LOS ANGELES - Without a superhero movie or new studio sequel in play, this weekend provided an opening for two smaller films to shine. But as the weekend draws to a close, one is beaming brighter than the other.
That title goes to Lionsgate’s R-rated action comedy “Hitman’s Bodyguard,” which is firing off to $21.6 million during its opening weekend at 3,377 locations. That’s a solid opening, especially during a painful summer for the movie business and sleepy month of August. The final tally was fueled by an aggressive marketing push, and a trio of stars at the center -- Samuel L. Jackson as a notorious hitman, and Salma Hayek as hit equally threatening wife, and Ryan Reynolds as a bodyguard. The film comes courtesy of director Patrick Hughes (“The Expendables 3”) and writer Tom O’Connor. “’The Hitman’s Bodyguard’ is generating great word of mouth among moviegoers,” said Lionsgate’s distribution president David Spitz. “It has a clear runway in the weeks ahead, and we expect it to play well right into September.” Meanwhile, “Logan Lucky” -- a critical darling from Steven Soderbergh and Bleecker Street -- is sputtering. The heist comedy, which relied on an unconventional production and marketing strategy, looks to make $8.1 million this weekend from 3,031 theaters. The film was partially funded through foreign pre-sales and partnering with Amazon for streaming rights. The story -- penned by Rebecca Blunt, who likely doesn’t exist -- centers on a trio of siblings played by Channing
Tatum, Riley Keough, and Adam Driver, who attempt to pull off a massive robbery. It’s set at the Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR race. Of the two, “Logan Lucky” fared better with critics, earning a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, as opposed to “Hitman’s Bodyguard,” which has a 39%. But the roles are reversed when it comes to audience reception -- “Hitman’s Bodyguard” has a B+ CinemaScore as opposed to “Logan Lucky’s” B. In the end, “Logan Lucky” will end up in third for the weekend behind the second frame of “Annabelle: Creation.” The latest in the “Conjuring” universe from Warner Bros. is targeting $15.5 million from 3,542 locations. And “Dunkirk” will land in fourth behind “Logan Lucky” with an estimated $6.7 million. The same studio has more cause to celebrate as “Wonder Woman” crosses $800 million worldwide. “Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature” rounds out the top five this weekend with $5.1 million. Outside of the wide releases, TWC continues its gradual rollout for Taylor Sheridan’s “Wind River.” This weekend it looks to gross $3 million from 694 locations, raising its total cume past $4.1 million. And major acquisition at Sundance, “Patti Cake$” is struggling to find an audience with $66,000 from 14 locations. Overall, the summer of hell continues: This season’s box office has slipped to 13.3% behind last year at this point, according to data from ComScore, which also reports the 2017 box office is now pacing 5% behind 2016. WASHINGTON - Dick Gregory, a comedian who lambasted racism and played a prominent role in the 1960s civil rights movement after becoming one of the first black comics to perform for white audiences, died on Saturday at age 84, his son said. “It is with enormous sadness that the Gregory family confirms that their father, comedic legend and civil rights activist Mr. Dick Gregory departed this earth tonight in Washington, D.C.,” his son, Christian, wrote on Instagram. Gregory, who lived in Washington, died of heart failure in Sibley Memorial Hospital, where he had checked in a week ago after falling ill, said his longtime publicist Steve Jaffe. Gregory’s success as a comedian in the early 1960s helped pave the way for other black comics, such as Richard Pryor, to gain greater fame by reaching a mainstream
audience. Born in St. Louis, Gregory grew up in poverty. He was working for the U.S. Postal Service and performing in front of largely black audiences for low pay when Playboy founder Hugh Hefner saw his act and hired the comedian to perform at his nightclub in 1961. At the time, stand-up comedy was largely segregated. “When I started, a black comic couldn’t work a white nightclub,” Gregory told the Florida TimesUnion. “You could sing, you could dance, but you couldn’t stand flatfooted and talk - then the system would know how brilliant black folks was.” Soon after his break at the Playboy Club, Gregory recorded a number of comedy albums and appeared on television talk shows, becoming one of the highest paid black entertainers in the early 1960s. KUALA LUMPUR/JAKARTA - Malaysia apologised on Sunday for the upside-down printing of Indonesia’s flag in the souvenir guidebook for the Southeast Asia Games, which officials said is being withdrawn and reprinted. The mistake, spotted at the games’ opening in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, on Saturday, sparked an outcry in Indonesia and the hashtag #ShameonyouMalaysia was trending on social media. Indonesian President Joko Widodo told reporters in Jakarta the incident concerned “national pride”, and called for an apology. Within hours, Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman apologised to the government and people of Indonesia for the “inadvertent error”, saying that all measures have been taken “to address this unfortunate situation”. Earlier, Malaysia Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the mistake would be corrected and a new guidebook sent to the games’ officials and guests. “We apologise for affecting the image and reputation of the Republic of Indonesia, as the flag is a symbol of pride,” he said after meeting Indonesia’s delegation to the games. Indonesia’s flag has two horizontal bands with red on the top and white underneath. Turning it upside down makes it look like Poland’s flag. Indonesian Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi acknowl-
edged Khairy’s apology, and said he hoped the incident will not be repeated. Imam earlier expressed dismay, posting pictures of the mistake on his Twitter account after the games’ opening ceremony. “It was a good opening ceremony but spoiled by this fatal negligence that was very painful,” he said. The flag blunder was the latest in a series of embarrassing incidents at the regional sports meet. Last week, a bus driver ferrying the Myanmar women’s football team was arrested on suspicion of stealing a watch and for not possessing a driver’s license. BANGLI —The management of Penglipuran tourism village is going to build a number of new facilities to support the tourist attraction, including a bamboo museum. For construction of the museum, the customary village has prepared an area of ??0.74 acre. Operations Manager of Penglipuran tourism village, I Nengah Moneng, said on Sunday (Aug. 20) that the development plan of a number of supporting facilities for Penglipuran tourism village such as the bamboo museum, a traditional swimming pool and a playground area, have been discussed with chief of Penglipuran customary village. In the meeting, the chief asked to them to be patient as the plan is still in progress. “We have been asked to wait as the process has not been finalised” said Moneng. Moneng added that chief of Penglipuran customary village has met with member of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) of the RI, I Gusti Ngurah Arya Wedakarna, and bamboo expert from Udayana University, Mrs. Diah recently to discuss the plan to build a bamboo museum. As a result of the meeting, the chief of the customary village asked to prepare 0.74 acres of land for the construction of the tourist attraction’s supporting facilities. “The village authority has no problem with the land requested because the chief of the customary village has already prepared land for the constructin of the bamboo museum. The 0.74 acre of land is located east of the village square. In essence, we are just waiting”, said Nengah Moneng. He revealed that the village is still designing the traditional swimming pool. Originally, the location planned for that purpose was Sangsang River, but tlocal residents are using that part of the river for a watermill. “Land in the weat has been st aside for the playground’ he said. The addition of new facilities, he explained is meant to enhance the Penglipuran attraction so that visitors will not be bored. So far the only activity offered in this village is taking promenades through the village. The bamboo museum, tradiional swimming pool and playround will help visitors feel more comfortable and entertained. “The idea to build a playground came from visitors themselves so we are confident that it will be a popular addition, particularly with children who will no doubt be hapy to play here. Parents will also enjoy their visit to Penglipuran”, said Moneng. Penglipuran customary village chief, I Wayan Supat, emphasised that the plan for the bamboo museum, playgorund and swimming pool are still bein discussed. Construction of the bamboo museum has been followed up on but has yet to be finallized. “The village has already prepared the 0.74 hecatres of land and the funds for the construction will be provided by the central government. We are just waiting for the funds”, he added. Supat went on to say that the plan for the playground and swimming pool are still being discussed and that the source of funds for these two facilities has not been ascertained. “We have already looked into the details of the playground, however the traditional swimming pool of course needs a source of water, so this is still being explored” siad I Wayan Supat. After increase of levy for tourist destination
