The original video quickly went viral after being uploaded in early September, with Canadian singer Justin Bieber helping boost viewing numbers by labelling it his “favourite video on the internet” in a Twitter post on Thursday. “Yesterday my head was full of

Develop agribusiness, amend regulations
DEVELOPING the agriculture of Bali indeed takes time, commitment and capital support. In this context, synergy becomes strategic to do. Related to building synergy between the agricultural sector and tourism, Bali should revise its regulation. This view emerged during the Focus Group Discussion at Warung Bali Global Shankara, Sanur.

At least there are seven important components getting involved and should make synergy in developing the agriculture of Bali. Among them, the legislative, universities and R & D, players of agribusiness and agro-industry, farmers, non-governmental organizations, mass media as well as the executives. A good agricultural should indeed be built up through holistic synergies. Each component should not find it superior or more important than other components, but need one another.
This was stated by the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University, Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Rai. The FGD was attended by a number of academicians from the Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Udayana University and Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Bali. “Firstly, the legislative with various regulations having made, but in fact many of them do not work. For example, the Regional Bylaw (Perda) on Plant Cultivation System cannot even be applied,”
he said. Rai added that universities and R & D have produced competent graduates, academic products, international journals and innovations. In the 1960s, at the local hamlet was established a Joged bumbung art troupe with single dancer. They staged from one hamlet to another or ngelawang to entertain the public. Until one day, a member of the art troupe was bullied psychically when making a performance outside the Penyabangan hamlet. The dancers and gamelan players were suddenly stiff and unable to do any activities, including dancing and playing their gamelan instrument. Joged Pingit_3 “However, suddenly there was a miracle in the form of rays coming down and embedding in the headdress of the joged dancer. Finally, the gamelan players and dancers could instantly move again. Spectators were stunned at the time,” said chief of Kerta customary village, Made Witarjana, when accompanying the Joged Pingit art troupe of Penyabangan hamlet in the performance at the Bali Arts Festival 2016, Friday (Jun. 24). Joged Pingit_1 Witarjana believed that the miracle came because the troupe members always ask for approval to the Dalem Pingit Temple at local hamlet prior to making performance. Since that incident, the single joged dancer has been getting popular as joged pingit. Furthermore, the joged pingit was only performed at certain times because the pingit here means sacred. The original headdress of the joged pingit has even been put in a shrine at the Dalem Temple. Nevertheless, the joged pingit can still be staged for entertainment. However, the headdress used by the dancer is a duplicate of the original one. Before making performance, the audience of the BAF was also invited to see the procession of picking up the Dalem Deity on stage. “Necessarily each joged performance should indeed begin with a ritual. SINGARAJA - Declaration of the ‘Plastic Waste-Free Buleleng’ automatically encouraged the interest of residents to carry out an advanced waste processing into useful products. Other than increasingly more waste processing, the other positive effect is the emergence of creativity made by students in North Bali utilizing waste into a variety of clothing. To open competition in the space of creating fashion from waste, 45 students participated in the Buleleng Recycle Carnival (BRC) 2016, Saturday (Oct. 29). This first event initiated by the Buleleng Education Agency involved the students of kindergarten, elementary, junior and high school/vocational school and featured a variety of attires dominantly made from waste materials. The Head of the Buleleng Education Agency, Gede Suyasa, said that BRC is deliberately held to educate students so they care about the environment. Besides, the activity is meant to enliven the Youth Pledge Day 2016. Through this activity, the students have creative ideas in designing carnival fashion made from recycled materials. With such a creative space, the students in the region can participate in reducing environmental damage caused by plastic waste. “Similarly, this can serve a creative space to demonstrate the ability in the fashion field. Participants show off high vivacity, whereas they only had a month to make preparation for the design and visually realize it into a carnival outfit,” he said. In the meantime, Deputy Regent of Buleleng, Nyoman Sutjidra, when opening the BRC said that the carnival is indirectly educating the public that waste currently becoming the trigger of environmental damage can be processed into useful products. Creative space opened as widely as possible like this carnival is believed to be able to motivate wider public so as to process waste into useful products. DTRP declares three winners
