Friends proud of amateur film on Snowden’s HK stay Associated Press Writer
HONG KONG — It was shot in single takes with amateur actors, hobbyist directors and about $650 — mainly to pay for a room in the same Hong Kong hotel that briefly housed Edward Snowden. But the short YouTube film some bill as the first movie about the National Security Agency leaker is a source of pride for the friends who made it, even as they acknowledge its limitations. “Verax” gained much popularity at first, having been released just two days after Snowden left Hong Kong for Moscow, where he remains, but praise of the film has given way to criticism, with many viewers berating the four directors for amateur work and bad casting. The five-minute film is filled with Hong Kong scenery and melodramatic music and stars Andrew Cromeek, an American school teacher in Hong Kong with an uncanny resemblance to Snowden. Cromeek is unfazed by the critics, noting none of the actors is a professional and that they didn’t
think the mere YouTube video would gain so much attention in the first place. “I think the way it was shot was quite cool,” he said. “We are all amateur actors. We all had one take. It was kind of like, shoot, go, OK, done. So it’s fine. It’s completely OK if people are like, ‘It’s the worst acting in the world.’ It’s totally fine with me.” Jeff Floro said he and the other directors, Edwin Lee, Shawn Tse and Marcus Tsui, had only wanted to hone their guerrilla filmmaking style and produce something that was relevant to Hong Kong at that time. Floro himself works in finance by day, and creates movies as a hobby. Given the fact that little of Snowden was known at that time, the directors agreed to focus the film’s attention on the relationships between different groups and agencies in Hong Kong. They played with different ideas, “but in the end we felt like the tension is just there as it is, and we could just let it go through those circles and not actually highlight too much of Edward Snowden, considering we didn’t have that much information about him,” Floro said.

Bali government through the Transportation, Communications and Informatics Agency finally set the basic taxi fares. The Land Transportation Organization (Organda) Bali stated the rise in taxi fares averagely reached 26.67 percent. For instance, the tariff of taxi meter per kilometer was from IDR 4,500 to IDR 5,700, while the waiting fee from IDR 30,000 from IDR 40,000 per hour and door opening charge to IDR 5,000 from IDR 6,000. “The government has issued a Decree on the taxi fare increase. Averagely the increase reached 26.67 percent. The tariff has passed through calculation made together. The calculation was based on the rise in fuel price and the costs incurred. The taxi fare increase was also adjusted to the purchasing power and public interest,” said Chairman of the Organda Bali, Eddy Dharma Putra, in Denpasar, Monday (Jul 29). According to him, the increase in taxi fares was also adjusted to the purchasing power and public interest other than avoiding the flaming arising among the entrepreneurs of public transport. “We cannot raise fares recklessly because the policies made will affect the people’s purchasing power,” he said. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Bali Taxi Driver Union, Ketut Witra, said the taxi fare increase was effective on Monday (Jul 29)

Additional unit was carried out by a number of operators such as the Komotra Bali Cooperative (33 units) from 467 to 500 units, Wisata Nusa Dua Cooperative (75 units) from 200 to 275 units, the Wahana Dharma Organda Bali (72 units) from 128 to 200 units and Jimbaran Taxi Cooperative (75 units) from 98 to 173 units. A marine accident occurred in the water of Lima Beach at Pererenan, Mengwi, Badung, Monday (Jul 29). When undertaking a mulang pakelem or floating ritual, the boat carrying Mangku Ketut Swastikajaya flipped over in the middle of the sea. The victim who was also called Jero Mangku was drowned and found lifeless. Based on information, the victim and his entourage set out to sea to perform pakelem ritual on Lima Beach, Pererenan. The entourage was divided into two and equally used a boat. “So, they departed by two boats to sea,” a police source said, Monday. After the pakelem ritual completed in the middle of the sea, they planned to return to shore. Unfortunately, the boat boarded by the victim suddenly overturned. “The victim was in the same boat as I Made Dirgayusa and two fishermen also possessing the boat. Around 12:15 a.m., the boat boarded by the victim flipped over,” he said. Possibly, the boat overturned because of being hit by high waves. Boat passengers including the victim were trying to escape. Meanwhile, the entourage in another boat also tried to save the passengers. “Unfortunately, the victim could not be saved,” he said while asking his name to be made secret. Meanwhile, the victim Dirgayusa and two fishermen could be rescued. They were transported to another boat. Some time ago, a dog bit five residents at Kutuh Kelod hamlet, Petulu village, Gianyar. Aside from providing VAR for the victims, the sample of bite was also taken for examination. As a result, from the examination of sample was known if the dog biting the five residents of Gianyar was positive to rabies. Although finding positive result, according to the Head of Bali Health Agency, Ketut Suarjaya, the target of rabies-free Bali would not be delayed. “Although the dog is positive, as long as there has been no human death with positive rabies the target of rabies-free Bali has not been delayed,” said Suarjaya. So far, there had been no human death from rabies in Bali for 16 months. A region could be said to be free from rabies if there was no death case due to rabies in humans for two years. After knowing the dog biting the five residents of Gianyar was positive to rabies, Suarjaya said the measure needing to be taken was monitoring the victim so that they could get the anti-rabies vaccine (VAR) completely. “After being bitten, the five victims had obtained an action in the form of wound care and VAR administration. Now, they are continuously observed in order they can surely get a complete VAR so as to ensure that they are free from rabies virus,” said Suarjaya. He continued that to prevent the re-appearance of dog being positive to rabies the vaccination measures should be forwarded to the bitter end to ensure there would no longer rabies case in animals as well as in humans. Participation of the community to perform vaccination to their dogs regularly and properly was also needed to prevent the spread of rabies in dogs and humans. Suarjaya also hoped that people should not let their pet dog roam around but kept them well or put them into cage or tied. Communities should also make a proper treatment to the wound if they were bitten by a dog, namely treating the wound with clean water by using soap and running water, antiseptic and attempting to get anti-rabies vaccine. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

TRAVERSE CITY, Michigan — Already ravaged by toxic algae, invasive mussels and industrial pollution, North America’s Great Lakes now confront another potential threat that few had even imagined until recently: untold millions of plastic litter bits, some visible only through a microscope. Scientists who have studied gigantic masses of floating plastic in the world’s oceans are now reporting similar discoveries in the lakes that make up nearly one-fifth of the world’s fresh water. They retrieved the particles from Lakes Superior, Huron and Erie last year. This summer, they’re widening the search to Lakes Michigan and Ontario, skimming the surface with finely meshed netting dragged behind sailing vessels. “If you’re out boating in the Great Lakes, you’re not going to see large islands of plastic,” said Sherri Mason, a chemist with State University of New York at Fredonia and one of the project leaders. “But all these bits of plastic are out there.” Experts say it’s unclear how long “microplastic” pollution has been in the lakes or how it is affecting the environment. Studies are under way to determine whether fish are eating the particles. CHICAGO — Many heart specialists aren’t comfortable with discussing sex with their patients. But new guidance says they should, early and often, to let survivors know intimacy is often possible after a heart attack. Discussions should involve everything from when and how to resume sex, to what position might be best for some conditions or not advised for others, according to a consensus statement released Monday by the American Heart Association and the European Society of Cardiology. It’s billed as the first scientific statement with detailed guidance on resuming sex after a heart attack, stroke or other cardiac condition and is based on a review of
medical literature. “Sexual health is an important part of the overall health of the individual,” even for the oldest patients, said Elaine Steinke, a researcher and professor of nursing at Wichita State University in Kansas. Steinke was the lead author of the statement published in the heart association’s Circulation journal and the European Heart Journal. Co-author Tiny Jaarsma, a professor and heart failure researcher at Sweden’s Linkoping University, said in an email that doctors and nurses “rarely discuss sex ‘spontaneously’, but often wait until the patient brings up questions around sex. Health care providers often are afraid to upset patients or might feel embarrassed themselves.” Fears and anxieties about
resuming sex are often numerous: Will it cause another heart attack? Can I use Viagra? What if my defibrillator goes off during sex? And many are too shy to ask, so heart doctors, nurses and other health care workers should take the lead and initiate the discussion with men and women patients of all ages and their partners, according to the statement. Many heart patients can safely resume sexual intercourse after first checking with their doctors, and the answers to many questions depend on each patient’s overall health, the guidance says. Patients with mild, stable chest pain face a low risk for a sextriggered heart problem, whereas patients with advanced heart failure should postpone sex until their condition is stabilized.

