LONDON - Poland lived up to their billing as men’s Olympic volleyball title contenders with a thrilling opening win over triple world champions Italy on Sunday, backed by a deafening crowd of red and white clad fans at Earls Court. The Poles defeated Olympic champions the United States three weeks ago to take the World League title and the thirst for a first Olympic gold since 1976 resulted in an atmosphere louder and more intimidating than when hosts Britain made their bow at the Games earlier in the day. Agency and Culture Agency to revive the Balinese folklore as a mandatory reading material for students in elementary and junior high school. “Frankly, this makes me anxious. Today, the young people of Bali are no longer familiar with Ba-

linese folklores because publishers are rarely willing to publish them. Balinese children are more familiar with Doraemon, Sinchan, Spongebob and other imported products of stories,” said Made Taro. According to Made Taro, the popularity of Ni Tuwung Kuning and friends were obviously ‘gobbled up’ by the stories like Doraemon and other imported products that were not surely positive for the Balinese younger generation in terms of character formation. As a matter of fact, he said those Balinese folklores generally contained

very positive indigenous wisdom for the character formation of Balinese young people in the matter of attitudinal, ethical, mental and spiritual instillation. Meanwhile, the imported products of book stories were uncertainly in line with the Balinese culture. Even, some of them triggered children to become a selfish personal and hard character. “I keep longing for the revival of Balinese folklores. Before everything is gone, I hope the Bali Education Agency and Bali Culture Agency to re-discover the Balinese

folklores that have been nearly at the verge of extinction and further cooperate with the publishers in Bali to publish those Balinese folklores. To make Balinese children want to read those folklores, of course it would be much more effective if those folklores were made as compulsory reading in the local language subject. Without such an effort by the corresponding agencies in Bali, I am pessimistic if the Balinese folklores can be sustainable due to the onslaught of the increasingly unstoppable imported products,” he warned. Improvement of pedestrian zone on Jalan Sugianyar speeded up Amed fish auction base redundant, fishermen suffer

Amlapura (Bali Post)— The fate of fishermen has always been in difficult position. In the season around this month, aside from bad weather, their fish catch is not certain, either. Even, fishermen often suffer a loss as they do not get fish. However, the Hamlet Chief of Lean, Bunutan village, Karangasem, Komang Nitantara, said on Saturday (Jul 28) that fishermen should go to sea in order they could still support their family. However, when they got fish, added the legislator from Bunutan, Karangasem, Iluh Purnaminingsih, the price was still cheap. Allegedly, it happened because of the trick played by middlemen or collectors. Fishermen were dictated, where if they were not willing to sell the fish catch right away, it would quickly decay. Then, the price was determined by the buyer and it was frequently set at very low price. Fishermen were unable to process their catches like by temporarily storing or preservation so the price at harvest season would not drop. It was known that fishermen had no capability of doing so. On that account, said Purnaminingsih, the government needed to provide them with a coaching and mentoring such as by establishing a fisherman group. Through a group, fishermen could attempt or buy a freezer or cold storage to keep their fish catches so that they would not quickly decay. The problem was, said Purnaminingsih, the Amed fish auction base (TPI) constructed with a budget of about IDR 600 million in 2002 had never been utilized optimally. The TPI equipped with a cold storage was left dormant before being used optimally. The cold storage could not be operated because of high electricity cost reaching IDR 5 million per month and the fishermen could not afford it. In bad weather condition, said the Hamlet Chief of Lean, Bunutan village, Nyoman Nitantara, the fishermen had to struggle between life and death. A few days ago, one of them nearly drowned due to huge waves, strong winds and erratic ocean currents. The fisherman was I Ketut Gatra from Lean hamlet. He brought the boat of his friend, I Wayan Gara. Amidst the fierce Lombok Strait, the boat was hit by bad weather. In a fear condition, Gatra was rescued by a fisherman from Aas hamlet, Bunutan, while the boat was left in the sea. Finally, it was washed away and later found to run aground at Labuhan Manggis. “It is the fate of most fishermen in Karangasem when facing fish starvation, but when getting fish the price drops as dictated by collectors,” said Nitantara. Purnaminingsih, the only legislator in the Karangasem House from the People’s Conscience Party (Hanura) called for the executives in Karangasem to help fishermen. They need coaching and mentoring. To get benefits, they should be nurtured and encouraged to form a group. (013)

