Epic screams are heard, but the most entertainingly bloodcurdling comes from Oprah Winfrey. And what would August be without a wedding? Brangelina finally ties the knot, at a small ceremony on their French estate. A very sad note to the month: The death of Robin Williams, whose manic energy graced screens big and small, leaves a gaping hole in the cultural landscape. SEPTEMBER:
Let’s turn to sports: It’s World Cup time, and who says America doesn’t love soccer? People are glued to their TVs, iPads, phones and other devices for the U.S. games, and a hero is born: Tim Howard, the U.S. goalie, who even in a 2-1 defeat to Belgium makes a record-setting 16 saves.
Back to weddings — and in this year of celebrity knot-tying, nothing is bigger than the lavish Venice festivities surrounding the nuptials of the bachelor who said he’d never marry again, George Clooney, and British human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin. Think traffic jams of paparazzi on gondolas. This isn’t even the only Hollywood celebrity wedding in Italy this month — Neil Patrick Harris, next year’s Oscar host, marries partner David Burtka. Sadly, the world loses deliciously tart-tongued Joan Rivers, a trailblazer for women in comedy.

Suddenly it’s the only thing anyone in Hollywood is talking about: The devastating Sony hacking scandal. After several weeks of embarrassing disclosures in hacked emails, the focus turns sharply in mid-December to genuine fear, as hackers threaten violence and mayhem at theaters showing “The Interview,” the Seth Rogen-James Franco film depicting the fictional assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Theater chains pull out, and Sony finally shelves the movie. The fallout is still developing, but it’s clearly a sober ending to a dramatic year for the entertainment industry.

At 11:07 a.m. local time, a C-130 aircraft of the Indonesian Air Force spotted another metal object floating in the water. The Hercules aircraft also spotted a shadow, presumably resembling the shape of an aircraft submerged in water. Soelistyo stated that at 1:50 p.m.

Relatives of passengers on AirAsia flight QZ8501 began crying hysterically and fainting Tuesday as Indonesian television footage showed a body floating in the sea during aerial searches for the plane. At least two distraught family members were carried out on stretchers from the room where they had been waiting for news in Surabaya, Indonesia’s second largest city -- the take-off point for the aircraft that disappeared during a storm on Sunday. “My heart will be totally crushed if it’s true. I will lose a son,” 60-year-old Dwijanto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told AFP. More than 48 hours after the Airbus A320-200 lost contact carrying 162 people to Singapore, aerial searchers spotted items in the Java Sea which officials said were from the plane. Soon after they began recovering dozens of bodies. As the first body was shown floating in the water on rolling television news, relatives burst into tears and hugged one another amid cries for more ambulances, said an AFP reporter at the scene. One man covered his face and had to be held up by two other men before he fainted and was taken out by stretcher. Another woman was
screaming and crying as she was supported by the mayor of Surabaya. A female AirAsia officer shouted at the television media for showing footage of a floating body, while about 200 journalists were barred from the room holding the families, the windows of which were boarded up. “Is it possible for you not to show a picture of the dead? Please do not show a picture of a dead body,” said the officer. “That’s crazy.” Munif, a 50-year-old whose younger brother Siti Rahmah was on the plane, said he had been trying hard to keep the other families calm. “But the atmosphere was very different after the footage of a dead body was shown. Families became hysterical,” he said. “Because everyone was wailing and yelling, I couldn’t deal with it so I decided to leave the room.” In Malaysia, families of those on the MH370 flight that went missing without a trace in March hoped those lost in the latest tragedy could at least have a proper burial. “The families can now have a closure and have a peace of mind which I am dying for,” said Selamat Omar, whose 29-yearold son was on the Malaysia Airlines plane. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Tiny ‘life detector’ could sense alien movement
MIAMI - European researchers said Monday they have devised the first tiny motion detector that could help find microscopic life forms on distant planets. Until now, scientists have tried to find signs of extraterrestrial life by listening for sounds that might be emitted from an alien world, by scanning the skies with potent telescopes and by sending robotic probes and rovers to analyze the chemical fingerprint of samples from comets and planets. But researchers in Switzerland and Belgium were interested in a new method. Taking advantage of movement, which they call “a
universal signature of life,” they would aim to sense on a nanolevel the tiny motions that all life forms make. They began to explore the possibility of searching for life with a sensor attuned to those nanoscale vibrations in microscopic organisms such as bacteria and yeast. “The nanomotion detector allows studying life from a new perspective: life is movement,” said Giovanni Longo, lead author
of the paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a peer-reviewed US journal. “This means that the nanomotion detector can detect any small movement of living systems and deliver a complementary point of view in the search for life,” he told AFP via email from Switzerland. Longo, a scientist at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, and colleagues at Vlaams Instituut voor Biotechnologie in
Belgium devised an instrument that is smaller than a millimeter -- just a few hundred microns in length -- that can sense the smallest nanoscale movements. They tested it on a variety of living things, including E coli, yeast, as well as human, plant and mice cells in the lab. In all cases, when living organisms were placed near the sensor, they “produced an increase in the amplitude of the measured fluctuations,” said the study. Longo and colleagues also scooped up soil and water from the grounds near their Swiss lab and
found that the sensor could detect tiny life there, too. Researchers found they could manipulate the movements of the life forms by adding nutrients which the cells would consume, or adding chemicals that would kill them, making the motion stop. “The detection system can be used as a simple, extremely sensitive, and weight-efficient ‘life detector,’” the study said. Longo said a prototype would cost less than $10,000, would use very little battery power and could be contained in a 20 by 20 centimeter (eight inch) box. (afp)
NYC subways slowly upgrading from 1930s-era technology