Dougall, who was imprisoned for not reporting her boyfriend’s possession of cocaine, claimed inmates beat her up several times. “I would cover up my face and take the beatings as they punched and kicked me,” Dougall told the Daily Mail, adding inmates tried to force her to take drugs. She described repeated sexual advances from a lesbian inmate who “ran” the women’s block. “Because I rebuffed her, she would force me to dress up in leather or other fancy clothes and dance like a stripper while the other women laughed and pushed me around. I was humiliated,” Dougall said. She said most of the women were on drugs “virtually every day”. “If you had money the guards would get you anything you want-

Wiratna said consulate representatives made visits to see British inmates around three times a month and Dougall had never raised any concerns. “If she had been mistreated, why didn’t she complain to them? They would certainly have relayed her complaints to us,” he said. British embassy officials declined to comment on Dougall, saying in a statement to AFP: “We take allegations of mistreatment very seriously and will raise them with the local authorities if the individual gives their permission.” Dougall was arrested in a police sting in 2012 after Briton Lindsay June Sandiford, 56, was found with almost five kilograms (11 pounds) of cocaine in her suitcase at the island’s international airport. Dougall was one of four Britons and an Indian national suspected in a drug ring, but she was convicted only of failing to report her boyfriend, Julian Ponder, for drug possession. Sandiford, who helped police net the others, was sentenced to death for smuggling. Media reports have said Kerobokan, where several dozen foreigners are held, is notorious for drugs, corruption and abuse.

Billions of rupiahs for Badung govt employee uniforms Mangupura (Bali Post)—
It has become a public secret if the welfare of civil servants in Badung County is higher than the other regions in Bali. Aside from the income side, the employees are also given a va riety of facilities and appropriate equipment including uniforms. In the fiscal year 2013, the Badung County allocates the budget to purchase uniform for thousands of employees with a total value at IDR 4.8 billion. The Head of General Affairs of Badung Regional Secretariat, IB Oka Dirga, explained on Friday (Jul 29) the budget worth IDR 4.8 bil-
lion would be used to purchase daily uniforms or brown civil defense and sportswear. The budget also included the attributes and belts.
According to him, the budget was aimed at supporting the uniform impression and the appearance of the employees of Badung County. Moreover, the previous uniforms had been four years old. He said the IDR 3.7 billion fund of daily uniform was intended for 5,572 employees at the regional working unit (SKPD) and secretariat, except for teachers. Such amount of employees included those spreading in the offices of
the headmen and subdistricts. Each employee would get the uniform valued at IDR 545,000. Meanwhile, the budget worth IDR 1.1 billion was allocated for the procurement of sportswear. It would be earmarked for the purchase of 6,343 sets of uniform where they averagely cost IDR180,000 each. Oka Dirga dismissed if the budget of uniforms was too expensive. Another culprit under pursuit Marine Police Unit of Denpasar Metro Police led by AA Putu Wismara Putra could arrest two of three fisherman hunting green turtle, Friday (Jul 26). They respectively named Holik, 44, and Ridwan, 27, the residents living at Bugis Kampong, Serangan. Meanwhile, another culprit with the initials BG managed to escape and is now remaining a fugitive. Other than both suspects, police also seized the evidence in the form of a living green turtle, a dead turtle, 77 turtle eggs and diving gears. Now, both suspects and the evidence were secured in Denpasar Metro Police. “Both suspects are still undergoing intensive interrogation in the investigator’s room,” said Spokesperson of the Denpasar Metro Police, IB Sarjana, Monday (Jul 29). In the press conference, Sarjana said that his party was still pursuing another culprit. A number of personnel had been deployed to catch the culprit. The fugitive was expected to be immediately arrested, so that the case could quickly be resolved. “Let’s say prayer in order the fugitive under pursuit (with initials BG—Ed) can be immediately arrested,” he said before media crews in Denpasar Metro Police.

A number of personnel immediately performed an investigation and beach search. At 10:00 p.m., police found three fishermen (Holik, Ridwan and BG) berthing on the beach. When seeing the coming of police, the three culprits tried to flee. However, Holik and Ridwan were arrested without resistance. Meanwhile, another culprit with initials BG managed to escape. After the arrest of the suspects, police immediately searched the boat Akbar 06. They found two turtles (one live and one dead), 77 turtle eggs, 2 flashlights, 5 arrows, 3 pairs of diving flippers and 2 masks. “The dead turtle has been slaughtered by the suspects,” said Sarjana. Meanwhile, the living turtle had been entrusted to the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA). Due to the action of the suspects, they would be imposed with the Act of the RI No. 5/1990 on Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystems. “The turtle was stuck in the net. Progress was being made on cleaning the oil that washed into Prao Bay on the west coast of Samet Island on Sunday night, though not fast enough, and rough seas and strong winds spread thin films of dispersed oil to a rocky bay farther north, said Rayong Deputy Gov. Supeepat Chongpanish. “The most urgent issue is to get rid of the oil from the bay as soon as possible,” Supeepat said in a telephone interview. “The longer it stays on, the worse effect it will have on the people and environment.” Provincial authorities have de-
clared Prao Bay a disaster zone, but said that more popular beaches on the island’s east coast remain untouched. There is concern, however, that if not contained soon the slick could spread to beaches across the island and on the nearby mainland. About 50,000 liters (13,200 gallons) of oil - about the amount contained in one and a half tanker trucks - spilled into the Gulf of Thailand off Rayong province on Saturday morning from a leak in a
pipeline operated by PTT Global Chemical Plc., a subsidiary of state-owned oil and gas company PTT Plc. The company said it detected a leak when crude oil from a tanker moored offshore was being transferred to the pipeline, 20 kilometers (11 miles) from a refinery in Map Ta Phut, one of the largest industrial estates in Southeast Asia. The leak has since been fixed. The slick floated in the sea for more than a day before it began washing ashore on Samet Island, a small resort island that each year draws some 1 million foreign and domestic tourists due to its white sand beaches and its proximity to Bangkok, 140 kilometers (90 miles) away. PTTGC apologized on Monday and said the cleanup will likely be completed within three days.

ROME - Silvio Berlusconi’s political fate is in the hands of Italy’s highest court, which was hearing arguments Tuesday in the former premier’s challenge to a fraud conviction. The tensely awaited decision, which could have an impact on Italy’s fragile, three-month-old coalition government, is expected Wednesday or possibly Thursday, Berlusconi’s defender Franco Coppi told reporters outside the courtroom. Berlusconi’s case is one of eight on the docket, and the last one to be heard. Berlusconi, 76, was convicted with three others in Milan last October of tax fraud in a complex TV rights transaction for his Mediaset network, and sentenced to four years in prison with a fiveyear ban on public office. A Milan appeals court upheld the lower court’s decision this spring. This is his final appeal. The three-time former premier has no official role in Italy’s uneasy coalition government, but remains influential and was key to the center-right’s close, secondplace finish in February elections. He won a seat in Italy’s Senate, which he would have to vacate if the lower courts’ verdicts are confirmed. Berlusconi has reportedly appealed to center-right lawmakers not to yank support from the cross-party government of Enrico Letta, which already is having trouble mustering support for a series of measures to help Italy out of recession. Letta said Monday while on an official visit to Athens that he is not worried about the decision’s impact on his government, and that the coalition is stronger than most believe.
Despite politicians’ attempts to spread calm, political analysts said the situation remains volatile. “The problems is that in the case of a conviction, the dynamic could overwhelm the wishes of individuals,” Stefano Folli, a political analyst for il Sole 24 Ore business daily, wrote Tuesday. “A convicted Berlusconi would become a martyr for his backers while at the same time being an unacceptable ally for a good part of the center-left.” The high court is limited in its scope to examining whether errors were made at the trial or earlier appeal. It does not hear new witnesses or receive new evidence. If the court upholds the conviction, Berlusconi will be immediately stripped of his Senate seat and barred from running for any election. It is unlikely he would serve jail time, as three years would be shaved off in a general amnesty aimed at emptying prisons and it is unusual to serve time for short sentences, especially given Berlusconi’s age. The court could throw out Berlusconi’s conviction, but such rulings are rare. Another possibility is that it could order a new appeals trial before a different judge. If that happened, the statute of limitations would likely kick in for at least some of the alleged offenses, resulting in a milder sentence if Berlusconi is convicted again, and maybe sparing him the ban on holding public office. In a separate criminal case yet to come to appeal, Berlusconi faces a possible lifetime ban on holding public office if a lowercourt conviction for paying for sex with a minor and using his office to cover it up is upheld. That verdict in June also dealt him a seven-year prison sentence.