To anticipate the more serious damage, the Spatial Planning and Housing Agency (DTRP) of Denpasar finally repaired the damage of pedestrian zone located in front of the office of PT Garuda. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

An outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus that erupted in western Uganda at the start of July has killed 14 people, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Saturday. The latest outbreak was in the western Kibaale district, around 200 kilometres (125 miles) west of the Ugandan capital Kampala, and around 50 kilometres from the border with Democratic Republic of Congo, “We have confirmed 20 people who have contracted the virus of which 14 have died,” Joaquim Sewaka, WHO Uganda representative, told AFP. Sewaka said that teams from the Ugandan health ministry and the US government’s Centre for Disease Control (CDC) had been dispatched to the area. “The response is strong and we will try to set up quarantine points as soon as possible,” Sewaka said. The rare haemorrhagic disease, named after a small river in DR Congo, killed 37 people in western Uganda in 2007 and claimed the lives of at least 170 people in the north of the country in 2000.

Closely examining jaw, tooth and spinal fragments of Coniophis, biologists in the United States concluded it was the most primitive animal of its kind -- the missing link in snake evolution.

They found that Coniophis was “a transitional snake, combining a snake-like body and a lizardlike head” with burrowing habits -- suggesting it evolved from a land-dwelling lizard. The beast had an elongated body with hooked snake-like teeth, and most likely fed on medium-sized, soft-bodied prey. It did not have the flexible jaws that allow modern-day snakes to swallow prey many times their

own body size. “This thing quite probably would have had small legs,” Yale University co-author Nicholas Longrich told AFP, adding it would have looked more like a snake than a lizard. Published in Nature, the paper seeks to settle a longstanding scientific debate as to whether snakes evolved their elongated, slithering body as an adaptation for burrowing

Longrich said the first Coniophis remains were discovered in Montana in the 1890s and more fragments in the 1950s, but had mostly been left to gather dust in a museum since then.

NEW YORK — Samsung has extended its lead over Apple in smartphones, in part because its new Galaxy phones came out before Apple updated its iPhone, research group IDC said Friday. Samsung’s Galaxy S3 phones got good reviews when it was released late in the second quarter. In the U.S., the phones work with the faster fourth-generation, or 4G, cellular networks that major wireless companies have been building. The Galaxy’s screen is larger than the iPhone’s, while the Samsung phone is lighter and thinner.

An iPhone with 4G capabilities isn’t expected until this fall. The current model, the iPhone 4S, came out in October, and sales typically drop several months after each release. According to IDC, Samsung Electronics Co. shipped 50.2 million smartphones worldwide in the second quarter and had a market share of 33 percent, up from 17 percent a year ago. Apple Inc.’s fell slightly to 17 percent, from 19 percent a year ago. It sold 26 million iPhones in the AprilJune quarter. Besides having the Galaxy S3 out months before a new iPhone, Sam-

sung also benefited from its strategy of developing several devices for a range of consumers. By contrast, Apple targets only the high-end market with its iPhone. IDC’s report came out the same day Samsung reported another record-high quarterly profit, thanks to Galaxy sales. Robust sales of smartphones helped offset a slowdown in other consumer electronics businesses such as televisions and personal computers. IDC said the big question is how well Samsung’s phones will sell once the new iPhone comes out.

To prevent the restless of fishermen, the action of mangrove deforestation was then reported by Headman of Sumberkima, Putu Wibawa, to Commission B Chairman of the Buleleng House, Putu Mangku Budiasa. Putu Mangku Budiasa confirmed on Sunday (Jul 29) that he had received information from the Headman of Sumberkima about the deforestation of mangroves in the Sumberpao coastal area. The assets of land and building which have been established for decades were long dormant and rarely used. Now, its condition is getting shabbier because it is taken advantage for storing asphalt drums belonging to the implementer of road widening project. As information complied at location on Sunday (Jul 29), other than used to store the asphalt drums, it was also contracted for the abode of project employees. Local residents also utilized the vacant buildings for the abode, food stalls and laundry business. Two rooms were occupied by the employees of the road project. On the other hand, the Headman of Yehembang Kangin, Made Riana, told Bali Post last Sunday if the rest area would be utilized by a Foundation for the Disabled and it was welcomed positively by the regency. Meanwhile, the drums were only put there temporarily, including the employees occupying the rooms in the rest area located at Tegak Gede. Related to the rental fee, his party claimed to have not known but it possibly had something to do with the rules on regional migrants who lived there. “Next month, they may have gone, it’s only temporary. Nyoman Suratmika, explained that Tabanan still needs more 18 doctors to fulfill the needed 90 doctors total based on the population of Tabanan total especially those in the villages. “We need at least five doctors for now. Our general practitioner doctors are still in shortage,” Suratmika explained