DENPASAR - Competition of the Badung Market masterplan has ended and three winners have been defined. They were announced as the first, second and third after making a presentation by a total of 10 nominees. All the ten masterplan designs of the Badung Market made by the architects started to be presented in front of the officials of the Denpasar municipality and the expert team. Based on the results of the judging, finally the Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing Agency (DTRP) determined the winners of the competition along with prizes worth millions of rupiahs, namely the team led by Wayan Agus Novi Darmawan as the first winner, Nyoman Parwata as the second winner and I Made Wirata as the third winner. In addition to the three winners, the DTRP also defined some nominees. The Head of the DTRP, I Made Kusuma Diputra, when contacted on Friday (Oct. 28) said the three teams have been determined to become the winners. Furthermore, results of their drawing will be used as a reference to make a detailed engineering design (DED). Earlier, Regional Secretary of Denpasar, AAN Rai Iswara, ensured that the construction of the Badung Market will be undertaken in 2017. As estimation, approximately IDR 200 billion is allocated to re-establish the largest market in Bali. According to him, currently Denpasar is still struggling to get funding assistance from central government. Correspondingly, the development of the Badung Market has been budgeted in the general budgetary policy as well as priority and ad interim budgetary plafond (KUA PPAS). “Denpasar has prepared the budget through the KUA PPAS so that the development can be clear in 2017. THERE are always unique and interesting things in Bali. Gumang Temple at Bugbug, Karangasem, for instance, will hold a ritual to be thronged by thousands of Hindu pilgrims from all over Bali. Among the thousands of the pilgrims, the majority will climb to the hill top to the Gumang Temple with offerings including roasted suckling pig. Apparently, every birth of resident, especially at Bugbug customary village, it must include a roasted suckling pig. This offering should not be performed as soon as the baby was born, but can also be done after it grows adult. To get to the Gumang Temple is indeed not easy. These offerings are not only from residents of Bugbug, but also from other villages in Bali. It is also done by diaspora of Bugbug mostly living in Buleleng. Psychically, they still remember to devoted deities at their home birthplace. “The offering of roasted suckling pig on every birth must not necessarily be paid as soon as after the newborn. SEOUL - The woman at the centre of a deepening political crisis around South Korean President Park Geun-hye will cooperate with prosecutors investigating allegations that she had improper control over state affairs, her lawyer said on Sunday. Choi Soon-sil returned to South Korea early on Sunday from Germany, where she had been staying, her lawyer told reporters. “Choi has expressed through her attorney that she will actively respond to prosecutors’ investigation and will testify according to the facts,” Lee Kyung-jae, her lawyer, said on Sunday morning. “She is deeply remorseful that she had caused frustration and despondency among the public,” Lee said. Choi left Europe on a flight from London to avoid media camped out in Germany, Lee said. She would make herself available for questioning by prosecutors, he said. In the midst of the political crisis, Park has accepted the resignations of five of the top presidential aides, including the chief of staff, the presidential office said on Sunday. Three long-time Park aides, the insular core of advisors who have been criticised of tightly controlling the access to the president, had also stepped down, according to the
presidential office. Park’s office said on Friday she ordered her senior secretaries to tender their resignations. Choi was under intense pressure to return to South Korea as the political crisis engulfed Park over allegations that she allowed Choi to use her friendship to exert improper influence and benefit personally. Thousands of South Koreans rallied in Seoul on Saturday night demanding Park’s resignation over the scandal. Angry Koreans say Park betrayed public trust and mismanaged the government, and has lost a mandate to lead the country. The protest came as prosecutors investigate presidential aides and other officials to determine whether they broke the law to allow Choi to wield undue influence or gain financially. Park said last week she had given Choi access to speech drafts early in her term and apologised for causing concern among the public. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected in Brussels for a signing ceremony with leaders of the EU institutions billed as an EUCanada summit, all eager to ink a deal before any further hiccup. The French speakers of southern Belgium, a minority within their own small country and accounting for less than 1 percent of the 508 million EU consumers likely to be affected by the deal, had held it up until a breakthrough on Thursday, confirmed by regional parliamentary votes on Friday. The Canadian agreement is seen as a springboard to a larger EU deal with the United States, known as the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Treaty (TTIP), which has been much criticised by civil society groups and some politicians. While that deal was planned to be completed before the end of U.S. President Barack Obama’s term in January, both sides now acknowledge this is no longer feasible. On Saturday, EU Trade Commis-