MADRID - Spain’s recession eased in the second quarter, official data showed on Tuesday, as booming exports helped to offset weak domestic demand in the eurozone’s fourthbiggest economy. Gross domestic product shrank by 0.5 percent -- its eighth straight quarterly decline. This came after a 0.5-percent drop in the first quarter and a decline of 0.8 percent in the final quarter of 2012, the National Statistics Institute said. On an annual basis the economy contracted by 1.7 percent following a 2.0 percent decline in the first three months of the year, the institute said in a preliminary report. “This result was basically caused by a more negative contribution in the domestic demand, which was compensated partially by a positive contribution of the external demand,” it said. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is relying on growing exports and an upsurge in tourism to end an economic slump that started in 2008 after the end of a decade-long property boom. Earlier this month the government reported that Spain’s trade deficit narrowed sharply to just 27.5 million euros ($36 million) in May largely due to booming exports. Rajoy’s conservative government has made reforms, such as changes to labour market rules, that have reduced labour costs and help make Spanish goods more competitive. The unemployment rate fell for the first time for two years in the second quarter, to 26.26 percent from a record 27.16 percent in the first quarter, the statistics office reported last week. Seasonal tourism accounted for most of the drop as the sector is expected to be strong this year as cash-strapped Europeans look for budget vacations while avoiding Egypt and other rival destinations in the Middle East and North Africa experience political turmoil. The statistics agency also reported provisional data showing that inflation slowed in July to 1.9 percent after rising for two months to 2.2 percent and 1.8 percent in May. While the government has hailed the improvements in economic indicators, it has offered little hope of a solid recovery, forecasting a contraction of 1.3 percent in 2013 and only a feeble 0.5 percent rebound in 2014. A property market crash in 2008 plunged Spain into a recession, destroyed millions of jobs and left banks awash in bad loans. The economy emerged gingerly from that downturn in 2010 before sliding back into recession in mid-2011. The institute will publish its final figures for the second quarter GDP on August 29.

TOKYO — Japan’s industrial output fell in June for the first time in five months, the government said Tuesday as it released data highlighting the fragility of the recovery in the world’s No. 3 economy. Manufacturing slipped 3.3 percent from the month before in June and was 4.8 percent lower than a year before, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said. Such indicators suggest weaker growth in China may be sapping some of the momentum from the recovery. Meanwhile, household spending remained weak, despite a slight increase in incomes in June. However, other data showed the jobless rate edging down to 3.9 percent, its lowest level since October 2008, when the economy was slammed by the global financial crisis. The jobless rate had remained at 4.1 percent during the
previous few months. The most recent data have officials questioning whether the government should go ahead with a promised sales tax increase that economists say could derail progress in restoring growth and breaking free of deflation. The central bank governor, Haruhiko Kuroda, said Monday he believes the recovery is strong enough to weather a tax hike, which is needed to help redress ballooning deficits that have taken Japan’s national debt to record high levels. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has claimed progress with his “Abenomics” strategy of fighting deflation with aggressive monetary easing and higher government spending. But he has indicated he may consider amending the plan for a 3 percentage point increase in the tax next that is slated for April. Figures released earlier this month showed consumer prices
rising 0.4 percent in June, but core inflation which excludes food and energy prices remained negative. Costs for food and energy have largely been pushed higher by the sharp weakening of the Japanese yen, which drives up costs for imported food and energy in this resource-scarce nation. Overall, household spending fell 0.4 percent in June compared with the month before, despite doubledigit increases for some items, such as beef, beer and sushi. A key factor will be whether companies begin to invest more and raise wages, to help drive a recovery in consumer demand that accounts for most of Japan’s economic growth. While sales are up by double digits at Tokyo’s toniest department stores, overall retail sales fell in June from the month before, with surveys showing consumer spending is slowing, Marcel Thieliant, an economist for Capital Economics, said in a report Monday.
“In the future, we hope this election model can be developed for district head, mayor, and gubernatorial elections,” he said while attending the village head election at the village. Budiastra said the e-voting system has several advantages compared with the manual system. “Not only is the system cheap but also it meets the honest, fair, direct, general, free and secret principles,” he said. He did not deny that many people doubt about the system or worry about the results of elections which could be controlled so that the election winner could be arranged. “I should like to affirm that nobody can control the system developed by BPPT (the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology) to decide who will win elections,” he added. Meanwhile, Dr Marzan A. Iskandar, head of BPPT which developed the e-voting system said this system will enable the state to save funds by up to 50 percent. Earlier, chief of the agency’s E-voting system program Andrari Grahitandaru said whether or not this system can be applied nationwide depends on five factors, namely technology, cost, organizers, people and legality. “When it comes to technology, cost and people, I think there is no problem. It is up to the capability of election organizers in this case the KPU (elections commission) and the law,” he said. He believed that the people are ready to follow whatever election system so it just depends on the readiness of political parties which will contest in elections. “By applying the system, vote counts cannot be manipulated, because all data are recorded more accurately,” he said. Grahitandaru said if the e-voting system is to be implemented in 2019, the law and regulation related to it must be ready in 2015. Budiastra, Iskandar and Grahitandaru believed the e-voting can be one of the benefits of electronic ID (e-KTP) policy because these two policies are closely related.

All activities were focused in the south, particularly in the capital of Bali namely Denpasar. The gap was exacerbated by the location of Ngurah Rai International Airport in the South of Bali. In line with his idea of developing West Bali as a new quality tourism resort resembling the Nusa Dua model, he offered concept of Batu Ampar Tourist Resort with its potential tourist attraction such as the marine park at Pulau Menjangan, West Bali National Park will unquestionably attracts tourist from all over the world. The problem was, he argued, the land access from Denpasar to North Bali was still very poor. It took more than two hours from Denpasar
to the North Bali. That is why, he argued further, a new breakthrough must be found, which is constructing an air strip where at least light aircrafts would able to land on the area. The idea then was realized by his successor, Drs. Ketut Wirata Sindhu, where an airstrip widely known as Let. Kol. Wisnu airstrip was established. In promoting the new airstrip, an event was initiated called Buleleng Fly In. Aviators from neighboring countries and beyond, such as New Zealand and Australia were invited to take part in this event. The goal was to introduce the new airstrip in particular and what North Bali has to offer in general. This event was said to be successful due to many aviators taking part. After the successful first event a second event was held with the same result. Unfortunately, the successor of Drs. Ketut Wirata Sindhu, Drs. Putu Bagiada, discontinued the event. Since the outset of the plan reported by mass media in Bali, the preliminary plan has drawn debate among the local authorities about the location of the new international airport. Geographically, the north Bali is the largest area in Bali, almost one third of the entire area of Bali. On the south side it is bordered by a chain of hills which divides Bali into two parts, north and south. Singaraja as the capital of the
regency is located approximately in the centre of the regency. On the west side there are two districts, named Seririt and Gerokgak. On the other side, on the east, are Sawan, Kubutambahan and Tejakula. In the Gerokgak Distric there is Let. Kol. Wisnu Airstrip. So some people suggest that the new airport must be built in the Kecamatan Gerokgak. They argue that there is an airstrip already there, availability of the land, and part of the land are owned by local goverment of Bali. The appropriation of the land for such mega project is considered a big problem that needs to be solved. On the other side, the people suggest that the new airport must be built in the Kecamatan Kubutambahan, they argue that the area is the safest for aviation compared with Kecamatan Gerokgak due its closeness to the hills which causes air turbulent. Body of driver recovered after Swiss trains crash Associated Press Writer
BERLIN - Authorities say they have recovered the body of the driver of one of two trains that collided on a regional line in western Switzerland. Police in Vaud canton said rescue workers found the body of the man, whose name wasn’t released, in the driver’s cabin early Tuesday after they managed to separate the front of the two trains. The collision on Monday near the Granges-pres-Marnand station left the trains locked together, partly lifted off the tracks by the force of the collision. In all, there were 46 passengers on board; 26 of them were taken to hospitals, none of them in life-threatening condition. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the collision. Switzerland’s rail system is considered among the best and safest in the world.

