Mark Wahlberg named world’s highest-paid actor in 2017 LOS ANGELES - Mark Wahlberg soared to the top of the world’s highest paid actors on an annual Forbes magazine list that highlighted a huge disparity between male and female Hollywood stars.

Wahlberg, 46, earned an estimated $68 million in 2017 thanks to his pay days for movies “Daddy’s Home 2” and “Transformers: The Last Knight”, according to the Forbes ranking released on Tuesday. Italy’s latest deadly quake exposes inaction on illegal homes

ROME - A small but deadly earthquake on the Italian holiday island of Ischia exposed a deep political fault line on Tuesday over the country’s proliferation of unsafe, illegal housing. The tremor, officially recorded in Italy at a modest strength of 4.0, toppled buildings, killed two people and injured dozens in a district where seven years ago residents rioted to prevent bulldozers from razing illegally built homes. “It’s ridiculous that people should die in an earthquake of this strength,” said Francesco Peduto, president of Italy’s national association of geologists. “In other advanced countries a quake like this would do no damage at all.” A fifth of new Italian houses were built illegally in 2015, according to the statistics bureau ISTAT, up from 9 percent in 2008. In four southern regions - including Sicily and Campania, where Ischia lies the proportion stood at well over a third two years ago. The legal status of the buildings that came down on Monday night was unclear. But the deaths reopened a debate over the problem

of builders sidestepping regulations, including those designed to ensure homes can resist earthquakes. “Ischia has always been a symbol of illegal building, random cementification and impunity,” Italy’s environmentalist lobby Legambiente said in a statement after the earthquake. It struck three days before the first anniversary of a much bigger, 6.2 magnitude quake that killed nearly 300 people in central Italy, most of them in the town of Amatrice. The government and political parties say they want to tackle the problem, but they have been reluctant to match words with deeds, especially in the run-up to local

elections in Sicily in November and a national vote early next year. Many houses, especially in the poor south, have been built illegally to save money and time by avoiding taxes and red tape, and their owners resist attempts to enforce the law. Angelo Cambiano, former mayor of the small Sicilian town of Licata, paid a high price for tackling the problem. He first received anonymous threats and was finally forced from office by his own councillors this month after demolishing 67 illegal dwellings, mostly holiday homes on the coast, since he took office in 2015. Cambiano’s approach was unusual. Governments of all

political stripes have preferred to serve up regular amnesties for illegal construction work, allowing culprits to regularise their position with the payment of a modest fine while allowing the structures to stand. The anti-establishment 5-Star Movement, favourite to win Sicily’s regional election, came under fire this month when its candidate argued that inadequate housing policies had obliged many Sicilians to build illegally. His words were widely seen as justification for illegal and shoddy construction. Five-Star, whose battle cries are legality and sustainable development, was attacked for burying its principles in a bid for power. Its most prominent member of parliament, Luigi Di Maio, clarified that “all houses served with a demolition order have to come down”.

TRAGIC PRECEDENT Ischia, off the southern port city of Naples, is no stranger to earthquakes. A larger tremor in 1883 killed more than 2,000 people on the island. Yet little has been done to make its houses safer now than they were then. Seven years ago hundreds of its residents built barricades and threw bottles to stop bulldozers reaching the first of 600 illegally built houses due to be demolished. Organic farming at Panglan draws the interest of tourists

Customary villages prepare regulation on narcotics

MANGUPURA - Efforts to prevent off the hazards of narcotics have started to be included in awig-awig or customary village regulations. A number of customary villages in the district of Badung have discussed including rules regarding the use of narcotics in the perarem or appendix to customary village rules.

Head of the Badung Culture Agency, I.B. Anom Bhasma, when contacted on Tuesday (Aug. 22) confirmed that customary villages form across Badung have been having such discussions involving related institutions such as police authorities and the district national narcotics agency (BNNK), Badung. “In Badung, there are 122 customary villages with 546 customary hamlets that have been instructed to prepare their rules about narcotics”, he said. According to Bhasma, the eradication of drugs to be set forth in the perarem comes from a proposal from the customary village leaders’ meeting in Badung. This effort is in line with the desire of the BNNP Bali to establish a perarem on narcotics. “Currently, for the customary villages improving their awig-awig, the matter of narcotics is no longer set forth as perarem, but has been directly incorporated into their awigawig”, he said. He admitted that narcotics have become a serious problem in Indonesia. These illicit goods are very