sioner Cecilia Malmstrom said TTIP was not dead and talks with the United States would continue with the next U.S. administation. However, full implementation to include a contentious investment protection system will only follow after clearance by some 40 national and regional parliaments. The Belgian experience shows this is not a given. On Thursday, Belgium’s regions and the federal government agreed on a text addressing fears about the investment protection regime, saying it would not come into force during an initial period. It also has a safeguard clause to protect Belgian farmers in the event of a “market imbalance”. The investment protection system has been the focus of most protests against CETA and TTIP. Critics says the system, with arbitrage panels to rule on disputes between states and foreign investors, could be abused by multinational companies to dictate public policy, such as on environmental standards. The EU and Canada say their investment protection system guarantees the right of governments to regulate and would use independent judges and be more transparent. The deal will eliminate tariffs on almost 99 percent of goods. The beneficiaries would include, for example, carmakers or the EU textile sector, for which Canadian duties of up to 18 percent can be imposed. Service companies could also benefit and EU companies would be able to tender for public contracts at Canadian provincial and municipal level, the first time Canada has offered this. Dollar tumbles against euro, surges against peso on FBI Clinton probe
NEW YORK - The U.S. dollar tumbled against a basket of major currencies on Friday while hitting a three-week high against the Mexican peso on U.S. political uncertainty after the FBI said it would review more emails related to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s private email use. The reports added a new twist to the U.S. presidential campaign with just 11 days to go before Election Day on Nov. 8. Analysts said the dollar’s losses against major rivals were largely on renewed uncertainty over the outcome of the election, since traders were largely expecting a Clinton victory. Markets have tended to see Clinton as the candidate of the status quo, while there is greater uncertainty over what a victory for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump might mean for U.S. foreign policy, international trade deals or the domestic economy. “No one can doubt that this is a serious complication for the Clinton campaign if the investigation stays open,” said Joseph Trevisani, chief market strategist at WorldWideMarkets in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey. Clinton has been holding a commanding lead in the race to win the Electoral College and claim the presidency, according to results from the Reuters/Ipsos

A Trump victory has been viewed as a key risk for the Mexican currency given Trump’s promises to clamp down on immigration and rethink trade relations. “This news that came out has the potential to give a little bit more strength to Trump’s campaign, which is obviously not very good news for Mexico,” said Sireen Harajli, currency strategist at Mizuho Corporate Bank in New York. The dollar was last up 0.57 percent against the peso at 18.9380 pesos, with analysts attributing the moderation to profit-taking. (rtr)
JAKARTA - Acting Governor of Jakarta Sumarsono has reminded all bureaucratic elements of the Jakarta Administration to be neutral during the implementation of the Jakarta gubernatorial election (pilkada) process. Those who were not neutral would be fired, he said here Saturday. He, himself, would keep a distance from the three pairs of the candidates for the sake of neutrality, he said. “I belong to the candidate No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3, but I have to keep a distance from the three pairs,” he said. He called on the candidates and supporters to implement a peaceful pilkada. “On behalf of the Jakarta Provincial Government, I wish a happy peaceful campaign and with integrity,” he said. In the meantime, the three pairs of Jakartas gubernatorial candidates for the regional head election 2017, have declared their commitment to campaign peacefully and with integrity. The declaration was voiced in an event at the National Monument (Monas), here, Saturday