Taliban militants have freed 243 prisoners in an assault on a prison in north-west Pakistan, officials say. The attack in the town of Dera Ismail Khan began with huge explosions at around midnight on Monday (15:00 GMT). Gunmen then opened fire with rocket-propelled grenades and machine-guns, police chief Sohail Khalid said. About 70 attackers were in police uniform. The town is in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, next to Pakistan’s restive mountainous tribal region. The town’s prison houses hundreds of Taliban and militants from banned groups. Twelve people - including six police officers - were killed in the gun battle that raged for three or four hours after militants launched their assault. The town’s civil commissioner Mushtaq Jadoon said that 30 hardened militants jailed for their involvement in major attacks or suicide bombings were among those who escaped. Those released include two local Taliban commanders, Abdul Hakim and Haji Ilyas, reports BBC Urdu’s Ahmed Wali. The Taliban assault comes on the day parliament is electing a new president. We will never know if the timing was deliberate, but it has hugely embar-
rassed the government, and once again highlighted the ability of the militants to strike at will. Suggestions the authorities had advance warning of the attack, but did not act on it, only make matters worse. No very high-profile Taliban members were being held at the Dera prison, but at least 30 militants freed in the assault are described by the authorities as “hardened” Taliban fighters. The attack rekindles memories of a 2012 jailbreak in the nearby city of Bannu in which about 400 prisoners escaped, including Adnan Rashid, a radicalised former member of the military who recently wrote an open letter to child activist Malala Yousafzai, explaining why she was attacked by the Taliban. The Dera jail attack comes a month after the police said they had arrested a group of militants
who were planning to launch a similar attack on Karachi Central Jail. This is indicative of an emerging Taliban strategy to break jails instead of negotiating the release of their prisoners by taking hostages, which they have done in the past. Also released is a sectarian militant, Waleed Akbar, the principle suspect in last year’s attacks on Shia mourners in Dera Ismail Khan during the Shia mourning month of Moharram. Attackers used loudhailers to call the names of particular inmates, Mr Jadoon said. Fourteen fugitives were later re-arrested by police, he said. A curfew has now been imposed on Dera Ismail Khan as police hunt for the remaining escaped prisoners, but correspondents say this will be a difficult task as they flee into tribal areas.
A coach has plunged off a flyover in southern Italy leaving at least 38 people dead in the country’s worst road accident for decades. The coach hit several vehicles before smashing through a barrier and toppling down a steep slope near the town of Avellino, in the Campania region. At least 10 people were injured, some of them seriously. The coach was taking about 50 people, including children, back to Naples following a pilgrimage. The cause of the accident is not yet known. Some reports say the vehicle was travelling at speed. What really strikes you here at the scene of the crash is the great height that the bus fell. Standing where it came crashing down through the trees, you have to crane your neck to look up at edge of the road. It stands 30m above you against the blue of the sky. Most of the wreck of the bus was taken away soon after daybreak. But smaller parts of it are still lying around - including a few seats. And in among the debris there were some personal items: a pair of women’s silver flip flops, and what looked like a child’s toy. They are just the sort of things that you might expect families to have with them on an excursion like this - what was supposed to be a chance to get away to the countryside on a summer weekend. The head of the local fire brigade division, Alessio Barbarulo, said barriers on bridges would normally prevent such accidents but “evidently it seems the impact was so strong that even the barrier gave way”. A survivor said the driver, who was among the dead, appeared to have lost control of the bus, possibly after a tyre punctured. Transport Minister Maurizio Lupi said the vehicle had passed its annual inspection in March, and there was no indication of technical problems. Tests are being carried out on the driver’s body as part of the investigation into what caused the accident. TV footage showed smashed vehicles on the flyover and shrouded bodies lined up by the side of a road. The Naples-Bari motorway was closed to traffic because of the accident. The bus dropped 30m (98ft), coming to rest in heavy undergrowth after smashing through the guard-rail. The final number of victims remains unclear, with local officials saying 38 died while the transport ministry in Rome spoke of 39. The injured were taken to hospitals in Avellino, Salerno and Nola, Ansa news agency said.

JAKARTA - At least eight people are dead and five are missing after flooding and landslides hit eastern Indonesia, an official said on Tuesday. A search and rescue operation is under way, with police and military personnel scouring rubble for the missing, National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said. The tragedy came after heavy rain on Monday night caused the Moa-Moa river, which cuts through the city of Ambon on the Maluku chain of islands, to overflow. “Eight were killed and five are still missing. Another 10 were
injured,” Nugroho stated. The floods submerged some houses on the river’s banks and triggered landslides in several areas among Ambon’s hills. Nine houses were swept away or buried and another 30 damaged. Floods and landslides are common in Indonesia, which is prone to frequent bursts of heavy rain. Environmentalists blame logging and a failure to reforest denuded land for exacerbating flooding.

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Transportation has allowed the existing vessels to increase the passenger capacity up to 30 percent, according to ministry’s official. “We give tolerance to the ship operators to carry passengers up to 30 from the normal capacity because technically it remains safe,” Director General of Sea Transport of the Ministry of Transportation, Bobby R Mamahit, said here on Monday. According to him, the additional capacity of the ships’ passengers sounds dangerous but technically it remains safe. However, he called on the ship operators to increase the number of safety equipment such as buoys and lifeboats, as the mass holiday exodus is predicted to start on August 3, 2013. Besides, he will continue to monitor the activities at 53 ports in the country, including checking the seaworthiness of the ships that will carry to holiday travelers. As has been reported earlier that the Ministry of Transportation would provide free homecoming by ships for the holiday travelers who will use motorcycles. He said the free travel by ships was also intended to reduce traffic congestion along Java’s northern coastal highway, better known as “Pantura.” MV Dobonsolo of state shipping company PT PELNI and warship KRI Banda Aceh have been prepared to carry the holiday travelers during the holiday season this year. MV Dobonsolo has the loading capacity of 1,700 motorcycles and 3,400 passengers, while KRI Banda Aceh can carry 1,000 motorcycles and 2,000 passengers. Those two ships will transport the passengers from Tanjung Priok port in Jakarta to Tanjung Emas port in Semarang, Central Java.

JAKARTA — The head of Indonesia’s largest Muslim organization called Monday for the disbanding of a hard-line Islamic group after a pregnant woman was killed in a car accident during illegal raids to curb prostitution during the holy month of Ramadan. The Islamic Defenders Front, known by its Indonesia acronym FPI, has a long record of vandalizing nightspots, hurling stones at Western embassies and attacking rival religious groups. “Their attitude does not reflect the teachings of Islam,” said Aqil Siradj, chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama, Indonesia’s largest Muslim organization. “We called on the government to disband the group that did this vandalizing.” He said he regretted that the government has remained silent as hard-line groups shuttered Christian churches, attacked their worshippers and torched Ahmadiyah and Shiites mosques, which they consider heretical. The latest incident occurred July 18 in Central Java’s Kendal town.
About 50 FPI supporters attempted to raid an area they believed was allowing prostitution. While fleeing the scene to escape an angry mob of local residents after vandalizing businesses, one of their vehicles hit a couple on a motorbike, killing a pregnant woman and injuring her husband. In a separate raid, supporters of the group vandalized a liquor store in Makassar, capital of South Sulawesi province in eastern Indonesia. Even though arrests have been made in both cases, it has thrust Indonesia’s weak law enforcement under the spotlight and sparked anger online and in local media, with many denouncing the group. “My position is very clear, we will not forgive any form of intolerance,” President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said in a rare condemnation last week. “This has to be prevented so that no other organization, including the FPI, engage in any more violence.” The hard-liner group responded by releasing a statement calling Yudhoyono a “loser” and a “disgrace to Muslims.” Two days later amid growing pressure, its leader, Riziek
Shihab, released an apology for the accident and pledged that the group would expel any member who engages in violence. Prominent rights activist Hendardi from Setara Institute, a watchdog for interfaith tolerance, said Monday that the controversy raises further questions about the commitment of the National Police, whose leaders have repeatedly vowed to crack down on raids carried out by the group. “It seems that the police are not serious and there’s a reluctance to take legal action against FPI,” said Hendardi, who like many Indonesians uses a single name. An online petition calling for FPI to be disbanded had been signed by more than 41,000 people on Monday. However, police spokesman Rianto said authorities were not authorized to do so. Indonesia, home for 240 million people has more Muslims than any other country in the world but is secular with a history of religious tolerance. In recent years, however, an extremist fringe has grown louder.

