gamelan composition played is Tabuh Pamungkah used when commencing to play the klayon to finish of the klayon. Then, it is resumed with paguneman where the puppet is stabbed accompanied by gamelan composition entitled Tulang Lindung. After stabbing the puppets, it is continued with gamelan entitled Panyacah Parwa in the form of alas arum. When the puppet is told to walk or move, it will use angkat-angkatan gamelan

music. Moreover, when the puppet is crying it uses special mesem gamelan composition for slanteyed puppets. For the puppet with glowering eyes, it will use rebong gamelan music and during wartime it will use bebatelan. “Thus, in once staging from the beginning to finish, it will use approximately 10 gamelan compositions with an average duration of two minutes except for the Tabuh Petegak whose duration is approximately 15 minutes,” he said. In ngaben or cremation ceremony, though the carrying of bade tower has been accompanied by baleganjur gamelan music, it will also use the puppet gender. He told it is meant to provide strains of beauty, peace and comfort for the atman (soul) that will go to heaven. While the baleganjur like Gora functions to improve and raise the spirit of the community when they are obliged to lift the heavy bade. The gamelan played is usually called glagah puun meaning that it heads for fireplace or it can be bebatelan meaning the journey of the atman to the last abode. When asked about the use of gender gamelan instrument accompanying the rituals like metatah (tooth filing), he said that Balinese Hindus believe that by chanting or playing gender in the ritual procession they will get a big influence that is able to avoid someone from thinking negatively and wishing to disrupt smoothness of a ceremony. Played in Makotekan and Slendro Scale Gender musical instrument becomes a compulsory accompaniment for a puppet show in Bali. So, in the staging there are two arts played together namely the art of leather puppet along with all the plays and dialogues as well as the art of gender gamelan composition of the puppet show. Besides, the gender is often used or played in various ritual activities such as in the implementation of tooth filing activities and when the bade tower carrying corpse is brought to cemetery. Thus, gender becomes a distinctive gamelan instrument when compared to other musical instruments. An artist and lecturer at the ISI Denpasar, I Nyoman Astita, said although in terms of the form it is not different from other gamelan instrument, the gender of puppet is indeed the beginning or inspiration of the

iron or copper gamelan instrument fastened or tied in such a way by using a rope to float and generate a battier tone when compared to other old gamelan types commonly put on the pedestal. When playing, the gamelan players are using both hands where left hand plays the tone or the main melody while right hand play in makotekan way namely forming series of rhythm tone of the two gamelan instruments. Furthermore, he said that playing the puppet gender must be in pair or two pieces because gamelan play in the right hand of both players will produce a different pattern where if gamelan artist plays nyangsih, the partner will play pepolosan. Thus, playing in pairs will result in a rhythm that integrates the sangsih and papolosan known as makotekan. “The advantages of this puppet gender to me is in terms of technique and playing technique that are fairly sophisticated and complicated because at the same time two hands will play individually or counter point with the techniques and even a different beat can produce a different rhythm as well,” he said. He added that in general, Balinese gamelan instrument using resonator in the form of bamboo underneath as a sound repeater will usually be set so that the pair can result in ngumbang-ngisep or waving tones. So, when the pair is played even though one tone only will produce a vibrating or waving

sound. Similar thing is also found in the puppet gender, so in addition to being able to makotekan the use of a pair of puppet gender is also aimed to produce a waving sound. However, the main puppet gender in use in a staging consists of 4 pieces namely a pair of pamade or the gender having bass sound because of lower octave score and a pair of barangan whose octave score is higher but both will produce an interesting and harmonious tone to be heard. He added that puppet gender has slendro-scaled instrument with single scale interval from one tone to another. In the meantime, the other gamelan instrument like gong kebyar and gong gambang using Pelog scale has two tones with higher interval. For example, the interval is usually 1 so that when reaching 2 tones the interval becomes 1.5. If the tone dong-deng-dung-dang-ding where from dong to deng has the interval of 1, from deng to dung will be 1.5 and then from dung to dang has the interval of 1, and from dang to ding has the interval of 1.5. Another artist, I Made Murawan, said that although the characteristics of puppet gender tend to be tender. However, it is tailored to the designation because it also has fierce and violent gamelan composition. “For example, when accompanying puppet performances and entering war session, it surely must use a fast and fierce tempo gamelan composition like the bebatelan,” he explained. DOHA - Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan left Qatar on Monday after two days in the Gulf trying to mediate in the worst row among Arab states for years but there was no sign he had made any progress. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt severed diplomatic and travel ties with Qatar in June, accusing it of supporting Islamist militants. Doha denies that. Turkey has been Qatar’s most powerful ally in the dispute, rushing through legislation to send more troops to its base in Doha as a sign of support. Kuwaiti and Western efforts to end the crisis have yielded little so far. The four Arab states want Qatar to reduce ties with their arch-foe Iran, close down the Turkish military base and shut the Al Jazeera TV channel, which they view as critical of their governments. Qatari state news agency QNA said that Qatar’s ruler, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad alThani, had “reviewed regional developments, specifically the