morning, and attended by supporters of the candidates. The three pairs are Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono-Sylviana Murni, Basuki Tjahaja PurnamaDjarot Saiful Hidayat, and Anies Baswedan-Sandiaga Uno. JAKARTA - Indonesia is expecting the rainy season to peak in January and February 2017, according to the Meteorological, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). “The rainy season will peak in January and February, particularly for Jakarta,” BMKG Chief Andi Eka Sakya said here. This year, rainfall has been 50 percent normal, however, because of natural phenomena such as Dipole Mode and La Nina, the country has been experiencing high intensity rainfall. “Besides, there is monsoon (a seasonal reversing wind accompanied by corresponding changes in
precipitation), and there is also a tropical cyclone and low pressure in the region,” he noted. The peak rainy season in January and February 2017 is forecast to be less wet than that in early 2016, BMKG Deputy in Charge of Meteorology Yunus Swarinoto said. However, it has tended to be
of a longer duration, according to Mulyono R Prabowo, head of the Public Meteorology Center of BMKG. The intensity might be less than the previous year, but the duration is expected to be longer, and this could trigger hydro-meteorological disasters such as landslide and flooding, he said. Therefore, the agency has urged people living in disaster-prone areas to remain vigilant in order to mitigate disaster and prevent casualties. (ant)

Clinton takes on U.S. FBI director in latest email flap
DAYTONA BEACH - H illary Clinton on Saturday challenged FBI Director James Comey to provide a fuller explanation of investigative steps he is taking related to her use of a private email server, as the Democratic presidential candidate accused him of “deeply troubling” behavior 10 days before the U.S. elections. Speaking to volunteers in Daytona Beach, Florida, Clinton said: “Some of you may have heard about a letter the FBI director sent” on Friday to the U.S. Congress informing it that the agency is again reviewing emails. Comey had decided in July that the FBI was not going to seek prosecution of Clinton for her handling of classified materials on a private email server while she was secretary of state. “It is pretty strange to put something like that out with such little information right before an election,” Clinton said, adding, “It’s not just strange, it’s unprecedented and it’s deeply troubling because voters deserve to get full and complete facts.” She urged Comey to “put it all out on the table.” In tandem with Clinton, fellow Democrats on Saturday also worked to pressure Comey to provide details on a controversy that dominated the presiden-
tial campaigns on Saturday, less than two weeks before the Nov. 8 elections. Four U.S. senators - Patrick Leahy, the longest-serving Senate Democrat, Dianne Feinstein, Thomas Carper and Benjamin Cardin - wrote Comey and U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch asking that they provide by Monday more detailed information about investigative steps underway. If all the components have played their role and work together, the agriculture will be able to run well. As the academician, the Udayana University has published the results of research that can be further developed to improve the agriculture itself. These researches should be facilitated so that they can be taken advantage to bring in benefits for agriculture. “Mindset and behavior of farmers should be educated so that they are able and willing to love their products. In my opinion, these things need to be developed. We start from small thing, do not need from the big ones. Most importantly, we must bring our farmers around to produce. After that there should be units or media being able to distribute their products so that farmers can enjoy the benefits of their business,” he explained. Mahardika continued that commitment of the government related to the making of regulations and provision of aids to farmers is very much needed. The government should be able to prepare a program appropriate for the community mostly consisting of farmers. “If the local authority does not want to (commit), well ... it is difficult as well. On that account, we need to convey that most of our community consists of farmers, so that we need to develop an appropriate program that can be enjoyed by them,” he said An academician from the Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Sucipta said that when talking about agriculture today it is still limited to the agricultural system itself. They cover production, cultivation and post-harvest technology. However, only few people are talking about agricultural education system ranging from primary, secondary to higher education. “It would be advisable if the education system of agriculture can be started with the basics. When students attending early-age education, they are learning to write and draw. The first thing to be painted is scenery, including its plants. BARCELONA — Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty kick but scored three times to restore his touch and help Real Madrid increase its lead of the Spanish league on Saturday. Ronaldo could have scored a fourth in Madrid’s 4-1 win at Alaves if not for goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco, who saved his spot kick. DAYTONA BEACH - H illary Clinton on Saturday challenged FBI Director James Comey to provide a fuller explanation of investigative steps he is taking related