hazardous, especially for the young generation. Bali has even been declared to be facing a drug emergency. “Customary villages that are now repairing their awigawig, will be them directly inserted, while if they have completed theirs, at least it is set forth in their perarem,” he said. With the perarem on narcotics, said Anom Bhasma, customary villages not only handle religious aspects of society (parhyangan), but also social aspect (pawongan) especially in the effort to eradicate the hazards of narcotics. In a separate location, headman of Petang, Wayan Suryantara, admitted that his village has prepared a perarem on narcotics. Moreover, his village government plans to make special village rules on narcotics including HIV-AIDS that will be used as a legal instrument for drug prevention. “We are still waiting for the regional regulation on the prevention of narcotics prepared by the province. After receiving, it will be adjusted in the village rules”, he said. Suyantara also said that BNNK Badung can hold a series of competitions such as quizes related to narcotics and HIV-AIDS. “We are also planning to make a special village rule for narcotic and HIV-AIDS mitigation”, he said. He mentioned that his agency will allocate a budget every year for the program in the village budget plan (APBDes) of Petang and added that this should be implemented on a regular basis. (kmb27)

With all of its advantages, organic farming is now being intensively developed by farmers of Subak Kana at Panglan hamlet, Pejeng, Tampaksiring. Hamlet chief of Panglan, I Made Kamardiyana, said on Tuesday (Aug. 22) that organic farming at Subak Kana shows positive progress. Two centers for organic farming in this subak area namely the Kebun Mai Organic ??Bali (KMOB) and Kebun Setaman Pejeng (KSP) have been visited by tourists. On Monday (Aug. 21) for example, the farmers group of Subak Kana was visited by dozens of students and tutors from Turkey. They came to see the community and agricultural processes at Subak Kana first hand.. The tourists first gathered at Panglan hall and then walked to mangosteen-themed garden where they were given a welcome drink by KMOB. “Afterward, they were divided into four small groups and directed to the coconut, papaya and chili gardens. For those who like their coffee sweetened, having it without sugar is easier said than done.

Mindful coffee consumption may help reduce sugar intake

MINNEAPOLIS - People who’d like to reduce their daily calories without restrictive dieting should consider taking their coffee with little or no sugar - and savoring the beverage might help in that regard, researchers suggest.

“There are 48 calories in one tablespoon of sugar, and over the course of a day, some coffee drinkers may use their entire recommended daily allotment of added sugar (100 calories for women/150 for men) just in their coffee,” they write in the Journal of Health Psychology, online August 10. But for those who like their coffee sweetened, having it without sugar is easier said than done. In a new study, Richie Lenne and Traci Mann of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis tested two interventions to help coffee drinkers reduce their sugar consumption. They randomly assigned 127 participants to follow one of three approaches for two weeks. In one group, people gradually decreased the amount of sugar they were adding to their coffee, by a little bit per day. Another group had a lesson in how to drink coffee mindfully, by taking time to focus on the coffee and appreciate it with the senses; the lesson included a coffee tasting introduction, so participants could learn to detect the flavor, acidity, sweetness, mouth-feel and aftertaste of coffee. The third group went cold-turkey, giving up sweeteners in coffee for two weeks without any strategy. The researchers had expected that the gradualdecrease approach would be most effective, but they were wrong. “Participants in all conditions had significant increases in consumption of sugar-free coffee that lasted six months, (but) the mindfulness group had a larger increase than the others,” the authors found. In fact, a month after the experiment, the mindfulness group drank coffee without sugar more often than those who simply tried to stop, which continued

through the six-month follow-up. On the other hand, the gradual reduction method was the least effective. “Initiating change is relatively easy, but maintaining that change is nearly impossible,” Lenne told Reuters Health by email. “We fully expected most of our participants would revert back to sugar-laden coffee, yet the mindfulness group persisted in drinking coffee sugar-free.” Both the mindfulness group and sudden-stop group developed an enjoyment for sugar-free coffee, but neither group enjoyed it more than the other. The gradual reduction group, however, enjoyed sugar-free coffee less than the group that gave up sweeteners cold-turkey. In the end, the mindfulness group had the strongest intentions about reducing sugar in coffee long-term. “I’m surprised the gradual reduction led to a decrease in liking for sugar-free coffee and was less effective than mindfulness,” said Ruopeng An of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. An, who wasn’t involved with this study, researches beverage consumption in relation to weight gain. “The mindfulness intervention is interesting, and I would encourage more research in this area,” he told Reuters Health by email. An also recommends the “Rethink Your Drink” campaign by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which recommends using fat-free or lowfat milk, ordering the smallest size available, skipping whipped cream, and not adding extra flavoring such as sugary vanilla or hazelnut. “Get back to the basics,” An said. “Order a plain cup of coffee with fat-free milk and artificial sweetener, or drink it black.” “Helping people reduce their sugar intake is an important goal for promoting health,” Lenne said. “Reducing sugar in coffee is a healthy change that is feasible and can be sustained without sacrificing the pleasure of one’s daily cup.” (rtr)