Ferrari have revealed that Fernando Alonso has been admonished by the company’s president. The team said Luca Di Montezemolo phoned the driver on Monday to wish him a happy birthday but also “tweaked his ear” for his “latest comments”. Ferrari have not revealed which remarks by Alonso, 32, upset Di Montezemolo. “The remark by Alonso that appears to have upset Luca Di Montzemolo was made to the Italian media. He was asked what he’d like as a 32nd birthday present and replied: ‘La macchina degli altri’. “There is no perfect translation. “Some say it is ‘someone else’s car’, others ‘the other guys’ car’ or ‘the car the other guys have’. “They all mean fundamentally the same thing - that he wants Ferrari to improve the car so he can fight more effectively for the title. Robust Football League reaches 125th anniversary

LONDON - They have been playing against each other, on and off, since September 1888 and next weekend Preston North End, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Derby County, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley and Notts County are marking a very special milestone. They will be kicking off the 125th anniversary season of the English Football League, the oldest in the world, and the model on which virtually every other domestic league competition has been based on ever since. Although the FA Cup, which began in 1871, had spread the soccer gospel around the British Isles and professionalism had been legalised in 1885, Aston Villa chairman William McGregor thought regular competitive fixtures would be a far better way for the top clubs to make money and sustain themselves rather than rely on irregular cup games and friendlies. So on March 2, 1888 he wrote to 12 of them suggesting a league format and on Sept. 8, 1888 the Football League began with clubs from the north and midlands. It was clearly a successful idea with a second division added just four years later. The third division was formed in 1920-21, which was then regionalised the following season into North and South. Eleven of the 12 founder members are still in existence: Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Derby County, Everton, Notts County, Preston North End, who won the first title, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers. The 12th, the original Accrington club, lasted from 1876 until 1896 but the town is still repre-
sented in the League today by Accrington Stanley in the fourth tier (League Two). Villa, Everton, Stoke and West Brom will not be taking part in this weekend’s celebrations as they are in the Premier League. GREATEST SHOW

Medina told The Associated Press on Monday that Maradona ran at him “like he was taking a free kick” and kicked him so hard in the groin and upper leg area that he “doubled over in pain.” “This wasn’t the kick or an ordinary person,” Medina said. “This is from someone used to kicking ... He seemed very angry, out of his mind. Like something

He also scored against Chile in the 2007 Copa America and had four goals during qualifying for the 2014 World Cup Benitez also spent a season in England with Birmingham. Robust Football League reaches 125th anniversary

LONDON - They have been playing against each other, on and off, since September 1888 and next weekend Preston North End, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Derby County, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley and Notts County are marking a very special milestone. They will be kicking off the 125th anniversary season of the English Football League, the oldest in the world, and the model on which virtually every other domestic league competition has been based on ever since. Although the FA Cup, which began in 1871, had spread the soccer gospel around the British Isles and professionalism had been legalised in 1885, Aston Villa chairman William McGregor thought regular competitive fixtures would be a far better way for the top clubs to make money and sustain themselves rather than rely on irregular cup games and friendlies. So on March 2, 1888 he wrote to 12 of them suggesting a league format and on Sept. 8, 1888 the Football League began with clubs from the north and midlands. It was clearly a successful idea with a second division added just four years later. The third division was formed in 1920-21, which was then regionalised the following season into North and South. Eleven of the 12 founder members are still in existence: Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Derby County, Everton, Notts County, Preston North End, who won the first title, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers. The 12th, the original Accrington club, lasted from 1876 until 1896 but the town is still repre-
sented in the League today by Accrington Stanley in the fourth tier (League Two). Villa, Everton, Stoke and West Brom will not be taking part in this weekend’s celebrations as they are in the Premier League. GREATEST SHOW

Ferrari have revealed that Fernando Alonso has been admonished by the company’s president. The team said Luca Di Montezemolo phoned the driver on Monday to wish him a happy birthday but also “tweaked his ear” for his “latest comments”. Ferrari have not revealed which remarks by Alonso, 32, upset Di Montezemolo. “The remark by Alonso that appears to have upset Luca Di Montzemolo was made to the Italian media. He was asked what he’d like as a 32nd birthday present and replied: ‘La macchina degli altri’. “There is no perfect translation. “Some say it is ‘someone else’s car’, others ‘the other guys’ car’ or ‘the car the other guys have’. “They all mean fundamentally the same thing - that he wants Ferrari to improve the car so he can fight more effectively for the title. Which is no different to what he and the team have been saying for three or four races now.” But when he was asked what birthday present he would like after finishing fifth in Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix, Alonso replied: “Someone else’s car.” A Ferrari statement said Alonso was reminded by Di Montezemolo that “all the great

Body of driver recovered after Swiss trains crash Associated Press Writer
BERLIN - Authorities say they have recovered the body of the driver of one of two trains that collided on a regional line in western Switzerland. Police in Vaud canton said rescue workers found the body of the man, whose name wasn’t released, in the driver’s cabin early Tuesday after they managed to separate the front of the two trains. The collision on Monday near the Granges-pres-Marnand station left the trains locked together, partly lifted off the tracks by the force of the collision. In all, there were 46 passengers on board; 26 of them were taken to hospitals, none of them in life-threatening condition. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the collision. Switzerland’s rail system is considered among the best and safest in the world.

Taliban militants have freed 243 prisoners in an assault on a prison in north-west Pakistan, officials say. The attack in the town of Dera Ismail Khan began with huge explosions at around midnight on Monday (15:00 GMT). Gunmen then opened fire with rocket-propelled grenades and machine-guns, police chief Sohail Khalid said. About 70 attackers were in police uniform. The town is in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, next to Pakistan’s restive mountainous tribal region. The town’s prison houses hundreds of Taliban and militants from banned groups. Twelve people - including six police officers - were killed in the gun battle that raged for three or four hours after militants launched their assault. The town’s civil commissioner Mushtaq Jadoon said that 30 hardened militants jailed for their involvement in major attacks or suicide bombings were among those who escaped. Those released include two local Taliban commanders, Abdul Hakim and Haji Ilyas, reports BBC Urdu’s Ahmed Wali. The Taliban assault comes on the day parliament is electing a new president. We will never know if the timing was deliberate, but it has hugely embar-
rassed the government, and once again highlighted the ability of the militants to strike at will. Suggestions the authorities had advance warning of the attack, but did not act on it, only make matters worse. No very high-profile Taliban members were being held at the Dera prison, but at least 30 militants freed in the assault are described by the authorities as “hardened” Taliban fighters. The attack rekindles memories of a 2012 jailbreak in the nearby city of Bannu in which about 400 prisoners escaped, including Adnan Rashid, a radicalised former member of the military who recently wrote an open letter to child activist Malala Yousafzai, explaining why she was attacked by the Taliban. The Dera jail attack comes a month after the police said they had arrested a group of militants
who were planning to launch a similar attack on Karachi Central Jail. This is indicative of an emerging Taliban strategy to break jails instead of negotiating the release of their prisoners by taking hostages, which they have done in the past. Also released is a sectarian militant, Waleed Akbar, the principle suspect in last year’s attacks on Shia mourners in Dera Ismail Khan during the Shia mourning month of Moharram. Attackers used loudhailers to call the names of particular inmates, Mr Jadoon said. Fourteen fugitives were later re-arrested by police, he said. A curfew has now been imposed on Dera Ismail Khan as police hunt for the remaining escaped prisoners, but correspondents say this will be a difficult task as they flee into tribal areas.
A coach has plunged off a flyover in southern Italy leaving at least 38 people dead in the country’s worst road accident for decades. The coach hit several vehicles before smashing through a barrier and toppling down a steep slope near the town of Avellino, in the Campania region. At least 10 people were injured, some of them seriously. The coach was taking about 50 people, including children, back to Naples following a pilgrimage. The cause of the accident is not yet known. Some reports say the vehicle was travelling at speed. What really strikes you here at the scene of the crash is the great height that the bus fell. Standing where it came crashing down through the trees, you have to crane your neck to look up at edge of the road. It stands 30m above you against the blue of the sky. Most of the wreck of the bus was taken away soon after daybreak. But smaller parts of it are still lying around - including a few seats. And in among the debris there were some personal items: a pair of women’s silver flip flops, and what looked like a child’s toy. They are just the sort of things that you might expect families to have with them on an excursion like this - what was supposed to be a chance to get away to the countryside on a summer weekend. The head of the local fire brigade division, Alessio Barbarulo, said barriers on bridges would normally prevent such accidents but “evidently it seems the impact was so strong that even the barrier gave way”. A survivor said the driver, who was among the dead, appeared to have lost control of the bus, possibly after a tyre punctured. Transport Minister Maurizio Lupi said the vehicle had passed its annual inspection in March, and there was no indication of technical problems. Tests are being carried out on the driver’s body as part of the investigation into what caused the accident. TV footage showed smashed vehicles on the flyover and shrouded bodies lined up by the side of a road. The Naples-Bari motorway was closed to traffic because of the accident. The bus dropped 30m (98ft), coming to rest in heavy undergrowth after smashing through the guard-rail. The final number of victims remains unclear, with local officials saying 38 died while the transport ministry in Rome spoke of 39. The injured were taken to hospitals in Avellino, Salerno and Nola, Ansa news agency said.

