Apocalyptic horror “mother!” was conceived in five days, director says VENICE - Darren Aronofsky’s horror film “mother!” about humanity’s unstoppable destruction of the earth was conceived in just five days, the U.S director said ahead of the film’s world premiere on Tuesday. Aronofsky, known for “Black Swan” and “The Wrestler”, said at the Venice film festival that most of his movies take years to create but this was different. He was inspired by what he saw around him and his inability to do much about it: from the United States pulling out of the Paris climate deal, an iceberg melting in the Arctic to people starving, while others live in opulence. “I just had a lot of rage and anger, and I just wanted to channel it into one emotion, one feeling,” the Academy Award nominee told reporters. “And in five days I wrote the first version of the script. It just sort of poured out of me.” The result is an apocalyptic metaphor, rich in religious, environmental and political undertones. Jennifer Lawrence plays mother, a young wife who lives with her poet husband -- Javier Bardem -- in a secluded country house. While he is trying to overcome a serious bout of writer’s block, she is busy

restoring his family home. Their seemingly idyllic existence starts falling apart when unexpected guests -- starting with Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer -- arrive at their doorstep. Lawrence, whose roles usually focus on strong female leads, is thrust into portraying someone living to make her husband happy and asked to give and give until she can give no more. “It was a completely different character from anything I’ve ever done before, but it was also a completely different side of myself that I wasn’t in touch with, didn’t really know yet,” the 27-year-old Academy Award winner said. The two-hour film is set in one house, a massive villa surrounded by fields of grass. The eye of Irma, a Category 5 storm packing winds of 185 miles per hour (295 km per hour), passed over the island of Barbuda east of Puerto Rico, early on Wednesday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami reported, possibly hitting Florida on Saturday. “We are hunkered down and it is very windy ... the wind is a major threat,” said Garfield Burford, the director of news at ABS TV and Radio on the island of Antigua,

south of Barbuda. “So far, some roofs have been blown off.” Most people who were on Antigua and Barbuda were without power and about 1,000 people were spending the night in shelters in Antigua, according to Burford. “It’s very scary ... most of the islands are dark so it’s a very, very frightening,” he said. Several other Leeward Islands, including Anguilla, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, as well as for the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic were under a hurricane warning. “Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion,” the Hurricane Center said, warning that Irma “will bring life-threatening wind, storm

surge and rainfall hazards” to those islands. Along the beachfront of Puerto Rico’s capital, San Juan, work crews scrambled to cover windows with plywood and corrugated metal shutters along Avenida Ashford, a stretch of restaurants, hotels and six-story apartments. “I am worried because this is the biggest storm we have seen here,” said Jonathan Negron, 41, as he supervised workers boarding up his souvenir shop. The NHC said Irma ranked as one of the five most powerful Atlantic hurricanes during the past 80 years and the strongest Atlantic basin storm ever outside the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.

Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello urged the 3.4 million residents of the U.S. territory to seek refuge in one of 460 hurricane shelters in advance of the storm and later ordered police and National Guard troops to begin evacuations of flood-prone areas in the north and east of the island. Due to huge waves, Waterblow Nusa Dua closed again

MANGUPURA - Since almost a month ago, the Waterblow Nusa Dua tourist area has been re-closed because of huge waves that can endanger visitors. As a result, many tourists visiting the Peninsula Island, Nusa Dua, cannot see the scene of the waves hitting the reefs. On Tuesday (Sep. 5), the entrance to the Waterblow location was closed by using bamboo logs and installed with a warning on red pamphlet emphasizing three points. Firstly, the Waterblow Nusa Dua is temporarily closed due to huge waves. Secondly, there is no lifeguard in the area. Thirdly, the Waterblow area is not covered by accident insurance, so any accident risk becomes the responsibility of visitors. Though having been closed, the location remains to be thronged by visitors. A local security guard on duty at the location said that it will be possibly opened after the kite season. “Now, the wind blow is still tight, maybe after the kite season the wind will be back to normal. It is dangerous sir, so please do apologize this area should be closed temporarily from around a month ago,” he said. When confirmed to the Managing Director of Nusa Dua Resort, Wayan Karioka, he justified such condition. But he said that currently is applied the open-close system to this Waterblow tourist area. This step is taken due to huge sea waves that affect the sound of the waves. Previously, there had been an incident where a tourist was crashed by the waves. Karioka added that his management is currently working

on cooperation with insurance company. He admitted the tourist area currently has no guarantee of accident insurance for visitors. Besides, his management still attempted the

Vaginal estrogen not tied to cancer or heart disease risks

LOS ANGELES - Using vaginally applied estrogen to ease menopause symptoms likely doesn’t increase a woman’s risk of heart disease or certain cancers, a U.S. study suggests.