Kalibukbuk, the centre of the Lovina Tourist Resort in North Bali is continuously developing from a small village into a small town. Squeezed between the capital of Singaraja Regency in the east, and the small town of Seririt in west, it is located on the main road that stretches along the north coast linking Singaraja to Gilimanuk on the western tip of Bali, the ferry port to Java. The development of tourism in Bali, initially in the south, gradually spread to the north when adventurous travelers, looking for something different, ventured beyond the chain of hills that divides Bali, north and south. In this chronicle of tourism development in North Bali, one prominent figure cannot be ignored, namely the late Anak Agung Panji Tisna, the last king of Buleleng. He was an intellectual who converted to Christianity, and a noted writer who wrote several novels, including “Sukreni Gadis Bali” which was later made into a film. He believed that in terms of tourism, Bali was unbalanced, too heavy in the south and too light on the north, an unbalanced boat that could capsize. With this vision, he built the first accommodation in the village of Kaliasem, west of Kalibukbuk in the 1970’s. Built on the beach with seafront views, it was bordered by a stream named “Tasik Madu” (Sea of Honey). He named it “Lovina”. It is not confirmed precisely how it got its name, but one story is that it derived from “Lavina”, the name of a small hotel in India, where he spent the night on his way from Europe to Indonesia. The idea of developing the area was followed by his sons, the late Anak Agung Ngurah Ganteng who built “Manggala Home Stay” and Anak Agung Ngurah Sentanu, with “Permata Hotel” both located in the village of Kaliasem. As it happens in business when somebody proves successful, many people jump on the bandwagon, Lovina was not an exception. Accommodation started to appear with names to lure the would be tourists including “Seaside Cottages” even though the accommodation was not on the beach or “bungalow”, despite the building not being bungalows. This idea of attracting tourists goes further by naming accommodation and tourist facilities “Lovina”, despite the fact that the location is far from the original. Gradually “Lovina”, as the area began to be known as, was frequently visiting by tourists and travelers alike. The name Lovina had unofficially been stretched to the villages of Kalibukbuk, Anturan, Tukadmungga, Pemaron and Temukus, nobody knew where Lovina began and where it ended. Due to the flourishing unplanned tourism development, the Local Government started to realise that Lovina needed regulating. The area was issued a Regional Regulation adopting Lovina as an official Tourist Designated Resort or “Kawasan Wisata”, one among several in Bali, and officially determining the borders covering five villages, namely Pemaron, Tukadmungga, Anturan, Kalibukbuk, Kaliasem, Temukus and Kayuputih. The resort was officially named “KawasanWisata Kalibukbuk” as the village of Kalibukbuk, roughly located in the centre, was the main area of development and “Lovina” was not an official name. The rapid tourism development of Kalibukbuk is not free of a negative side. Traffic jams, pollution, rubbish have increased, but Lovina is still peaceful and serene to visit. The calm sea, sunset and dolphins are the main tourist attractions. Those bold enough to venture out, can enjoy many tourist attractions beyond Lovina Resort such as hiking in the rice fields, the rustic environment and the simple atmosphere of villages. The main street of Kalibukbuk is now dotted with variety of restaurants, art shops and convenience stores. The small access path to Bina Ria Beach is jammed with bars, restaurants, souvenir shops and an imposing dolphin statue, the landmark of Lovina. Pasha Night Club is the only nightclub in town. Along the main road further to the east and west are several cafes, hang out places for those who enjoy the night until dawn. A family member called police Saturday night after finding the bodies of 41-year-old Daryl Benway and his daughter, Abigail, in the master bedroom of their twostory Oxford home, Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. said. Benway’s 9-year-old son, Owen, was found shot in the head in the kitchen and was taken to UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center in serious condition. Owen has been in pediatric intensive care, a spokesman for Early said Sunday. He said he had no additional information about Owen Benway’s condition, and a hospital spokeswoman would not comment. Benway’s wife, Kelleen, returned home after the shootings, unaware of what had happened, and found a swarm of police cruisers and

television crews, Early said. She was taken to the children’s hospital, where authorities told her the fates of her children and husband. Neighbors told the Telegram & Gazette that Daryl Benway’s brother Shawn lived on the first floor of the home with his wife and mother. Shawn Benway called 911 to report the shootings, Early said. INDONESIA Whale dies after returning to sea in Indonesia