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong mentioned the drinks makers’ agreement in a speech on Sunday, in which he also urged people to drink water, eat wholemeal bread and brown rice, but did provide details. SINGAPORE - Seven major drinks companies including CocaCola and PepsiCo will limit the sugar content of drinks they sell in Singapore, as part of the city-state’s campaign to fight diabetes. Singapore is one of the first countries in Asia to target sugary drinks, bringing it in line with many Western nations that have sought to mitigate the health risks associated with sugar through measures such as taxes and warning labels. Globally, beverage firms have been reworking recipes, racing to cut sugar and introduced more options to cater to increasingly health-conscious consumers. On Tuesday, Singapore’s ministry of health said the seven firms had signed an industry pledge to remove by 2020 drinks that contain more than 12 percent sugar from their portfolios of sugar-sweetened beverages. World Frangipani Park struck with drought MANGUPURA - Frangipani trees located in World Frangipani Park are suffering from lack of water. A number of trees have started to wither. Many of the chairs located in the Badung civic center are also damaged. Head of the Badung Environment and Sanitation Agency (LHK), Putu Eka Merthawan, denied such conditions on Tuesday (Aug. 22), claiming that maintenance of the World Frangipani Park has been optimal. “August, September and October are the autumn months so its normal that the leaves wither as they prepare to bloom”, he said. According to Merthawan, the LHK does regular maintenance of the World Frangipani Park where there are currently 25 species of frangipani from all five continents. “They flower between December

and March” he added. His agency is going to equip the empty areas of the park with rides for children. Facilities for promenades will also be provided. “We aim to have these installed this year with the assistance of CSR”, he said. In response to the iron gates for bicycle parking and the collapse of the signboard that has yet to be replaced, Merthawan asserted that these will be replaced and repaired. Since the World Frangipani Park was first established in 2012, it has yet to have any repairs done, giving the park a dilapidated appearance.. AMLAPURA - The government of Karangasem’s hope that Tanah Ampo harbor can be completed seems to be turning into a reality as the construction of a breakwater has started and soon a jetty ramp for lifeboats to berth will also be made.

Construction of the breakwater at Tanah Ampo is being handled directly by the central government through the harbormaster and port authority (KSOP) of Padangbai. Information regarding the construction of Tanah Ampo harbour was disseminated on Monday (Aug 21) with representatives of the government of Karangasem and district leadership council as well as villagers form Ulakan and Tanah Ampo attending. The breakwater will be installed lengthwise along 100 meters to the west starting from the middle of the pier. The Tanah Ampo pier itself spreads long 154 meters. It was revealed that the project is fully funded by central government with an budget of around IDR 50 billion being allocated for the first phase of the project which only involves the construction of the breakwater. SEMARAPURA - A deadly collision involving a minivan and a motorcycle occurred at the intersection of Kusamba and Jalan Bypass Ida Bagus Mantra, Dawan subdistrict, on Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 22). The tragedy caused severe head injuries to the victim. The collision involved a minivan with license plate of DK 1434 OS driven by I Gede Iwan Oktav Laksana, 35, a resident of Delod Peken hamlet, Kendran, Singaraja, and a Vixion motorcycle with license plate of DK 5990 BG ridden by I Gede Suantara, 21, from Subagan hamlet, Sengkidu, Manggis, Karangasem. The incident took place around 14:15 when the traffic lights the intersection were not working.