Many women have been reluctant to use hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopause symptoms since 2002, when the federally funded Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study linked pills containing man-made versions of the female hormones estrogen and progestin to an increased risk for breast cancer, heart attacks and strokes. Some women have also been reluctant to use vaginally applied estrogens, which can ease symptoms like dryness and painful intercourse. For the current study, researchers examined data on 45,663 women in the WHI study who didn’t take HRT pills. After an average follow-up of more than six years, there wasn’t a meaningful difference in the odds of cancer, stroke or blood clots based on whether or not women used vaginal estrogen. “The results of the study suggest that the use of vaginal estrogen may not actually carry the same health risks as the use of estrogen pills,” said lead study author Dr. Carolyn Crandall of the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. “These results are reassuring,” Crandall said by email. Women go through menopause when they stop menstruating, typically between ages 45 and 55. As the ovaries curb production of the hormones estrogen and progesterone in the years leading up to menopause and afterward, women can experience symptoms ranging from irregular periods and vaginal dryness to mood swings and insomnia. Study participants who used vaginal estrogen were less likely to be black or African-American, Hispanic, current smokers, diabetic or obese. They were also more likely to be white and college graduates with

household income of more than $100,000 a year. Compared with women who didn’t use vaginal estrogen, women who did had a 48 percent lower risk of heart disease and 60 percent lower odds of hip fractures, researchers report in Menopause. When researchers looked just at women who still had a uterus, the results looked even more favorable for vaginal estrogen users. Among women who had not had their uterus removed, vaginal estrogen users were 61 percent less likely to have heart disease, and 60 percent less likely to have a hip fracture than women who didn’t use vaginal estrogen. The study wasn’t a controlled experiment designed to prove whether or how vaginal estrogen might influence the odds of heart disease, cancer or other health problems. Another limitation of the study is that researchers lacked data on different types of vaginal estrogen, so they couldn’t tell whether one form might be best for avoiding cancer or heart disease. Even so, the findings should reassure women, said Dr. Michelle Warren, medical director of the Center for Menopause, Hormonal Disorders and Women’s Health in New York City. “This shows that it is perfectly safe for any woman to take low-dose vaginal estrogen,” Warren, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. Some women who have avoided vaginal estrogen because they thought it was just as risky as pills may now be able to get relief for previously untreated menopause symptoms, said Dr. Michael Thomas of the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center in Ohio. “A study like this allows women to safely use a form of estrogen that will help their (vaginal) symptoms,” Thomas, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. “They can have intercourse without pain and feel safe they are not risking their life.” (rtr)

For the study, researchers enrolled 78 gay and bisexual young men, ages 15 to 17, from six U.S. cities. The participants all tested negative for HIV at the start of the study, but were at high risk for an infection. Participants received a counseling session about HIV risk, plus access to daily doses of PrEP for the next 48 weeks. Overall, 47 participants completed the study. Only three adverse events occurred that were possibly related to PrEP, the researchers found. “I think the safety piece is important,” Hosek told Reuters Health. “It was well tolerated. We didn’t see many complaints about side effects. We did not see many adverse events.” The researchers also didn’t find an increase in sexually risky behaviors over the study period. Three young men did become infected with HIV, however. Blood samples suggest they were taking less than two doses of PrEP each week at the time of infection. The rate of HIV infection in the study was 6.4 cases per 100 people per year, which is about twice as high as the rate seen among men ages 18 to 22 years enrolled in a similar trial, the researchers write in JAMA Pediatrics. Coffee harvest failure in Bali reaches over 60 percent

Anti-HIV pill safe among gay, bisexual adolescent boys

CHICAGO - A pill that protects against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can be safely used by young men who have sex with men, according to a new study. In a diverse group of teen boys at high risk for HIV infection, preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in the form of a pill that combines the drugs emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate was well tolerated, researchers found. “I do hope clinicians increase their comfort with being able to provide PrEP to adolescents,” said lead author Sybil Hosek, a clinical psychologist and HIV researcher at Cook County Health and Hospitals System’s Stroger Hospital in Chicago. She hopes the new data will be submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and will encourage the agency to approve the pill for use by younger people. The pill is currently approved for HIV prevention in adults. The drug was first approved by the FDA in 2012 as Truvada, which was marketed by Gilead. Trials found that the drug reduced the risk of HIV infection by over 90 percent. But little evidence was collected on its use among gay and bisexual adolescent males, who are among those most at risk for HIV infection.