JAKARTA - At least eight people are dead and five are missing after flooding and landslides hit eastern Indonesia, an official said on Tuesday. A search and rescue operation is under way, with police and military personnel scouring rubble for the missing, National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said. The tragedy came after heavy rain on Monday night caused the Moa-Moa river, which cuts through the city of Ambon on the Maluku chain of islands, to overflow. “Eight were killed and five are still missing. Another 10 were
injured,” Nugroho stated. The floods submerged some houses on the river’s banks and triggered landslides in several areas among Ambon’s hills. Nine houses were swept away or buried and another 30 damaged. Floods and landslides are common in Indonesia, which is prone to frequent bursts of heavy rain. Environmentalists blame logging and a failure to reforest denuded land for exacerbating flooding.

JAKARTA — The head of Indonesia’s largest Muslim organization called Monday for the disbanding of a hard-line Islamic group after a pregnant woman was killed in a car accident during illegal raids to curb prostitution during the holy month of Ramadan. The Islamic Defenders Front, known by its Indonesia acronym FPI, has a long record of vandalizing nightspots, hurling stones at Western embassies and attacking rival religious groups. “Their attitude does not reflect the teachings of Islam,” said Aqil Siradj, chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama, Indonesia’s largest Muslim organization. “We called on the government to disband the group that did this vandalizing.” He said he regretted that the government has remained silent as hard-line groups shuttered Christian churches, attacked their worshippers and torched Ahmadiyah and Shiites mosques, which they consider heretical. The latest incident occurred July 18 in Central Java’s Kendal town.

This came after a 0.5-percent drop in the first quarter and a decline of 0.8 percent in the final quarter of 2012, the National Statistics Institute said. On an annual basis the economy contracted by 1.7 percent following a 2.0 percent decline in the first three months of the year, the institute said in a preliminary report. “This result was basically caused by a more negative contribution in the domestic demand, which was compensated partially by a positive contribution of the external demand,” it said. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is relying on growing exports and an upsurge in tourism to end an economic slump that started in 2008 after the end of a decade-long property boom. Earlier this month the government reported that Spain’s trade deficit narrowed sharply to just 27.5 million euros ($36 million) in May largely due to booming exports. Rajoy’s conservative government has made reforms, such as changes to labour market rules, that have reduced labour costs and help make Spanish goods more competitive. The unemployment rate fell for the first time for two years in the second quarter, to 26.26 percent from a record 27.16 percent in the first quarter, the statistics office reported last week. Seasonal tourism accounted for most of the drop as the sector is expected to be strong this year as cash-strapped Europeans look for budget vacations while avoiding Egypt and other rival destinations in the Middle East and North Africa experience political turmoil. The statistics agency also reported provisional data showing that inflation slowed in July to 1.9 percent after rising for two months to 2.2 percent and 1.8 percent in May. While the government has hailed the improvements in economic indicators, it has offered little hope of a solid recovery, forecasting a contraction of 1.3 percent in 2013 and only a feeble 0.5 percent rebound in 2014. A property market crash in 2008 plunged Spain into a recession, destroyed millions of jobs and left banks awash in bad loans. The economy emerged gingerly from that downturn in 2010 before sliding back into recession in mid-2011. The institute will publish its final figures for the second quarter GDP on August 29.

Manufacturing slipped 3.3 percent from the month before in June and was 4.8 percent lower than a year before, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said. Such indicators suggest weaker growth in China may be sapping some of the momentum from the recovery. Meanwhile, household spending remained weak, despite a slight increase in incomes in June. However, other data showed the jobless rate edging down to 3.9 percent, its lowest level since October 2008, when the economy was slammed by the global financial crisis. The jobless rate had remained at 4.1 percent during the
previous few months. The most recent data have officials questioning whether the government should go ahead with a promised sales tax increase that economists say could derail progress in restoring growth and breaking free of deflation. The central bank governor, Haruhiko Kuroda, said Monday he believes the recovery is strong enough to weather a tax hike, which is needed to help redress ballooning deficits that have taken Japan’s national debt to record high levels. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has claimed progress with his “Abenomics” strategy of fighting deflation with aggressive monetary easing and higher government spending. While sales are up by double digits at Tokyo’s toniest department stores, overall retail sales fell in June from the month before, with surveys showing consumer spending is slowing, Marcel Thieliant, an economist for Capital Economics, said in a report Monday.
“In the future, we hope this election model can be developed for district head, mayor, and gubernatorial elections,” he said while attending the village head election at the village. Budiastra said the e-voting system has several advantages compared with the manual system. “Not only is the system cheap but also it meets the honest, fair, direct, general, free and secret principles,” he said. He did not deny that many people doubt about the system or worry about the results of elections which could be controlled so that the election winner could be arranged. “I should like to affirm that nobody can control the system developed by BPPT (the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology) to decide who will win elections,” he added. Meanwhile, Dr Marzan A. Iskandar, head of BPPT which developed the e-voting system said this system will enable the state to save funds by up to 50 percent. Earlier, chief of the agency’s E-voting system program Andrari Grahitandaru said whether or not this system can be applied nationwide depends on five factors, namely technology, cost, organizers, people and legality. “When it comes to technology, cost and people, I think there is no problem. It is up to the capability of election organizers in this case the KPU (elections commission) and the law,” he said. He believed that the people are ready to follow whatever election system so it just depends on the readiness of political parties which will contest in elections. “By applying the system, vote counts cannot be manipulated, because all data are recorded more accurately,” he said. Grahitandaru said if the e-voting system is to be implemented in 2019, the law and regulation related to it must be ready in 2015. Budiastra, Iskandar and Grahitandaru believed the e-voting can be one of the benefits of electronic ID (e-KTP) policy because these two policies are closely related.

