VENICE - Music video “Thriller” was not the product of a brilliant idea but was made because pop star Michael Jackson wanted to be a monster, director John Landis said at the Venice film festival on Monday. Landis was in Venice to present the 3D version of the video, which was made 35 years after the original. It was screened as a special event in the out-of-competition section. “(Thriller) was nobody’s good idea, it was no brilliant business plan,” John Landis told journalists. “It was a vanity video because Michael wanted to be a monster. And everything that came, evolved from that, was spectacularly successful and I was totally surprised.” Landis said Jackson first approached him about making the video because he liked his work on “An American Werewolf in London” and the two, along with make-up artist Rick Baker, met to look at photographs from old monster movies. “Turns out he hasn’t seen many horror films, they were too scary. I found him great,” Landis said, laughing. “He wanted zombies, but the

big thing for Mike was turning into a monster.” Asked about his first meeting with Jackson, the child star turned King of Pop who set the world dancing but died in 2009 at the age of 50, Landis said he was “joyful” and “childlike” and quickly became a close family friend. “Michael was very determined that everything had to be the best, the greatest,” he said. “He had a spectacular work ethic, but he was an old pro, the guy has been performing since he was 8 years old.” While making “Thriller” Jackson was happy to “show up and do whatever I wanted,” Landis said. It was different when they met again to produce “Black or White” in 1991. “On ‘Black or White’ I was working for Michael. It was different. We were still fine, but ... he was much more guarded,” Landis said. “I know it’s not easy being a celeb,

‘Hitman’s Bodyguard’ Leads Slowest Labor Day Weekend in About Two Years LOS ANGELES - A disastrous domestic summer box office is ending on a low note. Without any fresh competition in wide release, “Hitman’s Bodyguard” appears the be the holiday weekend’s movie of choice. The Lionsgate release with Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson at the center should earn $13.4 million from 3,370 locations over the four-day weekend. Its seemingly imminent win would make “Hitman’s Bodyguard” the only flick this summer to retain the top spot on the domestic box office charts for three consecu-

tive weekends. “Dunkirk,” “Wonder Woman,” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” each stayed first for two frames. But while the action comedy is certainly profitable at this point, its threepeat is less due to the movie’s overwhelming popularity, and more attributable to the lack of alternatives. This -- the first Labor Day weekend in recent history without a new wide release -- is tracking to have the lowest four-day total for the holiday in nearly two decades. The 28 movies currently in release are tracking to bring in about $95.5

million, according to ComScore. Not since 1998 has the Labor Day domestic box office dropped below a $100 million four-day total. The last time there were no wide releases over Labor Day weekend was in 1992. Of the weekend’s medium-sized launches, Sony’s re-release of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” is faring best. The 40th anniversary theatrical event is set to take in $2.3 million for the four-day holiday weekend from 901 locations. Meanwhile, TWC’s long-delayed release “Tulip Fever” is not finding its audience.

The historical drama starring Alicia Vikander is expected to earn $1.4 million from 765 locations. A unique collaboration between Marvel Television and ABC Studios brought “Marvel’s Inhumans” to 393 Imax screens in North America, where it is expected to earn $1.5 million. And Pantellion’s “Do It Like an Hombre” is looking at about $1.4 million for the four days at 382 locations. Otherwise, “Annabelle: Creation” should remain in the two slot for Warner Bros. The horror sequel has an estimated three-day tally of $7.3

million from 3,358 locations, and is tracking for $9.3 million with the extended holiday. While “Tulip Fever” might fail to crack the weekend’s top 20, TWC has the third and fourth highest-grossing movies of the weekend. “Wind River” is expecting an $8 million four-day total from 2,602 spots. The animated adventure “Leap!” should follow close behind with $6.6 million from 2,705 locations. “Logan Lucky” should round out the top five with a reported $4.4 million three-day and estimated $5.6 million for the entire holiday. Indonesia to bar Myanmar protest at world’s biggest Buddhist temple