District govt asked to increase facilities
SEMARAPURA — The government of Klungkung’s plan to apply a levy for a single package of the city tour tour and the increase of admission ticket at Goa Lawah has not been made known to the Association of Indonesia Tour Travel Agency (ASITA) Bali. Nevertheless, this increased has not been questioned however the district government is being asked to make improvements to facilities and and the quality of services. After the revision of Regional Bylaw No.13/2013 on the levy of recreational and sports destinations, the city tour with destinations like Puputan Monument, Klungkung Grand Palace, Semarajaya Museum, Kerta Gosa and the art market is designed into single package. (Child) domestic tourist is increased to IDR 10,000 (child) and adults at IDR 15,000. In the meantime, for foreign tourist, the ticket admission becomes IDR 25,000 (child) and adult at IDR 50,000 (adult). In contrast to the previous price, child was charged at IDR 4,000 and adults IDR 6,000 collected at each object. Chairman of ASITA Bali, Ketut Ardana, said on Sunday (Aug. 20) that the revision of the levy should be submitted to tourism players, especially ASITA earlier, so that it can be submitted to the members as soon as possible. It is considered important to avoid miscommunication with tourists. “Actually, the change is not a problem. More importantly, there are communication and dis-
semination first if they have not got this information,” he said. The revision is expected to be followed by improvement of facilities at the object, such as toilet and so is the quality of service. “Most importantly, it is clean, the water runs and there is toilet. Environmental sanitation should be maintained, not to be disturbed by merchants (tourists—Ed). The tariff increase should also be accompanied with improvements having been done on the object concerned,” he said. In addition to city tours, the increase is also drafted for Goa Lawah Temple attraction. Previously, child was charged at IDR 4,000 and adult at IDR 6,000, while now it has been increased to IDR 6,000 and IDR 12,000 for adult (domestic). In the meantime, foreign tourist is charged at IDR 10,000 (child) and adults at IDR 15,000. This increase of admission ticket has not been known by chief of Goa Lawah Temple, Putu Juliadi, who is also a ticket attendant. However, it declared to
follow the policy. “If going up, we’ll just follow it. But tourists should be served with more things for tourists such as toilet. Now, there has been only one company having international standard. In essence, we hope to provide them with additional,” he said. Parking lot of the tourist object located at Pesinggahan village, Dawan, still has damages at some points. Likewise, location of merchants has not been well arranged. It is expected to get the attention from the government. “Cleaning service staff is not adequate. In essence, we hope the district government can give more attentions,” he said. Previously, the Head of the Klungkung Tourism Office, I Nengah Sukasta, confirmed that to poise the increase in levy, the district government still makes a breakthrough on the tourist object in an effort to improve the quality. “District government will continue to make improvement,” he said. SEMARAPURA — A number of beaches in the district of Klungkung were thronged by local residents carrying out the Banyupinaruh ritual on Sunday (Aug.20), related to the celebration of Saraswati Day that occurred the day before. Power companies view Monday’s event as a “test bed” on how power systems can manage a major change in supply, said John Moura, director of reliability assessment and system analysis at the North American Electric Reliability Corp. “It has been tested before, just not at this magnitude,” adds Steven Greenlee, a spokesman for the California Independent System Operator
(CISO), which controls routing power in the nation’s most populous state. CISO estimates that at the peak of the eclipse, the state’s normal solar output of about 8,800 MW will be reduced to 3,100 MW and then surge to more than 9,000 MW when the sun returns. CISO’s preparation includes studying how German utilities dealt with a 2015 eclipse in that country. Its review prompted the grid overseer to add an additional 200 MW to its normal 250 MW power reserves. “We’ve calculated that during the eclipse, that solar will ramp off at about 70 MW per minute,” said
Greenlee. “And then we’ll see the solar rolling back at about 90 MW per minute or more.” Power utilities say the focus will be on managing a rapid drop off and accommodate the solar surge post the eclipse. Utility executives say they do not expect any interruption in service, but are prepared to ask customers to pare usage if a problem arises.”We want to assure our customers that we have secured enough resources to meet their energy needs, even with significantly less solar generation on hand,” said Caroline Winn, chief operating officer at utility San Diego Gas & Electric Co. Japan launches satellite for advanced GPS operation
TOKYO - Japan on Saturday launched an H-2A rocket carrying a geo-positioning satellite into orbit after a week-long delay, the government said. The launch of Japan’s third geopositioning satellite is part of its plan to build a version of the U.S. global positioning system (GPS) to offer location information used for autopiloting and possible national security purposes. The government postponed the launch a week ago because of a technical glitch. “With the success of the third satellite, we have made another
step closer for having signals from four satellites in the future,” Masaji Matsuyama, minister in charge of space policy, said in a statement. The government plans to launch a fourth satellite by the end of the year to start offering highly precise position information by next April. Japan plans to boost the number of its geo-positioning satellites to seven by 2023, making its system independently operational even if the U.S. GPS becomes unavailable for some reason, a government official said previously. The satellite was manufactured

German tourist sentenced For success of non-cash toll payments Jasa Marga boosts installation of GTO lightly in murder case
DENPASAR — The Denpasar district court was criticised for the light sentence that was handed down for the murder of Steven Djingga. The defendant in this case was a foreigner from Germany named Giuliano Lemoine. Despite being found guilty of murder, the defendant was only sentenced to 2.5 years in prison. Other than the light indictment, the trial with prosecutor Dewa Arya Lanang Raharja wa also criticized for apparently being closed and being postponed twice. The trial for the indictment finally took place last Wednesday (Aug. 16). The panel of judges presiding over this case was Ester Oktavi. In the indictment, the prosecutor charged the defendant Lemoine under a single law, Article 351 paragraph (3) of
the Criminal Code, regarding persecution resulting in death. The prosecutor demanded a light sentence of 2.5 years for the defendant even though the penalty for murder is 7 years on prison. Inevitably, the attitudes of the prosecutors in handling the murder case involving a foreign defendant with a sentence of 2.5 years in prison raised some questions. Section Head of General Crime at the Denpasar Prosecutor’s Office, Ketut Maha Agung, when asked for his confirmation on Sunday (Aug. 20) did not want to give any explanation on the pretext that he did not know who the prosecutor was. “Who was the prosecutor”, of asked Agung. Lemoine from Germany was brought to court for the case of the murder of Steven Djingga. The incident occurred on Tuesday (Mar. 21, 2007) around 01:00 in front of Paddy’s Club on Jalan Legian, Kuta. Initially, the victim Steven Djingga and witness Wisno Toni visited Paddy’s Club. Upon arrival at the location, there was a fight between the victim and the defendant triggered by a mutual nudge. The victim and the defendant continued fighting outside Paddy’s Club. Being unsatisfied, the defendant Giuliano Lemoine approached the victim Steven Djingga and punched him. Steven Djingga fell down and hit the back of his head on the floor. His nose was bleeding and the victim died on Saturday March 25, 2017. (kmb37)
MANGUPURA — In order for the government’s non-cash program, to succeed, PT Jasa Marga (Persero) Tbk. Has sped up the installation of automatic toll booths (GTOs) on toll roads. Gradually, Jasa Marga will convert regular toll booths throghtout Indonesia (inclduing Bali) into GTOs. There aim is to have all of the GTOs installed by October 31, 2017. President Director of PT Jasa Marga (Persero) Tbk, Desi Arryani, when contacted recently revealed that the company is continuing to add GTO on the toll roads that it manages. Desi said the government will do its best to let the public know about the new program and then Jasa Marga will do everything gradually to ensure