NEW YORK — New York City’s subways — the biggest U.S. mass transit network — serve more than 6 million daily riders who depend largely on a signal system that dates back to the Great Depression of the 1930s. Antiquated electro-mechanics with thousands of moving parts are still critical to operations. Dispatchers still monitor most trains from 24-hour underground “towers,” and they still put pencil to paper to track their progress. That eight-decade-old system is slowly being replaced by 21st-century digital technology that allows up to twice as many trains to safely travel closer together. But there’s a big caveat: It could take at least 20 years for the city’s 700 miles (1,127 kilometers) of tracks to be fully computerized. Of the subway system’s almost two dozen major lines, just one, the L linking Manhattan and Brooklyn, currently operates on new, computerized, automated signals. And the modernization of the No. 7 line from Manhattan to Queens has begun, to be completed by 2017. So, for at least the foreseeable future, New York subway riders can expect the snags, weekend shutdowns and overcrowding they have become accustomed to. “We’re at the physical limits of what the original technology can carry,” acknowledges Adam Lisberg, spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority that New York City Transit’s subways. But he says safety is not being sacrificed. “This stuff is old, but it works — it works really well,” he says, his voice rising above the roar of a 400-ton train passing through a Greenwich Village station. Much of New York’s subways continue to operate with the equipment from the 1930s, kept running by a maintenance team that’s forced to fabricate replacement parts long out of production. Wynton Habersham, the MTA’s chief of signals and track operations, recently led an

A massive cabinet is arrayed with levers to move switches through a warren of electrical connections to relays that were cutting-edge technology at the same time as the Hindenburg airship. Hidden from straphangers, these are the guts of the urban transit network that guide subway traffic through nearly 500 stations. Behind a door off a platform on Manhattan’s West Side at 14th Street is the system’s single gleaming, high-tech operation. It allows about two dozen L trains to move each hour in both directions — compared to about 15 with the old mechanics — on a route that takes an average of 37 minutes. Amid peeling paint, rusty stairs and oldfashioned metal cabinets is a labyrinth of digitalized panels and switches that automatically relay signals in the tunnels, tracing both direction and speed without human help. In case of an emergency, however, the computerized controls can be manually overridden by operators in the cab of each train. The updating has allowed more cars to be added to the L line, which has become one of the city’s most crowded thanks to growth in Brooklyn’s hip Williamsburg neighborhood. Europe has long been ahead of the United States, with several cities including London and Paris operating mass transit rails equipped with updated signals. “The New York system is big and a finite amount of money was available, for decades,” concludes engineer Nabil Ghaly, the MTA’s chief signal engineer until he retired in 2007. “We have to catch up.”

Supported by dozens of artists, the art studio presented fragmentary show entitled Hening or Silence. It told the story about an angel from heaven that would come down to balance the earth. According to the Manager of the Bona Alit Art Studio, Ngurah Dwi, the presentation this time was quite interesting to fill in the cultural art event entitled ‘Timeless Indonesia Festival (TIF) 2014. “We use this opportunity to provide a space of the art for travelers and local people in order to get a spectacular performance,” he said. AMLAPURA - The increasing maintenance cost of the Sukasada Park urges the management to increase the price of admission ticket. The increase variedly reaches 75 percent which only applies to foreign travelers. Meanwhile, the price of admission ticket for domestic travelers remains the same, namely IDR 10,000. YANGON, Myanmar — Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi said Tuesday it is too early for her party to decide whether it will participate in 2015 elections because it depends on whether the constitution and election laws are amended. She noted that her National League for Democracy party boycotted 2010 polls because it believed the legal conditions were unacceptable. It participated in 2012 by-elections after some rules were amended, and won 43 of the 44 seats it contested. The 2010 election was widely seen as rigged in favor of the military and its allies but gave Myanmar an elected, nominally civilian, government for the first time since a 1962 coup overthrew parliamentary democracy. “We all have to work together to make sure that the elections are inclusive, that they are transparent, that they are free and fair and that they are held on time as scheduled,” Suu Kyi told a year-end news conference. “We’ve got to make sure that what we want will come about.”

To that end, his party would continue to patrol until the New Year’s Day. According to him, on welcoming the New Year many people would make a program and booze. Iwan Suparta asserted that his party would soon dismiss the people’s activity of welcoming the New Year carried out in the streets and public facilities. “We are not going to make leeway even though by the New Year. Exactly, there is no tolerance. If we find people boozing in the streets, they will be immediately dismissed,” he explained. The assertiveness would not only be imposed on the people, but also on the agencies including the civil servants in the Karangasem County. They should equally obey the rules and did not give bad example to community. “We have appealed when our personnel are found boozing in the streets they will be dealing with me. Mumbai suspect rearrested in Pakistan ISLAMABAD — Pakistani police have rearrested the main suspect in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, officials said Tuesday, quashing expectations that he might soon be freed. Zaki-ur-Rahman Lakhvi is one of seven suspects being tried by Pakistan in connection with the attacks, which killed 166 people and seriously damaged relations between longtime rivals Pakistan and India. After a judge on Dec. 18 granted him bail there had been concerns that he would be freed, possibly as early as Tuesday. But Tuesday morning police arrested him on another case, his lawyer Rizwan Abbasi said. Lakhvi appeared in court in Islamabad amid tight security. He told an Associated Press reporter that he accepted whatever God intended for him. Police inspector Mohammed Arshad told the court that someone had filed a complaint at a police station on the Islamabad outskirts saying that Lakhvi had abducted his brother-in-law to wage “jihad” six and a half years ago. The judge granted a police request for time to investigate the accusation, extending Lakhvi’s detention for two days.