JAKARTA - Indonesian police have pledged to bar Islamist groups from staging a rally on Friday at the Borobudur Buddhist temple in central Java to protest against the persecution of Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslims. Islamist groups say they plan the demonstration close to the stupa-topped Borobudur temple, which dates from the 9th century and is a popular tourist site, to call for an end to violence against the religious and ethnic minority in Myanmar. Indonesia has the world’s largest population of Muslims and there have been a number of anti-Myanmar protests in Jakarta and the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur over the treatment of Buddhist-majority Myanmar’s roughly 1.1 million Rohingyas. Almost 125,000 Rohingyas have been forced to flee clashes between Rohingya insurgents and the army in the northwest Rakhine state. Tens of thousands have crossed the border into neighbouring Bangladesh. “The action at Borobudur temple will be prohibited,” National Police Chief Tito Karnavian told reporters, according to media. “This is not just part of the heritage of Indonesia, but that of the world. There is no need for protests in response to the Rohingya conflict because the Indonesian government is taking action on it already.” Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi on Monday met Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi and top security officials to call for

a halt to the bloodshed. Marsudi was due in Dhaka, the Bangladeshi capital, on Tuesday. Pakistani Foreign Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif expressed “deep anguish at the ongoing violence against the Rohingya Muslims” and urged the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to take “immediate and effective action to bring an end to all human-rights violations against innocent and unarmed Rohingya Muslim population”. An organiser of Friday’s planned protest said the groups wanted to protest peacefully near the Borobodur temple to show Indonesia’s tolerance. “The Borobudur is an extraordinary symbol of tolerance,” said Anang Imamuddin. “We want the world to know that it is in a majority Muslim country but it is safe. Buddhist monks are safe here too.” A Nobel laureate and Muslim nations in Asia criticized Myanmar’s persecution of its Rohingya Muslim minority as thousands in Indonesia and elsewhere staged angry protests

against Aung San Suu Kyi and her government. At least 87,000 refugees from Myanmar’s western Rakhine state have fled to neighboring Bangladesh since violence escalated in late August, according to the United Nations, overwhelming existing camps for the displaced. Malala Yousafzai, the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize, said her “heart breaks” at the suffering of Rohingya Muslims and urged Myanmar’s leader, a fellow Nobel laureate, to condemn the violence against the Rohingya minority. “Over the last several years I have repeatedly condemned this tragic and shameful treatment,” she said in a statement posted on Twitter. “I am still waiting for my fellow Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to do the same. The world is waiting and the Rohingya Muslims are waiting.” The latest eruption of violence in Rakhine state has killed more than 400 people and triggered an exo-

dus of Rohingya into Bangladesh. It began after insurgents attacked Myanmar police and paramilitary posts in what they said was an effort to protect their ethnic minority from persecution by security forces in the majority Buddhist country. In response, Myanmar’s military unleashed what it called “clearance operations.” Human Rights Watch says satellite imagery shows 700 buildings were burned in the Rohingya Muslim village of Chein Khar Li, just one of 17 locations in Rakhine state where the rights group has documented burning of homes and property. Myanmar denies citizenship to Rohingya, who have lived in the country for generations, and the group has frequently faced hostility and violence from the Buddhist majority, often fanned by hard-line monks and inflammatory comments from officials. Reports of killings by security forces and images of lines of people including children and the elderly attempting to cross the swampy border into Bangladesh have sparked anger and battered the reputation of Suu Kyi, previously lionized for her decades of resistance to Myanmar’s former military rulers. of thousands of people took to the streets in Russia’s predominantly Muslim Chechnya to protest what the Chechen leader called “genocide of Muslims” in Myanmar. Indonesian President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has called for an end to violence in Rakhine state and sent his foreign minister to Myanmar where she with met Monday with Suu Kyi and armed forces commander Min Aung Hlaing. Over the weekend, protesters in Jakarta set fire to a poster of Suu Kyi outside the Myanmar embassy and further protests are set for this week. Local media reported that one group plans to stage a protest at Borobudur, a famous ancient Buddhist temple in central Java. “The world remains silent in the face of the massacre of Rohingya Muslims,” said Farida, an organizer of Monday’s protest who uses a single name. MANGUPURA - Tourist arrival through Ngurah Rai Airport continues to increase. Based on the data of immigration office up to July 2017, a total of 3.5 million foreign tourists come in through Ngurah Rai Airport. This figure rose by 22.18 percent compared to 2016. General Manager of Ngurah Rai Airport, Yanus Suprayogi, said on Monday (Sep. 4) that of the total number, foreign tourists from China still dominate the significant increase, amounting to 25 percent or about 896,000 people. During the past two years, China is occupying the highest foreign tourists coming to Bali. In the meantime, Australian tourists are ranked second with the total number of 632,000 or 18 percent and the ranked third is Indian tourist reaching 234,000 or 7 percent. “In 2017, the Ngurah Rai Airport is targeted to bring