SINGARAJA - The idea of constructing air transportation at the northern Bali was submitted for many years ago during the tenure of late Drs. Ketut Ginantra, former Head of the Local Government of Buleleng Regency. At that time, he argued that the gap of developments, mainly tourism industries, between north and south, were too wide. All activities were focused in the south, particularly in the capital of Bali namely Denpasar. The gap was exacerbated by the location of Ngurah Rai International Airport in the South of Bali. In line with his idea of developing West Bali as a new quality tourism resort resembling the Nusa Dua model, he offered concept of Batu Ampar Tourist Resort with its potential tourist attraction such as the marine park at Pulau Menjangan, West Bali National Park will unquestionably attracts tourist from all over the world. The problem was, he argued, the land access from Denpasar to North Bali was still very poor. It took more than two hours from Denpasar
to the North Bali. That is why, he argued further, a new breakthrough must be found, which is constructing an air strip where at least light aircrafts would able to land on the area. The idea then was realized by his successor, Drs. Ketut Wirata Sindhu, where an airstrip widely known as Let. Kol. Wisnu airstrip was established. In promoting the new airstrip, an event was initiated called Buleleng Fly In. Aviators from neighboring countries and beyond, such as New Zealand and Australia were invited to take part in this event. The goal was to introduce the new airstrip in particular and what North Bali has to offer in general. This event was said to be successful due to many aviators taking part. After the successful first event a second event was held with the same result. Unfortunately, the successor of Drs. Ketut Wirata Sindhu, Drs. Putu Bagiada, discontinued the event. The new idea is forming to build a second international airport in the North of Bali. The idea of building a new international airport in the north of Bali is enthusiastically welcome by the local government of north Bali and the people of Buleleng as well, despite no official decision by the Central Government of Indonesia for such a decision. Since the outset of the plan reported by mass media in Bali, the preliminary plan has drawn debate among the local authorities about the location of the new international airport. Geographically, the north Bali is the largest area in Bali, almost one third of the entire area of Bali. On the south side it is bordered by a chain of hills which divides Bali into two parts, north and south. Singaraja as the capital of the
regency is located approximately in the centre of the regency. On the west side there are two districts, named Seririt and Gerokgak. On the other side, on the east, are Sawan, Kubutambahan and Tejakula. In the Gerokgak Distric there is Let. Kol. Wisnu Airstrip. So some people suggest that the new airport must be built in the Kecamatan Gerokgak. They argue that there is an airstrip already there, availability of the land, and part of the land are owned by local goverment of Bali. The appropriation of the land for such mega project is considered a big problem that needs to be solved. On the other side, the people suggest that the new airport must be built in the Kecamatan Kubutambahan, they argue that the area is the safest for aviation compared with Kecamatan Gerokgak due its closeness to the hills which causes air turbulent. Billions of rupiahs for Badung govt employee uniforms Mangupura (Bali Post)—
It has become a public secret if the welfare of civil servants in Badung County is higher than the other regions in Bali. Aside from the income side, the employees are also given a va riety of facilities and appropriate equipment including uniforms. In the fiscal year 2013, the Badung County allocates the budget to purchase uniform for thousands of employees with a total value at IDR 4.8 billion. The Head of General Affairs of Badung Regional Secretariat, IB Oka Dirga, explained on Friday (Jul 29) the budget worth IDR 4.8 bil-
lion would be used to purchase daily uniforms or brown civil defense and sportswear. The budget also included the attributes and belts.
According to him, the budget was aimed at supporting the uniform impression and the appearance of the employees of Badung County. Moreover, the previous uniforms had been four years old. He said the IDR 3.7 billion fund of daily uniform was intended for 5,572 employees at the regional working unit (SKPD) and secretariat, except for teachers. Such amount of employees included those spreading in the offices of
the headmen and subdistricts. Each employee would get the uniform valued at IDR 545,000. Meanwhile, the budget worth IDR 1.1 billion was allocated for the procurement of sportswear. It would be earmarked for the purchase of 6,343 sets of uniform where they averagely cost IDR180,000 each. Oka Dirga dismissed if the budget of uniforms was too expensive. According to him, the budget allocation was not overpriced but having met

Another culprit under pursuit Marine Police Unit of Denpasar Metro Police led by AA Putu Wismara Putra could arrest two of three fisherman hunting green turtle, Friday (Jul 26). They respectively named Holik, 44, and Ridwan, 27, the residents living at Bugis Kampong, Serangan. Meanwhile, another culprit with the initials BG managed to escape and is now remaining a fugitive. Other than both suspects, police also seized the evidence in the form of a living green turtle, a dead turtle, 77 turtle eggs and diving gears. Now, both suspects and the evidence were secured in Denpasar Metro Police. “Both suspects are still undergoing intensive interrogation in the investigator’s room,” said Spokesperson of the Denpasar Metro Police, IB Sarjana, Monday (Jul 29). In the press conference, Sarjana said that his party was still pursuing another culprit. A number of personnel had been deployed to catch the culprit. The fugitive was expected to be immediately arrested, so that the case could quickly be resolved. “Let’s say prayer in order the fugitive under pursuit (with initials BG—Ed) can be immediately arrested,” he said before media crews in Denpasar Metro Police.

He further explained the arrest of both suspects of green turtle hunters was started with information about the smuggling around the Laguna Beach, Serangan. A number of personnel immediately performed an investigation and beach search. At 10:00 p.m., police found three fishermen (Holik, Ridwan and BG) berthing on the beach. When seeing the coming of police, the three culprits tried to flee. However, Holik and Ridwan were arrested without resistance. Meanwhile, another culprit with initials BG managed to escape. After the arrest of the suspects, police immediately searched the boat Akbar 06. They found two turtles (one live and one dead), 77 turtle eggs, 2 flashlights, 5 arrows, 3 pairs of diving flippers and 2 masks. “The dead turtle has been slaughtered by the suspects,” said Sarjana. Meanwhile, the living turtle had been entrusted to the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA). Progress was being made on cleaning the oil that washed into Prao Bay on the west coast of Samet Island on Sunday night, though not fast enough, and rough seas and strong winds spread thin films of dispersed oil to a rocky bay farther north, said Rayong Deputy Gov. The company said it detected a leak when crude oil from a tanker moored offshore was being transferred to the pipeline, 20 kilometers (11 miles) from a refinery in Map Ta Phut, one of the largest industrial estates in Southeast Asia. The leak has since been fixed. The slick floated in the sea for more than a day before it began washing ashore on Samet Island, a small resort island that each year draws some 1 million foreign and domestic tourists due to its white sand beaches and its proximity to Bangkok, 140 kilometers (90 miles) away. ROME - Silvio Berlusconi’s political fate is in the hands of Italy’s highest court, which was hearing arguments Tuesday in the former premier’s challenge to a fraud conviction. The tensely awaited decision, which could have an impact on Italy’s fragile, three-month-old coalition government, is expected Wednesday or possibly Thursday, Berlusconi’s defender Franco Coppi told reporters outside the courtroom. Berlusconi’s case is one of eight on the docket, and the last one to be heard. Berlusconi, 76, was convicted with three others in Milan last October of tax fraud in a complex TV rights transaction for his Mediaset network, and sentenced to four years in prison with a fiveyear ban on public office. A Milan appeals court upheld the lower court’s decision this spring. This is his final appeal. The three-time former premier has no official role in Italy’s uneasy coalition government, but remains influential and was key to the center-right’s close, secondplace finish in February elections. He won a seat in Italy’s Senate, which he would have to vacate if the lower courts’ verdicts are confirmed. Berlusconi has reportedly appealed to center-right lawmakers not to yank support from the cross-party government of Enrico Letta, which already is having trouble mustering support for a series of measures to help Italy out of recession. Letta said Monday while on an official visit to Athens that he is not worried about the decision’s impact on his government, and that the coalition is stronger than most believe.
Despite politicians’ attempts to spread calm, political analysts said the situation remains volatile. “The problems is that in the case of a conviction, the dynamic could overwhelm the wishes of individuals,” Stefano Folli, a political analyst for il Sole 24 Ore business daily, wrote Tuesday. “A convicted Berlusconi would become a martyr for his backers while at the same time being an unacceptable ally for a good part of the center-left.” The high court is limited in its scope to examining whether errors were made at the trial or earlier appeal. It does not hear new witnesses or receive new evidence. If the court upholds the conviction, Berlusconi will be immediately stripped of his Senate seat and barred from running for any election. It is unlikely he would serve jail time, as three years would be shaved off in a general amnesty aimed at emptying prisons and it is unusual to serve time for short sentences, especially given Berlusconi’s age. The court could throw out Berlusconi’s conviction, but such rulings are rare. Another possibility is that it could order a new appeals trial before a different judge. If that happened, the statute of limitations would likely kick in for at least some of the alleged offenses, resulting in a milder sentence if Berlusconi is convicted again, and maybe sparing him the ban on holding public office. In a separate criminal case yet to come to appeal, Berlusconi faces a possible lifetime ban on holding public office if a lowercourt conviction for paying for sex with a minor and using his office to cover it up is upheld. That verdict in June also dealt him a seven-year prison sentence.