JAKARTA — Indonesian rescuers say a sperm whale they helped return to sea has been found dead about 25 kilometers (15 miles) west of where it was beached for four days. The 12-meter (39-foot) whale washed ashore Wednesday near West Java’s Karawang beach, attracting hundreds of onlookers in fishing boats who blocked rescuers from leading it to deeper water.

Pramudya Harzani from the Jakarta Animal Aid Network said Monday that rescuers found its carcasses in Muara Gembong after dozens of navy divers and volunteers led the 2-ton whale to deep waters late Saturday. The whale, a protected species, was weak, but spouted water and swam away after being pulled into deeper depths with 10 vessels, including a tug boat. It was bruised and scratched, apparently from spectators climbing on it.

Casey Stoner goes soft for smart win After two difficult races, reigning MotoGP champion Casey Stoner clawed back some of the ground lost to title leader Jorge Lorenzo with a hard-earned victory in Sunday’s US Grand Prix. Raikkonen had run sixth at the end of the opening lap but was able to make up a position in the opening round of stops when he got ahead of Fernando Alonso and – like team-mate Grosjean – elected to go with a second set of the softer compound tyres. A strong second stint, where the Finn went longer than most of his rivals, allowed him to make up further places so that when he then pitted to swap to the medium compound rubber, he emerged from the pits almost level with team-mate Grosjean. London’s transport bosses expect an extra 3 million journeys per day during the Games on top of the usual 12 million, an Olympian test for an underground train network that first opened in 1863 during the reign of Queen Victoria. “I’ve noticed how easy it has been to travel. With the influx of one million people for the Games, it’s made me wonder, where are they?” Paul Richardson, a 37-year-old photographer, told Reuters at London Bridge, which the authorities had warned commuters to avoid. Saying their breezy, delay-free journeys seemed too good to be true, some travelers said they would reserve judgment on whether the transport system should get a medal until it coped with several days of Olympic rush hours, including the evening crunch. The capital’s higgledy-piggledy public transport system has been a target of scorn among Londoners and employers who complain that the jumble of grimy buses and delayed trains damages London’s reputation as one of the world’s premier cities. But in interviews with Reuters correspondents across London, commuters said the early morning rush hour had gone unusually well: empty trains and serene bus journeys replaced the usually cramped and sweaty crush that is the daily fare of London life. “The trains were all excellent today, we had no troubles,” Hugo Brown from Ely in Cambridge, who travelled to the Olympics to support Britain’s Paul Drinkhall in the table tennis competition, said. “It’s probably better than I expected. We had given ourselves extra time to get here and we’ve actually gotten here in less time than expected,” he added.

LONDON - Michael Phelps sailed through the heats of the men’s 200 meters butterfly on Monday to stay on course to cap his incredible Olympic career with more record milestones. Unflustered and swimming well within himself, the American coasted through his morning heat in one minute, 55.53 seconds, more than four seconds outside his own world record, but enough to qualify fifth overall. “I’m very happy with that swim,” Phelps said. Austria’s Dinko Jukic was the fastest overall, stopping the clock at 1:54.79, just ahead of Phelps’ compatriot Tyler Clary. “It felt fantastic. The time was faster than it was at (U.S.) trials,” Clary said. “Coming into the third wall I was amazed at how well I felt. Historically I go faster in the evenings, and I felt like there was more there.” The 200 butterfly is one of the most physically demanding events in swimming and Phelps is a master of managing himself through the heats and semi-finals without over exerting himself. Compared to Beijing where he won eight gold medals, Phelps has not had a great start to the London Games, finishing fourth in the 400 individual medley then second in the 4x100 freestyle relay. But his best events are yet to come and he is poised for a memorable night on Tuesday. If he wins the 200 butterfly final, his favorite race, he will become the first male swimmer to win gold in the same individual event at three successive Olympics. He will also equal Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina’s record tally of 18 Olympic medals. Phelps could then claim the outright record when he contests the 4x200 freestyle relay event, where the Americans are overwhelming favorites to win.