in 5.58 millions of foreign tourists. Seeing the record until last July, it indicates the achievement of almost 64 percent. When seeing the growth that continues to increase significantly, we are confident that we can meet the target,” he said. Yanus added that this optimism is also supported by the large interest of foreign airlines to serve flight to Bali. “Last month, we first received the Mehan Air flight from Tehran, Iran. Bali is the first destination in Indonesia targeted by Mehan Air,” he said. He said the trend of tourists from the Middle East also experiences an increase. This year, the percentage has increased by two-fold or 100 percent compared to last year. “In 2016, during the period from January to July there are approximately 17,000 people and this year reaches 35,000. Indeed, the absence of parking space becomes the main problem. Rai Yuda hoped that later on there is cooperation with local customary village to overcome the problem. If there is indeed a land that can be used, it must be submitted / proposed to the government. The government will decide whether to be purchased or leased. Clearly the process must be in accordance with applicable laws and regulations through relevant agency handling the land. “Indeed, the availability of parking space at Tanjung Benoa area is inadequate. being influenced by the lack of parking space and congestion, it is also influenced by the absence of alternative road section. So far, the condition of Jalan Pratama as the only one road access to Tanjung Benoa can no longer accommodate the number of vehicles. Therefore, other than preparing a representative parking space, he also hoped the presence of an alternative road section. “To resolve the congestion problem at the location, it is indeed required to have a ring road as an alternative route, since there is no alternative road heading for Tanjung Benoa,” he said. Related to procurement of parking space and ring road that requires a long process, he will coordinate with related parties. For short term, he will coordinate with local headman and sub-district head and related technical institutions. “Such condition requires synergy to find a solution that is not solely becoming the responsibility of transportation agency but also needs a shared thinking related to the context of territorial and authority,” he said. To minimize congestion, he expected the awareness of motorists not to use the road shoulder as a parking space. BEIJING - A buzz fills the sky above a flight base in northern Beijing, as pilots practise take-offs and landings ahead of tests to qualify for a licence - to fly drones. Drone enthusiasts in China, the world’s top maker of consumer unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), are scrambling for licences after the government adopted strict rules this year to tackle incidents of drones straying into aircraft flight paths. “A drone is not a toy,” said Yang Nuo, the principal of the drone training school in the Chinese capital, who expects more students to sign up in a drive to boost flying skills. “It involves complicated aerial theoretical knowledge.” Gao Huiqiang, 32, said his construction company told him to seek a licence. “Since the laws on drones are tightening and a legal framework is being built, they told me to come and get the license first,” he added. In June, China set an end-August deadline for owners of civilian drones to register crafts up to a certain weight under their real names. Last week, a test-flight

base opened in the commercial hub of Shanghai, which requires civilian drones to fly below 150 m (492 ft), the official news agency’s Xinhuanet website said. Others have balked at the idea of spending around 10,000 yuan ($1,534) for an official qualification, particularly as uncertainty surrounds future regulations. “They don’t know when the next regulation will be introduced,” said Hao Jiale, the manager at a DJI drone store. “Some people want to wait and see.” Privately-held SZ DJI Technology Co Ltd, based in the southeastern city of Shenzen, had a roughly 70 percent share of the global commercial and consumer drone market, according to a 2016 estimate by Goldman Sachs and Oppenheimer analysts. Despite the curbs, prospects for growth look bright. China’s camera drone market will see a compound annual growth rate of 68 percent in five years, with shipments reaching 3 million units by 2019, up from 40,000 in the third quarter of 2015, tech research firm IDC said last year. More than 120,000 drones have been registered in China, Xinhuanet said, compared to just 77,000 registered users in the United States. (rtr)