A lawyer for Lakhvi questioned why the complaint had only become known when it appeared that Lakhvi would be let go on bail. Rizwan Abbasi called it a tactic to “....deprive my client of the fundamental right of liberty.” The legal maneuverings Tuesday stem from the decision on Dec. 18 by the judge in an anti-terrorism court to grant him bail, citing a lack of evidence. That announcement was extremely embarrassing to the government, which had vowed to crack down on militancy following the Peshawar school attack days earlier. It provoked a harsh condemnation from India, which has repeatedly said Pakistan is not doing enough in the case. In the wake of the bail announcement Pakistani legal authorities tried various mechanisms to keep Lakhvi behind bars, but in a hearing on Monday, a judge said that there were no grounds to prolong the detention and that the only thing standing between him and freedom was posting bail. Pakistani television reported that senior officials met late Monday at the Interior Ministry to discuss the case. Lakhvi was rearrested the following morning.(ap)

US predicts to power the world economy in 2015
WASHINGTON — The United States is back, and ready to drive global growth in 2015. After long struggling to claw its way out of the Great Recession, the world’s biggest economy is on an extended win streak that is edging it closer to full health. But the new year doesn’t look quite so bright in other major countries. China is slowing as it transitions from investment to consumption. Japan has slid into a recession. Russia appears headed for one. Europe is barely growing. Six years after its financial system nearly sank and nearly that long since the recession ended, the United States is expected to grow in 2015 at its fastest pace in a decade. Its expansion from July through September — a 5 percent annual rate — was the swiftest for any quarter since 2003.
That pace will likely ease a bit. Still, the economy is expected to expand 3.1 percent next year, according to a survey by the National Association for Business Economics. It would be the first year of 3 percent growth since 2005. The acceleration of U.S. growth is a key reason the global economy is also expected to grow faster, at about 3 percent, up from 2.5 percent in 2014, according to economists at JPMorgan Chase and IHS Global Insight.

Plunging oil prices are a big reason for the optimism. Prices have been cut roughly in half since summer. In some areas of the country, gasoline prices have slipped below $2 a gallon. The drop, along with more fuel-efficient cars, will save the average U.S. household $550 on gas next year, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. That means consumers have more to spend on items like cars, furniture and appliances. What’s more, Americans’ finances are in firmer shape. Job growth is accelerating. Businesses are investing in buildings and software, and home building is expected to pick up. Lower oil prices will also help Europe and Japan, and the global economy should expand faster than it did this year, economists say. But the divergence between the United States and most of the rest of the world is striking and carries some risks. Big exporters, from China to Germany to Japan, will depend heavily on a recovering U.S. to boost their economies. A pickup in global growth “is highly dependent on the assumption that the U.S. economy continues to improve,” said Douglas Porter, chief economist at BMO Capital Markets. “If that doesn’t play out, there’s not much left for the global economy to fall back on. Even if the U.S. economy does strengthen further, the rest of the world could struggle. For one thing, faster growth will likely lead the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates in 2015, which could draw
more investment from overseas. The inflow of capital would raise the dollar’s value and potentially cause destabilizing drops in other currencies. Governments and businesses overseas that borrowed in dollars would find it harder to repay those debts. The hot economies of the last decade — the emerging markets of Brazil, Russia, India and China collectively known as the “BRICs” — will likely grow in 2015 at their slowest pace in six years, according to Oxford Economics, a forecasting firm. Falling oil and commodity prices have smacked Brazil and Russia particularly hard. China may expand 6.5 percent or more. Yet that’s a far cry from the nearly double-digit growth it enjoyed for decades. Europe and Japan will be lucky to expand even 1 percent. The gap between the U.S. and the rest of the world reflects a fundamental trait of the U.S. economy: It’s more insulated from the rest of the world’s ups and downs than other major economies are. Exports account for just 14 percent of U.S. output, the smallest share among the 34 mostly rich members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. JAKARTA - The crash of AirAsia Flight QZ8501 has raised concerns over Indonesia’s safety record, but aviation analysts say the country has made huge advances since the days when all of its airlines were banned from flying to Europe. The air travel industry in the sprawling archipelago is booming, with domestic passengers growing nearly five-fold over the past decade and airlines scoring billion-dollar deals with foreign plane makers. Until the Airbus A320-200 plunged into the sea on Sunday carrying 162 people, Indonesia appeared to be shedding its repu-
tation for plane crashes, which had led the European Union in 2007 to ban all 51 Indonesian airlines from flying to the bloc. “Now we can count accidents with our hands, a stark contrast to the accidents we had in 2007 and the years prior to that,” said Dudi Sudibyo, a senior editor of aviation magazine Angkasa. The AirAsia flight, which was travelling from the Indonesian city Surabaya to Singapore when it lost contact during stormy weather, looks set to be country’s only deadly one in 2014, Sudibyo told AFP. Gerry Soejatman, an independent aviation analyst, said Indonesia had 0.18 fatal accidents per one million passengers in 2007, which had dropped to less than half that in 2011.