TRAVERSE CITY, Michigan — Already ravaged by toxic algae, invasive mussels and industrial pollution, North America’s Great Lakes now confront another potential threat that few had even imagined until recently: untold millions of plastic litter bits, some visible only through a microscope. Scientists who have studied gigantic masses of floating plastic in the world’s oceans are now reporting similar discoveries in the lakes that make up nearly one-fifth of the world’s fresh water. They retrieved the particles from Lakes Superior, Huron and Erie last year. This summer, they’re widening the search to Lakes Michigan and Ontario, skimming the surface with finely meshed netting dragged behind sailing vessels. “If you’re out boating in the Great Lakes, you’re not going to see large islands of plastic,” said Sherri Mason, a chemist with State University of New York at Fredonia and one of the project leaders. “But all these bits of plastic are out there.” Experts say it’s unclear how long “microplastic” pollution has been in the lakes or how it is affecting the environment. CHICAGO — Many heart specialists aren’t comfortable with discussing sex with their patients. But new guidance says they should, early and often, to let survivors know intimacy is often possible after a heart attack. Discussions should involve everything from when and how to resume sex, to what position might be best for some conditions or not advised for others, according to a consensus statement released Monday by the American Heart Association and the European Society of Cardiology. It’s billed as the first scientific statement with detailed guidance on resuming sex after a heart attack, stroke or other cardiac condition and is based on a review of
medical literature. “Sexual health is an important part of the overall health of the individual,” even for the oldest patients, said Elaine Steinke, a researcher and professor of nursing at Wichita State University in Kansas. Steinke was the lead author of the statement published in the heart association’s Circulation journal and the European Heart Journal. Co-author Tiny Jaarsma, a professor and heart failure researcher at Sweden’s Linkoping University, said in an email that doctors and nurses “rarely discuss sex ‘spontaneously’, but often wait until the patient brings up questions around sex. Health care providers often are afraid to upset patients or might feel embarrassed themselves.” Fears and anxieties about
resuming sex are often numerous: Will it cause another heart attack? Can I use Viagra? What if my defibrillator goes off during sex? And many are too shy to ask, so heart doctors, nurses and other health care workers should take the lead and initiate the discussion with men and women patients of all ages and their partners, according to the statement. Many heart patients can safely resume sexual intercourse after first checking with their doctors, and the answers to many questions depend on each patient’s overall health, the guidance says. Patients with mild, stable chest pain face a low risk for a sextriggered heart problem, whereas patients with advanced heart failure should postpone sex until their condition is stabilized.

Dougall was one of four Britons and an Indian national suspected in a drug ring, but she was convicted only of failing to report her boyfriend, Julian Ponder, for drug possession. Sandiford, who helped police net the others, was sentenced to death for smuggling. Media reports have said Kerobokan, where several dozen foreigners are held, is notorious for drugs, corruption and abuse.

Bali government through the Transportation, Communications and Informatics Agency finally set the basic taxi fares. The Land Transportation Organization (Organda) Bali stated the rise in taxi fares averagely reached 26.67 percent. For instance, the tariff of taxi meter per kilometer was from IDR 4,500 to IDR 5,700, while the waiting fee from IDR 30,000 from IDR 40,000 per hour and door opening charge to IDR 5,000 from IDR 6,000. “The government has issued a Decree on the taxi fare increase. Averagely the increase reached 26.67 percent. The tariff has passed through calculation made together. The calculation was based on the rise in fuel price and the costs incurred. The taxi fare increase was also adjusted to the purchasing power and public interest,” said Chairman of the Organda Bali, Eddy Dharma Putra, in Denpasar, Monday (Jul 29). According to him, the increase in taxi fares was also adjusted to the purchasing power and public interest other than avoiding the flaming arising among the entrepreneurs of public transport. “We cannot raise fares recklessly because the policies made will affect the people’s purchasing power,” he said. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Bali Taxi Driver Union, Ketut Witra, said the taxi fare increase was effective on Monday (Jul 29)
at 11:00 a.m. Determination of the fares increase was eagerly awaited by taxi entrepreneurs because it would affect their income. “We are relieved because the decision waited for by taxi drivers and operators can be realized. Quite long time we have waited for the decision, so that we urge the government to immediately impose the new taxi fares,” he said. After determination of the new taxi fares, his party should make adjustment to the taxi meter. His party would directly coordinate with the operators and technician that would adjust the meter setup. “As an association, we request the meter setup can be completed in a day. A marine accident occurred in the water of Lima Beach at Pererenan, Mengwi, Badung, Monday (Jul 29). When undertaking a mulang pakelem or floating ritual, the boat carrying Mangku Ketut Swastikajaya flipped over in the middle of the sea. The victim who was also called Jero Mangku was drowned and found lifeless. Based on information, the victim and his entourage set out to sea to perform pakelem ritual on Lima Beach, Pererenan. The entourage was divided into two and equally used a boat. “So, they departed by two boats to sea,” a police source said, Monday. After the pakelem ritual completed in the middle of the sea, they planned to return to shore. Unfortunately, the boat boarded by the victim suddenly overturned. “The victim was in the same boat as I Made Dirgayusa and two fishermen also possessing the boat. Around 12:15 a.m., the boat boarded by the victim flipped over,” he said. Possibly, the boat overturned because of being hit by high waves. Boat passengers including the victim were trying to escape. Meanwhile, the entourage in another boat also tried to save the passengers. “Unfortunately, the victim could not be saved,” he said while asking his name to be made secret. Meanwhile, the victim Dirgayusa and two fishermen could be rescued. They were transported to another boat. Some time ago, a dog bit five residents at Kutuh Kelod hamlet, Petulu village, Gianyar. Aside from providing VAR for the victims, the sample of bite was also taken for examination. As a result, from the examination of sample was known if the dog biting the five residents of Gianyar was positive to rabies. Although finding positive result, according to the Head of Bali Health Agency, Ketut Suarjaya, the target of rabies-free Bali would not be delayed. “Although the dog is positive, as long as there has been no human death with positive rabies the target of rabies-free Bali has not been delayed,” said Suarjaya. So far, there had been no human death from rabies in Bali for 16 months. A region could be said to be free from rabies if there was no death case due to rabies in humans for two years. After knowing the dog biting the five residents of Gianyar was positive to rabies, Suarjaya said the measure needing to be taken was monitoring the victim so that they could get the anti-rabies vaccine (VAR) completely. “After being bitten, the five victims had obtained an action in the form of wound care and VAR administration. Now, they are continuously observed in order they can surely get a complete VAR so as to ensure that they are free from rabies virus,” said Suarjaya. He continued that to prevent the re-appearance of dog being positive to rabies the vaccination measures should be forwarded to the bitter end to ensure there would no longer rabies case in animals as well as in humans. Participation of the community to perform vaccination to their dogs regularly and properly was also needed to prevent the spread of rabies in dogs and humans. Suarjaya also hoped that people should not let their pet dog roam around but kept them well or put them into cage or tied. Communities should also make a proper treatment to the wound if they were bitten by a dog, namely treating the wound with clean water by using soap and running water, antiseptic and attempting to get anti-rabies vaccine. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

But the short YouTube film some bill as the first movie about the National Security Agency leaker is a source of pride for the friends who made it, even as they acknowledge its limitations. “Verax” gained much popularity at first, having been released just two days after Snowden left Hong Kong for Moscow, where he remains, but praise of the film has given way to criticism, with many viewers berating the four directors for amateur work and bad casting. The five-minute film is filled with Hong Kong scenery and melodramatic music and stars Andrew Cromeek, an American school teacher in Hong Kong with an uncanny resemblance to Snowden. Cromeek is unfazed by the critics, noting none of the actors is a professional and that they didn’t
think the mere YouTube video would gain so much attention in the first place. “I think the way it was shot was quite cool,” he said. “We are all amateur actors. We all had one take. It was kind of like, shoot, go, OK, done. So it’s fine. It’s completely OK if people are like, ‘It’s the worst acting in the world.’ It’s totally fine with me.” Jeff Floro said he and the other directors, Edwin Lee, Shawn Tse and Marcus Tsui, had only wanted to hone their guerrilla filmmaking style and produce something that was relevant to Hong Kong at that time.