to her use of a private email server, as the Democratic presidential candidate accused him of “deeply troubling” behavior 10 days before the U.S. elections. Speaking to volunteers in Daytona Beach, Florida, Clinton said: “Some of you may have heard about a letter the FBI director sent” on Friday to the U.S. Congress informing it that the agency is again reviewing emails. Comey had decided in July that the FBI was not going to seek prosecution of Clinton for her handling of classified materials on a private email server while she was secretary of state. “It is pretty strange to put something like that out with such little information right before an election,” Clinton said, adding, “It’s not just strange, it’s unprecedented and it’s deeply troubling because voters deserve to get full and complete facts.” She urged Comey to “put it all out on the table.” In tandem with Clinton, fellow Democrats on Saturday also worked to pressure Comey to provide details on a controversy that dominated the presiden-
tial campaigns on Saturday, less than two weeks before the Nov. 8 elections. If all the components have played their role and work together, the agriculture will be able to run well. As the academician, the Udayana University has published the results of research that can be further developed to improve the agriculture itself. These researches should be facilitated so that they can be taken advantage to bring in benefits for agriculture. “Mindset and behavior of farmers should be educated so that they are able and willing to love their products. In my opinion, these things need to be developed. We start from small thing, do not need from the big ones. Most importantly, we must bring our farmers around to produce. After that there should be units or media being able to distribute their products so that farmers can enjoy the benefits of their business,” he explained. Mahardika continued that commitment of the government related to the making of regulations and provision of aids to farmers is very much needed. The government should be able to prepare a program appropriate for the community mostly consisting of farmers. “If the local authority does not want to (commit), well ... it is difficult as well. On that account, we need to convey that most of our community consists of farmers, so that we need to develop an appropriate program that can be enjoyed by them,” he said An academician from the Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Sucipta said that when talking about agriculture today it is still limited to the agricultural system itself. They cover production, cultivation and post-harvest technology. However, only few people are talking about agricultural education system ranging from primary, secondary to higher education. “It would be advisable if the education system of agriculture can be started with the basics. When students attending early-age education, they are learning to write and draw. The first thing to be painted is scenery, including its plants. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected in Brussels for a signing ceremony with leaders of the EU institutions billed as an EUCanada summit, all eager to ink a deal before any further hiccup. The French speakers of southern Belgium, a minority within their own small country and accounting for less than 1 percent of the 508 million EU consumers likely to be affected by the deal, had held it up until a breakthrough on Thursday, confirmed by regional parliamentary votes on Friday. The Canadian agreement is seen as a springboard to a larger EU deal with the United States, known as the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Treaty (TTIP), which has been much criticised by civil society groups and some politicians. While that deal was planned to be completed before the end of U.S. President Barack Obama’s term in January, both sides now acknowledge this is no longer feasible. On Saturday, EU Trade Commis-
sioner Cecilia Malmstrom said TTIP was not dead and talks with the United States would continue with the next U.S. administation. Supporters say the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with Canada will increase trade between the partners by 20 percent and boost the EU economy by 12 billion euros ($13 billion) a year and Canada’s by C$12 billion ($9 billion). This would come at a time of low growth with monetary policy at its limits and fiscal policy constrained. Assuming the European Parliament gives its assent, CETA could come into force partially early next year, allowing import tariffs to be removed. However, full implementation to include a contentious investment protection system will only follow after clearance by some 40 national and regional parliaments. The Belgian experience shows this is not a given. On Thursday, Belgium’s regions and the federal government agreed on a text addressing fears about the investment protection regime, saying it would not come into force during an initial period. It also has a safeguard clause to protect Belgian farmers in the event of a “market imbalance”. The investment protection system has been the focus of most protests against CETA and TTIP. Critics says the system, with arbitrage