Gulf crisis and efforts to contain it and to resolve it through diplomatic means...” in talks with Erdogan. The agency said the talks also covered joint efforts to combat terrorism and reviewed defence and economic cooperation. Several contingents of Turkish troops with columns of armoured vehicles have arrived in Doha since the crisis erupted on June 5. Under a 2014 agreement, Ankara could send in as many as 1,000 troops. Turkey and Qatar have been important backers of the Muslim Brotherhood movement that has challenged entrenched Arab rulers and Erdogan has his roots in an Islamist political party. Saudi Arabia and the UAE have designated the Brotherhood a terrorist organisation. Before he arrived in Qatar, Erdogan visited Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. In Saudi Arabia, he discussed with King Salman “efforts to combat terrorism and its sources of funding”, state news agency SPA said, without elaborating. (rtr)

Indonesia speed boat capsizes, killing at least 10 - police

JAKARTA - A speed boat capsized off Indonesia’s Borneo island on Tuesday, killing at least 10 people with several others believed missing, police and rescue officials said. Indonesia’s search and rescue agency said in a statement that 40 people were estimated to have been on board at the time of the accident off North Kalimantan province.

“For the time being the number of people on board is still an initial estimation. There could be people who are not on the manifest. We are waiting for people who may be reported

missing by family members,” a search and rescue official said. There have been several accidents in the waterways between Indonesia and Malaysia.

In November, more than half of the 101 passengers aboard a boat died after it hit a reef and sank off the Indonesian island of Batam, south of Singapore.

Four months earlier, a boat sank while en-route to Batam. Malaysian authorities recovered eight bodies and rescued 34 people.(rtr)

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency (BNPB) has warned of an escalating threat of forest fires with the dry season expected to peak in coming months, while hot spots detected in the province of Aceh have already been causing choking smoke. Fires had spread to around 64 hectares (158 acres) of fields and forests in Aceh, a northern province on the island of Sumatra, producing haze and some residents had been taken to hospital due to breathing problem, the agency said on Tuesday. “The peak of the dry season is predicted to be in August and September, so the threat of forest and field fires, and drought will escalate,” Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for BNPB said in a statement.

The fires in Aceh started on Tuesday last week and authorities are still trying to extinguish them in some areas. Meanwhile, a satellite image showed 170 hot spots across Indonesia as of Monday evening, Nugroho said. Indonesia is regularly hit by forest fires, which can result in choking smoke blowing across to neighbouring countries like Singapore and Malaysia. Indonesia suffered some its worst forest fires in 2015, hitting mainly the island of Sumatra and in Kalimantan, the Indonesian portion of Borneo island. The World Bank, citing government data, said that 2.6 million hectares (6.4 million acres) of land in Indonesia burned between June and October 2015, causing $16 billion of estimated economic damage.

Draining and conversion of peatland, often driven by palm oil plantations, contributed to the intensity of haze from the fires, the World Bank said. The head of Indonesia’s Peatland Restoration Agency told a conference in May there would be “no more haze going to the neighbours”, as authorities implemented new measure to combat fires, the Thomson Reuters Foundation reported. Indonesia’s Environment and Forestry Ministry said on Monday she wanted to make permanent a current moratorium on issuing new licences to use land designated as primary forest and peatland. By November last year, the government has put more than 66 million hectares under the coverage of the moratorium. (rtr)

Sp rt Game on: Suning leads China’s $2 bln soccer rights frenzy

BEIJING/SHANGHAI - In the highstakes race to control soccer TV rights in China, with a potential market of hundreds of millions of fans, an electronics retailer is betting up to $2 billion that could give it a near monopoly on broadcasting the sport at home. Suning Commerce Group, a retail conglomerate with annual revenue of around $22 billion, owns Italian soccer club Inter Milan, and is fast securing the rights to air matches from Europe’s top leagues in China.

