The operator of Japan’s tsunami-crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant said Wednesday it feared nuclear fission had resumed within one of its reactors despite a shutdown. Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) said it had begun injecting water and boric acid into Reactor No. 2 at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, which began leaking radiation after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. “We cannot deny the possibility of a small nuclear fission reaction,” TEPCO spokesman Hiroki Kawamata said, adding that the injection was a precautionary measure. He said there was no fresh danger at the plant, as the reactor’s temperature and pressure, as well as radiation levels at monitoring posts, showed no substantial changes. Fission is the process by which an operating nuclear reactor produces power. The reactor automati-

cally shut down in the wake of the disaster but nuclear fuel is believed to have melted through its container onto the bottom of the outer vessel when the tsunami knocked out the plant’s cooling systems. The injection was ordered after preliminary analysis of gas samples from the reactor building showed the possible presence of xenon 133 and xenon 135, byproducts of a nuclear reaction. The two substances have short half-lives -- five days for xenon 133 and just nine hours for xenon 135 -- indicating that any nuclear fission was a recent phenomenon. The temperature at the reactor No. 2 had been brought to below 100 degrees centigrade (212 Fahrenheit), TEPCO said, one of the conditions for the utility to declare so-called “cold shutdown”. Technicians have been battling since the tsunami to achieve cold shutdown of the reactors, a stable condition in which temperatures drop and no reaction takes place.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. Pour in chicken stock and simmer over medium heat for approximately 1 hour. When cooked, there should be very little sauce left and the meat should be shiny and dark brown. If the meat becomes too dry during cooking, add a little chicken stock.

INGREDIENTS: 600 gr (1Ÿ lb) boneless pork leg or shoulder, cut in 1 cm (1/2in) cubes ½ cup basic spice paste 1 tsp salt 1 tsp black peppercorns, crushed 2 tbsp tamarind pulp, seeds and fibres removed vegetable oil for frying 1 meter (3ft) pork intestine or sausage casings PREPARATION: Combine pork meat with basic spice paste, salt, pepper and tamarind paste. Mix well for 5 minutes. Tie one end of pork intestines with string. Insert large round nozzle into pastry piping bag and fill it with the meat mixture. Place open end of intestine over nozzle of piping bag and fill intestine tightly. Tie end with string. Dry sausage for 8 hours on wire rack in oven at very low heat. Deep fry in oil over medium heat until golden brown. This dish is traditionally served with lawar (Vegetable Salad made from green beans) or with young jackfruits.

MANILA, Philippines — Singer Charice Pempengco of the hit TV show “Glee” appealed Wednesday for justice for her father, who was stabbed to death in her Philippine hometown, as police offered a reward and hunted for the suspect. Authorities were preparing murder charges and will distribute public photographs of a man they said was intoxicated when he became angry after 40-year-old construction worker Ricky Pempengco brushed against him, San Pedro town police chief Kirby Kraft said. Pempengco was buying cigarettes from a store late Monday when he was stabbed with an ice pick in the chest and back. The suspect fled the following morning after talking to his mother about the killing, Kraft said, adding they had at least two witnesses. LOS ANGELES — Lindsay Lohan returns to court Wednesday to learn whether a judge will agree with a prosecutor advocating that the actress be returned to jail for failing to complete a community service assignment at a women’s shelter. Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner revoked Lohan’s probation at a hearing nearly two weeks ago, but now must formally determine whether Lohan violated the terms of her sentence. The judge has asked prosecutors to calculate how long of a jail term the actress would

have to serve if she is formally found in violation of her probation for misdemeanor drunken driving and theft cases. Sautner, who is the fifth judge that Lohan has faced since her first arrest in 2007, has expressed exasperation with the actress and California’s budget-strapped jail system. “If jail meant something in the state of California now, maybe I’d put her in jail,” Sautner said at Lohan’s last court appearance. The Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office is advocating jail time for the actress, however spokesman Frank Mateljan declined to say Tuesday what sentence a prosecutor would seek. Lohan’s