panels to rule on disputes between states and foreign investors, could be abused by multinational companies to dictate public policy, such as on environmental standards. The EU and Canada say their investment protection system guarantees the right of governments to regulate and would use independent judges and be more transparent. The deal will eliminate tariffs on almost 99 percent of goods. The beneficiaries would include, for example, carmakers or the EU textile sector, for which Canadian duties of up to 18 percent can be imposed. Service companies could also benefit and EU companies would be able to tender for public contracts at Canadian provincial and municipal level, the first time Canada has offered this. Dollar tumbles against euro, surges against peso on FBI Clinton probe
NEW YORK - The U.S. dollar tumbled against a basket of major currencies on Friday while hitting a three-week high against the Mexican peso on U.S. political uncertainty after the FBI said it would review more emails related to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s private email use. The reports added a new twist to the U.S. presidential campaign with just 11 days to go before Election Day on Nov. 8. Analysts said the dollar’s losses against major rivals were largely on renewed uncertainty over the outcome of the election, since traders were largely expecting a Clinton victory. Markets have tended to see Clinton as the candidate of the status quo, while there is greater uncertainty over what a victory for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump might mean for U.S. foreign policy, international trade deals or the domestic economy. “No one can doubt that this is a serious complication for the Clinton campaign if the investigation stays open,” said Joseph Trevisani, chief market strategist at WorldWideMarkets in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey. A Trump victory has been viewed as a key risk for the Mexican currency given Trump’s promises to clamp down on immigration and rethink trade relations. “This news that came out has the potential to give a little bit more strength to Trump’s campaign, which is obviously not very good news for Mexico,” said Sireen Harajli, currency strategist at Mizuho Corporate Bank in New York. JAKARTA - Acting Governor of Jakarta Sumarsono has reminded all bureaucratic elements of the Jakarta Administration to be neutral during the implementation of the Jakarta gubernatorial election (pilkada) process. Those who were not neutral would be fired, he said here Saturday. He, himself, would keep a distance from the three pairs of the candidates for the sake of neutrality, he said. “I belong to the candidate No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3, but I have to keep a distance from the three pairs,” he said. He called on the candidates and supporters to implement a peaceful pilkada. “On behalf of the Jakarta Provincial Government, I wish a happy peaceful campaign and with integrity,” he said. In the meantime, the three pairs of Jakartas gubernatorial candidates for the regional head election 2017, have declared their commitment to campaign peacefully and with integrity. JAKARTA - Indonesia is expecting the rainy season to peak in January and February 2017, according to the Meteorological, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). “The rainy season will peak in January and February, particularly for Jakarta,” BMKG Chief Andi Eka Sakya said here. This year, rainfall has been 50 percent normal, however, because of natural phenomena such as Dipole Mode and La Nina, the country has been experiencing high intensity rainfall. “Besides, there is monsoon (a seasonal reversing wind accompanied by corresponding changes in
precipitation), and there is also a tropical cyclone and low pressure in the region,” he noted. The peak rainy season in January and February 2017 is forecast to be less wet than that in early 2016, BMKG Deputy in Charge of Meteorology Yunus Swarinoto said. However, it has tended to be
of a longer duration, according to Mulyono R Prabowo, head of the Public Meteorology Center of BMKG. The intensity might be less than the previous year, but the duration is expected to be longer, and this could trigger hydro-meteorological disasters such as landslide and flooding, he said. This unique spectacle can be seen on Thursday (Oct. 13) after the sanctified effigy of Ida Bhatara of Bebandem, Ngis, Jasri and Bugbug customary village is enthroned at Gumang Temple. According to chief of Bugbug customary village, Jero Wayan Mas Suyasa, the offering of roasted suckling pig implies a sincere offering of local residents to the deity. “The offering of roasted suckling pig serves as an expression of devotion. Other than presenting this offering of every birth, many pilgrims also present roasted suck-
ling pig to pay a vow after getting success in economy or recovery of diseases,” he said. Such offerings of roasted suckling pig can reach thousands of pieces. These offerings are not only from residents of Bugbug, but also from other villages in Bali. It is also done by diaspora of Bugbug mostly living in Buleleng. Besides, there are also from residents of Bugbug married outside the village. Psychically, they still remember to devoted deities at their home birthplace. “The offering of roasted suckling pig on every birth must not necessarily be paid as soon as after the newborn. In order not to become a burden, this offering can