SEOUL - North Korea said on Sunday it has developed a more advanced thermonuclear weapon that possesses “great destructive power” and will be loaded on a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that experts believe has the range to hit much of the United States. The report by North Korea’s official KCNA news agency comes amid heightened regional tension following Pyongyang’s two tests of ICBM missiles in July that potentially could fly about 10,000 km (6,200 miles), putting many parts of the mainland United States within range. Under third-generation leader Kim Jong Un, North Korea has been pursuing a nuclear device small and light enough to fit on a long-range ballistic missile, without affecting its range as well as making it capable of surviving re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere. North Korea “recently succeeded” in making a more advanced hydrogen bomb, the country’s official KCNA news agency said. “The H-bomb, the explosive power of which is adjustable from tens kiloton to hundreds kiloton, is a multifunctional thermonuclear nuke with great destructive power which can be detonated even at high altitudes for super-powerful EMP (electromagnetic pulse) attack according to strategic goals,” KCNA said. “All components of the H-bomb were homemade and all the processes ... were put on the Juche basis, thus enabling the country to produce powerful nuclear weapons as many as it wants,” KCNA quoted Kim as saying. Juche is North Korea’s homegrown ruling go-it-alone ideology that is a mix of Marxism and extreme nationalism preached by state founder Kim Il Sung, the current leader’s grandfather. Kim Jong Un, who visited the country’s nuclear weapons institute, “watched an H-bomb to be loaded into new ICBM” and “set forth tasks to be fulfilled in the research into nukes,” KCNA said.

Tensions on the Korean peninsula have been high since last month when North Korea threatened to launch missiles into the sea near the strategically located U.S. Pacific territory of Guam after U.S. President Donald Trump said Pyongyang would face “fire and fury” if it threatened the United States. North Korea further raised regional tensions on Tuesday by launching an intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan, drawing international condemnation. The KCNA report made no mention of plans for a sixth nuclear test. Experts and officials have said North Korea could conduct its sixth nuclear test at any time, and that the reclusive country has maintained a readiness at its nuclear test site to conduct another detonation test. U.S. officials have told Reuters that while North Korea has had parts in place for a nuclear detonation going back several months, no new activity had been seen recently at its known nuclear test site in Punggye-ri in its northeastern region. North Korea last year conducted its fourth and fifth nuclear tests, saying the fourth in January 2016 was a successful hydrogen bomb test, although outside experts say the claim has not been proven. Earthquakes triggered by North Korean nuclear tests have gradually increased in magnitude since Pyongyang’s first test in 2006, indicating the isolated country is steadily improving the destructive power of its nuclear technology. Its fifth nuclear test in September 2016 was measured to be possibly North Korea’s biggest detonation ever, but the earthquake it caused was still not believed to be big enough to demonstrate a thermonuclear test. To ensure their safety, local fishermen are cooperating with the Karangasem Natural Resources Agency (KSDA), the Karangasem Water Police and Bugbug Customary Village authorities to keep the turtle hatchlings safe by housing them in a warehouse. Once they are old enough the turtle hatchlings are released back into the sea. The last turtle release took place on Saturday (Sep 2) when dozens found their way to the sea.

Local fisherman Made Sudana who is part of Bugbug village’s Sri Baruna fishermen’s group explained that there were a total of 58 turtle hatchlings that were released this time. They hatched form their eggs on September 1 and were then moved into the warehouse. The turtle hatchlings were reported to the customary apparatus, police and KSDA Karangasem. “Indeed, many turtles have been laying their eggs here since ancient times. But in the past many of these eggs were taken by local residents. Today after having been educated by the BKSDA and police authorities, people understand that that this animal is a protected species. So now the turtle eggs are kept safe”, explained Sudana. Green turtles usually come to shore to lay their eggs at night or early in the morning. Local fishermen often encounter the turtles laying their eggs around this time as the fishermen head out to sea. Each turtle can lay anywhere form 200 to 500 eggs. Turtle eggs usually hatch after 40 days provided that the temperature in the environment is well maintained. “If the eggs are swamped in sea water, they will not hatch, so we move them away form the shore” he added. Head of the BKSDA Karangasem, I Gusti Bagus Suteja, said that this is one of the conservation efforts being made by his agency to ensure that green sea turtles are not made exctinct. After finding out that the green turtles have been laying lots of eggs recently, the BKSDA approached local residents and the customary apparatus in order to work together to protect the green turtles. Supporting facilities were also installed aorudn the beach area including sign boards that explain to people about this turtle. The BKSDA, he added will intensify their patrolling of the areas where the green turtles breed. “ We do conservation as well as education. These turtle hatchlings have now

become a tourist attraction on Candidasa Beach” said Suteja. Knowing that the green turtle is a protected animal, local residents have now performed three turtle hatchling releases, The first release was carried out on Candidasa on July 11 by Chief of Karangasem Police, Wayan Gede Ardana, accompanied by Chief of Water Police, I Made Wartama, along with local residents, fishermen and foreign tourists who were staying at Puri Bagus Candidasa. A total of 32 hatchling were released at that time. “Green turtles are protected because of their scarcity so since we found out we have ordered the water police to intensify their monitoring along Candidasa Beach. We do not want the newly hatched turtles to fall to the hands of irresponsible people”, said the police chief. The second release was carried out on August 8 at the same location. The turtle hatchlings were released by the apparatus of Bugbug Customary Village together with BKSDA