All walks of life responsible for environmental issues mainly waste

MANGUPURA - Environmental issues, especially the plastic waste problem, and packaging, actually do not only become the responsibility of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK). However, in this case it becomes the responsible holder in national level. The main responsibility in this case lies in all walks of life, whether they are entrepreneurs, religious leaders, community figures, the community itself or so forth. This was confirmed by Director of Waste Management, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, R. Sudirman, in a working visit to the dropbox location as a collection center for carton packaging at Hypermart Bali Mall Galleria, on Tuesday (Sep. 5). As an environmental coach, especially waste management, his directorate strongly supports the garbage collection movement through this dropbox. According to him, the initiation like this needs to be arranged in a national policy. He realized that such steps do not directly make the waste problem resolved. However, this is the step to educate the public in order to be able to sort out packaging waste. He realized that in the past the community used to throw used packs of food in any place. However, the current food packaging has a selling value because it can be processed again. “Education is expensive, and with such a program, at least the education in the community will increase,” he said. This was disclosed by the owner of Mengani coffee processing factory, Hendarto Setyobudi. In the era of independence, the coffee plantation dedicated for export reached 13,000 hectares. But after the independence in 1970, the coffee plantation area only reached 3,000-4,000 hectares. Then, during the reign of President Soeharto, there was an additional rehabilitation project for export crops introduced in 1979. Finally, the coffee plantation expanded to 9,000 hectares. Main buyer of Bali coffee is Japan. “So, President Soeharto has an idea to apply a strict standardized treatment with the financing of Bank Indonesia (BI),” he said in the visit of the Bali provincial government to Mengani on Tuesday (Sep. 5). Bali coffee products are mostly produced in Kintamani reaching 70-80 percent. Two Japanese tourists injured by sharp objects

DENPASAR — Results of the external examination conducted by forensic medical installation of Sanglah Hospital on the body of Japanese tourists indicate there are several open injuries due to sharp objects. The bodies sent by national SAR agency (Basarnas) underwent external examination on Tuesday (Sep. 5) at 11:45. On both victims’ body were only found some burns on the back with a grade of 50-60 percent.

This was conveyed by the Head of Forensic Medicine Installation of Sanglah Hospital, Dudut Rustyadi. On the body of the 73-year-old man was found several injuries. There are open injuries wrapping around the neck, sliced injuries and several stabbed injuries and burns. “And most of the burns are on the back of the body,” he added. This year marks 250 years since the Dutch colonised what is now known as Indonesia but was then refered to as the Dutch East Indies or the Spice Islands. One of the main spices that enriched the Dutch and allowed them to have an artistic and cultural renaissance was nutmeg. Nutmeg was a very rare spice that was only grown in the Banda Islands and given its high demand and rarity had a price that was higher than gold. In 1667 the British traded the Banda Islands with the Dutch for the island of Manhattan and the rest -as they say, is history. The Golden Fruit is a collaborative dance project that Ubit Iskandar has been working on for the last year and has presented versions of it in Amsterdam and elsewhere. Ubit is of mixed heritage with parents from both Indonesia and the Netherlands and is interested in exploring the interactions between these two cultures. As part of their Culture Exchange Program, on Sunday September 3rd, ARMA Museum hosted a presentation of the latest version of The Golden Fruit. This version was born out of a collaboration with Indonesian choreographer Aidil Usman who thought it would be interesting to focus not only on the Dutch coloniser who was trading nutmeg at the time, but more on his wife who was 30 years younger

than him and her interaction with the Banda Islanders. In this highly poetic and moving dance piece, Dutch dancer Soetlin Jacobs, and Indonesian dancers Retna Tan, Maria Bemaletta Apilandi and Tebo Aumbara explored their own personal lineage as a starting point to interpret the story line. Searching into their own DNA for memories of the past, they brought these to life with dance movements that were evocative of distinctly Indonesian traditions and as well as the more stiff movements of the Dutch. The duet between the Dutch dancer and one of the Indonesian dancers expressed both the synchronicity and harmony between the two as well as a kind distinct difference yielding a mesmerizing flow of dynamic movements.