be paid any time when the people are ready. Moreover, it can be done after the child grows adult,” said Mas Suyasa, recently. This tradition has lasted for generations. SEOUL - The woman at the centre of a deepening political crisis around South Korean President Park Geun-hye will cooperate with prosecutors investigating allegations that she had improper control over state affairs, her lawyer said on Sunday. Choi Soon-sil returned to South Korea early on Sunday from Germany, where she had been staying, her lawyer told reporters. “Choi has expressed through her attorney that she will actively respond to prosecutors’ investigation and will testify according to the facts,” Lee Kyung-jae, her lawyer, said on Sunday morning. “She is deeply remorseful that she had caused frustration and despondency among the public,” Lee said. Choi left Europe on a flight from London to avoid media camped out in Germany, Lee said. She would make herself available for questioning by prosecutors, he said. In the midst of the political crisis, Park has accepted the resignations of five of the top presidential aides, including the chief of staff, the presidential office said on Sunday. Three long-time Park aides, the insular core of advisors who have been criticised of tightly controlling the access to the president, had also stepped down, according to the
presidential office. Park’s office said on Friday she ordered her senior secretaries to tender their resignations. Choi was under intense pressure to return to South Korea as the political crisis engulfed Park over allegations that she allowed Choi to use her friendship to exert improper influence and benefit personally. Thousands of South Koreans rallied in Seoul on Saturday night demanding Park’s resignation over the scandal. Angry Koreans say Park betrayed public trust and mismanaged the government, and has lost a mandate to lead the country. The protest came as prosecutors investigate presidential aides and other officials to determine whether they broke the law to allow Choi to wield undue influence or gain financially. Park said last week she had given Choi access to speech drafts early in her term and apologised for causing concern among the public. In an interview with South Korea’s Segye Ilbo newspaper published on Thursday, Choi said she received drafts of Park’s speeches after Park’s election victory but denied she had access to other official material, or that she influenced state affairs or benefited financially. SINGARAJA - Declaration of the ‘Plastic Waste-Free Buleleng’ automatically encouraged the interest of residents to carry out an advanced waste processing into useful products. Other than increasingly more waste processing, the other positive effect is the emergence of creativity made by students in North Bali utilizing waste into a variety of clothing. To open competition in the space of creating fashion from waste, 45 students participated in the Buleleng Recycle Carnival (BRC) 2016, Saturday (Oct. 29). This first event initiated by the Buleleng Education Agency involved the students of kindergarten, elementary, junior and high school/vocational school and featured a variety of attires dominantly made from waste materials. The Head of the Buleleng Education Agency, Gede Suyasa, said that BRC is deliberately held to educate students so they care about the environment. Besides, the activity is meant to enliven the Youth Pledge Day 2016. Through this activity, the students have creative ideas in designing carnival fashion made from recycled materials. With such a creative space, the students in the region can participate in reducing environmental damage caused by plastic waste. “Similarly, this can serve a creative space to demonstrate the ability in the fashion field. Participants show off high vivacity, whereas they only had a month to make preparation for the design and visually realize it into a carnival outfit,” he said. In the meantime, Deputy Regent of Buleleng, Nyoman Sutjidra, when opening the BRC said that the carnival is indirectly educating the public that waste currently becoming the trigger of environmental damage can be processed into useful products. Creative space opened as widely as possible like this carnival is believed to be able to motivate wider public so as to process waste into useful products. DENPASAR - Competition of the Badung Market masterplan has ended and three winners have been defined. They were announced as the first, second and third after making a presentation by a total of 10 nominees. All the ten masterplan designs of the Badung Market made by the architects started to be presented in front of the officials of the Denpasar municipality and the expert team. Based on the results of the judging, finally the Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing Agency (DTRP) determined the winners of the competition along with prizes worth millions of rupiahs, namely the