Karangasem and the Karangasem water police. Green turtles often choose this coastline as their breeding ground and have become one of the main tourists attractions of this area. The green turtle has become an icon in Candidasa. Villagers in this area are often aware when the turtles have hatched and are trying to make their way to the sea. Chief of Bugbug customary village, Jro Wayan Mas Suyasa, affirmed that the Customary Village of Bugbug are committed to supporting the conservation efforts of the KSDA Karangasem and the Karangasem Water Police. Customary village authorities have also made it clear to local residents that they need to protect the green turtles from poachers. “ If anyone finds a green turtle, it should be taken back to the sea, the same is true for turtle hatchlings. This turtle is a symbol of kurma avatar (the second avatar of Vishnu). If we need in the customary village need a turtle for a ceremony, the turtle will come to us of its own accord” he said. (gik)

incident occurred at 01:30 when the victim and his friends were sitting on Kuta Beah enjoying some drinks. A group of ten other young men approached them wanting to join them in their drinking. The victim and his friends rejected their request. One of the culprits wanted to entrust his drunken friend to the seated group but this request was also rejected. A shouting match quickly ensued. Kurniawan tried to intervene to resolve the dispute but was met with the sting of a large chain necklace that left his right eyebrow

Flagging stone mining at Pacung

SHAMLAPUR - Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi has come under pressure from countries with large Muslim populations including Bangladesh, Indonesia and Pakistan to halt violence against Rohingya Muslims after nearly 125,000 of them fled to Bangladesh.

WORKING as flagging stone miner engaged by residents of Alas Sari, Pacung village, Tejakula subdistrict, started around 1980. More than dozens of residents in this area are looking for flagging stones on private land or on the land owned by Pacung customary village. People understand if the stone quarrying job is full of risk. Though being risky, Widiasa and other stone miners are difficult to leave the profession. To avoid accidents while searching for flagging stones, he must take into account the location of the land to be excavated. Based on his experience, the location at flat land is certainly safe from the threat of accident while digging the ground. However, if location of the stone mining is steep, especially in hilly locations, he himself must think twice before deciding to quarry the land. To protect his legs or hands, he uses boots and hand gloves. “Flat land is safe to be quarried. However, if steep it must consider carefully before starting digging. But, sometimes the risk and incident cannot be predicted. Like the incident that happened to our colleague who is expert in digging, he remains to have the incident. Now, we are traumatized by the incident,” he explained. Headman of Pacung, I Made Yasa, said that most of the residents at Alas Sari hamlet have been working as flagging stone miners since many years ago. He himself did not know about the history on the flagging stone quarrying to sell. From the narrative of local community leaders, the flagging stone has existed since hundreds of years ago. It is said that under the soil layers ranging from the Pacung, Sembiran, and Julah village are buried many flagging stones. Rocky condition of the area has something to do with the founding of the temple known as the Ponjok Batu Temple.

a meeting with the village apparatus and the victim’s family. In order to purify psychically the ambience in the flagging stone quarrying area and village area in general, the village is going to hold a balik sumpah ceremony. In addition, the ceremony is to apologize psychically for the activity of quarrying flagging stones estimated to have exceeded the limit. Moreover, location of the incident is not far from Dhang Kahyangan (saint-related) Temple of Ponjok Batu. “Since the search for the victim’s buried legs at the scene has been agreed, a grandiose ritual will be held and discussed further with village apparatuses. In addition, since the incident is the first and claimed fatality, this must be carried out a ritual to apologize. SYDNEY - Australia’s high court on Tuesday began a hearing on the validity of a government plan for a postal vote to legalise same-sex marriage, a challenge that risks destabilising the ruling centre-right coalition. If the court rules against the plan, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull could find himself presiding over a government fractured on the issue, endangering his razor-thin parliamentary majority of one. With the non-compulsory vote a couple of weeks away, its opponents have launched a legal challenge, saying the vote needs the backing of parliament - which has twice rejected such a national ballot. “This case is about dignity and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex Australians,” Anna Brown, director of legal advocacy at the Human Rights Law Centre, which leads the opposition to the vote, told reporters in Melbourne.