“The EU ban slapped Indonesia on the face, but because of that Indonesia then improved the safety standards,” he said. Accidents in 2007 included an Adam Air plane plunging into the sea off Sulawesi island on New Year’s Day, killing all 102 people on board. That airline was later banned from flying. In March 2007, a jet with flag carrier Garuda Indonesia burst into flames on landing in the province of Central Java, killing 21 people. In more recent incidents, a Lion Air plane missed the runway as it came in to land in Bali in April last year, slamming into the sea and splitting in two. Dozens of the 108 people on board were injured, but there were no fatalities. Later in 2013, a Lion Air jet crashed into a cow and skidded off the runway as it came into land on Sulawesi island. Chappy Hakim, a former air force chief, said the room for improvement in safety standards was still huge. “In 2007 we were audited and we did not comply on a hundred things and I (still) don’t think we have complied to the international standards,” he said, adding that the country was still short of inspectors. Falling oil prices should benefit people in Europe, Japan and China, all of which import oil. President orders immediate checks on aircraft conditions
JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo has ordered Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan to conduct immediate checks on the conditions of aircraft operating in Indonesia and the implementation of all procedures of the International Civil Aviation Organization. “The immediate checks ordered are part of preventive and improvement measures,” he said. 2 Albanian sailors killed during ferry operation
TIRANA, Albania — Two Albanian tugboat sailors died Tuesday during operations to secure a Greek ferry adrift for three days since a fire broke out on a car deck, with 10 people killed in the ensuing chaos. The sailors were apparently hit by a line that they had been trying to attach to the crippled, fire-blackened Norman Atlantic, said Dionis Dulaj, the police spokesman in the Albanian port town of Vlore, closest to where the 186-meter (610-foot) -long ferry has been drifting. Defense Ministry spokeswoman Edlira Prendi announced the deaths. One man had quickly been confirmed dead while a medical team had worked on the second but could not save him. A Dutch salvage company, Rotterdam-based Smit Salvage, was overseeing the operations to secure the Norman Atlantic after completion Monday of the rescue of 427 people, including 56 crew. One lifeboat was deployed, but most of those on the ferry were transported by helicopters to safety in an all-night operation amid
high winds and pelting rains. Martijn Schuttevaer, a spokesman for Smit’s parent company Royal Boskalis Smit, said one line was connected by early Tuesday and that the priority was to get a heavier tow line connection, aided by the arrival of larger tugs. It was not clear if that was the operation underway when the Albanian sailors were struck. Schuttevaer said crews were also going through the vessel to extinguish any remaining fire. “There is still smoke,” he said. No decision has yet been made on where to bring the vessel. The
Italian Navy, meanwhile, says the search for possible missing passengers from the Greek ferry fire is continuing. Authorities say discrepancies in the ferry’s manifest make it impossible to know how many people, if any, may still be missing. A ship carrying 39 survivors was headed to the southern Italian port of Manfredonia, but a town official told Sky TG24 that it may be diverted further north due to the weather. Putin foe Alexei Navalny found guilty of fraud MOSCOW — Alexei Navalny, the anti-corruption campaigner who is a leading foe of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was found guilty of fraud and given a suspended sentence of three and a half years on Tuesday, while his brother was sent to prison. The verdict was scheduled for next month, but the court session was abruptly moved forward to the day before New Year’s Eve, the main holiday in Russia, leading to speculation that authorities wanted to head off protests. More than 30,000 had previously signed up on Facebook to rally outside the Kremlin to protest what they called an unlawful trial. Navalny and his younger brother Oleg were convicted of defrauding a French cosmetics company and given the same sentence as each other, but Oleg’s was not suspended. The court also fined each of them 500,000 rubles (about $8,800) and ordered them to pay some 4 million rubles ($77,000) in damages. Oleg Navalny, the father of two small children and a former executive of the state-owned postal service, has never played a role in the Russian opposition movement and his imprisonment could echo the Soviet-era practice of punishing the relatives of inconvenient people. “Aren’t you ashamed of what you’re doing? You want to punish me even harder?” Alexei Navalny shouted out as Judge Yelena Korobchenko handed down the sentence for his brother. Alexei briefly entered the metal cage that his brother was put into after the verdict and appeared to be holding back tears. “This is the most disgusting and vile of all possible verdicts,” Alexei Navalny said outside the court. “The government isn’t just trying to jail its political opponents — we’re used to it, we’re aware that they’re doing it — but this time they’re destroying and torturing the families of the people who oppose them,” he said, and called for a protest Tuesday evening.