team led by Wayan Agus Novi Darmawan as the first winner, Nyoman Parwata as the second winner and I Made Wirata as the third winner. In addition to the three winners, the DTRP also defined some nominees. The Head of the DTRP, I Made Kusuma Diputra, when contacted on Friday (Oct. 28) said the three teams have been determined to become the winners. Furthermore, results of their drawing will be used as a reference to make a detailed engineering design (DED). Earlier, Regional Secretary of Denpasar, AAN Rai Iswara, ensured that the construction of the Badung Market will be undertaken in 2017. As estimation, approximately IDR 200 billion is allocated to re-establish the largest market in Bali. According to him, currently Denpasar is still struggling to get funding assistance from central government. Correspondingly, the development of the Badung Market has been budgeted in the general budgetary policy as well as priority and ad interim budgetary plafond (KUA PPAS). “Denpasar has prepared the budget through the KUA PPAS so that the development can be clear in 2017. In the 1960s, at the local hamlet was established a Joged bumbung art troupe with single dancer. They staged from one hamlet to another or ngelawang to entertain the public. Until one day, a member of the art troupe was bullied psychically when making a performance outside the Penyabangan hamlet. The dancers and gamelan players were suddenly stiff and unable to do any activities, including dancing and playing their gamelan instrument. Joged Pingit_3 “However, suddenly there was a miracle in the form of rays coming down and embedding in the headdress of the joged dancer. Finally, the gamelan players and dancers could instantly move again. Spectators were stunned at the time,” said chief of Kerta customary village, Made Witarjana, when accompanying the Joged Pingit art troupe of Penyabangan hamlet in the performance at the Bali Arts Festival 2016, Friday (Jun. 24). Joged Pingit_1 Witarjana believed that the miracle came because the troupe members always ask for approval to the Dalem Pingit Temple at local hamlet prior to making performance. Since that incident, the single joged dancer has been getting popular as joged pingit. Furthermore, the joged pingit was only performed at certain times because the pingit here means sacred. The original headdress of the joged pingit has even been put in a shrine at the Dalem Temple. Nevertheless, the joged pingit can still be staged for entertainment. However, the headdress used by the dancer is a duplicate of the original one. Before making performance, the audience of the BAF was also invited to see the procession of picking up the Dalem Deity on stage. “Necessarily each joged performance should indeed begin with a ritual. First of all, we present a pejati offerings to ask for permission to deity that the headdress of the joged will be staged like this time (BAF—Ed) or when performing as sacred dance. It is meant to plead so as to be allowed to perform, given divine vibration and safety for the dancers, gamelan players and general public,” he said. According to Witarjana, the performance of joged as sacred dance must be danced by a woman who has never been menstruating yet. As for entertainment purposes, it can be performed by female dancers having passed their puberty. The dancers have to master some dances as well as mask dance, barong dance, sisya dance, patih dance and rangda dance. “Joged pingit tends to present storyline, not pengibingan (co-dancing),” he said. Related to building synergy between the agricultural sector and tourism, Bali should revise its regulation. This view emerged during the Focus Group Discussion at Warung Bali Global Shankara, Sanur.

At least there are seven important components getting involved and should make synergy in developing the agriculture of Bali. Among them, the legislative, universities and R & D, players of agribusiness and agro-industry, farmers, non-governmental organizations, mass media as well as the executives. A good agricultural should indeed be built up through holistic synergies. Each component should not find it superior or more important than other components, but need one another.
This was stated by the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University, Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Rai. The FGD was attended by a number of academicians from the Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Udayana University and Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Bali. “Firstly, the legislative with various regulations having made, but in fact many of them do not work. For example, the Regional Bylaw (Perda) on Plant Cultivation System cannot even be applied,”
he said. Rai added that universities and R & D have produced competent graduates, academic products, international journals and innovations. If they do not connect with the public, they must be studied more profoundly. “One of the players of agribusiness and agro-industry here is the Kadin. It should be calculated what percent is the members getting involved in agribusiness and agro-industry business. Then, how many investment has gone to farmers?” he added. Continued to page 6