the success of the non-cash program by converting all regular toll booths into GTOs. “Some of our booths will be full GTO but using GTO hybrid which means that they are equipped with a cross bar in safe locations. We know that sometimes if people are queuing up and the driver at the front of the line does not have a cash card, someone behind them may want to lend them their card . We want to avoid this type of thing. Gradually we will change the booths so that they only accept non-cash options”, she explained. So far very few toll booths accept non-cash payments with just 33 percent nationally and 15 percent in Bali. “This is a very low percentage and over the next few months cash
less payments will be applied on all toll roads. Well this should be studied”, she added. Desi added the number of GTO has reached 40 percent or 466 units of the total number reaching 1.002 units in all toll roads. As targeted, at the end October 2017, the GTO installation throughout Indonesia has reached 100 percent. “We also have to direct the sales of electronic money cards at the booths and so on,” she added. Transition of regular booths to GTO is still running until now. She hoped until the end of September 2017 the transition process has reached 60 percent. “While monitoring the development of non-cash user community, we gradually attempt to reach 100 percent (GTO transition),” he concluded. Fish famine, fishermen of Pesinggahan switch profession SEMARAPURA — Fishermen on Pesinggahan Beach, Dawan, have been frustrated for the last three months because of the fish famine. A few fishermen have been forced to switch to professions with more promising incomes. One local fisherman 55 year old Wayan Kapit, said that the livelihood of fishermen seems uncertain lately. This profession seems to be unable to give of earning a living. This condition has been exacerbated by the fish famine of the last three months. Catch very few fish” he said while moving his boat on Sunday (Aug. 20). Fishermen usually head out ot sea at between 04:00 and 08:00. Last Sunday, during this time frame, he only caught two fish that he sold for IDR 20,000. This does not even cover operating costs that come to about IDR 50,000. “When compared to the operating cost, the money we make is no where near enough. We don’t just suffer losses, we are harming our selves. Some days, we do make some profits but it is commonplace

In the meantime, a 50 year old fishmonger named Ni Komang Sariani said that amid the fish famine, there is a large demand for fish, especially on holidays like “ Many people are looking for fish, but the catches are very small” she said. Money laundering probe exposes Australian banks’ compliance frailties
HONG KONG - A money laundering probe at Commonwealth Bank of Australia is the latest in a slew of scandals denting the reputation of Australian banks as simple, reliable lenders at the forefront in the battle against financial crime. Australian banks have lagged their global peers in both their spending and their approach on anti-money laundering and knowyour-customer systems as they pursued rapid growth in customer deposits, some banking officials and experts say. “In the last few years, regulators and banks have been focused on changing the whole bank culture to get all levels of staff taking compliance seriously,” said Philippa Allen, CEO of ComplianceAsia, which advices on compliance issues. “That is not as widespread yet in Australia,” she said. “Australian banks have not had the big fines imposed on them like their global peers have.” Know-your-customer (KYC) and anti-money laundering (AML) processes became a key focus globally after HSBC Group and Standard Chartered were hit with hefty fines in 2012.
Major international banks are now spending between $900 million and $1.3 billion a year on financial crime compliance, according to analysis by corporate governance recruitment firm Barclay Simpson. HSBC spent $1.6 billion on regulatory and compliance programmes in the first half of 2017, up 12 percent from a year ago. In comparison, CBA’s spending on risk and compliance fell 7 percent to A$470 million ($371 million) in the year to June, according to the bank’s annual report. CBA said the drop was a result of the “timing and completion of key phases of risk and compliance projects” in the prior year including roll-out of refreshed teller machines. The bank said it has hired more than 50 compliance professionals since 2015 and is strengthening its customer background check processes while upgrading technology used to monitor accounts and transactions for suspicious activity. The guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain collided with merchant vessel Alnic MC to the east of Singapore, while heading to the city-state for a routine port call. Ten U.S. sailors are missing and five were injured in the collision, which resulted in significant damage to the hull of the U.S. vessel and the flooding of some of its compartments. Singapore and Malaysia both said the incident took place in their territorial waters, as the warship and oil tanker collided near the rocky outcrop of Pedra Branca, an area that has long been contested by both countries. Both countries said they were leading the search and rescue operation for the missing sailors. Singapore was once part of Malaysia but they separated acrimoniously in 1965, clouding diplomatic and economic dealings for years. The International Court of Justice ruled in 2008 that Pedra Branca, which means “white rock” in Portuguese, belonged to Singapore and a nearby feature called Middle Rocks belonged to Malaysia. Malaysia sought a review of the ruling this year, reopening the dispute. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore
(MPA) said it was notified just before dawn of the collision in “Singapore territorial waters” in the Singapore Strait, and Singapore was leading the search and rescue operations. Malaysia insisted that the incident happened in its waters, just miles off its southern state of Johor. Malaysia’s navy chief, Admiral Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin, told Reuters the KD Handalan was the first to respond to the distress call from the U.S. ship. “KD Handalan was just three miles from the USS McCain when it first received the distress call,” he said. Malaysia’s Maritime Enforcement Agency Director General Zulkifili Abu Bakar told reporters Malaysia disputed Singapore’s assertion that the accident happened in its waters. He said the Malaysian search and rescue operation was independent of Singapore’s and Malaysia had not communicated with its neighbour about the incident. “What is important is, we do not want to have another collision between assets on the ground,” Zulkifili said. “For the time being, we shouldn’t be arguing about whose waters it is, the most important thing is to focus on search and rescue.” The Malaysian navy assigned four vessels and a Super Lynx helicopter for the search and rescue, while the Malaysian armed forces and maritime authorities also deployed more assets. BUSINESS Initial NAFTA talks conclude amid signs schedule could slip
WASHINGTON - The United States, Canada and Mexico wrapped up their first round of talks on Sunday to revamp the NAFTA trade pact, vowing to keep up a blistering pace of negotiations that some involved in the process said may be too fast to bridge deep differences. In a joint statement issued at the end of five days of negotiations in Washington, the top trade officials from the three countries said Mexico would host the next round of talks from Sept. 1 to 5.

The three countries are trying to complete a full modernization of the 23-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement by early 2018, before Mexico’s national election campaign starts. U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to scrap NAFTA without major changes to reduce U.S. goods trade deficits with its North American neighbors, describing it as a “disaster” that drained hundreds of thousands of American manufacturing jobs to low-wage Mexico. The joint statement said the three countries made “detailed conceptual presentations” across the scope of NAFTA issues and began work to negotiate some of the agreement’s texts, although it did not provide details on the topics. Negotiating teams “agreed to provide additional text, comments or alternate proposals during the next two weeks,” ahead of the Mexico round.
SPEED VS SUBSTANCE
A second person participating directly in the talks but not authorized to speak about them said negotiating teams were instructed to “work and work fast,” but added that the substance of the agreement would not be sacrificed for speed. Trade experts have consistently said that the schedule is far too ambitious, given the amount of work and differences on key issues. “It’s hard to imagine how they can do something very substantive and do it very quickly. It’s almost as if you can have one or the other. You can have it quick, or you can have it meaningful,” said John Masswohl, director of government relations at the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association. Lebanese president signs public sector pay rise and tax hike laws
BEIRUT - Lebanese President Michel Aoun signed off on public sector wage increases and related tax hikes on Monday, the national news agency NNA said. Aoun had held off ratifying the two laws since parliament approved them last month, amid concerns from businesses about the impact of more taxes on Lebanon’s fragile economy.