The suspended sentence means that it could be converted into a prison term at any moment if Alexei Navalny offends again, although this will be still up to the court to decide. Navalny has been under house arrest since February and his lawyer Vadim Kobzev told The Associated Press that he will remain there until all appeals are exhausted, which could take months. Moscow-based political analyst Masha Lipman said the verdict is a message to the entire Russian opposition: “All of you guys are at our mercy.” Lipman said it was clear the Kremlin had decided not to make a martyr out of Navalny, with the aim “not to consolidate the opposition, but to demoralize and intimidate it.” The trial seemed to be full of inconsistencies and loopholes. McLaren racing director Eric Boullier reckons the close battle between McLaren and Force India in the 2014 constructors’ championship acted as a “wake-up call” for his Formula 1 team. The Woking-based F1 squad led the standings after a double podium in Australia, but fell behind Force India when it posted a double retirement in April’s Bahrain Grand Prix. It took McLaren until August’s Belgian GP to get back ahead again, before eventually rounding out the season a clear fifth, and Boullier admitted trailing Force India for so long had forced his team to raise its game. “Being behind Force India was a concern and a wake-up call for everybody,” Boullier told AUTOSPORT. “We were not exactly on the same playing field as Mercedes, but we can’t complain as we had the best engine. “It’s easier when you know your downforce and windtunnel is not working [and] you’ve found the problem with your car. “When it’s more about culture, process and leadership then it’s less easy to find the problem. “It takes a lot of hard work to understand what’s wrong and how to bring everybody back together. “I think we are there now, so we are more efficient and I think everyone at McLaren understands what has happened, which is important so we do not repeat the same mistakes.” Boullier has spent most of his first season in Woking restructuring the technical team at McLaren, and the Frenchman said the squad’s constant improvement of the MP4-29 across the campaign vindicated these changes as it gets set to embark on a new era with works engine supplier Honda. “We got on the podium in Australia, but we knew looking at the numbers we were not competitive and we were lucky to get there,” Boullier added. “We were perhaps the sixth fastest team at the beginning of the year and now we are the third, which means we have improved. “My target by the end of the season was to have around a 95 per cent restructure at McLaren and that is done. “All targets have been reached and we can make the transition [to Honda engines]. “It’s not easy to manage as it’s a different car and different concept, and we have had new people join us, but we are on it. “We know where we want to go, so I think things look OK [for 2015].” (net)

McLaren racing director Eric Boullier reckons the close battle between McLaren and Force India in the 2014 constructors’ championship acted as a “wake-up call” for his Formula 1 team. The Woking-based F1 squad led the standings after a double podium in Australia, but fell behind Force India when it posted a double retirement in April’s Bahrain Grand Prix. It took McLaren until August’s Belgian GP to get back ahead again, before eventually rounding out the season a clear fifth, and Boullier admitted trailing Force India for so long had forced his team to raise its game. “Being behind Force India was a concern and a wake-up call for everybody,” Boullier told AUTOSPORT. “We were not exactly on the same playing field as Mercedes, but we can’t complain as we had the best engine. “It’s easier when you know your downforce and windtunnel is not working [and] you’ve found the problem with your car. “When it’s more about culture, process and leadership then it’s less easy to find the problem. “It takes a lot of hard work to understand what’s wrong and how to bring everybody back together. “I think we are there now, so we are more efficient and I think everyone at McLaren understands what has happened, which is important so we do not repeat the same mistakes.” Boullier has spent most of his first season in Woking restructuring the technical team at McLaren, and the Frenchman said the squad’s constant improvement of the MP4-29 across the campaign vindicated these changes as it gets set to embark on a new era with works engine supplier Honda. “We got on the podium in Australia, but we knew looking at the numbers we were not competitive and we were lucky to get there,” Boullier added. “We were perhaps the sixth fastest team at the beginning of the year and now we are the third, which means we have improved. “My target by the end of the season was to have around a 95 per cent restructure at McLaren and that is done. “All targets have been reached and we can make the transition [to Honda engines]. “It’s not easy to manage as it’s a different car and different concept, and we have had new people join us, but we are on it. “We know where we want to go, so I think things look OK [for 2015].” (net)

2 Albanian sailors killed during ferry operation
TIRANA, Albania — Two Albanian tugboat sailors died Tuesday during operations to secure a Greek ferry adrift for three days since a fire broke out on a car deck, with 10 people killed in the ensuing chaos. The sailors were apparently hit by a line that they had been trying to attach to the crippled, fire-blackened Norman Atlantic, said Dionis Dulaj, the police spokesman in the Albanian port town of Vlore, closest to where the 186-meter (610-foot) -long ferry has been drifting. Defense Ministry spokeswoman Edlira Prendi announced the deaths. One man had quickly been confirmed dead while a medical team had worked on the second but could not save him. A Dutch salvage company, Rotterdam-based Smit Salvage, was overseeing the operations to secure the Norman Atlantic after completion Monday of the rescue of 427 people, including 56 crew. One lifeboat was deployed, but most of those on the ferry were transported by helicopters to safety in an all-night operation amid
high winds and pelting rains. Martijn Schuttevaer, a spokesman for Smit’s parent company Royal Boskalis Smit, said one line was connected by early Tuesday and that the priority was to get a heavier tow line connection, aided by the arrival of larger tugs. It was not clear if that was the operation underway when the Albanian sailors were struck. Schuttevaer said crews were also going through the vessel to extinguish any remaining fire. “There is still smoke,” he said. No decision has yet been made on where to bring the vessel. The