spokesman, Steve Honig, declined comment before the hearing. The “Mean Girls” star has been reporting to the Los Angeles morgue regularly, which Sautner ordered her to do at the last court appearance. The judge had sentenced Lohan to serve 120 hours doing janitorial work at coroner’s office in April, but expressed hope that the actress would benefit from working three times that amount of hours at a women’s shelter. Lohan, 25, was terminated from the shelter program after failing to show up nine times at the center. She told her probation officer the assignment was not fulfilling, according to the

actress’ probation report. The actress’ morgue service has not been without drama — she was turned away the first day after showing up 40 minutes late. She has shown up early several times since then. Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter declined to characterize how Lohan’s service was progressing Tuesday. There are few, if any, untried punishment options if Sautner determines Lohan violated her orders. The former Disney star has been sent to jail, rehab, counseling and community service numerous times since being arrested twice for drunken driving in 2007.

WASHINGTON — For a world already weary of weather catastrophes, the latest warning from top climate scientists paints a grim future: More floods, more heat waves, more droughts and greater costs to deal with them. A draft summary of an international scientific report obtained by The Associated Press says the extremes caused by global warming could eventually grow so severe that some locations become “increasingly marginal as places to live.” The report from the Nobel Prizewinning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change marks a change in climate science, from focusing on subtle shifts in average temperatures to concentrating on the harder-to-analyze freak events that grab headlines, hurt economies and kill people. “The extremes are a really noticeable aspect of climate change,” said Jerry Meehl, senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. “I think people realize that the extremes are where we are going to see a lot of the impacts of climate change.” The final version of the report from a panel of leading climate scientists will be issued in a few weeks, after a meeting in Uganda. The draft says there is at least a 2-in-3 prob-

ability that climate extremes have already worsened because of manmade greenhouse gases. The most recent bizarre weather extreme, the pre-Halloween snowstorm that crippled parts of the Northeast last weekend, cannot be blamed on climate change and probably isn’t the type of storm that will increase with global warming, according to four meteorologists and climate scientists. Experts on extreme storms have focused more closely on the increasing number of super-heavy rainstorms, not snow, NASA climate scientist Gavin Schmidt said. SYDNEY - Five-times Olympic champion Ian Thorpe has warned Australians not to expect too much of him too soon as he prepares to make his return to competition in Singapore this week. I’m not here to make up the numbers and I want to succeed. “But Friday is just the beginning of racing again and whatever happens over the next few weeks, I’m here to swim and I won’t give up. London is my ultimate goal and win or lose here in Singapore, nothing changes long term.” Thorpe has shed 10 kilogrammes in body weight since his return and has just completed two weeks of training at altitude in Switzerland. “I’m coming off a pretty heavy training programme,” he told the paper. “My body feels good and it’s slowly dawning on me, I’m about to race again. “But at the same time, I’m nervous because I just don’t know what to expect.”

Ecclestone sure Lewis Hamilton will bounce back Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has complete faith that Lewis Hamilton will bounce back from his current difficulties - and thinks too much is being read into his run of collisions with Felipe Massa. On the back of another difficult weekend for Hamilton in India, where he was hit with a threeplace grid penalty for ignoring yellow flags and then crashed in the race with Massa, yet more questions have been asked about his mindset. However, Ecclestone thinks that Hamilton just needs a change of luck to get himself back on top form. “In life you go through ups and downs, and I think he is just going through a bit of a rough period generally in his life,” he said. “When life is easy you get lucky and everything goes well. When things start going wrong they start piling up and going more wrong. “He will get out of it. I spoke to him here in India. He is great. He will be okay.” Ecclestone has also played

down talk of a ‘feud’ between Hamilton and Massa, despite the pair having been involved in six controversial incidents this year. “It is not intentional, is it?” he explained. “These things happen. Maldonado to get grid penalty in Abu Dhabi PASTOR Maldonado will lose ten places on the grid for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as he will be forced to use his ninth engine of the season. His Williams team said on Tuesday that due to the damage his engine suffered in India

because of a gearbox failure, Maldonado will be unable to use that power unit anymore. Therefore Williams will forced to use a ninth engine for the Venezuelan in the following race in Abu Dhabi.

Teams are limited to eight engines per season, meaning Maldonado will be hit with a ten-place grid penalty in the Yas Marina event. Team-mate Rubens Barrichello will be using his eighth engine of the season in Abu Dhabi.