It already owns rights to Spain’s La Liga and the Chinese Super League, has bought future seasons of top-flight German and English soccer, and is looking to secure Italy’s Serie A and Asian soccer, three people familiar with its plans said. Suning’s rise to prominence is all part of China’s power-grab in world soccer, with Chinese clubs paying top dollar for star players and Chinese tycoons buying clubs across Europe. Backed by Beijing, China’s domestic sporting market - from soccer to basketball and beyond - could be worth 5 trillion yuan ($740 billion) by 2025. Key to a share of that profit is the right to show matches from major leagues, and Suning’s PPTV video streaming website is sweeping most rivals out of the way. Competition from Sina Sports and technology giant Tencent, though, means it’s costly to stay out in front. “Historically in China, there was good interest from fans but not a lot of competition between media rights buyers,” said Jamie Reigle, Hong Kong-based Asia Pacific managing director for Manchester United, the world’s wealthiest soccer club. “Now you have the digital platforms that have come in and want to build an audience. That’s what

The sums paid for local and overseas rights by Chinese firms have ballooned by as much as ten-fold over the last few years. PPTV also took over the remainder of a 2-year rights deal to show Chinese Super League matches from sports media firm LeSports, which defaulted on payments due to debt problems at its parent company. It’s now also in talks to buy an up to 56 percent stake in China Sports Media (CSM) from majority shareholder China Media Capital (CMC), said a CSM official, who asked not to be named. CSM is the primary rights holder for Chinese and Asian soccer. CMC President Clark Xu confirmed the firm was in talks with Suning, and other parties, to sell some of its CSM stake. The chief executive of CSM, which is valued at around 5 billion yuan, acknowledged the ongoing talks. Suning and PPTV declined to comment

BUYER BEWARE

At a time when Beijing has been openly critical of “irrational” overseas investments, the stakes are high for buyers paying above the odds. A state television programme last week on firms making risky overseas acquisitions named Suning’s Inter Milan buy as an example. Its deals do stand out. PPTV’s $700 million deal for future EPL China rights was far above rival offers. Current rights holder Super Sports bid $400 million, a person at the firm said, reckoning anything above $500 million would mean a loss. Super Sports declined comment. And there’s no guarantee that winning exclusive rights means immediate profits. “Even if companies snatch exclusive content rights, in order to maintain influence and brand those companies will still have to repackage to TV stations at low prices or even for free,” Beijing Baofeng, the Chinese owner of Italian sports media rights group MP & Silva, said in a statement to Reuters. And in China, getting fans to watch more matches, and getting them to pay, are quite different. Challenges include rampant piracy and the late-day airing of many overseas games. Also, the introduction of strict rules on player transfers in China’s domestic league is hindering star signings - a key allure for paying fans. Ding Li, 21, a recent graduate in Beijing, said he only pays for occasional high-profile games and “when I really can’t find free or pirated” streams. Last year, he paid about 10 yuan ($1.48) to watch Manchester United vs Arsenal on Super Sports. “I’ve no plans to buy a subscription. I like flexibility and most games can be found on pirate stream websites,” Ding, who supports England’s Arsenal and Germany’s Borussia Dortmund, told Reuters. It’s a commonly shared attitude. Wuhan DDMC Culture Co Ltd, which acquired Super Sports this month in a $500 million deal, said in a filing that 80 percent of Super Sports’ user base paid for one-off games or single club “die-hard” membership - not full subscriptions. That means it can be a slow process to recoup the large price tags, even if Super Sports’ revenues are roughly doubling each year. A single match costs around 10 yuan, while a “die-hard” fan membership - giving access to one club’s games for the season - is 98 yuan. Full membership for an EPL season is 298 yuan ($44) - near what it costs for just a single month in Britain. Richard Young, Managing Director of NFL China, which promotes American football in the country, said real profits would come if platforms could dominate major sports, helping them bring in the fans and push up prices. “The dust hasn’t settled yet, but if there is consolidation it changes things massively,” he said. “If someone really does corner the market, then you’ll see that.”(rtr)

KRASNOYE — Russia is desperate to control its spending on the 2018 World Cup, and a farmer might just have the answer — straw. In a project straight out of the “Three Little Pigs” fairytale, Roman Ponomaryov has built a straw replica of the 43 billion ruble ($700 million) stadium in St. Petersburg which will host World Cup semifinals. His arena made of 4,500 straw bales comes with tiered seating for 300 and flagpoles. It hosted its first tournament — for local teams only — last weekend using modified soccer rules. “It’s good to get people excited and create a sports atmosphere ahead of the World Cup,” Ponomaryov said in a recent interview.