Italian Navy, meanwhile, says the search for possible missing passengers from the Greek ferry fire is continuing. Authorities say discrepancies in the ferry’s manifest make it impossible to know how many people, if any, may still be missing. Putin foe Alexei Navalny found guilty of fraud MOSCOW — Alexei Navalny, the anti-corruption campaigner who is a leading foe of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was found guilty of fraud and given a suspended sentence of three and a half years on Tuesday, while his brother was sent to prison. The verdict was scheduled for next month, but the court session was abruptly moved forward to the day before New Year’s Eve, the main holiday in Russia, leading to speculation that authorities wanted to head off protests. More than 30,000 had previously signed up on Facebook to rally outside the Kremlin to protest what they called an unlawful trial. Navalny and his younger brother Oleg were convicted of defrauding a French cosmetics company and given the same sentence as each other, but Oleg’s was not suspended. The court also fined each of them 500,000 rubles (about $8,800) and ordered them to pay some 4 million rubles ($77,000) in damages. Oleg Navalny, the father of two small children and a former executive of the state-owned postal service, has never played a role in the Russian opposition movement and his imprisonment could echo the Soviet-era practice of punishing the relatives of inconvenient people. “Aren’t you ashamed of what you’re doing? You want to punish me even harder?” Alexei Navalny shouted out as Judge Yelena Korobchenko handed down the sentence for his brother. Alexei briefly entered the metal cage that his brother was put into after the verdict and appeared to be holding back tears. “This is the most disgusting and vile of all possible verdicts,” Alexei Navalny said outside the court. “The government isn’t just trying to jail its political opponents — we’re used to it, we’re aware that they’re doing it — but this time they’re destroying and torturing the families of the people who oppose them,” he said, and called for a protest Tuesday evening.
The suspended sentence means that it could be converted into a prison term at any moment if Alexei Navalny offends again, although this will be still up to the court to decide. Navalny has been under house arrest since February and his lawyer Vadim Kobzev told The Associated Press that he will remain there until all appeals are exhausted, which could take months. Moscow-based political analyst Masha Lipman said the verdict is a message to the entire Russian opposition: “All of you guys are at our mercy.” Lipman said it was clear the Kremlin had decided not to make a martyr out of Navalny, with the aim “not to consolidate the opposition, but to demoralize and intimidate it.” The trial seemed to be full of inconsistencies and loopholes. US predicts to power the world economy in 2015
WASHINGTON — The United States is back, and ready to drive global growth in 2015. After long struggling to claw its way out of the Great Recession, the world’s biggest economy is on an extended win streak that is edging it closer to full health. But the new year doesn’t look quite so bright in other major countries. China is slowing as it transitions from investment to consumption. Japan has slid into a recession. Russia appears headed for one. Europe is barely growing. Six years after its financial system nearly sank and nearly that long since the recession ended, the United States is expected to grow in 2015 at its fastest pace in a decade. Its expansion from July through September — a 5 percent annual rate — was the swiftest for any quarter since 2003.
That pace will likely ease a bit. Still, the economy is expected to expand 3.1 percent next year, according to a survey by the National Association for Business Economics. It would be the first year of 3 percent growth since 2005. The acceleration of U.S. growth is a key reason the global economy is also expected to grow faster, at about 3 percent, up from 2.5 percent in 2014, according to economists at JPMorgan Chase and IHS Global Insight.

Plunging oil prices are a big reason for the optimism. Prices have been cut roughly in half since summer. In some areas of the country, gasoline prices have slipped below $2 a gallon. The drop, along with more fuel-efficient cars, will save the average U.S. household $550 on gas next year, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. That means consumers have more to spend on items like cars, furniture and appliances. What’s more, Americans’ finances are in firmer shape. Job growth is accelerating. Businesses are investing in buildings and software, and home building is expected to pick up. Lower oil prices will also help Europe and Japan, and the global economy should expand faster than it did this year, economists say. But the divergence between the United States and most of the rest of the world is striking and carries some risks. Big exporters, from China to Germany to Japan, will depend heavily on a recovering U.S. to boost their economies. A pickup in global growth “is highly dependent on the assumption that the U.S. economy continues to improve,” said Douglas Porter, chief economist at BMO Capital Markets. “If that doesn’t play out, there’s not much left for the global economy to fall back on. Even if the U.S. economy does strengthen further, the rest of the world could struggle. For one thing, faster growth will likely lead the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates in 2015, which could draw
more investment from overseas. The inflow of capital would raise the dollar’s value and potentially cause destabilizing drops in other currencies. Governments and businesses overseas that borrowed in dollars would find it harder to repay those debts. The hot economies of the last decade — the emerging markets of Brazil, Russia, India and China collectively known as the “BRICs” — will likely grow in 2015 at their slowest pace in six years, according to Oxford Economics, a forecasting firm. Falling oil and commodity prices have smacked Brazil and Russia particularly hard. China may expand 6.5 percent or more. Yet that’s a far cry from the nearly double-digit growth it enjoyed for decades. Europe and Japan will be lucky to expand even 1 percent. The gap between the U.S. and the rest of the world reflects a fundamental trait of the U.S. economy: It’s more insulated from the rest of the world’s ups and downs than other major economies are. Exports account for just 14 percent of U.S. output, the smallest share among the 34 mostly rich members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. One U.S. company largely protected from overseas trends is Globe Specialty Metals, a Miamibased producer of silicon metals that draws 90 percent of its revenue from North America. In more recent incidents, a Lion Air plane missed the runway as it came in to land in Bali in April last year, slamming into the sea and splitting in two. Dozens of the 108 people on board were injured, but there were no fatalities. Later in 2013, a Lion Air jet crashed into a cow and skidded off the runway as it came into land on Sulawesi island. Chappy Hakim, a former air force chief, said the room for improvement in safety standards was still huge. “In 2007 we were audited and we did not comply on a hundred things and I (still) don’t think we have complied to the international standards,” he said, adding that the country was still short of inspectors. YANGON, Myanmar — Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi said Tuesday it is too early for her party to decide whether it will participate in 2015 elections because it depends on whether the constitution and election laws are amended. She noted that her National League for Democracy party boycotted 2010 polls because it believed the legal conditions were unacceptable. It participated in 2012 by-elections after some rules were amended, and won 43 of the 44 seats it contested. The 2010 election was widely seen as rigged in favor of the military and its allies but gave Myanmar an elected, nominally civilian, government for the first time since a 1962 coup overthrew parliamentary democracy. “We all have to work together to make sure that the elections are inclusive, that they are transparent, that they are free and fair and that they are held on time as scheduled,” Suu Kyi told a year-end news conference. “We’ve got to make sure that what we want will come about.”