“We’re here because we all believe and want marriage equality. This postal plebiscite has big question marks around its legal validity.” Conservative lawmakers have threatened to resign if the ballot policy is not adhered to, risking Turnbull’s parliamentary majority. But he may not be able to stick to the postal vote policy, as a group of liberal politicians has threatened to rebel and side with the opposition, which would probably end his tenure as leader, analysts say. Turnbull supports same-sex marriage, as do two-thirds of Australians, but his party’s conservative wing has threatened a revolt if he deviates from the policy of a national ballot. Frustrated by the political impasse, a group of backbenchers this year said they were ready to vote with the opposition Labor Party to secure samesex marriage, a plan only abandoned when Turnbull offered a postal vote.

While a rejection of the legal challenge offers a political solution, an increasingly vitriolic campaign forced Turnbull to urge both sides to show mutual respect. Turnbull’s plea has gone largely unheeded, however. Opponents of same-sex marriage last week launched a contentious campaign advertisement that the government immediately rejected as inaccurate. Since the postal vote is not a formal election it is not subject to the same rules on political advertisements, and activists fear a surge in malicious campaigning in the run-up. “Our concern is around a sustained, intense campaign. LONDON - Business activity in the euro zone stayed robust in August as it outpaced Britain, where an economy increasingly bogged down by Brexit worries lost momentum, surveys showed on Tuesday.

LONDON - Struggling sterling steadied just above $1.29 on Tuesday, with weaker-than-expected numbers from Britain’s dominant services industry adding to a downbeat run of data that has seen the pound lose almost 3 percent versus the dollar in the past month. The monthly Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) survey for the services sector showed growth at its weakest in almost a year, as worries over Britain’s exit from the European Union and the hit that could have on investment and the broader economy

mounted. The index fell to 53.2 in August still above the 50 mark that separates growth from contraction but lagging forecasts for a reading of 53.5. The pound briefly dipped after the numbers, hitting the day’s low of $1.2908, before recovering to trade at $1.2925 by 0842 GMT. Against the euro, it was up 0.1 percent at 91.96 pence , just over a penny away from an 11-month low hit last week. “The services PMI data has shown that the UK’s economy is

losing steam, and this means that the Bank of England (will) have to continue its support,” said Think Markets analyst Naeem Aslam, referring to the BoE’s loose monetary policy that includes record low interest rates. The BoE will meet next week to discuss policy. The services data followed numbers from the construction sector the previous day that showed growth at a one-year low. Ngampin Tradition, Gratitude Expression to Birth of Great-Grandchild

Related to traditions often practiced in Hinduism, either in each family, village or district, it has its own characteristics. As in the Balinese nomenclature, a person who has get married will certainly have children, then have grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and the next descendant according to the Balinese family nomenclature. Various traditions are held to remember the family order. One of them is through tradition of giving betel leaves with betel nut or better known as the tradition of ngampin kumpi by greatgrandmother (kumpi lingsir) to its great grandchild (kumpi alit). This tradition is very rarely implemented and even many people do not know because currently it is rare for parents who live longer to even have a great grandchild. However, this tradition remains often to be carried out at villages such as at Rendang in Karangasem. Ni Wayan Logég, a great grandmother who is staying healthy and having a great grandchild, said that at Rendang village, Karangasem and the surrounding areas, the ngampin tradition is still often carried out. This tradition is carried out by touching the baby using betel leaves and betel nuts. The nail of the baby’s thumb are smeared

Putin calls tougher N.Korea sanctions senseless, warns of “global catastrophe”

XIAMEN - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that imposing tougher sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear missile programme would be counter-productive and said threats of military action could trigger “a global catastrophe”. Putin, speaking after a BRICs summit in China, criticised U.S. diplomacy in the crisis and renewed his call for talks, saying Pyongyang would not halt its missile testing programme until it felt secure. “Russia condemns North Korea’s exercises, we consider that they are a provocation ... (But) ramping up military hysteria will lead to nothing good. It could lead to a global catastrophe,” he told reporters. “There’s no other path apart from a peaceful one.” Putin was speaking after South Korea said an agreement with the United States to scrap a weight limit on its warheads would help it respond to the North Korea threat after Pyongyang conducted its sixth and largest nuclear test two days ago. Russia, which shares a border with North Korea, has repeatedly joined China in calling for negotiations with Pyongyang, suggesting that the United States and South Korea halt all major war games in exchange for

North Korea halting its testing programme.