The public sector pay scale law has been under discussion for years. The government had estimated that it would cost around $800 million, or $1.2 billion if it included certain pension increases. The tax law raises value-added tax (VAT) by one percentage point to 11 percent and hikes corporation tax to 17 percent
from 15 percent. Several protests have broken out this year over the proposed tax hikes, which are intended to fund public sector pay rises. In recent weeks, some public sector workers have also gathered in the streets calling for Aoun to finally sign the laws. (rtr)

This tradition is also aimed at maintaining balance of nature and humans to result in harmony in the implementation of the catur bratha penyepian or five abstinences. This lukat gni tradition begins with a joint worship at temples or family temple to invoke safety and smoothness for the implementation of lukat gni. Dozens of youths that take part in this activity are then heading for the catus pata or central intersection of the village to carry out the tradition. Here, the participants further slammed the fire of tied danyuh (dried coconut leaves) onto each opponent. No injuries are seen despite being hit by fire. Moreover, there is no resentment among the participants. The atmosphere is
getting festive with the accompaniment of baleganjur orchestra. Spiritual figure of Satria Kawan Palace, Mangku A.A. Gde Anom Merta, said that flame war is a heritage tradition of Satria Kawan Palace. “As younger generations, we must continue and preserve the traditions having been passed down by the elders here. This tradition has actually existed since around hundreds of years ago,” he said after the implementation of the lukat gni, According to him, the lukat gni often known as flame war is one of the purificatory rites carried out to purify the macrocosm and microcosm. Implementation of this annual tradition is expected to be able to neutralize negative effects and create harmony in ourselves and the balance of the universe. “Through this lukat gni, we will create harmony and balance of the universe,” he said. A participant of lukat gni, A.A. Gde Baskara Diningrat, said that he took this tradition to preserve the heritage. Armed with selfconfidence, he said, the heat of the fire afflicting to the body will not be felt. Every fire is believed to eliminate all the impurities inside. “With the confidence I have, the more exposed to the fire, the more impurities will be missing from our body,” said Baskara who participates regularly in this tradition every year. Sacred Wayang Wong Dance of Tejakula Set Four Centuries Ago
Wayang Wong sacred dance that only exists at Tejakula village, Tejakula subdistrict, was presented at Maksan Temple of local village on Thursday (Apr. 6). The location is chosen because the masks of wayang wong characters are kept at local temple. They are even believed to have been four centuries old. The players performing the Ramayana storyline start staging the first episode of the Bala Kanda in the Ramayana epic. In this staging, the storyline presented by the players is entitled “Sander Sita.” It tells about the duke Marica disguising as a golden deer to attract the attention of Sita. When seeing the deer, Sita then asked Rama to chase it. Rama went away from Sita and tried to shoot the disguising deer. Marica cleverly cried out for help, and his voice was similar to Rama’s. Again, Sita asked Laksmana to look for Rama as being told to be facing difficulties. When Laksmana followed Rama, Sita was abducted by Ravana. By and large, when featuring the storyline of kanda (book—Ed) starting from the first through the seventh, it will take approximately 4.5 years to 5 years. Chairman of the Tejakukus Foundation, Gede Komang, amid the staging told that as sacred dance it is mandatory to be performed as devotional services or ngayah at the Maksan Temple of Tejakula. As usual, the performance is done twice every year precisely on Wraspati Dungulan or the day after Galungan. Since it is sacred, the wayang wong must still perform the episodes of Ramayana epic sequentially. “It has become the tasks of the players of wayang wong to perform devotional services at the temple because the masks are stored at this Maksan temple,” said Komang Gede when met Friday afternoon. For several times, the figures of wayang wong characters are presented in the art collaborations. However, the masks staged
in the entertainment are not the sacred ones as those stored at Maksan Temple, but the imitations that are kept by the foundation. Based on the existing references, wayang wong is known as sacred art. This art first appeared at Tejakula village about four centuries ago. From the location of its emergence at Tejakula, this art then spread to several regions in Bali. Although having been widespread, its taksu (divine vibration) never disappears and is kept sacred until now. Wayang wong even becomes one of the nine dances included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Besides, the wayang wong dance is also recognized as one of the intangible cultural heritage objects in 2015. (kmb)

US scales back visa services in Russia after Putin cuts its staff MOSCOW - The United States said on Monday it was scaling back its visa services in Russia after Moscow ordered it to sharply cut its diplomatic staff in retaliation over new U.S. sanctions. President Vladimir Putin, reacting to new sanctions imposed by the U.S. Congress which President Donald Trump reluctantly signed into law, last month ordered Washington to cut diplomatic and technical staff in Russia by 755 people, or by about 60 percent, by Sept. 1. The U.S. embassy in Russia said on Monday the move had forced it to rethink its visa operations and that it was suspending all non-immigrant visa operations across Russia on Aug. 23. It said services would be resumed on Sept. 1, but would be offered “on a greatly reduced scale.” It would be cancelling an unspecified number of scheduled appointments and asking applicants to reschedule, it said in a statement. “Capacity for interviews in the future will be greatly reduced because we have had to greatly reduce our staffing levels to comply with the Russian government’s requirement,” the embassy told applicants in a note on its web site. The move, which is likely to further sour already battered U.S.-Russia relations, means Russian citizens wanting to visit the United States for tourism will no longer be able to apply via U.S. consulates outside Moscow and will have to travel to the Russian capital instead. That will pose a serious logistical challenge for some Russians whose country, the world’s largest by territory, stretches across eleven time zones. The United States has consulates in St Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Vladivostok. “Visa operations at the U.S. consulates will remain suspended indefinitely,” the embassy said. Russia’s decision to reduce the U.S. diplomatic presence had called into question Russia’s seriousness about pursuing better relations with Washington, the embassy added. Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said earlier this month that the United States had issued around 150,000 visas to Russian citizens last year. The U.S. embassy signalled its new scaled back visa regime could be in place for some time. “We will operate at reduced capacity for as long as our staffing levels are reduced,” it said. (rtr)

Police extend search for Barcelona attack van driver outside Spain
BARCELONA - Spanish police on Monday extended the search for the man who killed 13 people in Barcelona by ramming a van into crowds to all of Europe as details emerged of how he fled on foot through the streets of the old town before disappearing. Authorities are looking for Younes Abouyaaqoub, a 22-yearold Moroccan-born man, who they believe was behind the wheel of a van which left a trail of dead and injured on Barcelona’s famed boulevard. The Catalan regional government said all European police forces were now searching for Abouyaaqoub and authorities could not rule out that he had slipped across the border into France. “This person is no longer just being sought in Catalonia but in all European countries, this is an effort by European police,” Joaquim Forn, in charge of home affairs in the northeastern Spanish region, told Catalan radio. Forn confirmed that police were now almost certain Abouyaaqoub was the driver. “Everything points to that,” he added.
Authorities have stepped up checks at Spain’s borders. They also raided more homes overnight in Ripoll, a town in the foothills of the Pyrenees and close to France where many of the suspects in a 12-strong cell thought to be behind the attack had lived. Others thought to be part of the suspected Islamist militant network have been arrested, shot by police or killed in an explosion at a house in Catalonia a day before Thursday’s van attack. Fired workers protest against U.S.-owned miner Freeport Indonesia
Hundreds of workers laid off by Freeport Indonesia blocked routes and set trucks on fire near the company’s mines in the eastern province of Papua on Saturday, company officials said. The Indonesian unit of U.S. mining giant Freeport McMoran Inc. has been embroiled in a labour dispute since May, when around 5,000 workers went on
strike to protest against mass layoffs. Freeport says the layoffs were triggered by unexpected revisions earlier this year in government
rules on taxes and royalties. The protests by the ex-workers, who were demanding their jobs back, prompted police personnel to secure the area.
A spokesman for the company said the protests have not had an impact on operations, although employee access to worksites was being affected. “Some of our employee convoys have been cancelled and we will not be scheduling further convoys until
the situation is conducive again. We have urged our workers to avoid this area until further notice,” said Freeport Indonesia spokesman Riza Pratama. The company is a major source of employment and livelihoods in the impoverished eastern-most province of Indonesia.(rtr)

JAKARTA - The Indonesia Asian Games Organizing Committee (INASGOC) is seeking 20 thousand Indonesian and foreign volunteers during the event in Jakarta and Palembang from Aug 18 to Sept 2, 2018. INASGOCs Administration Deputy, Francis Wanandi, said here on Saturday that the official registration would be opened today until early Sept. Wanandi added that those interested to volunteer may register directly at INASGOCs booth at the Asian Games International Fitness and Health Expo (GOIFEX) 2017 at the Jakarta Convention Center from Aug 19 to 20, while the online registration will be opened later this month.