Mumbai suspect rearrested in Pakistan ISLAMABAD — Pakistani police have rearrested the main suspect in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, officials said Tuesday, quashing expectations that he might soon be freed. Zaki-ur-Rahman Lakhvi is one of seven suspects being tried by Pakistan in connection with the attacks, which killed 166 people and seriously damaged relations between longtime rivals Pakistan and India. After a judge on Dec. 18 granted him bail there had been concerns that he would be freed, possibly as early as Tuesday. But Tuesday morning police arrested him on another case, his lawyer Rizwan Abbasi said. Lakhvi appeared in court in Islamabad amid tight security. He told an Associated Press reporter that he accepted whatever God intended for him. Police inspector Mohammed Arshad told the court that someone had filed a complaint at a police station on the Islamabad outskirts saying that Lakhvi had abducted his brother-in-law to wage “jihad” six and a half years ago. The judge granted a police request for time to investigate the accusation, extending Lakhvi’s detention for two days.
A lawyer for Lakhvi questioned why the complaint had only become known when it appeared that Lakhvi would be let go on bail. Rizwan Abbasi called it a tactic to “....deprive my client of the fundamental right of liberty.” The legal maneuverings Tuesday stem from the decision on Dec. 18 by the judge in an anti-terrorism court to grant him bail, citing a lack of evidence. That announcement was extremely embarrassing to the government, which had vowed to crack down on militancy following the Peshawar school attack days earlier. It provoked a harsh condemnation from India, which has repeatedly said Pakistan is not doing enough in the case. In the wake of the bail announcement Pakistani legal authorities tried various mechanisms to keep Lakhvi behind bars, but in a hearing on Monday, a judge said that there were no grounds to prolong the detention and that the only thing standing between him and freedom was posting bail. Pakistani television reported that senior officials met late Monday at the Interior Ministry to discuss the case. Lakhvi was rearrested the following morning.(ap)

Tiny ‘life detector’ could sense alien movement
MIAMI - European researchers said Monday they have devised the first tiny motion detector that could help find microscopic life forms on distant planets. Until now, scientists have tried to find signs of extraterrestrial life by listening for sounds that might be emitted from an alien world, by scanning the skies with potent telescopes and by sending robotic probes and rovers to analyze the chemical fingerprint of samples from comets and planets. But researchers in Switzerland and Belgium were interested in a new method. Taking advantage of movement, which they call “a
universal signature of life,” they would aim to sense on a nanolevel the tiny motions that all life forms make. They began to explore the possibility of searching for life with a sensor attuned to those nanoscale vibrations in microscopic organisms such as bacteria and yeast. “The nanomotion detector allows studying life from a new perspective: life is movement,” said Giovanni Longo, lead author
of the paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a peer-reviewed US journal. “This means that the nanomotion detector can detect any small movement of living systems and deliver a complementary point of view in the search for life,” he told AFP via email from Switzerland. Longo, a scientist at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, and colleagues at Vlaams Instituut voor Biotechnologie in
Belgium devised an instrument that is smaller than a millimeter -- just a few hundred microns in length -- that can sense the smallest nanoscale movements. They tested it on a variety of living things, including E coli, yeast, as well as human, plant and mice cells in the lab. In all cases, when living organisms were placed near the sensor, they “produced an increase in the amplitude of the measured fluctuations,” said the study. Longo and colleagues also scooped up soil and water from the grounds near their Swiss lab and
found that the sensor could detect tiny life there, too. Researchers found they could manipulate the movements of the life forms by adding nutrients which the cells would consume, or adding chemicals that would kill them, making the motion stop. “The detection system can be used as a simple, extremely sensitive, and weight-efficient ‘life detector,’” the study said. Longo said a prototype would cost less than $10,000, would use very little battery power and could be contained in a 20 by 20 centimeter (eight inch) box. (afp)
NYC subways slowly upgrading from 1930s-era technology
NEW YORK — New York City’s subways — the biggest U.S. mass transit network — serve more than 6 million daily riders who depend largely on a signal system that dates back to the Great Depression of the 1930s. Antiquated electro-mechanics with thousands of moving parts are still critical to operations. Dispatchers still monitor most trains from 24-hour underground “towers,” and they still put pencil to paper to track their progress. That eight-decade-old system is slowly being replaced by 21st-century digital technology that allows up to twice as many trains to safely travel closer together. But there’s a big caveat: It could take at least 20 years for the city’s 700 miles (1,127 kilometers) of tracks to be fully computerized. Of the subway system’s almost two dozen major lines, just one, the L linking Manhattan and Brooklyn, currently operates on new, computerized, automated signals. And the modernization of