Laksana was driving his minivan from the south while Suantara came rushing from the east. The two vehicles collided and Laksana who was wearing a non-standardized helmet was sent flying into the air. Hitting the asphalt caused a severe head injury and broken femur and instant death. The severity of the injuries and the blood that flowed onto the road startled other road users. Suastika only suffered a few scratches but both drivers were rushed to Klungkung hospital. Chief of Klungkung Police Traffic Affairs, Taufik Rizaldi confirmed the incident saying: “our Zebra Unit has investigated the scene of the crime and evidence has been secured”. (kmb45)

Under U.S. law, the administration is required to withhold 15 percent, or $195 million, of the $1.3 billion it gives Egypt annually in FMF funds unless it can certify that Cairo is making progress on advancing human rights and democracy. However, the administration can issue a national security waiver that allows the funds to go through. This year, the administration again decided it could not certify Egyptian progress on rights and it chose to issue the national security waiver but it is still going to withhold the $195 million. That money will now go into an account where it will be held pending Egyptian improvement on human rights and democracy. This means that Egypt could eventually get the money if its record on democracy and civil liberties improved. “Strengthened security cooperation with Egypt is important to U.S. national security,” said one source, adding that U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson felt “it was in the interests of the U.S. to exercise the waiver.” “We remain concerned about Egypt’s lack of progress in key areas, including human rights and the new NGO law,” the source said. Egyptian rights activists have said they face the worst crackdown in their history under Sisi, accusing him of erasing freedoms won in the 2011 Arab Spring uprising that ended Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year rule. BERLIN - The mood among German investors fell for the third month running in August, a survey showed on Tuesday, linking the drop to an emissions scandal engulfing the country’s car industry. MADRID - An Islamist militant cell that last week used a van to kill 13 people in Barcelona had planned one or several major bomb attacks, possibly against churches or monuments, one suspect told a court on Tuesday, according to sources close to the investigation.

Abouyaaqoub, whom they had identified as the driver of the van that careered along the packed Las Ramblas promenade in Barcelona last Thursday, killing 13 people and injuring 120 others from 34 countries. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the van attack and a separate deadly assault, hours later, in the coastal resort of Cambrils, south of Barcelona. In Cambrils, a car rammed passersby before its occupants got out and tried to stab people. The five assailants, who were wearing what turned out to be fake explosive belts, were all shot dead by police, while a Spanish woman died in the attack. Police say the imam suspected of leading the militant cell, Abdelbaki Es Satty, died a day before the Barcelona attack when a house the group was using to build bombs blew up. According to Judge Andreu’s court order, in the ruins of the house in Alcanar, southwest of Barcelona, police found several plane tickets to Brussels in Es Satty’s name issued by the Spanish airline Vueling. Also found, it said, was a note in Arabic entitled: “Short letter from the soldiers of Islamic State in the land of al-Andalus for the crusaders, the hateful, the sinners, the unjust, the corruptors.” Al-Andalus was the Islamic name for Spain during the Middle Ages when much of it was Muslimcontrolled. Row over haj pilgrimage helps fuel Qatar rift

DOHA - A row over access for Qataris to Islam’s annual haj pilgrimage is further poisoning relations between their country and Saudi Arabia and aggravating a wider diplomatic rift with other Arab powers. Qatar has accused Saudi Arabia, which hosts and supervises the haj, of deliberately making it hard for its pilgrims to obtain permits to go to Mecca. Saudi Arabia says Qatar is seeking to politicise the ritual for diplomatic gains. A deal last week to let some Qataris cross the desert border into Saudi Arabia appeared initially to signal an easing of tensions, but subsequently led to even more acrimonious exchanges. Many would-be Qatari pilgrims say they will not travel to the haj out of safety concerns, or because they fear becoming pawns in the political struggle. “We are tired of this. Of course we want to go to Mecca but who should we listen to? Politics has broken down,” said Ahmed al-Rumahi, 31, a student of Islamic studies at Qatar University. For Saudi Arabia, custodian of Islam’s holiest places, much is at stake. The kingdom ventures its reputation on organising haj, a pillar of Islam which every able-bodied Muslim who can afford to is obliged to undertake at least once. Qatari officials say that only a handful of Qataris are expected to attend this year’s event, which runs from about Aug. 30 to Sept. 4, depending on sightings of the moon. The haj dispute has added a new point of contention to the wider diplomatic standoff in the Gulf. In June, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) imposed sanctions on fellow U.S. ally Qatar and cut all transport links with the country, accusing it of supporting Iran and backing Islamist terrorism charges Doha denies. The dispute has defied mediation attempts by the United States and Kuwait.