“The online registration will be opened in two weeks as its current information technology has not been ready yet,” he noted. The registration process is as simple as collecting copy of personal identification, such as citizen identification card, passport, or student card, and then waiting for the acceptance call from INASGOC. “We will manually input the registrants name to the online system in two weeks, then we will call the candidates for the next selection process,” he remarked. According to Wanandi, foreign volunteers are needed, particularly as translators, for athletes and officials from 44 countries to com-
municate with the Indonesian committee. “The terms and conditions for foreign volunteers have not been decided yet, but many people have been showing their interests to pay their own tickets and accommodations,” he explained. Wanandi noted that the volunteers would be initially posted during the Asian Games test events in early Feb 2018. BIRMINGHAM - Mo Farah brought down the curtain on his peerless track career in Britain by winning his farewell race on home soil on an emotional afternoon at the Birmingham Grand Prix Diamond League meeting on Sunday. Conte salutes his Chelsea fighters after battling display LONDON - For all the talk of crisis at Stamford Bridge following last week’s meltdown against Burnley, Chelsea manager Antonio Conte was left saluting his side on Sunday after they edged Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in a match they could just as easily have lost. “I think I must be pleased,” said Conte, whose nine-man side were beaten 3-2 by Burnley in their opening match of the new Premier League season. “I want to thank my players because they showed me great desire and heart and I saw today the fighters.” The Italian was particularly pleased because the champions were without the suspended Cesc Fabregas and Gary Cahill, giving Tiemoue Bakayoko his debut and trusting Andreas Christensen at the heart of their defence. US scales back visa services in Russia after Putin cuts its staff MOSCOW - The United States said on Monday it was scaling back its visa services in Russia after Moscow ordered it to sharply cut its diplomatic staff in retaliation over new U.S. sanctions. President Vladimir Putin, reacting to new sanctions imposed by the U.S. Congress which President Donald Trump reluctantly signed into law, last month ordered Washington to cut diplomatic and technical staff in Russia by 755 people, or by about 60 percent, by Sept. 1. The U.S. embassy in Russia said on Monday the move had forced it to rethink its visa operations and that it was suspending all non-immigrant visa operations across Russia on Aug. 23. It said services would be resumed on Sept. 1, but would be offered “on a greatly reduced scale.” It would be cancelling an unspecified number of scheduled appointments and asking applicants to reschedule, it said in a statement. “Capacity for interviews in the future will be greatly reduced because we have had to greatly reduce our staffing levels to comply with the Russian government’s requirement,” the embassy told applicants in a note on its web site. The move, which is likely to further sour already battered U.S.-Russia relations, means Russian citizens wanting to visit the United States for tourism will no longer be able to apply via U.S. consulates outside Moscow and will have to travel to the Russian capital instead. That will pose a serious logistical challenge for some Russians whose country, the world’s largest by territory, stretches across eleven time zones. The United States has consulates in St Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Vladivostok. “Visa operations at the U.S. consulates will remain suspended indefinitely,” the embassy said. Russia’s decision to reduce the U.S. diplomatic presence had called into question Russia’s seriousness about pursuing better relations with Washington, the embassy added. Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said earlier this month that the United States had issued around 150,000 visas to Russian citizens last year. The U.S. embassy signalled its new scaled back visa regime could be in place for some time. “We will operate at reduced capacity for as long as our staffing levels are reduced,” it said. (rtr)

Police extend search for Barcelona attack van driver outside Spain
BARCELONA - Spanish police on Monday extended the search for the man who killed 13 people in Barcelona by ramming a van into crowds to all of Europe as details emerged of how he fled on foot through the streets of the old town before disappearing. Authorities are looking for Younes Abouyaaqoub, a 22-yearold Moroccan-born man, who they believe was behind the wheel of a van which left a trail of dead and injured on Barcelona’s famed boulevard. The Catalan regional government said all European police forces were now searching for Abouyaaqoub and authorities could not rule out that he had slipped across the border into France. “This person is no longer just being sought in Catalonia but in all European countries, this is an effort by European police,” Joaquim Forn, in charge of home affairs in the northeastern Spanish region, told Catalan radio. Forn confirmed that police were now almost certain Abouyaaqoub was the driver. “Everything points to that,” he added.
Authorities have stepped up checks at Spain’s borders. They also raided more homes overnight in Ripoll, a town in the foothills of the Pyrenees and close to France where many of the suspects in a 12-strong cell thought to be behind the attack had lived. Others thought to be part of the suspected Islamist militant network have been arrested, shot by police or killed in an explosion at a house in Catalonia a day before Thursday’s van attack. The attack in Barcelona was linked to another hours later in the resort down of Cambrils, further down the Mediterranean coastline from Barcelona. A car crashed into passers-by there and attackers got out to try and stab people. Five suspects were shot dead, while a Spanish woman died in the attack. Abouyaaqoub abandoned the van after zig-zagging down Las
Ramblas avenue at high speed, police have said. Witnesses had seen him walking away unarmed from the scene, they said. Spanish papers El Pais and La Vanguardia said they had seen images of the man leaving Las Ramblas then crossing through La Boqueria food market, another tourist attraction, before disappearing. El Pais published CCTV footage on Monday of a man wearing a black and white shirt similar to the one Abouyaaqoub wore when he was caught on a bank security camera the night before the attacks. The regional government is due to give details about the investigation at a news conference at noon. Spanish political leaders from all the main parties were also due to meet later on Monday to review security measures as part of cross-party efforts to unite on anti-terrorist efforts. (rtr)
Fired workers protest against U.S.-owned miner Freeport Indonesia
Hundreds of workers laid off by Freeport Indonesia blocked routes and set trucks on fire near the company’s mines in the eastern province of Papua on Saturday, company officials said. The Indonesian unit of U.S. mining giant Freeport McMoran Inc. has been embroiled in a labour dispute since May, when around 5,000 workers went on
strike to protest against mass layoffs. Freeport says the layoffs were triggered by unexpected revisions earlier this year in government
rules on taxes and royalties. The protests by the ex-workers, who were demanding their jobs back, prompted police personnel to secure the area.
A spokesman for the company said the protests have not had an impact on operations, although employee access to worksites was being affected. “Some of our employee convoys have been cancelled and we will not be scheduling further convoys until
the situation is conducive again. We have urged our workers to avoid this area until further notice,” said Freeport Indonesia spokesman Riza Pratama. The company is a major source of employment and livelihoods in the impoverished eastern-most province of Indonesia.(rtr)

BUSINESS Initial NAFTA talks conclude amid signs schedule could slip
WASHINGTON - The United States, Canada and Mexico wrapped up their first round of talks on Sunday to revamp the NAFTA trade pact, vowing to keep up a blistering pace of negotiations that some involved in the process said may be too fast to bridge deep differences. In a joint statement issued at the end of five days of negotiations in Washington, the top trade officials from the three countries said Mexico would host the next round of talks from Sept. 1 to 5.

One person directly involved in the talks described the schedule as exceedingly fast, given that past trade deals took years to negotiate. The three countries are trying to complete a full modernization of the 23-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement by early 2018, before Mexico’s national election campaign starts. U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to scrap NAFTA without major changes to reduce U.S. goods trade deficits with its North American neighbors, describing it as a “disaster” that drained hundreds of thousands of American manufacturing jobs to low-wage Mexico. The joint statement said the three countries made “detailed conceptual presentations” across the scope of NAFTA issues and began work to negotiate some of the agreement’s texts, although it did not provide details on the topics. Negotiating teams “agreed to provide additional text, comments or alternate proposals during the next two weeks,” ahead of the Mexico round.
SPEED VS SUBSTANCE
A second person participating directly in the talks but not authorized to speak about them said negotiating teams were instructed to “work and work fast,” but added that the substance of the agreement would not be sacrificed for speed. Trade experts have consistently said that the schedule is far too ambitious, given the amount of work and differences on key issues. “It’s hard to imagine how they can do something very substantive and do it very quickly. It’s almost as if you can have one or the other. You can have it quick, or you can have it meaningful,” said John Masswohl, director of government relations at the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association. Lebanese president signs public sector pay rise and tax hike laws
BEIRUT - Lebanese President Michel Aoun signed off on public sector wage increases and related tax hikes on Monday, the national news agency NNA said. Aoun had held off ratifying the two laws since parliament approved them last month, amid concerns from businesses about the impact of more taxes on Lebanon’s fragile economy.