U.S. APPROACH “RIDICULOUS”

While describing additional sanctions as “the road to nowhere”, Putin said Russia was prepared to discuss “some details” around the issue, without elaborating. The Russian leader also lashed out at the United States, saying it was preposterous for Washington to ask for Moscow’s help with North Korea after sanctioning Russian companies whom U.S officials accused of violating North Korea sanctions. “It’s ridiculous to put us on the same (sanctions) list as North Korea and then ask for our help in imposing sanctions on North Korea,” said Putin. “This is being done by people who mix up Australia with Austria,” he added. The United States has floated the idea of requiring all countries to cut economic links with North Korea to try to strong-arm Pyongyang into changing its behaviour. In Moscow’s case, that would mean stopping using North Korean labourers, tens of thousands of whom work in Russia, and halting fuel supplies to Pyongyang. Hurricane Irma barrels toward Caribbean, southern United States VIRGIN ISLANDS - Hurricane Irma, a powerful Category 4 storm, plowed toward the Caribbean and the southern United States on Tuesday as islands in its path braced for possible life-threatening winds, storm surges and flooding. Hurricane warnings and watches were in effect for parts of the Leeward Islands, the British and U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, in preparation for a storm that was intensifying with 150 mph (240 kph) winds, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. “Dangerous Hurricane Irma heading for the Leeward Islands,” the hurricane center said. “Preparations should be rushed to completion as tropical storm-force winds are expected to arrive in the hurricane warning area by late Tuesday.” A Category 4 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale means sustained winds of 130-156 mph (209-251 kph) with “catastrophic” outcomes. They range from uprooted trees and downed power lines to water and electricity outages and enough damage to leave property uninhabitable, according to the Miami-based hurricane center. In preparation for the storm, the government of economically struggling Puerto Rico has declared a state of emergency and activated the National Guard. The U.S. territory, home to about 3.4 million people, has 456 emergency shelters prepared to house up to 62,100 people. Puerto Rico also froze prices on basic necessities, including food and water, medicines, power generators and batteries, to help residents prepare. Yamaha rule out replacing injured Rossi at Misano

MISANO - Yamaha have ruled out replacing injured Italian Valentino Rossi at this weekend’s San Marino Grand Prix at Misano. The MotoGP team said in a statement on Monday that Spaniard Maverick Vinales would be their sole rider at the eastern Italian track. Rossi, whose title hopes are effectively over, had surgery on his broken right leg last week and left hospital on Saturday. Doctors have said the Italian, fourth in the overall standings and 26 points behind leading compatriot Andrea Dovizioso, will need 30-40 days’ rest. Six MotoGP races remain and the Italian looks set to miss the next one after Misano, at Spain’s Aragon circuit on Sept. 24, as well although he has vowed to return as soon as possible. In 2010, Rossi broke his right leg in practice for the Italian Grand Prix and took six weeks to return.

KNIFE ACCIDENT British MotoGP rider Cal Crutchlow has had surgery on his left index finger ahead of Sunday’s San Marino Grand Prix after accidentally severing a tendon while using a knife. The two times race winner, who competes for the non-works LCR Honda team, is eighth in the MotoGP standings. “Unfortunately, I sliced my finger with a knife yesterday and it severed the tendon on my left index finger,” the MotoGP website quoted the rider as saying on Monday. “I slept on it, but as the bleeding continued this morning, I went to the Emergency Room at Pistoia Hospital...I then had an operation on my finger to reattach the tendon and then stitch it all back up.” Crutchlow said he had seen a specialist in Parma who had given him a splint for the finger. “I am sure it will be difficult, but I will try 100 percent as always. David Brewer, the U.S. Open tournament director, said the speed on Ashe is the same as the outside courts and that overall, the speed is

It earned England a 2-1 victory that had looked unlikely when Rashford’s mistake allowed Slovakia to take a shock third-minute lead at Wembley in the Group F World Cup qualifier. England now look set to qualify for next year’s finals in Russia and Rashford, who is also hoping to fill Rooney’s boots at Old Trafford after his return to boyhood club Everton, will surely be a major part of manager Gareth Southgate’s plans. “He is so mature,” Southgate, whose decision to start Rashford rather than Raheem Sterling was vindicated, told reporters. “The start surprised me.