‘HATRED ON BOTH SIDES’

After last week’s border crossing deal, which Riyadh said was brokered by a member of Qatar’s ruling family, Saudi television showed dozens of Qataris driving across the frontier in white SUVs. It then emerged that the dealmaker was Abdullah bin Ali al-Thani, a descendant of Qatar’s founder, who was welcomed in Riyadh by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and then by a holidaying King Salman in Morocco. Qatari officials expressed suspicion at his role and the praise lavished on him by Saudi media, saying the sheikh, a businessman who lives overseas, was on a personal visit and did not hold a position in the government. “The Saudis put him on a pedestal and we see this as an attempt to undermine our royal family,” said a Qatari diplomat. The boycotting countries deny seeking regime change in Doha, and Sheikh Abdullah denied acting out of personal interest. Saudi officials say over 400 Qatari pilgrims have arrived through the land border, but Qatari media said most were Qataris crossing to tend farms they own in the kingdom. Up to 1,200 Qataris are eligible for the haj under an annual quota system. Qatar has also criticised a Saudi offer to fly Qataris to the haj on Saudi Arabia Airlines, rather than allowing Qatari or other carriers to take them to Mecca. The diplomatic rift has hurt businesses and separated families across the Gulf, and some conservative Qataris are angry that the infighting is preventing them from fulfilling religious duties. Some Qataris fret about their safety in the kingdom, a concern Saudi authorities say has no justification. “There is hatred on both sides now, so yeah, I wouldn’t feel comfortable showing my passport in hotels or other places in Saudi,” said Mohammed, a civil engineer who declined to give his second name. Government wants KPK to be reinforced: Kalla JAKARTA - Vice President Jusuf Kalla stated that the government wanted the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to be strengthened. The vice president made the remarks in response to the tentative conclusion of the House of Representatives (DPRs) KPK Special Inquiry Committee that aims to revise the law on KPK. Kalla stated in his office in Jakarta on Tuesday that if there was a move to revise Law No. 30 of 2002 on the Corruption Eradication Commission, it should aims to strengthen the role of the anti-graft agency. “The government wants a strong KPK. If there is a revision, it should strengthen the KPK,” Kalla noted. Kalla remarked that the government does not want any weakening of the KPK, because the presence of the institution was still needed to eliminate or reduce corruption practices in Indonesia. “We still need the KPK to eliminate or reduce the rate of corruption in Indonesia,” Kalla added. The Houses KPK Inquiry Committee has submitted a tentative conclu-

sion regarding the implementation of KPKs duties and authorities. There are 11 problems obtained from a number of reports, aspirations, examination of witnesses, recorded interviews, and others. The DPRs KPK Inquiry Committee judged that from the institutional aspect, the KPK moves to position itself as a super body that is not willing to be criticized and supervised and uses media opinion to suppress its critics. In addition, the KPK, with independent arguments that lead to freedom from state power branches, has the potential to abuse power and should strictly and effectively be supervised by the DPR. Another point that is being spotlighted (by the DPR) is that the KPK is deemed not to comply with the principles of legal certainty, openness, and accountability in carrying out its duties and functions, as regulated in Article 5 of the Corruption Eradication Commission Law. “If there is deliberation of the law in the House, then the government will respond and send ministers to discuss it together,” Kalla pointed out. MILAN, Aug 22 (Reuters) Kimi Raikkonen will be racing for Ferrari again next season after the Italian Formula One team announced on Tuesday a contract extension with the Finn for 2018. The popular 2007 world champion, who will be 38 in October, would have been out of contract at the end of this year with plenty of rivals eyeing up his seat at the sport’s most successful and glamorous team. Raikkonen has not won a race since he was at Lotus in 2013, and is currently fifth in a championship led by German team mate Sebastian Vettel, who has won four of the season’s 11 races to date. Vettel is also out of contract at the end of the season and the short Ferrari statement did not mention him. However, he is expected to remain once a longer and more

lucrative deal has been hammered out. The timing of Ferrari’s statement was earlier than expected, since the team have often made such announcements at their home Italian round at Monza which follows on from this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix. They had also been tipped to confirm both drivers at the same time. Vettel, a four times world champion with Red Bull, has also been linked in some media speculation to champions Mercedes where Finland’s Valtteri Bottas has yet to be confirmed for 2018. By opting to keep Raikkonen, Ferrari have gone for an experienced driver who is still quick and who will not rock the boat in what is likely to be his final season. He first raced for Ferrari between 2007-9 and then returned