Cambodia says opposition party could be barred from election

PHNOM PENH - Cambodia’s government has raised the possibility that the main opposition party could be ruled out of elections if it does not replace its leader, Kem Sokha, who has been charged with treason. The opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) has said it will not replace its leader and the comments reinforced its fears that Prime Minister Hun Sen plans to cripple it before next year’s elections. The arrest of Kem Sokha on Sunday drew Western condemnation and marked an escalation in a crackdown on critics of Hun Sen, who has ruled for 30 years and could face possibly his toughest electoral challenge from the CNRP next year. “They have to appoint an acting president,” government spokesman Phay Siphan told Reuters on Tuesday. “If they don’t comply with the law, they will not exist and have no right to political activity... It’s their choice, not my choice.” Kem Sokha’s daughter, Kem Monovithya, who is also a party official, said the party would not appoint a new leader. Kem Sokha was only named in February after his predecessor resigned in fear the party would be banned if he stayed on. “The ruling party can drop their divide-and-conquer plan now,” she said. Indonesia, Singapore enhance trust to mark 50th anniversary of bilateral ties

JAKARTA - Indonesia and Singapore will strengthen bilateral ties and enhance trust to commemorate the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries. “We will increase bilateral ties, and the theme of the relations is boosting trust between the two countries,” Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung stated here, Tuesday. Indonesia has the world’s largest population of Muslims and there have been several anti-Myanmar protests in Jakarta and the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur over the treatment of Buddhist-majority Myanmar’s roughly 1.1 million Rohingyas. Roads were blocked and barbed wire barriers put up around the embassy, in a leafy district of the capital, which was patrolled by police in riot gear who set up water cannons. Some protesters chanted “Allahu Akbar” (God is Greatest), while others shouted slogans such as “Slaughter Myanmar” and “Burn the embassy”. Police seize 134 kilograms of crystal meth in N Sumatra MEDAN - Police in North Sumatra province have seized 134 kilograms of crystal meth and arrested two drug suspects. One of the suspects, identified by his initials as SPD, was arrested early last Thursday (Aug 31) at Platina Street in Medan, capital of North Sumatra province, spokesperson of the North Sumatra Provincial Police Senior Commissioner Rina Sari Ginting stated here on Tuesday. During the raid, the police seized 134 packages of crystal meth believed to have been smuggled by a drug syndicate from Malaysia, she noted. It is believed that the drug syndicate has circulation networks in Aceh, Medan, and Jakarta. Based on the results of the investigation into SPD, the police found that the 41-year old man acted as a courier who received and kept the crystal meth, she added. The police later arrested a member of the drug syndicate, identified by his initials as AK, at Listrik Street in Medan at around 09.00 a.m. on Sunday (Sept 3), she revealed. The 34-year old AK also played a role as a courier who brought the crystal meth from Aceh to Medan, she explained. (ant)

The Turkish striker broke the deadlock in the 75th minute when Croatian keeper Danijel Subasic could only push a shot from Oguzhan Ozyakup away towards the feet of Tosun who fired the ball into the net. BUENOS AIRES - Argentina came from behind to draw 1-1 with Venezuela on Tuesday but their inability to take what should have been an easy three points means the 2014 losing finalists are still a long way from guaranteeing their place in Russia next year. The home side had won all six of their previous home qualifiers against Venezuela and were expected to do the same against the team that is bottom of the South American group and without a win in 10 games. Argentina’s failure to take all three points left them fifth in the standings with two matches remaining, out of the top four spots which bring with them direct qualification for the finals. “Venezuela started to grow when they realised we couldn’t finish them off,” Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli said after the match. “We let a great opportunity escape us. That’s football and it can happen. “The important thing is we all push so Argentina can be at the 2018 World Cup.” Venezuela were already well out of the running for Russia but they got the opening goal just four minutes into the second half. Jhon Murillo ran onto an incisive through ball and expertly chipped the advancing goalkeeper to give the visitors a surprise lead. The advantage, though, lasted just four minutes and when Argentina equalized it came from the same left flank where all of their most dangerous attacks originated. Marcos Acuna, who had replaced the injured Angel Di Maria after 25 minutes, fought off his marker and the cross was knocked into his own goal by Rolf Feltscher. Mauro Icardi had a good shout for a penalty waved away after an hour but Argentina,

with Lionel Messi not at his commanding best, looked lacklustre throughout and were unable to stamp their authority on the match. Neither they nor Venezuela created many clearcut chances and the home side trooped off to the boos of their disgruntled fans. Brazil top the 10team group and are the only South America side to have so far qualified for Russia 2018. Uruguay, who won 2-1 away at Paraguay, are in second-place with 27 points, followed by Colombia on 26. Peru, who have not played in the World Cup Finals since 1982, beat Ecuador 2-1 earlier in the evening to move into fourth place with 24 points, ahead of Argentina on goal difference. The fifth-placed side go into an intercontinental playoff against New Zealand. (rtr)