The public sector pay scale law has been under discussion for years. The government had estimated that it would cost around $800 million, or $1.2 billion if it included certain pension increases. The tax law raises value-added tax (VAT) by one percentage point to 11 percent and hikes corporation tax to 17 percent
from 15 percent. Several protests have broken out this year over the proposed tax hikes, which are intended to fund public sector pay rises. In recent weeks, some public sector workers have also gathered in the streets calling for Aoun to finally sign the laws. (rtr)

Lukat gni also called flame war is derived from two words, namely lukat and gni. Lukat or melukat means cleansing of all impurities and the unseen while gni means fire. Lukat gni can be interpreted as a tradition of cleansing or purifying the microcosm and macrocosm from any kind of impurities by means of fire. This tradition is also aimed at maintaining balance of nature and humans to result in harmony in the implementation of the catur bratha penyepian or five abstinences. This lukat gni tradition begins with a joint worship at temples or family temple to invoke safety and smoothness for the implementation of lukat gni. Dozens of youths that take part in this activity are then heading for the catus pata or central intersection of the village to carry out the tradition. Here, the participants further slammed the fire of tied danyuh (dried coconut leaves) onto each opponent. No injuries are seen despite being hit by fire. Gde Anom Merta, said that flame war is a heritage tradition of Satria Kawan Palace. “As younger generations, we must continue and preserve the traditions having been passed down by the elders here. This tradition has actually existed since around hundreds of years ago,” he said after the implementation of the lukat gni, According to him, the lukat gni often known as flame war is one of the purificatory rites carried out to purify the macrocosm and microcosm. Implementation of this annual tradition is expected to be able to neutralize negative effects and create harmony in ourselves and the balance of the universe. “Through this lukat gni, we will create harmony and balance of the universe,” he said. A participant of lukat gni, A.A. Gde Baskara Diningrat, said that he took this tradition to preserve the heritage. Armed with selfconfidence, he said, the heat of the fire afflicting to the body will not be felt. Every fire is believed to eliminate all the impurities inside. “With the confidence I have, the more exposed to the fire, the more impurities will be missing from our body,” said Baskara who participates regularly in this tradition every year. Sacred Wayang Wong Dance of Tejakula Set Four Centuries Ago
Wayang Wong sacred dance that only exists at Tejakula village, Tejakula subdistrict, was presented at Maksan Temple of local village on Thursday (Apr. 6). The location is chosen because the masks of wayang wong characters are kept at local temple. They are even believed to have been four centuries old. The players performing the Ramayana storyline start staging the first episode of the Bala Kanda in the Ramayana epic. In this staging, the storyline presented by the players is entitled “Sander Sita.” It tells about the duke Marica disguising as a golden deer to attract the attention of Sita. When seeing the deer, Sita then asked Rama to chase it. Rama went away from Sita and tried to shoot the disguising deer. Marica cleverly cried out for help, and his voice was similar to Rama’s. Again, Sita asked Laksmana to look for Rama as being told to be facing difficulties. When Laksmana followed Rama, Sita was abducted by Ravana. By and large, when featuring the storyline of kanda (book—Ed) starting from the first through the seventh, it will take approximately 4.5 years to 5 years. Chairman of the Tejakukus Foundation, Gede Komang, amid the staging told that as sacred dance it is mandatory to be performed as devotional services or ngayah at the Maksan Temple of Tejakula. As usual, the performance is done twice every year precisely on Wraspati Dungulan or the day after Galungan. Since it is sacred, the wayang wong must still perform the episodes of Ramayana epic sequentially. “It has become the tasks of the players of wayang wong to perform devotional services at the temple because the masks are stored at this Maksan temple,” said Komang Gede when met Friday afternoon. For several times, the figures of wayang wong characters are presented in the art collaborations. However, the masks staged

Based on the existing references, wayang wong is known as sacred art. This art first appeared at Tejakula village about four centuries ago. From the location of its emergence at Tejakula, this art then spread to several regions in Bali. Although having been widespread, its taksu (divine vibration) never disappears and is kept sacred until now. Wayang wong even becomes one of the nine dances included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Fish famine, fishermen of Pesinggahan switch profession SEMARAPURA — Fishermen on Pesinggahan Beach, Dawan, have been frustrated for the last three months because of the fish famine. A few fishermen have been forced to switch to professions with more promising incomes. One local fisherman 55 year old Wayan Kapit, said that the livelihood of fishermen seems uncertain lately. This profession seems to be unable to give of earning a living. This condition has been exacerbated by the fish famine of the last three months. Catch very few fish” he said while moving his boat on Sunday (Aug. 20). Fishermen usually head out ot sea at between 04:00 and 08:00. Last Sunday, during this time frame, he only caught two fish that he sold for IDR 20,000. This does not even cover operating costs that come to about IDR 50,000. “When compared to the operating cost, the money we make is no where near enough. We don’t just suffer losses, we are harming our selves. Some days, we do make some profits but it is commonplace

In the meantime, a 50 year old fishmonger named Ni Komang Sariani said that amid the fish famine, there is a large demand for fish, especially on holidays like “ Many people are looking for fish, but the catches are very small” she said. Money laundering probe exposes Australian banks’ compliance frailties
HONG KONG - A money laundering probe at Commonwealth Bank of Australia is the latest in a slew of scandals denting the reputation of Australian banks as simple, reliable lenders at the forefront in the battle against financial crime. Australian banks have lagged their global peers in both their spending and their approach on anti-money laundering and knowyour-customer systems as they pursued rapid growth in customer deposits, some banking officials and experts say. “In the last few years, regulators and banks have been focused on changing the whole bank culture to get all levels of staff taking compliance seriously,” said Philippa Allen, CEO of ComplianceAsia, which advices on compliance issues. “That is not as widespread yet in Australia,” she said. “Australian banks have not had the big fines imposed on them like their global peers have.” Know-your-customer (KYC) and anti-money laundering (AML) processes became a key focus globally after HSBC Group and Standard Chartered were hit with hefty fines in 2012.