in 2014. He and Vettel get on well, with the German keen on him staying, and Raikkonen has shown his loyalty this season by accepting team orders to his detriment. The Finn has twice finished second behind Vettel, in Monaco and Hungary, while also taking third place in Britain and Russia. He started on pole position in Monaco in May, his first appearance at the front of the grid since June 2008, and has a strong track record at Belgium’s SpaFrancorchamps where he was won four times. His future was called into question in July, however, when Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne called him “a bit of a laggard”. “I think Kimi has got to show a higher level of commitment to the process,” he had told reporters at the Austrian Grand Prix. ZURICH - Napoli cruised into the Champions League group stage with a 2-0 win away to Nice on Tuesday, scoring their first goal as the Ligue 1 side’s striker Mario Balotelli was arguing with match officials on the touchline. Jose Callejon took advantage of Napoli’s numerical advantage in the 48th minute of the playoff round second leg tie, handing them an away goal which, added to their 2-0 win from the first leg, effectively ended Nice’s challenge as it left the French side needing to score four goals. The row appeared to centre around a white bandage on his wrist which French media said was covering up a bracelet -- banned under the laws of the game. far post, scored easily. Nice coach Lucien Favre reacted furiously to the goal while Balotelli continued his discussion with officials. Insigne wrapped things up in the 89th minute, collecting Faouzi Ghoulam’s pass and firing into the corner. “I don’t want to comment on Balotelli,” said Favre. “It wasn’t very satisfactory, it was not good enough.” Favre also complained that Balotelli was too slow in leaving the field when he was substituted. BARCELONA - Barcelona are suing Neymar for 8.5 million euros ($10.00 million) for breach of contract as they want him to return the bonus he was paid when he signed a new five-year deal just nine months before joining Paris St Germain, the Spanish club said on Tuesday. The Catalans are asking for an additional 10 percent payment due to a delay in their demands being met. “Barcelona have taken these actions in defence of their interests, after Neymar’s contract was rescinded just a few months after he signed on until 2021,” a club statement said. Brazilian striker Neymar, who joined PSG earlier this month after the French club triggered his 222 million euros release clause, said he was surprised by the decision but warned he was not going to give in. “It is noteworthy that this news was received with surprise, since the athlete completely fulfilled the contract then in force, with the full deposit of the amounts set out in the buy-out clause freely agreed with F.C. Barcelona for his release,” Neymar’s representatives said in a statement. The statement added that the 25-year-old forward’s lawyers were preparing a formal defence to the demands. PSG activated Neymar’s release clause as Barcelona were unwilling to negotiate the sale of one of their best players. Barcelona have passed the complaint to the Spanish football federation (RFEF) after first filing the lawsuit in court, as well as demanding PSG subsidise it, should Neymar not be able to take responsibility for it. PSG brushed off that suggestion and said they had done all that was required of them. “Paris Saint-Germain reiterates that, like Neymar Jr., it has always respected all applicable laws and rules in its dealings and, once again, regrets the attitude of FC Barcelona,” the club said in a statement. In the days after he signed for the French club, Barcelona refused to pay the reported 26 million euro instalment of the loyalty bonus which he was due to receive this summer, citing breach of contract. On Sunday, Neymar criticised the Barcelona board after helping PSG beat Toulouse in Ligue 1. “I am disappointed with them (Barcelona directors). MELBOURNE - Socceroos captain Mile Jedinak will miss the last two World Cup qualifiers against Japan and Thailand in a blow for Australia’s hopes of booking their tickets to the finals in Russia next year. The Aston Villa midfielder, who has been battling a groin injury since April, ruled himself out of contention for next Thursday’s crunch match in Japan and the home match against the Thais in Melbourne on Sept. 5. “We wanted to give him every chance. He was very keen to be a part of it but speaking to him last night, he’s probably not going to get in that game that he needs to see how he feels,” coach Ange Postecoglou said after naming the 23-man squad on Wednesday. “Obviously with it being a fairly long trip and with his long absence from gametime, probably he felt he wasn’t right and from that perspective, ruled himself out.” Even though Jedinak has been the rock at the heart of Australia’s midfield for the last few years, Postecoglou was confident he had enough options in his squad to fill the void.