the No. 7 line from Manhattan to Queens has begun, to be completed by 2017. So, for at least the foreseeable future, New York subway riders can expect the snags, weekend shutdowns and overcrowding they have become accustomed to. “We’re at the physical limits of what the original technology can carry,” acknowledges Adam Lisberg, spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority that New York City Transit’s subways. But he says safety is not being sacrificed. “This stuff is old, but it works — it works really well,” he says, his voice rising above the roar of a 400-ton train passing through a Greenwich Village station. Much of New York’s subways continue to operate with the equipment from the 1930s, kept running by a maintenance team that’s forced to fabricate replacement parts long out of production. Wynton Habersham, the MTA’s chief of signals and track operations, recently led an
Associated Press reporter and photographer on a walking tour through some of the 22 control “towers” — as the dispatcher spaces are called, though they’re buried deep beneath the streets. In the cramped, worn-out Greenwich Village tower, MTA workers monitor light boards that show train locations and movement. The dispatchers answer phone calls and listen to two-way radio reports while keeping an eye on each train’s progress. A massive cabinet is arrayed with levers to move switches through a warren of electrical connections to relays that were cutting-edge technology at the same time as the Hindenburg airship. Hidden from straphangers, these are the guts of the urban transit network that guide subway traffic through nearly 500 stations. Behind a door off a platform on Manhattan’s West Side at 14th Street is the system’s single gleaming, high-tech operation. It allows about two dozen L trains to move each hour in both directions — compared to about 15 with the old mechanics — on a route that takes an average of 37 minutes. Amid peeling paint, rusty stairs and oldfashioned metal cabinets is a labyrinth of digitalized panels and switches that automatically relay signals in the tunnels, tracing both direction and speed without human help. In case of an emergency, however, the computerized controls can be manually overridden by operators in the cab of each train. The updating has allowed more cars to be added to the L line, which has become one of the city’s most crowded thanks to growth in Brooklyn’s hip Williamsburg neighborhood. Europe has long been ahead of the United States, with several cities including London and Paris operating mass transit rails equipped with updated signals. “The New York system is big and a finite amount of money was available, for decades,” concludes engineer Nabil Ghaly, the MTA’s chief signal engineer until he retired in 2007. “We have to catch up.”

Speaking about Ubud makes the handsome man look sparkling. It’s natural. Although he is still relatively young, Aditya Pande has been actively promoting Ubud. Since he was entrusted to take the responsibilities as Chairman of the Ubud Hotels Association (UHA), he and his team aggressively recovered the Bali tourism after the bombings in 2002 and 2005. Aditya Pande is confident the existence of the UHA as non-profit organization engaging in the services of accommodation can perform the vision and mission to restore and preserve the environment, culture and the art. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Relatives of passengers on AirAsia flight QZ8501 began crying hysterically and fainting Tuesday as Indonesian television footage showed a body floating in the sea during aerial searches for the plane. At least two distraught family members were carried out on stretchers from the room where they had been waiting for news in Surabaya, Indonesia’s second largest city -- the take-off point for the aircraft that disappeared during a storm on Sunday. “My heart will be totally crushed if it’s true. I will lose a son,” 60-year-old Dwijanto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told AFP. More than 48 hours after the Airbus A320-200 lost contact carrying 162 people to Singapore, aerial searchers spotted items in the Java Sea which officials said were from the plane. Soon after they began recovering dozens of bodies. As the first body was shown floating in the water on rolling television news, relatives burst into tears and hugged one another amid cries for more ambulances, said an AFP reporter at the scene. One man covered his face and had to be held up by two other men before he fainted and was taken out by stretcher. Another woman was
screaming and crying as she was supported by the mayor of Surabaya. A female AirAsia officer shouted at the television media for showing footage of a floating body, while about 200 journalists were barred from the room holding the families, the windows of which were boarded up. “Is it possible for you not to show a picture of the dead? Please do not show a picture of a dead body,” said the officer. “That’s crazy.” Munif, a 50-year-old whose younger brother Siti Rahmah was on the plane, said he had been trying hard to keep the other families calm. “But the atmosphere was very different after the footage of a dead body was shown. Families became hysterical,” he said. “Because everyone was wailing and yelling, I couldn’t deal with it so I decided to leave the room.” In Malaysia, families of those on the MH370 flight that went missing without a trace in March hoped those lost in the latest tragedy could at least have a proper burial. “The families can now have a closure and have a peace of mind which I am dying for,” said Selamat Omar, whose 29-yearold son was on the Malaysia Airlines plane.