Major international banks are now spending between $900 million and $1.3 billion a year on financial crime compliance, according to analysis by corporate governance recruitment firm Barclay Simpson. HSBC spent $1.6 billion on regulatory and compliance programmes in the first half of 2017, up 12 percent from a year ago. In comparison, CBA’s spending on risk and compliance fell 7 percent to A$470 million ($371 million) in the year to June, according to the bank’s annual report. CBA said the drop was a result of the “timing and completion of key phases of risk and compliance projects” in the prior year including roll-out of refreshed teller machines. The bank said it has hired more than 50 compliance professionals since 2015 and is strengthening its customer background check processes while upgrading technology used to monitor accounts and transactions for suspicious activity. The guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain collided with merchant vessel Alnic MC to the east of Singapore, while heading to the city-state for a routine port call. Ten U.S. sailors are missing and five were injured in the collision, which resulted in significant damage to the hull of the U.S. vessel and the flooding of some of its compartments. Singapore and Malaysia both said the incident took place in their territorial waters, as the warship and oil tanker collided near the rocky outcrop of Pedra Branca, an area that has long been contested by both countries. Both countries said they were leading the search and rescue operation for the missing sailors. Singapore was once part of Malaysia but they separated acrimoniously in 1965, clouding diplomatic and economic dealings for years. The International Court of Justice ruled in 2008 that Pedra Branca, which means “white rock” in Portuguese, belonged to Singapore and a nearby feature called Middle Rocks belonged to Malaysia. Malaysia sought a review of the ruling this year, reopening the dispute. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore
(MPA) said it was notified just before dawn of the collision in “Singapore territorial waters” in the Singapore Strait, and Singapore was leading the search and rescue operations. Malaysia insisted that the incident happened in its waters, just miles off its southern state of Johor. Malaysia’s navy chief, Admiral Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin, told Reuters the KD Handalan was the first to respond to the distress call from the U.S. ship. “KD Handalan was just three miles from the USS McCain when it first received the distress call,” he said. Malaysia’s Maritime Enforcement Agency Director General Zulkifili Abu Bakar told reporters Malaysia disputed Singapore’s assertion that the accident happened in its waters. He said the Malaysian search and rescue operation was independent of Singapore’s and Malaysia had not communicated with its neighbour about the incident. “What is important is, we do not want to have another collision between assets on the ground,” Zulkifili said. “For the time being, we shouldn’t be arguing about whose waters it is, the most important thing is to focus on search and rescue.” The Malaysian navy assigned four vessels and a Super Lynx helicopter for the search and rescue, while the Malaysian armed forces and maritime authorities also deployed more assets. CISO’s preparation includes studying how German utilities dealt with a 2015 eclipse in that country. Its review prompted the grid overseer to add an additional 200 MW to its normal 250 MW power reserves. “We’ve calculated that during the eclipse, that solar will ramp off at about 70 MW per minute,” said
Greenlee. “And then we’ll see the solar rolling back at about 90 MW per minute or more.” Power utilities say the focus will be on managing a rapid drop off and accommodate the solar surge post the eclipse. Utility executives say they do not expect any interruption in service, but are prepared to ask customers to pare usage if a problem arises.”We want to assure our customers that we have secured enough resources to meet their energy needs, even with significantly less solar generation on hand,” said Caroline Winn, chief operating officer at utility San Diego Gas & Electric Co. Japan launches satellite for advanced GPS operation
TOKYO - Japan on Saturday launched an H-2A rocket carrying a geo-positioning satellite into orbit after a week-long delay, the government said. The launch of Japan’s third geopositioning satellite is part of its plan to build a version of the U.S. global positioning system (GPS) to offer location information used for autopiloting and possible national security purposes. The government postponed the launch a week ago because of a technical glitch. “With the success of the third satellite, we have made another
step closer for having signals from four satellites in the future,” Masaji Matsuyama, minister in charge of space policy, said in a statement. The government plans to launch a fourth satellite by the end of the year to start offering highly precise position information by next April. Japan plans to boost the number of its geo-positioning satellites to seven by 2023, making its system independently operational even if the U.S. GPS becomes unavailable for some reason, a government official said previously. DENPASAR — The Denpasar district court was criticised for the light sentence that was handed down for the murder of Steven Djingga. The defendant in this case was a foreigner from Germany named Giuliano Lemoine. Despite being found guilty of murder, the defendant was only sentenced to 2.5 years in prison. Other than the light indictment, the trial with prosecutor Dewa Arya Lanang Raharja wa also criticized for apparently being closed and being postponed twice. The trial for the indictment finally took place last Wednesday (Aug. 16). The panel of judges presiding over this case was Ester Oktavi. In the indictment, the prosecutor charged the defendant Lemoine under a single law, Article 351 paragraph (3) of
the Criminal Code, regarding persecution resulting in death. The prosecutor demanded a light sentence of 2.5 years for the defendant even though the penalty for murder is 7 years on prison. Inevitably, the attitudes of the prosecutors in handling the murder case involving a foreign defendant with a sentence of 2.5 years in prison raised some questions. Section Head of General Crime at the Denpasar Prosecutor’s Office, Ketut Maha Agung, when asked for his confirmation on Sunday (Aug. 20) did not want to give any explanation on the pretext that he did not know who the prosecutor was. “Who was the prosecutor”, of asked Agung. Lemoine from Germany was brought to court for the case of the murder of Steven Djingga. The incident occurred on Tuesday (Mar. 21, 2007) around 01:00 in front of Paddy’s Club on Jalan Legian, Kuta. Initially, the victim Steven Djingga and witness Wisno Toni visited Paddy’s Club. Upon arrival at the location, there was a fight between the victim and the defendant triggered by a mutual nudge. The victim and the defendant continued fighting outside Paddy’s Club. Being unsatisfied, the defendant Giuliano Lemoine approached the victim Steven Djingga and punched him. MANGUPURA — In order for the government’s non-cash program, to succeed, PT Jasa Marga (Persero) Tbk. Has sped up the installation of automatic toll booths (GTOs) on toll roads. Gradually, Jasa Marga will convert regular toll booths throghtout Indonesia (inclduing Bali) into GTOs. There aim is to have all of the GTOs installed by October 31, 2017. President Director of PT Jasa Marga (Persero) Tbk, Desi Arryani, when contacted recently revealed that the company is continuing to add GTO on the toll roads that it manages. Desi said the government will do its best to let the public know about the new program and then Jasa Marga will do everything gradually to ensure
the success of the non-cash program by converting all regular toll booths into GTOs. “Some of our booths will be full GTO but using GTO hybrid which means that they are equipped with a cross bar in safe locations. We know that sometimes if people are queuing up and the driver at the front of the line does not have a cash card, someone behind them may want to lend them their card . We want to avoid this type of thing. Gradually we will change the booths so that they only accept non-cash options”, she explained. So far very few toll booths accept non-cash payments with just 33 percent nationally and 15 percent in Bali. “This is a very low percentage and over the next few months cash
less payments will be applied on all toll roads. Well this should be studied”, she added. Desi added the number of GTO has reached 40 percent or 466 units of the total number reaching 1.002 units in all toll roads. As targeted, at the end October 2017, the GTO installation throughout Indonesia has reached 100 percent. “We also have to direct the sales of electronic money cards at the booths and so on,” she added. Transition of regular booths to GTO is still running until now. She hoped until the end of September 2017 the transition process has reached 60 percent. “While monitoring the development of non-cash user community, we gradually attempt to reach 100 percent (GTO transition),” he concluded. BANGLI —The management of Penglipuran tourism village is going to build a number of new facilities to support the tourist attraction, including a bamboo museum. For construction of the museum, the customary village has prepared an area of ??0.74 acre. Operations Manager of Penglipuran tourism village, I Nengah Moneng, said on Sunday (Aug. 20) that the development plan of a number of supporting facilities for Penglipuran tourism village such as the bamboo museum, a traditional swimming pool and a playground area, have been discussed with chief of Penglipuran customary village. In the meeting, the chief asked to them to be patient as the plan is still in progress. “We have been asked to wait as the process has not been finalised” said Moneng. Moneng added that chief of Penglipuran customary village has met with member of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) of the RI, I Gusti Ngurah Arya Wedakarna, and bamboo expert from Udayana University, Mrs. Diah recently to discuss the plan to build a bamboo museum. As a result of the meeting, the chief of the customary village asked to prepare 0.74 acres of land for the construction of the tourist attraction’s supporting facilities. “The village authority has no problem with the land requested because the chief of the customary village has already prepared land for the constructin of the bamboo museum. The 0.74 acre of land is located east of the village square. In essence, we are just waiting”, said Nengah Moneng. He revealed that the village is still designing the traditional swimming pool. Originally, the location planned for that purpose was Sangsang River, but tlocal residents are using that part of the river for a watermill. “Land in the weat has been st aside for the playground’ he said. The addition of new facilities, he explained is meant to enhance the Penglipuran attraction so that visitors will not be bored. So far the only activity offered in this village is taking promenades through the village. The bamboo museum, tradiional swimming pool and playround will help visitors feel more comfortable and entertained. “The idea to build a playground came from visitors themselves so we are confident that it will be a popular addition, particularly with children who will no doubt be hapy to play here. Parents will also enjoy their visit to Penglipuran”, said Moneng. Penglipuran customary village chief, I Wayan Supat, emphasised that the plan for the bamboo museum, playgorund and swimming pool are still bein discussed. Construction of the bamboo museum has been followed up on but has yet to be finallized. “The village has already prepared the 0.74 hecatres of land and the funds for the construction will be provided by the central government. We are just waiting for the funds”, he added. Supat went on to say that the plan for the playground and swimming pool are still being discussed and that the source of funds for these two facilities has not been ascertained. “We have already looked into the details of the playground, however the traditional swimming pool of course needs a source of water, so this is still being explored” siad I Wayan Supat. After increase of levy for tourist destination
District govt asked to increase facilities
SEMARAPURA — The government of Klungkung’s plan to apply a levy for a single package of the city tour tour and the increase of admission ticket at Goa Lawah has not been made known to the Association of Indonesia Tour Travel Agency (ASITA) Bali. Nevertheless, this increased has not been questioned however the district government is being asked to make improvements to facilities and and the quality of services. After the revision of Regional Bylaw No.13/2013 on the levy of recreational and sports destinations, the city tour with destinations like Puputan Monument, Klungkung Grand Palace, Semarajaya Museum, Kerta Gosa and the art market is designed into single package. (Child) domestic tourist is increased to IDR 10,000 (child) and adults at IDR 15,000. In the meantime, for foreign tourist, the ticket admission becomes IDR 25,000 (child) and adult at IDR 50,000 (adult). In contrast to the previous price, child was charged at IDR 4,000 and adults IDR 6,000 collected at each object. Chairman of ASITA Bali, Ketut Ardana, said on Sunday (Aug. 20) that the revision of the levy should be submitted to tourism players, especially ASITA earlier, so that it can be submitted to the members as soon as possible. It is considered important to avoid miscommunication with tourists. “Actually, the change is not a problem. More importantly, there are communication and dis-
semination first if they have not got this information,” he said. The revision is expected to be followed by improvement of facilities at the object, such as toilet and so is the quality of service. “Most importantly, it is clean, the water runs and there is toilet. Environmental sanitation should be maintained, not to be disturbed by merchants (tourists—Ed). The tariff increase should also be accompanied with improvements having been done on the object concerned,” he said. In addition to city tours, the increase is also drafted for Goa Lawah Temple attraction. Previously, child was charged at IDR 4,000 and adult at IDR 6,000, while now it has been increased to IDR 6,000 and IDR 12,000 for adult (domestic). In the meantime, foreign tourist is charged at IDR 10,000 (child) and adults at IDR 15,000. This increase of admission ticket has not been known by chief of Goa Lawah Temple, Putu Juliadi, who is also a ticket attendant. However, it declared to
follow the policy. “If going up, we’ll just follow it. But tourists should be served with more things for tourists such as toilet. Now, there has been only one company having international standard. In essence, we hope to provide them with additional,” he said. Parking lot of the tourist object located at Pesinggahan village, Dawan, still has damages at some points. Likewise, location of merchants has not been well arranged. It is expected to get the attention from the government. “Cleaning service staff is not adequate. In essence, we hope the district government can give more attentions,” he said. Previously, the Head of the Klungkung Tourism Office, I Nengah Sukasta, confirmed that to poise the increase in levy, the district government still makes a breakthrough on the tourist object in an effort to improve the quality. “District government will continue to make improvement,” he said. LOS ANGELES - Without a superhero movie or new studio sequel in play, this weekend provided an opening for two smaller films to shine. But as the weekend draws to a close, one is beaming brighter than the other.
That title goes to Lionsgate’s R-rated action comedy “Hitman’s Bodyguard,” which is firing off to $21.6 million during its opening weekend at 3,377 locations. That’s a solid opening, especially during a painful summer for the movie business and sleepy month of August. The final tally was fueled by an aggressive marketing push, and a trio of stars at the center -- Samuel L. Jackson as a notorious hitman, and Salma Hayek as hit equally threatening wife, and Ryan Reynolds as a bodyguard. The film comes courtesy of director Patrick Hughes (“The Expendables 3”) and writer Tom O’Connor. “’The Hitman’s Bodyguard’ is generating great word of mouth among moviegoers,” said Lionsgate’s distribution president David Spitz. “It has a clear runway in the weeks ahead, and we expect it to play well right into September.” Meanwhile, “Logan Lucky” -- a critical darling from Steven Soderbergh and Bleecker Street -- is sputtering. The heist comedy, which relied on an unconventional production and marketing strategy, looks to make $8.1 million this weekend from 3,031 theaters. The film was partially funded through foreign pre-sales and partnering with Amazon for streaming rights. The story -- penned by Rebecca Blunt, who likely doesn’t exist -- centers on a trio of siblings played by Channing
Tatum, Riley Keough, and Adam Driver, who attempt to pull off a massive robbery. It’s set at the Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR race. Of the two, “Logan Lucky” fared better with critics, earning a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, as opposed to “Hitman’s Bodyguard,” which has a 39%. But the roles are reversed when it comes to audience reception -- “Hitman’s Bodyguard” has a B+ CinemaScore as opposed to “Logan Lucky’s” B. In the end, “Logan Lucky” will end up in third for the weekend behind the second frame of “Annabelle: Creation.” The latest in the “Conjuring” universe from Warner Bros. is targeting $15.5 million from 3,542 locations. And “Dunkirk” will land in fourth behind “Logan Lucky” with an estimated $6.7 million. The same studio has more cause to celebrate as “Wonder Woman” crosses $800 million worldwide. “Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature” rounds out the top five this weekend with $5.1 million. Outside of the wide releases, TWC continues its gradual rollout for Taylor Sheridan’s “Wind River.” This weekend it looks to gross $3 million from 694 locations, raising its total cume past $4.1 million. And major acquisition at Sundance, “Patti Cake$” is struggling to find an audience with $66,000 from 14 locations. Overall, the summer of hell continues: This season’s box office has slipped to 13.3% behind last year at this point, according to data from ComScore, which also reports the 2017 box office is now pacing 5% behind 2016. WASHINGTON - Dick Gregory, a comedian who lambasted racism and played a prominent role in the 1960s civil rights movement after becoming one of the first black comics to perform for white audiences, died on Saturday at age 84, his son said. “It is with enormous sadness that the Gregory family confirms that their father, comedic legend and civil rights activist Mr. Dick Gregory departed this earth tonight in Washington, D.C.,” his son, Christian, wrote on Instagram. Gregory, who lived in Washington, died of heart failure in Sibley Memorial Hospital, where he had checked in a week ago after falling ill, said his longtime publicist Steve Jaffe. Gregory’s success as a comedian in the early 1960s helped pave the way for other black comics, such as Richard Pryor, to gain greater fame by reaching a mainstream
audience. Born in St. Louis, Gregory grew up in poverty. He was working for the U.S. Postal Service and performing in front of largely black audiences for low pay when Playboy founder Hugh Hefner saw his act and hired the comedian to perform at his nightclub in 1961. At the time, stand-up comedy was largely segregated. “When I started, a black comic couldn’t work a white nightclub,” Gregory told the Florida TimesUnion. “You could sing, you could dance, but you couldn’t stand flatfooted and talk - then the system would know how brilliant black folks was.” Soon after his break at the Playboy Club, Gregory recorded a number of comedy albums and appeared on television talk shows, becoming one of the highest paid black entertainers in the early 1960s. KUALA LUMPUR/JAKARTA - Malaysia apologised on Sunday for the upside-down printing of Indonesia’s flag in the souvenir guidebook for the Southeast Asia Games, which officials said is being withdrawn and reprinted. The mistake, spotted at the games’ opening in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, on Saturday, sparked an outcry in Indonesia and the hashtag #ShameonyouMalaysia was trending on social media. Indonesian President Joko Widodo told reporters in Jakarta the incident concerned “national pride”, and called for an apology. Within hours, Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman apologised to the government and people of Indonesia for the “inadvertent error”, saying that all measures have been taken “to address this unfortunate situation”. Earlier, Malaysia Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the mistake would be corrected and a new guidebook sent to the games’ officials and guests. “We apologise for affecting the image and reputation of the Republic of Indonesia, as the flag is a symbol of pride,” he said after meeting Indonesia’s delegation to the games. Indonesia’s flag has two horizontal bands with red on the top and white underneath. Turning it upside down makes it look like Poland’s flag. Indonesian Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi acknowl-
edged Khairy’s apology, and said he hoped the incident will not be repeated. Imam earlier expressed dismay, posting pictures of the mistake on his Twitter account after the games’ opening ceremony. “It was a good opening ceremony but spoiled by this fatal negligence that was very painful,” he said. The flag blunder was the latest in a series of embarrassing incidents at the regional sports meet. Last week, a bus driver ferrying the Myanmar women’s football team was arrested on suspicion of stealing a watch and for not possessing a driver’s license.
